A broken down house
"I don't want to even begin with how disappointed I am with all of you!" Valenti protested as he paced back and forth with his arms behind his back. The eight of them stood in a military stand, but with their heads staring at the tiles of the floor in resentment. "To even think that you guys would put me and your family's in such a position." Valenti stop pacing and faced Max, "Max, really. I expected more from you." Max tried to explain but no words would come out of his mouth, so he just looked down again.
"Hey! Lay off Valenti. We needed a break, o.k." Michael said after watching the unfair verbal attack towards Max. "A break!?!" Valenti yelled. "Yea, a break. I deserved one after what I've been through. After what we've all been through.”
Valenti walked towards him, "Michael. I understand what you’re going through. But you just can’t pick up and leave whenever you want, without have people asking questions!"
"Hey! Don't tell me you know how I feel. Cause you have no idea of what I'm going through!"
"Michael" Maria said calmly rubbing his shoulder.
"Dad, we're sorry!" Kyle apologized through the cold stares Michael was giving Valenti.
"Well, I'm sorry too." Valenti sat down as the others waited to hear what he was going to say. "Your parents have decided that your punishment would be decided by me and only me. The school has agreed also with my decision. You would begin reshaping this house until I'm satisfied with the results. But you all have to agree to my terms or you will be suspended."
"Well then, I don't agree.” Michael stated with a grim smirk on his face. “School was never a priority to me, so I'd guess your threat doesn't apply to me. "
"See Michael, I knew you would be the only one to rebel. So you ALL have to agree with the terms, and if one and only one of you disagrees, you all would be suspended!"
"Hey, I don't have to do anything!" Michael protested as he has walking out the door.
"Michael, you will do it." Hearing Valenti's say this with such assurance stopped him to continue hearing his empty-threat. "Parent or no parent, you forget this is a legal matter also." Valenti threatened.
"How?" Liz asked the question that ran through everyone's heads.
"Apparently, your little so called ' break ' was so needed, that you couldn't even wait until after school. Since Michael is considered an adult under the laws eyes, he kidnapped seven under age kids from school grounds..." Valenti began to walk towards Michael. "...And if you don't agree with my terms, Michael would be arrested and the rest of you will face a suspension and a discipline referral would be written and noted in your permanent records." Valenti walked behind Max and Liz, putting his arms around them, pulling them closer, "So, who doesn't agree?" Valenti asked as he sat in the reclining chair with a big smile as he kicked up his feet on the coffee table.
"You’re bluffing." Michael said facing towards him.
"Try me." Valenti warned.
Outside the house, in a parked car a man dressed in black sweats is talking on a cell phone.
"We have visual on all of the targets. Still no confirmation on individual identities."
They all exited the broken down house. Valenti took Kyle and Tess to his car, Max and Liz took off in the jeep and in Maria’s car she followed with Michael, Alex, and Isabel.
“Stand down and maintain visual contact. Do not breach the perimeter! Any sign of our girls?”
“Yes sir. All four of them.”
“Excellent progress, PR-17. Keep my informed, we wait till they’re alone…then we’ll attack.”
“Will do sir.”
At The Crashdown
“Can you believe Valenti? I mean how cold…using the school and Michael against us!” Maria was recapping the conversation as she picked up the empty cups on the tables while Liz wiped them off. “Liz!?” Maria yelled but Liz didn’t seem to hear her, being preoccupied with something else. “Liz!” Maria called again.
“Huh? Oh, Maria! Sorry.” Liz blushed. “What? Having another shower scene fantasy with Max in the girls’ locker room?” Maria asked with a small giggle, as she raised her eyebrows up and down, poking Liz with her elbow.
“No. It’s…it’s…different,” Liz laughed.
“Oh, God! He’s not in the shower with you this time. Is he?” Maria asked grasping to the collar of her uniform.
“Maria! I’m just thinking about Tess.” Liz confessed to Maria with a little chuckle after Maria’s previous assumption.
“Tess!? Why?” Maria asked with a shocked expression on her face. “I don’t know. I treated her kind of bad in Vegas. I just…”
“Liz seriously. She’s practically Max’s wife and not to mention the reason why you and Max are not together.”
“It’s not all her fault you know. She didn’t choose to be his wife.” Liz defended.
