Summary: What happens when the person you loath with your entire being suddenly becomes the person you can’t see yourself living without?
Author’s Note: I’m not going to lie, this is my first Fan-fiction attempt so things will probably start off a little rocky. But what can I say, there are some seriously inspiring writers here and I am honored to say that I am a part of that.
Chapter 1
“God, I hate him.”
“Maria? Seriously? Give it a break already. I mean, what did he ever do to you?” While Maria adored Alex, after all he was one of her best friends, sometimes the boy was to dense for his own good.
“No, Alex, I will not give it a rest. I mean, look at him over there in his designer jeans, with holes in them I might add that some little child living in China probably had to spend all day creating for like a penny in pay just so he can look like a redneck, cowboy wannabe. Seriously Alex, why doesn’t he give it a rest already?” Maria just couldn’t understand why he had the whole school, the whole town even fooled. Yes, okay, his face was chiseled like he was designed after a Greek god, and yes he does have a body most males would kill for, but once you got past all of that there was no substance. He might have been able to charm the pants off of almost every girl going to West Roswell High, but she would be damned if her pants would go flying in his direction any time soon.
“Is your mom making you watch documentaries again Maria? That has to explain the rant you just made regarding poor children in China. And I’m sure that they get more than a penny a day.” Alex said, looking at Maria like not only was she crazy, but maybe by sitting to close to her he would catch whatever it was making her like that.
“Listen Alex, it is not the point. Michael thinks jus because he has the right clothes, drives a nice car, and his family is loaded that his shit doesn’t stink. Well let me tell you Alex, everyone’s shit stinks, even Mr. Perfect’s, and his might just smell worse than anyone’s” Alex could tell Maria was done with the subject, at least for the moment, when she looked over his right shoulder and smiled.
“Hey, Lizzie Poo, how has your day been going?” Maria asked, using Liz’s nickname from when they were six years old and Liz had accidentally pooped her pants trying to get the buttons opened. That was Maria though, she never let anything go, whether it be good or bad.
“Please Maria, I haven’t pooped my pants in ten years, can’t you come up with a better nickname than that?” Liz asked. Maria laughed, however, since Liz asked the same thing every day and Maria’s response was always the same.
“All it takes is one time Liz, once is enough.” With that Maria started eating her lunch with a triumphant grin on her face.
Rolling her eyes Liz moved onto a different topic, “Whatever. So what is the plan for Friday? Movie night?” Every Friday night Liz, Maria, and Alex always hung out whether it be at one of their houses or out gallivanting around town. In Roswell, there really was much to do besides going to the movies or renting one, but that didn’t stop them from planning at least something. Even with Maria and Liz working at the UFO Museum they were still able to work their schedules so they had Friday nights free to hang out.
“Haven’t you guys rented every movie in town yet?” Came a voice from behind them.
“No, you see Isabel, there is an endless supply of movies, what with new ones coming out every week. It is one of those things we will never be able to explain, it is like they mate like rabbits, having little movie babies left and right. Someone should really put a stop to it. Maybe that is what we will do, come up with a campaign to stop the reproduction of movies, who’s with me?” Alex stated. He has always had that innate ability to sound totally sarcastic and sincere at the same time. It was one of the things that Maria loved about him. Because, while he gave her a hard time about her hatred for Michael, he seemed to at least pretend to hate Isabel, even if Maria knew he secretly loved her.
“You know you should really be nicer to me, ya know? No wonder you are on the bottom of the totem pole around here, look how you treat your superiors.” With that, Isabel turned and started to walk off towards her group of friends. Superior my butt, thought Maria.
“The only thing superior about any of them is their bank account and that doesn’t really matter when you judge their humanness.” Liz stated, trying to lighten the mood at the table.
“Humanness Liz? Aren’t you supposed to be the smart one?” Alex asked incredulously.
“Liz is right Alex, the only thing they have going for them is money. I bet none of them, Isabel, Max, Michael, hell even Kyle, don’t have souls. They are probably pod people from another planet who have come to eat our souls. I mean, no one can appear to be that perfect.” As Maria finished her second rant in less than an hour, she gathered up her things.
