Re: Full Circle (UC,Mi/L,MATURE) Chap 30 31/12

Post by polar4eva »

Wednesday morning very early was filled with a cool mist. The group had piled into three cars. Isabel and Max rode with their parents in Max’s Jeep. Tess rode with Kyle and Jim in the Mustang. Liz rode with Alex and Maria in the Jetta and Michael brought up the rear on his motorbike.

They approached the Granolith chamber and slowed to a halt. Diane and Philip had never ventured into this part of the desert. They were glued to the sides of their children as the entire group walked at a funeral pace to the chamber.

An audible gasp was heard after Max waved his hand over the unseen hand print. He gave his mother a small smile as he placed his hand onto the silver print and the rock wall opened to reveal a secret chamber. Everyone filtered in with Michael once again bringing up the rear. As he stepped into the chamber he allowed himself once last glance at his motorbike. The bike symbolised the freedom he had finally found on Earth. He hoped that there was a similar mode of transportation on Antar.

Liz allowed Michael his moment of sorrow and waited for him just inside the entrance. Michael walked inside and immediately took Liz by the hand and led her into the inner chamber.

They entered to find Diane and Philip staring at the Granolith in awe. Diane placed a tentative hand against the smooth glowing surface. An amazed smile flickered across her lips.

“It’s beautiful.” She whispered.
“Yeah.” Philip nodded in agreement. “What is it?”
“We don’t really know.” Isabel spoke in a thick voice. “The only one with memories of it is Liz.”

The group instinctively turned to the petit brunette.

“The Granolith is a living entity.” Liz explained. “It allows us to connect with each other and access our powers to their fullest potential. We don’t know where it came from or how it came to be with the Royal Four. It is tended to by priests and worshipped. It is the religion of Antar.”
“But they sent it with you.” Philip queried.
“Yes they did.” Liz nodded. “I am fairly certain that they sent it with us to ensure that we were protected and to help us connect with one another. Ensuring out return.”
“That must have been a tough decision to make.” Kyle mused. “Sending the proof and centrepiece of your religion billions of miles away without the guarantee that it would be returned.”
“Better lost than in the hands of the enemy.” Michael added.
“It’s time.” Liz stated firmly.

All activity stopped.

Maria ran to Liz and pulled her best friend into a smothering hug. The tears that she had been holding back now spilled onto Liz’s shoulders.

Max was pulled into his mother’s arms who sobbed into his chest. Philip stood beside him and wrapped an arm around Max’s shoulders and used his free arm to comfort his wife.

Isabel turned to her other brother and fell against his chest. She wept into his Metallica t-shirt as Michael struggled to maintain his composure.

Tess was being embraced by Kyle and Jim as she cried. She had never expected to feel this way. Going home was always her goal. The last thing she thought she was going to feel was reluctant to leave.

Jim stepped away from Tess and walked over to Michael. He had grown very fond of Michael and had a deep respect for the serious young man. Jim placed a hand on Michael’s shoulder and both men stepped into the outer cave.

“I just wanted to…” Jim started.
“It’s ok.” Michael interrupted. “Thank you for everything you…”
“No.” Jim cut Michael off. “Let me talk. I am very proud of you. I am proud of the man you have become. I have never had more respect for another man.”
“Jim.” Michael shifted awkwardly.
“I know that you put others above yourself.” Jim continued. “But promise me that you will take care of yourself. Or at the very least let the others take care of you.”
“I promise.” Michael muttered embarrassed.
“Good.” Jim nodded unsure of what to do next. He just knew that he would regret not speaking to Michael before he left.
“I want to thank you for everything you have done for us.” Michael stuttered. “For me. You’re the closest thing I have ever had to a…”

Jim nodded before pulling Michael into an emotional hug.

“We’re ready.” Liz’s voice rang out amongst the sobs and stifled tears.

Jim and Michael rejoined the group with red cheeks and reddened eyes. They entered to see Liz crouched down at the base of the Granolith. A hidden panel was opened in the base and Liz’s hand was pressed against another silver hand print. She stood up and stepped away from the now silver Granolith.

“We have thirty seconds.” Liz announced.

Happy New Year
*****************************************
Jim stepped forward and began shepherding the others out of the inner chamber. With great sorrow Isabel strengthened her resolve and pulled her mother and father away from her brother.

From the outer chamber the remaining group watched as Liz, Max, Michael and Tess were sucked into the Granolith. The Royal Four were visible within the swirling blue colours. Michael’s palm was flat against the glass as he was animatedly trying to get the others to leave the cave.

With a nod Jim pushed the others towards the exit and away from the rock formation. The group turned to see the large boulders shake apart. Bright, blinding light was pouring from the centre. The air around the Granolith vibrated with energy. The ground shook as the Granolith produced the enormous amount of energy required to break away from the ground and shoot off into space.

Like a roman candle, the Granolith screamed into the sky. A bright plume of smoke engulfed the area around where the rock formation had once stood. After the air cleared all that was visible of their four friends was a small silvery dot in the sky.

That steadily became smaller. Until it disappeared.

Diane turned to her remaining child and grabbed onto her arm. Isabel could barely see her mother through her tears as both women collapsed onto the desert floor. Jim looked across to Philip as both men struggled to not breakdown. Kyle and Alex were comforting Maria who was sobbing.

Jim stepped over to Philip and placed a friendly and comforting hand on the taller man’s shoulder. Both of them wanted to remain strong for the others but were struggling. Kyle walked over to his father and pulled him into a strong hug.

“I love you, dad.” Kyle muttered in a thick voice.
“I love you, son.” Jim was hoarse.

Philip looked onto the scene before him with sadness. The only time he had been that close to his own son was in the past five days. It hadn’t been enough. There hadn’t been enough time.

Alex held Maria tightly to his chest and tried to offer any comfort he could. Despite his own sorrow he looked around the group to make sure that everyone else was as ok as they could be. He saw the way Kyle was hugging his father knowing how much they were going to miss Tess.

The weeping pair of Isabel and Diane broke his heart but he knew that no-one could comfort the two women. But when he looked over to Philip it seemed as though the world slowed down. Philip’s face crumpled and his knees buckled as he fell to the ground. An almost inhuman noise emitted from his throat as he broke. It was seeing Philip’s pain at losing his son that caused Alex to succumb to his own sadness.

It took a full hour for the group to regain any semblance of composure. The group piled into the cars and returned to Roswell.

They should have been unsurprised to find Jeff and Nancy Parker at the Evans’ home. But given their current state of despair they were all lost for words when confronted by two irate parents waving a letter.

After Kyle convinced everyone to go indoors the shouting and accusations started.

“I want to know where my daughter is and I want to know now.” Jeff thundered.
“We don’t know.” Diane stuttered.
“Liz and Michael ran away together.” Jim stated. “Max and Tess have gone with them.”
“What?” Nancy gasped. She immediately turned to Diane and took her hand.
“Liz and Michael?” Jeff’s brow creased. “What did that happen?”
“It’s been ongoing for a while.” Maria’s voice was still thick with tears.
“What does the letter say?” Alex asked.
“Not much.” Jeff grunted. He passed the letter to Philip and sat down heavily on the couch next to his wife.

Philip opened the letter and read Liz’s neat and cursive handwriting out loud.

Dad and Mum,

I hope that you can find some measure of comfort in this letter by at least knowing that I am ok. Actually I am better than ok. I am safe and protected and loved. I cannot stay in Roswell for reasons that are too numerous to list in this letter.

I am not alone. Michael is with me. He and I are to be married.

I am sorry to cause you any undue pain or confusion but I have to leave. Michael will protect me and you never have to worry about me.

I love you both very much.

Love always,

Elizabeth.

Jeff looked chocked up as he sat listening to Philip.

“If Max has gone with them you must know where he is.” Jeff pleaded.
“We don’t.” Diane cried.
“Did you get a letter from Max?” Jeff asked.
“Yes.” Isabel nodded surprising the others in the room. She rose from the sofa and out of the room. Returning a few moments later. Only Kyle noticed that she waved her hands over the piece of paper. She handed the piece of paper to Nancy and Jeff who read aloud.

Dear Izzy,

I know that you never approved of my relationship with Tess. But I love her. We are leaving to start afresh somewhere new.

I know that you won’t understand why we need to leave but please know that I love you and Mum and Dad. Take care of each other.

Love

Max.

Philip looked over at Isabel in confusion. He saw the letter and recognised his son’s handwriting. Philip glanced around the room before making eye contact with Kyle who wiggled his fingers slightly. Philip gave him a small nod of understanding.

“I don’t understand.” Diane whispered into Philip’s ear.
“Isabel used her powers to create the note for Jeff and Nancy.” Philip whispered back.

They looked over to see Jeff pulling Nancy against his chest and sighing into her hair.