“Ohhhh, right. That whole destiny thing again. She must cringe at the thought of being with Max.” Maria said sarcastically looking at the ceiling.
Maria followed Liz to the back of the diner, to the lockers. “Liz, when are you going to snap out of it and go back with Max?”
“Maria, you know I can’t.” Liz said with sorrow holding back some tears.
“Why, because somebody who looks like Max told you?” Liz looked at her and began to notice she was headed with that remark. “For real Liz. Think about it. If this destiny thing was such a life threatening issue, would I be with Michael?” Liz looked up with tears in her eyes and understood what Maria was saying. “I mean if it was that critical, Michael wouldn’t be with me, but instead he’d be with that blond Barbie doll…”
The door flung open, swinging back and forth rhythmically, “Who’s a Barbie doll?” Isabel asked even though she overheard the whole conversation.
“Oh, nobody sweetie. Just somebody that looks like you.” Maria laughed.
“Ha, ha.” Isabel said rolling her eyes. “I see why Michael is so attached to you. Same dry sense of humor.” Maria smirked as Liz wiped her tears away with her back turned away from them. “I see we’re still in the ‘Max-depression’ world.” Isabel claimed, almost getting nauseous from witnessing such emotions towards her brother.
"What are you doing here?” Liz asked concerned on Isabel’s presence without Max or Michael. “Alex isn’t here.”
“I know. I wasn’t looking for Alex. I was looking for you guys.” Isabel dropped a world of shock on both of their faces. “I was hoping you guys would maybe want to hang out. You know like a normal friendship without the FBI, Valenti or Max and Michael.”
“Your kidding right?” Maria laughed, but stopped when she saw the expression of seriousness on Isabel’s face.
“Sure.” Liz said accepting with a smile. “I was thinking about the same thing. Maybe we should ask Tess to join us too?”
“Oh, yeah! Girls night out!” Maria yelled.
Broken down house the next day
“Well it’s good to see you all could make it…” Valenti scanned them up and down, but stopped when he saw Michael, “Michael. Glad to see you could make it,” he said smiling as he walked away.
“Yeah, whatever. Let’s just get this over with.” Michael hated how Valenti was using him over them.
“Now for the rules and regulations.” Valenti said rubbing his hands together in a scamming manner. “Let’s see…Liz and Tess in the kitchen. Isabel and Alex in the office. Michael and Max in the bathroom. Maria and Kyle in the living room. When your done come back and get your next assignments.”
Isabel, Tess, Michael, and Max looked at each other and smiled. “Oh and before I forget. There would be absolutely no use of powers in the remodeling. If I find out there was tampering, and I will, there will be double the work and double the sentence for all of you. I’ll be watching all of you.” Valenti warned with his finger pointing at them. “Come on! Let’s get to work,” he said clapping his hands together. They all separated into different rooms to begin the work.
The Kitchen
“I can’t believe we have to do this.” Tess said as she sprayed the cleaner on the refrigerator. “Yeah, well he could be pretty strict sometimes, especially now that he knows ‘everything’ now.” Liz giggled.
“Um…Tess?” Liz stopped wiping the counters.
“Yeah?”
“I’m sorry for being so Mary Poppins on you the other day in Vegas. I guess I must be really dull, huh?”
“It’s not that, Liz. It’s just…you’re the type that has never needed to break the rules. Since I was always on the run, I guess I’m just use to breaking the rules.”
“Look Tess. I know we haven’t been the best of friends, especially with this whole Max issue, but I would like to get to know you better.”
“You mean like starting all over?” Tess asked confused at Liz’s proposition.
“Yeah, like…‘Hi. I’m Liz Parker!” Liz introduced herself with a smile as she held out her hand. “Tess Harding. I’m new here.” Tess replied shaking Liz’s hand, following along with her game.
“A couple of friends of mine were thinking about movies, pizza, makeovers. Your welcome to come…that is if you’re not busy.” Liz asked.
“Sure, I’d love to.” Tess smiled back, “What should I bring?”
“Toothbrush, pillow, blanket, and everything else you use. It’s a sleepover.” Tess nodded her head and they both smiled.
The Bathroom
“I can’t believe Valenti! Blackmailing us like that.” Michael said as he was knelt down scrubbing the outside of the toilet. Max suddenly busted out laughing. “What’s so funny?”
