Preface
‘Why aren't you taking this thing more seriously? A UFO lands…’
‘Crashed. And I am taking it seriously. I'm just not obsessing over it like you.’
‘Obsession isn't always a bad thing. Maybe there are enemy aliens on that ship.’
‘All the more reason to stay away.’
‘I liked you better when you were brooding and paranoid.’
Chapter 1
Roswell Air Force Base
“Did you find it yet?” A Major asks on of his troops.
“Sir. No, sir. We canvassed the ‘hot zone’ perimeter and still no sign.” The trooper answered.
“Put more men out in the field.” The Major ordered leaning over with both hands flat on his desk. “I want that second ship.”
“Yes sir.” The troop sounded off and saluted before marching out of the office.
“We’ll get it sir.” The Major assured the General who had been watching two dozen scientists work on the recovered ship that crashed a few nights ago.
“For your case, you better hope so.” The General warns in an icy tone.
Liz’s Room
Liz is on her bed tucked underneath her covers reminiscing on Max and their interrupted make out session. She blushed when she pictured Max and her lying entangled on her bed, embracing and caressing each other as they kiss.
‘It's really nice to be able to be close to you again without...’
‘...setting something on fire? Yeah... ...You sure you're okay?’
‘Yeah, I'm fine. See? No green in sight. We're okay.’
She turned on her back, staring at her ceiling as she patted on her stomach like a drum. She could hear the beeping of her answering machine letting her know she had an unheard message. Pouting when she remembered the message had been from Max’s mom. She had called in the middle of their so called ‘biology lesson’ and completely killed the mood for them.
‘Can we continue this after...?’
‘My Dad'll be finished working the grill in half an hour.’
‘Well, meet me back at Michael's - it's safer, anyway.’
‘What about Michael?’
‘I'll get rid of him.’
‘...'kay.’
“Hey, Liz?” Liz heard Maria call out breaking her concentration.
“Yeah, come in.” Liz called out as she sat up on her bed watching Maria come in with a suspecting facial expression. “What?”
“You tell me.” Maria answered. “Is their some particular reason why you’re all flushed?” Maria asked crossing her arm.
“Uh, Max and I were…studying.” Liz blushed as she tucked her long strands of hair behind her ears and hugged her knees.
“Studying?” Maria repeated not convinced. The sounds of nearby helicopters circling the area and bright flashes of the spotlight on them distracted Liz from continuing their best friend interrogation.
The Evans House
Meanwhile at the Evan’s household, Max and Isabel were panicking, The both if them were tricked into coming over to their parents house for a family emergency dinner but in reality the reason why their parents wanted them there was because they had discovered Isabel using her powers by a hidden camera that Diane Evans hid inside Isabel’s room. But to add insult to injury, Tess had returned from Antar with Max’s baby.
“So what are you doing here? And, why did you come back?” Max asked bitterly as he watched the helicopters circle the sky from his bedroom window.
“Kivar betrayed me. He rejected Zan as the heir. And...he was going to kill him, so I escaped.” Tess replied.
“So that was you that crashed the other night with the Air Force jet.” Max asked already assuming what her answer was going to be.
“It was trying to shoot us down. I don't know why. Typical human response, I guess. My ship was destroyed, and I woke up just as they were about to take Zan.” Tess replied with a small shrug.
“And how many people did you kill in the process?” Max asked with overwhelming anger.
“Fifteen, maybe twenty! I didn't stop to count!!” Tess answered indifferently.
“I can't believe I ever cared about you...” Max admits in disgust.
“Well, you did. And that was not a mind warp.” Tess replied with an angry smirk.
“None of that matters now. We have to get our son out of Roswell.”
Liz Room
“What is going on out there?” Liz asked curiously as she climbed out her window and watched a helicopter flying over the buildings a block away from her house.
“You think it has to do with the crash?” Maria asked sitting on one of Liz’s plastic beach chairs.
“It could be.” Liz replied with a shrug and then turned to face Maria. “So what are you going to be doing tonight?” Liz asked walking over to her window and signaling Maria to come back inside. “You and Michael doing anything?”
“Maybe. He kind of left right after your dad said he was closing the restaurant early.” Maria answered bringing her up to date on Michael’s whereabouts. “You should have seen him. The smile when your dad broke the news was total Hallmark moment. Which means either he’s at home watching a hockey game or at home drinking Snapple. ” Maria said with a giggle. “What about you? You doing anything besides Max?” Maria asked with an instigating smile.
“Maria!” Liz exclaimed in embarrassment.
“So I guess that answers my question.” Maria said getting nudged by Liz. “Okay, seeing that you’re going to be very busy sucking face with Moon Doggie, I’m heading out.” Maria said walking back to the door. “Call me later. That is if your lips haven’t fallen off by then.”
“Oh, it’s my hands I’m worried about.” Liz teased back getting a shocked expression from Maria from Liz’s unexpected kinky talk. “Kidding. I’ll call you.”
“You better.” Maria warned closing the door after her. Liz could help but let out a small chuckle and shake her head in amusement. She then glanced at her alarm clock and noticed it was almost 8 o’clock. She quickly skipped to the bathroom to freshen up before heading out to Michael’s place for some one-on-one action with Max.
Michael’s Apartment
Max and Tess enter Michael's apartment with Baby Zan and startle Michael who was sitting watching television. Michael quickly but jumps to his feet at the sight of Tess and raises his hand to blast her. “Tess, you are not here!!”
