Chapter 10

After speaking with her parents and letting them know exactly what happened between her and Chris, she thought about what her parents had suggested and what they felt was best for her. They wanted her to move to Amsterdam to live with them, but Liz wasn’t so sure that was indeed the best thing for her.

What other option did she have though? She needed to go back to New York that was a definite, she needed to pack up the stuff she didn’t take with her to Roswell and move out of Chris’s apartment for good. However, she had no job and no place to live, which didn’t leave her with many options. On one hand she could take the money she has saved and get an apartment in the city. The only problem with that scenario is that she would definitely need to move far from the area in which Chris’s apartment was since she definitely could not afford the rent for a place there.

The other option was to stay in Roswell for a little while, but that wouldn’t work either because then she would be near Max and that was not good, in any event either one presented a challenge. Mainly because she still didn’t have a job and didn’t have enough money to afford rent, food and furniture and other necessities in life. She couldn’t think about that right now though there were other things on her mind.

Liz laid down in the middle of Max’s bed just going over this mornings events. It seemed like everything went by in a flash and she didn’t have time to really absorb all that she heard or said for that matter.

She was still very upset by the way Maria acted and has been acting ever since she got back to town. There was just something that didn’t make sense to her, why would Maria still be holding a grudge against her? It was one thing to just be upset and angry for not writing or calling but to speak to her and treat her like she was a piece of shit was completely uncalled for.

Why did she defend Max so much? Obviously she said that he was there for her when she needed him, but that still doesn’t make sense as to why she is the way she is. Then Max’s father, she can only imagine how hard both Max and his mother took that. One other thing that was on Liz’s mind was Kylei’s mother, who was she and where was she for that matter? There were so many questions that she wanted answers for an unfortunately for her the only person that can give them to her was Max. She knew that for a fact but that didn’t make her want to know any less though. What did that mean? Why should she even care? Liz began to get more frustrated by the minute.

“Hi.” Serena peeked her head into her cousin’s door after putting Kylei down for her nap. She saw Liz laying across Max’s bed deep in thought, she figured the girl had a lot to deal with and needed some time but maybe she needed someone to talk to.

“Oh Serena hi!” Liz was slightly startled because she had not heard the girl enter the room.
“Sorry I didn’t mean to bother you I can just go.” Serena saw the surprised look on Liz’s face and immediately began retreating back into Kylei’s adjoining room. Liz however was surprisingly happy to see the girl.

“No it’s okay; actually I was hoping maybe we could talk for a minute.” Liz sat up on the bed and rested her back against the headboard, making room for Serena to take a seat.

“Sure, what about?” Serena took a seat beside Liz and waited to hear what the petite brunette that held the heart of her cousin wanted to discuss.

Liz wasn’t sure how to go about asking what she wanted to ask, so she just blurted it out.

“Tell me about Max.” Liz waited with bated breath for Serena’s reaction.

“About Max?” Serena asked slightly confused.

“Yes, I mean what is he like…now?” Liz ducked her head in embarrassment, she didn’t want Serena getting the wrong idea but she wanted something to help sort out her confused feelings about Max. She knows for a fact that he changed but to what extent? Was he just a playboy with a daughter? Or did he give it all up? And if he did give it all up when did it happen?

“Liz, I don’t know what to tell you except that he’s not the same person you knew three years ago. He has been through a lot but that doesn’t and will not ever excuse what he did to you.” Serena told her sincerely how she felt there was no reason to sugar coat the truth.

“Thank you, but I mean I would figure you would defend him to me, since he is your family.” Liz was a little surprised by Serena’s declaration.

“He’s my family and I love him, but that doesn’t mean that he wasn’t a complete asshole to you. He cheated and there isn’t anything that can justify that in my book.”

“Does he know you feel that way?” Liz asked thinking Serena kept this to herself.

“Yes, he knows. In fact when he called me that afternoon…the afternoon you found out and confronted him he called me and needless to say I had a few choice words for him.” Serena said seriously then looked at Liz who was fighting for control and then, they both burst out into laughter.

“I didn’t think…I just I don’t know, I figured you would try and make excuses for him or something, but I guess I was wrong.” Liz said to Serena not really knowing how complex this girl really was.

“Yeah, Max likes to call me difficult but I say I’m real, I tell it like it is. That doesn’t mean that I love him any less or look down on him for it, it was a bad judgment call on his part and he hurt you tremendously and I can understand that you will never forgive him for that.” Serena said honestly, she didn’t think that Max had a chance in hell with this girl. Hell she didn’t even know why she was here to begin with but it had to be bad if she came to Max that much she knew.

Liz listened to what Serena had to say and she was very surprised to say the least, she didn’t take Max’s side just because she was his cousin, she stayed neutral on the matter but she didn’t throw his mistakes in his face. Liz really liked this girl a lot and by the minute she felt herself growing closer to her. She felt comfortable and safe talking to her seriously knowing that she would never judge her because of her feelings.

“Did he ever say that he…that he missed me?” Liz asked shyly, she didn’t know why she needed an answer to that question but right at that moment she did. Serena however was very surprised that Liz would even care if Max missed her, but she answered in any event.