“We were told that we were never going to be able to have children.” Jeff stated softly. “Lizzie was our miracle. An old Indian guide told us that we should never underestimate the power of the desert. That that would be the place we would finally make our baby…”
“He was right.” Nancy sobbed.
“If you know where she is you have to tell us.” Jeff demanded.
“We don’t.” Jim stated. “We, Kyle and I, lost Tess too. If any of us hear from them we will let you know.”
“What about Michael?” Jeff asked. “He’s a good kid. Although I could kill him for this. Who can we talk to? Does he have family?”
“No.” Isabel stated sadly.
“He has Diane and me.” Philip replied. “We used to look out for him as much as he would let us. Other than us he has no-one.”
“He has Lizzie.” Maria smiled tremulously.
“She’s his family now.” Alex smiled.

Jeff and Nancy were aware that they had missed something from the bright eyes and smiles around the room. It had suddenly become less tense and more optimistic.

Michael opened his eyes slowly. He tried to clear his vision by blinking slowly. It took him a few moments to realise that his eye sight wasn’t blurry. Squinting he sat up slowly and cautiously. He tried to sense if there were any potential threats nearby. His powers didn’t pool to his palms so he took it as a good sign.

Michael looked around and was relieved to spot Liz, Max and Tess lying around the room. Michael crawled over to his wife’s prostrate body after discovering that he was light headed and therefore unable to stand.

He pulled Liz into his arms and gently caressed her face until her eyelids fluttered open.

“No there is nothing wrong with your eyesight.” Michael soothed her with a small chuckle. “The room is just really bright.”
“Good. Thanks.” Liz muttered with a grin.

She sat up and had a squint around the bright room. She saw Tess and Max still unconscious a few feet away. A relieved sigh escaped her lips as she snuggled against Michael.

“I’m dizzy.” Liz commented.
“Me too.” Michael replied with a soothing voice as he placed a kiss on her crown. “I think, now this is just a guess, that it could have something to do with being hurtled through billions of miles of space in a glass jar.”
“You think?” Liz joked with a serious face.

Michael smiled and kissed her gently.

“Should we not make sure the others are ok?” Liz questioned softly.
“Yeah.” Michael shrugged but made no attempt to move.

Liz giggled and wriggled out of Michael’s arms and crawled over to Tess’ unconscious body. Michael crawled over to Max and the two conscious people attempted to revive the unconscious ones.

It took a few moments for Max and Tess to be roused. Tess panicked slightly as she sat bolt upright. After a beat she was back on the ground groaning and moaning about nausea. Max witnessed Tess’ actions and wisely chose to remain on the ground.

“Where are we?” Max asked Michael.
“No idea.” Michael replied not taking his eyes off of Tess and Liz.
“Shouldn’t we find out?” Max prodded.
“You want to give yourself a minute before you stand up.” Michael looked down at Max. “Then we will try and get Tess up. After that we will find out where we are. Ok?”
“Sure.” Max was surprised by his friends’ rationality.
“Where is the Granolith?” Tess wondered with panic.
“Oh my God.” Max cried as he leapt to his feet.
“Relax.” Liz interjected. “We’re still in it.”
“Huh?” Max swayed until Michael caught him.
“We’re still in it.” Liz repeated.
“We shrunk?” Tess asked timidly.

The look on her face was scared, confused and bewildered. It was the funniest thing that Liz had ever seen. She burst out laughing. The others looked at her as if she had lost her mind. It took her a while to calm down. When she was finally able to see clearly she saw Michael staring down at her with a look of confusion and adoration.

“No Tess.” Liz giggled. “We didn’t shrink. The Granolith grew.”
“Grew?” Max asked.
“Into a building. A shrine so to speak.” Liz explained as Michael helped her to her feet. “Only certain people can enter here. The four of us are included.”
“How do we get out?” Tess asked looking around and not finding an exit.
“More importantly. Where will we be when we get out of here?” Michael asked immediately tensing.
“We will be in the middle of the capital.” Liz explained. “Which is still held by loyalists. Kivar does not have control of the city. We will be fine.”
“You’re sure.” Max asked worriedly.
“Absolutely.” Liz placed a hand on his arm to emphasise her confidence.
“Where’s the door?” Michael asked.
“We have to make one.” Liz replied. “Just use your mind.”

Michael closed his eyes and created the image of a door. He opened his eyes to miraculously find that one had appeared.

“That just doesn’t get old.” He smirked. “Who’s going out first?”
“I think that would be Max?” Liz stated. “He’s the King.”
“What about any threat?” Tess asked as she stood next to Max who in turn wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
“Not an issue.” Liz replied.
“Why not?” Max asked in confusion.
“Because if there was a threat to us within a ten mile radius Michael would be way more edgy and paranoid.” Liz explained with a smirk. “He’s calm and relaxed. You will be fine.”
“Thanks.” Michael grouched.

Liz walked over to Michael and stood on her tiptoes and kissed him on the nose.

“Who knows you baby?” Liz teased.
“You apparently.” Michael smirked as he lifted Liz off the ground in a hug.
“Shall we?” Max interrupted.

Liz was lowered to the ground and the four of them made their way over to the exit.

“Wait.” Liz suddenly stopped. “We should probably change out of these clothes and into our ceremonial robes.”
“Robes?” Michael grimaced.
“Yes robes.” Liz smirked.
“Where are they?” Max asked.
“You guys really aren’t getting the whole ‘we’re in the granolith and you use your imagination’ thing are you?” Liz ground out.
“Oh yeah.” Tess muttered embarrassed.
“What do they look like?” Max asked.
“Just let me take care of it.” Liz replied.

Michael hooked Liz’s arm and pulled her a few feet away from Max and Tess.

“You wanna tell me what’s wrong?” Michael asked.
“Nothing.” Liz looked up at him blankly.
“Liz.” Michael pressed.
“Nothing is wrong, ok!” Liz shot back.

Without warning Michael wrapped his arms around Liz and pulled her into a passionate kiss. Max and Tess looked away a little disturbed by the sudden display of emotion.

“Care to try that again?” Michael gasped as he broke away from Liz.
“Huh?” Liz was momentarily stunned but soon recovered.
“Ow.” Michael muttered after Liz hit him on the arm. “Still waiting.”
“I’m fine.” Liz ground out.
“No, you’re not.” Michael replied. “Tell me what’s wrong.”
“They’re not expecting me.” Liz whispered. “What if they don’t accept me?”
“How can you ask that?” Michael soothed. “You are one of the original Royal Four. Besides there is an equal chance that because we are only half Antarian that they won’t accept us either.”
“Glass half full?” Liz joked. “Ever heard of it?”
“Nope.” Michael shot back. “Alright Max. Get going.”
“Uh… what about the robes?” Max asked.
“You couldn’t have kept quiet.” Michael growled. “There was a chance she had forgotten about those.”
“Hardly.” Tess joked. She smiled at Liz who winked back.

Closing her eyes Liz visualised each of them in their ceremonial robes. She opened her eyes and laughed at the dismayed looks on her friends faces.

“You’re kidding.” Michael complained. “Right?”
“Unfortunately not.” Liz smiled.

The robes were floor length and green. A slight ruffle trim edged the collars giving an Elizabethan look to them. There were no sleeves so their arms were bare. The guys wore basic trousers underneath their robes and sleeveless shirts. Tess and Liz had full length blue a-line dresses.

“You’re good to go.” Liz nodded at Max.

With a nervous shift Max pushed the door open and stepped out into the darkness.

Sorry for the delay in posting. Stupid job.
****************************************************
Michael followed Max out of the Granolith. He knew that Max had to go out first but that didn’t mean he had to like it. Or wait very long before following him out.

A small crowd had gathered around the Granolith, which had expanded into a large sized, double story heighted building. Michael immediately sensed that the men present were not a threat. They all bowed before Max and Michael.

“Your highness.” A small elderly man approached the two men. His whole body language was one of deference and respect.
“Larek.” Max reciprocated the gesture with a small bow.
“Why did you not forewarn us of your arrival?” Larek questioned.
“Security.” Michael replied succinctly.
“Understood General.” A voice rang out from the group behind Larek.
“Thakes?” Michael called out. “How the hell are you still alive?”
“As stubborn as always General.” The man replied with humour.
“Who?” Max subtly asked Michael.
“My second in command.” Michael replied quietly.
“Max?” A timid voice rang out from behind the two men.

They turned to find Tess stepping over the threshold. Max reached out his arm and took her hand in his. Michael remained at Max’s side so Tess walked around the two men and took her place by Max’s side. She smiled. Max had yet to release her hand.

“Queen Ava.” Larek bowed before her prompting the others to do the same.
“Larek.” Tess smiled warmly.

