Chapter Eleven
When everyone could see again they saw that Nicholas was on the floor and Kyle was fine, breathing heavily, the vein in his head popping, sitting upright in the chair like before.
“I’m sorry guys! I didn’t know it would take so long!” Tess’ curly blonde hair bobbed as she moved, running over to them and using her powers to free them. As Courtney and the guys came to attack them, the Max and Isabel used their powers to throw them off, effectively knocking them out.
Meanwhile Michael had picked Maria’s unconscious body up, “she’s breathing!”
“Get her out of here Michael. Guys I have an idea.” Tess said, freeing Kyle.
“You bitch!” Nicholas picked himself off the ground and leered at Tess, hand stretched, “I see you have surrendered yourself to your destiny and your king. I’m not surprised; you always were his faithful little servant.”
Max blasted him again, before he could hurt Tess.
Tess rolled her eyes, “Actually, I’ll have you know that I’ve found something more fulfilling to spend my time on then destiny.” She said, a twinkle in her eye as she put her arm around Kyle and helped him walk.
“Seriously? Whoa!” Kyle grinned, “Man, this almost makes the terrifying near death experience worth it.”
Tess used her powers to try to bring the ceiling of the basement down. Understanding her plan, Max helped- they were going to bury them in the ground. No one could get out of that. Quickly getting the job done, they ran (and limped) their way out of the tunnel and to the main foyer. Maria had awoken, and claimed she was fine. Leaning on Michael, she smiled as he gently hugged her.
“Listen, I know you guys booby-trapped this place, and there really isn’t anything here, but I think we should leave. It’s stopped raining and I’m officially sick of this damn house.” Michael grunted.
“Wait, what did you mean booby-trapped?” Max said, clearly confused.
“Long story Maxwell, Liz will tell you in the car.”
“But-”
“Max. I’m tired, I really don’t have time to listen to another explanation, and Maria looks like she’s gonna fall. So, back to the point. Are we leaving?”
“Hell yes.” Kyle grinned, “and by the way, you two-” he begun, pointing at Liz and Maria, “I’m never listening to any of your plans at all. I’m all uneven with the peace now. Unbalanced. It’s terrible. The universe made sure I got caught by that alien freak -no offence- so that I would learn a lesson and-”
Tess rolled her eyes and stood on her tiptoes and gave him a very effective silencing kiss. “Shutup.. Buddha boy. Hold on, I just have to do something.”
Walking up to Liz, she whispered in the surprised girl’s ear, “I saw a flash from Kyle while he was sleeping.. I know you didn’t do anything. I’m pretty sure you had a good reason. It’s okay, I don’t want Max, I think I found my man..” Winking at Liz, she went back to Kyle, practically skipping.
He hugged her to his waist and she giggled, taking out some keys from her pocket. “Come on, I brought your car.”
Kyle stopped following her and stood still, “Wait. You drove my car! Do you know how-”
Turning around and placing her hands on her hips she settled him with an incredulous look, “I just saved your life!”
“Oh. Right. Yeah.. I mean, sure, that’s a fair trade I guess..” Kyle mumbled accompanying Tess out the door.

Isabel couldn’t help staring at Alex on the way home. Of course, Alex couldn’t help notice. After catching her about ten times, he slowed down the van and turned around to stare at her. When she giggled he raised his eyebrows.
Accelerating again he grinned, “Isabel.. Are you okay? You didn’t hit your head or something did you? Do you think his mind powers went up in your brain and meddled around with stuff? I hope not. Because like, the hitting the head theory- that can be easily fixed, but the whole power meddling thing, I don’t know about that. At least it’s not in my power to fix that.. Max may be able to though. And-” He stopped when he realized she was just staring at him, a secret smile on her face. “Okay, I give up. What’s up?”
“Well.. I can’t believe you guys tried to fool us!”
“That’s making you giggle?”
“Well I mean, it’s so cute. You dressed up and everything..”
“Well not dressed up, I mean-”
“Alex, you had powder on your face!” Isabel burst out laughing, “No seriously, you were good. Scared me. You should try acting.”
Alex’s eyes almost bulged out of his head, “M-Me? No way. Noooo way. I prefer to be behind the camera.”
“Oh.. Well maybe you could film me sometime.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, I’ll dress up as a ghost and everything.” Isabel grinned.
“Very funny Isabel.”
He almost jumped as she leaned on his shoulder, and did jump went he felt her hand in his hair, “Umhmm.. and between takes.. we could get our relationship going.”
“Rel-Relationship?” Alex gulped, “Wow, yes, yeah totally, we should get that going, yeah..”
They both settled into silence then, a slight grin on their faces as they thought about what was to come.