“I’m not saying that it wouldn’t be nice to not have to work so damn hard in life, but if it means that I would ultimately have to hang out with Michael for any length of time besides here at school I would rather end up being one of those people who sell flowers on the side of the road.” And with that final statement Maria started heading to her locker to get ready for her next class. Never knowing that her nemesis was watching her the entire time with a smirk on his that could only mean one thing, trouble.

Tabata: Thanks for reading. I’m glad you like the beginning, hopefully I can keep it up.
Tequathisy: Thanks.
Earth2Mama: Alex is being a very typical guy, but he also understands that there are differences between himself and Isabel that may make them incompatible. He is just being cautious because he knows that the odds are it won’t work (but he won’t be able ot keep the act up very long, do guys ever keep the act up? Lol). For Maria, I never took her as someone to hide her feelings through out the entire show and I wanted to keep that about her. If she loves you she loves you with her whole heart and if she hates you, then you better watch out. The reasons behind her animosity with slowly be revealed more and more. As for Michael, it’s a little hard to not notice her hatred and being the typical guy that he is has an innate desire to antagonize her (he also knows why she hates him which makes the torture all the more appealing)
RhondaAnn: Thanks for reading. It is safe to assume that Michael and Maria have been enemies for awhile. They kind of have a Tom and Jerry like relationship. Maria hates Michael and can’t wait to catch him with his pants down so she can feel superior and Michael loves to egg her on.
Chapter 2
“What is with your obsession with Maria DeLuca? I mean, I know she is easy on the eyes in a weird sort of not your typically pretty way, but every time I see you looking at her it looks like you have turned into an evil scientist, what gives?” Kyle asked one of his best friends, Michael, while they were getting ready to pack up and head to their next class.
“I do not have an obsession with Allergy Lips DeLuca, alright. She just hates me and I like to have a little fun, that’s it. And by the sounds of it, you have been spending time obsessing over DeLuca as well if you can give that insanely long description of her atypical beauty.” Michael didn’t get it, why couldn’t his friends understand that he in no way, shape, or form had any intentions when it came to DeLuca, and even if he did hell would freeze over before she allowed his to act on those intentions.
“Allergy Lips DeLuca? Nice Michael, real nice.” Max stated.
“What? How is that so bad? I mean, have you ever looked at those lips, I mean really looked? It looks like she slathered on peanut butter like it was lip gloss and then realized she was allergic to it.” Michael stated, a little annoyed at Max for making him feel like a jerk for a second. God, why can’t Max get off his high horse, just for a day, thought Michael. At the same time he noticed the smirk on Kyle’s face.
“What is with the stupid smirk?” Michael asked, not sure he wanted to know the answer.
“Well, you said so yourself. You need to take a good, long, hard look at Maria’s lips to come up with your description of them. That can only mean that you have taken a good, long, hard look at her lips. Is that why you had to run out of gym the other day, you were thinking about those lips and your other head started to think the same things?” But before Michael could reply Kyle was up and running to his next class.
“What? You too now I suppose.” Michael exclaimed after noticing the smile come to Max’s face after Kyle’s statement.
“You do have to admit, the boy may have a point. Maybe not about the whole gym thing, but about you staring at Maria. It’s okay if you like her ya know. I mean, look at your track record, Maria would probably be a step up from some of the girls you have dated.” Max stated, either not noticing the furious gaze that Michael was shooting at him the entire time he was talking or not caring.
“I do not, and I repeat, do not have a crush on Maria DeLuca. She entertains me, and once school is over with and we graduate Maria will never cross my mind. She is a blip on the radar of my life, got it?” Michael growled out before turning and walking out of the cafeteria like he was about to go kill something.
That boy is so delusional, thought Max, if only there was a way to get him to see his reaction to Maria for what it was, a repressed crush.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Maria, wait up.” Max called while trying to catch her on her way to her car.
“Is there something I can help you with? Kick in the balls perhaps?” Maria yelled over her shoulder, never once slowing down.
“Ouch, I think I’ll pass,” Max said just as he caught up with her. “What I wanted to know is when you wanted to get together to work on your chemistry grade. Mr. Randolph did put me in charge of making sure you pass.”
“He only wants to make sure I pass his class so he never has to deal with me again.” Maria stated matter of factly. “And since I am sure you have a million other things to do besides tutor me, I think I will be on my way. You can just tell Mr. Randolph that I’m hopeless, he’ll believe that.”
