Sunder (AU, CC, Teen) Part 19 (9/21/08) (WIP)

Post by Icalynn »

Title: Sunder
Author: Icalynn
Disclaimer: This fiction is in no way affiliated with the WB, UPN, Melinda Metz, Jason Katims, "Roswell" the television series, or any of the actors of that series. The author makes no claim to any of the characters portrayed herein, and claims no remuneration for this work. This fic is for entertainment purposes only.
Pairings/Couples/Category: CC, AU
Rating: Teen
Summary: Max and Liz are together, the FBI is finally off their backs, Nasedo is at their side as their protector, and Valenti has become one of their most trusted allies. Everything should be perfect, but everything starts to unravel as dreams begin to haunt Max's nights. An AUverse where Tess has not come to Roswell as originally written, in fact she's still remains in her pod. The story takes place the summer after season one.

Author's note: This is my first Dreamer centered fic, so I hope I do them justice. There will be heavy Max/Tess undertones, but they won't actually be a couple- more of it will be based on their past. With Kyle and Tess becoming a couple in the end. So mainly M/L, K/T.

~

Max woke up with a start, his body covered in a film of sweat. He gasped for breath unable to calm his nerves as the tendrils of his dream continued to haunt him. It was the same dream that plagued him night after night- and all he could remember upon awakening was the intense feeling of being abandon, the sense of loss was overwhelming.

He sat up, suddenly needing to check on his sister. Max crept slowly into the hallway and crossed over to Isabel's room. He took a deep breath and looked in on her, relieved to see that she was sleeping peacefully. He closed the door quickly, but something still felt off. Someone he loved wasn't safe.

Max briefly considered if Michael was okay, but quickly determined that he would be able to handle himself. It had long passed that Hank was a threat and Michael's late night visits were a thing of the past. He paused, his mind racing with only one last option. There was only one person in his life that he loved that was not accounted for.

Liz.

Max darted back to his room and changed into a pair of jeans and tee, taking off into the directions of Liz's house before he could even think of sleeping for the night. He had to see Liz- he had to make sure she was okay. His pulse skipped a beat as he neared the Crashdown and he quickly made his way up the ladder and onto her balcony.

"Liz," he called out, tapping on her window.

She looked up at him in a sleepy daze, her eyes clearing as she spied him at her window. "Max?" She questioned as she slowly made her way to the window and opened it. "Max," she drawled as she glanced at her bedside clock and frowned. "What's wrong?" She questioned, reaching out to him, clasping her hand with his.

He sighed, suddenly feeling foolish. "I just had to see that you were okay," Max whispered as he squeezed her hand and helped her out onto the balcony. He sat back against the wall and pulled her into his arms. She settled easily into his arms, her back pressed against his chest, his arms wrapping around her protectively. They sat there together, just enjoying each other's presence under the stars.

"The dream again?" She asked after a short pause, tilting her head to the side, gazing up at him.

"Yeah," he sighed, closing his eyes briefly. "If only I could remember-"

"You need to talk to Isabel about this, she can dreamwalk you," Liz began as she brushed her lips against his neck. "Maybe she can unlock whatever it is that seems to-"

"I can't ask her to do that," Max groaned as he shook his head. "She has enough going on with Michael and Alex, her dreams-"

"She's your sister," she stressed. "She would want to help you with this-"

"That's what I'm afraid of Liz," he whispered. "I don't want her to be plagued by these dreams too. Whatever it is- I keep thinking someone I love is hurting."

Liz sighed, her brow knitted in concentration. "Is there someone else out there?" She suddenly asked as she turned more to him. "Max, what if there's another hybrid out there-"

"Nasedo would have mentioned it if there was." Max quickly refuted, but he doubted the sincerity of his words.

"Would he?" Liz prompted. "He's been so cryptic and I always get the feeling's he's up to something."

"I don't know," he sighed, shaking his head. "I just don't know."

"He comes out of nowhere, pretends to be you, kidnaps me, practically hands you over to the special unit, inadvertently brings both Valenti and Kyle into it, and-"

"He saved us," Max whispered, threading his fingers through hers. "He's taking down the special unit as we speak-"

"I know," Liz sighed. "But, he's not told you one thing that you need to know- like, where you came from? How did you get here? And if you did crash in the summer of '47, then why are you teenagers? "

"He will," he insisted. "He just needs to take care of business first."

Liz forced a smile to her face, hoping that's all it was. "I hope so."

Max nodded, kissing her softly. "I should be going," he stated after a short pause. "I just needed-"

"I know," she smiled as she returned the kiss. "See you later? I have a double shift- the morning and lunch crowd."

"Yeah," he nodded as they stood up and he hugged her briefly. "I'll drop in for the special."

Liz laughed. "I hope that's not all."

"Well, there's this really pretty waitress," he teased lightly, feeling the weight lift off of his chest momentarily. "I think she has the hots for me."

"Is that so?" She grinned. "I'll have to tell my dad to fire her."

Max laughed, leaning in and kissing her before he pulled away. "Sweet dreams."

"Sweet dreams," she smiled as she offered him a wave and he quickly made his way down. She sighed, hoping for the rest of the night he could sleep. "Night."

The diner was nearly empty as Liz busied herself by cleaning the counter, glancing between the two men in her lives. They both held a place in her heart and she wanted only the best for them.
Max had come in an hour earlier, just as he said he would and Kyle had remained in the same spot for the last few hours, seemingly lost in thought. Just like she was after being healed, she turned to Max and reached for his hand.

"Hey," Max began as he noticed the sadness in her eyes. "What's wrong?"

Liz shrugged. "Nothing really," she offered, her gaze drifting over to Kyle's booth. "I'm just worried about Kyle." She paused as she turned her gaze to Max. "You should talk to him," Liz suggested as she ran her fingers over Max's.

"He doesn't even like me," Max mumbled, glancing over his shoulder to see Kyle in the corner booth, oblivious to their conversation about him. "What can I say that would even help?"

"He's looking for answers," she prompted as she turned her gaze to Kyle. "His world has been turned upside down- just talk to him."

Max sighed, standing up from the bar stool. "If he-"

"Max." Liz stressed, squeezing his hand. "Just ask him how he is- give him a chance to open up to you."

Max nodded, squeezing her hand briefly before he crossed over to the booth where Kyle was sitting alone, nursing the same glass of cherry coke for the last few hours. "Hey."

Kyle glanced up, his eyes widening slightly before he turned his gaze to Liz standing at the counter, watching the two of them carefully. "Hey," he replied, returning his gaze back to the table.

They both sat there in silence, neither one knowing what to say. "You don't have to babysit me," Kyle drawled as he glanced up at Max. "I won't say anything-"

"Kyle," Max sighed. "I know."

"I get it," he whispered, shaking his head. "My father's job is on the line- your life, the others. I get it."

Max nodded, his lip curling up in a smile. "Thanks."

"Yeah," Kyle shrugged as he got up to leave. "But, don't think I have to be all happy go lucky because you saved my life." He stated harshly, slamming his fist against the table. "The reason I almost died was because of you and your unearthly origins." He hissed as Max grabbed his wrist.

"I will protect my family," Max countered as Kyle stared at him and then at the hand on his wrist.

"So, will I." Kyle hissed as he grabbed at Max's hand to push him away, but froze as his fingers made contact with Max's.

It was like time had stopped and in a flash of light a connection was formed. The images came in quick flashes, both unable to stop them as they flooded their senses. It ended as quickly as it started, leaving them gasping for air.

Kyle stumbled back, his eyes wide as he stared at Max in complete shock. He closed his eyes as he slumped back into the booth, the images burning in his memory. "What the fuck was that?" He questioned as Max simply stared at him in shock.

"Sometimes we get flashes," Max replied, unable to explain it more as he tried to figure out the meaning behind it.

