Chapter 11
The Crashdown
“So how long does the Crash have to stay closed?” Alex asked me as he watched me tape up a sign that said “Closed Until Further Notice”.
“Until Max says it’s okay, I guess.” I answer honestly, not really knowing when.
“Where is the father-to-be?” Alex asks.
Before I even turn around I could picture him grinning ear-to-ear and when I do, I can’t help but smile when I see I’m right.
“Uh, he’s upstairs with Kyle.” I answer and move to sit beside him on the booth and rest my head on his shoulder.
“So what’s wrong?” Alex asks as he entwines my fingers with his and rests his cheek against the top of my head.
“Everything.” I sigh deeply and then rest my head on the table, looking to Alex to see him look back at me in confusion. “How did our lives get so…”
“Transcendental?” Alex added with a grin.
“Chaotic.” I correct rolling my eyes at his point blank sarcasm.
“I guess that’s the life we chose by being involved with aliens.” Alex replied with a shrug. That was the most expected answer, but somehow, I was hoping for something else.
“But, God, I mean…” Not really knowing where to begin, I run my hand through my hair in frustration and then exhale loudly as I feel Alex rub my shoulder for support. “It’s just, look at everything that’s happened since Max and me started dating…I mean can you just imagine what’s to come by me being the mother of an alien King’s child.” I ask rhetorically, arching both my eyebrows to show how overwhelmed I was.
“Yeah, I guess I can understand your panic.” Alex answered as he shook his head, focusing at the small patterns of the table top.
All the worry over me, I had completely forgotten about Alex, who was just as big as a target as I am. Max is King, but Isabel is a Princess, property of Khivar in Antarian eyes, and now that Khivar’s dead...who knows if his followers will blame his death on Alex.
And Maria…Maria was just as deep as Alex and me. Even though Michael wasn’t Antarian Royalty, he still had worshipers, Skin worshipers that might not think to highly of Maria because one, she’s human, and two, because they might assume that she’s the reason why Michael doesn’t obtain the throne…staying on Earth to be with her.
Again, I repeat, how did our lives get so chaotic.
“How long do you think I have until Tess finds out about the baby?” I ask out of the blue, staring at the table top as well, moving my head back and forth lightly.
“What?”
“How long?” I repeat and then look at him struggle to think of an answer. “She’s bound to know, so how long do I have to enjoy the fact that I’m having Max’s baby before I have to worry about protecting him or her? How long do I have to worry about baby shower plans or what diaper brand I’m gonna use before I have to worry about which pissed off alien is coming to hurt us? How long? Cause I sure don’t so maybe you can tell me. Huh, Alex? How long?” I ask, soon finding myself in tears and crying against Alex’s chest as he held me close.
“I don’t know Liz. But we don’t know even know the answer to even the human problems either. We just have to go about things one day at a time. Seize each day because tomorrow isn’t promised to any of us.” Alex answered as he brushed my hair back trying to sooth me so I could stop crying.
“It should be.” I answer as I pull away and wipe my tears. “I should be promised to wake up every morning next to the man I love. To hear my best friend and and her boyfriend arguing or you playing your guitar while Isabel plays CD’s with her powers, trying to drown out Kyle from his chanting mediation. Is it wrong to want that?”
“All except me playing my guitar.” Alex answered with a huge cocky smile. “No one should be deprived of that.”
“You’re so full of yourself.” I giggle with a sniffle as I shove him lightly with my arm and then it dawned on me. “Hey, Alex. What do you think about you guys eating dinner with us?” I ask with a sparkle in my eye and a smile of hope stretched across my face.
“Yeah, sure. It’s not like Isabel was going to cook anything tonight.” Alex chuckled as he nodded his head “yes” and “no”.
“No, I mean every night.” I correct, seeing him arch an eyebrow and look at me even more confused. “I mean, the only tradition we have in this group is date an alien. It’ll be nice to start some traditions of our own, something that my baby can grow up to.”
“Yeah, sure. Why not?” Alex nodded with a smile.
