Post by oObubblesOo »

Title: Reluctant Royal
Author: oObubblesOo
Rating: It’s starts out TEEN-ish and will progress from there
Category: M/L & M/M & moderate A/I
Disclaimer: Same old same old…I don’t own any of the Roswell characters…I’m just borrowing them for a lil while

Author’s note: After reading about a million different stories and posting tons of feedback…I’ve decided to give writing a whirl. This is my first attempt at posting a story…I hope you all like it as much as I enjoyed writing it. It’s a culmination of multiple story lines from different books that I have recently read…once again I hope you enjoy my lil story…BTW…I WOULD LOVE FEEDBACK!

Summary: Soon to be Queen of Pearl Ridge, Isabel radiates sunshine and laughter as her wedding to Lord Whitman draws nearer, however her younger sister, Princess Liz is not as excited as she. Her hand has been promised to someone she has never even met…she doesn’t doubt that he isn’t a kind man, but she refuses to have her life dictated for her. Why can’t she go find true, un-forced, utterly passionate and romantic love on her own terms and her own time? Or can she…

I absolutely love waking up to the sweet smell of tuberose, and today the air seemed to smell extraordinarily fragrant. I slowly sit up in my bed and stretch, my eyes and body still heavy with sleep. The birds in the trees sing sweet songs of love and life as I struggle to free myself from my warm blankets.

“Liii-iiizzzz…” the voice of my love calls out to me, ”are you up yet?”

“I’m up…I’m up.” I reply, still trying to untangle my heavy limbs from my persistent bed sheets.

“Liii-iiizzzz…where are you my love?” the voice calls out slightly fainter than before.

“I’m coming…wait just a moment dear heart.” With one last squirm and a defiant kick I finally free myself from my fluffy bed. I bound downstairs and look about only to see the room abandoned and the front door slightly ajar. I frown slightly and start to walk into the next room when a flutter of paper on the dining room table catches my eye.

“Catch me if you dare…”

In a single moment I toss the note heavenward and fly out the door.

I’m instantly awake as soon as my barefoot comes in contact with the fresh layer of dew that lies on the grass. My eyes scan the silent sleepy meadow and drift towards the forest.

A flash of royal blue darts from behind a rock and seeks shelter amongst the forest’s trees. I leap into action and take off after the taunting blue streak. My coffee tresses float in the air behind me as if possessed by a graceful eagle, dodging prickly branches and bushes thorns that reach out trying to ensnare me in their inanimate arms. The bottom of my once snow white night gown is slowly turning a dingy brown as I seek out the royal blue amongst the rich greens and browns of the forest.

Every now and again I’d catch a glimpse a bronzed bicep or a tuft of dark chocolate hair and yet…I never get to see all of him. I would see a flash of teeth and then…nothing.

I start to tire of the chase so I pause by a large boulder to catch my breath. I sweep my waist length tresses out of my face and fan myself with my free hand.

*SNAP*

My eyes pop open as I search the immediate area for the location from whence the sound came. My eyes land on a fairly large flowering bush and I smile. My keen eyes pick out a pair of amber eyes amongst the foliage. I clear my throat and hop off my perch. I slowly stroll towards the fragrant bush, humming a little song, pausing to smell a neighboring flower. I come to a halt in front of the bush and slowly extend my hand…

“Mmmph umph mmrrumph!!”

The abnormal sound coming from underneath yards and yards of fabric snaps me out of my daydream.

“How do you expect me to finish your gown for the gala tomorrow if you refuse to hold still!”

“Sorry Rosemary.” I half mumble as I reluctantly raise my aching arms into an outstretched V.

“Don’t mumble…you know how much I detest mumbling.”

I roll my eyes, How ridiculous… I think to myself I look like I’m waiting for some non-existent person to come and embrace me!

I squish my eyes shut and exhale deeply. My lead like arms slowly start to lower as I desperately try to remember what the man of my dreams looked like, but a sharp pinch on the back of my calf jolts me back into reality. I take a another deep breath and try to focus on holding my arms up in this zombie like manner.

«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»

A few moments later my sister waltzes into the room, she gives me a quick excited smile before spinning elegantly in front of the mirror. She is the absolute epitome of grace and dignity. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love my sister, but she has changed a LOT these past few months.

She has been engaged to Lord Whitman of the Eastern Falls since she was sixteen, but the seriousness of their relationship didn’t truly hit me until just recently. Sure…they’ve been courting for the last five years, but now since Isabel is of marriageable age she’ll soon be crowned Queen of Pearl Ridge and Alex will be her king. Which means she’ll be with him day and night, meaning…no more acting out plays in the library, no more sneaking freshly baked sweets during the cold winter months, no more plaiting each other’s hair and sharing secrets until the break of dawn. Our country may be gaining a new king and queen, but I feel like I’m losing one of my dearest friends.

I cast my fears and doubts aside as I feel Isabel grasp my hands in hers. Rosemary pushed the final pin in the hem of my dress before dismissing herself. Isabel waited until the last maid had left the room before turning her attention back to me.

“I can’t believe that I’ll soon be pledging my undying love to the man who holds my heart…”she sighs, ”Oh dear small one, isn’t life grand!” She drops my hands and prances daintily in front of the mirror humming an old childhood lullaby.

My sister was positively glowing in her dusty rose gown. She looked glorious with her long blonde hair cascading in gentle waves down her back. I glanced at her reflection in the mirror and then looked back at my own image in the mirror. I couldn’t help but notice how snugly Isabel’s dress clung to her voluptuous figure, I then looked down at my own petite figure and noticed how small my own breasts looked in my emerald green gown. The fact that the neckline of the gown plunged down to just above my navel made my lack of bountiful cleavage even more obvious.

I wish I were a little larger…maybe not a large as Isabel, but definitely a little larger. Oh my…did I actually compare my breasts to my sisters?!? How embarrassing!

“Oh Lizzie…what’s the matter? Dear small one you’re all flushed, do you need to sit down?”

Too embarrassed to admit what had actually made me blush, I simply nodded my head. We sat down together and she cradled my head in her lap and slowly smoothed my hair.

“Is it nerves Lizzie? I know tomorrow is a big day for you too…I can’t believe soon you’ll be engaged…where has the time gone?”

“Oh please!” I sit up abruptly and stare at my hands, “Don’t remind me.” I grumble as I kick my foot at a non-existent dust bunny.

“Oh honey…” Isabel whispers as she envelops me in an embrace, ”…you’ll be happy with Lord Valenti of the Stony Mountains. I’ve seen pictures of him and have heard nothing but good things about him. I know you’re a little apprehensive about your first meeting, but just look how well matched I was to Alex. They don’t just throw anybody together now-a-days. The royal court’s seers have spent countless months reviewing visions and observing the stars to make sure that this would be the perfect royal match for you.”

I can’t help but cross my eyes at my sister’s last remark. I’ve always hated being told what to do…especially when it came to my feelings. For instance, when the Duke and Duchess of the Everglade came to visit two summers ago, their carriage had accidentally run over my cat’s tail. My fearless feline Blynx tends to lie in the wildflowers that grow alongside our palace’s drive. The pressure from the carriage managed to separate a third of her tail from the rest of her body. I ran outside as soon as I heard her yowl. I scooped her up in my arms and ran up three flights of stairs before locking myself in my private bath. Several servants knocked on the door pleading that I come and accept the Duke and Duchess’ profuse apologies in person. I blatantly refused, although I knew that it had only been a tragic mistake, I was still infuriated at the fact that their carriage had maimed my beloved cat.

If it were Isabel’s pet that had been injured, she would have dutifully portrayed the “demure princess” role and would have gracefully accepted their apologies. Unlike me…I tended to my poor Blynx until I was sure that the Duke and Duchess had left Pearl Ridge.

And now…I’m being told not to worry about my impending engagement!! An engagement that will link me to a man who I’ve never met…for the rest of my LIFE!!!

I slowly cross the room and stand in front of the mirror.

“But Iz…not everyone can be as fortunate as you. You knew from the very beginning that Alex was the one for you…and I…I…” I absentmindedly fiddle with a loose string on my sleeve, “…I don’t have those fluttery first love feelings towards this Valenti character.”

Isabel glides across the floor and hugs me from behind.

“Dear Lizzie, my small one, I hope you open your heart to love.”

She tucks my hair behind one pointed ear, and as if by reflex I re-cover it. I have always been self-conscious about my elven ears, Isabel has never been ashamed of hers, but I always believed that my ears were my worst feature.

“But Iz…I don’t want to have to force love, I want it to happen naturally. I want to feel those fluttery butterfly feelings…to not have my life dictated to me…fate shall bring me my love.”

Isabel looked at me through the mirror and smiled.

“Dear small one, your love shall find you…as long as you’re willing to be found.”

I return her smile.

“My love will find me, but not a pre-determined love…but the love I was meant to have.”

“Where are the pink roses?!? We’re missing at LEAST 500 pink roses!!”

“More are arriving within the hour!”

“We need more lace upstairs!”

“Down stairs needs more too!!”

I swiftly move across the floor to shut my bedroom door in attempt to close out the disembodied voices that echo throughout the palace halls. I hold my breath as the door shuts with a soft click. I then carefully tiptoe towards my fluffy bed; the silence the closed door invokes is almost overwhelming. I turn my back towards my bed and listen.

* Ba-bum *

* Ba-bum *

* Ba-bum *

My heart seems thunderous against the deafening silence. And then…nothing. Absolutely nothing! A smile slowly spreads across my face as I throw my arms out and plop down on my bed.

For the first time in weeks, I’ve been able to enjoy the subtle stillness of silence. I leisurely exhale and nuzzle deeply into my soft silky blankets. At long last…I’m able to take a few moments to myself and unwind.

* Click *

My eyes snap open as the foreign sound reaches my ears. I manage to wriggle underneath an immense butter yellow pillow just as the side door is flung wide open. My precious silence is shattered by the sound of a multitude of female voices cackling like a flock of hens.

I groan softly to myself. Why hadn’t I thought to lock the side door!! I tilt my head slightly so I’m able to get a better look at my trespassers while still remaining hidden.

The women who had barged into my sanctuary consisted of several ladies in waiting, two hairdressers a seamstress and Rosemary.

“Did you see all those roses?!? There had to be at least three thousand!”

“I’d say that there were more than a hundred thousand rosebuds on the dining tables alone!”

“I heard that the guests were eating off of plates made of silver…and the royal family will eat off of plates of gold!”

“I heard ivory…”

“I heard mother of pearl…”

LADIES…ladies…enough chatter…we must not dawdle any longer. We must prepare her majesty for today’s events. Now you there…draw a bath…you and you…start warming a curling iron and pick some fresh flowers…you…”

“Begging your pardon ma’am.” A young maid timidly interrupted.

“Yes child…what is it?”

“Ummm…well…ummm…”

“Speak up child…what is it?” Rosemary replied impatiently.

“Well…ma’am…” she continued.

Rosemary irritably stamped her foot on the floor startling the poor girl but at the same time giving her the push she needed to finally spit out her question.

“Where is the princess?? Umm...ma’am?”

For a moment, Rosemary was dumbstruck and allowed her jaw to drop. Everyone and everything in the room seemed to freeze. It seemed as if they were trying to repair the silence that had been broken just moments before.

The stunned stillness was broken as quickly as it started. Rosemary snapped her mouth shut just long enough to regain her composure before belting out several commands.

“Check the gardens, the kitchens, the libraries! You there…check the closet and you…yes you!! Go check the stables!”

The room was instantly filled with the sound of the rustle of skirts and the pitter-patter of dainty feet that eagerly obeyed the commands that were given. I used the momentary sounds of commotion to wriggle deeper into the dark recesses of my blankets.

I waited until I heard the purposeful clunk, clunk, clunk of Rosemary’s shoes retreating down the hall before I even let myself think about moving. I waited another seemingly endless five minutes before slowly lifting the massive pillow off of my body. Glancing from my left and then to my right, I surveyed that the room was once again empty. Taking a deep breath I push a few pillows out of my way before hopping off the bed.

“GOTCHA!” a muffled voice calls out as a hand clamps around my ankle.

“Ooof!” is all I’m able to utter as I fall in slow motion onto the plush rug that surrounds my vast bed.

“Thought that you could slip away and ignore your royal duties did you my lady?!?”

“Ooooh! How did you know that I was under there?”

Rosemary scooted out from under the bed and secured her iron grip round my wrist.

“Because that’s your favorite hiding place!”

“No it isn’t! I don’t have a favorite hiding place!”

“No…I suppose you don’t…just like beds don’t grow long flowing hair.” She stated matter of factly.

Now it was my turn to be left with my jaw hanging…deceived by my own hair!! However, I regained my composure much quicker than she had.

Rosemary smiled and pushed me back onto the bed. She released her death grip just long enough to smooth out the wrinkles in her dress and tuck a rogue strand of hair behind a smooth, non-pointed ear. She then pulled a long pale pink silken cord that hangs from the bed’s canopy, a small delicate tinkle of bells was heard from some unseen place overhead. The invisible bells had just barely stopped chiming when a servant appeared in my doorway.

“Yes ma’am?”

“Please go and find her royal highness' ladies in waiting, hairdressers and seamstress and let them know that she doesn’t like to be kept waiting.”

“Yes ma’am.” He quickly bowed before scurrying down the hallway.

“Now my lady…” she continued, ”as long as there are no further interruptions…” she paused, gauging my body language for disagreement, I did my best to look indifferent and fiddled with a strand of my hair, “…then I would like to continue with today’s schedule.” She then removed a sheet of parchment from a pocket on her dress front.

“Okay, we’re already missed you morning meal with you parents due to your pranks, after we get you ready, we will have lost another two hours meaning we will have missed the commemoration ceremony of the planting of the 3,333 rose bush and the baptism of the Countess of Shady Glen’s fifth son…”

I can’t help but roll my eyes. The planting of the three thousandth three hundredth and thirty THIRD rose!! Who comes up with these silly ol’ rituals anyways!

“…so we’ll have to start your appointments at 9:30. At 9:30 you are to make an appearance in the Grand Hall to greet your guests. 9:45 you’re to make a public speech thanking the royal court’s seers for the superb match that they’ve made. At 10:00 you are to travel into Pearl City and at 10:15 you’ll cut the ribbon opening the Opalescent Library to the public. Then at 10:30 you’ll go to Pearl City’s place of worship and bless the babies that were born on the day of your engagement. At 11:00 you are to return to Pearl Ridge and you’ll have tea with your future in-laws, 11:30 you’re to rest…wait…you could actually go visit the Countess of Shady Glen. She is staying in the west wing for the next few weeks; we could have flowers sent to her room, 15…10 minutes before you arrive and…”

“Okay! Okay…” I managed to interject, “…do with me what you will but just do it already!”