Kyle exhaled slowly, taking in a deep breath, trying to process the images he just saw. "Is it always that intense?" He whispered after a slight pause. "Who was she?" He found himself asking as the images continued to flash before his eyes. "And why were you at the cliffs?"

"My wife," Max found himself replying, his words shocking both of them.

Kyle's mouth dropped open and he stared blankly at him. "Fuck, Evans. You're married?" Kyle practically shouted as Max shushed him, quickly looking back to see Liz taking an order from a costumer, seemingly unfazed by his outburst. Kyle followed his gaze and gasped in outrage. "How can you be married and be with Liz?" He hissed.

"I didn't remember," Max countered quickly. "Not until those flashes- it's in the past. A lifetime ago."

Kyle considered his words and then glanced over at Liz. "Then why are you suddenly thinking of her?" He whispered harshly. "You have a girlfriend!"

Max flushed, not able to explain why he was dreaming about her or why Kyle, of all people, received the flashes. "I don't know."

"Has Liz seen these-" Kyle paused, staring at him for a second as he tried to recall what Max had called them earlier. "Flashes?"

"No," he quickly denied, not knowing how he would even explain the sudden images and emotions that came with them.

Kyle rubbed the back of his neck in silent contemplation, briefly glancing up at Liz and then returned his gaze to Max. "So, this so called wife of yours," he stage whispered. "Is hot."

"Kyle!" Max hissed, shocked at the sudden intense emotion he felt to protect her honor.

Kyle just stared at him, rolling his eyes. "So, tell me." He began. "Why the hell are you picturing her at the cliffs?"

Max shrugged, "I don't know."

"What the fuck do you know, Evans?" He groaned as Liz suddenly appeared at their side and they both sat up a little straighter, their conversation coming to a grounding halt.

"Everything okay?" She questioned as she studied them briefly.

"Yeah," Kyle nodded, standing. "In fact, we're gonna go out to the cliffs."

Liz face brightened with a smile as she turned to Max. "Oh, that's great Max."

"Yeah," Max replied, suddenly unsure of Kyle's intentions, but Liz was happy that they were making some sort of progress. "We won't be long."

Liz shook her head. "Don't worry about the time," she smiled. "I still have another four hours to go, and you two need to strengthen-"

"Our human- not so human friendship," Kyle added quickly as he slapped his hand down on Max's shoulder.

"Yeah," Max nodded as Liz leaned up and kissed him briefly before turning back to the customers.

"Have fun," she called out as they made their way to the door.

"Will do," Kyle replied, oozing the trademark Valenti charm as he ushered Max out the door.

"The cliffs?" He questioned, stopping as they neared Kyle's mustang.

"Don't you want some answers?" Kyle countered. "Have you even been out there?"

Max paused, not recalling a time that he was. "No."

"Then, don't you think you should at least check it out?" He asked, crossing his arms over his chest. "Obviously, it means something if half the images were about the cliffs."

"Do I dare ask why you've been out there?" Max stammered as he reluctantly followed Kyle's lead and got into the car.

"No." Kyle chuckled. "Just know it's the 'it' place to get drunk and laid."

Max stared at him, momentarily shocked by his words, but he should have gathered as much with his reputation. Kyle chuckled once more at Max and peeled out of the parking lot, heading toward the cliffs.

First off, thank you all for the feedback, it really keeps my muse going.

Flamehair-Thanks! I'm glad you like it so far. And how'd you guess? ;)
Synera- Thanks!
begonia9508- *g* Thanks!
Michelle in Yonkers- Yes, Max got flashes from Kyle... But, I've always associated their flashes on extreme emotions. For Max and Liz it was love/lust and for Kyle it was anger. When they have a spike in emotions, they are more apt to have flashes... Does that make sense? *g*

Secondly, sorry for the delay, but I've been sick and work has well sucked. *pout* But, this next update is a bit longer!

Enjoy!

~3~

Max stepped out of the car and was hit with the sense of familiarity as he gazed out over the desert landscape. He found himself being pulled by an unseen force and he started to run. He could hear Kyle calling out to him, but he couldn't stop.

"Damn, Evans." Kyle hissed as he quickly followed behind him, climbing up the rocky terrain as they made their way up the cliff.

"Here," Max stated as he came to a halt, causing Kyle to jerk to a stop behind him. He raised his hand and they watched in amazement as a silver handprint shimmered on the rock wall.

Kyle gasped in shock, holding his breath as Max placed his hand on the handprint and a door opened in front of them. "How did you know-"

"I've been here before," Max stated as they entered the small cave enclosure and Max stopped in his tracks as his eyes focused onto his empty pod.

"Holy shit," Kyle gasped and Max turned his gaze to him. "Is that-" he began as he pointed to the opposite side and Max glanced over at the pod that was still intact a glowing hand pressed against the taunt surface.

Max rushed to the pod, his heart aching as the glowing hand started to fade. He drew in a quick breath, suddenly understanding what the dreams meant- she was trapped, in distress, she needed his help, his wife. "Help me," Max grunted as he tried to break through the pod.

"Can't you use your powers?" Kyle questioned as he reached out and touched the cool pod with his fingers.

"I could," he exhaled as he tried once more to open the pod with his bare hands. "But, don't want to hurt her."

"Yeah," Kyle snorted as he pulled his pocket knife out of his back pocket and stabbed the pod. He instantly cried out in pain as an energy blast shot out at him and he flew against the opposite cave wall. "Fuck."

"You okay?" Max questioned rushing over to him and helping him up.

"I'll be fine," Kyle grumbled as he dusted the dirt off him, his body tingling from the excess energy running through his body. "But, damn, what a defense mechanism."

Max nodded as they turned their gaze to the pocket knife protruding from the pod. "It was-" he began as the pod began to crack open, spilling a green gooey fluid to the ground. Max placed his hand on the pods and pulled back the sides, forcing it to open further.

"Careful," Kyle called out as the girl from the flashes stumbled out of the pod and Kyle dropped to his knees just in time to catch her before she hit the cave floor. "Oh, my-" he gasped as he gazed up at Max.

She was real.

Max froze, his heart aching as he noticed that she was not breathing, she was lifeless in Kyle's arms. He reached out to her, hoping to establish a connection and heal her, but he couldn't. "We're too late."

Kyle rolled his eyes. "Amateur." He grunted as he quickly took off his shirt and covered her with it like a blanket. He gently placed her on the ground and began mouth to mouth resuscitation.

"I didn't realize-" Max began after a short pause and Kyle flashed him a glare of annoyance as he forced another breath of air into her lungs.

Kyle pulled back sharply as she began to gasp, spitting out the goo from her mouth and she opened her eyes. "Hey," Kyle smiled as she stared up at him, her eyes wide as she studied him.

"Hey," Max stated and she turned her gaze from Kyle to Max. Her face brightened with recognition and she smiled weakly.

"Here," Kyle began as he helped her sit up and she nodded, holding Kyle's t-shirt close to her chest.

She glanced between them and frowned as her brow knitted in confusion. She looked as if she had something to say, but she didn't.

"I'm sorry," Max began softly. "I- we left you here."

She frowned once more, staring between them, her breathing hitching as she tried to pull away from Kyle and reached out to Max.

"Careful," Kyle prompted as he held her protectively in his arms and Max felt a surge of jealousy.

She exhaled loudly as if annoyed and placed her hands on Kyle's thigh. He cried out as her hands glowed briefly and he fell back unconscious, inadvertently pulling her with him.

"What did you do?" Max demanded as she flinched in response, ignoring his intense gaze and turning her own gaze to Kyle. "Kyle?" He called out as he knelt down beside them, searching out a pulse and sighed with relief as he felt Kyle's bounding pulse.

A moment passed in deathly silence, before Kyle blinked up at them hovering over him. "Remind me not to join in the alien fun next time," he grumbled as he slowly sat back up and found that the girl that had just zapped him was still in his arms studying him closely.

"Kyle?" Max began and Kyle glanced at him briefly as he heard a fuzzy static in his ears. He shook his head and turned his attention back to the girl. "What did you do to him?" He demanded once more and she bristled slightly.

