It's been five days since Jim Valenti had helped them cross the Arizona Stateline. He advised them to keep driving until they had passed the Nevada Stateline to ensure their safety. They only stopped for bathroom breaks, eating sandwiches and warm Snapple until it was safe for them to actually check into a motel room. Money was not an issue for them at the moment. Maria, Liz, Max and Isabel had cleaned out their savings account before graduation, while Jim made sure he gave Kyle his supply when they said their last good-byes', giving them a total of $5,283.56 The total was basically summed up by Isabel's, Maria's, and Kyle's contributions, since Liz took out money for her plane ticket to Sweden and Max took out money to buy his new car. Liz was sure that if their sudden plan on graduation wouldn't have been so...sudden, that they would have come up with more.
"We should be coming up near the Winnemucca exit, Maxwell." Michael announced as he struggled to fold the map into its original form without hitting Maria with it as she slept with her head on his lap. Max gripped the wheel and kept watch for the exit sign, which shouldn’t have been hard to miss since it was basically the same landscape as Roswell, New Mexico. The driving schedule in their VW van was pretty simple; humans drive in the morning and hybrids at night since they had unique vision. Liz had driven all day and was thankful that Max's turn was almost over soon so they could enjoy their two-day driving rest. Liz was restless. It had to be from the excitement. Max and Michael had promised them that they would be staying in a motel room for the next two nights and three days so they could stock up on needed supplies while Kyle nursed the van from the long ride. Max gazed back in his rearview mirror and saw Isabel filing her nails while Kyle slept on his basketball varsity jacket that his father had given to him before he left.
The six of them agreed to not contact anyone from Roswell until they found a safe method in doing so. Max made sure he made a mental note of it so they can discuss it later on. It was almost nine o’clock and he was afraid the stores would be closed by the time they made it to a motel, to get urgent supplies. “This is it.” Michael said tapping on Max’s shoulder and pointing to a faint dirt road. Ten minutes into the ride Liz could see a flashing neon sign that read ‘Black Rock Motel’, she just watched as the sign got closer and closer to them imagining how it would feel to sleep on a bed again. Sleep on a bed with her husband. Husband. She couldn’t help but think of a line Juliet had said while suffering a similar experience, “O, I have bought the mansion of love, but not yet possessed it. And, though I am sold, not yet enjoyed.” .” Max had only slept once with Tess, although she wished it wouldn’t have happened so they could experience it for the first time together. But that was in the past and she was glad she saved herself for Max.
“So how are we going to do this Maxwell?” Michael asked in reference to the personal information the motel manager would have to take in order for them to get a room.
“Max, why don’t you guys change your ID’s with someone else’s information. It’s not like they’re going to do a background check just to get a room.” Liz suggested, seeing both Max and Michael’s expression that that was going to be the plan. They had Isabel change the names and address on Michael and Max’s ID’s and watched as they headed to the motel’s office. Liz, Maria, and Isabel spotted a small shopping center across the street and decided to go ahead of the guys for privacy.
Black Rock’s Shopping Center
“My legs are all cramped up.” Isabel said as they entered the store.
“Well, that’s what you get for having long legs, Cindy Crawford.” Maria said as she pushed the door open for Liz.
“Oh, I am so Linda Evangelista.” Isabel corrected in an insulted toned, while Liz just laughed on their pointless debate, even though she agreed Isabel was more of a Linda Evangelista instead of a Cindy Crawford. The each got a small plastic basket and began to search the isles together.
“What’s wrong?” Maria asked Liz, noticing a worried expression on her face.
“Oh, nothing. It’s nothing.” Liz answered blushing from embarrassment from what was on her mind.
“Oh, don’t give me that. Spill. I’ve gone a whole week with only A.M. radio as entertainment, so spill it.” She demanded, stopping behind Liz as she was picking out a deodorant for herself and Max.
“Okay, but you have to promise not to laugh.” Liz said still blushing from embarrassment.