Rosemary re-folded the piece of parchment and stuffed it back into her pocket.

“As you wish your majesty.” She regained her grip and pulled me into my now crowded bath.

«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»

“Owww…” I winced and gritted my teeth.

My hair had been twisted, tugged and pulled in every which way for the last thirty five minutes and thirty seven seconds….

Thirty eight…

Thirty nine…

Forty….

“There,” a blonde maiden chirped, “I hope you like it. I just have to put in a few decorations and then your hair will be done.”

I offer her a small smile as she turns and disappears behind a silk curtain.

* Groan * I slowly massage my temples, my skin feels sooo tight. It even kind of hurts to smile. I slowly stand and face the largest mirror in the room. For the second time that day, I was left with my jaw hanging.

Who is that girl in the mirror?!? Certainly no one I know.

My hair was elaborately braided and weaved and then piled up onto the crown of my head. The emerald green dress was intricately embroidered with gold thread and the dress seemed to slightly sparkle when I spun in a slow circle. The make-up that had been painted on my skin made my lips look about three times rosier than they actually were. My eyes were carefully lined with black kohl giving my golden-brown eyes a smoldering effect.

Still holding my reflections gaze, my hand slowly trailed up the side of my trim form and I carefully traced the side of my face. I was awestruck at the beauty that lay before me and yet…completely bewildered. The girl I gazed upon was indeed I, but…it wasn’t.

“Ahem…” a voice resounded throughout the momentarily empty room. I broke my gaze from the stranger in the mirror to see who had entered the room.

“Nanai Claidi!” I squeak out as I rush to hug the woman who I considered to be my second mother.

“Dear small one, look how grown up you look.” She says while enveloping me in a hug. “Ooof…not so tight my dear, you’ll squish the flowers that I brought for your hair.”

“Sorry Nanai. It’s just that you’ve been gone for so long. I’ve missed you, you’re…you’re more than a nanny to me, you’re just like a…”

“Don’t say it dear. Your mother may not have always been there for you when you were growing up…but she loves you just the same. Your mother and father love you and Isabel very much.”

“I know…I know…” I mumble, “…but if she loves me so much then why is she making me marry someone I’ve never met…someone I don’t love.”

“Don’t exaggerate dear,” she says while steering me towards the nearest stool, “you’ll only be getting engaged to someone you’ve never met.” Her eyes twinkled with laughter as she gazed at me through the reflection in the mirror.

“Oh Nanai, please don’t tease me…” My voice cracks as I struggle to remain calm.

“Oh…don’t cry small one…I only said that in jest. I didn’t mean to upset you.”

I sniffle and blink real fast in attempt to keep my tears from spilling over.

“Oh small one…” she pulls a handkerchief from her breast pocket and dabs lightly at my eyes so as to not smudge the kohl, “…I know this arranged marriage business has distressed you, but you haven’t even given love a chance to present itself to you.”

“What…do….you….mean??” I manage to choke out between hiccoughs.

Don’t you hate it when you slightly hyperventilate after crying!?! Even if you’re not still upset, your voice still falters as if you were.

“What I mean sweet pea, is that you haven’t even met the young man you’re supposed to marry, granted…that is part of the reason you’re so upset…”

I start to interrupt but she holds up her hand to silence me.

“…but , by disregarding a potential love, you are not only hurting yourself, but you might also be turning your nose up at your soul mate.”

I heave a heavy sigh, the kind that comes from deep down in the pit of your stomach and knocks around all your insides before it even hits your lips.

“Well…what should I do then?”

“Well small one…I’m not saying that this is the perfect match for you…but I’m not saying that it isn’t either.”

She must have seen the confusion that clouded my face because she continued.

“What I am saying is that, you shouldn’t go to this ceremony with a closed mind and an angry heart. You should go as open minded and light hearted as you would go and greet a near and dear friend. By shutting your heart, you also shut out love.”

“But why must I be told who to love? Why can’t I decide who I can and can not love?”

“No one can tell you who to love my sweet.” She says while cupping my chin in her hands. “Not even you can tell your heart who to love, that choice is made from within. Your heart and soul choose who they want. That my dear…is one of life’s great and wonderful mysteries.”

I look deeply into my Nanai’s brilliant emerald green eyes as I absorb the knowledge that she presented me with.

“No one can tell me who to love?” I whisper.

“No my sweet.” She replies chuckling softly. “Not even the all powerful King and Queen of Pearl Ridge.” She kissed me gently on my cheek before reaching towards the basket full of tuberose and pearls.

“Now…enough tears and worrying…we have a gala to prepare for.”

She punctuated her final statement by pinning a small bloom in my ornate hair. I take a deep breath before asking the question I should have asked her when she first came in.

“Soooo…how is your cousin? Better I should hope.”

My Nanai smiles and then recounts the tale of her journey.

Reluctant Royal Part III

Post by oObubblesOo »

Wow...I can hardly imagine that I've already posted three ((counting this one)) parts in a week. I haven't been able to get this story out of my head so I post when I'm inspired...and if you hadn't guessed...I'm inspired most when you all leave feedback

To answer some comments

Yes I'm writing in the first person...for the most part, this fic is going to be written in Liz's POV but there will be times when I switch it around and get other people POV...hopefully that won't confuse you...let me know if it does :)

Well...here's the next part..ENJOY!

«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»

“Tulips”

“What about roses?”

“No…there are too many roses as is.”

”Daffodils?”

“Orchids? What about orchids?”

Rosemary and a handful of maidens were trying to make the “difficult” decision of what kind of bouquet I should carry during the ceremony. Each of the maids held up a bouquet for me to hold and then Rosemary would fling it down on the floor with disgust.

“The daffodils make her complexion look sickly and the orchids aren’t fragrant enough!”

Rosemary screeched tossing the decorative nosegays onto the marble floors.

“Ummm…how about sunflowers?”

Rosemary shot an icy glare towards the maid before stomping on a daffodil. She stared at the ceiling and muttered to herself. I couldn’t really tell what she was saying, but I think I heard something about having to work with imbeciles…

I hate it when they act like I’m not here! If I’m so damned important then why do they treat me like an infant! I can’t even pick out my own flowers!

I glanced back at Rosemary; she looked as if she were on the verge of a mental breakdown.

Or can I…

While Rosemary was busy rubbing her aching head, I discreetly signaled for the maid with the lilac gown to draw nearer. The shocked maid looked to her left, and then to her right. She then pointed to herself and mouthed the word, “ME?”

I nodded my head slightly so as to not shake any pearls loose from my hair. Still looking confused, the young girl skirted along the outside of the circle of women and trampled flowers until she was by my side. I then took the flowers from her hands and smiled a silent thank you.

“Oh Rosemary!!” I exclaimed, “These are sooo beautiful! No, they’re more than beautiful, they’re…they’re…exquisite!”

“What…what!?!” Rosemary started; my sudden outburst had snapped her out of her frazzled meditation. She blinked a few times before her eyes focused on my face.

“Weren’t you the one who said that these long stemmed calla lilies would look perfect with my dress?”

I turn to the maid who gave me the flowers.

“She did say that…didn’t she?”

The maid blushed profusely and briefly sputtered incoherently. I nudged her with my elbow in order to gain a response.

“Ummm…yes…I believe so…”

The young girl was obviously terrified of Rosemary’s response to her fib. Her complexion went from a rosy shade to the color of fresh milk and her eyes fluttered every now and again…as if she were to faint.

I obviously wasn’t going to get any more help from her so I turned my attention back to the rest of the group.

“What did she call them? It wasn’t beautiful it was…”

The room was deathly silent. My charade had failed. No one knew what to think, I was just about to give up hope when a girl in teal answered my question.

“Ummm…lovely…” a maid proffered hesitantly.

I smiled…

…I just might be able to pull this off…

After seeing that the maid in teal had not been struck dead by a lightning bolt, they relaxed a bit and seemed to embrace my game.

“No she said that they were gorgeous.”

“No…magnificent!”

“Stunning!”

“Perfect!”

“That’s it…she said that they were absolute perfection!”

Rosemary looked from maid to maid, unsure what to think, the confusion written across her face was evident. However, she didn’t stay that way for long, she nosily cleared her throat. The room was once again unearthly silent. We all held our breath as we waited for Rosemary to break the stillness of the room.

“Of course I said that! Don’t you listen at all! Sometimes I feel as if I’m trying to talk to a bunch of animals. Really!”

The entire room seemed to silently breathe out at the same time. The maids looked relieved but the maid in the lilac gown still looked as if she were going to pass out. The moment of ease lasted briefly before Rosemary started yelling again.

“Come come now…we can’t let her royal highness be late for her own engagement ceremony. Let’s get a move on people!”

The maids bustled about, picking up the crushed flowers and refreshed my lip color before hurrying out the door.

Liz = 1; Rosemary = 0

*Click, click, click*

Each time my foot touches the white marble floor, the sound reverberates off of the vast walls making it sound as if some giant creature prowled the palace halls instead of little ol’ me.

My GOD! Does this hallway ever end! It feels as if the more steps I take towards the opposite end, the longer the corridor seems to stretch.

After about a BILLION paces I finally stand before a pair of colossal doors. The hallway was dimly lit with tall candles that were spaced far apart. It wasn’t the darkness that scared me, well…maybe a little, but it was what lay behind those doors. My destiny…my family…

My love?

«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»

“Bum ba ba BUM!”

Trumpets and drums sounded throughout the ballroom, causing the conversations to stop and people to halt their mingling. A short fat man in scarlet red robes stood proudly at the top of a large flight of stairs.

“Ahem…Ladies and Gentlemen, on behalf of the King and Queen of Pearl Ridge, I, Sir Waverly would like to welcome you all to today’s celebrations!”

The room erupted in applause and whistles as the Sir Waverly bowed and waved. Once the clapping had subsided, he continued with his oration.

“We gather here today to rejoice with the royal family. Today is the happiest of days, we not only celebrate the engagement of our youngest princess to Lord Valenti of the Stony Mountains…but we also delight in the marriage of our future Queen to her new husband Lord Whitman of the Eastern Falls!”

The room once again fills with sounds of applause and cheering. Sir Waverly waves his hands and lifts his goblet high into the air in order to gain control over the boisterous crowd.

“So with out further ado I would like to present, her majesty, Princess Lizbeth Allegra Delicia Aurelia Dove Emilia Sabine Iris Pearl Ruby Albinia Maryrose, and the future King and Queen of Pearl Ridge, Isabel and Alex.”

«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»

Even though the doors muffled most of the commotion on the other side, I distinctly heard my name being said.

Why did they have to say my whole name? They know how much I hate my endlessly long given name! It’s such a mouth full! Why couldn’t he have just called me “Princess Lizbeth…they only used Isabel’s first name.

While I pondered how I could strangle fat ol Waverly, the doors slowly opened. The light from the room dazzled me for a moment and I couldn’t move. I blinked several times, trying to get the stars from my eyes to disappear before slowly striding onto the landing.

I entered from Waverly’s left and Isabel and Alex entered from his right side. Isabel and Alex looked completely and utterly content. They didn’t even look my way; they were too busy gazing into each other’s eyes that they almost bumped right into fat ol’ Waverly, causing him to spill a little of his drink onto the floor.

When Waverly was sure that both the lovebirds and I had made it to his side, he once again raised his goblet in the air to regain control over the floor.

“Now that I have your attention, I would like to introduce one other person to you all. Lord Valenti of the Stony Mountains.”

The room was once again filled with cheers as a door on the ground floor opened. A tall muscular man with auburn hair strode out across the floor. He marched purposefully up the stairs and stood before me.

Well…he is handsome…but is he really for me??

I’m not sure if he was thinking the same thing, but he was definitely giving me a once over. It made me feel uneasy having his eyes slowly traverse down by body. I suppressed a nervous shudder as he dropped down to one knee.

“My Lady Lizbeth Allegra Delicia Aurelia Dove Emilia Sabine Iris Pearl Ruby Albinia Maryrose, will you do me the honor of marrying me.”

A hush fell over the crowd as they waited for my response.

No!

My mind swirled with confusion; I know Nanai told me to go into this with an open heart, but what if my heart refuses to open? Does that mean that he’s not the one? Do I…will I ever love this man? Whatever my feelings were towards this man didn’t matter. I had been betrothed to him, I was his whether I liked it or not.

“Yes…” I whisper.

The spectators cheer and whistle as Lord Valenti takes a small intricately carved box out of his pocket. From the box, he takes out a golden band with a large pearl and slips onto the ring finger of my left hand.

Waverly raised his glass for the third time that night as the din lulled.

“I would like to say a toast…”

The lights seem to make the room glitter as a myriad of glasses raised into the air.

“…first, I would like to thank our benevolent King and Queen, for inviting us to this auspicious event…”

A murmur of agreement rolled through the crowd.

“…I would also like to congratulate both of the princesses and their beloveds on their happy day…”

Another murmur of agreement and a few whistles sounded throughout the room.

“…and lastly, I would like to thank my lucky stars for being able to have been invited to the party of a life time.”

The room gushed with laughter and the clinking of glasses.

“Oh…before I forget…” Waverly continued, “I would like the dance floor to be cleared as the princesses and their companions dance the first dance of the night.”

Out of the corner of my eye I could see Isabel kiss Alex quickly on the cheek. The spontaneous public display of affection caused Alex to flush crimson red as he took one of her gloved hands in his. The two of them slowly glided down the stairs towards the dance floor, staring into each other’s eyes the entire way.

“Princess?”

The sound of Lord Valenti’s voice halted my jealous gaze and I turned to focus on him. Even though I wasn’t sure that this man was destined to be the love of my life, I was determined to give him a fair opportunity to win me over.

“Lord Valenti…” I extended my arm and he gently entwined it with his own.

“Please, if we’re to be married, call me Kyle…”

“Okay…Kyle…then…you may call me Lizbeth.”

“As you wish…Lizbeth…”

We slowly strolled down the stairs and made our way to the dance floor. Isabel and Alex were already swaying to the soft strains of a popular love song. Kyle took one of my hands in his and slipped his arm round my waist.

Kyle never focused on me for more then a few seconds. His eyes darted here and there…he would look into my eyes…and then he would focus his attention elsewhere. He was a fabulous dancer, but he seemed pre-occupied. At times it looked like he was thinking about saying something, but then he would change his mind and purse his lips shut.

What is wrong with this guy? This is probably the only moment that we’ll have alone together all night and he’s so distracted that he can’t even put two words together! This man is definitely not the one for me. He just can’t be!

Kyle was finally about to say something to me when the song ended.

