Summary: This is a story unlike anything I've really done before. Max and Liz were together in college and something happened that forced her to suddenly leave. Years later she shows up again in danger of losing her life and no one knows why. Max takes it upon himself to find out what's going on and why people are after her, but the more he tries to help, the more he finds himself in danger as well.
Author's Note: Hey Everyone! Me...again! I deleted this from the dead and buried form, and am posting it from chapter 1 all over again. Why, you ask? Because I obviously stopped updating this awhile ago and couldn't figure out why until now. I didn't like the way I had done some things, and decided to do them over. For those that had read what I posted, you won't see a big change (if any at all) to the first four or five chapters. But from there on, it will be tossed out and replaced! Make any sense? I sure hope so! Anyway, this fic is my baby and I just HAD to bring it back, so I hope you all like it and bear with me. And this time, it's here to stay until it's over!
Chapter 1 - Is It Really You?
Max Evans sat at his desk, envelope in hand. This has been a daily routine of his for a little over a year now. He'd sit at his desk holding a letter that he wrote to Elizabeth Parker, without any idea as to where he should send it.
Liz, as he liked to call her, was his best friend in college. They met on the first day of their freshman year, and they had been very close ever since. Their friends used to joke around saying that they'd one day be married, and that they were like each other’s soul mate. Max was certain that they were right, but all of those dreams were shattered the day that she left.
He remembered it as if it were yesterday...it was the day he was going to purpose. He had been sitting on the couch waiting for her to arrive when she ran through the door, tears evident in her eyes. He asked her what was wrong, but she refused to tell him. She just said that she would always love him, kissed him goodbye, and left just as quickly as she came.
Max spent the next few months alone and refused to talk to anyone. Michael, another good friend, told him that it was finally time to move on. Max knew that he was right but couldn't imagine moving on without Liz, so he made himself a promise...he vowed to never date another girl because in his heart he knew that one day they would be reunited. He just didn't know that it would be so soon.
Max snapped back to reality and gently placed the letter back in his desk drawer. It was time for him to make his daily routines, and this was always a job that he looked forward to. It was the one time in the day where he felt like he could interact with all of the patients on a more personal level rather than the usual doctor-patient level. He worked at the Memorial Psychiatric Ward, and although he always found it intriguing, he was beginning to long for a normal life. One that didn’t always consist of having to help other people.
It’s not that he didn’t like to help other people with their problems, it just always seemed to bring more onto himself. He’d go home at the end of the day not only thinking about his own personal life, but also the lives of his patients. Sometimes it turned out to be too much for him, and he wasn’t sure how much more he could take before he himself would need a psychiatrist. Sure he had friends that he could talk to, just not the one friend that he needed. The only person to ever completely understand him.
Michael was a teacher at the local elementary school, and he was still a very close friend of his. Every morning they'd go out to eat before either one started work, and they'd talk about all of their problems they had with the female population. Of course, Michael's was a bit more humorous then his were. You know the usual; “she complains that I’m not putting my all into our kiss,” or “she wants to meet my family! We've only been dating for a month and she already wants to meet my family!" He must admit though, these were the moments that Max looked forward to. The moments where he forgot all about his worries, and concentrated more on the joys of life. He thanked God everyday that he had Michael with him. After loosing Liz, Michael was the only person that Max felt he could turn to. The only one that wouldn’t judge him for refusing to move on. As his mother put it, he was a very “depressing” young man, and not many people wanted to hang around him. Who could blame them really? He certainly couldn’t.
Then he had Maria DeLuca. Not only was she Michael’s girlfriend, but she too is a Doctor at Memorial. There were times that Max didn’t feel very comfortable near her, but it was only natural. She was a very bright girl who always spoke her mind, and she reminded him of Liz. Every Friday night she would come over with Michael and they'd have a movie night that was usually followed by pizza. Max would throw a tantrum whenever Maria insisted on watching some sappy chick flick, and of course this was every week. Maria would then slap him on his arm and tell him if he didn't cooperate then she would punish him. Michael always took it the wrong way, and that usually led to a fight of some kind. Usually food, water, or even pillow fights were common. Then, as anyone could have guessed, this would lead to one big cleaning party at Max's. Everyone invited. Of course he also had a lot of arguments with her, mainly over the fact that she shouldn’t stick her nose where it didn’t belong. He knew she was just trying to help cheer him up, but hey! When a man doesn’t want to be cheered up then a man doesn’t want to be cheered up.
Max walked into room 2A and saw Suzie on the floor playing with her dolls. He kneeled down by her and she handed him a toy.
“And who is this?” Max asked the little girl.
“That’s Kimberly,” she quietly replied.
“That’s such a pretty name! What made you name her that?”
“That’s the name of my Mommy.”
“And why does your doll have red crayon all over her face?"
“Because I was a bad girl and Mommy cut me. It wasn’t her fault though.”
“No? And whose fault was it?” Max inquired.