“I swear.’ Maria answered quickly as she signed a cross over her heart to commit to the promise. “Spill.”
“Well, I’m nervous.”
“Yeah, I got that much. I need the reason why.” Maria pressed annoyed by the cliffhangers Liz was leaving, but she pretty much could have assumed it had to do with Max Evans.
“Well you know how Max and I never…well you know” Liz skipped that detail seeing Maria understood what she was hinting at “I’m just nervous on how I’m going to perform.” She confessed as they walked further down the isle to where Isabel was.
“Perform? Liz, you’re not auditioning for Star Search.” Maria exclaimed in disbelief. “As long as he’s going at your speed everything would be ok. Then later on you guys can explore other aspects of…’it’.” Maria advised.
“Please tell me you’re not talking about doing ‘it’ with my brother!” Isabel questioned in disgust.
“Not you’re brother. But Liz’s husband.” Maria corrected. Isabel seemed to wince at the word, remembering her husband Jesse had begged to come with her. She knew he’d be in Boston with his new job and new life without her. She shock away the thought and continued to search through the limited options of shampoo.
“Never mind. It’s no big deal.” Liz said waving her hand trying to dismiss the awkward conversation. They just didn’t understand what she was worried about.
“No big deal? Liz, this is your first time and with your first love and husband. And if that isn’t fairytale material, I don’t know what is.” Maria explained, feeling a little envious that like Isabel, she waited until she waited until she was married. She still didn’t regret doing it with Michael though, if she had the chance to take it back, she wouldn’t. It was perfect in her eyes and it would continue to be perfect as long as she was with Michael. Liz smiled, grateful on having her best friend with her. She went to the next isle and began getting toothbrushes and other toiletries for Max and herself. She remembered seeing key items on her random visits to Max’s room and knew what brands to buy, if she missed anything, she knew he wouldn’t mind getting it. As she was rummaging through her basket, checking off her necessary list mentally, Isabel came and displayed a tasteful choice of teen-lingerie for Liz. It was a two-pieced, spaghetti strapped, sheer Viv plaid cami with a pair of cheeky boy shorts. Powder blue with a light pink edges and hand sized, pink, horizontal squares for the plaid print. “Oh! I am not wearing that.” She denied it because she was embarrassed that there was a dress code for sleeping with her husband, other than that she would have picked it out herself. She was use to sleeping with Max both fully dressed.
“Come on. It’s either this…” Isabel dangled the sheer two-piece lingerie in front of her.
“Or this.” Maria added, pulling a black leather number that looked like Julia Roberts would have worn in “Pretty Woman”.
“This looks good.” Liz said taking Isabel’s option.
“Are you sure? Cause this one comes with props.” Maria pitched as she pulled out a pair of handcuffs making Liz and Isabel bust out laughing towards the cashier to pay for their stuff. When they were about to exit the store, Liz spotted Max crossing the street with Michael and Kyle and quickly panicked. “What? What’s wrong?”
“Max is coming. I don’t want him to see it.” Liz hyperventilated.
“Here. I’ll take it.” Isabel said tucking it inside her bag. “I’ll give it to you back at the van.”
Isabel said walking out of the store.
“What took you guys so long?” Michael questioned.
“Settle down, Space Boy. Did you guys get the rooms?” Maria asked, Michael dangled a red plastic key chain with a single key hooked on the ring in front if her. “Great.” She said snatching the key from his hand, while Max handed Liz’s theirs and Kyle handed Isabel theirs. Liz gave Max a quick kiss and then allowed him to search the bags in case she missed anything.
“Is it ok?” She asked, sneaking off with another kiss.
“It’s perfect.” He said kissing her a bit more intimate, when he pulled away he noticed her flirtatious gaze and kissed her again.
“Save it for the honeymoon.” Michael commented as the rest of the group witnessed what seemed to them to be a nauseating display of affection. Both Liz and Max were slightly embarrassed, not for showing how they feel for each other publicly, but for being put on the spot.