“Ummmm…I…” Was all I heard before the room filled with applause. The dance floor was quickly flooded with well-wishers and party goers, each of them wanting to congratulate us in person. The throngs of people had caused me to separate from Kyle, although…that didn’t really seem to bother him too much, and since I’m a little vertically challenged, it didn’t take to long for me to lose complete sight of him.

Oh well…might as well mingle.

I wandered around the ballroom, shaking hands and kissing cheeks and then finally made my way to the head table. I was just about to sit down when dear old Aunt Lorana and her obnoxious daughter Xophia approached me.

“ooOooh my! I thought we would never get you alone! I just have get a closer look at that ring!”

“Oh…sure Aunt Lorana.”

Lorana grabbed my hand with pudgy fingers.

“Well isn’t that just darling Xophie dear. Especially with the two tiny diamonds right next to the pearl.”

“Yes mother…it’s sooo…quaint.”

Both Lorana and Xophia looked like giant animate flowers, for both of their dresses were fashioned as such. Lorana’s dress looked like a giant iris. Large pieces of fabric were assembled to look like petals, and the petals sprang forth from her waist and up around the bodice of the dress so it look like she were the center of the bloom. Xophia’s dress was made to look like a burgundy rose. Except, the petals of the rose were fashioned from a large amount of fabric that lay on top of one shoulder and dipped down to the opposing hip, creating the illusion that she was the center of the bloom.

“Thank you.” I reply smiling through clenched teeth.

Who do they think they are! Just because it’s not as gaudy as their jewelry, doesn’t mean that it isn’t pretty! COWS!

“Oh Xophie…it isn’t that bad…after all…size doesn’t really matter.” Lorana cooed.

The animosity that I felt towards this awful woman and her wretched daughter boiled my blood and stained my cheek crimson. I wanted to tell her off right then and there, but I knew if I did, I’d only cause a scene. So I decided to take the high road. I swallowed my pride and bitter retorts before proffering yet another sweet smile.

“Speaking of size…”Xophia piped in, “…really honey, that dress. It doesn’t suit you at all.”

Xophia leaned in real close before continuing in a stage whisper.

“You need a little more north of the equator if you want to wear a dress like that, if you know what I mean.”

She emphasized her catty remark by poking me hard on the exposed flesh between my breasts.

Why I oughta…

I was just about to smack Xophia’s smirk right off of her smug face when my Nanai Claidi swooped in.

“There you are Princess.” She quickly grasped my hands in hers to keep me from lashing out at Xophia. “I’ve been looking all over for you. Do you have a moment?”

“Oh…we were on our way to congratulate Lord Valenti anyways, weren’t we Xophie darling?”

“Yes mother.”

In unison, the two she-devils snapped open a fan and fluttered it in front of their faces. Lorana and Xophia dipped into quick curtsies before disappearing into the throngs of partygoers.

As soon as they were both out of earshot I turned to my Nanai and hugged her.

“Oh thank you Nanai Claidi! If you hadn’t shown up when you did, I think I would have knocked the living daylights outta Xophia!”

“Dear small one, you mustn’t let them get to you…”

“Yes…but didn’t you hear what Xophia said!?!”

“Yes dear, I did…so did about half of the people in this room. I’ll admit that what that girl said was spiteful, but she was probably just jealous of all the attention you’re getting tonight.”

Half the room?!?! Great! By the end of the night, all of Pearl City will know what Xophia said to me! Could this night get any worse?!?

“Dear small one, don’t fret. You’re perfect the way you are. I wouldn’t change a single thing about you.”

The room seems to wobble as tears blur my vision.

“Thank you Nanai…your opinion means the world to me.”

“Well small one, you mean the world to me.”

Why couldn’t she have been my mother. She never would have forced me into an arranged marriage. Plus, I would have normal ears!

She hugs me and then whips out her handy dandy handkerchief and wipes away the kohl smudges from underneath my eyes.

“Oh…before I forget. I have something for you.”

“Something for me?”

“Yes…I’ve been wanting to give you this gift for a loooong time, but I was waiting for the right moment to do it.”

“Well…what is it already?”

Nanai Claidi chuckled softly.

“Patience is a virtue small one, the gifts I have for you are up in my room.”

“Up in your…wait…did you say gifts? As in plural? As in…more than one?”

“Yes, I said gifts, and you’ll get them after the celebration.”

”Why not now?” I ask poking her gently in her ribs.

“Later small one, I’ll come to your room after the party…gifts in hand. Now please, try to enjoy your party.”

“But it’s so hard! Isabel is too busy mooning over Alex, Lord Valenti …my fiancée won’t talk to me and I don’t know half of the people in this room! Please…please stay with me. Pretty please?”

“I would small one, but I really should get back to the nursery. The parents in this room would have a fit if they’d known that I had left them unattended.”

“Oh alright…well…I’ll still see you later tonight…won’t I?”

”Yes small one…I’ll see you later tonight.”

She kissed the center of my palm and closed my fingers around it.

“Hold onto my love small one.”

“I will.”

With that, Nanai Claidi dissolved back into the crowd and I was once again left alone.

Part IV

Post by oObubblesOo »

Hello all…
It has taken me a lil longer to post this part than I expected. The only bad thing about having a lot of ideas is trying to find out a good way to place them in the story. I went through about 3 or 4 different re-writes…and this is what I came up with. I’m not completely happy with it…but oh well.

The songs that I used in this part don’t belong to me. One of the songs is called "Cocoanut Grove" by Harry Owens…I just switched some words around to make the song fit the story a lil better. The other is called "When I Think Of You" by Na Leo Pilimehana. Both are beautiful songs. I hope they don’t mind me borrowing them.

Enjoy

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

For the remainder of the evening, I sat in my chair at the head table. Never in my life had I felt as secluded and alone as I did that night. Sure…I was surrounded by people, but I still felt alone. Isabel and Alex were always either on the dance floor or whispering sweet nothings into each other’s ears. They were obviously drunk on bliss and most likely looking forward to spending their first night together as husband and wife.

Kyle, on the other hand, looked like he was drunk on wine. For the last couple of hours he sat amongst a group of men who appeared to be his close friends from the Stony Mountains. There wasn’t a dry cup among them. Towards the end of the night most of the men stumbled their way to their carriages or passed out in their chairs. My esteemed fiancée was one of the men who currently dozed in a puddle of his own drool.

My parents had decided to retire early leaving me to play the role of the “gracious hostess.” After countless hugs, kisses, and ‘thank you for coming’s I was finally able to retreat to my room.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

Somewhere between the 82nd and 113th step, I decided that I absolutely had to remove the five inch heels from my blistered feet. So I sat down on the landing between the 2nd and 3rd flight of stairs and carefully pulled the slippers off of my slightly swollen pink feet and reveled in delight at the coolness of the marble.

“Ahhhh…” I sighed in content.

I slowly roll my ankles and trace small circles on the floor with the soles of my feet.

* BONG *

A clock sounds the hour from somewhere in the darkness.

Nanai Claidi! She was supposed to come to my room tonight. I hope I haven’t kept her waiting.

I slowly stand and continue my hike up the final flight of stairs.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

After my arduous journey up the final flight of stairs and traversing an immense hallway, I finally pad into my room at 1:23 in the morning.

A few scattered candles dimly lighted my room. The room was still. No Nanai.

“oOoh…” I whine, “I missed her.”

I walk over to my bed and flop down upon a cluster of pillows.

OW!

I had forgotten to drop my shoes on the floor when I walked in the room. I carefully removed the shoes from my soft belly and pitched them over the edge of the bed.

“Missed who?” a voice calls out from my bathroom.

I peer over my pillows and blankets and focus on the black doorway that leads to my bathroom.

“Nanai?”

My Nanai’s form appears in the doorway as she walks towards me.

“Yes dear?”

“You startled me. I thought that you had already gone to bed.”

“I’m sorry dear heart, I didn’t mean to frighten you. I was feeding Blynx when you walked in.”

“I wasn’t frightened, just surprised that you were still up.”

”Of course I’m still up, I said I’d be here when you got back, didn’t I?”

”Well yes, but…oh never mind, I’m just glad that you’re here.”

I clamber off the bed and give her a big hug.

“Soooo…now that I know you’re here…where are they?”

“Where are what?”

“Don’t tease me, the gifts Nanai, the gifts. The two things that have kept me going this whole night is knowing that you were coming to see me tonight and that you had gifts to give me.”

I plop back down on the bed again and tuck my feet underneath me.

“Why don’t you tell me about how the party went first.”

“It was terrible! Now can we get to the presents?”

My Nanai chuckled softly and placed a few candles on my bedside table before sitting down next to me.

“How about you tell me how the party went while we get you ready for bed, and then you can open the gifts.”

Knowing that she wouldn’t take ‘No’ for an answer I place my hand in hers and she leads me into the bathroom.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

After a lot of scrubbing, Nanai Claidi led me out of the bathroom fresh faced and warmly dressed in a long white night gown. With one hand she held my hand in hers and in the other she held a fistful of my wet dripping hair away from my back.

She led me to my bed, let go of my hair and sat down on the bed.

“Presents?” I asked hopefully.

She smiled and patted her knee.

I return her smile and join her on the bed. I sprawled out and rested my head on her lap.

I really love it when she brushes my hair. Some people enjoy having their feet rubbed or their back scratched, but I absolutely love when people play with my hair. Call me strange if you want, but its just sooo soothing.

“Now that you’ve told me all about the party, what are your thoughts on Lord Valenti?”

* Groan *

“Oh Nanai, please don’t spoil the evening even more by mentioning his name.”

“Dear small one, is he really that bad?”

I roll onto my back so I’m able to look her in the face while talking to her.

“Yes Nanai…oh…just thinking about that stupid man gets me all worked up. Did I tell you that he didn’t speak to me at ALL after we left the stairs.”

“Not once?”

“Not unless you count ‘Ummmm…I…’”

“Maybe he was nervous…”

“Maybe he’s not for me.”

“Are you sure?”

”Yes.” I replied with utmost certainty.

My last comment took my Nanai by surprise. I could feel her muscles tense up briefly, but they relaxed and she cradled my head with one of her arms. She then leaned in close and stared deeply into my eyes. The green in her eyes seemed to swirl around like and emerald whirlpool, we stayed that way for a moment, silently staring until she pulled away and blinked several times before proceeding.

“Hmmmm…I thought so.”

We sat with one another in comfortable silence. My Nanai softly sang a song she use to sing to me when I was small while combing my hair with her fingertips.

I know of a place poets write about
An island of dreams they delight about
Where the birds on high sing a song to us

And the earth and sky belong to us
There's a grove of trees
Growing by the sea
Beckoning to you and me

There's a misty meadow where life is entrancing
And there sweetheart we'll find romancing
And love for two
By the light of a bright island moon

There's a misty meadow
Where your happy lover
Will do his part and soon discover a rendezvous
In the shelter of a sleepy lagoon

There's a misty meadow
Where I'll be confessing
The simple truth that you've been guessing
Sweetheart, I love but you

The humming and combing was all too much for me and I began to drift off.

“Lizzie dear?”

“Hmmm…” I replied, keeping my eyes closed.

“Aren’t you going to say thank you?”

”Thank you for what?”

”For your gift small one, really. Aren’t you paying attention?”

”Gift?!?”

I sit up and scan the room.

“What gift?”

Laughter shines in my Nanai’s eyes as she holds up a small gilded mirror.

When did she…how does she do that!?!

“Oh Nanai…”

She slips her hands behind my neck and unfastens the clasp so she could give me a better look at the necklace.

She laid the delicate chain on my open palms. It was so beautiful. I carefully grasped the necklace with my thumb and forefinger by the clasp. The golden chain seemed to shimmer and dance before me. As I slid the golden links between my fingers, I noticed the pendent swinging gracefully to and fro. The pendent itself was in the shape of a flower that had five petals and on either side of the bloom a leaf stretched it’s dainty golden arms. Underneath the flower lay a round gem, it almost looked like a pearl, but…didn’t.

The stone was a milky white color and round in shape, however, it was what was within the stone that intrigued me. The light from a rainbow seemed to sparkle from inside. Blues, pinks and greens seemed to disappear and reappear within the gems milky depths like fireflies twinkling in the night sky.

“Oh Nanai…it’s simply breathtaking, but…”

I was almost unsure whether to ask the question regarding the stone. I didn’t want to belittle her gift by asking what it was.

“Well…umm…what is it?”

“Don’t fret my dear. I’m not surprised that you don’t know what it is. Not many do.”

I proffered a small smile of relief before she continued.

“It’s an opal my sweet, it is said to bring good fortune and protect the wearer of the stone.”

“Really?” I inquired as I gazed at the marvelous stone.

“Yes my dear.”

She then took the necklace and fastened it back around my neck. I stood up and faced the nearest mirror; I loved the way it shone.

“Thank you Nanai,” I say as I crush her with a heart felt embrace, “it’s absolutely stunning.”

I can feel her chuckle as she clutches me to her breast.

“You’re quite welcome small one.”

She rubbed my back as I brought the pendent up to my face to admire the stone some more.

“Since you like your necklace so much, does that mean that you don’t want your other gifts?”

I let the charm fall back onto my chest.

“You mean there’s more?”

”Yes my dear. Don’t you remember? Gifts?”

Despite the fatigue that weighs heavily on my bones, I feel my body tremble with excitement.

“Yes…of course I remember, I was just wondering if you remembered.”

”Ha…ha…ha. Very funny.”

She pinched my cheek before getting up and heading towards my armoire. She pulled a large package from one of the drawers and slowly strolled back towards the bed. I bounced around like an excited puppy. This only made my Nanai laugh, causing her to halt her trek to my bed. I ran in place on my fluffy bed in hopes that it will bring her closer to her destination. Just to tease me, she starts walking at a snail’s pace towards the bed.

“oOohh…come on! The suspense is killing me!”

”Ok…ok…I’m coming. Keep your crown on!”

”Hey!”

“I’m only teasing love. Here,” she hands me the package, “ I hope you like it as much as you liked your first gift.”

As anxious as I was, I took my time untying the gauzy ribbon and lifting the lid, I wanted to fully savor the moment. What lay before me took my breath away.

“Oh Nanai…it’s beautiful.” I breathed as I lifted the garment up out of the box.

“Come here small one, let’s try it on.”

I hopped off the bed and handed her the garment.

“There…now go see what it looks like.” She says spinning me to face the mirror.

“Wow.” I whisper as I turn slightly from my right to me left admiring the embroidery on my new cloak.