“It was mine. I forgot to cook her dinner when she got home. I know how Mommy hates it when I forget to cook dinner.” The little girl replied trying to mimic how a doll would actually sound.
“Well Suzie, I don’t think you have to worry about that anymore.”
The little girl looked into Max’s eyes before running off and hiding under the bed as if she were afraid that someone would come and find her.
Max sighed and slowly stood up. He just couldn’t believe some of the pain and torment that one human being could place onto another. It made him sick. He left the room when a nurse came up to him.
“Dr. Evans, we need you to come down to room 4C as quickly as possible.”
“Sure Karen, let’s go and you can fill me in on the way.”
The two walked over to the elevator and stepped inside.
“Now what’s the big emergency?”
“We have a new patient. No word on who she is yet, but we have four other nurses holding her down. She’s a bit feisty, and I’m not sure anyone else is going to want to share a room with her once she’s settled in.”
“Why do you say that?” Max questioned. Usually everyone was excited over having a new patient in the facility and they all saw it as a window of opportunity to make a new friend, so this news came as a shock to Max.
“Well, after biting Jamie, spitting on Laura and kicking three other patients, you tell me.”
“I see,” Max replied.
The elevator finally came to a stop and both Max and Karen stepped out. They walked over to the room, and sure enough there were four nurses holding a young lady down to the floor.
“Let her go,” Max said politely.
“Are you sure about that?” One of the nurses questioned.
“I said let her go.”
They did just that and the young women flung herself at Max. He fell to the ground and pulled the frightened person off of him. Max had to shake his head a few times just to make sure that his eye's weren't playing tricks on him like they had so many times before. But sure enough - sitting right in front of him, staring at him like a scared animal that had been caged for most of their life - was none other then Liz, the love of his life.

*Another side note: I will post a chapter a day until I hit Chapter 4. That way everything is caught up. But even then, I should have a *NEW* chapter written within those four days. The next fic of mine to be brought back from the dead will be The New Boy In Town*

Hey Everyone!
Thanks for the feed back, you guys! I really appriciate it! I also recognize some of you as readers from my other fics, and you guys have no idea how much it means to me to see you guys continue to come back for more. I know that in the past I had been REALLY bad at updating, but I swear that I'm getting better! Lol' So for those of you that have stuck with me since the very start...you all deserve an award! Lol' No, really...you guys are so patient and I love you all for it! Now on to chapter 2!
Chapter 2 - She remembers
“Mr. Evans?” A nurse questioned after seeing the pained look on his face.
“Leave us,” Max quietly ordered.
The nurse did as she was told, shutting the door behind her.
“Liz, do you know where you are?”
Instead of answering his question, Liz looked down and began playing with her hands.
“You’re at the Memorial Psychiatric Ward. Do you know how you got here?”
Max sighed in frustration as Liz once again ignored his question. He walked towards the door, ready to leave, when he slowly turned back around to face her. He took another look at the frightened woman sitting in front of him and couldn’t believe that this was the same Liz that he had fallen in love with years before.
“Do you even remember who I am?” Max quietly asked Liz, praying that she would answer him. When she didn’t reply to this question either - Max finally left the room, closing the door behind him.
Liz finally looked up from her hands when she heard Max leave and she quickly crawled to the door and ran her fingers across it. Closing her eyes she whispered as tears started to run down her cheeks.
“Of course I remember you, how could I forget?”
**********
“Where are you going?” Maria asked Max as he proceeded to leave the building.
“I’m going to the gym. I need to work off some frustration.”
“Does this have anything to do with that new patient of yours?”
Max stopped dead in his tracks upon hearing this.
“What do you know about her?”
“Just that you’ve been acting weird since she arrived. What’s going on? What don’t I know?”
“It’s none of your business, Maria. Now excuse me,” Max replied as he walked to his car and drove off. Maria pulled out her cell phone and dialed one of the only numbers she knew by heart.
“Hello?”
“Michael, I need you to do me a favor.”
“What is it?”
“Go to the gym and find out what’s wrong with Max.”
“You want me to check up on my best friend?”
“Yeah, he’s worrying me. He’s been acting weird since a new patient arrived. Almost like he’s scared.”
“And what’s he look like? This new patient?” Michael asked curiously. The guy must be big and intimidating to make Max scared.
“Actually, it’s a she. Brown hair, brown eyes, and petite. Quite harmless if you ask me.”
“But why would that...Holy shit! I have to go. I’ll talk to you later!” Michael replied as realization washed over him.
Liz was back.
**********
“Wow, that was a sad movie.”
“Yeah, tell me about it. It makes me wonder though...if one day I’ll wake up to find everyone gone.”
“Well, I don’t think you have to worry about that,” Liz replied.
“Oh, and what makes you so certain?”
“Because I’ll never leave you. I’ll be right by your side until the day I die.”
*********
Max began hitting the punching bag harder as more memories flooded his head.