'He can not hear me,' her voice echoed in Kyle's mind and he stared at her in shock. 'He has closed himself off to me.'

"How?" Kyle gasped in response and she frowned.

"How what?" Max asked, slightly confused at his questioning. "Kyle?"

'I do not understand your words.' He heard her voice once more and he nodded.

"She doesn't understand us," Kyle stated as he glanced at Max. 'I can hear you-' he thought and she smiled brilliantly.

"What do you mean?" Max questioned as he studied them. "How do you-"

"She's using some sort of telepathy, I think." He replied as she studied Max in return.

"Why can't I-" Max began softly, feeling rejected as he stood up.

Kyle shrugged. 'How can I hear you?' He thought as she glanced between them.

'I made you my guardian-' she replied. 'You will always be able to hear me- unlike my love. He does not remember how. He has closed of his mind to me, he has forgotten about me.'

"Oh," he drawled as he flashed a glare at Max. "You've closed yourself off to her. I bet it's because of Liz."

"Liz?" Max gasped, his eyes narrowing slightly at her. "How does she know about Liz?"

"She doesn't know about Liz," Kyle rolled his eyes. "She says you're closed off to her- I assume it's because of Liz."

"Oh," Max sighed as he knelt down beside her and she smiled at him, reaching her hand out to him. "What's your name?"

She traced her fingers over his lips and frowned, turning her gaze to Kyle. 'Please.'

'Your name,' Kyle thought and she smiled briefly, her smile fading as she realized the implications of the statement.

'He does not remember me,' she whispered sadly as she dropped her hand and shivered in Kyle's arms. 'Ava,' she added softly. 'My name is Ava.'

"Ava," Kyle announced as Max nodded in reply.

'And he is Zan, the king and my husband.' She continued and Kyle gasped in shock.

"No shit?" He quipped as he stared at Max. "You're the King?!"

Max bristled, pulling away at his words. "No."

'What is wrong?' She questioned as she studied his reactions, pausing as she studied Kyle. 'What is your name, my guardian?'

'Kyle,' he replied quickly. 'And your king is Max.'

'Max,' she repeated softly, lovingly and Kyle fought the urge to scowl, almost wishing she'd say his name like that. 'He does not remember our people, our land, our home. Antar.'

"Antar," Kyle stated and Max's eyes widened.

"Antar," he repeated the name familiar on his tongue. "I know-" he paused as shook his head. "How do I know Antar?"

"It's apparently your home planet," Kyle explained as Ava looked back and forth between them.

'How?' She suddenly questioned in Kyle's mind. 'Why do you speak with your lips- how do I?'

He shrugged, turning his gaze to Max. "Um, when you came out of your pods- I'm assuming you didn't speak, since I'm getting the feeling you didn't speak on your home planet. 'Cause she's wondering how."

"Oh," Max gasped as he gazed at her, reaching out and touching her lips softly. "It just came naturally after a few weeks, we adapted to the language easily."

Ava smiled at him, loving the smallest touch. 'I do not understand.'

Kyle groaned, instantly hating his new role as interrupter. 'How can you not understand the English word, when you can understand me now?'

She laughed, her voice ringing lightly in the air. 'You are thinking in Antarian, my guardian, you know the language as I do, at least in your subconscious mind.'

Kyle's mouth dropped open and he stared at the two before he quickly pushed her off into Max's arm. "Okay this is a little too much for the Earth boy at the moment." He announced as he stormed out, leaving them alone.

"Kyle," Max shouted after him as he glanced down at Ava in his arms and he slowly stood them up. She clutched onto him, her legs trembling underneath her. "Can you-" he began as she gazed up at him with confusion.

She shook her head, blinking back tears as her king stared at her. Ava didn't understand what he was saying and she needed her guardian to help her. The feelings that she felt from her love were no longer the ones she remembered, she felt even more alone.

"Ava," Max stressed as she continued to tremble, unable to stand without his help. He gazed over her and realized that she still only had Kyle's shirt pressed against her chest, now covered with the green goo from the pod and dirt. "Oh, Ava." He sighed as he helped her sit back down and he quickly removed his shirt and pulled it over her head. She raised her arms up as he pulled the t-shirt down and he nodded, wincing slightly at how the material hung over her small frame. But, he couldn't help but smile at her and he pulled her hair out from underneath the shirt, drying it instantly at his touch. "We'll find something better fitting later-" he stated as he ran his fingers through her hair.

Ava sighed at the simple touch and smiled up at him. Max smiled in response as feelings of love and acceptance washed over him. "Ava," he whispered once more as he felt even more drawn to kiss her, she felt so perfect in his arms. "My Ava," he sighed, his lips lingering over hers as he wrapped his arms around her, drawing her closer to him.

"Jesus," Kyle groaned, interrupting the moment and Max pulled away sharply, taking a step away from her. "You have a fucking girlfriend." He hissed, glaring at Max as he pulled Ava into his arms.

"It's not-" Max began to protest, realizing it was exactly what it looked like. "I'm drawn to her."

"And what about Liz?" He questioned dryly as Ava glanced between them.

"She's everything," Max sighed looking away from them as he rubbed the back of his neck. "I just- I don't-"

"Know," Kyle finished, shaking his head. "You're fucked up, Evans."

'What is wrong?' Ava questioned, glancing between them.

Kyle sighed, his eyes fluttering close as he took a deep breath. 'Nothing.'

"We should go," Max whispered, gazing off into the distance.

"And where do you recommended?" Kyle drawled as he glanced down at the bewildered girl in his arms. "We can't just waltz into-"

"Your place," he stated as he turned his gaze back to Kyle. "Your father can help- we need to find a safe place for Ava."

"Fine," Kyle grumbled as he rolled his eyes and swept Ava off her feet, catching her by surprise.

'Kyle?' She called out with her mind as she automatically wrapped her arms around his neck and held onto him.

'We are going somewhere safe.' He replied as he cradled her against his chest and walked past Max and headed back to the car.

Max followed after them, unable to push back the jealousy that he felt. He wanted to be the one to protect her, to hold her. Her very presence unnerved him- it made him think more on his past and not in the present.

"Evans," Kyle sneered breaking his train of thought and he glared over at him. "Hurry your ass up."

Max paused, wondering how long he had been lost in his thoughts. Kyle was leaning against his car, his arms crossed over his chest and he could see Ava sitting in the back seat, her eyes wide with wonder as she traced her fingers over the car's upholstery.

Max sighed, shaking his head as he crossed over to the car and climbed in as Kyle jumped into the driver's seat. He glanced back at Ava and his heart caught in his throat, she was radiant in the sunlight. Her eyes were sparkling with laughter and he suddenly realized how he could have loved her.

Thank you, begonia9508, kittens, Synera, and Flamehair for the feedback! It really means so much to me.

This next part is a lot of little scenes...

Enjoy!

Kyle watched Max watch Ava and he couldn't help but be drawn to her as well. There was something magical about her. She in turn, didn't even realize they were even in the room as she focused all her attention on the flashing images of the television screen.

He smiled at her wonderment and her small exclamations that only he could hear. "Shouldn't we call the others?" Kyle questioned as he turned his gaze to Max.

"What?" He gasped, tearing his gaze away from Ava.

"Call the others?" Kyle repeated. "Like your sister and Michael?"

Max eye's cleared and nodded. "I'll call them."

"You do that," he snorted as he turned his attention back to Ava and realized she may like some real clothes instead of the oversized shirt she was wearing.

Kyle reached for the phone, dialed Maria's number, and waited for her to pick up. "Hey."

"Hey," Maria responded. "Whatcha need Valenti? I'm a busy girl and-"

"I need a pair of panties- preferably something black and lacy."

"Kyle James Valenti!" Maria cried in outrage. "Did you just ask-"

"You have to come see her," Kyle grinned as he glanced back over at Ava. "She's hot and the newest addition to our alien family."

