Author's note...first my beloved beta Darkmoon is a bit overwhelmed in rl and is taking a month off from writing ect, so I am taking the month off also to give her a break from betaing. I will be writing while she is away, and as soon as she is back I will be too. I do have the next chapter almost complete, rl sucks here too, and she has agreed to do it is I finish it before the weekend. Which I am attempting to do. Quickly.

Chapter 15
Beth grabbed the edge of the cool, smooth table in front of her, cautious of the body resting on it. Her legs trembled as she used it to help her stand. She called Josef, so Liz would be safe. He and Mick wouldn’t let anything happen to her. Beth stopped in front of the body she’d been trying to get a glimpse of before Max and Michael had shown up. Her hand hovered over the sheet, what ever was under there it was something dangerous; something important enough that two men in hiding were willing to sneak into a hospital, an area surrounded by cops, officials and other government agencies, to see.
She flipped open her phone again, ready to take a picture of whatever she saw, no matter what it was and flipped back the sheet. She had been expecting something different…something more horrific, more than a glowing hand print. Not that is wasn’t fascinating and obliviously alien in origins…but still she felt a bit let down.
For a moment she wondered what that said about her, if she’d been a reported for to long and if this meant she was already desensitized. Her involvement with Mick had certainly had a hand in that. Beth shook off her thoughts; this was neither the time nor the place and quickly snapped a few pictures of the person currently listed as a John Doe. She snapped a close up of his face, several of the hand print, two of his tattoo and of the odd shaped scar he had. If his choice of tattoos and hair style were any indication, this man was former military/government, and wouldn’t be a John Doe much longer.
Beth forwarded the pictures to one of Josef’s private accounts and quickly deleted them. She had an odd feeling, and she didn’t want to be caught with them on her. After pocketing her phone and a deep breath, Beth opened the door and walked out into the hall. It was quiet. One corner, than another, she peered around the last that lead out into the larger part of the coroner’s office, a place she could easily excuse being and let relief wash over her. She was almost home free.
And as soon as she finished that thought a hand touched her shoulder. She squeaked, jumped and turned her fist ready only to see an equally startled Ben standing in front of her.
“Beth?” Ben had stepped back quickly, to avoid being hit. “Are you alright?”
“Um,” Beth’s voice shook, as she launched herself at him, wrapping her arms around him and sighing against his shoulder.
Even more startled than before Ben gently rubbed her back. “Bad Day?”
Her laugh sounded off even to her ears, “Yeah, you could say that.” She started to move away, her embarrassment obvious.
Ben smiled warmly, “Want to talk about it?” She loved how he didn’t out right ask what was happening, she loved that he immediately offered to listen instead of demanding to know. In that second, Beth realized how easily she could fall in love with him.
“Not right now, but maybe tomorrow?” It wasn’t her story to share after all.
“Lunch?”
It was her turn to smile, “Only if you take the rest of the afternoon off.” As she laughed lightly, Ben’s gaze heated up.
“I think I can manage that.” He leaned forward and kissed her chastely.
She straightened his tie, brushed out a wrinkle on the shoulder of his suit and leaned forward to whisper in his ear. “I’ll bring my appetite.”
The drive to his house was awkward to say the least, what with Mick giving him the evil eye in the rear view mirror as he drove while the look Liz was sending his way made him want to pull over and have another go at her. No matter the cost or the resulting guilt.
Once in the parking area, Mick helped Liz out of the car and hovered at her side like a good puppy. Josef wanted to laugh, yes she was weary but she wasn’t made of porcelain and if Mick couldn’t see that well… Josef restrained himself though; somehow he didn’t think Mick could handle it if he didn’t.
In the elevator, Liz looked at him again; her eyes hot, and focused on his mouth. He smiled, deliberately slow and wicked, pleased when she licked her lips nervously. He felt hyper aware of her and everything she was doing. Her blood in his veins was like fire, he felt stronger, faster, and more alive than he had since his death.
It was as if Mick weren’t even in the room, her presence consumed him so completely. But Mick was, and he was hovering at Liz’s elbow, being solicitous, gallant, every inch the white knight he desperately desired to be.
Josef watched Liz, watched her looking at Mick the same way she’d looked at him and wondered if the little minx knew she was playing with fire. He didn’t think she was callus enough or stupid enough for that matter, to try and play them against each other. That wasn’t her, she was different.
The elevator dinged, and the door slid open to revel his penthouse door halfway down the hall. He stepped out and knew something was wrong. The scent of an unfamiliar Vampire trilled through his senses; someone old, older than him possibly. Josef glanced back at Mick, and with a brief nod they agreed he would stay there with Liz.
Josef stalked forward, kicked open his door and found the intruder calming sitting on his couch sipping blood from a leaded crystal goblet.
“Ah, Josef, it is good you have returned. Have your friends join us. There is something we needs discuss.”
Bemused by the demand Josef walked further into his living room. “Please, make yourself at home.” He gestured widely with his hands. “Would you like a drink? Oh wait, you have one already.”
“Your sarcasm amuses me, child. There is no need for it here. I am here for curiosities’ sake only. Now bring me the young one and the human. I must see the vampire the brought about my daughter’s destruction.”