*********
“Liz, are you okay?” Max asked as he walked into the room.
“What? Oh, yeah, I’m fine max. Really,” Liz replied not knowing that Max had entered her room.
“Are you sure? You know that you can tell me anything.”
“I know, Max, and I thank you for it. I love you with all of my heart. My entire life...I’ll never love anyone else. You‘re it for me. You know that, right?”
“Of course I do,” Max replied not knowing where all of this was coming from.
**********
‘Dear Max,
I know that you have many questions for me, and I’m sorry that I’m not there to answer them. The look on your face...when I told you that I was leaving...it killed me to see you like that. I didn’t want to go, I really didn’t, and it’s just that I had no choice. I know that doesn’t explain much, but please believe me. I love you and I always will. I told you that I wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and I am so sorry that I had to break that promise. I never intended to and I think that it broke my heart more then you’ll ever know. I want you to move on with your life...or at least try to. I don’t know if fate will ever bring us together again and I don’t want you to waste your life waiting for me. It’s not right and I love you too much to let you do that. Once again I apologize.
Love,
Liz’

“Max!” Michael yelled, realizing that it was a bad idea only after it was too late.
Max turned quickly and punched Michael across the jaw.
“Michael? I’m so sorry, I was just lost in my train of thought.” Max quickly apologized.
“Yeah, no problem. I just figured that I had it coming for something." Michael said as he rubbed the side of his face. "So tell me, what’s bothering you?”
“Nothing, why do you ask?”
“Max, you don’t have to lie. I already figured it out. Liz is back and she’s one of your patients...isn’t she?”
“How’d you find out?”
“Maria called me and told me to make sure that you were okay. That this new patient of yours had you acting weird. I asked for a description and I put the pieces together.”
Max began walking towards the door when Michael stepped in front of him.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
“I’m going out. Maybe next time you can keep your nose out of other people’s business. The same goes for that girlfriend of yours,” Max finished as he pushed past his best friend.
*********
“Michael, I’m really worried. It’s been four hours since we’ve heard from Max. Where do you think he went?” Maria questioned.
Just then Max came tumbling through the front door.
“My guess would say the local bar,” Michael replied.
“Hi guys,” Max greeted his friends as he fell onto the floor.
“Max, you’re drunk.”
“Uh-huh. Just a little.” Max said while holding up his thumb and index finger held close together as if to prove his point.
“Max,” Maria began before she was cut off.
“You don’t talk to me! You’re as bad as Jerry Springer when it comes to prying into other people’s lives!”
“Max, would you just give her a chance to talk? She was worried about you.”
“She was worried about me? Michael, please tell me what she had to be worried about?”
“I think she was worried at how taking care of this patient would affect you, and from the looks of it, she had a right to worry. Max, you can’t be Liz’s Doctor. You know it, and I know it. You’re too emotionally attached.”
“I don’t want to hear it, Michael. I’m her Doctor and nothing will change that. I plan on devoting all of my time to finding out what had happened to her and if you’re a true friend then you’ll sit back and let me. Trust me when I say that the pain I’m going through now is nothing compared to the pain that I went through when she left me in the first place. I need to get to the bottom of this. Not only for her welfare but for mine as well. Just understand, now that she’s back in my life, I have no intentions of ever letting her go again. And if you or Maria try to interfere in that, then there will be hell to pay. Now excuse me, I’m going to bed.”
Max began walking to his room when he fell to the ground yet again.
“Umm, guys? I think maybe I could use help just this once!” Max yelled before passing out.

Well, here's the next chapter as promised! I have to work tomorrow evening so I'll either post chapter four early in the morning, or later in the evening. Hope you guys like it, and the newest part to this story will be here in a few days!
Chapter 3 - F.B.I.
Max slowly opened his eyes and noticed Maria standing over him with water and two aspirin in her hands.
“Thank you,” he said while taking the pills from her and shoving them into his mouth. He then took the water and took a sip. “How bad was I last night?”
“You were drunk, Max. It’s that plain and it’s that simple. It was nothing that I’ll hold over your head, put it that way.” Maria replied.
“I appreciate it, and I really am sorry about the way I acted yesterday.”
Max got out of bed and began getting ready for the long day ahead of him.
“Is this apology for the way you acted before or after you were drunk?” Maria asked.
“Both. I had no right to treat you and Michael the way that I did.” Max looked down at his hands while saying this.
“Look, Max, it’s okay. I’d be lying if I said that you were completely wrong for acting the way that you had. I should never have gotten involved with what’s going on in that aspect of your life. Especially when it comes to Elizabeth Parker.”
“There are so many questions that I need answered and I don‘t know how to get them out of her. I know that something had happened to her, Maria. I just know it. However, I shouldn’t push you and Michael off to the side while I try and get my answers.”
