“You ready?” Max asked Liz as they pulled up out the front of the restaurant that Dave Harrison was having his dinner party at.
“Yep,” Liz smiled.
The driver opened the car for Max and then he held his hand out for Liz who held onto it tightly as they walked through the front doors of the restaurant.
There were at least 15 people standing around the bar and most of them Liz and Max both recognised as the normal attendees of these types of things.
“Max, Liz,” Dave smiled as he saw them.
He kissed Liz and admired her, “You’re glowing,” he told her.
Liz blushed and Max smiled proudly at his observation. “Congratulations,” he told her.
His wife Larissa joined them then and also congratulated them both on the pregnancy. Liz’s pregnancy was obvious to the casual observer now, her dress fitting snugly over the small bump.
“Thank you,” Liz told them both.
“Liz, would you mind if I stole Max away for a few minutes to meet someone?” Dave asked then.
“Of course not,” Liz replied knowing it would be useless if she did mind. She made small talk with Larissa for a few minutes before she excused herself to visit the bathroom.
When she emerged, the first thing she noticed was that Tess had arrived. Liz watched as the blonde spotted Max and immediately made a beeline towards him. With a shake of her head, she walked to the bar and ordered an orange juice for herself and a beer for Max.
***
Tess knew she was running a little late as she stepped into the restaurant but it took time to look as good as she did in her black cocktail dress. Hopefully the short, tight black dress would finally get Max to notice her. Everyone else appeared to have already arrived, including Max, and even better, she couldn’t see anyone attached to his arm. She wondered then briefly where Liz was, and was glad that she wouldn’t be around to get in way. Tess had plans for Max tonight and she wasn’t going to let Liz get in the way of them.
“Hi Max,” she grinned as she approached.
Max looked away from the group of men he was talking to. “Good evening Tess,” he replied. “Gentleman this is Tess Harding, she’s new,” he explained.
Tess nodded in greeting but wasn’t really interested in the people standing in front of her except Max.
Max continued talking to the men in front of him ignoring Tess’s presence as she stood next to him. Eventually Tess was tired of listing to the boring talk about business and law so she decided to check out the seating arrangement for that night. She needed to sit next to Max so if she had to do a bit of rearranging she would.
When Tess reached the table she spotted Max’s name card, and Liz’s next to it so discreetly as she could she picked up Liz’s and continued around the table until she found her own at the other end, and replaced it with Liz’s. She then returned and placed her name next to Max’s. It wouldn’t matter if Liz wasn’t there.
When it was time to be seated for dinner Larissa Harrison tapped politely on her champagne glass to get everyone’s attention.
“Entrée’s will be served if you would all like to take your seat,” she advised.
Max immediately scanned the room for Liz and smiled when he found her approaching with two glasses in her hands. He hurried towards her and took the beer out of her hands and replaced it with his hand instead as he led her towards the table.
“You didn’t have to get these, I was headed that way,” he smiled.
“Those men were never going to stop talking, we both know that,” she whispered with a grin and Max chuckled.
“You’re right,” he agreed.
Liz had been to enough of Max’s dinner parties and work functions to know that the nights were famously boring and generally consisted of talk about work.
When Tess saw Max approaching her she smiled, “Max over here,” she grinned not seeing Liz by his side.
“You’re sitting next to me,” she smiled as he got closer but her smile soon faltered when she caught sight of Liz.
“Hello Tess,” Liz smiled politely.
“Liz, hi,” Tess replied.
Max frowned as he looked down at the name tags on the seats near Tess. His name was there but Liz’s wasn’t.
“I’m sure there is just a misunderstanding,” Liz said when she also realised what Max was frowning about. Unlike Max though Liz had a pretty good idea who had caused the misunderstanding and looked pointedly at Tess.
“I’ll go talk to Larissa and get it sorted out,” Max said.
“Or Tess could just move,” Liz said bluntly.
Tess’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water as Max and Liz both looked at her.
Larissa Harrison approached then, “Is there a problem?” She asked worried.
“We’re missing a seat,” Max replied.
Larissa frowned as she looked down at the table places. She knew for a fact that Liz had been seated next to Max and that Tess had been seated at the other end. She had done the table arrangements herself.
“That’s not right,” she frowned and walked off to locate where Liz's name place was, already knowing where she would find it.
“Oh looks like your seat is over there,” Tess said as Larissa stopped.
Larissa walked back with a frown. “I’m not sure how this happened Max, I’m so sorry,” she apologised.
“That’s fine is there a spare seat down there, or someone I can swap with? I would like to sit with Liz,” he told her.
Larissa shifted nervously knowing there wasn’t.
Max sighed,
“It’s fine Max,” Liz whispered not wanting to embarrass Larissa when she knew it wasn’t her fault.
“No its not.” Max replied sternly. He looked down at Tess then, “Tess would you mind moving please?” He said then.