“Nothing. It’s just…could you imagine what ‘our people’ would think if they saw us like this. Their leader and his second-in-command scrubbing the toilet of another man’s bathroom.” Max continued to laugh.
“Yeah, laugh it up Maxwell, cause when the ‘second-in-command’ is scrubbing the outside of the toilet…the ‘leader’ will be scrubbing the inside.” Michael said grinning. Max stopped laughing and they both stood up and tip their heads over the toilet, and noticed it bubble. Max swallowed his breath and Michael slapped him one time on the back, “Good luck.”
The Hallway
“Another bedroom!” Isabel said closing the door.
“Yeah, same here.” Alex yelled.
“What is that three already?” Isabel counted. “We’re never going to find the office!”
The living room
“This is like so not funny. I’ve seen the restaurant in better conditions.” Maria complained as she picked up a torn bag of potato chips from the tips with her thumb and pointing finger. “God! What’s that smell? I feel sorry for whoever lived in this dump.”
“Maria! Are you going to clean or complain?” Kyle yelled frustrated on Maria’s whining.
“Well, I’m sorry I don’t live like an anim…oh! Oh!” Maria started screaming and pointed to the T.V.
“What?! What?!” Kyle asked, startled by Maria’s yell.
“I saw something move.” Maria said standing on top of the couch with on hand over her mouth and the other on her stomach.
“Where?” Kyle asked, kneeling on the floor to look around.
“Under the T.V.” Maria pointed and shivered at the thought of what it could be. Kyle began to laugh, “What?! What is it?” Maria asked while Kyle stood up and showed her a black ball.
“I must have kicked it.” Kyle told her.
“Oh.” Maria said embarrassed after her performance and began to pick up around, but still looked around just incase.
Later on that night at Liz’s place
A knock was heard on Liz’s bedroom door. Liz ran to open it with a spoon in her mouth. “Hi, Tess. Glad you could make it.” Tess walked slowly to the center of the room, holding the strap of her bag over her shoulder. She noticed Maria and Isabel already in their nightgowns, watching a rerun of ‘I Love Lucy’ while eating the ice creams that was in the middle of them.
“Hi.” Maria and Isabel said simultaneously.
“Hi.” Tess said uncomfortable.
“You could change in the bathroom.” Liz pointed in the direction of the bathroom. “We haven’t started the movies yet. We were waiting for you to come.” When Tess came out of the bathroom Liz was popping in the video into the VCR.
“So what are we watching?” Tess asked grabbing the casing of the video as she sat down next to Isabel. “Fear? Never seen it.” She stated after reading the cover. Tess looked up at them, they all looked surprised.
Maria’s spoon fell out of her mouth, “Your kidding right?” Looking at Tess’s reaction she could see she wasn’t, “You’re not kidding. Well, Tess there’s a first time for everything.”
Isabel smiled rolling her eyes as Liz handed her a spoon, “Ah, yes we have Tabasco and non-Tabasco.” Liz waved her hands around the ice cream as if it were on display.
“Definitely Tabasco!” Tess said while dipping her spoon into the ice cream, making them laugh.
At school by Tess’s locker
Maria, Isabel and Liz come up to Tess. “Hi Tess. You want to get some lunch?” Liz asked.
“Sure. Where?” Tess asked.
“The mall.” Isabel blurted out before Liz could say where.
“Yea, Isabel’s second home.” Maria said giggling.
The school parking lot
“Hurry up! I think I see Michael!” Liz yelled running to the passenger side of Maria’s car. They began to drive to the mall. Tess is sitting behind Liz and Isabel is sitting behind Maria.
“Great! Now he’s going to tell Max. I’m telling you, your brother is getting a little over protective on us Isabel.” Maria said hitting the steering wheel then looking at Isabel through the rear view mirror.
“You don’t need to tell me, I live with him! At least you guys don’t have somebody checking up o you every five minutes.”
“Uh…hello!” Tess said putting the tips of her fingers below her throat so they could acknowledge her. “I’m the one living with the one who has us working in that god awful dump.”
“Not to mention Deputy Kyle.” Maria laughed, “Sorry, but at least your mom doesn’t check your room every night at least once to make sure theirs no one sleeping with me.”
“Michael got caught in your bed?!!” Isabel asked surprised.
