Summary: Starting off at the ending of ‘The Many Changes of Love’, this fic will basely be upon Max and Liz, dealing with their struggles to heal.

WARNING: This Fic is full of angst and at times the characters will make uncharacteristic decisions that may anger the reader. You are reading this fic at your own risk. I’m asking that if you have any opinions that are not constructive criticism…please keep them to yourself. Thank you

*Note: There will be some leaping through time. One week here… three weeks here… six months here… then you’ll be rewinding back time through some conversations or incidents, so don’t get confused ;)

Forward:
Through The Rain

When you get caught in the rain,
With nowhere to run,
When you're distraught and in pain,
Without anyone.
When you keep crying to be saved,
But nobody comes,
And you feel so far away,
That you just can't...

Find your way home.
You can get there alone.
It's okay.
What you say is...

I can make it through the rain.
I can stand up once again.
On my own. And I know,
That I'm strong enough to mend.
And every time I feel afraid,
I hold tighter to my faith.
And I live one more day,
And I make it through the rain.

And if you keep falling down,
Don't you dare give in.!
You will arise, safe and sound.
So keep pressing...

On steadfastly,
And you'll find what you need,
To prevail.
What you say is...

I can make it through the rain.
I can stand up once again.
On my own. And I know,
That I'm strong enough to mend.
And every time I feel afraid,
I hold tighter to my faith.
And I live one more day,
And I make it through the rain.

And when the wind blows,
And shadows grow close,
Don't be afraid.
There's nothing you can't face.
And should they tell you,
You'll never pull through,
Don't hesitate.
Stand tall and say...

I can make it through the rain.
I can stand up once again.
On my own. And I know,
That I'm strong enough to mend.
And every time I feel afraid,
I hold tighter to my faith.
And I live one more day,
And I make it through the rain.

And I can make it through the rain,
And stand up once again.
And I'll live one more day,
And I, I can make it through the rain.
Oh yes, you can.
You're gonna make it through the rain…

A Few Days Later

Liz watched, soberly as, Alex pushed a smiling Amelia on the swing. Being as though it was six in the morning, the play ground was deserted. Ava had been in a sound sleep when Liz had decided to take the kids to the park. It had been a rough couple of days for all of them. Alex had been waking up crying from nightmares. He kept dreaming about that night, about Tess, about Kivar. Amelia wasn’t much better either. Liz couldn’t walk into the bathroom without being followed and she might as well forget about doing errands without Amelia’s company.

This morning, she had awakened to Alex’s cries from her old room. Climbing out of bed, Liz had almost tripped over Amelia’s unconscious body. Jerking awake, Amelia had frantically grabbed for Liz’s hand. Upon entering her old bedroom room, Liz had immediately climbed into bed, pulling Alex into her arms. Ava had remained sound asleep as Liz held both Amelia and Alex. She had never wanted this for them. I would give anything to take away their pain she thought and she would. After a few moments, Alex had finally settled down Liz had then suggested that they take a walk in the park for some much needed fresh air and here they were.

Sitting back, Liz watched as Amelia giggled. As much fighting and teasing Alex and Amelia put each other through, they still had a bond of love that was unbreakable. Sunlight beaming brightly through the trees, Liz thought about her home in Clovis. There was no doubt she was staying in Roswell. She would have to pack up and clean, put the house up for rent: that is if Ava decided to stayed in Roswell, put her furniture in storage, enroll Amelia and Alex into Roswell Elementary: this coming school year, pack her classroom up, say goodbye to her coworkers and friends, and manage to stay sane while doing it.

Liz dreaded the up and coming confrontation with her mother. Nancy would be arriving back from her sister’s home right about now. She couldn’t comprehend the fact that most if not all of her life, she was lied to. That these people, who she trusted most in the world had lied to her so easily, had denied her the information of who she really was. She comprehend that these people who called themselves her parents, her mom and dad, weren’t really her parents. For the past three or four days, Liz’s wounds had been festering. Why did they do it? Why had they kept the truth from her? Liz needed these questions answered, immediately. Who was she? Was she Latanya or Liz? Were they her parents or something less?

These questions had been running a circle through her mind since that day in the warehouse. Running a hand through her short locks, she watched as Amelia and Alex held hands before making their way towards her. “What’s wrong?” Amelia and Alex glanced at each other before looking to Liz. “We’re ready to go.” Alex whispered, exhaustedly, with a sad smile. Liz smiled sadly as well before nodding. Alex hadn’t been the same since that day. He was more subdued some how, quiet. He rarely smiled or laughed, anymore. It was if her rambunctious son had disappeared into this somber young boy, who was never quite there. Liz didn’t know what to do.

Arriving at the Crash Down, Liz found the door unlocked. Looking to the street, she spotted Nancy’s green mini- van. Upon entering, the kids went immediately to a booth. “You guys hungry?” They both nodded with small smiles. “Ok, what do you wanna eat?” “Cereal…” Alex whispered before laying his head upon his arms. “Pancakes…” Amelia joined excitedly. “Ok… I’ll be right back.” Making the kids’ breakfast, Liz thought about what she would say to her mother. She entered the Crash Down, moments later, to find Ava sitting with the kids. “Hey…” “Hey…your mom’s here. She’s upstairs unpacking.” Liz took deep breath, nodded her understanding. “Would you mind, Ava?” Ava shook her head, “No…go right ahead, yo. The kids will be fine.” Liz nodded her thanks before making her way upstairs.

She found Nancy in her bedroom unpacking, exactly as Ava said. Looking up upon Liz’s entrance, Nancy smiled in greeting before walking over to her for a hug. When Liz didn’t return the hug, Nancy frowned in worry before stepping back. “Is everything ok, sweetie?” Liz glared at her mother, shaking her head. “No everything’s not ok, mom. How could you? How could you have lied to me?” Nancy was baffled as she took a step towards Liz, only to stop as her daughter took a step back. “What? What are you talking about Liz?” “No…” Liz whispered in anguish, holding out her palms to halt Nancy’s concern. “Stop just stop lying to me. You know exactly what I’m talking about.” Nancy shook her head in denial, before the realization struck her dead in the eyes.

Stumbling back, Nancy hit the edge of the bed, shaking her head. “No? Does Latanya ring a bell?” Liz asked somberly as her mother’s face turned paper white. “Liz…I can explain.” “No... Thank you. I already know the story. I just wanna know why? Why, for the past twenty six years, I’ve been living a lie. Why my ‘so’ called parents couldn’t clue me in to the fact that they weren’t my parents, that I was some one else?” Nancy broke down in tears, then. “I’m sorry…”

“What are you sorry for mom? Are you sorry because for lying to me or getting caught lying to me? No don’t say you can explain because I really can’t believe anything you have to say right now!” Liz finished, turning to leave. Then another realization suddenly hit her. Turning around, Liz looked at her mother before whispering. “Oh god… did you also lie about dad’s death too? He didn’t really die peacefully did he?” Nancy shook her head in answer “I’m so sorry, Liz…” Liz nodded, a true look of betrayal on her face before she left the kitchen. Nancy cried silently as she watched Liz walked away.

Across town:

Driving up to Sheriff Valenti’s home, Max’s hands shook as he beeped the horn for Zan. What was he going to say? How was he going to tell his son that Tess was dead and that he was the cause? These questions had been running rampantly through his mind for the past few days as he arranged Tess’s funeral; and went over a cover story with Michael and the Sheriff. The Sheriff had arranged for it to be in the paper today. Max had read it this morning, as he packed up her clothing with everyone’s help.

It was brief but it said as much as this: Roswell resident, Tess Evan’s was instantly killed on Wednesday morning in a freak accident outside of Roswell, New Mexico. Tess Evans’s Tan blazer was found smashed into a small river creak. The Sheriff is ruling this as an accident. It was witnessed by another driver that Tess’s car went out of control, swerving in front of an oncoming car. Trying to avoid a crash, Mrs. Evans flew down a rock incline before driving into the river. She is survived by a son, Alexander Evans, and by a husband, Max Evans. Ms. Evans’s funeral will take place next Friday at 12 pm.

Honking his horn one more time, Max waited. Finally Zan ran out smiling, followed by a waving Ms. Deluca. Max waved, in return, as Zan hopped into the pickup. “Hey dad…” “Hey sport, have a nice time?” Max asked, driving off. “Yeah, we went to the fair. Then Sheriff Valenti took us roller skating.” Max smiled sadly at his son’s chatter. Pulling onto the highway to the Pod chamber, he drove listening intently to Zan’s excitement. “Where are we going?” Zan asked suddenly as he glanced out of the window. “To the desert…” “To practice my powers?” Zan interrupted excitedly. Max remained silent, not exactly answering the question.

Finally at their destination, Zan took in their surroundings. There was nothing but sand and rock. He looked to his dad who was looking at him. “Dad…?” Hopping out of the pickup, Max walked around to Zan’s side. “Let’s walk…” Zan nodded as he climbed down from the truck. “Okay.” Walking for a few moments in silence, Max was trying to figure out how to break this to his son. “Dad…” “Zan…you know that I love you right?” Zan, bewildered, nodded his head. “Yeah…I love you, too dad.” “And you know that no matter what I’ll always be here right?” “Yeah…” Sighing, Max stopped down to look into his son’s eyes. “Zan… no matter what… always remember that your mother loved you and that if given the choice… this would not have happened!” “What are you talking about dad?” “Zan…there’s been an accident…”

Tess’s Funeral:

Max stood beside his son, holding his hand, as Tess’s casket was lowered into the earth. Zan watched, bleakly, as his mother was buried. He felt nothing but coldness... a suffocating coldness. Standing stock still, he watched as everyone said their goodbyes. His mom was dead and he couldn’t cry. Why couldn’t he cry? That would be so much better than this. Max watched Zan’s still expression in worry. He wouldn’t eat, sleep, nothing. Max had tried everything to get through to Zan… next to force feeding him but nothing would work. He looked as if he had lost weight, his cheeks were sunken in, and his usual animated green eyes were blank: devoid of life.

Max had despised lying to Zan about his Tess’s death. But neither could Max tell his son of what really happened. Zan upon hearing about his mother’s death, a week ago, had slowly backed away from Max, shaking his head in denial. Max, silently in tears, had tried to comfort Zan, only to be rebuffed. He hadn’t spoken a word to Max since then. It was if his son were being buried right along side Tess, leaving behind this pale somber boy in his shadow. Max glanced around to see only a few Roswell residents had come to Tess’s funeral, including Isabel and Michael.

Max had had a hard time convincing them to attend. But they had given in for Zan’s sake. Max had refused to even make the mistake of asking Kyle, Maria, or Liz to the funeral. They had been through to much on the account of his sins. He wouldn’t ask this of them. There were a few High School acquaintances that had come but that was it. Tess had never cared for humans, especially as friends. At that moment, Isabel and Michael came over. “How’s he doing?” Michael asked as they watched Isabel hug Zan. “Not so good. Thanks for coming though.” Michael nodded in understanding.

Leading Zan back to the Pickup, Max noticed a bright yellow Beetle parked a few cars behind them. “Max… why don’t you guys c’mon by for lunch sometime this week?” Isabel suggested climbing into her car. “Thanks Iz, we’ll be there.” Max replied, distractedly as helped Zan into the pickup. Moving around to the other side, Max spotted Liz, Amelia, and Alex coming from the other direction. Wearing a black chenille sweater coat and jeans with her hair tied up in a small pony tail, she looked exhausted. The kids held both held her hands as they walked towards the car. Amelia’s gaze looked up as if sensing his gaze before smiling. Alex looked up as well, following his sister’s gaze and frowned fiercely. Liz, oblivious to Max’s gaze, made her way to the yellow beetle.

Getting Liz’s attention, Amelia pointed to Max in excitement. She looked up and met Max’s eyes across the distance. She stalled, momentarily, before opening the driver’s side door. Liz hadn’t seen Max since last week. He had been busy with Tess’s funeral and Zan. Liz had also been busy with Alex, Amelia, and her thoughts. After a week, she still didn’t think this was a very good time for them to talk. Giving him a small smile, Liz closed the car door behind Amelia. She knew what was going through Max’s mind right now. ‘Where did this leave them?’ Liz honestly didn’t know and wasn’t really ready to find out either. Her life was titled chaos at the moment; she didn’t have the time nor energy necessary to deal with Max and the thought of them.

A few Days later:

“Maybe you should let her explain…” Liz shook her head in denial. “No. I can’t stand being to be lied to again, Maria.” Maria sighed, rubbing her tummy. “Look Lizzie, just let her explain. Maybe there’s a reason they lied to you for so long. I’m not saying that I agree with what they did. I’m just saying that maybe you should just hear her out.” Liz sighed, broodingly, watching as Amelia, Alex, Annabelle, and Alex colored at the next table. Ava was at the moment upstairs watching T.V and relaxing. Her mother had gone grocery shopping.

The diner was all but empty except for a few customers. The breakfast rush was now long over. Taking her break, Liz had plopped down across from Maria and put up her feet. The conversation had started out about how Maria couldn’t wait for the day when she gave birth, then it had headed towards Alex and Amelia’s birth, then it had turned to how fast time went, and then it turned into a direction Liz dreaded: Nancy Parker. She knew Maria was right. But she wanted to be angry. She had a right to be angry. Deep down Liz knew she was afraid. She was afraid of what she was going to learn from her mother’s explanation. She was afraid of the pain she would feel after the anger was stripped away.

Sighing, Liz took a big bite of blueberry pie and almost choked on it upon Max’s arrival. Wearing a dark blue thermal with dark stonewash jeans, Max looked down right rugged. His dark shaggy brown hair curled around his neck and his face was neatly shaven. Walking over to the counter, he ordered a cup of coffee and a chocolate milk to go before turning around to meet Liz’s gaze with a small smile. Walking over to the kids, Max suggested something to the kids that made them all laugh in delight that is except for Alex who instead frowned. “Liz get up and go say to the man. He looks too good this morning to be ignored. Ohmigod…look how he’s looking at you.” Maria whispered, grinning. Liz couldn’t help but blush. “Maria…” “Go and say hi, Liz. Life is too short.” Liz rolled her eyes before obeying, just to get away from Maria. She took in a deep breath as she stood. She was only going to say hi, damn it. Nothings changed. So why was she so out of breath and blushing?

Max watched Liz as she made her way towards him. She was absolutely beautiful when she blushed. Max had missed that about her the most. Who was he kidding? He had missed her, period. He knew he had about much blew any chance of a future with her but he had to try at least one more time… to show her how much he had loved her then and how much he loved her now. He had to convince her that his mistakes were just that mistakes. Max couldn’t take them away… couldn’t change them as much as he tried but he could make it up to her. It wouldn’t be easy and he probably wouldn’t succeed so much as make it worse. But he had to try.

“Hey…” Liz smiled, slightly. “Hey.” Max breathed. “Excuse me…” The waitress interrupted from across the counter. “Thanks.” Max smiled, grabbing the cup of coffee and chocolate milk. The young waitress nodded with a seductive smile before walking away. Liz smiled, taking the money out of his palm,” I’ll take that…” Following her over to the cash register, Max glanced outside to Zan’s still body in the pickup, waiting. Noticing the direction of his gaze, Liz asked in concern, “How is he?” “Not so good. He refuses to eat…” Liz breathed, “Oh god, I’m so sorry, Max. Alex and Amelia aren’t doing to well either.” “What?” “Alex has nightmares and Amelia has a fear of me leaving and never coming back. Isn’t it ironic how it’s the kids who always pay for their parents’ mistakes and choices…?”

Max felt as if the guilt would eat away at his insides. He had never really taken into consideration how this week might’ve affected Alex and Amelia but now he knew. “Listen… the reason I came by is…Is to ask if maybe I could spend sometime with the kids tomorrow and… maybe this weekend?” He asked nervously while scratching behind his ear. Liz looked over to the table where her kids were seated and thought about it. She didn’t want Max to feel as though he couldn’t be apart of the kids’ lives because he could but in the same instance Liz wasn’t really ready to let them out of her sight. “Max… you don’t have to ask if you want to spend time with them…just make sure to tell me ahead of time.” Max nodded, predicting what was going through Liz’s head by her expressions. She was scared. She didn’t trust him. “Liz…why don’t you come with us…” “What? No. I can’t do that, Max. You guys need some alone together.” “Are you sure?” Max asked. “Positive…I want you to know them and… I want them to know you. What time should they be ready?”