“Yes, he did. Liz I wasn’t here for what happened so I only got his side but I can tell you that he regrets it and he realized too late what he did, but to be perfectly honest with you I don’t know if he would have changed it. Maybe two years ago he would have wished it but not now, not ever.” Serena told her honestly what she knew the girl wanted to hear that didn’t make it any easier to see the emotions play across her face.

“Kylei.” Liz said without remorse or anger.

Serena turned quickly looked back up at Liz’s face and what she saw there was complete understanding, that didn’t mean she wasn’t hurt but she understood what Max’s daughter means to him. Both girls sat there staring at one another, trying to figure each other out and just simply realizing that both of them had such unique qualities you don’t find that often.

The staring match was short lived because Max entered the room moment later carrying a tray a food. He figured Liz had been upstairs all morning and Serena went up at least a half hour ago and now that the afternoon rush was settling down he would bring her something to eat.

When he opened the door he wasn’t sure what to think when he saw his cousin and Liz sitting on the bed next to one another just staring. He wasn’t sure if he should interrupt but he knew that Liz needed to eat. And when she was upset she would try and put it off as long as possible.

“Hey, I didn’t mean to interrupt but I figured Liz might be hungry.” He said while holding out the tray to Liz.

“Max I’m okay…I.” Liz protested just as he thought. He would not be deterred.

“No Liz you need to eat you’ll make yourself sick otherwise.” Max said with concern in his voice. He knew she might think he was telling her what to do, but that wasn’t it he just wanted to make sure she was okay, that nothing happened to her.

“Thank you Max.” Liz gave him a shy smile and took the tray from his hands. However when Liz placed the tray in her lap she noticed how much food was there, it surely could not be all for her. So she asked him.

“No, actually I was…I thought that maybe you would, you know like to have lunch with me.” Max said quickly and then looked down at his feet, he was a fool to even think she would want to be in the same room with him let alone have lunch with him. This was a mistake he should have never even…

“I would love that.” Liz said quickly when she saw the uncertainty in his eyes but the finishing touch was when he looked away slightly embarrassed. She knew it was hard for him but he was trying so she couldn’t be angry.

“Really?” He asked surprisingly, maybe he heard wrong or something? He thought to himself. Liz simply nodded her approval.

Serena noticed the small exchange between the two. She had never seen Max and Liz together like that. It was as if Liz knew exactly what Max was thinking when he asked the question and she was quick to reassure him that it was okay with her. And when Max asked if she really meant it, their eyes connected and he knew she was telling the truth.

That was simply amazing she thought, with just a few words they knew what the other was thinking. She decided she needed to get out of there quick before she ruined the moment they were apparently having. She quickly excused herself and before she closed the door she saw her cousin taking a step closer to approaching Liz sitting on the bed.

Max was nervous, even though he knew that Liz wanted him there that didn’t make it any less difficult. Liz saw the tentativeness in not only Max’s eyes but in his movements and she decided that she was going to have to be the one to help ease the situation.

“Why don’t we go outside and eat? It’s a pretty nice day and that way we can talk a little more privately.” Max’s head snapped up at Liz’s words. Not only did she want to have lunch with him but also she wanted to talk to him. He didn’t think about that for too long otherwise he knew that he would loose his voice. So he simply walked over to her side of the bed, lifted the tray and made his way outside the window.

“Oh I’ll be right back.” Once they were seated outside he remembered he left the baby monitor on the dresser near the door. He ran inside and retrieved it and climbed back through the window. Liz just smiled when she saw in his hands what he had gone inside to get.

“What?” Max asked her seeing a small smile play across her face.

“Nothing, it’s just I don’t know weird to see you carrying a baby monitor and just I don’t know.” She shrugged her shoulders not really sure what she was trying to say.

“So me holding a baby isn’t weird?” He said jokingly, but wanted to kick himself when he saw the look on Liz’s face.

“Liz I’m so…”

“No! Max don’t apologize, I was just thinking or rather asking myself why I found it weird for you to be carrying a baby monitor but that I don’t find it at all weird for you to be carrying a baby. That’s what’s confusing me.”

“Oh, well if it helps it’s weird for me most of the time.” He smiles at her and she nods and gives him another small smile before she begins eating her lunch.

They ate their lunch in comfortable silence and then Liz decided that she wanted to find out a little more about what Max has been up to these past few years, besides having a baby.

“So Max did you go to college at all?” Liz leaned back in her chair and waited for Max to speak.

“Yeah I went to Northwestern for about a year and then…my father had a heart attack but I didn’t make it in time. It happened so fast, one minute I get a call from my mother and I’m at the airport but by the time I got back here, he has already passed away.” Max tried to control the tears from forming in his eyes but that was useless, he still never forgave himself for not seeing his father before he died. Liz saw Max’s expression change instantly and was quickly kneeling by his side.

“Max I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to bring that up…I didn’t know that…I should have…” Liz ran a frustrated hand through her head; she really put her foot in her mouth this time she thought. Max was quick to reassure her that it was okay and he knew that she didn’t mean to bring that up.

“Liz it’s fine really. You didn’t know there was no way of you knowing. Don’t feel bad about it, I just wish that I got the chance to say goodbye. And when I look at Kylei I wish that he got to meet her even if it was just once, she’ll never know him.” He finished sadly not looking at Liz or at anything in particular.