I just don’t get it, does she really think she is as worthless as she sounds. Max couldn’t believe that Maria, who was usually so full of life could seem so empty. I wonder what happened between lunch and now to make her question herself, I know it can’t just be Mr. Randolph making her take tutoring lessons.
“What happened Maria? I know you are upset about something, so what it is? Maybe I can help.” Max seems so sure of himself, like not only is he going to make me pass chemistry, but he is going to be my very own Dr. Phil, thought Maria.
“Nothing Max, it doesn’t matter. I just let an idiot get to me, once I get away from this place everything will be fine.” And with that, Maria started walking to her car again.
Max contemplated what he should do next. He could go after her and demand to know what was going on, although he had a pretty good idea who the idiot was, or he could take her advice and leave it alone, including helping her with chemistry. I can’t just let her fail knowing I could have done something to help. Maybe we will start with chemistry and then once she is comfortable we can work on the idiot problem. And with that thought, Max had made up his mind.
“You can’t get rid of me that easily Maria,” yelled Max across the parking lot, hoping she heard him.
Tequathisy: Thanks.
Chanks_girl: They do have a past together, but no one knows what it is but them (a mutual decision).
Mary mary: LOL. Thanks for reading. I’m going to try to update daily (or as much as I can for the time being, you never know when something will happen to draw you away for an extended time, especially being a new mom.)
Dreambeliever: Thanks.
Tequthisy: Michael is definitely in denial, but there is more to it. And, I always liked the idea of Max and Maria as friends so I wanted to have that in this story, but it is definitely something that Maria will fight at the beginning, because in her head if you are friends with Michael than you must be exactly like Michael.
Tabata: Thanks for continuing to read.
Chapter 3
Michael was hanging out in his room trying to catch up on some homework, when Max stormed in.
“What the hell did you do to Maria?” Max practically screamed at his friend.
“I didn’t do anything to Maria, how did you get in here?” Michael asked, wondering why Max all of a sudden seemed to care so much about Maria and what he may or may not have done to upset her.
“Your mom let me in, and I know you did or said something to her, not that she would tell me, but I know you had to be the idiot she was talking about,” Max stated while taking a seat at Michael’s desk.
Now Michael was really confused. Not only was Max concerned about his actions towards Maria, but it appears that Max actually talked to Maria. “Since when do you hang around with Maria?” Michael asked, trying to put pieces together in his head.
“What does it matter when I started hanging around with her, what matters here is that someone, you, said something to her to make her unMariaish.” Max said, looking at Michael in a way that dared him to negate what Max was saying.
“UnMariaish?” Since when does Max not only talk to Maria, but notice her enough to understand her personality, thought Michael.
“Yes, Michael. Maria is usually so over the top and sunny, and today after school she seemed so, cloudy.” Max said, sounding a little upset at himself at the dismal description of Maria.
“Are you describing Maria in terms of the weather? I would say she is like a hurricane, raging hormones and all.” Does Max have a thing for Maria, he seems to have put a lot of thought into Maria’s personality.
“Michael, can we please focus? You said something to Maria today, sometime after lunch but before last bell, what was it?” Max asked like he was speaking to a five year old.
“Umm, well there was that one comment about how someone should sew her lips shut so maybe the world could be a quieter place, and then there was the comment about how she looked like a 12 year old boy, and last but not least, my favorite, her friends are only her friends out of pity, that no one could actually spend that much time with her and not want to shoot themselves.” Michael stated so matter-of-factly that it took Max a moment to register what exactly he had said.
“You told her that her friends weren’t her friends? Why would you do that Michael? What did she ever do to you to warrant such a hateful comment?” Max couldn’t believe how cruel Michael could be, to someone who in all honestly was probably better than anyone in Roswell, even if her mom did run an alien themed gift shop.
“Listen Maxwell, I am going to say this once and one time only, Maria isn’t the innocent little girl everyone likes to paint her. Underneath those innocent eyes and baby doll face lies a mean spirited bitch. The relationship that Maria and I have was determined by her a long time ago, so before you start painting me as the horrible person and her the poor victim you should get your facts straight. You might point the finger in the opposite direction.” With each word Michael seemed to grow more and more aggravated, until he was shouting by the end of his rant. Max was so taken aback by Michael’s reaction to his questions that it took him a second to reply.