That Night

After tucking both Amelia and Alex in for the night, Liz finished locking up the diner and turning off all the lights. Keeping busy, she tried not to think of her up and coming conversation with her mother. But to her misfortune, it had been on her mind all day. Climbing the stairs, Liz’s gaze traveled down the hall to see that her mother’s bedroom light was still on. Well, Liz thought, it was now or never. Controlling her shaking hands, Liz quietly knocked. “Come in” Nancy called from the other side of her door.

Opening the door, Liz came upon the sight of her mother reading in bed. “Hey, I had thought you’d already be in bed.” She shook her head, “No.” Nancy nodded with a sad smile. There was a tense silence, then. “Liz…why don’t you come and sit down. So we can talk.” “No that’s okay. I’ll just sit over here.” Liz responded motioning to her father’s old recliner. “Okay…” Nancy smiled, trying to disguise the pain. “What do you want to know, Liz?” Liz sat silently for a few moments before answering. “Every thing”

Nancy nodded, “Ok… well where do I start? You were born to Prince Rainer and Princess Kiara of Wideran. You were a beautiful child and unfortunately the only. They were very protective of you. I was your nanny and Kiara’s best friend. When you were murdered, Kiara went into a deep depression. She couldn’t take your death and blamed King Zan. Your father was just as bad. He was obsessed with bringing you back. The scientist and father in him went to the ends of the Antar to clone you. Actually out of the Royal Five you were first to be cloned and sent to earth. Jeff and I were on that ship with you. No one was to know about your presence on earth. Kiara and Rainer made sure of that. But somehow the secret came out while we were still on the ship and Kivar had the remaining Royal four cloned.” Liz interrupted, confused, “I thought that it was Max and Isabel’s parents who cloned them?”

Nancy shook her head, “No, sweetie, that was a mind warp. A part of Kivar’s plan to get the heir. But he made a big mistake, seeing as though it’s not Zan who is the heir but Alex…” “What? How can that be? Zan’s the first born.” “Yes Zan’s the first born but you’re the true queen. After King Zan divorced and banned Ava, and married you, there was a meeting between the counsel and King Zan. Ava, being the trader that she was, was pregnant at the time and it was said that her child could not be the heir being as though she was no longer the Queen and a banned trader. So that being said, the first child that you and Zan were to have would be the heir and that hasn’t changed.” “So Alex is the heir?” Nancy nodded with a proud smile.

“After having found out his mistake, though, Kivar sent out a full search for you but by that time you were already gone. He went into a full rage…in the end killing Jeff. This way you would have no choice but to come back.” Liz nodded in understanding, then another thought dawned. “If Kivar was already leader…why did he need Max’s heir?” “Because Kivar isn’t the true king but a dictator. Everyone has someone to answer to someone on Antar and Kivar wasn’t any different. The counsel was livid with anger during the war. But they decided not to intervene, seeing as though King Zan wasn’t in a very good state of mind to rule anyway. So… they sat back and watched but they did have a request of Kivar. There had to be an heir and it had to be Zan’s if he were to rule. By that time, the former King of Antar had already been beheaded…” “Why didn’t you ever think to tell me this?” Nancy went quiet, then, before answering.

“There were a lot of reasons. There was your protection as the Queen to take into thought. Then there was the thought of having to go back to Antar and lose you. We had tried for so long to have children. But it couldn’t happen. Once we landed on Earth, met Claudia, and started a life we had decided that it would be best if you didn’t know. Rainer and Kiara had sent you down here for the simple reason of living in peace…” “So Grandma Claudia…” “We met her in the desert on one of her excavations. She was alone and it was dark out. She took us in…and fell in love with you.”

Liz just sat there in silence, taking everything in. “Why didn’t I remember all of this before now?” “There’s two ways for you to remember: with your mate’s help and with the help of someone ‘really’ powerful. Rainer and Kiara had wanted you to live normally. So upon cloning you they put something in your DNA so you couldn’t remember. But of course something back fired and they had only stopped you from remembering temporarily. See… your alien side was dormant for most of your life, making you human. But when Max saved you that day…oh yes Liz I know about that? He opened the door to your alien side.”

Finishing, Nancy tried to see what Liz was thinking. “So that’s it then…” Liz sighed emotionally exhausted. Standing up, “I think that’s enough for tonight…” “Liz…” “I’m looking for a place to stay. We should be gone before the month is up.” “Liz…please.” “No…just don’t say anything. God… I can’t even call you mom. I wish I could tell you that every thing is ok…but it’s not. I might understand why you did what you did but that doesn’t stop it from hurting. You lied to me and it wasn’t little white either. My whole life you couldn’t give me a hint about who I was because it would inconvenience you. I’m so tired and confused I just wish you could’ve told me sooner.” Liz finished, leaving the room.

At nine on the dot the next morning, Max pulled up across the street from the Crash Down. Zan sat in silence, giving his father a questioning look. “What are we doing here? I told you I wasn’t hungry.” Zan muttered, glaring at the Crash Down entrance. Max sighed, rubbing his jaw, while hiding his smile of relief. This was the first time Zan had actually spoken to Max in a week. “We’re not here for the food. We just came to get Amelia and Alex.” He watched as Zan’s green eyes turned their glare on him.

“Why?” “I told you last night why…” “We’re not just here because of them are we? You’re here to see her.” He answered, with a glare of accusation. Max didn’t deny it, knowing it would just be another be a lie. So he just asked, “You wanna come in or stay in the truck?” He remained silent for a few moments before muttering, “I’ll stay here.” Max nodded, in anxiety. Zan watched, in tears, as his dad crossed the street, entering the Cafe. He hated Liz Parker. He hated his dad for lying to him, and most of all he hated knowing the truth.

In the Crash Down, a few minutes earlier, Alex sat in a booth with his head cradled in his arms. He was going to see his dad today. Alex didn’t know whether to be wary or jump for joy. He had so many mixed feelings towards Max Evans. On one hand, he was excited to finally have a father; but on the other he was wary, that by getting too close, his dad in result would become closer to his mom, hurting her in the process. Alex plainly didn’t trust his father when it came to his mom.

Across the diner, Amelia sat on a stool as her mother tenderly brushed her hair back into a pony tail. She was so excited. She was finally going to see her dad. Amelia couldn’t wait for her new project to come into affect. Project: Mom and dad. Alex didn’t know about it, simply because he had a big mouth and would tell mom. Amelia knew Alex didn’t care for their mom and dad being together. And at first neither did she but then she connected to her mom and saw everything.

“What’cha thinking about, Princess?” Liz asked with a smile. Amelia gave her mother an innocent smile. “Oh nothing…” Liz didn’t buy it. She had seen that smile too many times on her daughter’s face when she was up to something, that something usually meaning playing a nasty prank on Alex. But Liz didn’t have the chance to comment on it because at that exact moment Max entered the Crash Down. “Hey…” He greeted with a small smile. Hair ruffled from the wind, Max stood before her in jeans and a v-neck t-shirt. “Good morning…” Liz smiled, meeting his eyes, before turning towards her kids. She felt the tension in Alex and stooped down to hug him.

“You know the number, right?” Alex nodded, looking between his father and mother, in worry. Liz smiled, reassuringly, before standing. “Ok have fun. Amelia…Alex, I warn you to behave.” She said sternly while kissing Amelia on the forehead. Max watched, uneasily. He felt as if he were intruding. Turning around, Liz gave Max a small smile. “What time will they be home?” “Around six, if that’s okay” He asked nervously. “Okay, that’s fine with me.”“We need to talk, Liz.” Max said suddenly, surprising her. “Ok…” “Can I come by around twelve-thirty tomorrow? I have to go to work but that’s usually when I take my lunch break.” Liz, nodded, taking a deep breath in dread. She knew what that talk would entail: them. “Ok…you want me to drop by or…” Ushering the kids to the door, Max looked back. “I’ll pick you up.”

Back in the pickup, Zan watched as his dad and Amelia held hands across the street. His gaze, then, went to Alex. Alex had his hands stuffed into his pockets and was watching his dad intently with a small smile. This was his brother and sister. He had always wanted brothers and sisters but not from someone other than his parents. Zan didn’t know how to respond to them. Should he hate them because they were Liz Parker’s kids and not his mother’s? Or should he just be happy that he had a brother and a sister? He didn’t know. As they came up upon the Pickup, Zan heard Alex ask in wonder if that was really his dad’s truck. Zan decided that the first one would do. He remained silent as his dad told him to scoot over for Amelia and Alex.

Climbing in, Max gave Zan a worried glance before starting the engine. As they pulled off, Alex glanced at Zan’s stiff profile before staring out the window. There was tense silence in the cab as they made their way to Max’s house. Amelia sat, uneasily, peeking at Zan from under lashes. Tears silently fell down her cheeks as she realized she had killed Zan’s mommy. Turning toward his sister’s whimpers, Alex glared in concern. Communicating through each other’s mind, Alex asked. “What’s your problem, Amelia?” Amelia, guiltily, met Alex’s glare with tears in her eyes.

“I killed Zan’s mommy…” “You dummy, stop it. If you hadn’t killed her then she would’ve killed us. You saved our mom. So don’t cry.” Alex scolded as he watched his sister rub her tears away. Both Max and Zan noticed this but kept silent. Max remained silent, having noticed Amelia’s change of attitude once they were driving, knowing exactly what was taking place. He wouldn’t intrude though, especially in front of Zan. He would have a talk with them later, reassuring them that everything would be alright. Zan watched in awe and envy at Alex and Amelia’s connection. He wanted that, too, but then he remembered his oath to hate them. So, Zan remained eerily silent during the drive home.

Arriving a few minutes later, Max parked. “Anyone hungry?” “Me…” Amelia whispered with a smile. “Amelia, you ate this morning.” Alex complained. “I know that. But I didn’t finish it. I was too nervous.” Amelia answered, giving Alex a glare. Max shook his head in amusement before exciting the cab. Taking Amelia’s hand, Alex made an inspection of the house. It was big, bigger than their house in Clovis. “Are you rich?” Max turned toward Alex with a grin. “Not exactly…” “Oh.” Alex said disappointedly. Zan stood to the other side of his dad, frowning. Upon entering, Zan ran upstairs to his room slamming the door behind him.

Alex and Amelia gave each other a look before turning to their dad. Max’s attention was on the boy upstairs. He had thought that with Alex and Amelia here Zan would come out of his shell a little. There was no use in going up to talk to him. Zan would just ignore him, retreating into his shell more. Sighing, he gave Amelia and Alex a sad smile. “What do you want to eat?” “Ummm blueberry pancakes.” Amelia stated tilting her head to the side with a smile. Laughing softly, Max nodded. “Pancakes it is. Alex?” Max followed Alex gaze up the steps. “No thanks…Can I go up?” He asked, absently, before giving Max a questioning look. “Sure…go ahead. Zan’s room is the second on the right. I’ll be in the kitchen. Just be warned, Zan is not himself.” Alex nodded. Max smiled before ruffling his son’s hair. Max just couldn’t believe that Alex and Amelia were his. Alex reminded Max so much of Michael as a boy. “Ok…you going up to Amelia?” “No I think I’ll stay down here with you.”

Alex made his way up the steps taking everything in. The hall held two paintings: one of his dad, Zan, and that evil lady; and one of just Zan as a baby. Sneakers squeaking on the hardwood, Alex went to open the first door. The room was huge. There was a bare four poster bed and dressers covered with sheets. “You’re not supposed to be in there. Get out.” A voice commanded from behind him in rage. Alex turned around to meet his brother’s anger. Nodding, silently, Alex closed the door. Zan gave the boy one more glare before going into his room. Alex followed. This room was much smaller than the other one. Neatly furnished with oak, the room held everything from toys, a computer, to a fish tank. “Wow…” Alex whispered in wonder. All he had was toys in his room and a stereo.

Mom said that he wasn’t allowed any pets, since the last one ended up in the dryer. “What are you doing? Get out.” Zan demanded as Alex made his way over to the computer. “Can I get on?” “No.” Alex shrugged before looking into the fish tank. “I said get out.” Zan stated, his frown growing darker “Oh, I thought you heard me too. I said ‘No’.” Opening the toy box, Alex inspected the toys. Picking up a remote control operated race car, Alex inspected it, before turning to his brother. “Can I play with this?” “No.” “Oh, stop having a temper tantrum. Didn’t your mom ever teach you how to ‘share with others?” Alex realized his mistake too late. Zan eyes darkened with anger and tears. “No but has your mom ever taught you to go away when you’re not wanted? Oh, I guess not since she hasn’t learned herself.” Alex took a threatening step, “What’s that suppose to mean?” “It means that my dad doesn’t want your mom, so she can stop begging like the dog she is…” Alex saw red, pushing Zan to the floor, ready do some damage.

Amelia was about to enter the room when she heard the argument. “Hey…” Alex and Zan cried out as they went skidding across the room in different directions. “Idiots…you’re both big idiots.” Amelia steamed as both boys stood, eyeing her warily. Zan took the first step to blast her. “Back off, Zombie Boy” Slamming him up against wall again with her powers, Amelia looked to Alex with a dangerous glint in her eyes. “You are so going to get when I tell mom…” “He started it” Alex cried out, while rubbing the back of his head. “And he had a right to…I get him. But don’t get you, Alex.” “What?” “His mom just died. What’s your reason?” Alex cried out, “He was talking about mom…” “I understand, Alex. God but… he’s our brother.”

Alex clenched his jaw in shame, looking to Zan. He had his eyes on Amelia with tears, “Fine, I’m sorry.” Amelia smiled at Alex before turning to Zan expectedly. “I’m sorry too.” He mumbled. She grinned before saying, “Now give each other a hug…” “What? No” Alex and Zan shrieked before grinning at each other in humor. “I ‘said’ give each other hugs.” Both boys obeyed, warily eyeing Amelia. Outside of the door, Max stood listening before silently making his way downstairs.

The day went, unfortunately, fast after that. Max served Amelia breakfast while boys played out in the yard. Max and Amelia then joined them before sitting down for lunch. Afterward, Max sat the kids down with a movie while he cleaned up. By the time the movie was over, Max dropped the kids off. Liz wasn’t there at the time. So, Max just left them with their grandmother with the promise of seeing them that weekend. Afterward, Max drove to his parents’ for dinner. “Did you have fun today?” Zan put on a frown, folding his arms before replying, a “No”.

*Here's the promised part. I'll be back later, enjoy

The Next day:

Walking through the park, Liz shifted awkwardly under Max’s scrutiny. “So uh… we haven’t been able to talk since…” “Uh yeah, I know. Things have been kind of hectic.” Max nodded in agreement, watching as Liz nervously avoided his eyes. He didn’t know what to say… to make things right. He sighed as he watched a couple kiss under a tree, a distance away. God, what was he going to say to her to make her believe he still loved her? He tried again.

“So…what can you do as far as powers?” Staring at the ground, Liz’s gaze jerked up to meet Max’s before she smiled. “Well… I can manipulate molecular structures as you guys like to call it… I can also do this.” She giggled at Max’s stunned gaze as she communicated to him through her mind. “Wow…” “I know.” “What else can you do?” Max asked after a moment of companionable silence. Liz gave a pause, losing her smile in the process. “I can also tell the future, now and again… for example Alex’s kidnapping.” Liz finished, watching soberly as Max’s body suddenly halted to a complete stop. “What?”

Finding a nearby bench, Liz plopped down on it in utter exhaustion. Max followed, watching her closely. “The dreams started early on in my pregnancy. At first I just thought they were dreams. I saw your wedding. I saw Alex and Amelia even before I knew I was having twins and I saw that day…” Max interrupted, then, in a whisper of dismay. “Why didn’t you tell me, Liz?” She bit her lip then in tears before meeting his eyes before turning away.