"Whoa," she gasped and Kyle could easily picture her shocked face. "What?"

"I need some clothes for Ava," he smiled as he turned his gaze back to her. "You're close to her size and I don't think she wants to be in Max's t-shirt to meet the rest of the gang."

"Ava? Max?" Maria repeated. "I'm on my way over-" she added, hanging up and Kyle chuckled in response.

~

Maria arrived a few minutes later, a tote bag swung over her shoulder as she entered the house with a quick knock. "Kyle?" She called out as he met her in the hallway. "What's going on? Where's this Ava chick?"

Kyle chuckled as he led her into the living room. 'Ava,' he called out to her with his mind and she turned to him. "Maria, this is Ava."

'Ava, this is Maria, a friend.' Kyle added as she smiled meekly at her.

"Hi," Maria smiled, looking her over, causing Ava to blush with the intensity. "I can see why you needed my help."

"Yeah," Kyle nodded as he turned his attention to Ava, who was looking up at him curiously. 'Maria will help you wash and dress.'

'I would like that,' Ava smiled as she attempted to stand, but failed as her legs trembled beneath her.

"Careful," Maria stated as she reached out to steady her, glancing at Kyle for an explanation.

"She just came out of her pod," he stated as Maria's eyes widened. "Her muscles are still pretty weak-"

"Why can't Max fix her?" She questioned as she glanced around the room for him. "Where is he?"

Kyle shrugged, "he went to call the rest of the alien trio."

"And you did feed the girl, right?" Maria prodded as Kyle flushed.

"Oh."

"Men." Maria grunted as she helped Ava sit back down and then made her way to the kitchen. "You got any Tabasco?" She called out and Kyle groaned.

"Somewhere," he stated as he glanced over at Ava. 'Stay here,' he stated and she nodded in reply, turning her gaze back to the TV. "Try the cabinet," he called out as he joined Maria in the kitchen.

"I can't believe you guys didn't think to feed the poor girl- and you know, heal her?" She grumbled more to herself as she made a sandwich for Ava. "Which cabinet?"

"Um," Kyle paused as he opened one and ruffled through the contents. "Here."

"Thanks," Maria smiled as she poured a liberal amount onto the sandwich and then handed the plate to Kyle. "Go feed her," she stated. "I'm going to get Max so he can heal her."

~

Max stared off into the back yard, noticing for the first time the old swing set that sat in the corner of the yard. He crossed over to it and sat in the swing, just sitting there and contemplating the last few hours. He had thought that Michael and Isabel would be happy to hear that there was another one of them, but they both seemed upset.

Correction, they were pissed at him and not really about Ava's arrival. Max sighed as he rubbed the back of his neck, the strain he was feeling growing. Michael was pissed that he didn't come to him first, that he wasn't there at the caves, that he was quote 'excluded'. Michael had questions of his own, and was upset that he was working and wasn't able to leave the grill for another hour. Isabel on the other hand sounded weary and sad that he had not mentioned any of this before, that he had not confided in her. She was out of town shopping and would be an hour before she was able to meet Ava as well.

"Hey, girlfriend," Maria's voice came out of nowhere and he glanced up to see her standing in front of him.

"Maria?" He found himself questioning as he stood up quickly. "What are you doing here?"

"Kyle called," she stated as she glanced back at the house. "I brought some clothes and stuff for Ava."

"Oh," Max nodded, smiling slightly. "Thanks."

"So," Maria began. "You think you can heal her?"

"What?" He gasped, tensing at the thought of Ava in pain. "Is she hurt? What did Kyle do-"

"Nothing," she groaned, rolling her eyes. "She's weak. Her muscles need a little zap- she has been in a freaking pod all this time."

Max nodded, flushing as he realized he didn't even think of why she was weak, her very presence keeping him slightly off guard. "Her muscles have atrophied with disuse." He stated and Maria just arched her eyebrow at him.

"So, is that a yes?" She questioned. "Cause, she'd probably feel a lot better after a shower and a change of clothes."

Max sighed, feeling like a failure for not thinking of her basic needs first. "Yeah." He agreed as he turned and headed back into the house, freezing as he spied her and Kyle sitting on the couch. They were sitting very close and he felt the familiar stirrings of jealousy and he bit back a groan.

Ava didn't notice him immediately, she seemed more focused on the sandwich she was nibbling on. But when she did, she turned her complete focus to him. She wiped her mouth with a napkin and smiled up at him, placing her plate to the side.

"Ava," he began softly as Kyle stood up, giving him the space he needed to sit down beside her. "Let me heal you," he whispered as he placed his hands on hers and sent a healing energy into her, instantly revitalizing her weak muscles.

Thank you, begonia9508, Flamehair, Synera, and Michelle in Yonkers for the feedback.

Yes, Max is responding a little stronger to Ava then in the show, but remember it's only been a few hours since they found her. Max's heart belongs to Liz and it will be more clear in the next few parts.

Enjoy!

"Earth to Michael," Liz called out as she stared at him through the open partition. "I'm still waiting on two-"

"Did you know?" Michael hissed, turning to her, completely ignoring her comment.

"Know about what?" Liz questioned softly, slightly confused.

"About Max and Kyle's little fieldtrip to the cliffs?" He grumbled and Liz frowned, recalling her previous conversation with them. "And their little discovery?"

Liz's eyes widened. "I knew about the trip, but not the discovery-" she paused. "What did they find?"

Michael stiffened, glancing around their immediate area before he leaned in closer to her. "Our pod chamber, and Ava."

Liz pulled back sharply. "Ava?"

"Yeah," he nodded. "She's the fourth alien apparently- Max took her to Valenti's."

"Max called you?" She questioned, suddenly feeling hurt that Max didn't think to call her.

Michael just nodded in reply. "He just called- he wanted Isabel and I to come over and meet her." He scowled as he glanced over at the clock. "But I'm stuck here for another hour."

Liz nodded, instantly understanding his frustration. "Maybe Jose will come in early."

"Yeah, right." Michael grunted, turning his attention back to the grill.

"Or maybe not," She sighed, knowing that Jose had the habit of being late and she couldn't honestly think of a time he came in early. She glanced up at the clock and realized she still had two hours to go before Maria would be coming in to relieve her and finish off the shift. Liz wanted to go too, she had the sudden need to see Max.

"Order up," Michael called out, instantly breaking her from her thoughts and she forced a smile to her face.

"Thanks."

~

"Can't she talk?" Maria questioned after a moment.

"Not exactly," Kyle began. "She's telepathic."

"And apparently she can speak with Kyle and no one else," Max grumbled looking away.

"So far," Kyle interjected. "She may be able to speak with Michael or Isabel."

"How is that even possible?" Maria quipped. "He's human-"

"She zapped me earlier," Kyle shrugged. "She made me her protector."

"Okay," Maria mused, staring between Kyle and Ava. "And I'll repeat my question again- how is that even possible? The last I checked, you're human and the newest addition to the, 'I know an Alien' club."

Kyle rolled his eyes, shrugging once more. "Not sure-" he began as he glanced at Max.

Max shrugged. "No idea, I didn't realize we could do such a thing."

"Yeah, yeah, never mind," Maria drawled, shaking her head as she held her hand out to Ava and Ava placed her hand in hers. "Time is ticking and I'm sure Ava would prefer to shower and change into some real clothes-"

Ava smiled as she stood up with ease and glanced over at Kyle with inquiring eyes. 'Kyle?'

'Maria is going to help you to shower and change,' he explained and Ava's smile brightened. "Just holler if you need me." He added as he winked at Maria.

"I think we'll be okay." Maria assured him as she led Ava back into the bathroom.

Ava watched her with wide eyes as Maria pulled back the shower curtain and turned on the water adjusting the temperature, before turning her attention back to Ava. "Okay," she frowned as she glanced between Ava and the bathtub. She gestured for her to take off the t-shirt she was wearing and to get into the tub.