“Yes she will Max.” Liz places her hand on Max’s knee and squeezes gently willing him to look at her and understand what she was saying.

“What are you talking about?” Max bent his head and looked into her big brown eyes and felt lost, when her hand touched his knee it was as if the world slowed down for just a moment before she started speaking. He tried hard to focus on her words.

“You and your mom won’t let his memory die Max. You can tell her all about him through stories and pictures, I know that you wish he was alive to see her, but sometimes life doesn’t work out the way we wish it did, sometimes we have to accept what is and move past it. But we never forget and I think that’s the worst part sometimes. It hurts when you remember the good and it hurts when you remember the bad, it’s a no win situation but I believe that your father is looking down on you and Kylei smiling that he raised such a great son.” Wow! Where did that come from? Liz heard herself say the words but she couldn’t believe they were coming out of her mouth.

If Liz didn’t think she believed what she said, Max was in even more shock. Liz felt that way about him, after everything? He asked himself. She was simply amazing and he was cursing himself for letting her go.

“Thank you Liz, you’re right.” They both looked into each other’s eyes and smiled. Not the shy smiles they have been tossing around all day, but a genuine smile, a smile that was adding warmth to a dark and cold place in their hearts.

Their moment was interrupted a minute later by the sound of Max’s mother yelling his mother yelling his name, “Max!”

“Mom? What’s wrong?” Both Max and Liz stood up and entered his bedroom quickly.

“It’s Maria and Michael, they are fighting and I don’t know how to stop it. It’s out of control.” Diane says somewhat out of breath because she had to run up the stairs, people were leaving the diner because of the volume of their argument.

“Let’s go.” Max runs past his mother down the stairs.

Max didn’t have to go far to hear the argument, “What the hell is wrong with you?!” He could hear Michael yell.

“Me? I am not the one yelling at the top of my lungs about some absurd thing you believe that’s not even the truth!” Max made it to the last step and saw Serena trying to separate the both of them from attacking one another.

“Would you guys at least take this outside?! Damn it!” Serena yelled at both Maria and Michael. She didn’t know how the fight started but Michael called Maria to the back room ten minutes ago and the next thing she knew dishes were hitting the floor in a loud crash. By the time both Diane and Serena had made it to the back they were in each other’s faces yelling.

Max quickly removed Serena from between Maria and Michael then grabbed Michael’s arm walking him towards the back door. Once they were outside Max turned to a fuming Michael asking what the problem was.

“I don’t believe her! I’m busting my ass working two jobs, hell I was working three up until a few weeks ago and she’s just fucking around on me!” Max was confused as to what exactly Michael was talking about.

“Michael, you are not making any kind of sense, you wanna tell me what happened?” Max tried to say as calmly as possible not wanting to upset Michael any further.

“Max, come on man you have to know. I see the way she has been looking at you and today that argument she had with Liz and with you. There is something there and I don’t fucking believe her!” Michael was enraged once again just thinking about it. After Max asked Maria to put in an order for his and Liz’s lunch she flew off the handle.

After Max had gone upstairs Maria was fuming, so when Michael called her to the back to find out what was wrong she just blew up at him, saying to him that she just couldn’t believe Max was going to have lunch with her. That’s when Michael saw it, plain as day the jealously was written all over her face. He exploded at that point.

Max of course was completely in the dark he had no idea what Michael was talking about. Michael saw the clueless expression on his friends face and needed to tell him what was going on.

“Shit!” Max remembered he left Kylei upstairs and he didn’t have the baby monitor with him and he knows for a fact that his mother followed him downstairs. He was in such a rush to get into his room that he left it outside.

“What’s wrong?” Michael asked concerned.

“Kylei I left her upstairs. I’ll be right back.” Max said placing his hands on Michael’s shoulders hoping that he would understand. Michael understood Max had priorities. He was always being pulled in so many directions he wondered how he just being twenty years old kept all the responsibilities from making him crazy.

“That’s fine Maxwell I’m done for the day in a few hours, I know you’re closing early for tomorrow so I’ll catch up with you later.” Max turned and looked at Michael and then asking him if he was sure that he wanted to wait to talk to him.

“I’m sure Maxwell, we’ll talk later.” Max left him outside to allow Michael time to get his temper down. When Max entered the back room he saw Maria sitting on the bottom step with both Serena and his mother nowhere to be found. He could only assume that they went back out onto the dining area.

“Max…” He didn’t have time for this right now; he needed to get to his daughter.

“Maria, later I have to get Kylei I left her upstairs alone.” He walked past her taking two steps at a time but halted at Maria’s words.

“Alone? I thought Liz was upstairs?” Maria asked somewhat confused, she knew Liz didn’t come downstairs with everyone else so she couldn’t figure out what Max was talking about.

“Yeah…you’re right Maria but still I can’t just leave Liz with her.” He continued up the stairs. Hoping that Liz wouldn’t be upset that he left her there. He didn’t want her thinking that she had to watch Kylei or anything. He was treading on thin ice and he was afraid that one wrong move and Liz would be gone for good.