“I tried numerous times but…but you were otherwise preoccupied. I didn’t know what to do. You were with Tess but, again, I tried… that day at lunch when you drove off with Tess… that day at your apartment when I told you to go to hell… I tried Max. I really did.” “Liz…” He interrupted in remorse, slowly tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear, as she continued to stare into oblivion.

“I’m so sorry for everything I put you through.” Wiping her tears away quickly, Liz met Max’s eyes with a small smile. “It’s okay, Max. I’m okay. Anyway…after that day at your apartment I realized that Roswell was no longer the place for me. So, I left, thinking that maybe if I left, things would change.”

They sat in silence as they watched cars drive down Main Street. Max ran a hand through his hair thinking about that day Liz left, that day she came to his apartment. ‘That day’ was a mind warp that never happened. “I’m so confused, Liz. Everything I thought was true…I don’t know what to do anymore. Zan …he’s breaking down right before my eyes. And I can’t do a damn thing to stop it… Alex and Amelia…I’ve missed out on so much with them and it’s my fault. And then… there’s you. All these years, I’ve been living in a mind warp. I believed I was the innocent, the one wronged. But it was me who was wrong all along. And despite knowing every thing I put you through… I want you in my life… and not as a friend. I can’t stop thinking about you…dreaming about you. Even after all these years you’re still my dream girl, Liz.”

Tears coursed down Liz’s face as she continued to watch as cars went past. Meeting Max’s intense hazel eyes filled with tears, Liz smiled sadly. “Max…we’re not meant to be…” “No… you’re wrong we are meant to be Liz. I can’t stop thinking about our past… our wedding day… our honeymoon… we were so happy.... weren’t we?” Liz nodded, and then a memory came upon her. Future Max… the end of the World…Viva Las Vegas. “We were together in an alternate future as well.” Max turned his gaze to Liz in puzzlement. “What?” “Max… I wanna show you something. I don’t know why but… we need to connect.” Nodding, he turned taking Liz’s outstretched hands; while meeting her gaze.

Their connection was instant, electrifying. Max saw himself as he was now eight years ago. He saw and heard everything. Their future…their destruction.... He felt the pain he was causing Liz, as if each plan and failure were a knife to her heart. And then he saw that day with Kyle. He saw the preparation behind it, the agony it was causing Liz to watch him walk away. Moments later, he saw himself dancing to I Shall Believe, their wedding song. He watched as he spun Liz around before finally disappearing into thin air.

He felt her despair, her loneliness as he constantly grew closer to Tess. He watched the day they made love, remembering every feeling, every touch and caress. He felt her fear and wonder at being pregnant with his child. He watched her watch him walk away with Tess in his arms that day at lunch. He felt and saw everything he had destroyed inside of her until he just couldn’t take it anymore.

Max wasn’t the only who saw things. Liz also saw things: that day in the desert after having just heard Max’s destiny… the way he felt watching her walk away. She felt his agonizing desperation over the summer to finally see her again. She felt and saw the way he felt that day upon seeing her and Kyle in bed together. She felt everything: the way he felt during his proposal and marriage to Tess. The confusion, the depression, the anger. And finally she saw Tess’s mind warp of the day she left. She felt what ‘her’ words and coldness had did to him.

Suddenly the connection was broken and Liz was staring into Max’s tear filled eyes. “I’m…” “Max… Just don’t say anything.” “How could I not, Liz? I know why you wouldn’t want to be with me. I’ve hurt you so much and all I ever wanted to do was love you…” He whispered, watching her smile sadly as tears ran down her cheeks. “I’m still in-love with you, Liz.” “Max…” Suddenly, Liz cell went off. Sighing, she pulled free from Max’s encompassing hands. “Hold on…” Turning away from Max’s expectant gaze, Liz picked up.

“Yeah… Maria. What’s wrong? You’re water broke. Oh god…where’s Michael? Okay, calm down Maria. We’re on our way!” Turning around, Liz met Max’s worried gaze. “We have to go. Maria’s in labor…” He nodded before standing up. They all but ran back to Max’s Pickup. “Where’s Michael?” Max asked as he started the engine. “In Carlsbad picking up art supplies. The girls are with him” Looking anywhere but at Max, Liz stared out the window. They sat in an awkward silence all the way to Maria’s.

“Does Michael usually help out with the delivery?” “No…not really he just pisses Maria off.” Climbing out of the truck, they made their way on the porch “Oh ok… so who does help?” “Usually Isabel and Tess…” “Oh.” Unlocking the door with her powers, Liz called out for Maria. “Up here…” Liz followed the voice up the stairs into what she expected was Michael and Maria’s room. Turning around suddenly, Liz bumped into Max’s hard chest.

“Oh umm, maybe you should try to get in touch with Michael. Maybe he turned his cell back on…” “Ok…are you okay up here?” “Yeah, Max. I’ve given birth before, twice actually. So yes, I’m fine” Liz finished giving him a reassuring smile. “Ok just making sure. Maria tends to get a bit violent in labor…” “Max, go…” Nodding, he made his way downstairs. Turning back to Maria’s bedroom, Liz thought. ‘Oh god, I have no idea what I’m doing.’ “Liz…” Maria shouted furiously from the bedroom. “Coming…”

“Maria…let go of my hair.” Liz cried out in pain as Maria went through another contraction. Letting go, Maria fell back against the pillow in tears. “I’m so sorry, Liz! Oh god, where’s Michael?” “I don’t know… push Maria. You have to push.” Falling back against the pillows, she cried. “I need Michael, Chica. I can’t do this!” “Yes, you can, Maria!” Liz gasped, as pain shot through the hand Maria was holding. “No I can’t…ohmigod…This is all Michael’s fault… the insatiable of a son…”

Hit hard with another contraction, Maria screamed. Liz couldn’t take it anymore. “Max?” Thudding up the stairs, Max burst through the door. “Where’s Isabel?” “She’s on her way. Need any help?” He asked, watching as Maria strained. “Uh yeah that would be great. Climb in back of her, Max. That’s right. Now hold her hand.” Rubbing her hand, Liz crouched in front of Maria as another contraction came on. An hour later with Max, Isabel, and Liz’s help, Maria brought a keening dark-haired baby boy into the world.

While Isabel cleaned a sleeping Maria and Max called everyone about the news, Liz cleaned the baby. He was so cute. Alert eyes watched her as, she made her way to Maria’s side. Sitting on the side of the bed, Liz nudged Maria awake. Isabel had already left the room to whip up something to eat. “Hello mommy” Maria grinned in exhaustion at her best friend. “Thank you.” “You’re welcome. What’s his name?” She sighed taking her son into her arms.

“Just to spite, Michael, it’ll have to be Mikhail Samuel Guerin. Hmmm…do you like that, Mikhail? Yes you do but your daddy won’t. He wants his only boy to be named after him. Yes, he does but mommy isn’t going to be very obliging.” Glancing up at Liz, Maria grinned. “I’m an alien breeding ground…yes I am.” At that moment, Michael, Annabelle, and Alexa burst into the room. Getting up, Liz was on her out of the room when Michael grabbed her for a hug. “Thank you…” Liz nodded before closing the door, “Your welcome, daddy.”

Hours later, Max and Liz sat in an empty Crash Down. The kids were upstairs with Ava. Sighing, Liz sat back in exhaustion. “You did a good job.” Max commented watching Liz yearningly. They should’ve had that. They should have had a home full of kids. They should’ve been happily married. Michael and Maria should’ve been them but they weren’t. “Thanks. I don’t know what’s harder giving birth or helping someone give birth.” “How was yours?” Max asked, beyond curious.

“Easy compared to most. A lot of things could’ve gone wrong. It was my first pregnancy…giving birth to twins made it that much more complicated, not to mention I was alone. But then Ava came, without any questions or qualms.” Smiling, Liz met Max’s sober eyes. “What?” “Can you really trust her, Liz?” She sat back, shocked. “Could you have really trusted Tess? But you did…” “And you see how that went. How do you know that Ava isn’t just using you?”

“Oh god, Max. I can’t believe you would even think that. Ava’s like a sister to me. When you were with Tess, helping her through labor, Ava was helping me through labor. When I needed help getting off my feet financially, she was the one who helped. And even when I didn’t need help, she was still there. She was the one who watched Amelia and Alex during the day when I worked the night shift. She was the one who saved your life…”

“ Wait a minute…what?” “When you had left with Tess to New York, she was here. She was the one who told us about Rath and Lonnie, who helped me warn you. Yes, she was the one Max. So instead of feeling suspicious towards Ava, you should be feeling gratitude…” “Listen, I’m sorry… I-I didn’t know.” He sighed, rubbing a hand over his face. Standing up, Liz gave Max a sad smile. “It’s okay, Max. You want something from the kitchen?” “No.” “Ok…” “Liz…” “Yeah, Max.”

“We never actually finished talking…” Standing, Max stood toe to toe with Liz. Tilting her head up, he was caught by just how beautiful she was. “I need you, Liz. I still love you… Give me a chance to make things between us right again!” Liz stared up into his eyes and took a step back. “I wish I could, Max…but I can’t. We…this could never work. We’re not meant to be…” “But we are…we were. You saw it for your self…Zan and Latanya. You and me. We’re meant to be.” He whispered taking a step close to her.

“No we’re not, Max. Those were two different life times where we both ended dead. Maybe that says something. So much has happened… so many lives has been lost, Max that I just can’t see us back getting together.” “Liz…” “You chose Tess, Max. I can’t forget that. And just because she’s dead now… you want…what for us to live happily ever after?” Taking a step back, Liz looked away from Max’s devastated expression. “I can’t trust you, Max, not to hurt me. I love you. But we were never meant to be!” Max nodded in understanding and guilt.

“I’m sorry for hurting you. But I can’t except that…I made the mistake of doing that before. I’m just going to have to prove to you, Liz Parker that we are meant be, that you can trust me, and that I do love you. Because I do and that isn’t going to change.” Taking advantage of Liz’s stunned state, Max made his move. Their kiss was a tender touch of lips that spoke of Max’s determination. Giving Liz a determined grin, Max strode out of the Crash Down leaving behind a stunned, disoriented woman.

*Thanks for all of the feedback. I hope this answers most of your questions. Look forward to Chapter 1 soon

Chapter One:

A few days later, Liz sat on her bed listening to her neighbor’s voice rant off the following bills that were piling up in her absence. “Ok, thank you Cathy. Yes… I appreciate your concern... As of right now, I really don’t know. I have to talk that over with my family…Yes…Yes… Ok, thanks. Bye.” Hanging up, Liz sighed. Meeting Alex’s eyes from her old computer desk, she gave him a smile of reassurance that was returned in full measure. “Family meeting… go get your Aunt Ava and Amelia.” Family meetings were important in their family when things were about to go down as Ava put it. These family meetings were becoming something of a routine for them since Liz had received that call from Maria a month ago.

Nodding without question, Alex obeyed, running from the room. Slowly but surely she was getting her little boy back. He was no longer the silent and desolute boy she had come to know these past few weeks. Liz realized with relief that he was gradually becoming himself again…picking with Amelia, laughing, making sarcastic remarks. The only thing that still bothered Liz was his nightmares. They were becoming almost non-existent as the days passed on but they were still coming nevertheless. What was that saying? Time healed all wounds…well that could be said for both of her children.

Liz no longer had to worry about tripping over Amelia in the middle of the night or of having to sneak out the back door to keep her daughter from crying. Being with Max and Zan gave them hope. Something that Liz realized she never took into perspective. She had always thought that by her being there that she was enough. But she realized she was wrong, among other things. Liz guessed that she had always known deep down that despite everything that she wasn’t enough.

Take for instance Alex, she had always known deep down in her soul that her child craved for more. As much as Liz tried to smother him with love, he would always get this distant look, when alone, as if he was waiting for something or someone to happen… that someone being Max. She suddenly realized that Amelia was same way, only less shy in her approach. Amelia had always had questions about Max and had almost no qualms about stating them openly unlike Alex who almost seemed shy or hesitant about asking about Max. As if by mentioning his father, he would somehow hurt Liz.

A few moments later, Alex entered the room followed by Amelia and Ava. Patting the spot beside her for Amelia to sit, she watched as Alex and Ava made them selves comfortable in their respective places across the room. “Mom, what’s wrong?” Meeting the gaze of her little girl, Liz smiled comfortingly, stroking back a lock of Amelia’s dark hair back into her pony tail, before turning to meet the eyes of her son and best friend. “What do you guys think about staying in Roswell… indefinitely?” There was a complete silence for a few moments as everyone took in the question.

“As in moving? Here?” Amelia asked, looking up at her mother. “Yes…” “What about school…my room? What about all our friends?” Briefly meeting Ava’s gaze, Liz looked to her daughter. “You’ll make new ones here unless you want to stay in Clovis…” “No!” Alex interrupted, surprising everyone. “No?” “No, I wanna to stay here.” Giving Alex a bewildered smile, Liz turned to Amelia. “Ok… how about you Amelia?” A look was shared between Alex and Amelia before Amelia answered with a sigh. “I guess it would be okay. But can I at least say goodbye to Sam before I leave?” Sam was Amelia’s best friend since Kindergarten. They were like sisters.

“Sure, Ava? How about you? The house is just as much yours as it is ours. I was thinking of renting it out… but if you want to stay in Clovis…” “Liz…do you want me to stay… I mean here in Roswell?” Ava interrupted insecurely. “Of course, yes. But I don’t want you to feel as if your obligated, Ava. You’ve put your life on hold for us…for me!” Shaking her straight shoulder-length blonde head in denial, Ava’s green eyes filled with tears.

“Liz…my life started with you guys. I don’t have anywhere else to go…” Giving Ava a tear filled nod, Liz met everyone’s gaze. “Then it’s settled then. We leave the day after tomorrow. I have to go talk to your Grandmother. Family meeting is adjourned.” Climbing off the bed, she made her way to the door. Halting in the doorway, she turned around, meeting Ava’s gaze. “Ava?” “Yeah?” “Thank you…for staying!” Ava gave Liz a grin filled with so many unsaid words. “You’re welcome!” Nodding with a smile of her own, Liz left the room to find her mother.

Seconds later, she stood in the doorway to the kitchen watching as Nancy unpacked groceries, hugging herself. Liz didn’t know how to respond to the dilemma of her parents… not being her parents. Of her life being nothing but a lie. Quite frankly, she tried not to think about it at all. Turning around with orange juice in hand, Nancy jumped in surprise at her daughter’s presence. “Good morning.” Liz remained silent as her mother put away the orange juice. Her usually animated brown eyes were somber with anger as she watched Nancy’s every movement until finally everything was put away.

Turning around, her mother leaned wearily against the counter, looking older beyond her years. They hadn’t spoken in nearly three weeks despite the fact that were living in the same residence. Nancy watched her daughter in awe, fear, and sadness. She didn’t know how she could make things better. “We’re leaving the day after tomorrow…” “Liz?” “No, it’s not what you think. We’re leaving to pack the house up in Clovis and then we’re coming back…for good. I just wanted to thank you for your hospitality…”

Liz whispered somberly, before moving to leave the room. “Lizzie…” Stopping, Liz, without having turned around, waited. “Despite the fact that you’re angry and have every right to be just that, I just wanted to say that I’m sorry. I love you… and I love those kids! I just hope that you can forgive me…someday!” Nodding slowly, Liz left the kitchen without a word in reply. Swiftly wiping away her tears, she put a smile on for her kids before entering the living room

The next day, Liz parked Ava’s bright yellow beetle right in front of Maria’s house. Sighing in exhaustion, she climbed out of the car before slamming the door. They, Ava and Liz, had stayed up most of the night watching movies, talking, and looking through newspaper ads. The kids had fallen asleep almost immediately to Liz’s relief, seeing as though they were up before everyone else.

Knocking on the door, Liz waited. Maria would freak if she found out Liz had left Roswell again without saying so much as a goodbye. From the other side of the door, she heard muffled laughs and a baby crying. Suddenly the door was yanked opened to present a small brunette with a chocolate grin for a welcome. “Hi Aunt Liz…guess what? Uncle Max and Zan is here and mommy’s going crazy. ‘Hail keeps crying and daddy promised to paint me after Annabelle…” “Wow…can I come in please.” Liz laughed stepping through the screen door. “Yes…but first you have to marry Uncle Max…” Liz’s eyes widened in stunned amusement.