Maria put her hands on Max’s shoulders and began to lightly shake him. “Max, I’m telling you that it’s okay! Would you stop trying to blame yourself for everything when I’m continuously telling you that everything will be fine? I swear! You guys are all the same! For once I just wish you would listen to me before I am forced to kick your ass!”
Max laughed at this and pulled Maria into a hug. He looked back on the last 24 hours of his life and realized that he needed to learn what’s really important in his life. He may love Liz, and he knew that he always would, but he needed to realize that she might no longer be the girl that he knew. The girl that he came to love. Somehow she ended up in a dark place and there was no telling whether or not she’d be able to break out of it. All he could do now was vow to take care of her while she was at Memorial, and Max had no intentions of transferring her anytime soon.
“Max, we really should start heading to work if we plan on getting there on time,” Maria said while standing up.
“Yeah, I guess you’re right,” Max said while pulling his white coat on over his shirt. “Let’s go, you’re driving!”
“Yeah, I figured that one was coming.” Maria replied sarcastically.
The two headed to the car and quickly got in. As they were driving Max’s thoughts went back to the conversation that they had shared back at his house. Max had always thought of Maria as his best friend’s girlfriend more than anything, but he was slowly coming to realize that she might be really good for him too.
“We’re here!” Maria said, breaking Max out of his thoughts.
“Thanks for the ride, Maria. Now excuse me if you would, I have to go and check up on a certain patient of mine.”
“No problem, I understand.” Maria said while gesturing her friend in the direction of the hospital.
Max quickly ran through the double doors and was about to head into his office when he was stopped by two men dressed in black outfits.
“Dr. Evans?” One of the men asked.
“Yes, what may I do for you?” He replied.
“I’m Agent Jackson and this is Agent Matthews,” one of the men said while flashing him a badge saying that they were with the FBI. “We need to speak with one of your patients. Her name is Elizabeth Parker and I believe that she was brought in yesterday.”
“Yes sir, that is correct.” Max replied. “If you two gentlemen wouldn’t mind taking a seat in my office then I’ll go prep the patient for visitors. It’s standard procedure -- I’m sure you understand.”
“Actually, Dr. Evans, if you wouldn’t mind we’d like to see the patient now. Is there any way that we can do that?”
“I’m sorry, but we have to follow procedures. Especially when the patient is very hostile towards others. We can’t take any risks.”
“Okay, I guess we can wait for five minutes,” Agent Jackson finally agreed.
“Thank you, sir. I’ll be right back.”
As soon as Max was out of his office, he ran down the hallway towards Liz’s room. He knew that something wasn’t right here, and that those two men were definitely not with the FBI. Something was just off about them, and had they really been agents then they would have demanded to speak with Liz right then and there. They wouldn’t have waited for him to “prep” the patient. When the FBI wants something or someone then they go for it right then and there. They don’t wait for anyone or anything. He knew...it had happened a year ago with another patient of his.
“Max, where’s the fire?” Maria yelled as he flew by her.
“Maria! I need you to do me a favor.” Max said short of breath.
“Yeah, sure. What is it?”
“I’m going to sneak Liz out of this hospital. There are two men in my office who claim to be with the FBI, but something’s not right. I can feel it. I need you and Michael to meet me at the Holiday Inn just outside of town in three hours. Do you think you can do that?”
“Yeah, but are you sure about all of this?” Maria asked. She had never seen Max more scared and she was beginning to freak out herself.
“I’m going with my gut feeling here, and I know that something isn’t right. I plan on getting to the bottom of this and I can’t do that if something happens to her. I just need you to cover for me.”
“I understand, now go! Hurry! I‘ll take care of everything here.”
“Thanks Maria! And make sure that you’re not being followed tonight, okay? We just need to take every precaution possible,” Max blurted out before running off.
When he finally made it to Liz’s room he was surprised to see that the door seemed to be locked from the inside. However, he knew that that was impossible. No patient had a room with a lockable door. Once again, it was a safety precaution. The Doctors all needed to be able to barge into a room if there was an emergency.
Max looked around to see if there was anyone else in the hallway and once he knew that no one was, he quickly ran into the door using his right shoulder. A sharp pain ran down his side and he now knew why actors had stunt doubles to do this sort of thing for them. But that didn’t stop Max from continuing. He did it once more, and the door finally opened half way. Max stuck his head inside and saw that Liz’s bed was the only thing keeping him from getting in. As he tried squeezing through the narrow space, a jagged edge along the door cut across a good three inches of Max’s arm. He yelped out in pain, but didn’t allow it to slow him down any. He ran into the bathroom and saw Liz sitting on the floor.
“Come on, Liz! We’ve got to go.” Max yelled.
When she made no attempt to move, Max bent over and picked her up. He quickly carried her to the door and down the stairs. He passed Dr. Santos along the way, who asked Max what he was doing with the patient. However, Max had no time to explain himself. He just continued running until he was outside of the hospital putting Liz into the passenger side of his car. Max then got in himself and began to drive.