Chapter 16
Josef walked backwards to the door, his eyes never leaving the unknown vampire sitting comfortably on his couch. The older vampire’s handcrafted leather shoes caused him a momentary fit of lust, but he quickly overcame it and stepped out into his hallway.
“Mick, apparently my company is for you? Who would have thought?”
Mick leaned his head out of the elevator, “For me?”
“Yes and he wants you and Liz to come inside. Oh, and it wasn’t a request.”
Mick frowned and looked down at Liz. She smiled at him and stepped out of the elevator leaving him wondering if he would ever be able to predict her actions. She was so damn frustrating. Frowning he followed her then stepped between her and the door. “Stay behind us.” He murmured in her ear.
Liz shook her head and smiled. “He isn’t going to hurt us.” She laid a hand on his shoulder, smiled at Josef and slipped around them both leaving them no choice but to follow her.
She stopped just inside the door, her face alight with joy. She could feel this Vampire in a way she couldn’t Mick and Josef. He was old. Maybe the oldest of his kind, he was vicious, graceful and utterly amazing. She moved closer, slowly and curtsied. He chuckled, stood and caressed her hair.
“Such a lovely greeting, child, such manners and grace in a human even.” He took her hand and raised her to her feet leaning in close to inhale her scent. “But you are not truly a human are you, my dear.”
Liz could feel Josef and Mick standing at her back, she could sense there fear and confusion. “No, My Lord, I am not.”
“My Lord?” He asked casually, once again in the amused tone. “How is it you know what those standing behind you do not?” He stroked her cheek gently as he asked.
“I just do, My Lord.”
He smiled a true smile and let go of her hand. “Please, child, call me Hugh,” He looked at Josef and Mick, “but you two may call me sir.” He returned to his seat on the couch and gestured for Liz to sit with him. She hesitated then followed.
“This is all highly amusing but who the hell are you?” Josef was very unhappy. He was leaving miffed and well into pissed as hell, but he also knew there was no way he could take the vampire that had invaded his home. Even with Mick’s help.
Hugh looked at Mick, “I am Coraline’s father.”
“Her father?” Josef and Mick asked as one.
Hugh frowned, “Her sire if you prefer.”
“Yes, but that still doesn’t answer who you are.” Josef snapped.
“Josef.” Hugh chided. “I had forgotten how impetuous the young are.” He looked over at Liz, “My dear, would you mind filling my glass.”
“Not at all.” Liz looked at Mick and Josef, her eyes hard before looking back at Hugh with a mischievous smile covering her face. “How long would you like me to be in the other room eavesdropping?”
“Liz!” Mick sounded horrified, whereas Josef sounded proud.
Laughter spilled from Hugh’s lips, a dry deep laugh that he was obliviously unused to using. “You, my dear, are a treasure and if these two younglings ever are foolish enough to let you go, you are welcome in my house.” He patted her hand fondly. “I do adore a young woman with a sharp mind and a witty tongue. You may stay.”
He turned his gaze on Josef and Mick, “You may sit also.” He waited until they had taken seat on the opposite couch and continued. “I am the man history refers to as Hugh Capet. Coraline was one of many, and the last, that I have fathered over the ages. Always descendants. She broke faith with the convent by ‘siring’ you without consent, from myself and you.” Hugh frowned.
“What…” Mick hesitated.
“She lives, but is currently bound. Her punishment will last one hundred years. I am loathed to destroy her. She is, as a human would say, the baby of the family. Or was.” Hugh looked at Josef and Liz. “I see she did not hold your heart the way you hold hers. That is regrettable but no matter. I have seen what I need to see and there is another human approaching so my time here is at an end.” He stood, offered Liz his hand and helped her stand also. “My dear, it has been an unexpected pleasure.” He brought her hand to his lips and kissed it.
Hugh turned toward the balcony, paused and pulled a card from a gilded case then handed it to Liz. “Should you ever have need, call this number.” He then turned, walked through the balcony doors and leapt over the edge.
Liz ran to the balcony and looked over the side, not that she expected to see anyone but…she laughed and turned to face Mick and Josef. “That was history. In this room. He was the founder of the Capitan Dynasty, half of the royalty in Spain and France carry that man’s blood in their veins.”
Josef walked over to her, took the card from her hand and looked at it. He turned it over but the thick, heavy cream colored card reveled nothing but a single country code and a phone number. He handed it to Mick who glanced at it before handing back to Liz. Josef tuned to Mick, frowned again and walked back into his living room. He could hear Beth walking down the hall, and as odd as this had all been, they really did have pressing matters, such as why did Beth smell like death and terror, Liz’s powers and why Hugh had looked at both he and Liz when speaking of Mick’s heart being taken.

Hi Everyone!!
This is actually Darkmoon! Burningchaos asked me to leave this little Author's Note letting you know what's going on. She just moved, and because of that move, needed to get a phone line and internet into the new house. Magically AT&T has gotten lost for the past 2 weeks trying to get to said house. *Grrrr* So she is without internet at this time. She will be back soon, because come Wed if she doesn't have internet or phone she's raising holy hell with AT&T. I let her know that you all miss her. And she misses you all too!
Thanks!
Darkmoon