What happened between those two to make them hate each other so much thought Max. Although he was dying to ask that very thing, he knew it probably wouldn’t be smart to keep pushing Michael so he settled for a compromise, telling himself he would revisit the topic with Michael later.
“Listen Michael, I’m not going to ask what happened between you guys because I know you won’t tell me, but whatever it is, it is eating away at you guys slowly and one day you both will wake up and realize that there is nothing left. I’ll let you get back to what you were doing and I’ll see you tomorrow Michael.” With that said, Max stood and started to make his way to the door.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about Max, but I appreciate your attempt at a peace offering.” Michael couldn’t understand why his friends, mainly Max, always saw him as the bad guy, why did he always have to be the one that started something with Maria. When would they realize that just because she acted innocent, she was probably worse than him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Maria knew it was going to be one of those nights when no one walked through the museum’s doors from the moment she clocked in until the moment she clocked out. Not that she was complaining, it gave her the ability to get paid to do her homework. Just as she was locking the front doors to go home she heard someone clear their throat behind her.
“Oh my god Michael, you scared the hell out of me.” Maria exclaimed once she turned around and saw who it was.
“What are you doing lurking out here anyway? Didn’t you say enough this afternoon?” Maria started to walk away without waiting for a response from Michael, knowing she probably didn’t want to hear a word he had to say anyway.
Michael couldn’t believe her, where did she get off talking to him like that, like he was the bad guy here.
“Listen I came by here to talk to you about that. What right did you have to go run to Max? Our problems with each other are our problems and no one else’s, I thought we agreed that no one was going to find out what happened and here you are running your mouth to someone who isn’t even your friend? What, did your friends finally wake up and realize you were holding them back and you thought you would latch yourself onto Max?” Michael really didn’t mean for it to come out as mean as it had sounded, but once it was out there then there was no going back, not that he would have taken the words back if he could.
Maria stopped in her tracks the moment she heard his last statement. Okay, I can do one of two things, cry or attack, so what will it be DeLuca? Maria only had to think about her choices for a minute.
Mary mary: LOL. Thanks for reading. I’m going to try to update daily (or as much as I can for the time being, you never know when something will happen to draw you away for an extended time, especially being a new mom.)

Nibbles2: Yeah, when I saw it I laughed out loud because it was so perfect.
Valentinebaby: I wanted to write Max so he didn’t seem so self involved and stuck on Liz like he did in the show at times. I wanted him to be the person I always thought he could be but was never allowed to because of his alien status (hence the no aliens in this fic)
Earth2Mama: Michael is definitely in denial. He was just hurt over the whole situation (which will be revealed soon) and doesn’t know how to express that hurt except through smart, sarcastic comments.
Chapter 4
“Where do you get off coming to where I work to yell at me for something that didn’t even happen. I never told Max anything, he came running after me like some lost puppy after final bell to figure out a time for us to get together. He was the one that noticed I had shit on my mind, he was the one that deduced that you were the reason, he was the one that I am assuming decided to run to you about it all. I didn’t tell him a damn thing, so don’t worry that pretty little spiked head of yours, no one knows your dirty little secret.” Maria wasn’t sure what had her more upset, the fact that Michael had the audacity to call her out over something that didn’t even happen, or the fact the Michael was able to still able to hit her where it hurt. She was always waiting for the day for Liz and Alex to realize she was just holding them back. She wasn’t smart like Liz or talented like Alex, so her commonsense told her that one day they would see she was dead weight, just like her father finally saw that her and her mother were just dead weights.
“MY DIRTY LITTLE SECRET?!?!?!?! If I’m not mistaken you’re the one who has the shameful secret and I am the unlucky person that happens to be wrapped up within it, much to my disgust.” Michael couldn’t believe her, trying to turn the whole situation onto him, like it was his choice for all the shit she gave him on a daily basis. “If it were up to me you would be nothing but a blip on my radar screen while I’m stuck in this god forsaken town, but because you had to go even stupider than you already are for a moment, I am stuck with the constant reminder.” Michael hoped that would be the end of this conversation, it wasn’t working out like he had pictured. I just wanted to come her and tell her to stay away from Max, just goes to show you that Maria really is as dumb as I’ve always said, thought Michael.