“Well, my mom checks my room every morning. Ever since that day with the orbs…” Liz trailed off trying to avoid mentioning Max. Plus, she just wanted to take the spotlight off of Maria.
“So did you guys sleep or…” Maria stopped Tess with a mouth full of words. Realizing Tess’s insinuation Maria rapidly answered, ”We only slept!” Isabel, Tess, and Liz shared a giggling look on Maria’s aggravation.
Outside the school cafeteria
Man #1: “The girls are on the move, but the guys are all still here.”
Man #2: “We maintain our position. The guys are the ones we want.”
Man #1: “Sir, we could use the girls as bait, they seem to be their weaknesses.”
Man #2: “Good observation, PR-17. Set it up and inform me with the details, ASAP.”
Man #1: “Will do sir.”
Inner cafeteria
“They just left!” Michael paced around Max, while Kyle and Alex ate their sandwiches, following Michaels’ movements with their eyes. “I don’t like this Maxwell.” Michael crossed his arms waiting for Max’s response. “Max, there up to something.”
“What would you like me to do Michael? Stalk them?” Max said sarcastically.
“Stalking is more Michael’s field.” Alex said regretfully after the looks that Michael was giving him. Kyle busted out laughing.
“Let it go Michael. What’s wrong with you? You think they’re plotting against you or something?” Kyle asked.
“They’re with Maria.” Michael pointed out with the movement of his eyebrows.
“Oh!” They all said smiling, getting at what Michael was hinting at.
In the mall
Maria and Isabel leave to use the bathroom, while Liz and Tess wait in the food court for them. “Um…Liz?” Tess asked. Liz looked up at her with a straw in her mouth, “Did you really mean all of those stuff back at my house?”
“What stuff?” Liz asked with a little wrinkle on her forehead.
“The stuff you said about Max…about being in love?”
“Yes.” Liz responded without hesitation. “I love him. I’m miserable without him. Sometimes…I feel like…like a big part of me is missing. Everything I see reminds me of him…my first and only love.” Liz looked down, trying to hide the tears of pain on bringing Max up again.
“I’m sorry Liz.” Tess said putting her hand on Liz’s shoulder for comfort.
“Do you love him?” Liz asked letting out a trail of tears.
“Yes…but not like you do.” Liz looked up at Tess’s sincerity and began to cry. “I know I’m suppose to be with him, cause of what we are, but I don’t love him. I’m sorry I tried to separate you two. Liz, I was just reminded everyday on who I was suppose to be with, and never asked who I wanted to be with. It just got…confusing.” Tess confessed beginning to cry as well. “But you and Max belong together, not separated. I’ve seen him and he’s not Max without you.” Tess said smiling.
“But what…what about…” Liz was too broken up to finish what she wanted to ask.
“What about our destiny?” Tess finished her question and Liz nodded. “That’s just it. Being with him is not my destiny but yours.” Liz and Tess smiled and gave each other a tight hug.
“Thank you!” Liz whispered in Tess’s ear.
“Make him happy.” Tess replied.
“What’s going on?” Maria asked.
“Oh, nothing. Liz just decided to try and get back together with Max.” Tess said bringing Maria and Isabel up to date. They all screamed of happiness but gained control by the stares of the other shoppers.
In Liz’s house
After school Maria, Liz, Tess and Isabel are all sitting on Liz’s bed chatting about Max, Michael, Alex and Kyle. Then all of the sudden the door flung open and Liz’s mom appeared on the door. “Oh! Sorry girls. I just thought…I thought…never mind.” Mrs. Parker cupped her check in embarrassment and exited the room, closing the door behind her. The girls didn’t even have time to react for how startled they were, until Liz broke the silence.
“See! This is exactly what I’m talking about. I can’t wait till I have my own apartment.” Liz said in rage, knowing that her mom thought Max was in her room.
Maria had a big smile on her face, “Guys that’s it!”
“What’s it?” Isabel asked.
“We should get our own apartment. For the four of us.”
“Get real Maria. I could really see our parents letting us. It would never happen.” Liz said throwing herself on the bed, clutching on to her pillow.
”No, no. Hear me out. If we get something near by, cheap, and promise to visit everyday or something, I’m sure they’ll let us.” Maria said twirling the corner of her pillow with her fingers. “She’s right! Liz, do you have a newspaper?” Tess asked.