“What?” Tess coughed not sure she heard Max right, surely he wasn’t asking her to move.
“I would like to sit with Liz, and since you’re here by yourself I’m sure you won’t mind taking the single seat,” he explained.
His face was expectant and Tess knew there was no way she could say no, “I’d rather stay here,” she tried.
“Obviously,” Liz mumbled but Tess and Larissa both heard her.
“Please Tess,” Max stressed.
“Ok,” she finally replied and stood up.
“Take your place card with you,” Liz added for good measure.
It wasn’t until Tess was standing that she got a good look at Liz and the gasp she emitted when her eyes grazed Liz’s abdomen was priceless. Liz couldn’t help but smile.
“She’s…she’s….she’s,” she kept repeating as she pointed at Liz’s stomach.
“Tess, you’re causing a scene,” Max snapped as Tess continued to gape at Liz bringing attention to her.
“Yes I’m pregnant,” Liz finally finished for her. “Now please stop pointing and staring,” she snapped.
Liz stepped around Tess then and Max held out her seat for her so she could take a seat and then sat down beside her, both ignoring Tess who had only just pulled herself together.
“I’m sorry about all this,” Max leaned in and whispered, his lips grazing her ear.
Liz turned and smiled, “Its ok. I know it’s not your fault and everything has been worked out,” she whispered back.
They continued to gaze at each other then, lost in each other’s eyes until a waiter appeared and placed a dish in front of them.
“Thank you,” Liz said politely.
“Liz I couldn’t help but notice you’re expecting, congratulations,” John Ryan, who was seated across from them offered as they all began eating.
John was a regular to the dinner parties and was one of the few that Liz actually enjoyed talking to. His wife was a nurse, so often she couldn’t attend but he enjoyed talking to Liz about her work.
“Thank you,” Liz smiled.
“How far along are you if you don’t mind me asking?” He wasn’t sure if Max was the father, so John had decided to tread carefully. There’s was the only conversation at the table and everyone was listening.
“I’m just finishing my third month,” Liz smiled.
“Wow,” he said, “you’re showing a lot for three months.”
Max chuckled, “Don’t tell her that John she’s already paranoid enough that she’s getting fat.”
“Sorry,” John replied.
Liz rolled her eyes, at Max. “We’re having twins,” Max told him then with a proud smile.
“Twins? Congratulations you two are certainly going to have your hands full in several months,” he laughed.
“Yeah we know,” Liz smiled.
On the other end of the table, Tess was doing her best to hide her shock. How had no one at the office known that Max and Liz were together? And now Liz was pregnant. Inside she was fuming.
Liz couldn’t help but cast a glance Tess’s way and when she saw the scowl on her face, she grinned briefly before shooting Tess a look that clearly told the blonde, “Stay away, he’s mine.”

“Hmm Max,” Liz moaned as Max kissed a trail down her neck. His hands cupped her breasts and he rolled her nipples between his fingers.
They had barely made it in the door after the dinner party before they were tearing each other’s clothes off. The foreplay had begun in the hire car. Liz was caressing Max through this dress pants while they made out like high school students in the back seat.
“You looked so beautiful and sexy tonight,” Max whispered huskily.
“Don’t stop Max,” Liz begged.
“Lets lie down,” Max suggested as he pulled Liz towards his king size bed.
He sat Liz down on the edge and removed her stockings and shoes before kneeling in between her legs. He took one breast into his mouth then, and sucked on the nipple until it was hard before he moved on to the next.
“Max,” she cried.
“God Liz I can’t get enough of you,” Max admitted as he pushed her back on the bed and climbed on top of her.
There was so much he wanted to say to her but he could tell from the look on Liz’s face that she was in a cloud of sexual fog and wouldn’t remember his words.
Max inched inside of her slowly, a groan breaking free from his lips. “You feel so good,” he whispered as he pulled out and thrust back inside of her.
“Yes Max, so good,” Liz moaned.
Their love making was passionate and it didn’t take long before they came apart in each others arms.
Max collapsed onto the bed next to Liz and pulled the sheets up over their quickly cooling bodies.
“That was amazing,” Liz whispered tiredly.
Max smiled as he wrapped an arm around her, pulling her body close against his. He didn’t want to loose the skin to skin contact that they had. He could see Liz’s eyes were already closing as he nuzzled his nose against the side of her face.
“I love you,” he whispered knowing that she wouldn’t hear his words but needing to say them all the same.
“I’m in love with you, Liz Parker,” he said again and smiled liking the way the words sounded coming from his mouth. “Wow that sounds weird but it feels really good,” he chuckles.
His hand moved down to her abdomen then, “I know you can’t hear me little ones but daddy can’t wait to meet you, I love you both and your mummy so much.”
As Max lay down and closed his own eyes, next to him, a tired Liz opened hers and a smile lit up her face.