Max reached his open bedroom door to find the room empty. Where was she? He thought when he found his bedroom empty. He quickly crossed his room and leaned out the window to grab the monitor and that’s when he heard her.

It was Liz. He turned and as quietly as possible made his way over to his daughters bedroom. What he saw there made his heart constrict, his breathing hitch and his love grow.

Liz was holding Kylei in her arms gently rocking her on Max’s mother’s rocking chair.

“How are you doing sweetheart? I know you probably miss your daddy but he’ll be up here soon.” Liz whispered to the tiny girl in her arms. She reveled in how warm and soft she felt. Liz ran her hands through her curly dark hair and thought it’s softer than anything she ever touched in her life.

“Do you need your diaper changed? Is that why you were all fussy? Well let’s see I’ve only ever done this a few times so forgive me if I do a terrible job.” Liz says jokingly while lifting Kylei from her shoulder and bringing her over to the changing table attached to her crib.

Kylei held onto Liz’s neck and nuzzled some of her long brown hair in her tiny fist. Liz then placed Kylei down and began unsnapping the onesy and removing the diaper. Luckily Liz didn’t need to look too far for some wipes or a diaper. Five minutes later Liz had a triumphant smile on her face and leaned in over Kylei just watching her smile back at her. Something inside of Liz changed at that very moment, she wasn’t quite sure what it was but she felt it when she saw Kylei smile back brightly and when her eyes lit up and look up at Liz.

“You look so much like your daddy you know that? So beautiful, and maybe we can keep this part a secret, but it’s a good thing you don’t have his ears. Not that they aren’t cute or anything but well they are a bit on the larger side, just make sure you don’t point that out to him because he’s very sensitive about them.” Liz leaned in and placed a kiss on Kylei forehead before reaching out to carry the little girl back to the rocking chair.

Liz loved the feel of having Kylei in her arms; she now understands when people say it’s on of the best feelings in the world, at that moment she had a newfound understanding for what Serena was talking about. She wouldn’t give up this for anything in the world either, not even the love of her life.

Max stood and watched silently and realized that the picture of Liz with his daughter was one that would be permanently imprinted on his mind. They both looked so beautiful, so perfect he wished at that moment for the first time ever that Liz were Kylei’s mother.

The harsh reality though was that Liz was not Kylei’s mother; Liz wouldn’t be sticking around either because she had no obligation. Max knew however that Liz would never leave her own child. He must have made a noise because a second later Liz acknowledged that he was in the room.

“Max!” Liz looked up when she heard a small creak come from the doorway in Kylei’s room; she was surprised to see Max standing there. He looked amazing she thought.

“Ah Liz, I’m sorry I left her up here, it’s just that everything happened so quickly I didn’t even have a change to…” Max quickly tried to apologize but Liz wouldn’t hear of it.

“It’s okay Max, Kylei and I were just getting to know one another.” Liz tried to say without her voice giving away the fact that she was nervous as hell and hoped that Max did not overhear what she was saying to Kylei.

“Right. Well I can take over from here.” Max approached Liz and that’s when Kylei noticed her father was in the room for the first time. She clapped her hands together and reached out to him.

“Hey pumpkin! Did you miss me like I missed you?” Max smiled and lifted his daughter in his arms. He then lifted her in the air and looked up into her beautiful greenish amber eyes and placed a kiss on the tip of her nose. She always giggles when he does that.

Liz sat back and watched the exchange and wanted more than anything to be a part of it, but she had no right to want that. What was she thinking? It’s Max, the one that broke your heart, the one that didn’t give a shit about your feelings, the one that has a beautiful daughter who he would do anything for, the one that you still love no matter how hard you try to deny it.

This situation was getting more complicated by the second. Liz didn’t know what the hell to do, she couldn’t stop herself. She needed to and she would after tomorrow. Liz decided that she would leave and move back to New York, or so she thought.

Little did Liz know that Max had plans of his own, he was going to tell Liz the truth about everything and if she decided she didn’t want to be a part of his life then he could live with that, but he didn’t want any lies or secrets to come between them again.

Chapter 11

It was closing time and Michael was headed out but stopped as soon as Maria called out to him.

“What do you want Maria? I don’t think there is anything left to say.” Michael let out an agitated sigh. He was done with her; she was in love with his best friend. For him it was over.

“Michael let’s just talk about this okay?” Maria pleaded with him. She was terrified of losing Michael, but not for the right reasons.

“Talk about what? That you’re in love with him!” Michael raised his voice slightly. He couldn’t help it. He didn’t want the argument to erupt the way it had that afternoon. Mainly because it was getting late and he knew the Diane and Liz were going to be coming downstairs soon to begin setting up for the party tomorrow.

“Michael, I’m not in love with him.” Maria tried to defend herself but Michael knew what she was trying to do. She was trying to play on his feelings for her, but it wouldn’t work this time.

“Would you just stop fucking lying to me already! I’m not a kid Maria. I can see just like I know everyone else can that you are in love with Max, stop denying it. It’s pointless you are jealous that he still loves Liz.” Michael said with a finality that left no room for Maria to have a leg to stand on.