This was it. This was what she had waited for since she had hatched from her pod. She had Max and was acknowledged as Queen. Not only did she have Max but she had Liz as her best friend and sister. And Michael as her protector and friend. All of the fragmented pieces of her life finally came together.

“And Lady Vilandra?” Larek asked nervously.
“Unfortunately she had to remain on Earth.” Max stated sadly.
“How were you able to return?” Thakes asked in confusion. “The Granolith requires all four Royals to work.”

Michael turned to the entrance of the Granolith to find Liz standing on the threshold with a nervous look on her face. Michael smiled warmly at her. He took her hand in his and drew her over to him.

“You remember my wife.” Michael stated looking at Larek.

He could see the looks of confusion on the faces of the men gathered before them.

“Ashana?” Larek stuttered.
“Lady Ashana.” Michael correctly firmly.

Liz gave a slight nod of her head in acknowledgement of Larek’s question.

“How is this possible?” Thakes demanded. “Ashana was killed and not podded.”
“These questions can be answered later.” Max stepped forwards. “Right now I want you to take us to our quarters where we will eat and rest. You will be summoned when we are ready to discuss our available courses of action.”

Michael was impressed by Max. Obviously the King in him was finally starting to show.

“Of course, your highness.” Larek bowed and led the group of four away from the Granolith and towards one of the large entrances.

It was only once they stepped away from the brilliant light of the Granolith that they found themselves in an immense courtyard. Exotic plants lined the paths that meandered off in numerous different directions. The building surrounding the courtyard was a perfect square. At each corner was a square tower that stood twice as high as the four sides.

“We’ll rest first.” Max announced as the group arrived at their quarters. “We will rise in six hours and eat for an hour. Then we will talk.”
“Understood.” Larek bowed and the group of men shuffled down the corridor.
“See you in six hours.” Michael clapped Max on the shoulder then led Liz to their room.

As soon as the door was closed Michael turned to Liz and pulled her into a passionate kiss. Liz responded with a sigh and wrapped her arms around Michael’s shoulders.

“It’s weird how natural it was.” Liz commented through bruised lips after Michael broke contact.
“Weird how?” Michael queried as he pulled Liz over to the bed.
“You didn’t notice.” Liz realised with a smile.
“Notice what?” Michael asked with mild panic.
“That our entire conversation took place in Antarian. Not English.” Liz explained.

Michael looked stunned.

Hi All - thanks for the feedback. Just some fluff as I am still trying to navigate where this story is going.

mary mary - thanks for the kind words.
Detzer84 - Michael protecting his woman - made me smile too.
Lanewalker - you will have to wait for that chapter. Hope this satisfies you for now.
****************************************
Michael tried to think back over the conversation. It didn’t compute in his head that Antarian words had been spoken and he hadn’t even realised it. He, who prized himself on always being aware of everything that happened in his presence, had failed to notice that he wasn’t speaking his ‘mother tongue’.

Liz noticed the furrowed brow and smiled. Some things just didn’t change. She decided to rescue him from the inner frustrations of his own mind. She ran her fingers through his hair a couple of times before grabbing a fistful and forcing him to look up at her.

Michael growled in arousal at Liz’s forceful ministrations. With a seductive smile Liz lowered her mouth to Michael’s. He moved to seal the kiss but Liz held him back. She gently caressed his lips with hers. Teasing him mercilessly.

Michael groaned in frustration. His hands were groping Liz’s body trying to get her to succumb to his torture before he succumbed to hers. It was a battle of wills. One Michael thoroughly enjoyed. Despite being well aware that he was going to lose.

“Liz.” Michael pouted. He was painfully aroused.
“What?” Liz purred innocently as she continued to tease Michael sensitive lips and throat.
“Nothing.” Michael stubbornly refused to admit defeat.

His hands steadied as he pulled Liz’s dress off. He could feel her gasp against his mouth. He ripped her dress at the seams and dropped it to the floor. One hand glided down her smooth stomach to her panties. Through the soft cotton fabric he caressed her sensitive flesh. His other hand teased her nipple through her bra.

“Michael.” Liz gasped as her body juddered in pleasure. She decided to up the ante.

She leaned forwards and straddled Michael’s lap. Her hands dropped from Michael’s hair to his neck. She knew that that was a tender spot for him and she stroked and caressed it to her advantage. Liz felt a surge of pride as Michael’s body melted against hers. His hands trembled but soon continued their attack on her body.

Liz decided to even the score and using her powers removed Michael’s shirt leaving his torso bare. Her hands ran up and down his back. To heighten the torture Liz rubbed her body against Michael’s body and rotated her hips so they ground against his painful erection.

“Oh Christ.” Michael whimpered. “I give. Enough.”
“Do you yield?” Liz demanded.
“Un huh.” Michael muttered.
“Say Uncle.” Liz teased.

Michael growled in frustration.

“Uncle.” The word was half swallowed by Liz as he turned them and pinned her to their bed. Michael quickly worked his way out of his trousers. He ripped Liz’s bra and panties from her body and thrust into her with one smooth motion.

“Yes.” Liz groaned and arched her back. “Please baby. I need you.”
“I love you.” Michael swore as he took full control of the situation. He wanted Liz to feel as much pleasure as he could possibly give her. But the selfish part of him wanted to end the agony she had inflicted on his poor body.
“Baby.” Liz cried. “Please. Now.”
“Anything you want baby.” Michael hoped he sounded cavalier rather than desperate. He wasn’t sure.

Michael quieted Liz’s cries with a kiss before finishing them. Liz’s moans were muffled by his mouth as her body convulsed in pleasure. As she enjoyed the aftershocks of her orgasm Michael joined her.

Liz wrapped a sheet around their sweaty bodies. She noticed Michael had raised himself onto his elbow and was staring down at her with a funny expression in his eyes.

What’s wrong?” Liz asked playfully.
“After two lives I am absolutely certain that sex is better for women than men.” Michael stated glibly.
“What makes you so certain of this?” Liz enquired half amused half confused.
“You feel orgasms internally. Men feel it externally. It has to be better.” Michael replied simply. “I think that’s why men are so fascinated by sex and… lust after it so much. Jealousy that women have the better deal.”

Liz smiled at Michael’s mind and heart. She leaned up to kiss him sweetly and pull him down to her. Michael rested on top of Liz and closed his eyes. His body relaxed and he drifted off to sleep.

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you but my computer ate my entire story twice due to a conflict in software. Including all of the updates. So this is the only chapter that I have been able to get ready.
*********************************************
Max puffed out an irritated breath as he continued to knock on the wooden door in front of him. He had been knocking for so long that his knuckles had started to hurt. He had been waiting with Tess in an adjoining room for thirty minutes before he gathered enough courage to hunt Michael down.

After procrastinating for a couple of minutes Max steeled his resolve and pushed the door open. He entered the room silently and walked cautiously across the large room and over to the four poster bed complete with curtains.

Max was wary of startling Michael and receiving an energy blast for his trouble. Max stood over his best friend and ex-girlfriend with a small smile. Liz was lying on her back with Michael’s torso covering her upper body with his arms wrapped around her waist the sheets were bunched at their hips. Michael’s head rested on Liz’s chest protecting her modesty.

Even in sleep Michael was overly protective of his wife. Max made a mental note to tease Michael about it later. After all… turn about is fair play.

“Liz. Max called out softly. Michael was very territorial and waking up to find another man in his room would be bad. But finding another man in the room whilst Michael and his wife were nude and vulnerable… Deadly.

Liz’s eyes fluttered open. Her hands moved from Michael’s back to his hair and a small smile played on her lips. Her brow suddenly furrowed and she opened her eyes fully to find Max standing over her. A quick look down reassured her that she wasn’t exposing herself in any way.

“We slept in didn’t we?” She croaked with a dry throat.
“We were supposed to meet forty minutes ago.” Max confirmed.
“Sorry.” Liz’s face scrunched up in an apology.
“Would you mind waking him up?” Max asked nodding in Michael’s unconscious direction.
“Sure.” Liz chuckled.

A wicked smile erupted from her lips.

“What?” Max asked in confusion.

Without answering him Liz simply raised an eyebrow, took her free hand and burrowed it under the sheets.

Max looked on in confusion.

It was only when Michael’s body jerked and a primal groan emitted from his mouth that Max realised what Liz had done to wake him up. Michael looked bewildered and still very sleepy. He only seemed to realise that Max was in the room when a chuckle escaped his mouth.

“Max?” Michael thundered. “What the hell are you doing in my room?”

Michael quickly looked down at Liz’s body to make sure she was protected.