“Yeah there’s one downstairs. I’ll go get it.” Liz ran downstairs and snagged the paper, running back up the stairs in record timing. After they finished planning their proposal, they would take it to their parents tomorrow.
At the Crashdown
The next day, the Crashdown was closed for an hour. Diane and Jeff Evans were sitting across from Amy De Luca and Valenti in a booth, while Liz’s parents sat in two separate seats. Isabel was the one propositioning everything, seeing how she was the only one out of the four of them that had gotten into the least amount of trouble. “See that’s why we need our own place.” Isabel finished explaining.
“Your just to young, all of you.” Liz’s mom stated.
“Mom, look. We get an apartment for a month or two. If it doesn’t work out, we’d come back. Tess and Isabel would get a job. Maria and I will continue to work here. We’ll check in every other day by phone or visitation. We’ll look for an apartment near the school, giving us no excuses on being late or absent. It would be the four of use, so we won’t be alone, trust us.”
Diane was impressed on how organized and prepared the girls were for this. “I trust you, sweetie. So therefore it’s ok with me. Isabel ran to her mother and hugged her.
“Me too.” Amy smiled.
“I don’t know.” Liz’s mom said. “I could understand how you could be uncomfortable with this, but I trust my daughter, just like how I trust Liz and Maria. Don’t you trust them?” Diane said putting a big smile on Isabel’s face. Liz’s mom finally gave in and stated that Liz had to check in every other day. Liz nodded and hugged her.
So far everyone accepted except Valenti. Tess sat next to him holding his hands, “I know you’re not my father, but I sure see you as one. I’ve been through so much and you and Kyle have been wonderful towards me. I don’t really need your permission…but I’m asking you…please!” Tess finished it of with battering her puppy-dog look at him and he finally accepted trying to hold back the tears. The girls all yelled, hugging each other and than hugged their parents.
Outside the Crashdown
Man #1: “Did you get that?”
Man #3: “Yes, it’s being organized as we speak. And we didn’t even have to make a shadow
apartment, there’s one that we could use that an old lady is renting out.”
Man #1: “Excellent. Is she one of ours?”
Man #3: “ No, sir. She’s your typical Roswell human citizen. We got lucky on this part.”
Outside Isabel’s house
The next morning Isabel, Liz, Maria and Tess are sitting on the front door steps looking through the newspaper for apartments. “Oh, look at that one!” Tess pointed out.
“Nope, too expensive.” Maria sadly said.
“Hello ladies.” A tall, well-built man in his early 20s walked up to them, dressed in a postal uniform. His shaded eyes were covered by the cap he had on his head.
“Hello.” They all said with a cheesy smile.
“What are you guys doing?” the man asked in reference to the newspaper.
“Why?” Maria blurted out bluntly, but caught an elbow to her side by Isabel.
“What she meant was, were looking for an apartment.” The girls laughed noticing Isabel’s obvious flirt.
“Oh, yeah? Believe me that it’s harder than it seems. I’m looking for an apartment as well.”
“Really?” Isabel asked. The other girls just kept quiet, letting Isabel work her magic.
“Yeah. I found an apartment about a mile from here, but it’s a beautiful, 5 bedroom, $400 with utilities included.”
“Wow! Sounds like a real deal. But why didn’t you take it?” Liz asked to see if they still had a chance to apply for the apartment.
“No pets. And I doubt they’ll make an exception for me and my two rockweilders.” He said with a grin handing her a bundle of envelopes bound with a rubber band, “Well, anyways. Here’s your mail. Sorry about going on like that.”
“If you don’t mind me asking. Is the apartment still available?” Liz asked hopefully as he was walking away.
He walked back towards them, pulling out a red marker from his back pocket, “It’s right here on page 3A,” he circled the ad and handed the newspaper to Liz. “I’ll see you around. Good day ladies,” he said tipping his hat in courtesy and walked away.
“Can you believe that?” Liz said excited.
“Yeah. He didn’t even ask for Isabel’s number. Or any of ours might I add. There was some serious flirting going on there and nothing. I think your losing your touch Isabel.” Maria pointed out.
“Not that! The apartment. It’s perfect for us. It even has one room more than we need.” Liz re-informed them since it was obvious they paid no attention to what the postman said over the apartment.
“Let’s go check it out.” Tess stood up from the step that they were sitting on.
“Now?” Maria asked.