The black fabric felt soft like fur but had a slightly different texture. The coloration kind of reminded me of a black panther walking in the moonlight and it had an almost animalistic sheen. Golden leaves, flowers and curlicues bordered the edges of the cloak, and at times the leaves and blooms seemed to unfurl or tilt towards the candle light.

“It’s absolutely gorgeous Nanai. Where on earth did you find it?”

“Well dear, the week you were to be born, I had traveled to Lemon Grove to visit my cousin. On the way back to Pearl Ridge, I stopped by Sapphire Bay Pub for some refreshments. It just so happened that the people of Sapphire Bay were holding a festivity of sorts in honor of your upcoming birth. People were out and about singing and dancing, and traveling merchants came to sell their wares. I happened upon a feisty pixie named Kairi who was determined to sell me something off of her cart before letting me leave her presence. That was when I came upon that cloak, she told me that there was something special about it, but she wouldn’t tell me what that special thing was.”

“After sixteen years, you were never curious to find out what that special thing was?”

“No small one, I wanted you to discover it yourself.”

“Wow, how exciting. Did she give you any clues?”

”No…but I’m sure you won’t have any trouble figuring that out.”

“Thank you Nanai, your gifts are wonderful.”

“I’m glad you liked them. There’s actually one more gift…”

”Another one?!? Really Nanai…you spoil me.”

“A person you love should always be spoiled.”

Have you ever felt so loved that your whole body feels warm and tingly whenever you’re around the person you love? That’s the way I feel when I’m around my Nanai, I love and respect her so much. I wonder how it will feel when I’m head over heels in love with that special someone. It must feel absolutely amazing.

“Well small one, it’s getting late. We better get to bed.”

“Oh? I thought you wanted me to open my last gift. Don’t you want to see me open it?”

”I actually want you to open that gift after I leave.”

”Why?”

“Just trust me on this one love.”

”oOok…” I reply with a lifted eyebrow, “Well…where is it?”

”Underneath the bed.”

”Underneath the bed? Why did you put it there?”

”That’s not important, just make sure you open it after I leave.”

”Alright, I will.”

She and I stroll hand in hand to my bedroom door; before she exits she turns to give me a hug.

“I love you small one, always remember that.”

”Of course Nanai, I love you too.”

As she pulled away I noticed a single tear roll down her cheek.

“Oh Nanai…what’s wrong?”

”Nothing my love, just promise me you’ll open your gift after I leave.”

”Ok…are you sure you’re alright?”

”Yes, I’m ok, but…will you do me a favor?”

“Of course Nanai, anything.”

”Will you stand out in the hallway and sing our lullaby as I walk to my room?”

”Only if you sing with me.”

”You got a deal.” She kissed the center of my palm and tells me the same thing she always says when she leaves me.

“Hold on to my love.”

”I will.” I reply.

She smiles and winks at me before turning to walk down the corridor. I wait until she is a few paces away before I start to sing, she joins in shortly after.

I see waterfalls, crystal skies and millions of stars
Ooh ,when I think of you

I hear lullabies, soft guitars and whispers in the night
Ooh, when I think of you

No one has ever gotten in my soul
And no one has ever made me feel this whole
So many things I didn't know
Ooh, when I think of you

I feel gentle winds embracing me and warm summer nights
Ooh, when I think of you

And I am flying high, spinning round and floating on a breeze
Ooh, when I think of you

No one has ever gotten in my soul
And no one has ever made me feel this whole
So many things I didn't know
Ooh, when I think of you

When I think of you
When I think of you

I could hear her singing with me for the first two verses but as she walked further down the hallway, the fainter her voice got.

When I came to the end of the song, I just stood in the dark hallway.

I wonder what’s on her mind…she was acting so strangely…I hope everything is alright.

Heaving a big sigh and glancing on last time down the dark hallway, I return to my room and shut the doors.

Part V

Post by oObubblesOo »

Hey you guys....

Thank you so much for all of your feedback...you don't know how much it means to me to know how much you all like my story. Your comments and bumps motivate me to write more.

<center> ( Special Thanks to Mango Maiden for the many many bumps  )</center>

I wanted to post another part before I leave for the UK for spring break so I hope you all like it because I won't get another chance to post more until after April 7th...((unless I feel really inspired...hey...it could happen))
It's a mini part...but still a part.

So...here it is...PART V!

<center> oObubblesOo </center>

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

Now…time for the last present

Leaving my uneasiness at the door, I scamper across the floor and dive under the bed in search of my hidden treasure. With a couple of wriggles and a few grunts, I was soon completely underneath my bed.

I’m so glad that my bed is made out of sturdy Oak, otherwise, I’d run the risk of being squished as flat as parchment.

The sheets hanging over the edge of the bed blocked out the soft candlelight, so I groped around in the dark for a while before my hand actually came in contact with something soft.

* Mew *

“Blynx…what are you doing under here?” I said aloud as I wrapped one of my arms around her velvety body.

“Come on…let’s get out of here.”

Scooting on my stomach, I was able to maneuver my way out from under the bed.

“Silly Blynxie Cat …what were you doing? You know I don’t like it when you hide under then bed. You get cobwebs on your whiskers.” I cooed.

Cradling Blynx in my arms, I stroke her under her chin. She shows her content by kneading my shoulder and rumbling a deep purr.

“Hey…what have you got there Blynxie Cat?”

She usually wore a pearl collar around her neck, but it looked like someone had changed it. A thin chain of ocean blue sapphires glittered amongst Blynx’s black pelt. I carefully undid the clasp with one hand as I continued to stroke Blynx with the other. That’s when I noticed the note attached to the chain.

May this little bangle help you when you feel lost,
Warm your soul when you feel all alone in the world,
And glisten brightly when you are truly and passionately loved.
Hold on to my love, NC

“That’s so beautiful…”

Owwie

Blynx playfully nipped at my hand, I guess I stopped petting her when I read the note.

“Why you little brat.”

I roll her onto her back and rub her belly; she stretches her lean body, fully enjoying the massage. I continued to rub Blynx with one hand while admiring the bracelet with the other. Blue specks of light danced along the floor and on my bedspread as the candle light reflected off of the blue gems. Blynx swatted at the lights that darted back and forth across a pillow. I used this distraction to fasten the bracelet around my wrist.

"Silly little Blynxie Cat..." I chuckle to myself.

Standing up, I carefully undo the knot that attached the note to the bracelet and re-read the note.

"She's a remarkable woman isn't she Blynxie Cat...too bad I won't be able to thank her in person tomorrow. Stupid Rosemary has me escorting Lord Valenti and his parents around Pearl City tomorrow. Infernal woman! I'd rather run around naked than hang around that stupid dolt and his parents tomorrow."

* Sigh *

I don't know why it comforts me to talk to Blynx, I know she can't fully comprehend what I'm saying...but it always seems to me that she understands my moods. It's kind of comforting being able to confide in her. Plus...she's a great listener.

"Maybe I should write her a thank you note...that way she'll know how much I truly appreciate the gifts she gave me."

Walking over to my desk, I pull out a quill and a blank piece of parchment.

Dearest Nanai Claidi,
Thank you so much for your generous gifts. You never cease to amaze me. Each gift was wondrous in its own way and I'll never be able to fully express my gratitude. Thank you for being a sturdy shoulder to lean on. I know these past few days have been difficult, but I'm sure that it'll work out with Lord Valenti...

Before signing my name, I decided to re-read the note.

"...But I'm sure that it'll work out with Lord Valenti... Why doesn't that sound right to me? How about..."

We will grow to love one another. NOPE
I'll try to give Lord Valenti another chance. Uh-uh
I will open my heart to love.

"...I will open my heart to love..."

That's the first thing that has made sense to me all day. Why should I have to comply to this ridiculous tradition? Why should I have my life dictated to me? Why can't I find my own love on my own terms?

Irritated with life, I push away from my desk and stomp towards my bed. Plopping down face first, I scream out my frustration and anger into a pillow.

* MEOW *

Oops...I forgot about Blynx

Blynx was still lying on the bed when I stomped on over to let out my anger, and I had inadvertently smashed her with the pillow that I screamed into. Blynx thinking that she was in trouble, scrambled off of the bed and dashed underneath the bed, knocking over several papers on my bedside table in the process.

Scooting off the bed I lifted the bed skirt and peered underneath the bed in order to soothe my frazzled cat.

"Oh Blynxie Cat...I'm so sorry...mommy didn't mean...."

My voice trails off as I notice a map of Serenity Isle on top of all the other papers that had scattered onto the floor.

Hmmmm...I didn't even know that I put that map there...

Dropping the bed skirt, I picked up the map of my homeland. Leaning closer to a candle, I trace the edges of the palace's borders.

"Pearl Ridge..."

Our palace is closer to the middle of the island so we're quite a ways from the sea. Scanning the parchment, several names of towns jump out at me.

"Emerald Towers.... Misty Meadow.... Siren’s Cove.... Golden Plains...Lemon Grove....humph. I bet they don't have arranged marriages in small towns like Lemon Grove. Why couldn't I have been born into a family in Lemon Grove."

That's when it hits me.

Why can't I have a family in Lemon Grove, well...maybe not a family per say, but I could have a life...no...FREEDOM in a place like Lemon Grove.

"I could run away..." I whisper. "That's it Blynxie Cat! I'll run away."

My mind begins to reel at the possibilities. I could make my own choices, wear what I wanted to wear, go where I wanted to go. Do anything I wanted when I wanted to do it. I could live wherever I wanted.

But where would I go?

Scanning the map, my eyes pick out a name written in large letters.

"Maybe I could go to Emerald Towers.... no...Too many people know my face there.... Golden Plains...no...Stupid Aunt Lorana and her nasty daughter have a home there. If I go there.... they’ll know I'm there within seconds of my arrival. Damn Gossip Queens! Maybe I'll just pick someplace by chance."

Walking over to one of the windows, I look at the many sun catchers that I have hanging from silken cords. During the day, they cast little rainbows across the wooden floors. The only one that I could reach without standing on a chair was a in the shape of a small heart. Sun catcher in hand, I walk back towards my desk and unfurl the map of Serenity Isle. I placed a book on either end of the map to keep it from curling up on me while I'm choosing my destination.

Dangling the trinket over the map, I close my eyes and give it a swish before lowering the heart shaped crystal towards the surface.

How funny....I'm choosing my new home by following my heart...literally!

* Clink *

I open my eyes to see the name of my new hometown.

"Ewwww...Desperation Peak...how depressing...let's try that again."

Squishing my eyes shut I give the crystalline sun catcher another swish and open my eyes again when I feel it come in contact with the surface.

"Malodorous Marsh!?! Who comes up with these names? I'm definitely not going to live there....okay....fine. Screw fate....I'm taking matters into my own hands!"

Grabbing a few more candles and a fresh piece of parchment, I sat down, deciding to list the towns that sounded appealing to me.

1) Flower Hill - small village out in the countryside; sounds sweet
2) Silver Springs - mountain village; well known for their apple pies
3) Lemon Grove - in the countryside; heard lots of nice things about it from NC

Wait...if Nanai goes to visit her cousin and sees me there...she might have to bring me back. Better scratch that last idea out.

4) Misty Meadow - close to the forest; small town with houses spaced far apart...(good possibility)
5) Sapphire Bay...

Sapphire Bay....isn't that the town that Nanai got my cloak from?

"Hmmmm....coastal town.... close enough to the beach with out being right on it.... not too far from the forest.... it’s got the best of both worlds...it almost sounds too good to be true. Well...I think I found my new home Blynx."

Turning to face my bed, I noticed that Blynx had decided to return to the bed. She rolled onto her side and proceeded to wash her face.

"Blynxie Cat...I know that I accidentally smashed you but that doesn't mean that you have to act like you won't even miss me."

My voice had distracted her from her washing so she paused to look at me through sleepy eyes, her tongue still sticking out from her furry lips. I walk over and poke her on her rough pink tongue.

"Silly kitty...put that tongue back in that mouth and help me pack."

Blynx batted at my hand as I planted a kiss on her furry head. Bouncing off of my bed I bounded over to the closet. I pushed and pulled on a large wooden trunk for about five minutes before realizing that it would be too hard to drag down the stairs let alone Sapphire Bay. After tossing several handbags out of my closet, I finally came upon a bag large enough to carry a few necessary items.

"Now let's see...I'll need a night gown, no maybe two, a morning tea dress, at least three evening gowns, who knows how many parties they throw in Sapphire Bay.... seven sets of undergarments, stockings, garters, slippers, high heels, four petticoats, three corsets, my cloak, a pillow, a blanket, my hair brushes, a towel, cosmetics...."

After I was sure I had everything I might need stacked in their appropriate piles I turned to get the bag. Looking back and forth between the bag and the piles that I had neatly arranged...I knew that that bag was much too small to hold all of the stuff that I had intended to bring. So after throwing several items back in the closet I ended up stuffing the following articles into the bag.

Two nightgowns (including the one I was wearing)
Three sets of undergarments
Two pairs of stockings
My two plainest Tea Dresses
Two evening dresses with jewels sewn onto the fabric (I could rip off some jewels to pay for things)
A small blanket and an even smaller pillow
One towel
Three pairs of slippers
My cloak (which I was wearing)
My hairbrushes
Five candles
A box of matches
A letter opener (hey...it's sharp!)
Some left over cookies, an apple and a flask of water (from breakfast this morning)
And a few vials of my favorite perfume

"Well Blynxie Cat...I think I packed everything..."

Blynx had already curled up and was fast asleep. I tip toed over and gently rubbed her between her ears, she didn't open her eyes but I could hear her purring.

Just one more thing before I go...

Walking over to the desk, I tucked the map inside a pocket in the cloak, burned my list and thank-you note and started to write a new note to my dear Nanai.

Dearest Nanai...

Following my heart...take care of Blynx for me.
Hold on to my love

Yours truly,
Small One

Picking up my bag, I looked around my room on last time etching every last detail into my memory.

"Good-bye Blynxie Cat..."

With that, I stepped into the dark hallway and closed the door.

After closing the door, I sling my bag over my shoulder, pull up the hood from my cloak and start walking down the lengthy corridor.

Why is it that the trip towards your destination always seems to take a million times longer than it does when you're coming back? I never truly understood that.

* Ba-bum *

* Ba-bum *

* Ba-bum *

I cross my arms in front of my chest to keep my heart from leaping out of my body. I’ve never heard it pound so hard in my life. I start to dig for the flask of water inside of my bag.

Wait…this is the only water I’ll have until I get outside…I won’t have time to refill it tonight…I better save it

Closing the bag, I continue making my way down the seemingly endless hallway. As I near the end of the hall I start to slow my pace.

Please please please…don’t let anyone be guarding the stairs tonight.

Crossing my fingers, I creep along the edge of the wall and peer down the staircase.