Ava nodded, pulling the t-shirt over her head and hesitantly stepped into the bathtub, making a squeaking noise as she stepped under the spray of water. Maria couldn't help but laugh as Tess grinned and tilted her head back under the water.

"It's nice, huh?" Maria smiled as she reached for the generic shampoo and grimaced at the overly manly scent. She snorted and put it aside, glad that she brought her own products. "Stay there-" she called out to her and quickly ran back into the living room to where she left her bag and quickly returned to the bathroom. "Now, this is the stuff to use."

Ava ran her hands through her damp hair and watched Maria carefully as she produced a bottle of shampoo. "Here," Maria began as she reached for Ava's hand and poured the shampoo into her hand.

Ava's mouth opened, her eyes widening at the feel of the gel on her hand and looked up expectantly at Maria. She worked her mouth as if to speak, but nothing came out. She still didn't quite grasp the language.

"Put it in your hair," Maria instructed as she pointed to Ava's head. "Shampoo-" She spoke softly and nodded as Ava put the hand to her head. "Now rub it in." She smiled as she rubbed at her own head.

Ava paused, watching her closely before she began to rub the gel into her hair. She gasped in surprise as the lather began to form under her fingertips and she glanced quickly at Maria, who just nodded in response. Unable to stop the laughter from bubbling up as the lather grew into more.

"Now rinse it off," Maria stated as she pointed to the water and Ava quickly followed her instructions. Maria just took a moment to watch in amazement, the wonderment in her eyes was simply childlike and almost comforting in a way. "Now conditioner."

Ava smiled as they repeated the procedure with the conditioner, loving the different textures, it was so different from what she knew. She opened her mouth once more, trying to place the words she had heard into form but she still couldn't. She sighed, feeling frustrated.

"You'll get it," Maria stated and Ava just stared at her, not knowing what she was saying, but getting the general idea. "Okay, a quick scrub down and we're done."

Maria placed a liberal amount of her vanilla body wash onto a natural sponge and handed it to Ava. Ava took the offered sponged and stared at it, before she glanced at Maria. "Just, um," she began as she ran her hand over her arm, in hopes to demonstrate. "Scrub."

Ava's eyes widened in realization and nodded as she rubbed the sponge over her skin, creating a streak of lather over her skin. She smiled at Maria as she handed her back the sponge and rinsed off.

"All done," Maria grinned as she leaned over to turn off the water and grabbed the thick towel. "Now we just have to get you properly dressed and then we can go out to the boys."

Thank you, flyawayraven, Flamehair, begonia9508, and Synera for the feedback, it means a lot to me. *hugs*

Here is the next scene... Enjoy!

Max shot a glance back toward the bathroom, tensing slightly as he noted the shower being turned off. He rubbed the palm of his hands against his jeans, he was nervous, he was unsettled. He couldn't seem to catch his bearings, he was in the state of flux and he didn't know how to calm himself.

"I'm sure she's fine," Kyle stated and he turned his gaze to Kyle.

He nodded, dropping his gaze to the carpet. "Thank you," he began softly and he glanced up sharply when Kyle snorted in reply.

"For what?" He questioned. "I'm not completely heartless," he grunted. "No matter what you may think of me-"

"It's not that," Max replied quickly, shaking his head. "You didn't have to-"

"I didn't really have a choice," Kyle shrugged. "First the flashes, then Ava made me her guardian- I'm linked to her whether I want to be or not."

Max tensed, hating the reminder that he failed her once more. "I'm sure we can break that if-"

"No," Kyle snapped, shaking his head, wanting anything but that. "It's fine. I don't mind."

Max stared at him, once more feeling jealous. "Sure you don't."

Before Kyle could respond, Michael came flying through. "Where is she?"

"Don't you know how to knock?" Kyle grumbled, standing up, crossing his arms over his chest.

"Whatever, Valenti." He growled, mimicking his pose, glaring at him before he turned his gaze toward Max. "Well?"

"Maria is with her," Max began, unable to finish his thought as Michael glared at him.

"Maria?" He gasped. "Why does Maria get to meet her before us?" He challenged. "At that rate, why didn't you wait for us to go-"

"Like you would have waited?" Kyle countered.

"Just stop." Max sighed, stepping between them. "Do you really want Ava to see you two bickering?"

Michael and Kyle shared a withering glare and were about to challenge him when Maria walked into the room followed by Ava.

"Hey, spaceboy, did you come to see our new resident alien?" She grinned as she crossed over to him and kissed him lightly on his lips.

"Yeah," he nodded as he turned his attention to the petite blonde. "Ava?" Michael questioned as he stepped closer to her and she glanced up at him.

Her eyes lit up with recognition and she flung her arms around him and Michael wrapped his arms around her, holding her close, instantly feeling like he was home.

Maria and Max shared a glance, each wondering what was going on, both knowing that Michael wasn't known to show his emotions as such.

"You didn't even get that reaction," Kyle joked as he glanced over at Max and then returned his gaze to Ava. 'Ava?' Kyle implored and she turned her face toward him and smiled.

'Kyle,' she replied a bright smile on her face. 'This is my cousin Rath, our families were so close- he is more like my brother!'

Michael's eyes widened as he realized that he could hear their voices in his mind, even though neither were speaking with their lips. 'Like a brother?'

Ava let out a squeal of delight as she once more hugged Michael. 'Oh, Rath. You have not forgotten.'

'Forgotten what?' He questioned slightly confused as Kyle shook his head.

'By nature you are a telepath-' Kyle explained. 'Max has closed himself off and can't communicate with her.'

"Oh," Michael gasped as he studied them briefly. 'How can you?'

'Ava made me her guardian,' he added as Ava nodded in reply.

"What is going on?" Maria finally questioned as she stared at them, her eyes narrowing on the fact that Ava was still in Michael's arms.

Michael flashed her a rare smile. "Ava's my cousin," he grinned as he pulled away from her and took a moment to really look at her.

"You can hear her too?" Max questioned, his jaw clenching tight.

"I can't believe you can't," Michael mused as he turned his gaze to him.

'Yeah, the almighty King can't speak to his queen.' Kyle snorted and Michael's eyes widened.

'King?' He repeated as he glanced between the two.

'Yes.' Ava smiled sadly. 'Do you remember?'

Michael shook his head. 'No, I don't.'

'You were the greatest general Antar has ever seen- you were the King's Second in Command.' She continued. 'You were a great warrior and a hero to our people.'

"Well," Maria sighed, rolling her eyes at their obvious silent communication. "It's been fun and all, but I have to get to work."

Ava glanced at Kyle as she heard Maria's voice, needing his explanation. 'She has to go to work.' Kyle supplied and Ava nodded, reaching over and taking Maria's hand in hers.

'Thank you,' she began as she squeezed her hand, unable to fully thank her for her help.

Maria smiled and squeezed Ava's hand, instantly understanding her hidden meaning of thanks. "You're welcome." She added as she dropped her hand and reached for her bag. "Call me," she stated as she glanced over at Michael, winking at him as she turned and left.

Ava watched the interaction closely and turned her gaze to her cousin. 'Are you with Maria?' She questioned. 'What of Vilondra?'

'Vilondra?' Michael repeated confused as he watched as Maria leave.

'Maybe she means, Isabel,' Kyle offered as he sat down on the couch.

"Okay," Max began sharply. "What is going on?"

"Aren't we temperamental?" Kyle snorted. "You're the one that's forgotten."

Max growled, hating the bitter reminder. "That's no reason to exclude me-"

Michael turned to him, "she's only asking about Isabel. I think."

'Rath,' Ava prompted and Michael turned to her, shaking her head.

'It's Michael.' He corrected and she frowned. 'And Vilondra is Isabel- and Isabel and I are not together. Maria and I are kinda dating.'

Ava raised a brow and smiled. 'Kinda? It seemed like you were dating to me-'

"Wait." Kyle gasped. "Does that mean you and Isabel were together?"