“Alexa, who’s at the door? Michael I specifically told you not to let them eat chocolate cake for breakfast…Oh hey, Chica.” A bedraggled Maria greeted, coming to the door, with a smile of relief. “Good morning… need help?” “Liz, you know me. Of course I need help. Alexa go wash off your face…And don’t run. Mikhail’s sleep.” Maria called firmly as Liz followed her into a disheveled living room to find Michael painting Annabelle in a corner, Zan watching cartoons, and Max reading a stack of papers. But everyone, except Michael, stopped at the sound of Liz entering.

“Hi Aunt Liz…” “Hey Annabelle…Max.” “Hey!” Max grinned, his hazel-brown eyes alight with tenderness and excitement, reminding her of when they were teenagers and still in-love. Liz closed her eyes remembering that time so well. Turning her gaze away from Max’s, she met Zan’s cold green eyes. “Hi Zan…” “Hi Ms. Parker…” He grumbled, before going back to watching Sponge Bob. “Zan sit back.” Maria ordered as she walked towards the kitchen. Liz briefly met Max’s heated gaze again before turning to follow Maria. “Coffee?” “Please?” She replied, sitting down in a nearby chair.

Pouring Liz a cup of coffee, Maria took it to her. Liz grinned in amusement, taking in Maria’s torn jeans and t-shirt, her dark hair tied up into a messy ponytail. “God Maria…motherhood does you so well.” “I know doesn’t it? Anyway… what brings you to my humble abode, Lizzie? Not that I’m not grateful by the way…but what’s up?” Liz suddenly grew sober then at Maria’s questions. “We’re going back to Clovis…” “What? How can that be? Lizzie, you can’t…” “Maria calm down… I’m just going back to pack up my stuff …get the kids transcripts to enroll them here…and quit my job. Then, I’m coming right back.” Liz stated, taking a sip of her coffee.

Maria sighed in relief. “Ok…it’s just… I can’t lose you again. I need my best friend” Liz smiled sadly,” I know and I need you, too” Taking a sip of her own, Maria watched her best friend with envy. She envied Liz of her strength…maturity…beauty. Despite everything that Liz had been through in the last nine years, she had still come out strong and that much wiser. With her dark hair hitting the tip of her shoulders bluntly and her brown eyes alight with warmth, Liz Parker was a woman no longer ruled by the fates of Destiny but instead the one ruling. “You mind telling me why you decided to move back to Roswell, other than me of course?” Liz shrugged her brown eyes sober even as she smiled. “Roswell’s home as much as I hate to admit it. Clovis was just a shelter... a vacation away from the chaos. I’ve been running all this time and now it’s time to stop!”

Holding Mikhail while Maria made lunch, Liz sat on the sofa and took in the little bundle of joy in her arms. The house was quiet as everyone had gone out into the yard to play in the warm evening air. Cooing to the baby, she smiled. He was so adorable. He reminded her of when Amelia and Alex were babies. Liz was suddenly hit hard with the realization that she wanted more children. She wanted a family…like Maria’s; even with everything that was going on. There was an ache in her chest that grew unbearable upon realizing that she would never have what Maria and Michael had!

Sighing, she stroked Mikhail’s soft cheek. In the kitchen, Maria fixed the plates with the girls’ favorites. She turned at the sound of Max’s entrance. “Is Liz still here?” Maria smiled in approval. “Yeah....” Nodding, he turned to leave. “Max…” “Yeah?” He asked expectantly from the doorway. “If you hurt her…No, Let me just put it this way: Don’t hurt her. Got it?” He nodded uneasily as a spatula was shoved into his chest, “Uh…. yeah, got it…” “Good…Michael?” Leaving the kitchen as quickly as possible, Max made his way into the living room to find Liz smiling tenderly down at Mikhail.

He came to halt, stomach muscles clenching, stunned at how right Liz looked holding the small infant in her arms. Max wished he had been there to witness her holding his son and daughter with the same care. A wave of tender possessiveness came over him, then, that he had never experienced with Tess as he was experiencing now watching Liz. Watching her, he was amazed again at how stunning she was inside and out. Wearing a pair of black slacks and a soft pink tank top with her dark, shoulder-length framing her face, Liz looked absolutely breath taking.

Glancing up, she met Max’s heated gaze. His eyes were intense hazel green speaking volumes. One word to describe how Max looked today would be dangerous. Liz had to suck in a breath at how good Max looked. Tall and imposing with jeans and a plain t-shirt, he stood taking up most of the doorway, his eyes glittering with tenderness. “Hey…” Liz greeted with a small smile as Max came to sit beside her. “Hi…” Trying unsuccessfully not to blush or lose her composure, she watched Mikhail before turning to meet Max’s expectant gaze.

There was an awkward silence in the moments that went by as they sat together. Sitting forward, Max leaned his elbows on his legs, letting his hands fall limply in between, as he gazed at Mikhail. “I wish so much that I could’ve been there… could’ve seen Alex and Amelia when they were…” Liz grinned, tenderly. “So do I! They were so alert and mature at such an early age. It almost overwhelmed me just how much. They hardly ever cried…as if sensing I needed the silence…” Max nodded, his eyes intent on Liz’s. “Who was born first? Alex?” “No, Amelia…fifteen minutes apart. God that was such a long time ago!” Liz giggled, shaking her head.

“What were their first words?” “Amelia’s was light and Alex’s was dada…” Max’s eyes came up in surprise. “Even though I wasn’t there… he said dada?” Liz nodded in tears, “Yup…it surprised me just as much. I was putting him to sleep…he was crying and all of sudden he started whispering dada…dada…dada. That should’ve been my first clue…that despite everything I couldn’t escape you!” Running a hand over his face, Max’s gaze went to Mikhail. Looking towards Max, Liz gave him a small smile. “Maybe, we’re connected to each other, Liz. Maybe after everything we’ve been through we belong to each other…”

“Maybe…maybe not… I don’t know. Maybe we shouldn’t be thinking about ‘us’ right now, Max. You have Zan to take care of, first and foremost… and I have Alex and Amelia to think of… Speaking of my kids, we’re leaving tomorrow…” Max’s eyes suddenly jerk to Liz, stunned, “What? Where?” Sitting up straight, Max’s face was filled with fear and pain. Liz stifled a giggled at this, “To Clovis…We’ve decided to move here indefinitely. We’re going back to pack, Max.” He suddenly looked into Liz’s twinkling brown eyes and let out a breath of relief. “Oh? You thought that was funny huh?”

She let out a laugh then, “Yeah that was pretty funny.” Max abruptly grew silent, then, before asking, “When will you be back?” “I don’t know…It depends on how long it takes for me to get everything packed up and to find a place to stay…” Max nodded in understanding, despite the fact that he was hesitant to let her leave for the fear that he would never see her or the kids again. Suddenly, Maria’s entrance interrupted his thoughts. Handing them a plate, Maria gave Max a wink that didn’t go by unnoticed by Liz, before taking the baby. Eating in companionable silence, Max and Liz ate lunch together while watching ‘The Rugrats’.

After lunch, Liz made her way into the kitchen to find Maria eating while looking through a clothes’ Magazine. Looking up at Liz’s entrance, Maria smiled knowingly. “Don’t say anything Maria. It was just lunch.” “Okay…I didn’t say anything. It was just lunch…although you and Max seemed a little cozy in there.” “We so did not, Maria!” Liz blushed, avoiding Maria’s smile. “Okay, whatever you say.” “Thank you.” “For what?” “For lunch and for being you…” Maria grinned then, “Your welcome but don’t even try to change the subject.”

“Maria, god would you let it go. It was lunch. That’s it. I have to go. Ava’s probably going crazy wondering where I am.”
Nodding, Maria sighed at Liz before letting it go. “Okay. Promise to call me, please.” Liz smiled, leaning down to give Maria a hug. “I promise.” Saying goodbye to everyone including a somber Zan, Liz made her way through the house to find Max waiting for her by the door. Giving him a questioning smile, Liz stepped out onto the porch. Reaching Ava’s car in companionable silence, Liz opened the door but was stopped by Max’s gentle touch.

Turning to Max, Liz was drawn into his arms where she met his soft lips for a brief gentle kiss that held so much promise for the future. “This-this is a mistake…This can’t happen, Max… at least not right now. I need time!” She whispered, drowning in his eyes. “I know and that’s why we’re friends.” “Friends? Friends…that’s right we’re just friends.” Liz breathed, stepping out of his arms. Max just smiled as he helped Liz into the car.

Leaning into it, he grew sober as he buckled Liz’s seat belt. “I’ve made a lot of mistakes, Liz, when it’s comes to us. But loving you…wanting to be with you isn’t one of them.” Liz remained silent and still for a few moments, looking ahead, before starting the engine. “Bye, Max.” She looked up into his eyes once again, watching as he stepped back. “Be safe Liz. Okay?” Liz gave him a nod and small smile in answer before pulling off.

The Next Part:

A Month Later:

Jerking back and forth in his sleep, Zan dreamt of the day his mom was buried. Consciously, he knew this was the same dream that had haunted him for the past month but sub-consciously it felt so real as if it were really happening. The sun warming his face, Zan stood at his mother’s gravesite. Everyone was there: his dad, Aunt Isabel, Uncle Michael, Mr. Valenti. He held tightly onto his dad’s hand as he watched the soil bury his mother’s coffin.

Feeling his gaze being drawn into the distance, Zan saw his mother beckoning him. Turning to look up at his father, he found him gone. Suddenly, everyone was gone and he stood alone... so alone. On the wind, he heard his mother’s voice calling to him. Obeying, Zan took a step towards her. Each step he took put a mile of distance between him and his mom. Frustrated, Zan started walking faster. Sub-consciously, Zan didn’t realize that he was yet again sleepwalking.

Max caught Zan before he could take the first step off the landing onto the staircase. His heart beating rapidly with relief, he restrained his son’s attempts to escape. In his dream, Zan fought the forces that held him back but they were too strong. He started sobbing then in frustration, watching as his mother disappeared. “Zan- Zan, wake up!” Max chanted in worry as he tried to shake Zan awake. Sobbing, Zan blinked his eyes open. Disoriented, his gaze wildly searched his surroundings to find his dad on his knees in front of him.

His eyes meeting that of his father’s tormented gaze, Zan started to cry. “Dad?” Pulling his son into a tight a hug, Max in his self contempt tried to reassure Zan that everything would be alright. But he wasn’t exactly sure that they would, so he kept quite. They sat on the cold hard floor for what seemed like an eternity as Zan cried. Pulling back, he looked up to his dad, solemnly. “When will it stop…hurting?” “I don’t know…Was it the same dream?” Max asked gruffly, as he stood to carry Zan back into his bedroom. Zan nodded in answer. Lying Zan down in his bed, Max slowly pulled up the covers as he tried to stay calm. “Dad, can- can you stay in here with me until I fall asleep?” Max nodded with a small smile, making himself comfortable in the chair beside the bed “As long as you want. Try to go to sleep”

The next day, Zan found his father sleeping in the very same chair from the night before. Watching his father’s large chest rise and fall, he thought about his mother. He knew his father was lying…about his mother’s death. And it wasn’t just his dad either…it was everyone. He knew the truth. He knew who was responsible for his mom’s murder. The hurt and anger that Zan had felt since that day, two months ago, had turned into a full blown rage. Everyone, he thought, who had lied to him was just as guilty in his eyes of his mother’s death as the man responsible. They all played a part…but the one he held most responsible was no other than the man he had heard several times on the phone…Kivar.

Zan had, even, on occasion found the man in his very home. His mom had told him that the visitor was an old friend of mommy’s and that dad couldn’t be told or he would become very sad. Zan had believed her and had kept his mouth shut until this very day. His mom wasn’t the reason Zan now kept the knowledge of her secrets to himself. Dad was better off not knowing…it would only make him hate his mom more. So, Zan kept quiet…until the day someone finally decided to tell ‘him’ the truth. Unless they didn’t know the truth themselves… and then maybe that was even more of a reason for Zan to keep quiet.

A few days earlier, Liz sat unpacking the rest of the boxes marked kitchen. It had taken them longer than expected to move. She had planned to be gone no longer than two or three weeks at the least. But things didn’t go as planned. They never do, Liz thought smiling. It had taken at least a week to pack up and clean the house. Another week had been spent arranging for the little odds and ends in the house to be fixed, while writing up a lease. Then another week went by where they spent time putting up an ad in Clovis’s local newspaper, packing up her classroom, looking through affordable ads in Roswell’s local newspaper (which was quiet difficult seeing as though there weren’t many houses for rent with four bedrooms in a town as small as Roswell), and then finally finding a place to rent to everyone’s satisfaction.

The latter being the most difficult. Liz and Ava had finally, by the end of the month, found a house that could rival with theirs and probably win. Their chosen home was seated in the upscale district of Roswell, which meant it didn’t come cheap. The rent originally being at an expansive nine-hundred was lowered to a pleasant seven-hundred. Thankfully to a little negotiating and a nice landlord, the rent was brought into Liz and Ava’s means of income. Having four-bedrooms and two baths, the ranch style home was spacious with a two car garage and patio. Upon touring the house, Liz had called Ava from Roswell and gave her all the specifics. As soon as they could, which was the following week, they started the moving process. Moving furniture back and forth from Clovis to Roswell, it took at least two days with help from Kyle, Jesse, Mr. Valenti, and surprisingly…Michael.

She hadn’t seen or really spoken to Max since that day, a month ago, when he had kissed her. He had called every night since then, though, to say goodnight to the kids…asking them how their day went. After having said goodnight to them, though, he would then ask her how her day went and when she and the kids would arrive back in Roswell. Listening to her short replies, Max would take his cue. But before hanging up he would tell Liz, gruffly, that he loved her and when she got back he would prove just how much. Liz was afraid. She was terrified, actually, that she was falling for Max all over again. For the last eight years, she had loved Max and survived. But being in-love with him was something else all together different. She had leapt headfirst into it at sixteen and had fallen, barely surviving… Now at the age of twenty-six, she was afraid of taking that leapt again…fearing that this time she just might not make it. Sighing with defeat, she finished up with the kitchen. Walking past the small dining room and spacious living room, Liz came to Alex’s room, the first door on the left.

Stepping into a now organized spider-man central, she stood impressed. Alex looked up upon his mom’s entrance. Seeing everything as she saw it, he smiled as well. “Wow…not a sock in sight! Tell me…is it going to stay like this?” Liz asked, teasingly, plopping down beside her son. Alex grinned, titling his head to the side to think about it. At that moment, she had to inhale a breath at just how much Alex resembled Max. It was almost uncanny. “Uh, I don’t think so!” Liz let out a short laugh before impulsively kissing Alex on the cheek. “I agree.” “Mom! Yuck… cooties.” He screeched, trying to rub away her kiss while giving her a glare.

“Ok- Ok. I’m going. You know…school starts next week. Are you excited?” Shrugging, he answered, “A little.” “Good…I was thinking about enrolling you here for swimming lessons…since you didn’t finish back in Clovis. Would you like that?” Alex’s face suddenly lit up then. “Yes!” Liz nodded. “Okay…one more thing though. You sort of hurt my feelings when you rubbed away my kiss…so now you have to come give me a hug and a kiss…just to make up for it. What do you say?” Alex hid smile behind a frown. “Okay if you say so. But only this one time. I have a manly image to hold up and I can’t ruin it by being caught kissing a girl.” He finished giving his mom a smack on the cheek. “Even your mom?” Liz asked frowning, teasingly, down at her son. “Even my mom…” Alex answered gravely but giving a loud girly screech as his mom showered his face with kisses. “Mom…”

Grinning, Liz left a highly annoyed Alex sulking in his room. Knocking on the next door, she turned the knob to find… a mess. Nancy Drew and Babysitter Club books were stacked in several piles on the floor, clothes were thrown everywhere including Barbie’s, every drawer to her daughter’s dresser was open, and her daughter at that very moment was on the cordless. “Amelia? Amelia!” Amelia looked up then and gave her mother a tight smile. “Hold on, mom. Samantha’s having a tragedy. Her mom just grounded her from Sailor Moon…I know… I know. I’m so sorry.” Amelia crooned, as she fingered her dark hair.