“Whew…” I exhale deeply. “Thank the gods…”

Clutching my bag closer to my body, I start to descend the first of three flights of stairs. As I come to the bottom of the first flight of stairs, an interesting thought prickles my brain.

Wait a second…what am I thinking? They’re not just going to let me waltz on out the front door, unescorted in the middle of the night. I better exit the palace through the servant’s wing.

Making a left down one hallway, walking through a few sitting rooms and walking down another two flights of stairs, I finally make it to the ground floor. Several minutes pass by and I have yet to see anyone. I subconsciously quicken my pace.

The faster I get out of here, the closer I’ll be to my own freedom.

A faint sound reached my ears as I drew closer to the Grand Foyer.

Oh no…how could’ve I forgotten?

Walking at a snail’s pace, I slowly slink along the far edge of the foyer. Two guards are posted near the doors; I use the term “posted” loosely.

Pearl City is virtually crime free, so there isn’t much need for actual guards, but we keep them handy to uphold tradition and to ensure the visitors who come from not so safe cities that they are safe within our palace walls.

I digress…one of the men sat slumped over on the floor noisily snoring into his folded arms and the other was reading a novel of some sort by the light of a stumpy candle.

Hmmm…what I need is a distraction.

Thinking on my feet, I unfasten the earring from my left ear and fling it somewhere into the darkness before ducking behind a large potted plant.

* Clink clink clink *

The guard reading the book snapped it shut upon hearing the noise.

“Hey Reginald…Reg….hey REG!” The first guard whispered noisily to the other.

* Snort *

“Huh?!? What…who goes there?” the second guard replied.

“Shhh…not so loud. I think I heard something.”

The second guard cocked his head and listened.

“Oh leave me be Marcus…it was probably only yer imagination. I told you those spooky stories would get to you.”

“Shut-up…it ain’t the story I heard clinking around in the dark.” Marcus replied huffily.

“oOoOo…clinking eh? Sounds dangerous…what do you think is gonna get us? A firefly?” Reginald retorted sarcastically.

“Fireflies don’t clink you moron. They don’t make any noise at all.”

“Then what you grumbling about? Just let me get back to sleep.”

No no no! I can’t get across to the servant’s wing without being seen unless they move!

Removing my other earring from my right ear I toss it in the same direction as its mate.

* Clink clink clink clink *

This time I got both of their attention.

“Reg….Reg…you had to have heard it that time.”

“I sure did, let’s go find out what that is.”

Weapons drawn, the two men stalked off in the direction of my “dangerous” earrings. With the room cleared, I hoisted my bag back over my shoulder and scurried across the marble foyer towards the servant’s wing.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

Walking down on of the corridors in the servant’s wing, I could hear several different people snoring behind closed doors. Some were soft, some were squeaky, some were wheezy and some were deep and rumbley. The way the noises echoed back and forth to each other, it was like listening to some sort of bizarre animalistic conversation. I suppressed a giggle as I heard someone snort like a pig.

* Click *

Somewhere further down the hallway a door opened. I was just barely able to duck into a nearby doorway when two giggly lovers stepped out into the doorway.

“Oh Gerry-kins. You naughty naughty boy, why don’t we go into my room where it’s a little more intimate.”

“Anything you say Rosie dear just let me grab my robe, you wouldn’t want me to catch my death of cold now would you?”

“You needn’t worry about being cold Gerry-kins…I’ll keep you nice and warm.”

‘Gerry-kins’ leaned over and whispered something into ‘Rosie’s’ ear as she twirled one of his reddish curls around her finger.

“Oh Gerry-kins…” she breathed while tugging him into what I supposed was her room.

‘Gerry-kins’ and ‘Rosie’ ducked into another room giggling like a couple of smitten lovers.

How disgusting!?! Sir Waverly and Rosemary!! I think I’m going to be sick!

I waited a few moments in the doorway, making sure that the starry-eyed twosome weren’t coming back out before I quickly darted down the hall.

I think I’m going to be scarred for the rest of my life. EWWWWW!!

“I feel soooo dirty,” I say to myself, “well…I guess even Rosemary deserves somebody to love.” Shuddering, I try to shake off that creeped out feeling that had momentarily washed upon me before continuing my way down the dark hall.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

After walking a bit more, I finally come to the door that leads to the kitchens, not the main kitchens but the kitchen the servants use to prepare their daily meals. Lucky for me, the cooks were most likely preparing the morning’s meal in the main kitchens so this room was completely empty. I quickly crossed the vacant room, pausing briefly to stuff a few pieces of fruit, rolls and a bottle of wine into my already bulging bag. I then move towards the heavy door that separates me from the world outside.

I reach out to turn the knob, but I hesitate. My hand seems to itch and tingle as if it were asleep as it hovers inches away from the knob that will lead me to my new life.

Come on now, it’s too late to turn back now! I chastise myself. Unless I want to be married off to someone I don’t even love, I better get out of here before I get caught.

Licking my lips and tucking a stray hair behind my ear, I grasp the knob and give it a hard turn. But just as I turn it, someone flings the door wide open from the outside. The force of the door pinned me between the door and the wall keeping me from breathing properly.

I bite my lip to keep from expressing my pain verbally. Whoever has opened the door from the outside, had decided to lean on it, almost as if they were unsure whether or not to come in.

“Hurry up Lydia…if we’re not there to serve her royal highness her tea and cookies, we’ll be done for!”

”Relax Mel…relax…just breathe okay. She’ll get her rotten old cookies and tea. Besides, she’s probably still fast asleep.”

“You don’t know that…she could have sensed that we’d left…”Melody gasped faintly, “…do you think she’ll have us hanged?”

“By the gods Melody. She’s only royalty, not a deity!”

“They’re pretty close though. Haven’t you ever heard that rumor that the kings and queens of Pearl Ridge are direct descendants from the king of gods himself?”

“That wasn’t a rumor dear, that’s an old wives tale. Melody…if you’re so insistent that I hurry up, I would think that you would want to help me with my apron instead of fretting by the door.”

The weight from the door shifted slightly and then was lifted. I took this brief moment of relief to adjust my body so I wouldn’t be so awkwardly positioned if Melody decided to lean on the door again.

“So…was it worth it?” Melody inquired.

“Hmmm? Was what worth it?”

“Your little rendezvous with that man? What did you say his name was?”

“Oh…you mean Kyle? Of course it was worth it. Come on Mel, he is the complete package. Soft lips, gorgeous eyes, the body of a god. MmmMMmmm! The fact that he’s nobility just sweetens the deal.”

Kyle?!? As in Kyle Valenti?!? That pig!! He proposed to me less than 24 hours ago and he’s already with this girl!

“Kyle….as in Lord Valenti?”

“Yes you ninny…I just said that.”

“But but but…isn’t that Princess Lizbeth’s fiancée! They were just engaged last night!”

“Yes yes…I know, but he doesn’t love her.”

”And you think he loves you?”

”If it were only so…his heart belongs to some hussy who works in a brothel. I always tune him out when he starts talking about her.”

“Well then…why is he with you?”

”Because she’s unwilling to commit, and besides…a man has needs doesn’t he?”

”I…uh…um…I…”

“Oh stop sputtering you big ninny…it’s only natural to have desires you know.”

“Yes…I suppose, but must I always have to hear about your desires?”

”I didn’t even know you had desires Mel dear.”

”Well…not desires per say…”

“Uh huh…I thought as much…stop mumbling and let’s get a move on.”

Uh oh

Thinking quickly, I pulled the hood from my cloak as far over my face as possible. I had just tucked my hand back underneath its velvety folds when the door slammed shut.

I’ve come this far…oh please don’t let them see me, please PLEASE don’t let them see me!

Lydia grabbed Melody’s hand and pulled her towards the door that I had entered just moments ago.

“I know about desires Lydee…really…”

“Uh huh…come on…hurry it up…”

”No really…I do…LYDEE!”

I stood there, momentarily frozen to the wall.

“They didn’t see me…”I whispered,” I was less than two paces away and they didn’t even see me.”

Move! Before someone else walks in! my mind screamed.

Securing my bag, I silently swept out the door closing it quietly behind me.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

The sudden rush of the cool morning air made my lungs slightly ache. I took a moment to regulate my breathing before continuing my journey.

Now…as long as I can still fit through that old hole in the wall…I should be fine.

I crept along the palace wall, making sure to duck underneath the windows. When I ran out of wall, I moved towards the brush, and from the brush I moved towards the trees. The farther away I got from the palace itself, the larger the foliage became. In a matter of minutes, I had made my way across one of Pearl Ridge’s largest gardens to the old familiar hole in the wall.

Isabel and I had discovered the hole many years ago. We were chasing butterflies in the garden when we stumbled across it…literally. I tripped over a rock and fell through a curtain of ivy that hid the hole from view. Isabel had thought that the wall was possessed and had sucked me from this world until I popped my head back through the hole. She kissed my cheeks then slapped my hand for making her worry. It’s funny how matronly Isabel was towards me, worried sick one minute, angry with me the next.

For years and years, she and I snuck into Pearl City, dressed as commoners, so we could play with the children from the city. We were each other’s best friend, but we didn’t always get along splendidly, we longed for friendship outside of the family, and we found it…both in and outside the palace walls.

It felt weird standing here alone, without Isabel by my side. This was the first of many days that Isabel would no longer be right by my side to console me. Choking back a sob of loneliness that had washed over me, I stepped through the ivy curtain, not bothering to look back at the stronghold I had called home for the last sixteen years of my life. All I could think of was getting away from the dull pain that settled itself in my stomach.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

Brushing a stray tear from my cheek and covering my head with the hood of my cloak, I continued down a small grassy slope until I came to the main road. Pausing briefly at the top of the block I pondered to myself.

Maybe I should take the side streets, it would take longer, but I wouldn’t be in plain sight…but…if I creep around in the shadows, I might draw the wrong type of attention…someone might think I’m up to something…

As I stood there contemplating my choices, a man came up to me and tapped me on the shoulder.

“Excuse me miss, are you lost?”

”Ummm…no….I….I was….just trying to remember what to buy at the market.” I managed to stammer out.

“Oh…well then…you should try Miss Shannon’s sweet buns if you get the chance…they’re lil bites of heaven they are.” The kind man replied with a wink.

“Thank you…I’ll keep that in mind.”

“Have a nice morning miss.”

With a tip of his hat, the man turned and started to walk away. I stood there for a moment with my jaw hanging.

“Thank you!” I called out towards the kind stranger.

With a wave of his hand the man disappeared inside a dimly lit building nearby.

How exhilarating! I thought for sure my heart was gong to leap right out of my chest. Good thing he didn’t recognize me.

Switching my heavy bag from one arm to the other, I decided I would continue down the main road.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

Unlike the still sleeping castle, Pearl City was already showing signs of life. Shoppe keepers were opening their shades, allowing the first rays of sunlight to flood in, while their assistants swept up the front steps. A florist arranged brightly colored nosegays on a cart as a baker lay freshly baked loaves of bread on a table.

“mmMMmm…that smells delicious.”

Digging a free hand into my bag, I pull out a slightly warm roll and a few grapes.

It may not be grand…but it is good enough to eat.

After walking for a good twenty minutes, I paused to remove an annoying pebble that had made its way into my slipper. Balancing on one foot and shaking out my slipper, I noticed that I had stopped in front of a tavern. In front of the tavern, a tired looking horse was strapped to a cart piled with hay. I walked up to the horse and pet it on its soft muzzle; he chuffled softly and gently prodded my bag with his nose.

“Hey now…don’t be rude…I’ll share a little something.” I said laughingly to the gentle beast.

I pulled out another small handful of grapes and fed them to the sweet old carthorse. Scratching the horse on the ears, I turned to walk away when I three men walked out of the tavern. Since I’m a little on the petite side, the horse blocked me from their view.

“Well Jason, it was nice to see you again. When do you think you and your son will be coming back into town?”

“Probably at the end of summer, Olivia says she’ll be having the baby in a few months so I’m sure she’ll be able to handle the journey by August.”

“And what about you my boy, do you think you’ll be a good big brother to this new lil one?”

”I’m not a boy anymore Uncle Leo, I’m nearly thirteen.”

“Oh…sorry young man. Do you think you’ll be a good big brother.”

“Of course uncle, I’ll be the best big brother there is.”

The men chuckled and hugs were exchanged all around.

“Do write me when you get back to Flower Hill.”

Flower Hill…that’s about a three-day journey from Sapphire Bay.

As the two men moved towards the front of the cart, I slinked towards the back. I waited until the young boy and his father started to climb onto the front seat before wiggling my way through the hay. I had just nestled into the sweet smelling hay when I heard the crack of the reigns.

“Good bye uncle, we’ll see you at the end of the summer!” The boy called out.

“Good bye…a safe journey to you both!”

The cart lumbered down the road for about an hour before we came to the outskirts of Pearl City. Taking out the map from my pocket, I noted what route I would take from Flower Hill to my new home.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

After viewing the countryside for a couple of hours, the slow and steady pace of the cart had soon rocked me to sleep. I had awakened several hours later to the smell of sausages. The sun had already started to disappear beyond the horizon, painting the sky soft hues of lavender, rose, and soft touches of a pale orange.

The boy and his father had made a small fire off the side of the road where they were presently cooking sausages over the fire. They were quietly talking to themselves, the scene set before me seemed so serene. It was nice to see how a father and his son could just sit and talk about anything that came to mind, however, this vision before me also brought a pang to my heart. Jealousy.

How I wished, I too could confide in parents as easily as this boy made it seem to be. Sighing softly to myself, I turned my back on the happy scene and focused on the sounds my persistent belly was making. I took advantage of this time alone to munch of some fruit and cookies. I washed my “meal” down with a few swigs of wine and then began to admire the stars in the ever-darkening sky.

I had just started to doze off when I felt the cart shift a bit. The boy had just jumped into the hay and was laying just a few feet away from me. I felt my pulse quicken as my heart thundered in my chest.

Great…if his father finds me…I’ll be done for!

“Good night father. Are you sure you don’t want to sleep up here with me? There’s plenty of room.”

“No my boy…I don’t know how you do it…but I never could sleep well on a bed of hay.”

“Alright then, pleasant dreams.”

“Pleasant dreams my boy, don’t even think about sidling up to that girl while you’re sleeping, I’m sure she could knock the living daylights outta you if she wanted to.”

“Aww pa…you know I wouldn’t do anything of the kind!”

That’s when I sat up.

“How did you know I was in here?”

”I noticed you get in at tavern my dear. I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to frighten you away.”

Immediately embarrassed, I started to climb out of the hay.