Michael shrugged as Max eyes' widened. "What is going on?"

"Chill, your highness," Kyle chuckled. "Everything will be fine- Ava will learn to speak soon, until then you need to relax."

Max stared at Kyle and then glanced at Ava and Michael who seemed to be talking once more without words in the corner of the room. He couldn't take much more of this. "Fine." He hissed as he took a step back and resolved himself to just wait, he really didn't have any other choice.

Thank you Synera, begonia9508, and Flamehair for the feedback, it means so much to me!

And so sorry for the delay- work has been a little crazy!

Enjoy.

Ava and Michael laughed on the couch and Kyle was pacing back and forth, talking with his father on the phone. Max on the other hand, just stood and watched, feeling even more at odds with everything.

He ached to know what they were talking about, to speak with Ava as they were. He sighed, closing his eyes, not knowing what to do. Suddenly, Max felt a calming wave envelope him and he instantly realized what he had been missing. Liz.

Max turned to see her standing at the front door poised to knock. Before she could, he quickly crossed over to her and let her in. He smiled at her, wrapping his arms around her and hugging her close. "Liz," he sighed as she responded to the hug and held onto him.

"Max," She smiled as they pulled away, pausing with worry when he didn't budge. "What's wrong? I thought-"

"It's nothing," Max whispered, leaning in and kissing her, and for the first time that afternoon he felt complete and in control of his emotions. "Love you," he added softly against her lips.

"Max," Liz blushed as she ran her fingers over his chest. "I love you."

Max smiled, kissing her once more.

Across the room, Ava looked up, instantly freezing as she watched the one she knew as her husband kiss another. She felt her heart break, knowing instantly that he would never hold her in his arms like that. Ava felt the burn of tears and she quickly stood up disregarding everything else and ran out of the room.

Kyle dropped the phone as he felt a burning sensation rip through him and all he could think of was that his queen had been betrayed. It was like he was moving on instinct, the need for revenge growing with ever second.

Michael jumped up, about to run after Ava's when he noticed Kyle out of the corner of his eyes, a sense of foreboding washed over him. He turned quickly, gasping as he noticed that Kyle's eyes were black and that his hands were glowing. "Kyle?" Michael began as he took a step closer to him.

Kyle didn't respond to him, he just kept moving toward Max in an almost predatory style. Michael stiffened as he heard Kyle's voice echo in his mind with vehemence. 'You have betrayed the Queen.'

Michael frowned, rubbing his brow as he realized exactly what that brief statement meant. It was a warning. "Max!" He urgently called out, needing him to take notice of the situation.

Max glanced over at Michael as he heard his name, his brow creasing with concern at the mere tone of it. He pulled away from Liz, turning more to see Kyle standing in front of him. "Kyle?" He questioned as he noted Kyle's pitch black eyes and he immediately raised his hand in defense as Kyle raised his glowing hand toward him. "Kyle?" He questioned once more as Kyle shoot an energy blast at him and he instantly protected himself with a shield.

"Kyle!" Michael shouted, but Kyle didn't respond to his name. Instead he shot Max with another blast.

Max absorbed the blast with the shield, faltering slightly at the intensity of it. Max glanced at Liz, equally confused over Kyle's sudden attack- but, more importantly that Kyle could.

"Kyle!" Liz called out, forcing her voice to stay calm as she clutched onto Max's arm. "Max, what's-"

Kyle's blasted him once more as Michael tackled him from behind. Kyle fought him as Michael managed to pin him to the ground. "Kyle," he grunted as he continued to fight against him. 'Stand down,' Michael demanded, channeling the authority as the general he once was. 'By order of the Queen.'

Kyle instantly slumped, his eyes clearing and returning to their natural shade of blue. He blinked up at Michael and instantly frowned. "What the fuck, Guerin?" He grumbled as he attempted to push him away.

"You've got to be kidding me, Valenti," Michael groaned as he pulled away and stood back up. "What the hell was that?" He questioned harshly as he gestured wildly to Max.

Kyle just stared at him as he glanced over at Max and Liz. "Hey, Liz." He smiled. "When did you get here?"

Liz returned the smile, her eyes wide with curiosity. "Right before you attacked Max."

Kyle scrambled to his feet and stared at her with confusion. "I think I'd remember if I went all rogue and attacked Max, trust me."

"But, you just did," Michael drawled. "I bet it has something to do with this whole guardian thing- Ava has a lot of explaining to do."

"What are you talking about?" Kyle questioned as he glanced once more around the room. "And where is Ava?"

Michael shrugged. "She just up and ran out of the room, I was about to go after her when you went all alien and attacked Max."

"It's true," Max stated. "Your eyes were black and you had powers-"

Kyle blinked, shaking his head. "That's not-" he began as he glanced down, noticing his cell phone on the floor and he suddenly recalled what triggered the attack. "Oh."

"Oh?" Liz questioned as Kyle visibly paled. "Kyle what is it? What happened?"

"I was talking with my dad when I felt-" his voice trailed off as he glared over at Max. "It's all your fault." He hissed, shaking his head with disgust. "All I can gather is that you kissed Liz in front of Ava, the sense of betrayal and loss was unbelievable."

"Why would that matter?" Liz questioned softly and Kyle rolled his eyes.

"Ask the king," he drawled as he turned away from them and went off to find Ava, his concern for her safety overwhelming.

"The king?" Liz repeated, turning to Max and Michael.

"Yeah, you're dating royalty." Michael snickered as he sat back down on the couch.

"Max?" Liz questioned, her breathing hitching ever so slightly. "What are they talking about?"

"According to Ava," Max began softly. "I was the king of Antar."

"Okay," Liz drawled, her brow knit in confusion. "But, what does that have to do with Kyle attacking you?"

"Ava was my queen."

Thank you, begonia9508, Daydreamer23, roswell4life, Synera, and Flamehair for the feedback, it means so much to me and it keep my muse happy!

Enjoy!

'Ava!' Kyle called out with his mind as he spied her sitting on the old picnic table, his breath catching in his throat as she turned to him. 'Oh, Ava.'

She shook her head, wiping angrily at her tears. 'Why must I have these memories?'

'I don't know,' Kyle sighed as he sat down next to her, wrapping his arm around her and she instantly turned to him for comfort.

'He loves her,' she began softly as she looked up at Kyle for the confirmation she needed. 'I do not remember him ever-' she stopped, tears filling her eyes.

'Yes,' he nodded, knowing there was no reason to sugarcoat what was obvious even to her. 'They see into each other's souls,' he added as she frowned in response. 'Liz is his soulmate.'

'I do not understand,' she stated as she studied him. 'What is a soulmate?'

'It's an Earth saying, I guess.' Kyle shrugged, gazing back at the house. 'It's kinda like your true and only love- it's all encompassing.'

Ava nodded, her brow knit in concentration. 'Do you have a soulmate?'

Kyle coughed, shaking his head no. 'Maybe someday,' he added hopefully, gazing at her once more, knowing that she could easily fill that spot in his heart.

'Zan was not my soulmate,' she confessed after a moment of silence. 'Not by your definition at least- he was my first love.'

Kyle couldn't help but smile at that. 'Max is not Zan.'

'I know,' she sighed as she glanced down at her hands. 'It will take some time-'

'Yeah,' he agreed as his thoughts lingered over Max. 'Um, I attacked him.'

'What?' She questioned with alarm, staring at him in shock. 'Why?'

'I believe I was defending you-' Kyle shrugged, trying not to show his alarm about the event. 'I didn't have any control- it was like I had no choice.'

'Oh, Kyle!' She cried, shaking her head. 'I did not think you would be bound to me since you are not Antarian- my emotions triggered the attack. Is he okay?'

"Is he okay?" Kyle grunted as Ava looked at him in confusion. "What about me?" He grated as she touched his lips and he instantly sighed against them. 'He's fine.'