“You’re forty minutes late in meeting with Tess and me.” Max replied in a strong tone refusing to let Michael intimidate him. “I was knocking for ages and you didn’t answer. What exactly would you have had me do?”
“Stay the hell out of my room.” Michael growled. “Tell Tess Liz and I will join you in thirty minutes.”
“Thirty minutes? Max demanded. “What the hell for?”
“Liz is going to finish what she started.” Michael turned to Liz with a predatory gleam in his eye that did nothing to mask the lust that was evident on the face (and in his body).
“You’re kidding.” Max cried.
“I’m afraid not.” Liz replied as she fisted her hands in Michael’s hair.
“Michael…” Max stuttered.
“Max.” Michael warned. “Get out now.”

With a picture of disbelief painted on his face Max backed out of the room before he witnessed anything that would permanently scar him.

He trudged into the adjoining suite where Tess was sitting patiently waiting for him.

“Where are they?” She asked in concern.
“In flagrante.” Max ground out.
“Seriously?” Tess asked incredulously.
“We need to meet and discuss our options and they are too busy…” Max trailed off.
“Being together.” Tess supplied.
“Yeah.” Max muttered.
“Are you as jealous as me?” Tess wondered bemusedly.
“Yep.” Max replied shortly as he sat back into the sofa next to Tess.
“How long?” Tess asked as she leaned against Max.
“Thirty minutes apparently.” Max replied.
“Lucky girl.” Tess remarked.

Thanks Lilmisspolarwhore - your continuing support is much appreciated.

Detzer84 - I took the hint when you posted twice - here is the next installment. PS The thought of Michael naked does that to me too. :D

Garcia88 - Thanks for the feedback.

Tess had nearly fallen asleep by the time Michael and Liz entered the room hand in hand. She was gently wakened by Max and sat up blinking slowly trying to clear the haze in front of her eyes.

“Hi.” She smiled wickedly at Liz.
“Hi.” Liz smirked back.
“About time.” Max grumped.
“Shut it.” Michael shot back. He guided Liz to the sofa opposite Max and Tess.

Max signalled to an almost invisible man standing in the wings. The man left the room and re-entered it a few moments later with food for Michael and Liz. With a nod of thanks Michael and Liz began to eat. They exchanged identical expressions of amazement at how incredibly delectable the food was.

“It’s good isn’t it?” Max commented.
“It’s really good.” Liz confirmed. “Isn’t it?” Liz turned to Michael with wide eyes.
“I remember this.” Michael stated calmly. “I don’t know how but I know this.”
“Really?” Max asked curiously.
“Yeah.” Michael nodded.
“You will remember things like that.” Liz placed a hand on his arm. “Your senses are strongly linked to your memories. Taste, sound, touch and smell will all trigger sudden memories. It will be weird.”
“I’m sure.” Tess muttered.
“What do you think of when you taste the food?” Max asked curiously.

Michael hesitated for a few minutes before answering.

“My mother.” He replied simply before continuing to eat.

Liz kissed Michael on the arm before diverting the conversation away from him.

“So.” She stated. “What do we need to discuss?”
“Everything.” Max replied unhelpfully.
“Meeting with the people who have been running Antar in our absence we need to know what has been going on and what direction we need to take our leadership in.” Tess answered.
“The first thing I think we need to discuss is our names.” Michael cut in.
“I don’t understand.” Max said.
“Who are we?” Michael asked.

Silence engulfed the quartet.

“I think we need to be Zan, Ava, Rath and Ashana.” Tess stated. “That’s who the people and government need us to be. They will only accept us if we are who we used to be.”
“I think that’s true.” Max nodded.
“I think we need both.” Liz interjected quietly. “I know better than you do who we were and what we were. But we all know what we are now. Who we are now.”
“I don’t follow.” Michael looked at her with a quizzical brow.
“To me you are Michael.” Liz replied. “I don’t know what else to call you.”
“I like that you call me Michael.” Her husband admitted.
“Perhaps in public we should use our Antarian names and in private use our Earth names.” Max suggested.
“I think that would be best.” Tess nodded in agreement.

Michael chuckled.

“What?” Max asked.
“What are the odds that we will be able to agree so easily on the rest of the things we need to discuss?” Michael explained wryly.
“Well since Liz has tamed you I would imagine that it would be easier than at least I anticipated.” Max replied smartly.
“Hey.” Michael groused.
“He’s untameable.” Liz remarked running her fingers through Michael’s hair.
“I’ll bet.” Tess raised a suggestive eyebrow.

Liz and Tess shared wolfish grins whilst Michael rolled his eyes in embarrassment and Max looked away awkwardly.

“Can we focus please?” Michael begged.
“You should have tried that over an hour ago.” Max shot back petulantly.
“Tess, he’s cranky.” Michael stated. “Is there any chance you could do something about that?”

Liz watched Max and Tess’ jaws drop in astonishment. She swatted Michael’s arm.

“Please.” Liz snorted. “Like sex makes you any less cranky.”

Michael narrowed his eyes at her.

“When do we meet with Larek and the others?” Liz asked desperately trying to get the conversation back on track. She could tell that there was something in the air between Max and Tess but she was also aware that it was in the early stages. And that her husband’s big mouth could do more damage than he intended.
“As soon as we summon them.” Max answered still reeling from Michael’s attack.

Michael at least had the decency to look abashed.

“Do we have a game plan?” Liz asked.
“We ask for an update on the current situation.” Tess replied her cheeks tinged pink in embarrassment.
“And a breakdown of the series of events following our deaths.” Max added.
“We will then adjourn and discuss what direction we want to take our leadership in.” Tess finished.
“You guys have been busy this morning.” Liz complimented with a smile.
“We had time to kill.” Max ground out glaring at Michael.

Liz knew that Michael wouldn’t apologise for his insensitive remark. She also knew that Max’s dented pride would not allow him to forgive his wayward brother immediately. Both men simply had to learn not to antagonise each other or then would accomplish nothing.

“Tess would you please help me with my dress?” Liz asked of her new friend. “I couldn’t quite get it to sit right.”
“Sure.” Tess smiled easily and followed Liz into her and Michael’s suite.
“I’m sorry about what Michael said.” Liz apologised as soon as the door was closed.
“It’s not your fault.” Tess flushed. “Michael doesn’t think.”
“But that’s not fair to you.” Liz pressed Tess’ hand. “Not when your relationship with Max is so undefined.”
“It’s not easy.” Tess admitted. “I have all of these emotions when it comes to him.”
“He does too.” Liz revealed. “I know he does. He’s just afraid.”
“Of me?” Tess asked astonished.
“Of failure.” Liz answered. “Of letting anybody down. He doesn’t want to enter into a relationship with you if he thinks that it will fail.”
“Why would it fail?” Tess asked anxiously.
“Because you don’t know each other.” Liz answered gently. “Not really. You are still trying to get to know one another. It will take a little more time but you will get there. I promise.”
“How do you know all of this?” Tess asked in awe.
“I know Max. He let me know him” Liz replied. “He will let you in. It will just take a little time. You have to get him to trust you implicitly and I think he does. He just needs to realise it.”
“What’s up with Michael?” Tess inquired. “That was kind of harsh.”
“Michael is Michael.” Liz sighed. “I think he is still threatened by my previous relationship with Max and I think it is going to take some time to get used to the new set up. He doesn’t know what his true role is yet. It will be a bit of a power struggle between our boys until that is sorted out.”
“This just keeps getting more and more complicated.” Tess stated sorrowfully.
“It was always going to be highly complicated.” Liz stated simply. “We just need to trust each other.
“Easier said than done.” Tess muttered. “Especially with those two.”
“We probably shouldn’t leave them alone for much longer.” Liz stated. “They could kill each other.”

Leaving the room Tess thanked Liz for her concern and friendship. Whilst Tess was not Maria, Liz was confident that she had an equally valuable friend.

The silence on the other side of the door told Liz that Max and Michael were sulking. Pushing open the door confirmed her suspicions.

“We should get going.” Liz stated authoritatively.
“Otherwise we will waste the rest of the day and get nothing accomplished.” Tess added.

The boys rose without acknowledging each other and walked out of the room with the girls. Tess and Liz exchanged eye rolls as they followed after the grumpy men.

Max naturally led the group as they entered the conference room. The men already assembled inside rose in unison and bowed. A brief nod from Max allowed them to return to their seats.

Each man was seated at his own podium. Four seats were arranged directly opposite the arc of podiums. The seats were padded and interconnected by three tables.

Max motioned for Liz to sit at his left hand side in the centre. Michael sat to the left of his wife, whilst Tess took the seat to the right of Max.

“It would be best.” Max stated. “If you could give us an overview of events since the death of Lady Ashana.”
“Begging your pardon sire. Larek stood. “Why since then?”
“Because that is what I am telling you to do.” Max replied curtly.

Michael took comfort in Max’s attitude. He was asserting himself as King. He would not be pandered to and he would not be looking for assistance from the men seated opposite them. At least until they knew who to trust.