“I’m so sorry sir, I didn’t mean to stow away in your cart, and I just needed to get to Flower Hill. I can pay you…”

“You needn’t worry my dear, we don’t mind the company. Just be careful when you’re hiding in the hay. You almost fell off twice, Sam had to pull you up higher in the hay just so you wouldn’t fall off.”

A boy actually held me while I was sleeping? How embarrassing!

I feel my cheeks stain crimson.

“Thank you Sam for your kindness.” I whisper.

“Oh…. it was nothing really.”

I could tell that he was just as embarrassed as I was because he had suddenly taken a keen interest in a knot in the wood of the cart.

“Well then…. now that this has all been taken care of. I wish you both a good night.”

“Good night.”

“Good night.”

I don’t know how I managed to fall asleep, I had slept most of the day, and yet I still felt completely drained of all energy. Taking the pillow and blanket from my bag, I nestled back into the hay for a good night’s rest.

Reluctant Royal Part VII

Post by oObubblesOo »

Okay...okay...I know I've said this before...but I'm soooooooo sorry for taking so long to post a new part. I have been bombarded with school stuff and crazy work&volunteer schedules have been driving me mad these past few weeks. And to make matters worse...I have finals this upcoming week. But after that...I'll be able to spend a lot more time writing.

...a quick note...
You all are probably tired of Liz's part of the story...but don't worry...she's to encounter an Amber Eyed stranger in Part VIII.
((which I'm currently working on ))

So...with out any further ado...I present for your reading pleasure

RR Part VII

<center>oO bubbles Oo</center>

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

<center> BACK IN PEARL RIDGE </center>

Rereading the note for about the millionth time, Claidi allowed a single tear to roll down her cheek. She had known that here little Lizbeth would never willingly marry Lord Valenti; it just wasn’t meant to be. She was proud that Liz had taken a stand against her unwanted engagement, yet it didn’t make the situation any easier.

She hated not being able to be there with Liz on her journey to find love, but someone needed to be here to cover her tracks. If word got out that Princess Lizbeth had disappeared into the night, the King would organize a massive search, thus hindering Liz from finding love.

Another tear rolled down her cheek and dripped onto the page, blurring a word or two. Sighing softly to herself, Claidi folded the note and tucked it into her pocket. She wiped away her tears and began straightening up the room.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

Claidi had just finished organizing Lizbeth’s closet when Rosemary came bursting in with pen and parchment in hand.

“Rise and shine your highness…we have lots of things to do...” she sang out.

“Good morning Rosemary.”

”Oh…good morning Mistress Claidi…I didn’t know you had come back. How is you cousin feeling?”

”Fine thanks.”

”That’s nice to know…have you already awakened the princess? Or is she still hiding underneath all those blankets?”

“Haven’t you hear dear? She’s gone off to Turquoise Manor.”

“Turquoise Manor? The summer villa? Well…why ever for?”

“Well…she was so excited about her engagement to Lord Valenti, she wanted to spend some time along to contemplate her wedding plans.”

“But...the wedding isn't for five years. Why would she want to go so soon?"

"You know as well as anyone that a girl has been dreaming about her wedding day since she was a small child..."

"Yes but..."

"It's rude to interrupt dear. Please mind your manners."

"I'm so sorry Mistress Claidi, please continue." Rosemary half whispered all the while blushing furiously.

"Designing a wedding dress could take months, and then there's the fittings, the bride's maids dresses, the invitation design, the guest list, the flower arrangements. It all takes up a great deal of time, and Princess Lizbeth only wanted to get a head start on things before it was too late."

"Yes...I suppose that does make sense. But who will care for her while she's at Turquoise Manor?"

"Silly child, I'm to meet her there later on this day. Now, please, do not trouble yourself any further by thinking too much of this trivial matter. All shall be well."

"Yes...all shall be well..." Rosemary mechanically repeated, "...have a safe journey Mistress Claidi."

"I shall, and remember, keep this to yourself. You are lucky to share such privileged information, but we don't want unwanted and uninvited guests to come barging into Princess Lizbeth's sanctuary while she's preparing for the upcoming occasion."

"Yes Mistress Claidi."

With a twirl of her skirts, Rosemary vacated the room and closed the doors softly behind her. Claidi smiled softly to herself as she patted the pocket, which contained the last note written by her charge.

"Sweet angelic Lizbeth. I hope your love is worth all of this trouble."

<center> ON THE ROAD </center>

The days flew by like minutes; I had already spent eight cheerful days traveling with Jason and Samuel. Our conversations had all been pleasant yet superficial. We've talked about the weather, wildlife and flowers throughout our journey together. Neither of Samuel nor Jason knew my name, nor did they ask me for it, but it didn't seem to matter what my name was, they just seemed content with my company. So when they referred to me, they called me Lily, after the flowers that were embroidered on my nightgown.

"Well Lily, we should arrive in Flower Hill tomorrow morning. Are you sure you don't need a place to stay? Our house isn't a palace, but it does offer a place to rest ones weary bones."

"You are so kind to offer Jason, but I simply can't accept. My...umm...aunt will be dreadfully worried if I don't go straight home."

"Well...if there is nothing that I can say to persuade you..."

"Thank you for the offer, but I shall be alright traveling alone to her home."

Jason seemed to ponder this for a moment. I was almost worried that he wouldn't let me go unless I stayed at least one night in his home. I have to admit, the offer sounded tempting, but the longer I lingered in Flower Hill would only remind me on how close I was to achieving my goal of creating a new life...in Sapphire Bay.

"Very well. We shall miss you Lily dear. Won't we Sam?"

"Um...yes...of course..."Sam replied blushing all the while.

"Sweet Sam. You will forever be in my memories."

I bent down and lightly kissed Samuel on the cheek. His face burned a soft shade of crimson before he excused himself to tend to the horse. Jason laughed heartily at his son's embarrassment and rearranged the hay on the cart.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

<center> LATER ON THAT NIGHT</center>

After Jason and Samuel had gone to sleep, I crept off the wagon and made my way towards the dying embers of that night's fire pit. I carefully withdrew my map from my pocket and studied the lines and squiggles in the quickly fading light.

Now...if I head straight through that glen, and travel through Jade Forest, I should make it to Sapphire Bay in about three days.

Re-folding my map and tucking it back into the pocket of my cloak, I carefully gathered my belongings and prepared to set off. Taking one last look around the make shift campsite, I bit my lip and hesitated.

I can't just run off, they've helped me get this far.

Pulling out one of my fancier dresses, I ripped off several jewels and gems; I then hiked up my skirts and tore off a small section of my petticoat. I folded this small piece of cloth into a bag and then laid it on the front lip of the cart before I turned and disappeared into the darkness.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

“I'm such a ninny.” I softly sniffled to myself. “A grown lady does not cry like a two year old. Besides…I had to leave them, if I had stayed with them I would have run the risk of being found with them…and then that would only get them in trouble.”

I had already been walking for most of the night, the soft golden rays of the sun were just beginning to peak over the horizon. I had just reached the edge of Jade Forest when my very articulate and persistent tummy began to rumble. Pausing briefly by a sapling, I sat down and enjoyed a small snack of cookies and fruit before continuing on my journey.

While sitting underneath the seedling, I looked around and absorbed my surroundings. The scene set before me was so tranquil. Wildflowers were blooming here and there and small butterflies softly floated on the sweet gentle breeze. I thought I spied a small little bunny somewhere near the edge of the forest but it darted away so quickly that I didn’t really get a good look at it. As I sat there, a fresh wave of sweet grass and fragrant wildflowers rushed into my lungs with every breath I took. Exhaling softly, I idly fiddled with a smooth strand of my hair.

“I knew I should have brought my sketchbook with me.” I muttered under my breath. “I could have spent some of my free time drawing instead of playing with my hair.”

Back at Pearl Ridge, I had my own art studio where I’d spend countless hours drawing and painting. Art was my means of escape, well…that and books. Through art, I would be able to freely express my feelings without being criticized for not being “ladylike” or “proper.” My biggest source of inspiration within the palace’s walls was Isabel’s music. While painting and drawing seemed to be my talent Isabel’s lay within music. She would sit in her music room and play her harp as I sat in the next room. I would lose myself in the delicate strains of her songs. I don’t know what it was about her melodies, but they seemed to bring my paintbrush and imagination to life. Isabel was my biggest fan; she would go on and on about how much she loved my paintings. She even had several of my pieces displayed in her room.

“Well…there’s no sense in me just sitting around wishing for stuff I don’t have.”

The sun had finally risen high enough to shed some light into the once menacing looking forest. Standing up and brushing off some grass off my behind, I continued on my way.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

“This looks like a good place.”

I had been traveling all day and the sun was beginning to sink faster and faster beyond the horizon. I decided to rest within the gigantic roots of an old gnarly tree. Dropping my heavy bag and rotating my shoulders I began to forage for kindling for tonight’s fire.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

Half and hour later, wrapped up in my cloak and my blanket I sat as close to the fire as I could without burning off my eyelashes. Even though the day had been fairly warm, the night air remained icy. My teeth were chattering so hard that my jaw began to ache. The wind seemed to whistle and shriek as it whipped around the trees trunks, each gust caused my small fire to flicker and dance as it desperately tried to stay lit. The poor flame was fighting a losing battle and was soon snuffed out. I was just about to relight it when I thought better of it, I had a limited amount of matches and I didn’t want to waste them. Moving closer to one of the large roots, I unpacked all the clothes I had and made a type of nest. Burrowing deep within the mountainous fabrics, I shut my eyes and tried to sleep.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

“AaaoooooOOOOooooo”

A long woeful howl breaks the silence of the forest. My eyes pop open as the cry reaches my ears. Using my index finger, I carefully move a petticoat from my line of vision. Although my view of my surroundings is limited, I spot the creature almost immediately.

A lone white wolf sticks out in the sleepy forest like a pearl amongst a sea of emeralds. I can see its hot breath puff out like small clouds in the chilly night air as it intently sniffs the ground. I gasp softly as the moonlight glimmers off of its pointed ivory fangs. The wolf’s ears perked up as it sought the location from which the low sound came. Mentally cursing myself, I feel my muscles tense up as the wolf nears my campsite.

Frozen in terror, I silently watch the wolf’s lithe form as it explores my now cold fire pit. It is close enough for me to see its muscles flex as it pauses to scratch at the dirt where I had been seated only a few hours ago. It licks its chops as it slowly approaches my make shift nest. Too scared to think straight, I don’t know whether I should scream or run away, so instead I lay there like a stone. Squeezing my eyes shut I silently prayed for a miracle.

Oh please don’t let it be hungry! Please please PLEASE don’t let it be hungry!!

I had been so busy with my wishful thinking that I didn’t even notice that the stealthy creature had snuck up on me. When I opened my eyes, I beheld a large moist nose sniffing softly through my makeshift peephole. The nose was soon replaced with an eye as blue as a robin’s egg. We stayed that way for a moment, observing each other etching details into our memories. As we gazed at each other, the wolf’s eyes seemed to reach into my heart and touch my soul. I’m not sure why, but as the wolf gazed at me, I felt my fear melt away. The terror that had once clutched at my heart was replaced with a strange sense of comfort. The wolf huffed out a single blast of air before it turned and walked away.

I lay there for a moment, completely dumbstruck. It took me a moment to realize that the wolf didn’t want to eat me. I wanted to leap out of my nest to make sure that the beast had left. I wanted to sing and dance. I wanted to shriek and cry. Most of all, I wanted to know what I had been spared, not that I had minded, but the whole ordeal had boggled my mind. I was just about to sit up when my eyes began to droop. My eyelids felt like they were made out of lead and before I knew it I was fast asleep.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

* GASP *

I sit bolt upright early the following morning.

“Oh no…I’m blind….I’M BLIND!” I shriek as I wildly flail my arms about. My violent gestures caused my cloak to fall harmlessly off my head.

“Oh.” I muttered. I felt my cheeks burn with embarrassment as I glanced from my left to my right.

“oOohhh…Lizbeth you big ninny.” I softly chastise myself. “The animals don’t care if you act foolish…there’s no reason to blush like a young school girl.”

Standing up, I busied myself with repacking my things before today’s journey.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

As I strolled underneath the forest’s cool green canopy, I absorbed the sights of the Jade Forest like a sponge absorbs water. I was careful not to step on any flowers or loose twigs. I wanted to make sure I didn’t disturb the wildlife any more than I had to. As I walked towards my destination, I made sure to keep one eye on the path and the other on my companion.

I had thought that our brief encounter had ended last night, but it wasn’t until I paused for my noontime meal when I noticed her.

Him.

It.

Whatever.

I saw the wolf by a tree. At first I thought it was my imagination playing tricks on me, but there was no confusing that strangely comforting gaze. It peered at me from behind a tree before it retreated back into the foliage like sea foam creeping back into an emerald sea. I saw Kai, that’s what I decided to call it, several times that afternoon. Each sighting had been briefer than the one before. Kai flitted between tree trunks faster than I could blink. At first I thought that Kai was just working up an appetite, that he or she hadn’t been hungry last night and that today was the day that it was going to feast on my flesh. I kept waiting for Kai to leap out onto the trail and devour me whole, but it never happened. In fact, I traveled all day and never came face to face with the dangerous beauty.

I had just paused to build that night’s fire when a flash of light illuminated the quickly darkening forest. A tremendous boom soon followed the sudden burst of brightness rumbling my body from the inside out in the process.

“Oh no.” I whined as I slowly tilted my head up to peer through the dense treetops.

* SPLAT *

A big fat raindrop fell from the sky and hit me squarely on the forehead. It was soon followed by several more, each one icier than the previous one had been. Quickly repacking my clothes I stood up and began searching for some shelter. The rain soon plastered my travel weary nightgown to my body, so I removed my cloak in hopes that it would keep me warm once I found shelter. My heavy wet hair hung down my back adding extra weight to my already heavy load as I tromped through the now muddy undergrowth. The sudden shower changed quickly into a dreadful down pour in a matter of seconds, the rain came down in sheets as I blindly stumbled about. As I brushed the water from my dripping face, I tripped over a large stone and tumbled face first into some squishy mud.

“Great…just great….” I grumble loudly, “…can’t I ever catch a break?!?” I yell out into the angry sky as I stand and shake my fist menacingly.

The heavens rumbled and flashed as if relishing in my frustration.

“AaaoooOOOooo.”

The closeness of the noise startled me and I ended up slipping and falling back into the squashy muck. Brushing the hair from my face, I beheld a most pitiful sight. Kai shivered as water dripped off her lean body, yes…her…I was close enough to tell. Whining softly she reached out and took my bag in her muzzle. Slowly walking backwards she began to drag my bag away from me. I was just about to protest when we locked eyes. Just by looking into those soft azure eyes I could tell that she wanted to help me. Casting my fears aside I put my trust in Kai as I staggered after my phantom like escort.