“Great. I’ll go tell the others.” I announce as I slide out from behind the table but then turn to look at Alex who was sliding out as well. “Are you finished down here?” I asked, forgetting the main reason why he had stayed behind while everyone else went upstairs.
“Yeah, camera’s are set and we can order ADT or something.” He suggested snapping his fingers and then pointed at me without meaning.
“Um, I don’t think ADT is equipped for alien break-in’s.” I answer skeptically as we move to the back of the restaurant, thinking of all the times Max, Isabel, and Michael have come across something with security.
“Right, well, we better find something and then test it out on Michael.” Alex commented a he wiggled his eyebrows, making me laugh out loud and then shut off the lights as we headed upstairs.
Upstairs
“Hey, Gidget.” Maria greeted, cuddled up next to Michael on the couch, when she saw me enter the door.
“Hey.” I greet and look around the room curiously wondering where Max was, but then assumed he must’ve been in our room .
“What am I? Chopped liver?” Alex asked playfully as he went over to the kitchen to kiss Isabel hello, who was fixing herself a cup of tea.
“Oh, I’m sorry. My little musical muse.” Maria teased in baby talk, as she hugged him and Eskimo kissed him. “Precioso flacito.” She teased in Spanish as she squeezed his cheeks, making us all laugh when we hear him squirm. I move to the hall’s closet and start digging through my mom’s memory boxes of me when I was a baby. Opening a shoe box that had flowers on the lid, I gasp at the most adorable sight. A tiny white cotton sock that fit delicately in the palm of my hand. This is what I have to look forward to. This is what I want to worry about. Not Tess or this pendant around my neck.
“Ugh!” Kyle yawned as he came out of the main bathroom rubbing his stomach, breaking my motherhood thoughts by his maleness. “I feel ten pounds lighter.” He announced, making me scrunch up my nose in disgust as everyone else mumbled their opinions.
“And it’s still a mystery why he doesn’t have a girlfriend.” Michael sarcastically murmured to Maria.
“Are you to done already?” I ask him surprised and relieved, planning some one-on-one celebration time with Max.
“What do you mean?” Kyle asked looking at me with his head to the side.
“Max? Meditation? Ring a bell?” I ask rotating my hands to remind him.
“Uh, we finished like ten minutes ago.” Kyle replied looking at me like I was crazy.
“Really?” I ask surprised, wondering why nobody mentioned it and then go to my room.
Liz’s Room
When I open the door, I find a duffel bag on the bed and then Max coming out with a handful of clothes, tossing them in the bed and folding them neatly before placing them inside the bag.
Stepping into the room and closing the door behind me. For the way my heart was pounding and the way I was holding my baby sock tightly in my hand I could already tell this was a discussion I was going to end up crying in. But no! The weak Liz is gone. The new Liz developed leather skin. Defended myself and my friends when the strongest members of our group left. I can’t go back to weak Liz just because Max is back. Just breathe and ask him what’s going on.
“Max?” I call out, seeing him pause for a moment to inhale before he start rummaging through the dresser drawers, without answering me. “Um, Max, wha-what’s going on?” I ask moving behind him, he stands up about to run into me, but dodges me and drops the arm full of socks into the bag. “Max?” I repeat, staring at his back and lowered head. When I move to sit on the bed, I watch observantly his dark expression as he traced the teeth of the zipper from the suitcase and then finally looked at him. “Max?” I repeat, rubbing the top part of the baby sock nervously with my thumb.
“I’m packing.” He answered softly and then sat in front of me with his back facing me.
“Why?” I ask, turning so my feet are on the bed and tucked underneath me.
“Liz, leaving is the only way…”
“The only way what?” I answer, knowing he can hear my voice cracking.
“The only way you’ll be safe.” He finished. I push the duffel bag off the bed, watching all my clothes spill out of the bag, and then move to his side to see him look away from me. “You’re not safe with me…and the only way you can be…you and the baby…is if I give you up.” Max confessed with a shaky voice. “I have to give you up.”