“I would never be jealous of her!” Maria shouted out. It wasn’t that she was in denial. No, Maria was jealous of Liz had always been she just didn’t know she was being so transparent. Liz first noticed Max their first year of high school. She just transferred and he had helped her find her first class, from that point on Liz was completely taken by him.

Maria however had been after Max Evans for years; they both lived in Roswell all their lives. They weren’t close friends not until the last couple of years, even though she was dating Michael. Mainly because Max was dating Liz and Maria could not stand it. She had been flirting with Max, but he never took the bait. Michael and Max had been friends for quite awhile at that point and Maria had a plan. The plan involved trying to make Max jealous.

Apparently that didn’t work because Max didn’t blink an eye. The only problem with Maria’s plan was that she did fall in love with Michael. However, when Max’s father died and when tragedy struck her mother a few months ago they grew closer and Maria thought that maybe Max had feelings for her. In fact she wasn’t so sure that he didn’t, they never discussed it but maybe it was time.

“Come off it Maria, there is nothing for us to talk about. Liz was supposed to be your best friend and all this time you were just waiting on the sidelines for something to happen between them. You probably expected Max to cheat on her and you would be the great friend that he needed, while I was busting my ass to get us out of here!” Michael couldn’t hold back not only the rage but also the pain. He loved Maria, she was quirky, funny and beautiful, perfect or so he thought. All this time he was being played and that hurt more than any words could express.

“That is not what was going on Michael, I love you.” Maria pleaded with him. She knew that if he walked out that door he wouldn’t be coming back for her. She was hurt, she messed everything up but more than anything she was pissed off at Liz. It’s all her fault! If she hadn’t come back none of this would be happening, she thought to herself.

“Right! Maria the only person you love is yourself!” He turned to walk out the front doors but stopped and without turning around told her goodbye.

Maria watched him leave. She willed her feet to move, she thought about running after him but she knew Michael better than that. There was nothing to save. The only thing she had left to do was tell Max how she felt and hope that he felt the same way.

Meanwhile, upstairs Diane and Liz were making their way downstairs to begin preparing the diner for the party. Serena and Max offered to help but Diane insisted that she and Liz could get everything done themselves. The reason why Diane insisted that Liz join her, besides the fact that Liz said she wanted to help, was because she wanted to talk to the girl. She hadn’t seen her in a few years and she genuinely missed her.

When Max was having a game, her, Philip and Liz would go together. Diane missed that; she missed a lot of things. She wasn’t sure how long Liz would be staying; she knew that when she left it would break her sons’ heart. She wished there was something she could do, even though she knows he brought it upon himself, he was still her son and knows that he is not the same person he was after Liz left.

They needed to go into the living room and get a few bags to bring downstairs. Liz was glad she could do something to help. After all Diane was allowing her to stay in her house no questions asked. Liz missed Diane more than she thought she would. She spent several diners at the Evans’ and she enjoyed Christmas and Thanksgiving with them as well. Liz’s parents would go out of town a lot leaving Liz alone for weeks at a time, the Evans’ never thought twice about asking Liz to join them. Not out of pity but because they enjoyed her company, they hoped that things would progress with Liz and their son.

“So what time is the party?” Liz asked while they made it into the back room of the diner.

“Well we are going to have a big breakfast and then a few of Serena’s friends called and said that they would be making the drive up here tomorrow, so they are going to spend a few hours together, so I would say around five.” Diane told Liz, in fact she wondered if Liz would want to join the girls tomorrow. She would have to remember to ask Serena later.

They entered the main dining area and saw that both Maria and Michael were gone. So they went about putting up some of the decorations while making small talk.

“So what kinds of things does Serena like?” Liz asked while assisting Diane in moving the tables around to allow room for people to stand and dance.

“Well Serena is a complex girl. She doesn’t like fancy things at all, she’s simple and sometimes that’s more difficult.” Diane said with a small laugh knowing how complicated that sounded.

“Yeah I get that from her, but she’s really great! I like her a lot. I wish I had known her before.” Liz says wondering if things would have turned out differently if she had a friend like Serena around instead of Maria. She had only met Serena a few times in the past but they never really talked about anything. Liz was usually being dragged off with Maria somewhere, for some reason Maria and Serena never got along. Liz didn’t know why though. She couldn’t think about that, she just focused on helping Diane.

“Yes, Max and her have this special bond. I swear it gets me every time I see them together, they look liked identical twins, well except for the eye color and that is just amazing to me.” Diane said in a somewhat awed voice. Liz had also acknowledged that fact the first time she saw Serena years ago and now after seeing her after all that time she was blown away by the resemblance once again.

“Yeah. So I think I’ll head over to the mall tomorrow morning and get something for her, you know?”

”Liz you don’t have to.”

“I know but I want to.” Liz smiled and they finished setting up continuing casual conversation but Liz needed to say one thing before moving on.

“Diane?”

“Yes honey?” Diane looked up from the counter she was currently opening the banners to be hung up.

“I’m sorry to hear about Mr. Evans. He was a great man and a really great father.” Liz gave her a teary smile; one that Diane returned with a ‘thank you’ just a teary.

“Serena, I don’t know what to do.” Max was pacing his bedroom floor running his hands through his hair in frustration.

“Max you want to tell me what the hell you are talking about?” Serena knew her cousin needed to get something off his chest and she knew it had everything to do with Liz.