However, he too was confused as to why Max was asking for updates so long before their deaths. He looked over to Max for clarification but received none.

On the table between Max and Liz; Max placed a notepad and pen. Without looking at Max, Liz knew what he wanted her to do. She placed her hand briefly on the pen and pad turning them slightly towards her.

“Begin.” Max commanded.

Of the five men seated opposite them, the short, stocky man farthest to the left rose and bowed. He waved his hand over his podium and an image was created in mid air between the two groups.

Out of the corner of his eye Michael saw Liz pick up the pen. She wrote a few words and turned the pad to Max. It read:
Svan – Minister of the Interior
Possible Traitor.
Max didn’t acknowledge the note and simply nodded for Svan to continue.

“I confess myself not fully prepared to talk about events as early as the death of Lady Ashana but I will do my utmost.” Svan stated in a gratingly grovelling voice. “The image before you is of course of Lord Kivar. His assassination of Lady Ashana and the heir apparent cause an escalation of the war effort.”

Michael stole a quick glance at Liz. She looked calm and relaxed but Michael could tell she was distressed hearing about the death of their son. Truth be told he was as well. He caught the quizzical expression in his brother’s eyes as he looked at Liz. Once again Liz picked up the pen and wrote Max a short note.
Rath and I had a son who was killed when I was.
Michael watched as Max stiffened is surprise. He had forgotten that they had not told anybody other than Maria about Malin. A small surge of jealousy sparked in Michael as he watched a tender glance shared between Max and Liz.

They turned their attention back to Svan who was oblivious to the silent exchange between the Royals.

“After the death of Lady Ashana, Kivar was found to be already in preparation for the coming escalation. It has been surmised that it was his intention to attack our army after word broke of the assassination. He had believed that the army would be leaderless and in a state of disarray.”

Liz’s brow creased in sorrow. She turned towards her husband and placed her hand on the table between them for him to take. Michael remained still. If he saw her movement he failed to acknowledge it.

“Our General, however, would not entertain any thoughts of defeat.” Thakes added with respect to the man who had trained him and promoted him to second-in-command of the armed forces.

“Both armies sustained heavy casualties and both armies walked away without victory.” Svan continued. “This battle took place no less than five miles from the city walls. Our army is still trying to recover its’ losses from that battle.” Svan continued.

“As is Lord Kivar’s army.” Thakes added. “Which is why the situation still remains today. An uncomfortable stale-mate.”

“The Royals reformed with the addition of Princess Vilandra.” Svan grimaced as he continued. “It is our belief that she only came under Lord Kivar’s influence after she was betrothed to Lord Rath. She gave him information regarding troop movements, supply lines and strategy.”

“You are certain.” Larek interrupted. “That she poses no threat.”

“Vilandra does not survive in personality.” Max replied curtly, defending his beloved sister from any further attack. “Her name is now Isabel and she will remain on Earth. She can be of no interest to Kivar as she is not a member of the Royal Four. She is to be left in peace. Am I understood?”

“Yes, sire.” Larek bowed.

“We believe that she was murdered along side the other Royals.” Svan persisted. “We do not know why Kivar had her killed along with you. There is no motive other than perhaps her usefulness had ceased. That was why the decision was made to pod her too. She should, in theory, have as much desire to defeat Kivar after his betrayal of her.”

“After we were podded and sent to Earth…” Max pressed questioningly.

The men at the podium exchanged a few glances and it was decided that Thakes should continue. He rose and waved his hand over his podium and a globe of Antar sprung into being before them.

As second to General Rath I assumed control of the armed forces.” Thakes relaxed when he saw the General nod in approval. “Kivar surrounded the city on three sides and the fourth side is blocked by the sea. We were effectively trapped. The only reason Kivar did not bomb the city was for fear of damaging his prize.”

“Prize?” Tess queried.

“The ancient seat of the King.” Liz explained. “The monarchy of Antar has sat here in the city for thousands of years. It would give Kivar the credibility he was missing and the true authority to rule.”

“Precisely.” Thakes bowed his head in Liz’s direction. He had witnessed first hand how her death had affected his mentor and friend. He praised whatever divine intervention had brought her back into being. And back to the General.

“How have you survived so long being cut off?” Max asked.

“We took comfort in the fact that Lord Kivar would not attack the city.” Thakes explained.

He waved his hand over his podium again and the globe became an aerial map of the city and the surrounding area.

“As you can see Lord Kivar was at the gates.” Thakes illustrated this fact by colouring move of the map around the city in red. “The remaining contingent of the army attacked Kivar’s men from the upper walls and drove them back. It took many months to drive Lord Kivar’s army back far enough.”

The map now showed a considerable area around the city as blue. The reclaimed territory was roughly the size of Manhattan.

“What is to prevent Kivar from simply attacking?” Michael demanded. “Pushing him back was fine but now that you have invested in the open ground between the city and the boundary how do you expect to protect it?”

“We have created an energy shield.” Thakes explained. “It prevents anything from crossing between the two territories.”

“How is its’ energy sustained?” Max asked.

“It takes a great deal of power to run the shield.” Thakes admitted. “It does not leave us with a lot of power for other things such as heating and light.”

“But you cope.” Liz smiled at him.

“Indeed.” Thakes returned her smile with genuine warmth. “Those within the boundary are truly loyal but have suffered a great deal.”

Thakes returned to his seat and another man rose. He bowed and began to speak. Max looked over to the pad between him and Liz where she had written that his name was Rasmus and that he was a finance minister.

“The only thing of value that we possess is the city.” Rasmus stated solemnly. “We have lost everything else that was profitable. We grow crops in the land between the wall and the boundary but it is barely enough to feed the population. We have little ammunition left to engage in battle. There are few of the next generation old enough to take up arms against another attack by Lord Kivar. The situation is bleak.”

“Glass half empty, much?” Liz whispered discreetly to Max who chuckled.

The fifth and final man rose and addressed the Royal Four. He bowed stiffly.

“I concur with Rasmus.” His voice was a deep baritone. “I am Huron and I am Mayor of the city. The people are weary and desperate for an end to the war. It has gotten so insufferable that many would accept defeat for the chance to live free once again.”

“That is enough.” Larek hissed as he too rose to his feet.

The five men were all at once turned against each other pointing fingers and recriminations. After a few moments Max grew weary of the bickering and motioned for Michael to get their attention.

Michael placed two fingers to his lips and blew. A piercing whistle echoed around the room startling the angry men.

“We appreciate that you have all been placed in difficult circumstances for a long time.” Max spoke in a calm but strong manner. “Defeat and surrender are not options. We did not return merely to hand over power to Kivar. Thank you for your presence today. You are dismissed.”

The five men were immediately contrite and embarrassed by their behaviour in front of the Royal Four. They bowed and exited the room.

“Well that was intense.” Tess muttered as she wearily sat back against the chair.

“Tell me about it.” Liz rubbed her face with her hands. She opened her eyes to find Michael kneeling before her.

“You ok?” He asked in concern.

“Fine.” Liz replied. “What about you?” She was still confused by his earlier snub.

“Fine.” Michael mimicked.

“I’ll be honest” Max stated. “I thought that things would be much worse.”

“Famous last words, Maxwell.” Michael grunted with humour.

“We have the protection of the shield.” Max cried out. “I half expected to be in a fox-hole somewhere with bombs and grenades going off over my head.”

“Me too.” Tess admitted. “It’s all a bit more civilised than I thought too.”

“Why the history from just after Ashana was killed?” Michael asked curiously.

“Liz has the clearest memory from all of us.” Max explained. “But after her death she has no clue what happened. So it was only fair for us all to have pretty
much the same information.”
“Fair enough.” Michael shrugged but was secretly grateful to Max for being so thoughtful.

Michael walked over to the notepad that was still sitting between Max and Liz.

“You think Svan is possibly a traitor?” Michael asked in astonishment.
“Yeah.” Liz nodded curtly.
“After Thakes I thought he was the most genuine and trustworthy.” Michael added in worry.
“When Kivar kidnapped me he made mention of one of Zan’s ministers of the interior who had been feeding him information.” Liz revealed.
“Seriously.” Max frowned darkly. “If only Izzy was here.”
“Tell me about it.” Michael muttered.
“I don’t understand.” Tess confessed.
“Isabel had the ability to sense the inner truths of people.” Liz told her. “She could speak to a person and fairly accurately sense their inner most thoughts and feelings. Such as aggression, hatred, passion and love.”
“So Izzy would be able to tell us who we could trust.” Tess realised. “That’s kind of ironic.”
“Tell me about it.” Liz laughed.

Garcia88 - this will answer your question about Michael and why he was ackting the way he was.