“Excuse me,” Agent Jackson asked as Maria walked by. “Where can we find Dr. Evans?”
“I believe he’s making his rounds. Why, is there anything I can do for you?”
“Yes, I believe there is. Could you show me where Liz Parker’s room is?”
“Sure, right this way,” Maria said as the men began to follow her. As Maria turned to the last hallway, she pointed to the door on the right. “That’s her room. Let me know if there’s anything more I can do for you two.”
Agent Jackson and Agent Matthews entered the room only to find it in disarray. Agent Jackson drew his weapon and searched the rest of the room only to see that Liz was no where to be found. He silently cursed out loud and ran outside.
“Where’s the patient?” He yelled to Maria.
“I don’t know where she is! Now put that gun away.” Maria replied calmly.
He did as he was told, but then turned and grabbed Maria by the hair. He yanked her head back sharply and ran a finger down the side of her face.
“If we don’t find her soon, then I will come back for you and your friend. That’s a promise that I plan on keeping.” Jackson said before leaving.
Maria began to shake as the men ran off, and she decided that she couldn’t wait another three hours before leaving. She had to do it soon. Her life was now in danger.
Maria headed towards her car when Dr. Santos stopped her.
“Where are you going?” He questioned.
“I’m leaving,” Maria replied not wanting to explain herself.
“I don’t know what’s going on with you and Dr. Evans, but this is not how professionals work. You guys can’t just leave whenever you feel like it.”
“Carl,” Maria said as she pushed him against a car, “you are not my boss, so don’t act like it. If Max and I need to leave, then we need to leave, okay?”
“You know that I could have you fired for this, right?” Carl said with a smirk on his face.
“You know what? Don’t bother...I quit!” Maria replied as she threw her badge on the ground before getting in her car and leaving.

Well, I did say that I may end up posting chapter 4 early in the morning, and I couldn't get an earlier than this! 2 AM! Lol' I just got back from playing pool and decided to post it before I forgot. So Enjoy!
Chapter 4 - Time to Talk
Max had been driving for twenty minutes now, and Liz continued to sit there staring out of her window like nothing had happened.
“Liz, I don’t know what’s going on, but I want you to know that I won’t let anything happen to you. I don’t even know if you can hear what I’m saying...I just needed to let you know that you’re safe with me. I’d die before letting anyone hurt you.”
Liz began screaming when Max said that, and he hastily pulled off to the side of the road. Once the car stopped, Liz opened the door and jumped out. She began running off in the direction they had come from, and Max quickly followed her. He was able to catch up to her, and once he did, he tackled her to the ground. Liz began kicking at him and Max had no other choice but to pin her to the ground so she was unable to move.
“What are you doing, Liz?” Max said out of breath. “If you go back there they’ll kill you!”
Liz looked deep into Max’s eyes before quietly replying, “That’s the point.”
**************
Maria quickly pulled into the driveway of Michael’s house and frantically jumped out of the vehicle while leaving the ignition on. As she approached the front of the house she noticed that the front door was left wide open. This was something Michael would never do, so Maria began to panic. She cautiously entered the house and noticed that everything was thrown around. It was then that Maria noticed some small blood spatter on the floor.
“Michael!” Maria screamed as she ran into the back room. There she saw Michael lying on the floor after having been badly beaten up. She quickly ran to him and helped him up onto his feet. “Can you walk?” She asked.
“Yeah, I think so.” Michael coughed.
Together they quickly made it to the car and Maria drove off without ever looking back.
**************
Max sat there for a moment in skepticism. He had been praying that Liz would open up and talk to him, but he never imagined that her first words would be directed towards wanting to let someone kill her. He now knew for sure that there was more to this story than what everyone else had believed.
“Liz, what are you talking about? If you know that they’ll kill you, then why would you want to go back there?”
Instead of replying, Liz just sat there staring into Max’s eyes. She raised her right hand to his cheek and she let it linger there for a moment before she quickly pulled away and once again tried to run off.
“Liz, stop fighting me! I don’t know what’s going on, or what happened to change the person that I once knew, but I refuse to let you run back to those two men. Don’t you get it? Can’t you see it? I lost you once before and I can’t go through that a second time. When you left, I became a mess. I refused to date again, and people that were once my friends started to drift away because I was always too depressing to be around. I’d stay up every night wondering where you were, who you were with, and even whether or not you were still alive! It tore me up inside and it changed my life forever.
Now I would let you go if you had really wanted to, because I love you too much to hold you here against your own free will, but that’s not even an option anymore now that I know that some people are out to kill you. So, are you willing to tell me everything that’s happened while you were gone, or would you prefer me to keep walking though this maze blindfolded until I end up falling on my ass?” It pained Max to speak to her like this, but she left him no other choice. He needed to know what he had gotten himself into, and he needed to know now. It wasn’t just their lives at stake, but also Michael’s and Maria’s. He had gotten them involved without even thinking of the worst possible outcome. All he had cared about was getting the love of his life back.