Taking deep shallow breaths, Liz tried to stay calm. But the more she examined the room, the closer she came to losing control. This room should’ve been spotless, seeing as though her daughter had more or less all day to do it. Liz remembered coming in several times today to check up on her daughter’s room to find that exactly nothing had been done. “Amelia say goodbye to Sam…. this very minute or you’ll be grounded as well!” Liz gritted out. “Oh ok mom…just hold on.” Amelia waved, not having heard a single word her mother had just said.

Losing her composure, Liz snatched the phone away from daughter before hanging up on Sam all together. “Mom! How could you do that? I was talking to Sam” Amelia screeched, as tears filled her eyes. “I know… and I was talking to you.” Walking to the doorway, Liz stopped before turning around. “I don’t know what you’ve been doing all this time Amelia Selene? But the next time I take a step into this room, it had- it had just better be clean or you can forget about Sailor Moon and TV all together for a month!” Watching as her mom left the room, Amelia guiltily wiped her tears away. Her mom almost never got mad…at least not that mad to use her first and middle name. Standing up, Amelia started the process of cleaning her room.

In the process of making dinner that night, Liz heard the doorbell ring. “I’ll get it…” She called, wiping her hands on her apron. Of course, she was the only one who could get it, seeing as though Ava had started her new job today at the Tumbleweed Inn. Opening the door, Liz found herself staring into the hazel-brown eyes of Max Evans. A tired smile adorned his good looks. It had been a month since she had seen him and she found her heart beating rapidly at the sight of him standing on her doorstep. Wearing a suit with his long hear tousled from running his fingers through it and a 5 o’clock shadow, Max looked rough around the edges but handsome all the same “Hey.” “Hi.” Liz breathed nervously. “Can I come in?” “Uh sure…” Liz laughed softly, stepping back to let him in. His presence overwhelmed her with intense feelings, so much so in fact that Liz felt as if she were falling apart all over again.

Looking around, Max sniffed the air in alarm as he smelled an aroma. “Liz, are you cooking something?” Staring at Max in bewilderment, Liz sniffed at the air as well and let out a cry of alarm as she realized something was burning. Running into the kitchen and over to the stove, she found that she had burn the sauce to her Grandma Claudia’s recipe, which she had been trying so hard not to do. Picking up the pot without thought, Liz yelped in pain just as Max cried out her name. She felt the intense heat burn her hand before she dropped the pot into the sink.

At the sound of Liz’s cry and the pot dropping, Alex and Amelia came running into the kitchen. “Mom? Are you okay?” Amelia asked in worry before giving her father an inquiry glance. Alex stood behind sister watching Max suspiciously. “Yeah, mom what happened. What did you do?” Alex asked turning his burning gaze towards his father…who was by the way just a little too close to his mom. Letting out a frustrated sigh, Liz rubbed at her hand to relieve some of the burning. “Alex that’s enough. Max didn’t do anything. So, I think you owe him an apology.” Looking down at his sneakers, Alex mumbled an apology…embarrassment tinting his cheeks.

“It’s okay, Liz.” Max said giving Alex a sad smile. “No it’s not okay Max.” She replied, giving Alex a stern look that spoke words of disapproval. She gave a sigh as she watched Alex fight back tears. “I’m fine guys. See?” She asked holding up her hand for the kids’ inspection so as for them not to worry any further. “It’s really red. Does it hurt?” Amelia asked inquiringly “It’s just a little sore but I’m fine.” She smiled reassuringly. “Are you sure?” Alex asked, meeting his mother’s gaze with concern. “Yes, now go play. I think we’re having pizza tonight.” “Okay…c’mon Alex.” Alex gave his sister a nod before giving his mother and father one last look.

“Let me see, Liz.” Max asked, gently from behind her. Turning around, Liz met Max’s eyes with tears. Emotions were overwhelming her as she stood alone in the kitchen with him. It was excruciating to have him so close to her but yet so far out of her reach. It had always been. She wanted him with every part of her soul but she knew it wasn’t meant to be. Too much had happened for them to ever go back to what they once were. Logic was her life saver but most avowed enemy. Trying to blank them back, she stared up at Max in pain. Gently taking her hand, Max looked down at it in examination. “I’ll heal it.” Shaking her head, Liz tried to pull her hand free from his grasp. “Let go, Max.” He looked down at her with a reassuring smile. “I can heal it, Liz.”

“No Max, you can’t- you can’t just heal it with the touch of your hand and every thing will be okay. It doesn’t work like that anymore!” There was a hidden meaning behind her words that they both comprehended. They both stood for what seemed like an eternity staring into each other’s eyes. “If you really loved me so much, Max, why did you choose her?” Liz whispered in agony. Max’s throat worked as he took in her question. Emotions and memories gathered inside of him that threatened to explode.

“I thought it was the right thing to do. I thought I had lost you and with everything that was going wrong… If I had known…if I had just realized… that you were pregnant!” “But you didn’t realize. You didn’t even ask, Max. Not that that would’ve made a difference. What would you have done Max if you had known I was pregnant? I would like to think that you wouldn’t have married Tess…but I just don’t know anymore. I want so badly to believe that you loved me then…that you still love me now but my mind is telling me something else all together.”

“I did love you then and I do love you now. I thought that you had left me…like you’ve done so many other times. I was losing my sister and I thought I had lost you. I felt responsible for Tess... I thought it was the right thing to do... Zan’s my son, Liz…. You’re wrong if you think that things wouldn’t have been different if I had known about Alex and Amelia. Because things would’ve been different. I’ve made a lot of mistakes Liz. I know that and I take full responsibility for all my actions but you were the reason for a lot of them.”

“I know-I know…I pushed you away but I never would’ve thought in my wildest dreams that you would give up on me. I believed you that day when you said you were coming for me. I was counting on it…but then you came, well the future you anyway, and told me that our loved caused the end of the world. I was so scared and confused…and hurt. You were asking me to do the impossible…at least I thought the impossible…until you disappeared. You never looked at me the same after that day and that says something Max. As many lies as I told you I can’t to this day comprehend how you could think that I would just blithely give my virginity away. God…I offered you my friendship and you turned it away to go to New York with Tess.” Taking a deep breath, Liz turned away from him with a clenched jaw.

Max looked at Liz’s back feeling a sense of shame and anguish so strong that bile rose up his throat. Tears filled his eyes as he continued to listen to Liz’s grief stricken voice. “You’ve told me you loved me so many times, Max, and yet each time I’ve made a mistake or decision regarding our relationship I would always find you in Tess’s arms. God…that just about killed me…” “Liz…” Max stepped forward to touch her…to do anything to make up for his actions. “We were young, Max, I realize that. I’ve made mistakes as well but I have this fear that despite the nine years that have passed things have not changed. I have this fear that as soon as I do something wrong…something that will disappoint you….that you’ll leave me…. for good. I can’t take that chance now especially with Alex and Amelia. I’d be a walking basket case.” She snorted, finally turning around to meet Max gaze. His eyes were filled with self-loathing.

“I never meant to hurt you….to cause you to fear what we had…what we could have! I was confused… angry… hurt…but I never meant for you to doubt my love for you because I have always loved you Liz Parker. I know I haven’t shown it. Before the shooting, I dreamed of you… of loving you …of us being together…of me doing everything in my power to make sure I never caused you pain. And you don’t how much it hurts me to know that I’ve caused you that much and more. I wanna make you happy, Liz. If I can just prove to you how much I love you….” Max sobbed, as he leaned his forehead against hers…their eyes meeting. “Please give me a chance, Liz? We can take it slow…We…” “Shhh!” Liz whispered putting a finger to his lips. “I need time, Max. Just give me time and we’ll see.” Nodding, Max brushed a kiss against her finger before stepping back.

“I have to go pick up, Zan. Maria sent over this and I bought this... a house warming gift.” Max stated handing her two gift wrapped presents with bows. “Oh, Max. You didn’t have to do this.” She whispered taking the gifts from his outstretched hand. Their hands touched and their eyes met with caresses. Taking a step back, Liz gave Max a sad smile. “I’ll just go say bye to Alex and Amelia… and then I’m gonna go.” “Okay.” Max nodded before giving her kiss on the forehead. “Goodnight Liz.” “Goodnight Max.” Later on that night as the kids were getting ready for bed, Liz sat in her bedroom with Max’s gift lying in her palms. It was the necklace…with the alien symbol encrusted into it. It reminded her of so long go as teenager standing in his room…leaning into one another just as they were doing hours before.

This gift warmed her heart like no other. Liz didn’t think Max had any idea what kind of significance this necklace really held for them…for her or maybe he did. Liz had never thought of Antar as her home until today…until this very moment. Looking down at the symbol, Liz felt a since of peace…of belonging that she hadn’t felt in a very long time. She thought about Max then…about his words… about his eyes. He loved her, she realized. If she ever had any other doubt all she had to do was look into his eyes but she realized that that didn’t make things any easier but harder.

The Next Part:

After having put the kids to bed, Liz sat once again fingering the necklace. The house was silent giving her time to think. Since its arrival, she hadn’t been able to resist taking her eyes off of the gift. It was a trial just to do the chores that needed to be done or put the kids to bed without sneaking a peek. Ava had complained that she had been somewhere else all night and Liz had denied it saying that she was fine. But she wasn’t… fine. She couldn’t stop thinking about Max.

He made her feel so loved inside… as if she were truly his dream girl and then reality came…and she began doubt if he really loved her at all. Going over the conversation in her mind again from earlier, she remembered the self-hatred in Max’s eyes and for a moment felt guilt but then she remembered all of the times he had hurt her. Intentional or otherwise, Liz couldn’t forget what it felt like to have Max turn away from her again and again. Suddenly the night of the prom popped into her memories.

Liz remembered what came of that night… of how she had watched the love of her life kiss another woman. She remembered many nights before and afterward of Max with Tess…she had even witnessed their wedding day. How was she supposed to forget all of that? Tears clouded her eyes as she remembered Max’s hopeful smile earlier today. What was he trying to accomplish by making her remember?

Was it because Tess was dead and she was now available? Or was it because he truly loved her and was sorry for all the pain he had caused her? She honestly didn’t know. But she did know one thing: Max still had the power to hurt her… maybe more now than ever. He was giving her hope that maybe they were meant to be. That maybe she could trust him… not to hurt her again. That maybe they could be something other than friends

Climbing out of bed, Liz traveled to Ava’s room, entering without knocking. The room was dark all except for the alarm clock that read two in the morning. She hadn’t told Ava about Max’s visit or gift. She wanted to keep the knowledge to herself if only for a little while. Quietly making her way into her friend’s room, Liz stooped down in front of Ava’s unconscious body. Snoring softly, she lay tangled in her sheets. Reaching out to shake her awake, Liz stopped midway berating herself for being so selfish.

Ava had worked a ten hour shift before coming home to go grocery shopping. She had looked exhausted upon entering the house and now Liz was going to wake her up with the problems of her love life. But she needed help…someone else’s opinion of what she should do. Sighing with defeat, Liz dropped her hand back to her side. This was a matter she had to figure out on her own. Quietly leaving the room, she made her way back to bed to toss and turn the night away.

******

Two weeks later, Liz stood making breakfast as Amelia and Alex readied themselves for the first day of school. Alex was the first to be ready as always. Wearing his new black jeans with a navy short-sleeved t-shirt that said Nike, he dragged his back pack into the kitchen. “Good morning.” Liz greeted with a smile as she poured orange juice into a glass. Wearing a navy pinstripe suit, she was all ready to get back to work. “Morning…” Alex grumbled, sitting down at his place at the table. “Is Amelia ready?” “No, she’s still in the bathroom.” Alex complained, watching his mother at the stove.

“Well we have time. So are you excited?” Shrugging his shoulders, Alex replied, “A little.” Looking over to her son, she found him watching her with a small smile. “A little? A new school…new people and you’re only excited a little?” Liz teased, serving him a plate full of egg, pancakes, and fruit. At that moment, Amelia chose to make her entrance.

Wearing a red tie-dye top with laced up jeans and black dress boots, Amelia pranced in front of her mother. “How do I look?” Liz grinned, her gaze taking in Amelia’s appearance from head to toe. “I think you look as gorgeous as ever, Princess. Now go have a seat.” Liz replied, looking down into her daughter’s hazel-brown eyes, before giving her a kiss on the forehead.

After eating breakfast with the kids, Liz proceeded to Ava’s room to make certain she was up. An alarm clock simply was not Ava’s best friend. Seeing her friend still in bed, Liz quietly took off her heels. Heels off, she stood up on the bed before jumping up and down over Ava’s still form. “Morning sunshine…Get up!” Liz shouted laughing. Groaning, Ava called Liz few choice words which had Liz jumping even harder.

“Liz, you b---. I’m up…I’m up” Ava cried finally, sitting up with her shoulder-length blonde hair in tangles. “Good morning, sunshine. Wish me good luck today.” Liz grinned, hopping off the bed. Ava glared at her in silence before falling back into bed. “Fine be that way” Liz replied, sticking out her tongue, while leaving the room before stopping mid-stride to hear Ava yell out, “Good luck, Cornball!”

A half an hour later, Liz parked in an empty parking spot outside of Roswell Elementary. The last time she had entered Roswell Elementary had been three weeks ago to meet the staff and to organize her new classroom. A month before she had left, she had met with Principle Laura Foster, her old second grade teacher. It had been a nice reunion, seeing one of her favorite teachers. By the end of the meeting she had had Amelia and Alex enrolled in the third grade and a position as a science teacher, teaching third and fourth graders.

Now as she turned off the engine, she watched as kids ran around the schoolyard…meeting old friends and excited about the New Year. Turning to look back at her kids, she smiled a little. “You guys ready to start the day?” Her question was met with a somber silence as both Amelia and Alex looked nervously out the window and into the school yard. Alex was the first one to speak. “Uh- yeah, I guess.”

Liz let out a sigh of concern as she watched Amelia’s frightened gaze. Her kids didn’t adjust well to change…especially Amelia. “You guys…” Liz said getting the twins’ attention. ”Hey, everything will be okay. You’ll see by the end of the day you’ll have new friends…and everything will be fine. I’ll be here if you need me. And you’ll even have science class with me. Okay?” Nodding in answer, Alex and Amelia gave Liz a small smile.

Stepping out of the car and into the cool morning air, Liz closed and locked the car doors before following behind Amelia and Alex. Making their way into the school yard, Amelia was the first one to see Maria and Max. She exclaimed pointing to them. Liz smiled a little, nervous to come into contact with Max again for the second time in two weeks.

The first weekend, Liz had made herself scarce while Ava saw the kids out…of course she had watched them from her bedroom window but she hadn’t been ready to see Max again. Then last week, he had had to cancel because of a business trip…promising the kids that he would call them and they would meet his parents when he came back. Of course, Liz had also talked to Max briefly, but that was it.

Making their way over to Maria and Max, Liz took in all the small forms running around. “Hey chica” Maria greeted before giving Liz a hug. It had been at least a couple of weeks since she had seen Maria. They had talked back and forth a couple of times during then but Maria had been too busy with Mikhail and the girls while Liz had been too busy with moving. “Hey” Liz grinned, returning the hug.

Over Maria’s shoulder she met Max’s gaze and told herself to stay strong. “Hey Max.” “Hey” he answered gruffly, while blowing into his coffee. He wore another suit only this time with out the jacket. A lock of dark hair fell across his forehead then and Liz had to resist the urge to move it back into place. He looked so rugged even in a suit. His gaze remained steady on hers as she pulled away from Maria.

“Hi dad.” Amelia greeted, as she noticed the looks between her mother and father. “Good morning Princess…Good morning Alex, ready for this weekend?” He asked ruffling Alex’s hair with a smile. “Yeah…” Alex replied with a small smile. Liz felt pleasure fulfill her as she watched Max with the kids. Suddenly she wondered about Zan? “Max where’s Zan?” Without answering Max pointed to a dark haired boy playing ball with a group of boys. “He’s coming back… slowly. He still has nightmares though.” Max answered with a grimace Liz just nodded while watching Zan before looking back to her kids.