“I’m going to tell her everything Sere, she deserves it. But what if she leaves anyway? I don’t know if I can take it again.” He looked into his cousin’s eyes begging her to help him sort this out.

Serena stood and wrapped her arms around Max for comfort. He was going to give himself a heart attack if he didn’t stop worrying about everything.

“Max, you need to tell her the truth, she deserves that. You just need to be prepared for her questions, her anger and most importantly you have to prepare yourself to watch her walk out the door and never come back. I’m sorry to have to say that, but it’s the truth. I wish with all my heart I could do something, but it’s up to Liz. I told you before, it’s her choice you have no say in anything.” She pulled away and looked in his eyes, hoping that he would look at the big picture.

Max did and he knew what she was saying was right. As much as he wanted to fight it and say to himself that he could tell Liz and she wouldn’t leave, that was not reality. Reality is that he could tell her and she could end up even more angry or hurt all because of him…again.

“I know Sere, thank you.” Max smiled at his cousin then engulfed her in another tight hug and placed a kiss on her cheek.

“You need to get some sleep birthday girl.” Max said teasingly. Serena pulled out of the embrace and walked towards the door, but needed to say one more thing.

“Max?”

“Yeah?”

“Fight for her Max, fight harder than you think you possibly can.” Serena said and gave him one last smile before closing the door behind her.

Max knew she was right and he had every intention of fighting for Liz. He may not deserve it but he needed to know how she really felt, he just hoped to God that she didn’t hate him.

Diane and Liz were just about finished and Liz still had no idea what to get Serena, she would have to ask Max tonight. She still wasn’t sure about the sleeping arrangements, she assumed she would be sleeping in Maria’s room, but the thought of that made her physically ill, so maybe she would just sleep on the couch downstairs. Liz didn’t think about it for too long, she wouldn’t allow herself to.

Max was taking one last look at Kylei before he lay down in bed to watch some television until Liz and his mother came back upstairs. He already set up a space for himself on the floor in Kylei’s room so that Liz could take his bed. Maria’s room was free, however he figured that she might come home anytime now since she and Michael are fighting. He did not want Liz to have to deal with Maria in the middle of the night. A few minutes later he heard a knock on his window. He rolled his eyes and let out a heavy sigh, knowing exactly who it was. It’s now or never, he thought to himself.

“Maria what are you doing here?” He opens the window to let her in. He can tell she was crying and as angry he was with her, he just couldn’t turn away.

“Michael broke up with me.” She was crying at this point and Max just grabbed her quickly wrapping his arms around her. He had a heart after all.

“Maria, what happened?” Max still wasn’t sure what Michael and Maria were arguing about.

“It doesn’t matter it’s over.” She pulled out of Max’s embrace and wiped her eyes.

“Are you sure? I mean you and Michael do fight a lot.” Max tried to sound as positive as he could.

“I’m sure.” Maria said with all traces of hurt removed from her voice. Max wasn’t sure what else needed to be said. Kylei came to the rescue, she started to cry loudly and Max excused himself and made his way into his daughter’s room.

“What’s wrong with my baby huh? Did you have a nightmare?” Max leaned over the crib and cradled his daughter against his chest. He hadn’t noticed that Maria followed him until he turned around and she was standing in front of him. Maria reached out a hand and ran it through Kylei’s hair. They stood there in silence for a few minutes waiting for Kylei to calm down.

In the room across the hall Serena woke up at the first cry from Kylei, it was the loudest by far she wanted to make sure everything was okay. She made her way out of bed and out the door, but what she saw made her stop dead in her tracks. She was so shocked that she didn’t even realize that both Diane and Liz were making their way down the hallway towards her.

Maria was standing silently watching Max with Kylei. She loved him; there was no denying it. Now was the time to tell him, Maria thought. Taking a deep breath she began.

“Max?” Max turned his head away from his daughter to look at Maria, who was at that point standing mere inches from his face.

“Yes?”

“There’s something I need to tell you.”

”Okay what do you have to tell me?” Max was not really in the mood for one of her cryptic messages.

“I love you.” And before Max had a chance to react her lips came into contact with his.

Serena saw the kiss. She couldn’t believe it! She quickly crossed the hall and entered Max’s room. Never realizing that now Liz and Diane had made it down the hall to witness the conversation that was about to take place. Both Liz and Diane were confused as to what was going on, so they stood back and just waited.

“What the fuck are you doing Maria?!” Max shouted and pushed her away. He glared at her and then turned to enter his bedroom and slamming the door shut. Since Max’s back was facing the door, neither of them saw Serena enter the room. When Max left, Maria lifted her head when she heard someone clear their throat.

“What the hell are you doing? You selfish bitch!” Serena was enraged. Here her cousin was trying to win back the love of his life and here Maria was trying to destroy everything. She would not let this slide under the carpet that was certain.

”Look Serena this is none of your business.” Maria tried to defend her actions assuming that Serena not only heard but saw everything that happened.

“You love him?!” Serena shouted out. Both Diane and Liz heard this as well as Max. Liz stiffened at the words she couldn’t believe it. It just couldn’t be true. Diane was not all that surprised, she had a really good feeling that’s how Maria felt about Max. Max simply groaned and was still trying to settle Kylei down; she was fine until he raised his voice at Maria. He decided to just let Serena handle this; he just had too much to deal with at that point.