After a moment of silence, Liz finally nodded her head in agreement. “Not here though,” she whispered. “I’ll explain when we get to the hotel. It will be safer that way.” With that said, she picked herself up off the ground and walked back towards the car.
Max sat there for a moment still trying to absorb everything that had just happened. Did Liz just say a full sentence to him? Did she actually agree to tell him what had happened to her? Or was this all a figment of his imagination? Something that he wanted so badly that he finally began to see it?
Max finally quit asking himself questions and ran to the car. However, when he got there Liz was no longer in the passenger seat, but in the driver’s seat instead. He jumped into the seat next to her without asking questions, and once he did, Liz quickly pulled out onto the main road. She continued to drive without saying so much as a word, and instead of driving the speed limit of 65 miles an hour, she was hitting close to 80.
“Liz, I really think we should slow down. It won’t do us any good if we’re pulled over by the cops.” Max finally said as he took a look around.
“There aren’t any cops near by. Trust me,” Liz said while putting a pair of sunglasses on.
***************
“What exactly happened?” Maria asked as she reached her hand across the seat and gently touched Michael’s cheek.
“I’m not quite sure,” Michael began. “There was a knock at the door, and when I went to answer it these two men pushed their way inside. They demanded to know where Max was, and when I asked how they knew him, one of them pulled out a gun. He told me that they would be the ones asking the questions, not me, and then he hit me over the head with the gun. I fell to the ground and they began tearing the place apart. When I tried to stand up the other man grabbed me by the throat and pinned me against the wall. He told me that if I tried to help my friends in any way then I’d get the privilege of watching my girlfriend die before they killed me. He then punched me and broke my nose. Maria, have these guys seen you yet?” Michael asked, his voice laced with concern.
“Yeah,” Maria replied. She was gripping the steering wheel so hard that her knuckles began to turn white. “Earlier today Max ran past me and told me that he had to sneak Liz out of the hospital. He said that these two guys were after her, and that he didn’t believe them when they said they were with the FBI. Anyways, he told me to meet him at the Holiday Inn just outside of town and then took off. Once he left, the two men approached me and asked me to take them to Liz’s room. I did as they asked and then they pulled out a gun when they noticed that she wasn’t in her room.” Maria turned to look at Michael and saw the look of pure horror that was on his face. “It’s okay, baby, I’m fine.” Maria said while she reached for his hand.
“What happened next?” Michael asked.
“Well, I had told them to put the gun away, and they did. Then one of the men, Jackson, pulled me by the hair and told me that if they didn’t find Liz he would come after Max and I. What’s going on, Michael? Why would they want Liz so badly, that they’re willing to kill all of us just to get to her?”
“I’m not sure, Maria, I’m not sure. How far are we from the hotel?”
“About two minutes. It’s right here,” Maria replied as she made a right and pulled into the parking lot. She took a look around and noticed Max’s car over near the side of the hotel. She made her way over there and pulled into a space next to his.
Michael and Maria got out of the car and headed over to the stairs where they saw Max and Liz sitting. Maria ran over and pulled Max into a tight embrace and Michael looked at Liz cautiously. She looked back at him and slowly stood up and walked over to where he was. Max and Maria watched the two from a distance as Liz ran her hand along the side of his face trying to gauge how bad his injuries truly were. She shook her head and pulled Michael into a hug as a tear made it’s way down the side of her face. Michael was shocked, but not as shocked as Max was.
“What’s going on?” Maria whispered to Max.
“I’m not sure,” Max replied as he continued to watch Liz. “She started opening up after I told her that I’d die before letting anything happen to her, and that I needed to know what was going on before I got myself hurt.”
“That’s why, Max. She doesn’t want you to get hurt, therefore she’ll let you in on what’s been going on. You kind of gave her an ultimatum; to let you walk into this blindfolded, or to have her tell you what’s going on that way you’re a little more educated when you come face to face with Jackson and Matthews. Which, by the way, you were right about.” Maria said, her voice cracking.
“What happened?” Max asked concerned.
“They threatened me and said that they’d be back for you and me if they couldn’t find Liz. I left the hospital and went to grab Michael, and when I got there his house was in disarray. I ran in and noticed blood, and when I found him on the floor in his room he had been badly beaten. According to him they hit him over the head with a gun, broke his nose, and threatened to kill me in front of him before they finished him off as well.” Maria replied while continuing to watch Michael, tears forming in her eyes. “What’s going on, Max? Why do they want Liz? And why do they know so much about the four of us? I mean, they’ve obviously done their homework. They know about you and Liz, and they know about me and Michael.”
Max shook his head letting Maria know that he didn’t have an answer to that. He went over to the area where Liz was still latched onto Michael and gently touched her shoulder. “Let’s go inside.”