Alex was frowning and Amelia was biting her lip in guilt. Even in death, Tess still had the power to cause pain. Meeting Maria’s amused green eyes; Liz gave her a tight smile before stooping in front of the baby stroller beside Maria. Looking beyond several baby blankets, she found a sleeping two month old. Pulling the covers back over the sleeping infant, Liz glanced to her watch to find that she had fifteen minutes to the bell rang. “Okay…I have to go up…” Standing up, she straightened her suit.

“Aww mom, don’t leave us!” Amelia pleaded, wrapping her arms around her mother waist. “Oh sweetie, I have to. It’ll be ok. All right?” Liz whispered, stroking a hand through her daughter’s shoulder-length hair. “Okay.” Amelia mumbled sadly. “Kiss?” Liz asked, stooping down so her daughter could reach her cheek. Alex stood back watching. “Alex? You gonna be ok?” “Yeah…” He replied shoving his hands into his jeans. “They’ll be fine Liz…go” Maria commanded with a smile of amusement. Shaking her head, she met Max’s gaze one last time before turning to walk away.

******

Roswell Elementary had four floors. Going from kindergarten to fifth, there were three classes to each grade, not including music, art, and science. Liz’s classroom was on the third floor, next to art. Running up the three flights of stairs, she quickly walked to the end of the hall. Finally coming to her classroom, she unlocked the door. She had ten minutes until the bell rang and then she had to meet her first class back down in room 305.

Ten minutes later with everything set, Liz traveled down to the second floor. Giving Isabel a wave and receiving one in return, she knocked on the door marked 305. For a moment she watched in amusement as Isabel took control of her class before someone called out for Liz to enter. This being the first day of school, Ms. Emily Sands had the first fifteen minutes with her homeroom before Liz introduced herself.

Stepping into a room filled with about thirty students after the bell rang, she found the class seated quietly as they listened to Ms. Sands instructions. Standing to the side, she spotted Alex at the back slumped in his seat in the mist of rolling his eyes in boredom. After giving Alex a warning look, Liz stood with smiling reassuring smile at the curious stares of her pupils.

“I would very much like to introduce your new science teacher Ms. Parker.” Smiling, Liz walked to the front of the class. “Thanks Ms. Sands. Good morning guys... and girls. I would like for everyone to line up in two lines at the door, one for the boys and one for the girls.” She requested with a confidence, patience, and poise that she had perfected over the short time that she had been a teacher.

Ten minutes later, Liz stood in her classroom filled with students. “First on the agenda today, we’ll do attendance. Once I call your name raise your hand and say here.” Picking up her attendance book, she started to rant off names. “Lisa Andrews, Christina Daniels, Cherelyn Deluca?” A small hand rose up in the middle of a classroom full of students as Liz’s head jerked up. “Here.” “Hi Ms. Deluca, welcome to the third grade. Are you related to Maria Deluca?”

“Yes…she’s my cousin. My dad’s name is Sean Deluca and my mommy’s name is Serena Deluca.” Trying to hide her discomfort at the names of her parents, Liz smiled at the small curly headed blonde. “Thank you, Cherelyn.” Filled with unease and curiosity, she tried to get herself under control.” Now back to attendance.” After having gone over the attendance, Liz had succeeded at putting her suspiciousness behind her and had then proceeded to start the day. “Once again I’m Ms. Parker and I’ll be your science teacher for the following year. Welcome to the third grade…”

Hi guys, I just wanted to add another part onto Chapter 1 before I start Chapter 2. Thank you for all the feedback  Stay tuned for Chapter 2 next Saturday

Chapter 2:

That evening after school, Liz sat in her living room dialing Maria’s number. Waiting patiently, she listened to the chatter of Amelia and Alex playing on the porch. Suddenly, the phone stopped ringing to the sound of Maria shouting. “Alexa get down before you before you break your neck. Hello.” Liz’s mouth quirked in amusement at Maria’s labored breathing. “Hi. You sound busy... I’ll call you back later.” “Oh no you will not… I was going to call you anyway. How was your first day at school? And why did you run away? I thought you and Casanova were friends…with benefits.”

She rolled her eyes towards the ceiling, before deciding fall into Maria’s trap. “What? Who said we have benefits? I never told you we had benefits.” “Of course you had benefits Liz. You and Max kissed… a few times actually. I know you and I know him….and I know you two together.” Maria laughed, feeding Mikhail. Sighing, Liz fingered the necklace around her neck. “You know I never said thank you for the painting you sent over.” “You’re welcome, Chica. Do you like it? Michael made it…well I had to threaten bodily harm if he didn’t.”

Liz smiled into the phone. “I love it…thank you. Listen Maria the reason I called was to ask you about Sean.” “Ah my delinquent cousin slash devoted husband and father.” Maria muttered fondly. “Yeah, I met Cherelyn today… Why didn’t you tell me he was in town?” “I didn’t think you cared… so much has been happening that it didn’t cross my mind.” “You didn’t think I cared?” Liz asked with obvious pain evident in her voice. “I didn’t mean it that way Lizzie. Of course you cared… you’ve been going through a lot…and again it just didn’t cross my mind. Sean has been in town for about eight years now. He had left right after you did. A year later, he had come back with a wife and a child.”

She stared blankly into space registering Maria’s words. “Wow…so her name is Serena?” “Yeah?” Maria replied, suddenly filled with dread at Liz’s tone “Maria, you remember back in high school…when I pretended to sleep with Kyle?” “Of course, it was the whole future Max thing.” “Well what I didn’t mention was that Future Max mentioned Serena….” “What? Let me get this straight future Max mentioned and you didn’t tell me?” “It was irrelevant to the crisis at the time.” Liz replied in defense, as she stood up to go check on Alex and Amelia. “Okay…so what did he say?” “That in the future Serena and I were best friends.” There was a deafening silence before Maria mumbled an ‘oh’.

Biting her bottom lip in agitation, Liz watched Amelia sitting on the porch listening to her walkman while Alex dribbled his basketball in the driveway. “So how is she?” “Who Serena or Cherlyn?” “Maria focus….Serena.” “She’s nice…really quiet though…and shy. When I first met her…she gave me the creeps… as if she were seeing straight into my soul. She’s beautiful…as in long blond hair, big sad blue eyes, and a body to kill for. When you meet her you’ll know what I mean.”

“When they first moved in…of course me being me I raised hell…I couldn’t stand to be in the same room with her. But Cherelyn was a different story. She was just as adorable then as she is now. After a while, though, I got up the nerve to actually talk to her. She was really nice… but damn frustrating when it came to answering questions. Sean was the same way. And the surprising thing was that mom accepted their explanation as to why they were married in the first place. I just couldn’t get it. It was frustrating and confusing and I literally pulled out my hair. Do you think it’s her?”

Liz sighed, “It would be a pretty big coincidence if it wasn’t.” “Are you going to tell Max?” “I don’t know.” She answered watching as a dark blue jeep pulled up into the driveway. Kyle opened the driver’s side door just as Liz stepped out onto the porch. “I think you should Liz…I can’t take another Tess epidemic.” She gave a short laugh in response. “Listen Maria, I gotta go. I’ll talk to you later.”

“Alright but don’t think you’re off the hook Chica…I want details about what’s going on between you and Max.” “Goodbye Maria.” Liz said rolling her eyes while letting out a short laugh. “Alright, I’m going-I’m going.” Pushing the off button on the cordless, she looked up as Kyle stepped onto the porch. “Let me guess… Maria?” Liz gave him teasing smile. “Impressive…what’s up?”

“I’m here to pick up Ava…she didn’t tell you?” Liz just stood flabbergasted. “No…she didn’t. She’s not here Kyle.” Stiffening, Kyle frowned. “What?” “She doesn’t get off till 5…what time were you supposed to pick her up?” He stood for a few moments in thought…confusion written in his eyes before recognition came through. “At 6…” Kyle replied blushing in embarrassment. Liz gave him full blown smile then. “You really like her don’t you?” Shrugging his shoulders with a small smile, he said. “Yeah, I guess I do.”

“You wanna wait for her?” “No that’s okay…I’ll just bum around for another hour…You didn’t hear me just say that.” She laughed, “Yes I did.” Kyle looked ready to pop a vein. “Liz, please don’t say anything. Don’t tell Ava I was an hour early.” “Okay, I won’t.” “Liz.” He stated in warning. “Okay, I promise. She will never hear it from me.” She replied, her eyes sparkling with mirth. Kyle nodded with a fond smile of his own before he wiped Liz’s smile away. “With a smile like that no wonder Evans is in love with you. I’ll see you later Liz.” Watching Kyle’s tall form walk back to his jeep, Liz looked to Alex and Amelia, who was staring at her intently. Giving them a small smile, Liz went back inside to wait for Ava.

*********

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Liz asked ten minutes later, while plopping down on Ava’s bed. “I don’t know...I guess I was a little scared ya know?” She shook her head as she met Ava’s green eyes. “No I don’t know. Why would you think you had to keep this from me?” Giving a little shrug, Ava whispered, “Kyle’s your ex-boyfriend…I thought you would be hurt if you found out that we were going out. I was going to tell you sooner or later…but I wanted to wait a little while to see where this was going.” Liz shook her head before giving Ava a little friendly bump with her shoulders.

“First of all, Kyle and I have been over for a long time now…practically a decade. I love him but as a friend…nothing more. And I love you…so despite everything that happened with me and Kyle. I want you to be happy and if being happy means being Kyle…then go for it. He’s a good guy…one of the best actually. I wouldn’t ask for anything more then to see the two of my best friends, who I love so much, get together.” Ava nodded with a small smile before giving Liz a brief hug. “Thank you.” “You’re welcome. Now I think you’d better start getting dressed. I have a feeling Kyle’s going to be here a little early.” She replied, giving Ava a wink, before leaving the room.

Forty-five minutes later, Kyle’s dark blue jeep pulled up into the drive way once again. Liz grinned cheekily while thinking ‘he just couldn’t stay away’. They all sat on the porch talking and fooling around as they waited for dinner to get down and for Kyle to show up. Liz couldn’t help calling out something to get under Kyle’s skin. “You’re ten minutes early.” Kyle gave Liz a dirty look before giving Ava his full attention. “Hey Uncle Kyle, weren’t you just here?” Alex asked innocently as he played Uno with his sister.

Liz let out a little snicker, trying to control her inward laughter, as she watched Kyle’s face blanch in embarrassment. Ava looked around puzzled. “You were here? When? Liz, why didn’t you tell me?” Kyle gave Liz a warning look before giving Ava reassuring smile. “I just came by this morning to drop off something…” “What?” “Uh-Uh….” “A recipe.” Liz jumped in coming to the rescue. “You know how I am with coming up with something new for dinner…well I called Amy and she sent Kyle over with it. I totally forgot about it. I’m sorry.” Giving a nod to say that she understood, Ava smiled. After a few moments of conversation, Ava and Kyle drove off into the sunset. Turning around, Liz met Alex and Amelia’s accusatory gazes before shrugging in defense.

* Hi Eve, thanks for the feedback. I know this Pt. is short and really insignificant in the whole scheme of things... but I promise you you'll hear the kids' POV soon. Stay tuned for the next Pt. to Chapter 2

Next Part:
A few days later

The classroom was silent as his mom wrote the assignment on the board. “Please pull out your workbooks and we’ll go over the homework from last night.” Sighing, Alex obeyed. It was their fourth day of school and already he couldn’t wait for summer. It wasn’t as if he hated school… he just knew all this stuff. They were learning about Weather…how easy was that? It didn’t help much that his teacher was his mom and everyone knew it. He had to resist the urge to sucker punch two guys this morning because they called him a mama’s boy. He hated being new. “Okay guys now turn to page 24. Who wants to read the first paragraph out loud?” “Hey Mama’s boy…raise your hand.” Jared Abington whispered before a spit ball hit the side of Alex’s neck.

Alex growled while wiping the offensive ball off his neck. He had only met the guy three days ago and already he hated him. Tall with curly light brown hair and light brown eyes, Jared was already turning into someone everyone else feared, except him. Alexavier Maximos Parker didn’t back down from anyone. Aunt Ava taught him that. “Hey Nimrod, shut your trash lid!” He gritted out before turning around to meet his mother’s disapproving gaze. “Is there a problem gentlemen? Alex?” “No Ms. Parker.” Both Alex and Jared mumbled before Cherelyn began to read again. That girl was such a goody-two-shoes, he thought.

A few hours later:

At the sound of the bell for lunch, Alex made his way out of Ms. Sands’ classroom. The halls were flooded with kids both older and younger than him. After making his way through the staircase and into the lunchroom, he spotted Amelia sitting at a table with that Cherelyn girl. There were other girls as well sitting at the table… that made Alex search around for another place to sit…at that moment he spotted Zan laughing. Giving himself an inward smile, he made his way over to a table full of boys his age. He and his brother had grown closer…since their first visit together…admittedly they weren’t the best friends but they were close “Hey Zan.”

Zan’s laughter stopped upon hearing Alex’s voice. The eyes that landed upon him weren’t warm and Alex’s shoulders stiffened at once at Zan’s words. “Hey Mama’s boy whaddya want…don’t you see I’m talking?” Clenching his jaw, Alex shrugged his shoulders as if to say whatever. “That’s cool… I thought we could just hangout but that’s okay I have a very low tolerance for Jerks.” Before Zan could answer, Alex walked away…stuffing his hands in his jeans. Sitting down at an empty table, Alex started the arduous task of eating his lunch. He hated this school…he hated Roswell in general. The good things about being here were his mom, Aunt Ava, Uncle Kyle, and maybe his dad.

Amelia watched the exchange between her brothers’ with a brooding anger. The voices of her new friends were drowned out as she watched Alex walk away with slumped shoulders. Getting up abruptly, Amelia made her way over to Zan’s table. “Hey big brother.” She greeted before looking down expectantly into the other boy’s eyes. “Can I sit?” “You’re a girl … this for boys’ only.” Amelia gave him a warning smile. “I won’t ask again…move or I’ll become your worst nightmare!”

Scooting over some, the kid moved obviously not liking the look in Amelia’s eyes. “Whaddya want Amelia?” “It’s really simple….world peace. What did you say to him…no it really doesn’t matter what you said. I’m really sorry about your mom Zan. But losing her doesn’t give you the right to stomp all over the people that care about you the most. You need to remember that the next time you’re having temper tantram!” Zan face grew red with embarrassment and anger at her words “I wasn’t having a temper tantrum!” He stuttered out as he watched her walk away.

A few hours later, Zan sat in the back of Ms. Parker’s classroom. He hated being in her class. Frowning fiercely, he completed the assignment. He sighed as he looked up to catch Liz watching him. Giving him a small smile, she went back to discussing the lesson. He had to admit that she was nice to him even when he was mean to her. She had a pretty smile too but not like his mom’s. Zan missed her so much.

He sometimes looked forward to the dreams at night… just to see her face. They really didn’t come anymore. It was strange because when they first started they scared him alot but now that they were almost gone…he wanted them back. His dad had given him all of her pictures so that he could remember her. Zan knew the true reasons were because his dad never wanted them in the first place and because of the woman sitting before him.

He was sad at the prospect of his dad loving Liz Parker instead of him…instead of his mom. Sighing with weariness, he tried to focus on doing the work he loved. Science was his favorite subject. He loved the stars…they reminded him of when his mother was alive and they would look at the stars at night through his dad’s telescope while his mom told him stories about Antar. Coming out of his thoughts at the sound of the bell ringing, Zan stood up as everyone was leaving. The classroom was empty as he got his things together. Turning around to find Liz running a hand through her hair, concern came to life inside of Zan.