Lilmisspolarwhore - here's the next installment. Hope you enjoy.
****************************************************
The group sat together silently in the conference room for a while. Each processing the enormity of the reality of their current situation. They were the leaders of a small band of people, who existed in a bubble under the threat of complete annihilation from a powerful enemy.

“Max.” Michael spoke to his brother. “You and I need to discuss some particulars. If Liz and Tess will excuse us for a few hours.”

Tess looked up in surprise. She quickly looked over to Liz who wore an identical expression on her face. She slowly blinked several times before nodding in consent. Max and Michael left the room.

“Why would they want to discuss something without us?” Tess asked in a hurt voice.

“I have no idea.” Liz admitted.

The girls remained seated together for a few minutes pondering the confusing turn of events.

“Well screw them.” Tess muttered.

“Ha.” Liz laughed. “Yeah, screw them if they want to have their boys club!”

“Stupid boys.” Tess added.

“Let’s go back to our suite.” Liz rose from her chair and smoothed out her dress. “Come on.”

The two girls walked back through the seemingly endless corridors. They nodded in response to the bows and curtseys of the staff. They arrived back at their residence and walked into Liz and Michael’s suite. Flopping down on the bed both girls let out irritated sighs.

“What the hell have they got to talk about that they can’t talk about with us in the room?” Tess grumped. Her body language was angry. “I didn’t come all the way here just to be sidelined.”

“Me either.” Liz comforted Tess with an arm around her shoulders. “Knowing Michael, thought, who was the one who initiated the conversation it was probably about protecting us.”

“What do you mean?” Tess inquired.

“Body guards or something to do with making sure that we are not targeted by Kivar.” Liz explained.

“Why wouldn’t they want us there when they talked about it?” The irate blonde demanded.

“It’s a guy thing.” Liz said as she rolled her eyes. “Protecting their women and all that crap!”

“Stupid boys.” Tess groused.

“We really shouldn’t spend our time complaining about them.” Liz reasoned. “We should be talking about what we are going to do here.”

“We really didn’t have a lot to do in the past, did we?” Tess realised.

“Not really.” Liz mused. “We should probably try and do more this time around.”

“Like what?” Tess asked with interest.

Liz didn’t respond. She sat back with a pensive look on her face.

“Where would we be needed the most?” Liz questioned.

“Well Michael has got the armed forces.” Tess replied. “Max pretty much covers everything else.”

“Not really.” Liz rebutted. “He has to deal with the politics and the policy. As interesting as that sounds. He deals with really general things.”

“So we can focus on the specifics.” Tess mused.

“The people need food.” Liz stated.

“And medicine.” Tess added.

“Shelter.” Liz chimed in.

“Protection.” Tess added.

“Michael had got that covered.” Liz replied.

“I meant protection for women and children.” Tess clarified.

“Like widows and orphans?” Liz asked.

“Yeah.” Tess nodded.

“That’s a good idea.” Liz smiled.

“We should talk to the ministers tomorrow and find out what is already in place.” Liz suggested.

“And we need to find out what our resources are.” Tess added.

“That sounds like a plan.” Liz grinned.

Tess reached across with her right hand, which Liz shook readily.

A few rooms away Michael and Max sat in deep conversation. The atmosphere was distinctly different from the room where their wives were sitting. Tense shoulders and frowns marred the two men.

“It’s hard to get your mind around.” Max mumbled. “All of this information coming at you at once plus sudden bursts of memory from your subconscious.”

“There is a lot that needs to be decided.” Michael stated firmly.

“Without Liz and Tess?” Max questioned.

“They’re the chink.” Michael ground out.

“Sorry?” Max was surprised.

“They are the chinks in the armour.” Michael repeated in an equally grim tone. “They figured that out the last time and they will figure that out this time.”

“You realise that this is the surest way to piss them off, right?” Max joked.

“Better pissed off than dead.” Michael growled. “We don’t know who to trust right now. Until we do… We need to protect them right now. If anybody knows how important they are to us…”

“They’re targets.” Max finished.

“We need to distance ourselves from them.” Michael stated, whilst looking at the floor.

“You are willing to take that big a gamble with your relationship to Liz?” Max asked seriously. “Because there is a big chance she will not forgive you for this.”

“I know.” Michael stated with conviction despite the painful squeeze in his chest. “But I can’t let her die.”

“I understand your feelings.” Max leaned forward sincerely. “I truly do. But you need her. You need her. I think she is the only way you will…”

“Will what?” Michael demanded as he rose and walked over to the lit fireplace.

“You will find the strength to do what it is that is expected of you.” Max finished.

“And what exactly is expected of me?” Michael growled.

“You will win this war.” Max stated firmly. “It won’t be me. I won’t be the one who saves this planet. It will be you.”

“Don’t be so stupid.” Michael retorted in frustration.

“I’m serious.” Max pressed as he joined Michael at the fireplace. “You will lead the army. You will win the battles and you will win the war. Not me. Not Liz and not Tess. You.”

“No pressure then.” Michael rolled his eyes.

“I would trust no one else to do it.” Max continued as though Michael hadn’t spoken. “As someone who would take on the responsibility but none of the glory who else would I trust to win this war and still let me have the credit?”

Michael chuckled at Max’s words.

“You’re an ass.” Michael stated as he returned to his chair.

“Maybe so.” Max smiled. “But are you sure about this?”

“Absolutely.” Michael confirmed. “The way I figure it I will move out of our suite and into whatever make shift barracks are available for the army. Liz will remain here with Tess, protected by bodyguards.”

“Do I remain here?” Max asked still trying to fully accept that Michael was serious.

“It would be best if you kept away from them too.” Michael replied.
“This is nuts.” Max stated.

“You asked for her to sit with you today.” Michael pressed. “They know that you count on her and trust her and that she is important to you.”

“I know that.” Max interrupted. “But…”

“No.” Michael’s voice trembled with emotion. “You never had to suffer the loss of your wife. I can’t live through that again.”

Max was stunned by the raw voice his brother spoke in.

“You need her.” Max repeated.

“Yes I do.” Michael admitted. “I need her to be alive.”

Max sat back in his chair in defeat.

“Understood.” Max nodded. “I’m far from happy about this and want that noted in the minutes.”

Later that day Michael steeled his resolve and entered his suite. Liz was still sitting on the bed but she was surrounded by pieces of paper. She looked up and smiled at him as he entered. Tapping her pen thoughtfully against her mouth she wrote some final words on the pad in front of her and put the writing implements away.

“Have fun at you boys only meeting?” She teased as she jumped off the end of the bed.

“Things were discussed.” Michael replied softly.

“Well, Tess and I had a girly meeting.” Liz revealed in an excited voice. “We were talking about how we could help with the current situation. We came up with loads of ideas.”

“That’s great.” Michael tried to smile but failed.

“What’s wrong?” Liz asked in concern. She knew that something was wrong when Michael announced that he wanted to speak to Max alone, especially after the snarky comments that he directed at his brother earlier that morning.

“We need to get our plans together.” Michael spoke in a wavering voice that he fought to get under control.

“Of course.” Liz placed a hand on his arm tenderly. “Just let me know how I can help.”

“I need to take my place as head of the army.” Michael stepped away from Liz knowing that the tiny woman was capable of making him break his resolve.

“How do you plan on doing that?” Liz questioned, she was becoming increasingly uneasy about Michael’s body language and tone.

“I am going to move into the barracks.” Michael replied whilst looking at the floor.

“You? Not we?” Liz demanded. “How long for?”

“I don’t know.” Michael replied.

“I don’t understand.” Liz gasped as she walked away from Michael towards the bed. She clung on to one of the posts.

“We can’t waste any more time.” Michael added more passionately. “I am going to leave soon.”

“What about me?” Liz whispered. “What about us?”

“I think this is a little bigger than us.” Michael replied.

“Two lifetimes.” Liz stuttered. “That is how long we have needed each other. We lost each other in our previous lives. But some miracle has brought us back together again.” Liz turned to face Michael with anger and resentment in her watery eyes. “And you want to throw that away?”

Michael turned away from her.

“No.” Liz screamed. “You look at me and tell me why you are choosing to leave me!”

“I have to do my duty.” Michael’s brow creased and his jaw tightened. “I don’t want to hurt you. I really don’t. But my duty has to come first.”

With that said, Michael turned and left the room. Liz was too upset to notice or feel the distress Michael was projecting as he hurried out of the room.

Away from her.

Liz sank to the floor in tears. She remained that way until Tess entered the room.

Tess was stunned to see Liz lying on the floor with a pale face and trembling lips.

“What happened?” Tess demanded as she joined Liz on the floor.

“Michael left.” Liz stammered.
“What?” Tess gasped as she lay down on the carpet next to her friend. She took Liz’s hand trying to comfort her as best she could. “Why?”

“His duty.” Liz sobbed.

“That makes no sense?” Tess exclaimed.