Liz still hadn’t said a word to Max about what Nicholas had said. She told him about the prank that they were playing on them and then she just clammed up. They were driving home in Maria’s jetta, which is what Kyle had brought to the house the day before. He knew he had to break the silence.
“So that was some trick you guys pulled.”
“Yeah.” Liz said, refusing to look at him and instead was staring out the window.
“I mean, wow you really had me scared.”
Liz looked sorry at this, turning around she gave him an apologetic look, “Max, I’m sorry. We never meant it to go that far. It was just for fun you know? Maria thought it would be amusing if you guys got creeped out for once. Her words not mine.”
“Liz it’s okay. Besides if Alex hadn’t pretended to finish the gas and stop the van, then we would have gone to the sighting.. and I can’t imagine what they had planned for us there..”
“They’re still out there aren’t they?”
“Yes. But we’ll figure out how to deal with them..”
They smiled slightly at each other for a moment before Liz broke the gaze and returned to staring out the window. A minute ticked by. Two. Max couldn’t take it, “Liz. What was he talking about? The truth?”
“Nothing. I told you the truth.”
“Liz.” Max turned to look at her, there was something wrong about this. Her body was all tense, Liz never used to be tense around him.
“What?” She looked at him, eyes wide.
“It’s okay. You can tell me.”
“I can’t. I can’t you told me not to.. I can’t..” Liz mumbled looking down. Slowing the car to the side of the road Max stopped it. “Max, we can’t-”
“It’s okay. We’re ahead anyways. Liz I know you’re not all right. We never had secrets, what’s wrong?” Taking two fingers he tilted her chin up, staring into her eyes. She was lost. She couldn’t help it, so what if she told him? Tess did say it would be okay.. But that’s not was she was scared about. She was scared that this honestly wasn’t what was meant to be. So what if Tess decided to stay? Maybe something else would come up. Could they truly be together? I want to, she thought staring deep into his eyes.
And that was it. She came out and told him the entire story.
“Oh my god..” Max said, taking a deep breath and staring out the window.
“I didn’t know what to do. I was so.. lost.” Liz said softly, tears in her eyes.
“No, no Liz, I understand what you did.” Looking at her broken face he hugged her to his chest, “I just, I can’t believe you held on to this for so long. I’m so sorry I couldn’t have been there for you.”
Sniffing, she hugged him back, and they sat like that for several moments. For the first time in days they both felt at peace. They were finally back where they were meant to be. In each other’s arms. “I love you, you know that right?”
“Of course. I love you too. Never stopped.”
Grinning at each other, they could help sharing a kiss before they heard a honk and watched as a van drove past them. Liz giggled, “Do you suppose Alex is trying to tell us to get a room?”

"So there really are no ghosts?" Tess mused out loud.
"you know, i want to say no, but honestly while I was sneaking around the place, all manly, making scary sounds, I did actually sometimes hear scary sounds! Like that I didn't make. Man, ghosts totally exist. That place has made me sure of it..."
Tess giggled saying nothing for a while, until Kyle broke the silence again.
“I gotta say Tess, this turned out well. I knew you wanted me from the start.”
“Me? Oh no, you wanted me from the start.”
“No I- yeah okay I did. You’re hot, what can I say?”
Raising an eyebrow, she decided to tease him, “so you want me ‘cause I’m hot.”
“Well, I, um, not just because you’re hot.”
“Oh really..” she said snaking a finger down his leg.
“Yeah, uh..” Kyle gulped, how was he supposed to drive with her doing that?
Giggling she took back her hand, “I know. Besides,” she came close to his ear and whispered, “I like you ‘cause you’re hot too.”
“Oh, we are SO seriously doing some lamp-trimming when we get home.” Kyle said, giving her a flirtatious wink.
Making sure he had enough space to drive the car, Tess held on to his arm and giggled, “I wonder what your dad will say about this..”
“Oh man he’s going to freak!”
Their laughter followed them all the way back to Roswell.

“I want ice-cream.”
“Maria, you’re up again!” Michael smiled, leaning over to brush her hair off her face.
“Um hmm.. it’s hot, my head aches like something tore it off my head, jiggled it around and put it back and now I want ice-cream.” She said, opening one eye to look at him expectantly. They were at the back of the van, while Alex and Isabel were at the front.
“You can’t have ice-cream baby.” Michael said sweetly. He was determined to be extra nice to her, since he knew she was in pain right now.
“Why not? I was mind-abducted! I should get what I want!” Maria threw her hands up in the air, scoffing.
“Well first of all, because there is no where I can tell Alex to stop to get it. There’s only sand out there. And second of all, ice-cream will definitely give you a brain freeze and hurt your head eve more.”
“It might not!” She said, knowing she was being childish, but her head was spinning too much to care.
“It will.”
“Will not”
“Will too..”
“Will not”
“Maria!”
“Michaeeel.”
Rolling his eyes and trying hard not to smile Michael lay down on the seat next to Maria. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, it just hurts a bit. It was weird y’know? I felt him inside my head. Inside my thoughts. Thankgod he’s dead or I would feel really jumpy about that.”
“You’re jumpy anyways.” She lightly smacked his shoulder as he went on, “That was really quick thinking what you did, even though it didn’t completely work, it saved us time... My Maria. You’re one brave little soldier you know that?”
Giggling, Maria looked down at his face, where it lay near is stomach, “Oh yeah, plus I can kickass and I’m hot too.”
“The whole package, huh?”
“You know it!”
Kissing her forehead he lay back on her stomach, “Your head better get well soon, we’ve got some pending business to complete. Remember? Before you oh so subtly shoved me off the bed?”
“Mm, someone’s horny.. and I didn’t shove you.”
“I always am with you..” and then he snorted, carrying on, “and yes you did. It was all part of your plan.”
“It was not, but if you don’t believe me then maybe we’ll see a repeat of yesterday night, tonight..”
“You wouldn’t..”
“Oh I would. Don’t you te-”
“Guys! We love you. But seriously shutup.” Isabel droned from the front seat.
Sharing a grin, Michael and Maria settled back against each other and shut their eyes. There would be a lot of time for fighting later. Fighting, Michael and ice-cream, my three favourite things, Maria thought mischievously.

Ever since then, Alex’s grandfather always wondered why there was a depression in the ground a mile away from his house. It seemed like the ground had just given in, but what were the chances of that happening?