“Aren’t you going home?” Liz’s eyes jerked up in surprise at Zan’s voice addressed to her in concern. “No not right now. I have another hour till its time to leave.” “Oh okay. It wasn’t like I cared either way.” He replied with a glare before making his exit. “Bye Zan.” Liz whispered with a small smile. “Yeah, cya.” He muttered before leaving. Making his way into the school yard, Zan spotted his dad, Amelia, and Alex. Looking down at his feet in shame at Alex’s gaze trained on him, Zan made his way past his dad and to the pickup. “How was your day?” Max asked in greeting while unlocking the door. “Stupid as usual!” Zan mumbled.

Max let out a sigh as he folded his large body behind the wheel. Starting the engine and giving a few revs like Alex liked, he smiled as Amelia let out a little giggle and Alex grinned. Zan just sat there, staring out into space. Pulling off, he watched Zan out of the corner of his eye. He was trying his hardest to get back the boy that had always had a permanent grin on his face before Tess’s death. He was starting to feel as if Zan was keeping things from him and that maybe the house was just a reminder of the mistakes they were as a family. “Can I turn on the radio?” Amelia asked looking up at him innocently, a small smile gracing her lips. “Sure go ahead.” He smiled pleasure filling him at his daughter’s sweetness.

As Amelia turned on the radio, the song Let’s Get it Started in Here by Black Eyed Peas came on. “This is Alex’s favorite song…” Amelia grinned as Alex gave a nod in agreement. “Really? Your mom let’s you listen to this?” “Only certain songs…Alex has the CD. Aunt Ava gave it to him.” Nodding his head in an okay, Max smiled while shaking his head. He was taking them to visit his parents. This wasn’t their first visit. The first visit happened over a month ago and it was awkward at best. Having told his parents a week before the visit about Amelia and Alex, they hadn’t been happy to say the least. If words could kill…he would be buried right now.

Diane and Phillip Evans had been beyond disappointment at the news of Max getting Liz pregnant right after Tess and never having known about it until now…eight years later. Giving them a week to come to terms with Alex and Amelia’s existence, Max had decided that it was time for Alex and Amelia to meet their grandparents and they did. Amelia, Alex, and his mother had hit it off right from the start. But his dad was another story altogether, he was polite but quiet through the whole visit.

Max can still feel the anger radiating off of his parents a month later and he didn’t blame them. They had every right to feel disappointment and anger because they had raised him to know better. And to have the knowledge that their son had not only got one girl pregnant but two had devastated them. Max’s actions back then and still now mortify him. He was trying his best to make everything right again…with Zan, Alex, and Amelia, with Liz again…with his parents. Just to think about how much he had to make up for was daunting. How had things become so complicated with his life?

A few hours later, Max pulled up into Liz’s driveway. Zan had decided to stay at his grandparents home…playing Checkers with his grandfather. The visit this time had been a little less awkward. His father had spent time with Alex and Amelia…telling them stories while showing them pictures of family members and playing board games. “So…did you have a good time?” Max asked turning towards Alex and Amelia. They both nodded with enthusiasm as they licked their freeze pops. “Good. C’mon, your mom’s waiting.” Climbing out of the pickup, Max’s intense eyes met Liz’s eyes across the yard.

Turning to look at Alex and Amelia who about ran her over in excitement, Liz laughed. “Did you guys have fun?” “Yeah and guess what?” Amelia asked excitedly. “What?” “Grand Dad Phillip said we could go fishing next weekend if we ask you…” Alex finished, meeting Liz’s eyes inquiringly. “Sure…let me think about it okay? Finish that up and go change your clothes.” Liz advised, meeting Max’s gaze briefly. They had seen each other on and off all week when Max would come to pick up the kids or Zan but they hadn’t had the time to talk that much though…unless you consider small talk conversation.

“Do you want to come in?” Max nodded his head, pleasure filling his handsome features. “Yeah…I would like that” Liz met Max’s smile with a smile of her own before making her way into the house. “Where’s Zan?” “At my parents? He wanted to finish the Checker game with dad.” “Or more like he didn’t want to see me…Do you want something to drink?” “No thanks…that’s not it Liz…” “Oh I think it is. Have you talked to him, Max?” “Yeah…of course I have…why do you ask?” Liz seated herself at the table as she played with a napkin before meeting Max’s eyes with doubt. “I mean have you really talked to talk to him… as far as getting everything out into the open… about Tess, Alex and Amelia, you and me?”

Max remained silent for a few moments avoiding Liz’s eyes before meeting them once again. I haven’t, he thought with self-disgust. “No I haven’t. I’ve been trying everything else except that. I’ve been telling myself that giving him time would be the best answer. I guess not.” Max replied hoarsely before clearing his voice. “How do you that?” “Do what?” She asked smiling at the wonder in his voice. He was so good looking and endearing… that she wondered how long it would be before it took her to give into him?

“How do you know to tell me exactly what I need to hear…even when I don’t want to hear it?” Without thinking, caught up in the moment, Liz spoke. “I guess its called love!” She wanted to kick herself right then at letting that thought out. “I guess so. I’ll call you later.” Max whispered before walking over to kiss her on the forehead, his lips soft, warm, and reassuring. Liz watched from the window as Max’s tall form walked towards his pickup. Love swamped her to the point of drowning her as she watched him drive away. “Oh Max!”

*Thanks for the feedback everyone  Look forward to Chapter 3 soon

*Hey Eliz, that was Amelia that called Max 'dad'. That girl doesn't have any inhibitions when comes to those she cares about

Chapter 3
A Few Months Later

Listening halfheartedly to the lesson being taught, Zan sat in the back of Mrs. Andrew’s class and fiddled with his worksheet. For the past few months, he had had a lot to think about regarding his mother’s death. He remembered one conversation in particular he had had with his dad that had made everything seem a bit clearer. They had just gotten back from eating dinner at Grandma and Granddad’s when his dad had called him in from the yard to talk. Running through the house, Zan had come in to find his father watching a home video. He had not been prepared for the conversation to come. Feeling somewhat content…normal, he remembered his father’s words as if they were said just yesterday:

“What are you watching?” Max looked up from the couch as Zan entered the living room. “A video of myself at your age. We had just been adopted and I remember being so scared…Come sit down.” Sitting down beside his father, Zan had looked up into eyes that were filled with love and fondness. “I can’t imagine you ever being scared.” He whispered, before turning his gaze to the television to watch his dad. “Well I was…I had felt so lost. I remember crying myself to sleep at night…wondering why I couldn’t go home….why I couldn’t have my real parents! Somehow with everything that’s been going on I forgot what that felt like…” “What ‘what’ felt like?” “To lose someone you love…to lose your place in life. I never wanted that to happen to you, Zan.”

Feeling as if something were coming alive inside of him, Zan sat quietly listening. He strove to control his emotions…to control his tears. He wanted to run…to escape his father’s intense scrutiny and words. “I realize that I haven’t been very fair to you…since your mom died. I’m sorry for that...for everything. Do you want to talk about her?” Max asked smiling sadly down into his son’s green eyes. “No…I don’t know. I miss her all the time. Do you?” He grimaced inwardly at his son’s question. He didn’t know how to feel about Tess’s betrayal or her death. He felt numb and maybe a little angry inside at the thought of her. But for Zan’s sake, so as not to hurt his son, he smiled sadly. “A little. We had our problems…you know that. But I loved her…I cared about her.” Zan nodded, convinced that his father was telling the truth. “Do you love Ms. Parker?”

Max froze again at his son’s question. Did he love Liz? He loved her with all of his being…it was almost scary how much. “Yeah, I do. But that doesn’t stop me from loving you any less!” “I know…it’s just that when she’s around…you forget about me and mom!” Zan stated tearfully, looking up into his dad’s eyes in confusion. “That’s not true Zan…I will always love you…think about you…worry about you whether Liz is around or not. You’re my son and I love you...that will never change! Can you tell me why you dislike Liz so much?” Max asked gently, turning towards Zan who shrugged. “You love her…maybe more than you loved mom…and I’m afraid that when you two get together that you won’t want me anymore… that you’ll forget about me the way you forgot about mom!”

“You don’t ever have to worry about that happening, Zan. I’ll never forget about you…I love you too much…to ever conceive of doing that. I’ll never forget about your mom either... We had alot of problems. I won’t try to delude you in that…but I will never forget her.” Max replied sincerely, aching at his son’s despair. Zan nodded with sad relieved smile…hope beginning to overtake the pain and anger in his soul. “Do you dislike Amelia and Alex as well?” “No, not really. Amelia’s always nice to me…even when I’m mean to her. But she is kinda bossy…” Zan admitted with a small frown upon his lips. Max smiled slightly. “Sounds like Isabel. Why have you been mean to Amelia?”

Looking down at his hands in shame, Zan shrugged. “I don’t know…sometimes I just get so angry…at everything!” “Amelia’s your sister Zan…” Max reprimanded quietly. “I know and I’m sorry!” Zan said in defense…never once looking up to meet his father’s disapproving gaze. “It’s okay…just try to be nice from now on. What about Alex? I’ve heard you’ve been calling him a mama’s boy with your friends at school?” Finally he looked up to his dad in guilt. “I was angry at being in Ms. Parker’s class…we were just having fun!” Max sighed inwardly, watching his son’s eyes fill once again with tears. “I know you don’t like Liz…and I understand that. But Alex is your brother…he will be there for you when your friends can’t be. Please try to make an effort to be nice to those who care about you, Zan,... because they're your family.” Max stated gruffly…looking into Zan’s intense green eyes.

Nodding in answer to his dad’s request, Zan felt somehow lighter…as a huge weight was lifted off his heart. Shutting off the television, Max turned to his son. “I know how much you miss your mom…so I think we should go visit her…bring her some flowers? Whaddya think? Do you want to go?” Looking down at his hands before meeting his dad’s inquiring hazel eyes; he thought about visiting his mom and smiled. “Yeah, I want to go.” Max watch the light shine through his son’s eyes once again and thanked whatever 'power that be' that had brought Liz back into his life again. “Okay c’mon…we can go onto Main Street to get some daisies and then head over to the Cemetery.”

Three months later, Zan listened to his teacher talk about multiplication and division. Since that day, every Saturday his dad took him to go say hi to his mom. At first standing in front of his mother’s gravestone, he hadn’t known what to stay….the words that had always threatened to self combust inside of him had refused to come out as he came to the place his mom was buried. His dad had stood beside him the whole time until he had been ready to go home. The dreams had grown non-existant as the months flew by.

In a way, the loss of the dreams had relieved him, because of his lack of sleepwalking, but in another way it had also saddened him, because that was the only remaining contact he had had with his mother and now it was gone. The pain inside of him at her absence had faded to an ache like war wound that had healed but would always be a reminder of what he had lost…his mother. During the months that had passed, he had stopped teasing Alex but until this day they still weren’t close. The only time they talked or played with each other was when Alex and Amelia came over on the weekends.

Ms. Parker was as usual always nice to him, the only difference being he wasn’t as mean to her anymore…maybe it was because his dad liked her so much or maybe it was because Zan had almost gotten over the fear that she would steal his dad away from him. He had realized a long time ago that she had the power to do just that, to get together with his dad, but it had been this long and she still hadn’t. What was her problem? Zan was starting to think that Ms. Parker didn’t like his dad the way he liked her and that confused him. He didn’t know what to think...what to feel about the possibility that Ms. Parker didn’t really like his dad. Should he feel relief or anger?

Shaking himself out of his thoughts, Zan realized that it was almost time for Science. Finishing up the remaining problems on his worksheet he looked at the clock. Confusion filled his mind as the bell rang. He would have to study Ms. Parker’s behavior to see if what he was thinking was true because it couldn’t be true…could it and why would he care if it was? Zan should feel relieved that she wasn’t sinking her claws into his dad but he wasn’t.

Zan wanted his dad to be happy and if Ms. Parker didn’t like him...didn't love him…then that wasn’t possible. Where were these thoughts coming from? He asked himself, beyond puzzled. While, walking with his class to room 305, he was in a daze. His thoughts were jumbled as he entered the classroom. Ms. Parker stood writing on the board as he entered. Giving everyone a smile, Liz’s eyes met Zan’s for an instance…in which everything changed.

Hmm Liz thought as she taught a lesson on Matter. Zan seemed very interested in the lesson today. He was asking questions…participating. He hadn’t disrupted the class with one single remark today on her teaching skills…and he had said hi upon entering the classroom. He never said hi! But the thing that puzzled her most was how his eyes always seemed to be on her even when she wasn’t teaching a lesson…as if she were a fascinating puzzle and he was concentrating hard to figure her out. Liz had sensed a change in him these last few months but this was different…this was eerie. Concentrating on teaching the class, she tried to ignore Zan’s stare but of course it didn’t work. At the end of the day, she was exhausted. Plopping down in her seat, she said goodbye to Ms. Andrew’s class.

Looking to the back, she watched slowly as Zan packed up his book bag. “Zan, can I see you please before you leave?” He looked up with small frown before nodding his dark head. “Sure.” Moments later, Zan stood before her desk with piercing green eyes. “Is everything okay, Zan?” Liz asked in concern. “Yeah, why wouldn’t it be?” “I don’t know…you seemed different today. You were actually nice to me…” His frown deepened as stared at the woman before him. “Don’t take it personally…I was just having a good day!” Liz nodded, inwardly sighing. “OK…if you’re sure every things okay? I’ll see you tomorrow.” “Yeah sure!” Zan muttered making his way to the door before turning back around again. “Why don’t you like my dad?”

Liz froze instantly at the question, surprised. At that moment, Ava chose to make her appearance. “Hey Cornball, you ready?” Blood drained from Zan’s face as he stared up into the eyes of his mother. “You’re dead-you’re dead! I saw you being buried!” Liz stood, knocking over the chair to get to him as he backed up into her sobbing his heart out, ranting and crying. “You’re dead…You’re dead!” Ava stood frozen as she stared down in confusion and anguish at the crying child standing before her. “Zan-Zan…I’m sorry but that’s not your mom…that’s not Tess!” Liz whispered, as she stooped down in front of him…her eyes filled with tears as well. “Yes it is…yes it is…It has to be!” Zan sobbed, never once taking his eyes off of the woman in front of him.

Finally, Ava’s voice returned. Stooping down to come-to-face with the little boy, she smiled sadly…her heart breaking in two. “I’m sorry I’m not your mom, Kid. My name’s Ava… I’m your mom’s Dupe!” Zan really looked at her then….tears clouding his greens eyes as he realized his mom was really dead. “You’re telling the truth aren’t you?” Zan whispered, sobbing. “Yeah!” Ava answered meeting Liz’s eyes over the top of his head. “I gotta go! I’m sorry!” Zan sobbed before running from the classroom in a panic. Both Ava and Liz stood with their eyes attached to the door. Ava was the first one to speak. “I’m sorry, Liz. I-I didn’t know!” Liz nodded, while remembering the expression in Zan’s eyes, before saying, “I know… its okay! He’ll be okay!”

*Hey guys, thanks for the fb  Surprise-surprise...another part. I know this one was kinda sad...but I can promise you that the next one will be somewhat light and with some Max and Liz interaction too. So stay tuned for the next part

A Week Later:

Parking her 05’ Volkswagen Passat outside of Maria’s, Liz looked over to find Ava staring quietly out of the window. “You okay? You could’ve stayed home…” Ava’s eyes flew to her in surprise, while shaking her head in denile. “No. It’s okay. I wanted to come…You saved me from an evening of mopping around the house and getting fat off of Ben & Jerry’s.” Liz nodded in understanding before meeting Ava’s eyes again in concern. “Do you want to talk about it?” “Not right now…plus it isn’t really that major, yo. But I’ll tell you this though…I’ve been through hell when it comes to pain… but to have the knowledge that whenever Kyle looks at me he’s reminded of Tess…that hurts like a bitch! Excuse my language…Amelia and Alex.” Ava whispered, giving the kids’ a small smile of apology.

Following Ava’s gaze to Alex and Amelia, Liz gave them a reassuring smile before meeting Ava’s saddened gaze. “I know how it feels to be rejected…especially when it comes to Tess. But Kyle’s good guy and he cares about you…just give him time to…heal!” Swallowing the knot in her throat, Ava looked down before giving Liz a smile full of tears. “I know…and I will!” Nodding her head in understanding, Liz somberly watched Ava. Taking a deep breath, Ava looked back to the kids and smiled. “Let’s go…par-tay!” Meeting Ava’s eyes once again, she smiled relieved at the sparkle in Ava’s green eyes.