“Why is he doing this?” Liz cried. “I don’t understand.”

“I’m sure that Max does.” Tess announced. “I’ll be back in a moment. I’m going to speak to Max.”

With that said Tess rose from the floor and stormed out of the room. Her best friend, her sister was being hurt and she was determined to find out why. With no preamble Tess barged into Max’s office to find the King sitting at his desk.

“What are you doing?” Tess asked.

Max stopped packing his things and sat back heavily.

“I’m packing to move to my new office.” Max explained gently.

“Your new office?” Tess exclaimed. “But you have always had this as your office.”

“It’s best not to do things exactly the same in this life as we did in our previous lives.” Max reasoned without looking at her.

“So Michael leaves and you follow?” Tess spat out angrily. “Is this how it’s supposed to be? We are supposed to be a unit, a group, a family. That is the only way we are going to succeed and win.”

“I understand that you are angry.” Max said sullenly. “But it is for the best.”

Tess stood in front of Max with a distressed look on her face. Last night before going to their separate bedrooms Max had kissed her goodnight. Hope had swelled within her only to be cruelly and savagely crushed.

“Says you.” Tess struggled to speak through her thick voice.

She turned and walked away from Max, refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing her cry. She walked quickly back to Liz’s room and rejoined her friend on the floor. Liz looked up into Tess’ eyes and immediately understood that Max was leaving too.

“Stupid boys.” Liz grumbled through her tears.

“Stupid boys.” Tess agreed.

To Dolly F, Lilmisspolarwhore and forever dreamer - thank you for continuing to read my drivel.
*************************************************************
The following weeks for Liz and Tess were filled with meetings in an attempt to stop feeling sorry for themselves. They were determined to not sink into uselessness and instead carried on with their plans to help their people.

True to his word Michael had arranged for body guards to follow Liz and Tess wherever they went. Their levels of annoyance increased daily. The two men chosen to guard them followed them everywhere. They didn’t get a moment’s peace.

“Where’s your shadow.” Liz groused as Tess entered their conference room. “I still can’t shake mine.”

“He’ll be here in a moment.” Tess moaned. “He needed a bathroom break.”

“For the love of.” Liz grumbled. “This is ridiculous. The shield means that no one can get through to hurt us.”

“Perhaps someone is already amongst us just waiting for the opportunity to strike.” Liz’s bodyguard surmised quietly from the corner.

“If that were the case surely someone would have attacked by now.” Tess complained. “Privacy is a great thing, you know!”

“As is life.” Liz’s bodyguard replied succinctly.

“Huh.” Tess mused. “You got a smart one. Mine barely says a word.”

“Mine seems to be channelling Kyle with his Buddhist comments.” Liz muttered.

A knock at the door interrupted their discussion. Liz’s bodyguard walked over and opened the door making sure that Liz and Tess were not visible to those outside. After taking a moment to ensure the identities of the guests he allowed them access to the conference room.

The five male guests all bowed in the presence of the Royals before taking their seats at the table. Liz straightened the papers on the desk in front of her and prepared to meet the challenges that the meeting will bring.

“Thank you for you attendance.” Liz stated firmly. “We are here to further discuss the creation of the hospital and the orphanage.”

“As we explained to you at our last meeting these are demands out-with our abilities.” Svan, Minister of the Interior stated. “We are impressed by your suggestions. However, they simply are too demanding of our resources.”

“We disagree.” Tess stated. “We have met with other ministers and have produced a plan that should allow us to fulfil our objectives.”

“For the orphanage we have designated the smaller west wing.” Liz stated as she looked over her notes. “We estimate that the number of orphans is 160, a number lower than we had originally expected. There is adequate space and facilities.”

“Who will take charge of these orphans?” Milos, Minister of Justice, asked.

“We have advertised and spoken to several members of the public.” Tess answered. “An untapped resource is the elderly. We have twenty volunteers who are willing to accept food and shelter in lieu of payment to care for the children.”

“They will all be fully vetted of course.” Svan stated.

“Of course.” Liz smiled at the grating comment. “We have access to all of their personal information from the hall of records.”

“At our previous meeting we discussed the shortage of farmable land.” Tess continued. “Some of the most fertile and nourished soil on this planet is within the walls of the palace. The Royal gardens are to be used to grow food. The plants will be removed.”

“Those gardens were planted by the King himself fourteen generations ago.” Svan protested.

“I’m sure that King Ranos would not protest in any way.” Liz refuted in annoyance. “If it is the choice between beauty and feeding the people there is no choice. The people must and will come first.”

“Measures will be made by the Royal gardeners to improve the quality of the soil outside the city walls too.” Tess added equally annoyed by Svan. “History must not in any way supersede the needs of the present.”

“All resources must be pooled and distributed equally.” Liz reshuffled her papers. “What we are proposing is a national service to all of those who are not already engaged with the armed forces.”

“Anybody who is suitably abled will be drafted to work on the land or in another industry that will help the war effort.” Tess continued. “We will need every man, woman and child to contribute.”

“How do you expect children to help with the war effort?” The minister of finance asked in a derogatory tone.

“Well, Adron.” Liz tried to suppress her anger. “There is no way to know how long it will take to turn the tide of the war. Every child needs to be educated to allow them to fulfil multifunctional roles when they grow up. The children will need to be educated in politics, agriculture, history, strategy and every other subject that will be necessary to ensure that even though we are fighting our brothers that we still remain true to ourselves.”

“Your support so far has been disappointing and I am wondering if you are necessary at all.” Liz fumed. “We are making a concentrated effort to improve the quality of life of our people who have been suffering for a long time. These people are weary and tired and sick of this war. It must be in the uppermost of their minds that perhaps they would be better treated or have better lives under Kivar’s rule.”

“We have tried to include those who ruled in our stead as a mark respect for you work and loyalty” Tess seethed. “But you are more of a hindrance than a help and we no longer need or request your council.”

“You are dismissed.” Liz stated firmly as she rose.

Liz and Tess walked out of the room followed by Liz’s bodyguard. On the other side of the door they met with Tess’ bodyguard who was guarding the door. The four people walked at a quick pace through the corridors back to their suite.

Tess and Liz had decided to stay together in the same suite after they had been deserted by their men. Tess’ bed had been moved into Liz’s room and the two were almost always together.

“I’m going to go for a walk.” Liz announced as she stopped pacing.

“Good idea.” Tess teased. “You are starting to wear a hole in the rug.”

“Come on shadow.” Liz waved at her bodyguard. “Let’s go.”

With a brief nod Liz’s bodyguard followed her out of her suite and into the gardens. He kept a respectful distance from her. Always trailing her by a few feet, keeping an eye out for any possible dangers.

“Would you stop that?” Liz cried out in exasperation. “I feel like I’m being stalked. Would you come and walk beside me?”

“As you wish.” He bowed and took his place walking beside her.

“Why am I not allowed to know your name?” Liz demanded of the tall man beside her.

“My duty is to protect you.” He replied. “I am not to befriend you.”

“Did the General impose that restriction on you?” Liz demanded as she stopped walking.

“It is easier to protect you from a respectful distance.” He replied. “I have a better view of your surroundings and can more easily spot potential threats.”

“So, yes he did impost this restriction on you.” Liz surmised. “Asshole!”

“The General simply wishes you to be safe.” He spoke quietly.

They continued walking until they reached the small west wing where the orphans and elderly volunteers were in the process of moving in.

“I would still like to know you name.” Liz pressed. “If I was in danger how would you know that I needed you if I couldn’t call for you?”

As her bodyguard opened the door to allow her entrance he spoke his name in a low voice.

“Kavos.”

Liz looked up at him in shock but said nothing. She was suddenly aware that the hustle and bustle in the room had ceased the moment she entered it. It was an unsettling feeling but one that she was getting considerably used to.

She graced the occupants with a smile and motioned for them to continue.

“I am not here to hinder you.” Liz smiled graciously. “Please continue. I am here to help.”

Liz walked through the rooms with Kavos in tow. His body language had stiffened considerably. Liz smiled at the small children who were running from room to room giddy with excitement at living in the palace.

A sad little girl was sitting in the corner with an elderly gentleman. She was small and thin with small eyes that looked black. Liz sat down next to the lowly little girl and placed a hand on her shoulder. Smiling she motioned for the man to continue his story.

“The front line is the scariest but best place to be.” The old man’s voice wavered. “You can hear the terrible noises of the guns. But no one looks scared. I used to sit and look at the other guys and wonder why they weren’t as scared as me.”

“They weren’t scared?” The little girl asked in awe.

“They were scared.” The old man smiled. “But they pretended that they weren’t, which is what I learned to do. And you know what?”

“What?” The girl asked with wide eyes.