“You’re right Michael, because I was stupid to think you had a heart, even for a moment.” With that final statement Maria turned to go, praying to God or whatever was up there that he wouldn’t stop her. She didn’t think she could stop herself from crying any longer than she already had.
“Stay away from Max, Maria. He doesn’t need to be tainted like I am.” Michael only said that to get a reaction out of her, so when she didn’t turn around and rip him a new one for that callous remark he knew something was wrong. He found out how wrong that comment was when moments later Maria drove by, and it looked like she was sobbing.

“Maria, we still have to come up with a tutoring schedule for chemistry.” Max said the next day at school during lunch.
“You need a tutor in chemistry? Why didn’t you ask me?” Liz asked, sounding hurt that her best friend had decided to seek help elsewhere.
“No Liz, I do not need a tutor. Mr. Randolph volunteered Max to help me pass his class so I wouldn’t have to torture him next year. And like I said Max, I don’t need your help.” The entire time Maria was talking she could feel Michael’s eyes on her, and she was worried about what that might mean.
“I just want to help Maria, and I am sure you don’t want to waste another year having Mr. Randolph badger you about anything and everything you do wrong. Just take the help Maria, you won’t be any less of a person if you do.” Max was sure it was her pride that was getting in the way of accepting his help, he had no idea that Michael had decided to talk to Maria after he left his house last night.
“Yea Maria, if you don’t pass it is either take it again next year or take it in summer school, and we all know how much you hate summer school” Alex stated.
“Fine, if it means you guys will get off my back. I have tonight off if you want to stop by so we can work out that schedule. Does that make everyone happy here? Great.” With that said Max knew he was dismissed, at least at the moment, and he didn’t want to press his luck by bringing up how upset she was yesterday after school. He had a feeling that even Alex and Liz didn’t know the extent of Michael and Maria’s feud and he didn’t want to demolish her trust even before he got it.
“Max is a nice guy Maria, he won’t let you fail” Liz stated, her admiration of Max Evans shining through.
“Why don’t you tell him you want to make out with him already Liz and get it over with. Hopefully once you do I will be able to stomach the infatuation you have over him, right now I would rather not puke up my lunch”, Maria could always count on Alex to change the subject when he knew things were starting to get to her. He never questioned though, he just looked out for her, which she appreciated.
“Why don’t you tell Isabel that you want to make out with her? And don’t say you don’t have any feelings towards Isabel besides hatred or ambivalence because I see how you get when she is around, you play the arrogant type but you can’t hide who you are Alex.” Liz and Maria talked about Alex’s hidden obsession with the ice Queen many a sleepover, to bad Alex didn’t seem to notice the obsession like they did.
“So, only two more days until Friday, I am psyched about movie night with my girls.” And with that said Maria knew it was going to be okay, because no matter what she could count on the two people in front of her. She could handle Michael, at least she hoped she could.

Chapter 5
“So, are we hanging out tonight?” Michael asked it in a way that told Max he already thought he knew the answer.
“No, I’m going over to Maria’s tonight.” Max had hoped that would have been the end of the conversation, but he also knew Michael probably wouldn’t think to end it there.
“WHAT?!?! Why would you be going over to Maria’s? I told her to stay away from you, I should have known she wouldn’t have listened.” Why is it so hard for her to follow directions, I didn’t go to the museum last night to talk to myself, thought Michael.
“Wait, you told her to stay away from me? Why would you do that?” Max couldn’t believe Michael would actually go out of his way to insult someone like that.
“Because she is no good Max, she might have Liz and Alex, and maybe even you, fooled, but I know truth about her and it is not all pixie dust and sparkles.” Michael knew this conversation was heading into dangerous ground, but he could care less. It was about time someone understood Maria like he did.
“What did she do that was so horrible? Kill your puppy? Make a sarcastic comment about your hair? I don’t see Maria being intentionally hurtful.” Max stated.