'You are angry.' Ava mused as she studied him.

'No, shit.' He replied, no longer able to hide his feelings. 'If you can make me learn your language with a touch of your hand, why can't you like reverse the process and learn from me?'

She blinked, tilting her head ever so slightly to the right as she pondered his words. 'I do not know,' she began as she reached out her hand and touched his face, her palm resting on his cheek. 'We can try.'

Kyle smiled at her, hoping that it would work. 'Doesn't hurt to try,' he agreed. 'What should I do?'

'Clear your thoughts and look into my eyes,' she stated and he nodded, closing his eyes briefly as he cleared his thoughts and gazed into her intense eyes.

~

Liz blinked. "Your queen," she repeated, her lips thinning ever so slightly as she pressed them together.

"In other words," Michael cut in. "Your boyfriend is married."

Liz shot Michael a glare of annoyance, before she turned her gaze to back Max. "Do you love her?" She found herself asking, her voice trembling as she tried to keep her emotions in check.

Max sighed, glancing away from her briefly and Liz already knew the answer to her questions. "I do feel something for her- and I for a moment I thought maybe I could." He replied after a short pause. "But, I love you." He whispered as he gazed into her eyes.

Liz bit her lip and nodded, feeling a wave of sadness wash over her. "Then why didn't you call me too?" She questioned as she glanced once more at Michael. "You found the time to call Michael, but not me?"

Max sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Kyle prompted me to, I was too busy-" he paused, trying to think of the best way to explain his earlier feelings. "I was just lost in thought."

Liz pursed her lips together. "Why would Kyle have to prompt you?" She began as Max sighed. "You're obviously more affected by Ava than you want to admit."

"She confuses me," Max admitted. "Her very presence is unnerving, alien."

"She makes you see your alien side," Liz mused as she studied him briefly as she glanced around the room, trying to gain her bearings. This wasn't what she was expecting and if Maria was even slightly accurate in her description of Ava, she had everything to lose.

"Liz," he stressed. "She means nothing to me- I admit I was confused, but seeing you, being near you put everything in perspective."

"And what if Ava was here?" She couldn't help but ask. "You obviously still have feelings for her- and we." She paused, biting her lip. "We can't be together until you make a decision."

"I have made my decision," Max sighed, trailing his fingers over hers, squeezing her hand. "It's only you."

Liz smiled, feeling his love wash over her, warming her form the inside out. "Max-"

"You know," Michael cut in, destroying the tender moment. "You should meet her first, see just how Max is affected by her presence."

Liz stiffened, pulling her hand away from Max. "I hate to admit it, but he does have a point."

~

Kyle stared intently at Ava as she pulled away. "Did it work?" He questioned and her eyes lit up with recognition.

"Yes," she stated her voice dry and hoarse. Her eyes widened at the sound of her voice and she quickly covered her mouth with her hand. "I sound awful," Ava croaked and Kyle couldn't help but laugh.

"It'll get better," he smiled. "You've not used your voice before."

Ava nodded, coughing at the tickle in her throat. "It will?" She questioned, her voice already sounding better.

"See." Kyle grinned as he reached over and touched her face. "Perhaps we should go back in- I'll introduce you to Liz and I think Isabel should be here soon."

Ave worried on her lower lip as she glanced at the house. "Liz," she whispered. "Zan's love."

"Max." Kyle corrected and Ava flushed, shaking her head.

"Max." She repeated, her eyes burning once more with tears. "Everything is so different- I was not prepared for this." She brushed away her tears. "It will take some time."

"Time heals all wounds," Kyle whispered as he helped her up and then offered her a brief hug.

"Thank you," Ava smiled as she pulled away and turned back to the house, with Kyle following close behind her.

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback! I'm so sorry I've not updated in awhile- my muse was not talking and then work got in the way!

My muse started talking today and took the story in a whole new direction... silly muses! But, at least I'm writing! *g*

Enjoy!

"Hey, Liz," Kyle called out and Liz turned to his voice, freezing as she caught sight of the petite blonde by his side.

Ava.

Liz swallowed hard, cursing at the fact that Maria had not exaggerated on the alien's good looks. She shouldn't have expected anything else, after all Isabel was a statuesque blonde. Why would Ava be any different?

Kyle glanced between Ava and Liz, not noticing Liz's slight discomfort. "Liz this is Ava," he grinned as he turned to Ava. "Ava, Liz."

"It is nice to meet you," Ava began as both Max and Michael gasped, jumping to their feet.

Liz smiled, ignoring them as they tried to intercede. "It's nice to meet you, too."

"You can talk," Max stammered, interrupting their introductions. "When did that happen?"

Ava frowned, pushing Max aside. "I was not speaking with you," she stated her voice crisp with authority as she turned her gaze back to Liz and smiled. "Hi."

Liz's eyes widened in surprise at Ava's quick dismissal and she couldn't help but smile. "Hi."

"Kyle was telling me about you," she added as she glanced back at Kyle, smiling at him and Liz couldn't help but notice Kyle's obvious attraction to her.

"Wait-" Michael interrupted. "My god, Ava, you can talk! How is that even possible?"

Ava sighed, glancing between Max and Michael. "If you must know, Kyle showed me- although it feels awkward and the words seem so foreign."

"You are doing fine," Liz stated and Ava smiled at her in thanks.

"I fear I do not understand most of what Kyle has shown me- the English language is more complicated then it seems." Ava explained as she once more smiled at Kyle.

"Why didn't you suggest it earlier?" Max questioned a little more harshly than he intended and Kyle shot him a glare.

"Well, why didn't you think of it?" Kyle grumbled in response.

"This isn't the time," Liz interrupted as she glanced between them. "I thought you two were working out your differences."

Max and Kyle continued to glare at each other, neither offering a valid answer. Liz sighed, shaking her head as she turned her gaze to Ava. "You must excuse them."

Ava crinkled her nose and laughed. "They have been good to me."

Liz wondered briefly at her statement, but pushed it aside as she tried to focus on Ava instead of her growing insecurity. "Maria was very taken with you."

Ava instantly smiled, "she helped me. I cannot thank her enough."

"You're speaking pretty proper even if Kyle talks shit all the time," Michael interrupted and Ava frowned.

"I do not understand," Ava countered. "Am I wrong?"

"Oh, no." Liz replied quickly. "Most use slang or contractions, there's nothing wrong with the way you are speaking."

Ava paused, considering her statement and nodded. "I feel I can learn much from you, Liz."

"She's a wealth of knowledge," Kyle spoke up. "The smartest girl in school," he added with a small wink.

Liz felt her cheeks warm at their comments, her smile faltering as she noticed Max standing silent beside her, staring at Ava intently. Her heart ached as she realized that it was the same look that he used to give her, before.

"Don't believe a word he says," Liz stammered as she turned her gaze away from Max and glanced at Kyle.

"You know it's true," Kyle continued, winking once more and she suddenly remembered why she had dated him what felt like a lifetime ago.

"Must you?" Max quipped focusing his gaze on him.

Kyle glared at him.

Liz caught Ava's gaze and nodded, both feeling a certain discomfort over the two bickering. "I am sorry, my guardian attacked you." Ava stated, breaking the strained silence. "It shall not happen again."

"What exactly did happen?" Michael questioned as he studied her briefly.

Ava worried her lip as she turned her gaze to Max and Liz. "I let my emotions get the better of me."

"Kyle can feel your emotions?" Max gasped in outrage and Liz stiffened, suddenly seeing what Michael was alluding to her earlier. He was jealous and it suddenly explained the increased animosity between them.

"Yes," Ava whispered. "My guardian is in tune with my emotions- if I feel strong emotions as I did earlier, they will feel overwhelmed to act on them on my behalf."

Liz frowned. "Kyle exhibited powers- he is only human."

"Yeah," Kyle gasped, feeling his earlier trepidation wash over him. "Am I going to be some sort of freak?"