Liz slowly nodded and followed them up to the hotel room where she was supposed to tell them everything that had happened. The thing was...how could she tell her old friends and a complete stranger everything that had happened to her just over a year ago? How could she tell them that she was torn away from the life that she loved to go play a big game of hide-and-seek across the United States? How could she explain to them that she got to witness her parents being brutally murdered, and then explain to them why they had been? How could she explain to Max that she hadn’t kept in contact with him because she was worried about his safety, and how could she tell them that they were probably now on the list to be murdered as well?

How could she explain to them that she got to witness her parents being brutally murdered, and then explain to them why they had been? How could she explain to Max that she hadn’t kept in contact with him because she was worried about his safety, and how could she tell them that they were probably now on the list to be murdered as well?

Chapter 5 - My Story
Max, Michael and Maria sat on the corner of the bed while Liz took a seat in a chair across from them. She took a deep breath and then began to talk.
“A little over a year ago my parents came to California to find me. I remember it as if it were yesterday,” Liz began as she got caught up in her own memory.
***************
“Mom, Dad! What are you guys doing here?” Liz asked as she entered her dorm room.
“There’s no time to explain, Elizabeth. We packed some of your things and we need you to come with us,” her father said urgently.
“I can’t just pick up and leave! What about school, what about my friends? What’s going on?”
Liz took a seat on the couch next to her mother and turned to look at her. That’s when she noticed the obvious fear in her eyes.
“You’re mother and I are in great danger, and we have reason to believe that you are as well,” Jeff tried to explain.
“I don’t get it, what kind of danger? What are you talking about?”
“You’re mother and I had gone out for our 24th anniversary dinner, and had decided to go to this fancy restaurant just down the street. Anyway, as soon as we arrived I heard a scream and I told your mother to stay in the car. She did as I asked, and when I went to see what had happened I saw a guy holding a gun, and a girl lying on the ground; covered in her own blood. I quickly made it back to your mother, and we called the police. The next day I was called in for questioning and they asked me if I’d be able to identify the man if I were to see him again. I told them that I had a clear view of the assailant, and that I would be able to point him out again. I was taken into this room, and sure enough, the man was standing against the wall in between these two other men. I pointed him out to the police and they asked me if I’d be willing to testify. Now I didn’t know what I was getting myself into at the time, and I agreed.”
“No, please tell me you didn’t!” Liz cried. She already knew where this was going and she didn’t like it one bit.
“I went to court, and because of my testimony the guy was sentenced to life. It turns out that they just needed a reason to throw this guy in jail. He was the leader a gang who had done everything from stealing money, to killing those that got in his way. It turns out that no one was ever willing to testify to anything until I had come along. Even the police would stay out of his way and let him do his own thing. People were that afraid of him and what he would do. So as your mother and I were leaving the court house, we were stopped by two guys; Jackson and Mathews. They said that they knew who we were, and that they knew who our family was. They then proceeded to tell me that I would regret testifying after they were through with me.”
“No, this can’t be true! Mom?” Liz sobbed.
“I’m sorry, honey, but it is. Your father and I are on the run, and you have to come with us. These guys have already followed us through two different states. We can’t leave you here by yourself, it’s not safe.”
“But they might not even know who I am,” Liz thought aloud.
“They do,” Jeff confirmed. “We barely escaped them last time, and your mother heard them talking about coming to find you as a way to make us come forth.”
Liz ran her hand through her hair as tears continued to fall down her cheek. “I have to say good-bye to Max.”
“Liz, you can’t! We don’t have the time!” Nancy argued.
“No, you don’t get it. If I just leave without saying good-bye then I will regret it for the rest of my life, however long that may be. I love him too much to just leave. You have to understand!”
Jeff looked at his daughter and it broke his heart to see her in so much pain. “Go, just be quick about it.”
***************
“And that’s when you came back to my place?” Max questioned.
Liz nodded and continued. “Only you weren’t there. So I decided to sit and wait, thinking about what I was going to say to you once you walked into the room. Five minutes later you came strolling in and you were in such a good mood, Max. It broke my heart knowing that I was about to hurt you, so I chickened out. Instead of saying good-bye I told you how much I loved you, and I left a note for you instead. One that explained that I had to leave.”
Maria had tears in her eyes and she hugged Michael tightly. It wasn’t fair how Liz’s life was ripped away from her, and it wasn’t fair how she and Max were torn apart the way that they were. However, Maria remained silent knowing that the worst was yet to be told.
“So what happened next?” Michael asked.
“My parents and I were on the run for about 13 months before they finally caught up to us,” Liz replied as tears formed in her eyes.
***************
“Dad, is it safe to stay here for another day?” Liz questioned. They usually only stayed in one spot for 24 hours before they were on the run again. However, this will be the third night in a row that they would be staying in this cabin.
“Yeah, everything will be fine.” Was Jeff’s only reply. “Honey, could you please go underground and check the batteries in the flashlights for me? We need to make sure that they stay charged.”