“I can’t believe it you turned your back on your best friend because what? You thought he was going to fall for you?! He trusted you with his secrets, with his insecurities and you played him on it. I think you should leave before I kick your ass!” Serena was fuming, she couldn’t believe it. She knew Maria was jealous of Liz but to stoop so low as to use their breakup against him and his feelings that was just beyond anything Serena could comprehend another person doing.

“I live here!” Maria yelled back. Who the hell did she think she was?

“Not anymore!” Everyone’s head snapped back towards the doorway where Diane stood behind Liz who was still in complete shock over what was happening. Diane’s voice left no room for any arguments.

When Max heard his mother’s voice, he knew it was bad. If his mother was there so was Liz. He just prayed Liz was still downstairs, and if not maybe she didn’t hear anything. Yeah right Max!

He picked Kylei up and opened his bedroom door and entered his daughter’s room to find, his mother, Serena, Maria and finally Liz. He looked at her and he knew she saw and heard everything. She was pale and when she lifted her eyes to meet his. He was met with a teary pained expression right before she turned and ran down the hallway.

Chapter 12

After Liz left Max acted quickly and placed Kylei in his mother’s arms and ran down the hall after her. He couldn’t let her leave not now, not when he was ready to tell her everything.

By the time Max made it downstairs Liz was already gone. He ran through the diner and saw the front doors were already unlocked. Pushing through them he ran outside and scanned the area for some sign of her. He turned his head to the right and caught sight of her entering the park across the street.

Liz was having a really hard time trying to sort out her feelings. Her best friend lied to her all this time! In addition to the fact was that Maria was in love with Max?! She just didn’t think she could take much more of the lies.

Max finally caught up with her when she fell to her knees crying harshly. He stopped behind her and wanted to comfort her so bad, but wasn’t so sure it would be welcomed. Therefore he kneeled down beside her.

“Liz, I…” Max wanted to explain what she saw in the house. He wanted to explain that he had no feelings for Maria, only friendship and at this point he wasn’t so sure he even felt that for her.

“No! I don’t want to hear you’re sorry! I’m tired of it! I deserve more than that!” Liz stood up quickly and walked over to the picnic table that was in front of her. Max knew this was it, the moment of truth, he was expecting a little more time to prepare but he wasn’t going to back down. He stood and made his way over to her. She had already taken a seat on top of the table. He decided it would be best to take a seat on the opposite side.

“You’re right you do deserve more than that Liz.” She didn’t say anything so Max was going to start at the beginning but Liz beat him to it.

“Why?! Why Max?” She didn’t try to fight back the tears; she wanted him to know how bad she was hurting. How she had been hurting all this time.

“Why?” Max wasn’t sure what question he was supposed to be answering, but that of course just made her angrier. Liz slid off the table and turned around to face him to ask him what she has needed to hear for years.

“Why did you do it to me? Now I’m just stuck! I can’t move on and I need to.” Her tears where streaming steadily while she waited for him to answer. She hoped with all her heart that he did.

Move on? He didn’t want her to move on, not without him. Max knew this conversation could either make or break any future he dreamed about having with Liz. He took a deep breath and started…at the beginning.

“On my fifteen birthday Michael and I went to the carnival they were having in town that week. While we were there, we met up with a few girls and decided to hang out with them. They were seniors and although we never really hung out before, I was on the basketball team and I knew them since they were cheerleaders. We got on a few rides together and after about an hour most of the girls left except for two. One that Michael was hanging all over and one that was hanging all over me. I dated a few girls but it was just casual nothing serious up until that point.” He chanced a look at Liz and saw that she was listening intently so he pressed on.

“Anyway since Michael and I couldn’t drive the two girls asked us if we wanted rides home, which we of course took. Well we didn’t go straight home; they took us out to a secluded part of the park near Michael’s house. Michael quickly hopped out of the car with Stacey, leaving me with Michelle.” Liz knew exactly who Max was talking about; they were the most popular girls of West Roswell High. She was afraid to hear the rest; she wasn’t so sure she wanted to hear the rest especially the way it was going so far.

Max’s voice hitched a little in preparation for telling Liz the next part. He couldn’t look at her and see the disgust he knew would be there.

“We sat in the car for a few minutes and then she crawled over the seat into the back and asked that I join her. I hesitated at first. Then I figured we were just going to make out so I did. I really wish I hadn’t. We made out for a few minutes and then she began to undress and well…that was my first time and I don’t even remember how it happened. I knew I didn’t want to but then I did, I was so confused. After we were done, she got dressed and got out the car to get Michael and Stacey. She never said another word to me the rest of the night or for the whole school year for that matter. Of course when she wanted to sleep with me she would acknowledge me, but I felt sick every time I saw her and got angry. Angry with myself for letting it get that far, I should have stopped it but I didn’t. But I was angry with her, she knew it was my first time but she didn’t care, she just used me and went on her way.”

