I looked it up once and the Cerebral cortex also controls quite a lot of function in the brain -- including complex motor controls and initiating voluntary movement. That would explain why it also made it hard for Max to walk.
It also controls speech and language, but it appears that Peirce's serum didn't affect that part so much.

I was wondering if the show ever mentioned what Jim's wife's name was and what it is. Also was it mentioned why she left? I know there was a line where Jim mentioned the marriage to his wife in Season 3 when Max 'healed' Clayton (?) but that could have been him being sarcastic in the moment. Thanks.