A few moments later, we came upon a large cave. Kai walked in and paused by the entry. I’m not sure why, but I hesitated.

Okay…I lied. I know exactly why I hesitated. First of all, I was about to walk into a large dark cave with an animal that had the potential to kill me. Second of all, what if this was Kai’s den and she only lured me here in order to feed on my flesh. I stood in the rain for a moment longer, letting the icy water chill me to the bones before I relented. At that point, I didn’t care if Kai was going to eat me or not, I just wanted to get out of that downpour.

Smearing some mud away from my nose, I took a deep breath and walked into the cave.

Okay...I've said this before. I'm soooooooooo sorry for not posting as often as I should. Things got crazy just after I got out of school. There was a death in the family last week and things have been topsie-turvie ever since. My muse left me and it took me some time to find her. But...I would like to thank you all for posting your feedback!! It's very uplifting to know how much my story is appreciated. I've mentioned this before, but your bumps really do inspire me to write more.

This part is a lil shorter than I thought it would be, but I wanted to leave it in a certain place. So I hope you like it. Before you all start yelling at me....Part IX is already written and ready to be posted...but that won't happen until after I read all the feedback for this part. ((Who knows...I might have to change a few things...))

Well enough babbling....here's PART VIII.

The next morning I woke to the steady sound of rain falling.

Great…it’s still raining. If this keeps up I’ll never make it to Sapphire Bay.

Rubbing my eyes with the backs of my hands I sat up and stretched. As I opened my eyes, the scene that I beheld was nothing like I expected. Kai was curled up like a dandelion puff at my feet, softly snoring into her velvety pelt. It was a serene sight to behold but it was nothing compared to what I observed just beyond the cave’s opening.

The sun glimmered through the forest’s thick roof sending small darts of warm light to the forest’s floor. However, there was still the matter of the rushing water. Tilting my head, I carefully stood up so as to not disturb Kai’s slumber and cautiously approached the mouth of the cave. The sound grew louder, the further I walked away from my temporary den. Glancing behind me, I noticed Kai yawning and stretching in the cave’s opening, however, I was still curious so I turned my back and continued to follow the curious sound of water falling.

Walking through a large section of low flowering bushes, I soon came upon a waterfall. I was standing on a ledge of some sort towards the top of the falls. The water tumbled over smooth black rocks and cascaded into a crystalline pool. The rushing water caused a sort of soft mist as each drop came crashing down to meet the waters surface, the spray shimmered slightly like a mobile rainbow as it dissipated in the warm air. The tallest part of the cliff was about five times my height but I noticed that there was a path of some sort that lead directly to the waters edge.

Tearing my eyes from the picture perfect scene, I looked down at my mud splattered gown and tangled lifeless hair in disgust.

“This just won’t do. How can I find my soul mate if I walk around like a muddy rodent.”

Lifting my nightgown up and over my head, I began to walk down the trail that leads to the waters edge.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

“Dammit Michael.” Max muttered under his breath. “I knew I shouldn’t have trusted you with my medallion.”

He and Michael had been searching the bushes for the last three hours and he was just about ready to strangle the life out of him.

“Any luck yet Max?” a disembodied voice sounded somewhere off to his left.

“No!” Max grumbled angrily swinging his large rusty knife with force. “I can’t believe I let you talk me into lending you my medallion.”

“Hey…it’s a great looking necklace, besides…I can’t help it if Maria gets a little over zealous when we’re together. She’s a real animal. Especially when she…”

“Michael…I’m not in the mood to hear about your wild sexcapades with Maria. Actually…strike that. I’m never in the mood to hear about them. Just concentrate on finding my necklace okay!”

“Ok ok…don’t get your britches in a bunch!”

“Michael…this is not a laughing matter. You know how important that necklace is to me!”

Oh no…Michael thought to himself. Here we go again…

“That medallion symbolizes the family that I once belonged to. That medallion is the only piece of family history that I have left. That medallion is the key that will unlock the mystery of my family’s disappearance. That medallion means more to me than you’ll ever know Michael.”

Max emphasized his displeasure by swinging his knife with such force that it whistled each time it cut into the forest’s lush greens.

Michael had lip synched Max’s entire tirade, but he could never bring himself to mimic the last line. He could feel Max’s passion for the trinket reverberate through his bones every time he mentioned its worth. Both Max and Michael were found wandering along the forest’s edge as children and were taken in by a woman who never had children of her own, but Max was the only one of the two who had a memento from his past. Michael never really had the urge to search for the family that he once had, they had left him, it wasn’t the other way around so why bother but it was different for Max. He hadn’t given up the search, but to this day hadn’t found any concrete leads.

“Listen…I know I should have been more careful with it. I’m sorry I lost it. I swear it’ll never happen again.”

Max popped out his head from some near by bushes startling Michael so badly that he fell over.

“By the gods!” Michael cried out, “Don’t do that. You nearly gave me a heart attack!”

“Good. I’m glad. Now stop daydreaming and keep looking. I think I’m gonna look by Rainbow Falls. Holler if you find it.”

“Will do.” Michael replied with a mock salute.

“Ha. Ha. Ha. Just keep looking will ya’.”

The fresh cool water felt like a million tiny fingers caressing my flesh. I sat in the shallow part of the pool for about half an hour simply scrubbing the filth from my skin before I decided to get out. Since I left my towel back at the den I decided to walk around until I got dry. It felt a little awkward walking around stark naked, but I figured that this was the beginning of my new life so I might as well enjoy this new type of freedom while I could. I mean…who knows when the next time an opportunity would present itself for me to walk around naked without anyone around.

As I surveyed the area, I remembered passing a small patch of wildflowers towards the top of the falls so I decided to stroll along the path until I reached the top.

“Well…this is me walking along a path….naked.” I said to myself.

“And this is me picking up a flower by the path…naked.”

“And this is me putting the flower in my hair, that I found by the path while walking around…naked.”

“I can’t believe I’m actually walking around NAKED!” I cried out joyfully. My sudden outburst startled several birds causing them to take to the air. Giggling aloud, I continued to skip up the path.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

“Now…I know the falls were around here somewhere. Come on Max think!”

Max had been wandering around for at least half an hour and he still couldn’t remember what part of the forest the falls were located in. He had just paused to wipe some sweat from his brow when the sound of beating wings caught his attention.

“Hmmm…I haven’t looked over there yet, might as well try.”

Max took off his tattered shirt and wrapped it around his head. He was just as determined to find the falls as he was in finding the medallion, but at the moment all he could think about was the cool crystal waters of Rainbow Falls.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

Max continued to swing his old rusty sword clearing a path ahead of him as the sound of rushing water got louder and louder.

“Finally…I thought I’d never get…”

Max’s jaw dropped to the ground when he spied the maiden at the top of the falls.

She was like no one he had seen before and the fact that she was naked made her even more appealing. Max felt his knees begin to wobble so he steadied himself by holding onto a nearby tree.

The maiden was sitting in a patch of wildflowers idly threading blooms into her long chocolate tresses. Although much of her taut bronzed skin was exposed, she seemed to have some modesty for she had strategically placed her hair so that she wasn’t completely indecent. The mist from the waterfall hung in the air around her causing her form to look soft and hazy as she hummed a tune softly to herself.

“Wake up Max. Wake up.” Max softly whispered to himself. “This can’t be real. It’s only the heat. You’ve been in the sun too long.”

Unable to tear his eyes from her, he slowly brought one of his hands to the opposite arm and gave himself a hard pinch.

“Ow!” He hissed as he looked down at the red mark on his own sun kissed skin. He gave his arm a quick kiss before snapping his head up to see if the maiden had heard him.

She hadn’t.

But, she did stand up and walked closer to the falls edge. She reached her arms high over her head and stretched. This simple gesture gave Max a brief view of just the bottom of the maiden’s firm round behind.

Max groaned softly to himself and bit into his fist.

“Come on Max. It’s just an illusion. A mirage. Probably just a water nymph teasing you.” Max murmured softly to himself.

Max hardly even noticed as he stood up and began to slowly walk towards this vision of perfection that stood before him. As he drew closer to her petite form, he thought he noticed the small beads of water on her skin and the fragrant blooms in her wavy hair perfumed the air.

Wait a second. Max thought to himself. Don’t mirages usually disappear as you draw nearer to them?

Unable to resist any longer Max reached out a hand to touch her on the shoulder.

“Max! I found it!” Michael cried as he came bursting through some nearby bushes.

Lizbeth spun around and gasped, she was so surprised that she took a step backwards and tottered on the edge of the falls. Max reached out and grabbed one of her flailing arms, but just as he secured his hold on her they both toppled over the edge.

“MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Michael screamed as he watched the two bodies tumble into the crashing water.

I would also like to say a special thanx to Gigo, Mango Maiden and Lattegirl for keeping my godmother and my family in their thoughts and prayers that simple gesture meant a lot. I would also like to thank those who continue to bump and leave feedback. :D

I've already started Part X...things get a lil more interesting and new characters are being introduced...well...I don't want to spoil it by saying too much...so without further ado...

Max clung to the soft warm body of his mystery maiden as they plummeted closer and closer to the watery depths of the Rainbow Falls pool. She shrieked into his ear the entire way down and he winced as he felt her nails claw into his back. He buried his face into her shoulder and awaited the inevitable fierce slap of cold water below them.

<center> ** SPLASH ** </center>

The force of their impact caused Max to release his hold on the woman, sending them flying into opposite directions. Max struggled against the pounding water and pumped his arms and legs fiercely trying to make his way back to the surface.

She was real…she isn’t an illusion…by the gods…I’ve found a goddess on earth and now I’ve killed her.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

Which way is up?!?! My mind screamed as I choked on the cool water.

The swirling water caused me to tumble head over heels and I was unable to distinguish up from down. I felt my lungs ache from the lack of oxygen as I trying to kick my way towards the surface. The harder I kicked, the farther away the surface seemed to be.

THIS ISN’T HAPPENING! I’m going to drown! This isn’t the way it was supposed to happen! I was supposed to get a second chance!

A dull pain crept throughout my body and the water seemed to muddle my movements. The world around me began to get dark as I felt my body slowly sink deeper into the pool.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

Max finally broke the surface and hungrily gulped a fresh lung full of air. Brushing the hair from his eyes he quickly scanned the water around him.

“MAX! Are you alright?” Michael cried out as he came splashing into the shallow end of the pool.

“Where is she? Did you see her?”

“What? No, I haven’t seen her? You mean she’s real?!?!” Michael asked incredulously.

“Yes she’s real! You gotta help me find her! You search that side of the pool and I’ll take this side.”

“Right.”

With that, Max dove back underneath the water and began his search for his mystery woman. The water began to cloud with bubbles the closer he swam towards the violently churning water at the base of the falls.

Come on...COME ON! Where is she! Please let her be alright!

Pumping his aching arms and legs harder than he had ever done before, Max glided down closer towards the pool’s sandy bottom. As his eyes scanned the murky depths he felt the familiar dull ache in his lungs as the oxygen slowly left them. Determined to find her Max paddled onwards.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

Just as Max was about to resurface to recharge his lungs with a fresh mouthful of air he spied her. Her petite form was laying peacefully on the pools sandy bottom and her hair swayed softly around her nude form creating a dark animate halo around her body as the waters currents brushed past her. Max propelled his body with such force that he was by his sleeping beauty’s side in an instant. Sweeping her limp body into his arms, he launched off the pool’s floor with a forceful kick and headed towards the glassy surface above them.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

“Max! Are you all right? Is she okay? Do you…” Michael cried out as he saw his best friend emerge from the water.

“Michael!” Max croaked out. “I just spent what seemed like an eternity underwater. It’s going to take me a moment to catch my breath and to assess the situation.”

“Right…right…here…let me help you.” Michael replied as he jogged through the water.

Michael lifted the limp maiden from Max’s arms and proceeded to move towards the sandy shore. Max bent over and grasped his knees as he struggled to regulate his breathing pattern. Michael carefully laid Lizbeth’s still form on the warm sand as Max slowly sloshed his way towards the shore.

“Ummmm...Max…how do we…uh…I mean…what do we…”

“Hand me your shirt.”

“What? Why?”

“Because it’s not as wet as mine is and I don’t feel comfortable with you staring at her naked body.”

“WHAT!?!? I’m not staring! Besides…what makes you think I was even looking?”

“Well…you did help me take her out of the water didn’t you?”

“Yes…”

“You did notice that she was naked didn’t you?”

“Maxwell…you know as well as I do that the girl is as naked as the day she was born.”

“Well Michael…a man can’t just notice that a girl is naked with out staring at her body. Right?”

“Why are we even discussing this? Shouldn’t we be helping her rather than discussing her nakedness?” Michael replied hotly as a slight stain of pink flushed his cheeks.

“Oh…right. Right.”

Max walked up to his now lifeless beauty and kneeled by her side. He tucked Michael’s shirt around her tan body and adjusted her body so she lay flat on the soft sand. He took one of her small hands in his, her skin still felt warm to the touch. There was still a chance that she was alive.

Leaning closer to her face, Max brought one of his ears close to her lips and listened. He felt her softly inhale and exhale against his skin. Her breath was faint but still present.

“She’s still alive.” Max muttered.

“Well then…what are we going to do now?” Michael replied squeezing the water from his soaking slacks as he paced uneasily by the waters edge.

“I said she’s alive, not conscious. We can’t just leave her here…naked…in the woods…all alone. She could be attacked by some wild beast, or thieves.”

“Well…what do you propose we do then?”

“Hold on…just...lemme think for a minute.”

Max turned his attention back towards the silent maiden and brushed some of her wet locks from her face.

She’s so beautiful. I’ve never seen a woman quite like her.

Cupping her cheek in one of his hands, Max slowly brought his face closer to the slumbering girl’s lips. As he drew nearer, he gently caressed her cheek with his thumb and twirled his fingers through her dark mane. He hovered over her face for a moment, simply enjoying the close proximity of her raspberry lips and smooth tan skin. Max inhaled her scent deeply, it was a mixture of the flowers that she still hand entwined within her silky strands and of the freshness of the cool water that clung to her skin. He was just about to kiss her on her tender lips when he noticed her ears.

“You’re an…”

Just before Max was able to finish his thought, she parted her lips softly and whimpered. Max was caught off guard and hesitated just long enough to see her eyes flutter open.

“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!” I shrieked at the top of my lungs. The last thing I remembered was fighting for my life against the waterfall’s tumultuous waters and now I open my eyes to come face to face with a stranger who had his mitts on me.