“Listen we’re going to get something to eat later and then scout out the place, okay?” Max informed Liz as he played with the strings of his hooded sweatshirt she was wearing, that ended an inch above her knees. “We’ll be back soon.” He added as he followed Michael and Kyle into the store but being pulled back for one last kiss by Liz before he went inside.
“Ah, that is so corny.” Isabel snorted, as they crossed the street to the motel. Liz entered her room, number 16, which was kind of ironic since that’s how old she was when they first met each other.
Black Rock Motel
When Liz entered her room the first thing she noticed was a flower on the bed. She smiled and glowed on how romantic Max could be sometimes. When she locked the entrance door, she become aware of the two doors on the sidewalls assuming the rooms were joined, which was a terrific precaution, just in case something were to occur suddenly. A light knock echoed from the door to her right, she walked over to open it and found Isabel, with a smile, holding the cami and cheeky boy shorts in one and a curling iron in the other. “So let’s get you ready for the big moment.” She said as she walked into the room and opened the other door so Maria could come in.
“Alright, you get the hair I’ll do the make up.” Maria ordered as she poured out what little supply of make up she had.
“So what am I suppose to do?” Liz asked awaiting her task.
“You get to do what I have dreamed about for years, sit and watch T.V. while we pamper you. After all, you’re technically the queen in a planet far, far away.” Maria teased.
“Maria, that’s not true. The only royalty her is Princess Isabel.” Liz giggled.
“Eat your hearts out, ladies.” Isabel replied as she plugged in the curling iron in the socket below the nightstand. “Okay, enough with the small talk. Liz, go put on your awesome underwear, that was picked out by moi for the record…”
“Noted.” Liz answered as she took the lingerie to the bathroom to change. She stripped off her clothes and slipped on the lingerie. She looked down at her body and felt as bare as she looked. Her tanned tummy was completely exposed as well as her legs and upper thighs. She tried to see if she could see herself in the rectangular mirror above the sink by climbing onto the ledge of the bathtub, but ended up slipping on the cold marble as she leaned forward, scrapping the entire side of her left thigh before she fell to the cold floor. “Ah.” She yelled, getting the wind knocked out of her when she fell on her stomach. Maria and Isabel came bursting through the door with concern, finding her on the cold floor.
“Oh, my God. Liz! Are you alright?” Maria asked as both her and Isabel tried to pick her up.
“Yeah. I’m so stupid.” Liz cursed as the helped her up.
“Oh, my God! Liz, you’re bleeding.” Isabel pointed out as a trail of blood ran down her leg and onto the floor. “What were you doing?” Isabel questioned as they took her back out to the main room.
“Being an idiot that’s what I was doing.” Liz said as she sat on the bed. “I really screwed up tonight now.” Liz said taking a washcloth Maria handed her to try to consume some of the blood.
“Relax, Max can fix it when he gets here.” Maria said trying to console her as she went back to the bathroom to get Max’s sweatshirt jacket that Liz was wearing and handed it to her. “Here. Just cover up and he’ll never know.” Liz put the sweater on and tucked both sides over and under like a bathrobe. “Come on. We’ll fix the rest of you.” Maria said as she began to apply a light outline of black liner around her eyes. She let Liz put a fresh coat of Berry lip-gloss and gave her cheeks a hint of highlight with a little rose. Isabel then took charge and started to add waves to the ends of Liz’s long her with the hot curling iron.
“Lean back a little.” Isabel requested. In doing so, Liz leaned back sliding her hands back as well for support and ended up getting cut by the rose that was still lying on the bed that Max had left for her.
“Ah!” Liz screeched hold her wrist of her left hand that was bleeding as well inside her palm. “What? Am I a target or something?” Liz questioned for an explanation. Isabel and Maria just laughed on Liz’s clumsiness, it could only mean she must have been really nervous.