“I wasn’t scared after a while.” He reached across and tapped her lightly on the tip of the nose. “If you pretend long enough you can believe. We were all together and we all wanted to be strong for each other.”

“A band of brothers.” Liz added.

“My fellow warriors are my brothers.” The elderly man nodded in agreement.

“A famous play-write from Earth once wrote,” Liz paused for a moment before translating and slightly altering the works of Shakespeare.

This story shall the good man teach his son,
And remembrance of battle shall ne’er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered,
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers,
For he today, that sheds his blood with me,
Shall be my brother,

“Truer words were never spoken.” Kavos bowed his head.

“Agreed.” The only man nodded knowingly.

The little girl jumped off of her chair with a smile. She kissed the old man on the cheek before running off to play with the other children.

“How long were you on the front line?” Liz asked gently.

“The better part of ten years.” The old man replied gravely. “We were a family up there.”

“I’m sure.” Liz spoke sensitively. “What were conditions like?”

“Unpleasant.” The man replied succinctly.

“Did you serve with my husband?” Liz asked. She could tell that the man was not happy talking about the past.

“General Rath?” The man questioned. “I did serve with him. A good man. A great leader.”

Liz could tell by the way he spoke that he was being honest and not simply speaking well of his superior.

“I am interested in gathering some information for him.” Liz stated with a smile. “I would be very interested in your experiences and memories of your time at the front.”

“I’m not sure how much help I could be.” The man stated modestly.

“You could be of great service to the General and the future strategy of the armed forces.” Liz pressed gently. “I would be greatly interested in anything you could tell me about the conditions, monotony, dangers, food, supplies and warfare. It could be of great help.”

“I would be happy to oblige.” The old man stated with gratitude and pride.

“If you could write it down and send it to me.” Liz shook his hand in thanks. “If you have any brothers here or know any other men who served in the army I would greatly appreciate their information too.”

“I will pass the word.” The old man nodded in understanding.

Liz and Kavos walked away from old man and continued in their inspection of the new residence for the orphans. The beds were same sex to a maximum of four per room. The rooms each had a single bed per occupant and en-suite toilet facilities.

Small children were running around chaotically. The elderly volunteers kept apologising for their behaviour but Liz was quick to express her happiness at their joy and obliviousness to her and her position.

“The minimum age for entry into the army is fifteen.” Liz stated with distaste. “In my opinion that is too young but I am in no position to change that. This residence is open to all children below the age of fifteen and to girls up until the age of seventeen.”

“It is a noble institution.” Kavos remarked quietly.

“It is common place on Earth.” Liz replied. “However, not all orphanages are run with altruistic intentions or are even kind to the children.”

Liz and Kavos exited the building satisfied with what they were seeing. They entered the central courtyard to find the gardeners pulling up the plants in preparation for the vegetable plot.

As they entered the building Liz entered Max’s old office with Kavos in tow. She sat down and motioned for Kavos to join her.

“Does my husband know who you are?” Liz asked directly.

“I am sure I don’t know what you mean.” Kavos replied avoiding her eyes.

“You were named for your father weren’t you?” Liz pressed certain that she was right. “You look like him. It took me a while to recognise that. You are the same height, build and have similar features. You have your brother’s same gift for stoicism and imposing presence.”

Kavos remained silent.

“Does my husband know that you and he share a father?” Liz demanded.

“Yes.” Kavos nodded.

“Before or after you were assigned to my protection?” Liz asked.

“Why does that matter?” Kavos asked in confusion.

“If he assigned you to protect me after her discovered your identity that means he trusts you and accepts you as his brother.” Liz explained. “If he didn’t know your parentage before you were assigned to me…”

“He did not know.” Kavos revealed.

“He didn’t react well did he?” Liz sighed in exasperation. “What did he say?”

“It is between me and him.” Kavos insisted tightly.

“Oh Christ.” Liz moaned. “Michael” She called out in deep irritation.

Kavos remained silent.

“I know it may seem like rejection.” Liz tried to soothe Kavos’ hurt. “It’s anger towards your father. Not you. Rath was devastated when your father was killed and now to find out that he was involved with a woman and had another child without telling Rath about it… it’s devastating to him.”

“My mother was married to my father.” Kavos stated indignantly.

“That’s even worse as far as Rath is concerned.” Liz explained. “The two men were so close during their lives. Or at least Rath thought so. For your father to meet your mother, marry her and have a child means that Rath was not as close to his father as he thought. And despite present conditions; family is the most important thing to Rath.”

Kavos nodded unconvinced.

“He did not remove you as my protection after he discovered your identity.” Liz reasoned. “He trusts you to protect me and in his own way I am sure that he feels better that I am being protected by his brother.”

Kavos nodded but remained unconvinced.

Liz decided to let the situation lie. She rose and walked out of the room knowing that Kavos would be more comfortable in a formal situation.

Liz joined Tess in their suite. Tess was sitting at the desk writing with her bodyguard standing by the window. Liz made sure to make a lot of noise as she entered the room. She had made the mistake of being too quiet around Tess’ bodyguard and had come face to face with a weapon drawn in preparation for meeting an attacker.

“I’m tired.” Liz announced. “I’m going to bed.”

“How was the orphanage?” Tess asked as Liz gathered her night clothes and walked into the bathroom for some privacy.

“It was great.” Liz’s voice sounded upbeat and happy. “The kids seem very happy. The place is really taking shape.”

“You ok?” Tess asked in concern.

“I’m going to sleep.” Liz stated as she emerged from the bathroom. “Wish me pleasant dreams.”

Tess understood the hint.

“I think that I will go to sleep too.” Tess announced.

It took her a few minutes to finish off her paperwork. She changed in the bathroom and crept into bed. Taking a last look at her sleeping friend she laid her head on her pillow and entered Liz’s subconscious.

She found Liz sitting on the couch Michael had created in their sanctuary.

“What’s going on?” Tess asked in concern. There were very few things that they couldn’t speak about in front of their bodyguards.

“My bodyguard’s name is Kavos.” Liz announced.

“Wow, they have names.” Tess snorted.

“He’s Michael’s half brother.” Liz added.

“Shit.” Tess gasped. “Does Michael know?”

“He knows.” Liz confirmed. “As far as I can tell he didn’t react well.”

“I can imagine not. I didn’t know that Rath’s father remarried.” Tess exclaimed.

“None of us knew.” Liz revealed. “Especially not Rath. He must have gone ballistic when he found out that this had been kept from him.”

“What are you going to do?” Tess asked.

“What can I do?” Liz shrugged. “I just wanted you to know.”

“It’s not like we can talk to Michael.” Tess surmised. “What did Kavos say?”

“He is so much like his brother.” Liz murmured. “He barely said a word.”

They were suddenly pulled out of their subconscious and both awoke to find Max in their room.

“What the hell?” Tess demanded.

“Both of you need to get up now.” Max demanded.

“What the hell, Kavos?” Liz complained. “Couldn’t you have tackled him at the door?”

Liz expected an answer from Kavos but received none. She noticed that he looked pale and agitated.

“We’ll be right there.” Liz announced.

It took her and Tess a few minutes to waken fully and follow Max out of their room and into his old office.

“We have a situation.” Max declared. He paced around and was very agitated.

“Could you let us know what the situation is?” Tess groggily complained.

“Michael has been kidnapped.” Max whispered in a hoarse voice.

“Kidnapped?” Liz exclaimed. “How did Kivar get through the shield?”

“We don’t know.” Max sat down heavily. “We have no idea when he was taken. Only that the last time he was seen was at breakfast this morning. After that we have no idea where he went or with whom.”

“What are you doing to retrieve him?” Liz asked calmly.

“We have sent a scouting party out to locate him.” Max revealed. “Other than that there isn’t much we can do.”

“Have you tried to dreamwalk him?” Tess asked.

“No, not yet.” Max stated in realisation. “I’ll do that later.”

“Well, thank you for letting us know.” Liz stated as she rose from her seat.

“That’s it?” Max demanded. “You’re not worried?”

“There is really no point in us worrying.” Liz stated coldly. “It’s not going to get us anywhere and you certainly have made it clear that you don’t want our help.”

“If we worry it will just be added stress for everybody involved.” Tess added. “We’ll go back to bed.”

“Goodnight.” Liz tossed over her shoulder as she and Tess left the room, followed by their bodyguards.

“Are you that disinterested in your husband’s welfare?” Kavos whispered harshly as they re-entered Liz and Tess’ suite.

“To panic would do no good.” Liz replied quietly as she slipped back under her covers.

Kavos took his position by the entrance as his counterpart stood by the window. When all was quiet they would take turns in sleeping until their charges awoke. With a cold fury Kavos watched over the wife of his brother.

After a view hours Max knocked on the door. Kavos opened the door and informed the King that the ladies were sleeping. Zan announced that he had been unable to contact Rath.