"Are you saying we're freaks?" Michael suddenly countered, raising his voice.

Kyle rolled his eyes. "I'm only stating the facts here. You're certainly a freak Guerin."

"Speaking from experience, Valenti?" Michael growled.

Liz and Ava both sighed at their hollow threats. Liz turned to Ava, "why did Kyle have powers?"

Ava shrugged her shoulders. "I do not know." She whispered. "I did not think that it would be possible, it is as if he has been changed." She explained softly. "But not by my hands."

"Changed?" Kyle gasped, his fears crashing down around him. "I'm turning into some freaky alien?" He questioned sharply as he glared at Max. "This is your fault!"

"Would you rather be dead?" Max replied curtly.

"I do not understand," Ava frowned, gazing at the two.

"Max healed Kyle," Liz explained and Ava's eyes widened.

"You have marked him," she gasped, paling slightly. "It is forbidden to bring one from death- the changes are unpredictable and I only furthered it."

Kyle paled as he shot a glance at Liz, both suddenly feeling sick to their stomachs as they both sat down quickly.

"What do you mean, I marked them?" Max questioned harshly as Ava frowned deepened.

"Them?" Ava repeated as she studied him. "You have healed more than one? Zan, how could you?"

"How could I not?" He gasped as he glanced over at Liz and Ava followed his gaze.

"Liz?" She whispered as Liz nodded in reply. "Zan," she hissed. "You have marked them-"

"Whoa, hold up." Michael interrupted. "What do you mean by marked?"

"They are forever linked to our King, if he dies, so will they." She stressed. "He has extended his lifeline to theirs. They are no longer human, they are changed on a molecular level-" she paused as she glanced at Liz and Kyle. "I am sorry."

Liz's earlier feelings no longer seemed valid as she shared a glance with Kyle. "Nothing has happened- we haven't had- we-"

"We'll figure this out," Max stated with authority he's not shown before. "You'll both be safe." He added as his gaze lingered on Liz. "I won't let anything happen to you."

A quick drive by posting!

Thank you, Daydreamer23, Rowedog, begonia9508, Flamehair, LoveIsForever, dusk, and Synera for the feedback, it means so much to me.

And I know everyone is being a little hard on Max... but, remember this is all happening in the same afternoon, even though it may not feel like it since I've been posting it over a few weeks so far! *g*

Also, I'm sorry my updates are not as quick as I'd like. Work just recently blocked this site and countless others, *pout* so I'm not been able to update as I finish a part.

Enjoy!

Liz felt numb as Ava's words repeated in her mind like a mantra. She bit her lip as she tried to control the sob that threatened to escape. She glanced up at Max, needing him more than she could imagine. "Max," she whispered as he turned more to her, his eyes clearing as if he finally took note of the situation at hand.

"Liz," he sighed as he dropped to his knees and immediately ran his hands over her thighs, sending her his love and strength that she had been craving. He took her hands into his and squeezed them lightly. "We'll figure this out. I'll make sure you're safe-"

"What if you can't?" Liz asked hesitantly, glancing over at Kyle who appeared as lost and numb as she felt. "What if we are changing?"

Max swallowed hard, his guilt manifesting as he studied her and Kyle. "There has to be some way- we will find the answers."

"Where is our protector?" Ava suddenly asked as she looked between Max and Michael.

"Nasedo?" Michael shrugged as he rubbed at his brow, looking intently at Kyle and Liz sitting on the couch. "Who knows, he's suppose to be infiltrating the special unit-"

"The special unit?" Ava repeated, wrinkling her brow. "I do not know this Nasedo. They sent us with four protectors, where are they?"

"We only know of one. Nasedo is the Indian name that they gave him." Max clarified as he continued to gaze into Liz's eyes. "We don't know his real name."

"Oh," Ava gasped, worrying her lower lip. "Nasedo would know-"

"He didn't say anything before," Kyle grumbled, breaking from his daze and looking up at her. "In theory, nothing will really change, if it hasn't already happened. Right?"

"In theory," Liz agreed. "But, you've already displayed powers- and Nasedo did state that their powers were human in nature, just more advanced. And we are human."

"That's not very comforting," Kyle grumbled.

"He knew of your healings?" Ava questioned, slightly alarmed. "Maybe the affect is not as much since you are human." She pondered out loud. "I can not believe you risked their lives, Zan. It is forbidden, you have not learned your lesson."

"It's Max," He sighed as he turned his gaze to her. "And what lesson are you talking about? I don't have any memories of our so-called past lives."

Everyone turned their attention to her as Ava stared intently at the ground. A moment passed in silence as she debated to tell him the truth. "You healed your sister."

Max's eyes widened at the admission. "And what happened?"

Ava sighed, shaking her head. "She was never the same, her heart was cold and she turned easily to the other side." She confessed. "It was due to her alliance with Khivar that led to our deaths."

"I can't imagine that Isabel would do that-" Michael stated, everyone in the room nodding in agreement.

"The one you know as Isabel was the sister you once knew," Ava explained softly. "They harvested cells from us almost every year in plans of our return. They used the sample they had before-" Ava's voice trailed off, unable to continue.

"Then we are safe by your own admission." Liz stated as she felt a calming presence settle over her. "I'm assuming that her personality change was literally overnight?"

Ava paused, her brow creasing in concentration. "Yes."

"I don't feel as if I've changed and it's been over a few months now." She stated as she glanced at Kyle. "Do you feel different?"

Kyle shrugged. "Not really," he paused as he chewed on his lower lip. "Are we going to change- develop powers?"

"I do not know," Ava sighed. "Only time will tell."

"Perhaps Nasedo will know," Max offered as he turned his attention to Liz. "I don't think I'd be able to stop myself if I had known the truth either way."

Liz smiled. "Then you're not as different from your former self," she whispered as she glanced at Ava, wondering once more how much of Zan still lived within him.

Before Max could form a response, there was a knock at the door, interrupting him from his thoughts.

"Come in," Kyle yelled out from his seat and Isabel walked into the living room a moment later.

"Max, I tried to-" Isabel began, her voice trailing off as she noticed Ava for the first time. "You must be Ava."

Ava smiled. "Yes and you must be Isabel."

"Yes," Isabel nodded, studying her closely. "And you're like us? Like me?"

Ava smiled once more, "yes."

Isabel grinned as she crossed over to her. "It's so nice to meet you," she gushed as they hugged. "It'll be so nice to have someone to share with-"

"What about me?" Max questioned slightly hurt. "I'm your brother."

"And that's the point!" Isabel laughed as they pulled apart. "I need girl talk."

"Girl talk?" Ava repeated, her brow raised in question.

"It's when girls get together and talk about boys and such," Liz explained, relaxing a little bit more.

"Ah," Ava nodded. "I would like that."

Isabel smiled and then turned her icy glare to her brother. "And why didn't you tell us about the dreams?" She gasped, irritated. "I would have helped you."

"I know," Max sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "I just didn't want to-"

"You should have let me decide that," Isabel groaned as she glanced at Michael. "Did you know?"

"Nope, Maxwell kept it all to himself." He grumbled, crossing his arms over his chest.

"I knew," Liz spoke up, earning a hurtful glare from both Isabel and Michael. "I urged him to talk to you both."

"You told Liz about the dreams," Michael grunted. "But not us?"

"What dreams do you speak of?" Ava asked, slightly confused.

Max paused, "I was dreaming of you."

"And damn were they hot," Kyle added as Max shot him a glare. "What?"

"How do you know?" Michael questioned sharply, staring at Kyle intently.

"The flashes earlier," Kyle explained. "We were fighting and bam, images of them getting it on."

Liz and Ava both gasped, their feeling hurt in different ways at the blatant statement. They paused and shared a brief glance, bonding ever so slightly in the moment. Liz felt betrayed, not only had Max's dreams been about Ava, but the flashes that they had shared were no longer special to just them. Ava felt the sting of betrayal once more at the reminder of something she could no longer have.