“Sure,” Liz replied as she moved the hidden panel and made her way under the cabin.
“Jeff, are you sure about this?” Nancy whispered as she moved the table over the area that Liz had just disappeared under.
“I’m sure, Nancy. Jackson and Mathews already know where we are, but they only know about you and I. At least this way Liz can still be safe. Why don’t you go under there with her?”
“No, Jeff. You and I are going to go together. At least this way I know I’ll be dying to save my baby girl,” Nancy choked.
“Mom? Dad? What’s going on?” Liz questioned as she tried to come back up. She looked through the small slits in the floor and saw the table that was blocking her from opening the panel.
“Liz, be quiet. Just stay under there for your Mother and I, okay?”
Liz heard the sadness in her father’s voice and she immediately began to panic. “No!” She cried. “You guys can’t leave me! We can run, we can still make it out of here!”
“No we can’t,” Nancy softly replied. “Someone will be by tomorrow morning to let you out. Just remember that we love you, baby. Your Father and I will always love you!”
Liz was about to reply when she heard the door being kicked in. She then crouched down to the ground in hopes that they wouldn’t be able to see her through the cracks in the floor.
“Well, what do we have here?” The man known as Jackson asked as he approached Nancy.
“What in the hell do you think you’re doing?” Jeff growled.
“Not so fast,” Mathews said as he punched Jeff in the stomach, effectively knocking the wind out of him. “You stay right here and watch.”
Jackson moved towards Nancy and threw her on the table. “Don’t worry sweetheart, I’m sure you’re going to enjoy this!” He said as he began tearing at her clothes. Once she was nude he roughly grabbed at her breast and she yelled out in pain.
Liz had a perfect view to what he was doing, and a tears formed in her eyes. How could someone be so cruel?
“Please! Just leave her alone!” Jeff cried out. “It’s me you want, not her!”
Mathews punched Jeff across the jaw and threw him on the floor. “You shut up now, you hear? We can make this much worse for her if you keep it up.”
Jeff slowly nodded his head as Jackson began pulling down his pants. Nancy cried out when Jackson roughly forced himself into her, and he slapped her across the face. “I don’t want to hear any of that, you hear?”
Nancy slowly nodded her head and concentrated on Jeff. This would be the last time that she’d see him alive, and she was praying that her baby girl wasn’t watching everything that was going on.
Her prayer, however, fell on deaf ears because Liz was indeed watching everything that was taking place. She was closely watching every move that the two men made, making sure to remember everything that these guys were doing to her parents. She had every intention on making them pay one way or another for the hell that they put her and her family through. She did, however, cover her mouth to keep her sobs from being heard. She looked down to wipe her tears away when she felt something wet drop onto the top of her head. She wiped at it with her hands, and when she looked down she noticed that her hands were now stained with blood. Her mother’s blood.
“No!” She heard her father yell out as he ran towards Nancy’s lifeless body. “You didn’t have to kill her, she didn’t do anything! I was the one who testified! I was the one who got your leader tossed in jail!”
“Leader tossed in jail? What in the hell are you talking about?” Jackson questioned as he pulled his pants back up. “You know who we are, who we’re working for, and we told you that you and your family were going to pay! I just wish you could be there when we go after that daughter of yours.”
“You leave my daughter out of this!” Jeff yelled.
“Sorry, but I don’t think that will happen. You fucked with our family, now we fuck with yours.”
Mathews quickly pulled out a hand gun and shot Jeff in the head three times.
***************
“I sat there covered in my parents blood for nine hours before somebody finally came and let me out. I guess my parents told this person that they were locking me in the basement for the night to protect me from something. However, when the person finally released me and saw me covered in blood, they called the cops. You see, Jackson and Mathews moved my parents bodies and cleaned up all of the blood to hide their tracks. So seeing me drenched in someone else’s blood didn’t go over too well with them. When the police began to question me, I wouldn’t talk and I was eventually sent to a psychiatric ward. Three months after that I found myself being transferred to Memorial where I saw you again. It wasn’t that I didn’t know how to talk like you all believed,” Liz said as she stared into the eyes of her teary friends. “I just couldn’t. I knew that talking was what got my parents into trouble, and I didn’t want to drag any of you into this as well. That’s why I wish that you would have just let them kill me, Max. Because now they’re going to be coming after you three as well!”
Liz began to break down and cry and Max quickly rushed to her side and hugged her. He had no idea what was going to happen next, but he knew that he had to get himself and his friends out of this motel quickly. From what Liz just told him, it was quite obvious that Jackson and Mathews were quite the hunters, and who knew how long it’d be before those two figured out where they were hiding.

Hey guys,
I swear that I didn't forget about the update that was supposed to have happened, but something came up. An old friend of mine is in jail for something that had gone on, and I'm just a little busy trying to contact someone. I promise that it will be out by Satuday. A little late, I know, but I have to do this first. Sorry guys!
