Trying to get my mind off of a huge research paper that I've known about for three months and have yet to start, which is due TUESDAY, I wrote this. Just some fluff that was fun to write, inspired by my very own kitty cat, whose name just so happens to be Max. Enjoy. And... I own nothing Roswell related.
The Mission
It was dark in her room, and the clock on her nightstand read an unthinkable hour. She needed to get this done, and tonight. There was no other way.
Working in bed and typing on her laptop in-between biting her nails in frustration, she frantically continued her instant messaging. Before she could send her reply, a new message was posted.
“I swear to God, Liz. If this isn’t perfect, I’m going to kill you!”
She gulped.
They had been working on this for months now, and she was so close to getting it completed without him knowing. It was imperative that he didn’t find out, or else their plans would be ruined.
She knew that the person whom she was corresponding with was someone to be frightened of, and she didn’t even entertain the thought of letting the person down. She knew what needed to be done, and no matter what obstacles she faced, it would be finished in time.
Suddenly, there was a loud crash, and she nearly dropped her laptop off of the bed. Frightened, she let out a shriek.
“Oh my god!”
Her cry was answered by a soft and frightened reply. She rolled her eyes as she realized who had caused the disturbance.
“Max? What the hell do you think you’re doing?”
Staring her back in the face, he made no noise.
She grinned at him. “Get over here, silly.”
Running from his spot in her closet, he jumped on the bed and headed straight toward her. Rubbing against her laptop as he made his way across the bed, he let out a purr of delight.
“What were you doing in there?” She questioned lovingly as she scratched behind his ears. “You could have got locked in there.”
As she focused herself back on the task at hand, her beloved feline began to chew at the chord connecting her notebook to the wall. Swatting at him, she couldn’t help but grin at the similarities between the two of them. ‘Like father, like son. You can’t let mom get anything done without distraction.’
Trying to regain her focus, she heard the front door swing open and his call to her was clear. “Honey, sorry I’m late, but I was stuck at the office.”
She ignored him and turned to her notebook in dismay. He was home! If he saw what she was doing, he would go completely crazy with rage! But, she needed to get this completed, or else she faced even more severe consequences on the other end. As scary as her husband could be, she had been wrapped up in a scheme that she had no control over, and if she did not deliver the finished product, she would surely pay for it in the worst way.
Beside her, her cell phone began to ring. Picking it up as quickly as possible, she barked into the receiver as quietly as possible.
“What do you want from me? I’m trying to finish!”
The reply on the other end was anything but sympathetic. “Don’t give me that, Liz. You’ve had plenty of time to complete your end of the deal. You said that you were able to get this done, that you knew all of the information necessary to complete the task. Well, the clock is ticking.”
The line went dead. And, at the exact same moment, her husband waltzed into their bedroom, looking tired and ready for a good nights rest.
“What are you doing? It’s so late! You’re working too hard lately, Liz. It’s going to catch up with you.” He stepped toward her as he began to undress.
She froze. ‘What now!’
Noticing their cat on the bed, he was momentarily distracted as he greeted Max Jr. with affection. “Hey buddy? Keeping momma safe?”
The cat meowed in reply, closing his eyes in bliss from the scratching he was receiving. Liz scrambled to appear normal, minimizing all windows that might give him a clue as to what she was working on.
But, unfortunately for Liz, she had forgotten one. And as her husband leaned over to give her a kiss, his eyes couldn’t help but stray to the screen. And as soon as they did, his expression went stern, and he backed away without a kiss.
Shutting her eyes in frustration and throwing her head back against the wall, she knew she was found out. The only thing she could do now was explain everything and hope that he would protect her from the wrath she would face when they knew that she had been caught.
“You have some explaining to do, Missy.”
She nodded her head mutely, and pleaded with her eyes for forgiveness. With a sigh, she began.
“I didn’t have a choice! She made me do it! I know that we weren’t supposed to, but we couldn’t help ourselves.” Pausing for a moment, she looked up at him hopefully. “Are you mad?”
Scratching at his eyebrow and settling himself on the bed next to her, he didn’t offer up much as to how he was feeling. “You had better call her and let her know that your mission has been compromised. I can’t pretend to know what is going to happen to you when she finds out.” He teased.
Gulping, she knew that he was right. Reaching for her phone, she saw him shake his head as he shut his eyes, looking exhausted. It was all out in the open now. She could only hope that he would forgive her for her mistakes.
The line rang for a moment before being answered. “Hello? Are you finished?”
Pausing for a moment, she answered. “He knows. He found out. I didn’t mean for this to happen! I’m sorry!”
The screeching heard on the other line was loud enough for even Max Jr. to hear. It woke him from a catnap he had begun to take, and his ears perked up. He looked irritable for the disturbance. The two humans on the bed could only cringe.
Before their conversation could progress any more, Max put his hand out in front of her. His palm up, he motioned for her to give him the phone. He would attempt to take care of the situation. She was grateful for the help.
“He wants to speak with you.”
The woman on the other line only sighed. “Put him on.”
She handed him the phone, and he cleared his throat before speaking.
“Isabel Whitman! You are in big trouble!”
She attempted to explain herself. “Maxwell, it is your 30th birthday, how do you expect your loving sister and wife not to plan you a party? You’re in your prime, you need to celebrate!”
There was a moment’s pause.
Chuckling into the phone, he rubbed at his temples tiredly. “I suppose that this is partly my fault, too. I should have known what I was up against.”
“Exactly!” His sister returned.
“I’ll talk to you later, Izzy. And I’ll make sure that Liz gets the restaurant booked and the birthday cake ordered. Happy?”
Sounding triumphant on the other end, she replied. “Very. And you tell that skinny little wife of yours that if the inscription on the cake isn’t exactly what we discussed, there will be hell to pay!”
“Goodnight, Isabel.”
“Goodnight, Max.”
Tossing the phone across the bed, he slung an arm around his wife’s shoulder. “So, you aren’t mad?”
Smiling slightly, he shrugged. “No. But, as your punishment, you have to finish dealing with Isabel. And, with no help from me.”
She began to whine. “What! That isn’t fair, she is completely unreasonable! I don’t know what I got myself into with her, I mean sh---.” Interrupting her with a kiss, he rested his forehead on hers.
“I love you, you know that?”
“Yes, I do. And I love you, too.”
Just then, sensing the tender moment, Max Jr. barged into the scene by jumping on the laptop’s keyboard with a meow.
“And we both love you, little one.”