Exiting the car, they made their way onto the porch, carrying gift-wrapped gifts. Seeing as though it was one of Roswell’s better days with the sun shining and a light breeze, Liz made an educated guess and instead of knocking…she twisted the door knob. Opening the door, she found the house was quiet and empty… just as she expected. Moving stealthy through the house with Ava and the kids right behind her, Liz came to a screen door that led out to Annabelle’s birthday party. Stepping out onto the patio, she shaded her eyes against the brightness of the sun. Glancing around, she found Max’s broad, muscled form leaning against a tree in deep conversation with Michael.

As if sensing her intense gaze, Max glanced around before making eye contact with her. Liz’s breath caught in a gasp. His eyes were an intense hazel-brown searing heat through her soul. They had seen each other on and off during the week that had past but they had never really talked. It was funny…really because when they were teenagers there was never a time when they didn’t have time to talk despite being hunted by their enemies and the FBI. Now that they were adults…and had responsibilities, weeks could go by before they could even say hello to each other…much less have a conversation.

Staring across the distance into his eyes right now, Liz was reminded of how potent he was both physically and emotionally. He could turn her world upside down with just a flip of a coin. “Liz…babe, over here.” Maria’s voice intruded, breaking through her thoughts. Breaking eye contact with Max, Liz’s gaze found Maria on the other side of the yard, waving her hands in the air like a lunatic. Beside her was a model-like blonde with big blue eyes and beside her stood an older Sean Deluca. Liz stood frozen in place as she met Sean’s amused blue eyes. “Mom? Mom?” Amelia chanted, before waving a hand in front of Liz’s eyes. Looking down at her daughter, Liz grinned. “Can we go play?”

“Sure…go have fun. Ava?” Liz called, never once taking her eyes off of Sean and Serena. “Let me introduce you to another ex-boyfriend of mine and his wife…” Coming up beside Liz, Ava stood shocked. “Damn Liz...you got around…” “I can’t believe you just said that!” Liz laughed, her eyes going wide with shock as she met Ava’s eyes. “Well believe it…Cornball. Damn…if he wasn’t married.” Liz shook her head in mirth. “What? What would happen if he wasn’t?” “Then he would give Maxie-poo a run for his money…hell he is giving Max a run for his money.” Liz gave Ava a ‘yeah right’ look before walking towards Maria.

With Ava right behind her, Liz traveled the distance toward Maria, Sean, and Serena. Rubbing her hands nervously together and biting her bottom lip, she met Serena’s eyes and just knew…that this was the Serena from the future. Liz didn’t know how she knew…but there something in Serena’s blue eyes…recognition maybe? She didn’t know…she only knew what her instincts were screaming which was that she knew this woman…despite this being their first time meeting. “Hey Ava…Lizzie… this is Serena. Serena this is Liz and Ava.” Shaking Serena’s hand, Liz felt a current of warmth…of recognition. “Oh yeah… and of course you remember Sean, Liz?” Maria asked teasingly.

After rolling her eyes towards the sky, she met Sean’s eyes and gave him a warm smile. “Hey Liz…I’m glad you’re back!” She nodded…meeting Serena’s eyes. “Me too.” “So you’re Cherry’s teacher? I’m glad…if I had my wish of anyone being my baby’s girl’s teacher…you would be it.” His warm eyes spoke the words that never left his mouth and those were that he was proud of her. “Thank you! You have a good guy here Serena don’t let him go.” Serena nodded, her eyes meeting Liz in kinship and concern. “You have a good guy as well!” Blinking in surprise, Liz followed Serena’s eyes to where Max was laughing with Amelia.

She couldn’t lie to herself…. Max was definitely one of the best but was he for her? In the past few months…as much as she fought it… she felt as if she were truly healing again. A normal routine…balance… time had a way of healing her like nothing else could. She could look at Max today and not have an overwhelming fear to run. She felt better knowing that if she and Max never got back together…that she would be okay. Liz hadn’t felt that way a few months ago…she hadn’t felt as if she wanted to get on with her life…to move past the pain of having the first man she’d ever love break her heart time and time again. But today…something inside of her had changed. Something inside of her had longed for companionship…with a man…with Max.

Liz yearned to take the necessary steps to see where things were going to go…to see what was in her future other than her kids and friends. Despite having these feelings, the fear wasn’t gone but smothered somewhat in contentment. “Hey, don’t I know you from somewhere? Aren’t you that blonde who passed away…Max’s wife?” Her musings were cut short as she turned around to meet Sean’s bewildered eyes. Somberly as she thought about Tess, she met Ava’s sympathetic green eyes with sympathy of her own. Even in death, Tess still had the power to hurt them all.

“No…I’m her twin sister, Ava.” “I’m sorry…” He whispered in confusion and embarrassment as Serena rubbed his arm in support…watching Ava with veiled suspicion. “No-no that’s okay. Everyone makes the mistake of mistaking me for her! I’m gonna go get something to drink…I’ll be back later!” Ava whispered in defeat before making her way to the punch table. Silence reined for a few seconds as they watched Ava walk away. “If you’ll excuse as well…I have to see if she’s alright. Serena it was nice to meet you and Sean… it was nice seeing you again. I’m happy for you.” Blue eyes filled with self loathing, Sean still stared at Ava’s retreating back. “I’m sorry, Liz!” “It’s okay!” She replied with a small smile before moving towards the punch table.

“You okay?” Liz asked standing beside Ava at the punch table as she watched the kids splashing in the small pool. “Yeah…I’m sorry about how I acted ova there. It’s just frustrating always being compared to someone else… especially someone who wasn’t very much liked.” She replied meeting Liz’s eyes in defeat. “I wish I could say something to you awe inspiring…something that will help you feel better but I can’t. Roswell’s a small town and there’s no way it’s going to be easy for you. People are going to mistake you for Tess…left and right but what you need to remember is that…you’re not her. You’re Ava. You’re a woman people will feel lucky to know!” Liz stated holding up her cup of juice in a toast. Ava grinned. “Thanks.” She said tapping the cup with her own. “You’re welcome.”

***********

Max watched Liz from a distance. The wind blew lightly through her shoulder length dark chocolate stresses, curling slightly. She wore a light pink striped sun-dress that clung slightly but elegantly to her curves, complimenting her complexion. She had pulled her hair back into clip, letting it hang to her shoulders. Her eyes sparkled with mirth and maturity that he found refreshing. They hadn’t talked in a while to Max’s displeasure. Being eight years without her was and now having her suddenly back in his life was starting to weigh on him emotionally.

When he wasn’t thinking about Zan, Alex, or Amelia…he was always thinking about her…reminiscing…yearning. Things between them, as fast as he tried to move them, were going at a snail’s pace. He felt at any moment now that she was going to up and leave again and that he would never have the chance to make things up to her…much less spend the rest of his life with her.

Max hadn’t talked to Zan about it yet but he would. Things between them were progressing along to his pleasure. Zan was finally coming back… becoming who he was when Tess was still alive. He was finding that Zan no longer had dreams in which he would dream walk downstairs or into Tess’s room. Max often looked at the home that they had built together and thought about tearing it down with his bear hands. There were too many bad memories in that house over exceeding the good ones. He wanted out. He wanted to start out fresh again in a new environment. Max knew Zan wouldn’t be happy with this and that was the only reason that kept him from selling the damn place.

At night, Max had to fight the urge to call her…just to hear her voice… just as he was fighting the urge now to go over to her. She needed time and he would give her that but for how long? Max had gone eight years missing her…wanting to hear her voice…yearning for what they once had and he had survived. It was because of Zan that he had stayed married to Tess…that he had put up with her suspicious nature. He would’ve gone through hell it self for Zan and he still would but now he had Alex, Amelia, and Liz to think about. They were just as much a part of his soul as Zan was.

A few months ago, he had decided that he would take what he could get…if that meant that Liz would forgive him and that still stood to this day. But there was a restlessness inside of him…an empty hole growing larger and larger each second he saw or thought about her and what they could have. Max itched not only physically to have her…but emotionally and intellectually. He would sometimes awake in the morning to find an intense ache in his heart at the thought of losing her when he had never had her in the first place. He wanted more for them than a friendship…he wanted forever.

‘Aww the hell with it’ he thought as he stood watching her talk to Ava. They were only going to talk. Walking the distance that separated them, Max stood silently behind Liz…listening to her voice…to her laughter. Ava looked up at his presence and grew sober. “Oh, Liz?” She said nodding her head in Max’s direction. Liz turned slowly to see Max standing before her. His tall form blocking out the sun that was now beating down upon them. “Hey Max.” “Hey.” He replied with the obvious pleasure that filled his voice that she had tried to mask in her own. “Ava.” He said, nodding greeting. “Max.” She replied, nodding her head. “I see Isabel…I’ll just be going…” “No you don’t have to…”Liz started to say before Ava gave her a knowing smile and wink.

Rolling her eyes towards the sky at Ava retreating form, Liz turned towards Max. He looked down into her chocolate brown eyes and like always felt as if he were home. There was a sparkle in her eyes that hadn’t been there in along time. Biting her bottom lip nervously, she looked down before gazing into his eyes again. “I just wanted to apologize for what happen to Zan the other day!” Max grew somber than at the memory of his son’s tears. “It’s okay…he’s okay. He just had a little shock. He knew Tess had a dupe and had even met her the day you came back but...I guess seeing his mother’s twin in the looks department kind of spooked him.” Liz nodded, turning to watch the kids play. “Is he okay?” Max nodded, watching Zan splash Amelia. “Yeah…just a little embarrassed…Don’t be surprised if he doesn’t look you in the eyes for a few days.”

Smiling sadly, she nodded. Max watched her intently. They stood in a companionable silence for a few seconds before Liz finally spoke. “You know the vision you saw inside of me, Max ,of your future self and how the world came to an end?” “Yeah?” Max replied, stiffening at the dread feeling him. “Well you’ve met Serena right?” She asked hesitantly turning to meet his burning gaze. “Yeah…today actually, why?” “Well the future version of you mentioned her…you said that she was my best friend…” “In the future? She knows about us…” He whispered, panic feeling his voice. “Max…just stop okay. I changed the future…so there’s a possibility that she may not know anything.” “But there’s a possibility that she could know something…stay away from her Liz…please?”

Sighing, Liz shook her head. “Alright, I’ll stay away from her…what are you going to do?” “I don’t know.” Max sighed wearily, stuffing his hands in his jeans. “Whatever you’re going to do…just be careful okay?” She whispered, looking up into his eyes in concern. “If I didn’t know any better Liz…I’d think you were concerned about me?” He said teasingly, with a slight smile. “I’m always concerned about you, Max. That was never the problem.” Nodding, he looked down before meeting her eyes again with pleasure. “Would you like to go to a movie this Saturday?” Surprised, Liz turned away from to watch the kids. “Max...” “Just as friends…nothing more.” “I don’t know!” “Just think about it Liz…I wanted to go see Sin City 3 but if you want to see something else…than” Liz smiled at his engaging grin. “I’ll think about.” “Thank you.” He replied, excitement fulfilling him at the prospect of taking Liz out.

***********

A few hours later, Liz, Maria, Isabel, and Ava sat on the deck eating cake and talking.
Music blared out through the yard…but not loud enough to disturb the neighbors. The men were huddled around the grill talking about sports. Sighing, Liz leaned back into her chair as she watched Amelia, Alex, and Zan argue over what cartoon was the best. “So Liz…what’s going on with you and my brother?” Isabel asked teasingly, interrupting her thoughts. “Nothings going on Isabel…we’re just friends…” “Yeah right.” Maria interrupted with a snort.

“What?” Liz asked indignantly. “You called it friends…I call it denial.” Rolling her eyes skyward, Liz shook her head. “She’s right you know? You and Max are not friends…you could never be just friends. I know my brother…in the past few months he’s been listening to the Counting Crows every time I stop by the house…and he hasn’t listened to the Counting Crows in years.” Liz knew what that meant but she wanted to hear it from Isabel. “So what does that mean?” Isabel gave her a look that said you know what it means. “What does it mean?” Ava asked, repeating the question. “That he’s in-love with her…whenever you hear that song in that house…you know Liz is somewhere on his mind. Look at him…he hasn’t taken eyes off of you since your arrival!” Maria laughed, while holding Mikhail in her arms.

“Hey Isabel…I’ve been meaning to ask you this question…does Jesse know about…you know?” Liz asked, trying to evade the subject and out of serious curiosity. But Maria wasn’t fooled. “Oh no you don’t Liz Parker. Answer the question quickly Isabel…this conversation is not over Liz!” Maria stated frowning fiercely as Liz ducked her head. “Yeah he knows…when we first got married I was very much prepared not to tell him anything but then I was shot and Max almost died and it just unraveled from there.” Isabel replied with a sigh. “Did he take it well?” “No…not at first but after awhile he started to come around. I guess it was love…I never knew someone else other than Alex…who could love me for me but he does.”

Liz nodded, truly happy for Isabel. “See Chica…love only comes along once in a life time…twice if you’re lucky!” Looking at Maria who sat across from her, Liz thought about Max. “What are you trying to say Maria?” “That you need to give the guy a break…I’ve never agreed with some of his choices…but he loves you and I know you love him. Everything that happened, Liz, is the past and I’m afraid Chica that you will never find someone who loves you the way Max loves you. And that you will never love anyone the way you love Max. To state it simply Girlfriend… I’m afraid that you’ll end up alone…and I don’t want that for you. So can you please give him a chance?”

There silence for a few moments at the table before Liz spoke. “I can’t…I’m sorry. I love Max…you that but what I realized is that before I can get into a relationship with Max…I have to know that I can trust him…that I can trust us. Just because Tess is gone…doesn’t mean that now we can just get together and everything would be okay because it wouldn’t. Max knows this and if he really loves me like you believe he does…then he will give me time. That is not negotiate-able.” Liz stated firmly. Everyone nodded slowly in agreement. “You go girl!” Ava laughed, breaking the tension …as well as making everyone else laugh.

Listening intently to conversation going on at the table, Liz laughed. Glancing up, she met Max’s eyes across the distance. Smiling, he whispered into the breeze the three words that made her heart clench. ‘I Love You’. Before she could stop herself, she replied with a heart felt: ‘I Love You too.’ Berating herself, Liz turned away focusing in on what Isabel was saying. The fates must have had something against her because at that moment their song, I Shall Believe by Sheryl Crow, came on.

Come to me now
And lay your hands over me
Even if it's a lie
Say it will be alright
And I shall believe

Liz sat frozen, listening to the lyrics. At that exact moment, she felt Max behind her. Her heart pounded wildly…her breathing was shallow as she turned her head to see Max’s outstretched hand. Oh God. “May I have this dance?” There was silence at the table…in the yard all together as she met Max’s hazel brown eyes filled with longing. “Max?” “Please…take my hand, Liz!” Hope, love, and longing crashed through her barriers until she was swamped with it. Taking his hand slowly, Liz once again felt complete. Moving into the middle of the yard, Max pulled her gently into his arms…swaying slightly to the breeze.

I'm broken in two
And I know you're on to me
That I only come home
When I'm so all alone
But I do believe

That not everything is gonna be the way
You think it ought to be
It seems like every time I try to make it right
It all comes down on me
Please say honestly you won't give up on me
And I shall believe
And I shall believe

Open the door
And show me your face tonight
I know it's true
No one heals me like you
And you hold the key

Never again
would I turn away from you
I'm so heavy tonight
But your love is alright
And I do believe

That not everything is gonna be the way
You think it ought to be
It seems like every time I try to make it right
It all comes down on me
Please say honestly
You won't give up on me
And I shall believe
I shall believe
And I shall believe

That not everything is gonna be the way
You think it ought to be
It seems like every time I try to make it right
It all comes down on me
Please say honestly you won't give up on me
I shall believe...

Please say honestly
You won't give up on me
And I shall believe
I shall believe
And I shall believe...