“Michael, no!” Max yells rushing forward to get between Tess and Michael.
“Maxwell, get out of the way.” Michael warns. “Whatever she told you, she's lying.”
“She has my son.” Max pleads with pleading hands opened in front of him.
“Well, get the baby out of the way.” Michael instructs him.
“No, he needs her. If you kill her, my son will die.” Max notifies him. Michael hesitates for a moment but then backs off.
“Max, what the hell's she doin' here? “ Michael asked enraged.
“It's a long story. But we need to get them out of Roswell.” Max states walking over to Michael with Tess following behind as she cradles the baby.
“Yeah. My heart bleeds.” Michael comments with obvious sarcasm.
“Nice to see you, too, Michael.” Tess snaps back.
“Hey, don't start.” Max warns as he reaches down to take the baby from her.
Outside Michael's Apartment
Liz reaches Michael’s door straightening her hair and smiles anxiously look forward to her evening with Max. But when she enters the apartment she sees Tess arguing with Michael.
“You always were the quick one, Guerin.” Tess sarcastically says before an unforeseen blast throws her hard into the adjoining room. Max and Michael are shocked as they watch Tess struggle to rise to her feet and when they look back towards the door, they see Liz standing there with her outstretched hand that is crackling with green sparks.
“Get up, bitch!” Liz demands before she blasts Tess again, knocking her back into the wall. Max quickly hands Michael the baby and rushes to stop Liz. “I'll kill you!! You're a murderer! I'll kill you!” She screams befoe Max pulls her outside.
“Welcome back.” Michael mutters to Tess with a smirk.
Outsidein the street
Liz couldn’t believe Tess was back and on top of it Max was protecting her.
‘What?? What?? So you trust her now?’
‘No, Liz, far from it. But Tess and my son are linked. Killing her would kill him.’
‘Yeah, it's convenient.’
Liz could feel the chunks trying to retract back up Liz’s throat. Seeing her brought all this rage and hatred that she has never felt in her life. Not even towards the men that shot her.
‘She betrayed all of us! She killed Alex!’
The discussion she had in Michael’s hallway replayed back and forth in her head.
‘No, she has to pay for it! Max, promise me... when this is all over, Tess will pay for what she did.’
‘I promise.’
‘Let me know when it's over.’
Liz kicked herself mentally for leaving Max there with her. Even though she knew Kyle and Michael were there with him, she could help and feel that he’d be better protected from Tess’s manipulations if she were there. And the baby. Seeing the baby just made the fact that Max slept with Tess more real. Just that thought alone stirred her stomach. “Oh God!” Liz exclaimed before regurgitating in an empty parking lot beside the flower shop. She quickly gathered her hair and leaned on the brick wall with her forearm, spitting out the taste of the last two hurls. “Uh.” Liz moaned in pain feeling her abs sore up from all the air vomiting.
“Water?” Liz heard a man, with what she assumed was a thick French accent offer. Liz quickly turned around and saw a man in his late 20’s, with a well kept five o’clock shadow, holding out a water bottle.
“Oh, no thank you.” Liz stumbled politely hiding her breath behind her hand.
“So you rather walk home wit’ your hand over your face?” He asked puzzled. “I can not carry a conversation, mon ami, wit’ you covering such a beautiful smile.” Liz couldn’t help but blush starting to walk back in the direction she was going. “Wait! My name is Elias.” He introduced himself and stuck out his hand. Liz shook his hand but he turned it and kissed the back of her hand.
“Elias? French?” She asks with a puzzled look.
“Dat it is, but I’m all Cajun, mon ami.” He answers.
“Oh, well mine’s Liz.” Liz replied still not removing her hand away from her face.
“Well, if de lady does not wish t’ drink from my water, perhaps she would like a piece of gum.” He said with a smile pulling out a piece of gum.
“Thank you.” Liz said take the gum, unwrapping it and then chewed on it. Relieved to taste something other than vomit in her mouth. “I’ve never seen you before. Are you a tourist?” Liz asked curiously.
“I’ve visited before but I see know dat I missed one site on my visits.” Elias answers with a flirty gaze.
“Uh, I’m pretty sure my boyfriend wouldn’t be to happy with me talking to a complete stranger.” Liz said blushing.
“Boyfriend, eh?” He repeated flashing a smirk. “I don’t understand how he can let such a pretty thing walk alone at night. Who knows what you might run into?” Liz started to feel like she was a hundred yards away from Michael’s place or hers. She mentally struggled with the option of either using her powers or not if Elias decided to try anything funny. If she used them she’d be saving and endangering her life in one move. Now more than ever did she wished she’d stay with Max.
“I can take care of myself.” Liz answered shaky.
“I bet you can, mon ami. Dat Max of yours sure taught ya a t’ing or two, eh?” He asked. The sound of him actually knowing Max’s name without her saying it reminded her that in Roswell, there is no such thing as a stranger with no agenda.
“How did you know his name?” Liz asked stopping dead in her tracks. “Do you know Max?”
“I don’t know Max but I know a t’ing or two about Zan, darlin’” Elias answered with a twinkle in his eyes. Liz tried to run but felt his tight grip around her waist. “Don’t do dat, chere. You would want t’ make ol’ Elias mad now would ya?” He asked.
“Who are you?” Liz asked struggling to get away.
“You forgot my name already? Tsk.Tsk.” He said moving his finger back and forth like windshield wipers. “If you can not remember Elias, try Kivar. I’m sure you won’t forget it.”