The man jumped away and stammered his apologies but all I could think of was getting away from his large hands. Scooting on my bottom I tried to create some distance between the handsome stranger and me but I didn’t get very far and soon bumped into the trunk of a large tree.

“Whoa…hold on a second…” another man off to my left sounded off to my left with his hands held up in a mock surrender.

“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!” I shrieked again as I stood jumped to my feet.

The shirt that had been placed on top of my body softly floated to the ground and I felt my face burn harshly with embarrassment. Looking down at the shirt on the floor, then up at the two men, and then back to the shirt, and back to my very exposed flesh I felt my face burn even hotter.

“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!” I shrieked for the third time as I clutched one arm over my breasts and the other wrapped around my lower half. I turned on my heel and tore into the bushes.

“Hey! Wait…don’t be…” the handsome man called out towards my retreating figure but I kept running.

“Wait!! Hold on!!” Max cried out as he stumbled into the undergrowth.

“GGGGggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…” replied a ferocious noise off to his right.

Max halted in his tracks and slowly turned his head as he searched out the source of the menacing sound.

A white wolf slowly stalked out of an emerald bush gnashing its pearly white teeth while it growled threateningly. Its ears were pinned back to its head and it slowly began to creep closer to Max.

“Whoa…easy there…I’m not after you…I just want to find out where the girl went.” Max softly replied as he took another cautious step in the direction in which his mystery girl had fled.

The wolf took a large sudden step forward and nicked one of Max’s legs with one of its razor sharp teeth.

“Max…”Michael called out from behind. “I think that the wolf belongs to the girl and that she doesn’t want to be found right now.”

“As crazy as that sounds Michael…I think you might be right.” Max replied taking a wary step backwards.

The wolf held its grounds snapping its teeth while it snarled. It took one slow step forward for every slow step backward Max took. As soon as Max was back by the waters edge and back by Michael’s side, the wolf turned tail and took off back into the bushes.

The two men stood like rigid statues by the waters edge for a while before the silence between them was broken.

“She was beautiful…wasn’t she.”

“Who? The wolf?”

“No you dolt! The girl!”

“More like gorgeous.”

“I wonder who she was.”

“I have no idea Max, but do me a favor will ya'.”

“Sure…what’s that?”

“Don’t tell Maria that I spent the day saving a naked woman in the woods. She’d kill me!”

“No she wouldn’t.” Max chuckled aloud.

“Believe you me Maxwell, you don’t want to be on the hurting side of Maria’s wrath when she unleashes it.” Michael replied with a grimace.

“Sounds like you talk from experience Mikie boy.”

“You don’t even know the half of it.” Michael replied tossing the golden chain back to his friend.

“Okay…I won’t…but only if I get to hear the story about your encounter with Maria’s fury.” Max replied jokingly as he secured the small charm back around his neck.

“Dammit…I knew I shouldn’t have mentioned it in the first place!”

Max laughed heartily as clapped Michael hard on the back.

“A deals a deal man. Come on…’fess up.”

Michael groaned audibly as he bent down to pick up his slightly moist shirt and tossed it into the clear water.

“Hey. What did you do that for? I lent that shirt to you last week?”

“I didn’t want to bring any incriminating evidence home. Maria has the nose of a wolf, she’d be able to tell that another girl’s flesh touched it and I’d be in major trouble. Besides…I’ll buy you a new one.”

“You bet your ass you will…now…back to the story…”

“AwwwWWWwww…do I have to?”

Max laughed jovially as he wrapped one of his arms around his friend’s shoulder. He glanced one last time into the lush green brush and sighed heavily as they began their long walk home.

“Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god.” I muttered over and over again as I rocked slowly on the cold floor of the cave. I still couldn’t believe that just happened!

I ran around the woods for a good ten minutes, taking twists and turns just incase I was being followed, but luckily I wasn’t. I returned to the den completely winded and collapsed on top of my make shift nest where I cried my eyes out.

How embarrassing! I can’t believe that not one…but TWO men have already seen me naked. I feel so ashamed.

I feel my cheeks begin to burn as I think back to what transpired only minutes ago. Sniffling softly, I slowly stand and begin to dress myself in a long nightgown that covers me from the neck down. Kai returned a few moments ago and has been watching me as I wept into my small pillow. She tilts her head and whines softly as I sit back down on the cold floor clutching my now moist cushion to my chest. Scooting her body along the cave’s floor, Kai gradually inched her way closer to me as I peered at her from over the top of my pillow. She rested her head on my knee and softly nuzzled my hand with her wet nose.

Drained from crying, I decided that it would be best to wait until tomorrow to complete my journey to Sapphire Bay. Hell…it had already taken me nearly two weeks to travel as far as I had. What was another day? Settling down into Kai’s warm fur, I allowed myself to slip into a deep sleep.

Princess Lizbeth Allegra Delicia Aurelia Dove Emilia Sabine Iris Pearl Ruby Albinia Maryrose…you’ve been sitting in this blasted bush for nearly an hour…now march out there and get your nightgown!

I had been repeating this phrase in my head every five minutes and yet I still hadn’t the courage to leave the safety of the brush. Peering through the lush green leaves for about the hundredth time that day, I looked at my nightgown laying harmlessly on the soft sand by the waters edge.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME!?! They’ve obviously left…they’re not lurking in the trees and bushes…they didn’t follow me when I ran off yesterday…sure you can’t get that man’s gorgeous eyes out of your head… but…there is no reason to be afraid! I just have to stand up and go…get…my…nightgown!

I nodded my head as if agreeing to my own thoughts and stood up.

I stood there…rooted in place by my own fear. My knees began to tremble and I fell back into my hiding place.

Frustrated with the situation, I let a few angry tears slip down my cheeks as the memories of yesterday’s events came rushing back to me. I hated this helpless feeling that clutched at my heart and stomach. I hated the way it made me feel, both angry and terrified at the same time. I had to get past this, and the only way that would ever happen is if I faced my fears and retrieved my nightgown. Kai softly whimpered and licked my knee; it was as if she understood my trepidations and was willing me to go on.

Fueled by a new desire to overcome my fear I jumped to my feet and stomped through the bushes. I was focused on one thing alone, reclaiming my nightgown. The closer I came to the inanimate thing, the quicker my movements became. Before I knew it, I was sprinting full speed towards it. I plucked the damp garment off of the warm sands and whipped it over my head like a lasso; tilting my head skyward I howled out a victorious yell.

My heart thundered in my chest as I relished the feeling of overpowering my fear. I was no longer afraid; from this moment on I will no longer let foolish emotions get the best of me.

* Snap *

* Crack *

A twig somewhere in the trees broke and tumbled down from the sky falling harmlessly into the brush.

I was back in my hiding place before it even hit the ground.

* Sigh *

Oh well.

“Max? Max…snap outta it! It’s your move.” Michael sang out as he snapped his fingers in front of Max’s face.

“Huh? What? Oh…sorry.” Max replied as he returned his focus to the blue and white checked game board. He hadn’t been able to focus lately with the visions of his mysterious beauty still swimming in his mind.

“Where are you?”

“What do you mean where am I? I’m right here.” Max mumbled as he lifted one glass and moved it to an empty square.

“No you’re not.” Michael sighed as he lifted another glass and hopped over several of Max’s pieces. “The Max I know wouldn’t have made that dumb move costing him several of his pieces. Now king me.”

Sighing heavily, Max picked up five of the glasses and downed each one in a matter of seconds and tossed a cherry into Michael’s glass before resting his chin back on his open palm.

“Come on Max…what gives?” Michael looked from his left and then to his right before leaning forward and continuing in a whisper. “It’s her isn’t it?”

Michael actually already knew the answer to his question; the change in his friend’s demeanor was answer enough. It had only been less than 24 hours ago when he and Max came upon the mystery woman at Rainbow Falls, and that brief encounter had sent Max over the edge. For the rest of last night and all day today, Max had been acting strangely. He would constantly lose his train of thought while he was talking, would stare off into oblivion for hours and just this morning he walked right into his own horse. Max had it bad.

“I just can’t seem to get her soft skin and pouty lips out of my head. The mere memory of her plagues my mind constantly. I have to see her again Mikie…I just gotta.”

“And how, pray tell, do you plan on finding her?”

”I don’t know…”Max replied softly, “but I will find her. Some how.”

Exhaling an exaggerated sigh, Michael rubbed his head and winced.

“You got it bad Max. She’s even ruined your game.”

“Huh?” Max replied quizzically.

“The board Max. Look at the board.”

Max lowered his eyes once again to the blue and white game board. Michael was right. She had ruined his gaming strategies. He had but one lone glass still on the board amongst a sea of Michael’s glasses. Chuckling softly to himself Max raised his final shot glass and drank its contents.

“What do you say we play another round?” He smiled merrily as he began to replace his pieces into their starting positions.

“I dunno…”Michael replied as he followed suit and rearranged his own pieces, “I whipped yer butt once and I can do it again. Do you think you could stand the blow of another swift spanking Maxwell?”

“oOo…it’s like that huh? You may have already beaten me once, but that was a freebie…I was distracted. It’s not gonna be an easy game now. Yer goin’ down Mikie boy!” Max retorted as he began to fill his glasses with a white wine and Michael’s with blue-ish green ale.

“Yer on!”

It was about an hour before sunset when I had arrived at the edge of Sapphire Bay. Since I hadn’t bathed since the day before, I decided to wait until the following day to make my first appearance in town.

Briefly glancing down the road that led to the town, I turned my back on the little town for the night and headed down towards the beach.

Sapphire Bay lay slightly inland from the closest beach, which according to my map was named Sapphire Sands. Tucking my well-creased map back into my pocket, I slowly shuffled down the long windy trail that led to the silky sands of the beach below.

Half way down the path, I untied the ribbon that had kept my long dark hair in a tightly confined bun for the last eight hours and allowed the gentle sea breeze to caress my tresses and unwind it. Inhaling the salty sea air, I closed my eyes and allowed my mind to wander back to what had happened the day before.

…those strong bronze arms…

…his dark tousled hair…

…his moistened pinkish beige lips…

…his large soul piercing eyes…

His beauty alone almost made me forget that he had tried to manhandle me while I was unconscious. Almost…but not quite.

Pushing that unpleasant snippet of information from my mind, I sighed contentedly and opened my eyes.

Kai was frolicking by the waters edge about one hundred yards to my left. She’d chase after the ebbing foam as the water rushed back into the ocean and turned tail as the blue-green waves chased her back onto the beach’s silky sands.

I couldn’t help but giggle aloud at her antics. It was hard to believe that only days before, the mere sight of Kai sent an icy feeling of dread running through my veins and now, I just wanted to hug her and run my fingers through her velvety soft pelt.

It was at that exact moment that I decided to forget about my past and my future. From this day forth, I would live only for the now. Dropping my bag onto the sands, I took off and raced towards the enticing turquoise sea.

* HICCUP *

“oOowww! That one hurt.” Max mumbled to himself while rubbing his bare chest. He couldn't quite remember how he ended up without his shirt on, but at that point...it didn't really matter.

He had spent the last couple of hours lying on his back trying to sober up before he returned home. He was supposed to walk it off, but after tripping over his own feet so many times Max crawled to a soft patch of grass and decided that lying on the floor was just as good as walking. He still hadn’t completely figured out how Michael won those last five games, but there was one thing that he was certain of. He’d never let that happen again! Michael finally called it quits right before sunset. He claimed that he had to meet Maria at the Sea Dragon, a local tavern, at sun down but Max was pretty certain that he halted their game in order to give him some time to walk off all the alcohol he had consumed.

Oh well. I guess you can’t win them all! Max thought to himself.

“If there was one thing I’d want…I’d want her.” Max muttered under his breath.

Underneath it all, Max knew the real reason why he couldn’t concentrate on the game. His mind kept wandering back to “her.” Max had never felt this way about anyone before. He found it completely intriguing how the simple memory of her doe like eyes caused his heart to flutter like a bunch of butterflies. Closing his eyes, Max began to dream about what had happened the day before.

<center>«·´¨*·.¸¸.* *.¸¸.·*¨`·»</center>

…The fragrant blooms in her hair…

…the small droplets of water that clung to her sun-kissed body…

…her rosy pink cheeks…

…her petal-soft skin…

…the sound of the rushing water…

…the coolness of the pool…

…the sight of her naked body laying in his arms…

Max softly moaned aloud as his dream-self bent closer to kiss his mystery woman. It was at that time when the whole world of his imagination began to swirl around as if it were being sucked down a whirlpool. It spun faster and faster until all the blues and greens blended together creating a black vortex within his mind’s eye. His dream-self stood and wobbled around the revolving dream world as he tried to make sense of what was happening.

Max’s head thrashed from side to side as he lay on the cool grass. Still wrapped up in his dream, Max grabbed his head as he tried to stop the spinning. Max’s dream-self dropped to his knees and began to scream. His bellowing seemed to cause the spin-cycle to drop in speed and the world slowly came back into focus. However, it wasn’t the same place that he had once been. Max was no longer staring at the naked form of his un-named beauty; he was now standing in a large dimly lit hall.

Off in the shadows of another room, Max could hear the sounds of goblets clinking and people laughing. Curious, Max found himself walking down the hallway searching for the location of the party. As he traversed down the hallway he noticed the strange decorations on the walls. There are several mounted animal heads, yet they are unlike any he had seen before. Instead of looking like proud and noble beasts, the animals had looks of terror and fear forever frozen on their faces. Their eyes were wide and their teeth were bared, Max disgustedly tore his eyes from the disturbing scene and continued to walk down the hallway.

It wasn’t long before he reached a large room bursting with different sounds and smells. Unsure whether to walk in, Max cracked the door and peered inside. The room appeared to be a large dining area, there were large tables covered with large goblets brimming with wine and large platters full of food. The chairs seemed to be made of animal bones and each seat was covered with a different pelt. Max felt himself shudder as his eyes surveyed the scene of two large vicious looking dogs tearing apart large hunks of bloody meat.

The members of the feast were just as intimidating as the dogs were. Each of the men seemed to have bulging muscles and long dark scruffy hair. The women, who were slightly less muscled than the men, were strangely beautiful. It was something about their eyes that fascinated him. Something deadly lurked behind the mysterious beauty of their almond-shaped eyes. Max was forced to tear his gaze from a voluptuous looking red head as a booming laughter reached his ears.

Max felt his body being lifted from the ground as he hurtled through the air and crashed through the door that he was hiding behind.

His head ached with pain.

The world went black.

Screams of pain and fury pierced the air.

Things came crashing down around him.

Unbearable heat.

Searing pain.

Then everything turned red.