“Of course you wouldn’t think that would you, you aren’t the one she screwed over.” And with the final statement Michael decided he had had enough of the conversation. Maria thought he was a heartless bastard, and maybe he was, but he had promised her not to air their dirty laundry, and he could at least keep that promise to her. Even if it was slowly starting to kill him.

“Okay, class, today we are going to pick our partners for the biography project we will be working on the rest of the semester. To keep people on their toes and make sure everything is random we are going to draw names out of this hat. Who you pick is your partner. There will be no trading and no whining. Understood?” Mr. Kimball said by way of greeting. By the time everyone had pulled a partner’s name out of the hat Alex was already paired with Isabel and Maria was paired with Michael.
“Alright, now that we are all paired up, go sit next to your partner and get to work. I have provided you with a list of questions to get the ball rolling, it is up to each of you to write an interesting biography, complete with themes that are constant through out the individual’s life.” God I swear, Mr. Kimball has no idea how ridiculous this project really sounds, thought Alex, just as the Isabel sat down next to him.
“We aren’t friends.” Stated Isabel. She wanted to make it clear right from the start that her and Alex weren’t friends, have never been friends, and never would be friends.
“Well hello to you too. And besides, why would you think I would want to be your friend? I actually have my soul still, but thanks for the reminder.” This is going to be a long year if I have to spend it with Isabel. Why is it that the beautiful ones never have hearts?
Isabel couldn’t believe the nerve Alex had talking to her like that, “I have a soul, I just don’t waste it on people like you”, that should shut him up thought Isabel.
“No, you just waste it on Courtney and Pam, the two dumbest people on the planet.” Alex couldn’t believe she actually spent so much time with those two, they had the common sense of a gnat without the attention span.
“They are not the dumbest people on the planet, they jut care about different things from the rest of the world. Maybe if you took the time to get to know them you would see it like I do.” Isabel stated.
“You know, you’re right, they aren’t the dumbest people in the world. You are, for actually believing that crap you just spewed. We aren’t friends Isabel, I don’t have to like your friends and you don’t have to like mine. However, we are partners for this asinine project so for the next couple of months we will have to be civil to each other because unlike you, I don’t have a father who can buy my way into any school. I actually have to work for everything I achieve.” And with that Alex started to review the jumping off question that Mr. Kimball had given them, not caring that Isabel was staring, open mouthed at him or that he pretty much told the girl of his dreams to fuck off in a roundabout way.

“So Motormouth, start talking, I don’t have all day,” Michael said in way of greeting.
“Motormouth? Dear God, if I kill Michael I will actually be doing the world a favor so keep that in mind when I show up at the pearly gates.” Maria stated as if in prayer.
“Don’t worry Maria, you have done a lot worse things to get kicked out of heaven, I don’t think the big guy would look down on you for killing me, it is the other stuff you should worry about.” God why does she have to be so difficult.
“Shut it Michael, I just want to get through this stupid project so we never have to see each other again,” Maria said. God why does he have to be so difficult.
“Fine with me. What is your favorite childhood memory?” asked Michael while looking at the questions Mr. Kimball had provided.
“That’s it, no smart ass comment, no argument, no fight. Just fine with me and onto the project, who are you and what have you done with Michael?” asked Maria while touching his forehead to see if he was running a fever.
“Get off of me, unlike you I want to leave this podunk town one day and better myself. I know you aspire to be a trailer trash whore so I thought why argue when it appears you actually want to work.” Michael said with such an air of nonchalance, like he actually believed everything he was saying that Maria wasn’t able to stop the tears from appearing in her eyes like she usually is able to. As Maria was starting to gather up her things in order to leave this humiliating situation the tears went from gathering in her eyes to actually falling, and Michael chose that moment to look at her to see what she was doing.
“Maria? Maria, what are you doing? Don’t leave Maria, listen I can be a real prick” Michael wasn’t able to finish his sentence because Maria chose that moment to look him in the eyes right before she slapped him.
“Maria DeLuca, we do not tolerate violence at this school, take this slip to the principal’s office right now.” Mr. Kimball screeched, but Maria was all to happy to deal with the consequences of slapping Michael with the principal than having to stay and look at Michael and see the look of concern on his face and deal with what that concern meant.
“So, are we hanging out tonight?” Michael asked it in a way that told Max he already thought he knew the answer.
