Title: Sunder
Author: Icalynn
Disclaimer: This fiction is in no way affiliated with the WB, UPN, Melinda Metz, Jason Katims, "Roswell" the television series, or any of the actors of that series. The author makes no claim to any of the characters portrayed herein, and claims no remuneration for this work. This fic is for entertainment purposes only.
Pairings/Couples/Category: CC, AU
Rating: Teen
Summary: Max and Liz are together, the FBI is finally off their backs, Nasedo is at their side as their protector, and Valenti has become one of their most trusted allies. Everything should be perfect, but everything starts to unravel as dreams begin to haunt Max's nights. An AUverse where Tess has not come to Roswell as originally written, in fact she's still remains in her pod. The story takes place the summer after season one.
Author's note: This is my first Dreamer centered fic, so I hope I do them justice. There will be heavy Max/Tess undertones, but they won't actually be a couple- more of it will be based on their past. With Kyle and Tess becoming a couple in the end. So mainly M/L, K/T.

Max woke up with a start, his body covered in a film of sweat. He gasped for breath unable to calm his nerves as the tendrils of his dream continued to haunt him. It was the same dream that plagued him night after night- and all he could remember upon awakening was the intense feeling of being abandon, the sense of loss was overwhelming.
He sat up, suddenly needing to check on his sister. Max crept slowly into the hallway and crossed over to Isabel's room. He took a deep breath and looked in on her, relieved to see that she was sleeping peacefully. He closed the door quickly, but something still felt off. Someone he loved wasn't safe.
Max briefly considered if Michael was okay, but quickly determined that he would be able to handle himself. It had long passed that Hank was a threat and Michael's late night visits were a thing of the past. He paused, his mind racing with only one last option. There was only one person in his life that he loved that was not accounted for.
Liz.
Max darted back to his room and changed into a pair of jeans and tee, taking off into the directions of Liz's house before he could even think of sleeping for the night. He had to see Liz- he had to make sure she was okay. His pulse skipped a beat as he neared the Crashdown and he quickly made his way up the ladder and onto her balcony.
"Liz," he called out, tapping on her window.
She looked up at him in a sleepy daze, her eyes clearing as she spied him at her window. "Max?" She questioned as she slowly made her way to the window and opened it. "Max," she drawled as she glanced at her bedside clock and frowned. "What's wrong?" She questioned, reaching out to him, clasping her hand with his.
He sighed, suddenly feeling foolish. "I just had to see that you were okay," Max whispered as he squeezed her hand and helped her out onto the balcony. He sat back against the wall and pulled her into his arms. She settled easily into his arms, her back pressed against his chest, his arms wrapping around her protectively. They sat there together, just enjoying each other's presence under the stars.
"The dream again?" She asked after a short pause, tilting her head to the side, gazing up at him.
"Yeah," he sighed, closing his eyes briefly. "If only I could remember-"
"You need to talk to Isabel about this, she can dreamwalk you," Liz began as she brushed her lips against his neck. "Maybe she can unlock whatever it is that seems to-"
"I can't ask her to do that," Max groaned as he shook his head. "She has enough going on with Michael and Alex, her dreams-"
"She's your sister," she stressed. "She would want to help you with this-"
"That's what I'm afraid of Liz," he whispered. "I don't want her to be plagued by these dreams too. Whatever it is- I keep thinking someone I love is hurting."
Liz sighed, her brow knitted in concentration. "Is there someone else out there?" She suddenly asked as she turned more to him. "Max, what if there's another hybrid out there-"
"Nasedo would have mentioned it if there was." Max quickly refuted, but he doubted the sincerity of his words.
"Would he?" Liz prompted. "He's been so cryptic and I always get the feeling's he's up to something."
"I don't know," he sighed, shaking his head. "I just don't know."
"He comes out of nowhere, pretends to be you, kidnaps me, practically hands you over to the special unit, inadvertently brings both Valenti and Kyle into it, and-"
"He saved us," Max whispered, threading his fingers through hers. "He's taking down the special unit as we speak-"
"I know," Liz sighed. "But, he's not told you one thing that you need to know- like, where you came from? How did you get here? And if you did crash in the summer of '47, then why are you teenagers? "
"He will," he insisted. "He just needs to take care of business first."
Liz forced a smile to her face, hoping that's all it was. "I hope so."
Max nodded, kissing her softly. "I should be going," he stated after a short pause. "I just needed-"
"I know," she smiled as she returned the kiss. "See you later? I have a double shift- the morning and lunch crowd."
"Yeah," he nodded as they stood up and he hugged her briefly. "I'll drop in for the special."
Liz laughed. "I hope that's not all."
"Well, there's this really pretty waitress," he teased lightly, feeling the weight lift off of his chest momentarily. "I think she has the hots for me."
"Is that so?" She grinned. "I'll have to tell my dad to fire her."
Max laughed, leaning in and kissing her before he pulled away. "Sweet dreams."
"Sweet dreams," she smiled as she offered him a wave and he quickly made his way down. She sighed, hoping for the rest of the night he could sleep. "Night."