“Yeah, let’s go.” Tess said grabbing Maria’s arm and pulled her towards the car.
“Wait! Shouldn’t we tell your mom where were going?” Liz asked.
“Alright! Alright, if that would get you to calm down.” Isabel jogged inside her house.
Inside the Evans’ kitchen
“Mom! Were going to check out an apartment, I’m putting the ad on the refrigerator. It’s the one that’s circled in red. Bye!” Isabel said quickly, kissing her mom on the cheek and bolted out the door. Isabel noticed that they were all waiting in the car and cheered. “Let’s go!”
Man #3: “The girls are on the move. Heading towards the apartment. Soon.”
At the apartment
‘Ding! Ding!’ Isabel rang the doorbell. They stood waiting around, but no one answered. A man wearing a chef’s hat and a ‘kiss the cook’ apron came from the side of the house.
"Can I help you ladies with something?” the man asked twirling the spatula he had, in his hand.
“Um…yeah. We’re looking for the person that’s renting the apartment. Is that you?” Liz asked the man.
“Oh, no. The person you’re looking for is Mrs. Whiteman. But you have to go through the back, the doorbells don’t work.” He began to lead them towards the back in a straight line, with him ahead of them. “She’s been living here for 25 years and she’s finally remodeling the place.
From what the construction guy told me, it would be done in a week.”
When they reached the back door, Maria and Isabel were hit behind their heads and knocked out cold, while Liz and Tess were held down and injected, soon losing consciousness.
“Let’s get them to the building.” The man said taking off his hat and apron, then picking up Liz and carried her to the van. The three other men picked up Isabel, Tess, and Maria, and took them to the car as well.
Evan’s House
Two hours later, Diane was beginning to get worried but was a bit
relieved when she hard Max come in. He came holding a pizza and laughing with Michael, “Hi mom, want some pizza?”
“Oh Max! Thank God your home.” She ran and hugs him and managed to hug Michael as well.
“Mom what’s wrong?” Max asked as he handed the pizza to Michael so he could lay it down on the counter.
“Your sister and the girls aren’t back yet. They were suppose to check out an apartment two hours ago and I still haven’t heard from them.” She whimpered out then she placed her shaking hand over her mouth trying not to hold back a cry.
“Mrs. Evans everything’s fine. We just saw them a couple of minutes before at the pizza place. Right Max?” Michael asked making Max agree with him.
“Yeah, mom. That’s right. They said that they might catch a movie ad stay over at Tess’s house.” Max cringed at the thought of lying to his mother again.
“Thank God! I was so worried. Since the left here in such a hurry to see that apartment…” Diane said taking a deep breath.
“What apartment?” Max asked confused.
“The address is on the refrigerator.” Diane pointed in the direction of the ad being held by an alien magnet on the frig door.
“No. I meant why would they be looking for an apartment?”
“You mean your sister didn’t tell you. The girls and her are moving in together temporally.” Diane brought them up to date on the events and terms that they had given the girls at the Crashdown. Michael was thinking that they were losing time listening to the details and tried to
get them out of it. Walking towards the table to where Max and his mom were sitting at, Michael snatched the ad and slid it into his jacket pocket, unnoticed.
“My wallet!” Michael said patting his pockets looking for his wallet. “I must have left it at the pizza place.”
“Okay, well go get it,” he said then turned back to his mom, “You’re sure that you’re ok mom?” Max asked concerned.
“Yeah, fine. Hurry and get Michael’s wallet before someone takes it.” She persisted, reassuring Max that she was fine. Max grabbed his black leather jacket that was placed over the couch and ran out the door. They hopped into the jeep and drove off to the Crashdown. Looking around, none of the girls were in sight. Max found a pay phone and tried reaching Liz and Maria on their cell phones, but both of their phones were turned off. Max then called Alex and told him to get Valenti and Kyle to Michael’s apartment. Alex didn’t hesitate. Hearing the tone of Max’s voice, he knew Max meant business, so he called Valenti as soon as he hanged up with Max.
“What do we do now?” Michael asked with his arm leaning over the pay phone stand.
“You got the address of that apartment, right?” Michael nodded and pulled the ad from his pocket. “Good. We’ll go there first.”
“By the time we’d get back. The others would be at my apartment…this place is not far from here.” Michael said running back to the jeep with Max.