“I got home that night and took the longest shower of my life. She had it planned, I mean what kind of a girl carries condoms right? After that night though I vowed to never let another girl ever get the chance to put me in that position. Not that I didn’t consent or anything but to take advantage of me. I used that one incident to rule my lifestyle. I slept with girls Liz…more than I’d like to admit to and I didn’t care. I was numb I didn’t feel anything when I was with them but…” He wasn’t sure if she still wanted to hear what he had to say; so far she has been silent just watching him. A few tears managed to escape the corners of his eyes and he quickly wiped them up.

The tears did not go unnoticed by Liz. Although they were in the dark there was a lamppost right above them, so she could see his face perfectly. When he confessed where it all began from she couldn’t help but feel badly for him. She knew that he was hurt long ago, before her and it stayed with him. Some people react differently to situations they are put in, this was Max’s reaction to his first sexual experience. Liz was beginning to understand Max’s frame of mind when he was doing what he was doing, but she needed to know more. She still needed to know why he did it to her. When he stopped mid sentence Liz reached out her hand and placed it on top of his hand and gave it a gentle squeeze, silently asking him to finish.

When Liz reached out her hand to touch his he knew what she wanted and he was grateful that she was giving him time to get it all out without interrupting.

“But when I met you I tried to stay away from you, that’s why I didn’t ask you out until the summer before our junior year. I tried so hard…I didn’t set out to hurt you. Ultimately that’s exactly what I did. I knew I shouldn’t have been with you but I was selfish.” Liz needed to ask him something that had been on her mind from the day it all happened.

“You say you didn’t set out to hurt me, and I believe that but you knew how I felt about you right?” Liz asked knowing the answer but needed confirmation.

“Yes.” Max nodded and waited for her next question.

“And did you not care?” Her voice laced with the pain flowing through her veins at the moment.

“Liz I don’t know what to say to you that’s not going to sound bad.” Max’s tears were escaping, he was losing her and he knew it. His voice was ragged and thick with emotions.

“Trust me Max, what you did was bad. So some kind of an explanation would be better than what I was left with, which was nothing.” Liz said honestly trying to let him know that she wasn’t going to get upset with him for saying it. This is after all what she wanted.

“I know but I’m just ashamed of myself for the way I handled everything with you.” He looked into her eyes willing her to see the truth, the humility he felt.

“Just please tell me. I need to know what I did wrong.” Liz finished in a whispered voice, trying to control the sobs escaping past her lips.

“No! Liz you didn’t do anything wrong. You did everything right and that scared the shit out of me. I wasn’t used to girls treating me that way. They knew my reputation and that’s what they were with me for. Not because they liked me for me because they wanted to sleep with me. And I let them I played their game, and I lost big time.” Max finished as he stood and walked around the table to sit next to Liz. Liz turned and faced Max, her tears were falling freely and Max quickly reached out and wiped them away only to have them replaced with fresh ones. His heart ached for all the pain he has caused her, but there was more to say.

“You are so perfect, I would never change a thing about you. I would have damaged you, ruined you for anyone else. I did it because deep down I knew that I would fuck everything up that’s why I didn’t try to keep you. That’s a poor excuse but that’s the best explanation I have…I’m sorry if it’s not enough.” Max looked into her eyes hoping to see that she at least understood what he was trying to say.

“Did…did you care about me at all? Or was that faked?” Liz asked in a hurt voice, she hoped that she wasn’t completely wrong about her feelings for him back then.

“Yes, you meant a lot to me that’s why…I couldn’t sleep with you Liz. That was something that I wanted you to save for someone that would treasure you and treat you with respect…with all the things I didn’t do for you.”

“I didn’t love you Liz. I had no idea what it meant to love another person with your whole heart unconditionally. I mean I know how my parents love me but I…Liz it’s so hard to explain.” He finished with a heavy sigh. It was almost impossible to explain some of his feelings. Liz however wanted him to explain it better, she wanted to understand how the man that is seated beside her can love his daughter the way she knows he does but wasn’t able to love her at all.

“Can you try? Try for me?” Liz pleaded softly. Max simply nodded and tried to give her what she wanted and hoped that it would make some type of sense after it left his mouth.

“Okay you want to know why I didn’t love you, right?” He asked her because that is essentially what it all came down to. This is the moment that will define the rest of his life.

“Yes.”

“When I found out I was going to be a father, it was as if my heart starting beating for the very first time in my life. I was terrified don’t get me wrong but I knew that being responsible for another human being was something I didn’t get a second chance with. If I messed up, there would be no do over. At that moment I realized there was someone more important than my feelings for you or myself for that matter. After you left I stopped everything Liz. I didn’t date anyone…I didn’t sleep with anyone after you left.”

“See when I saw your face that day in the hallway and the day you left town after graduation I knew I was upset and hurt, but I couldn’t understand why. Not until I found out about Kylei. She wasn’t planned at all but that didn’t mean that I didn’t love her the second I knew about her.” He looked up into Liz’s eyes to say the next part.

“That’s when I realized that I let go of the best person in my life up until that point. The strongest girl I knew. So when Kylei was born, minutes after she was born I held her and I cried like a baby, but I made her a promise that I have been trying to keep from that day forward. I promised my baby girl that I would love her with all my heart until the day I die and I thanked God at that moment for blessing me with her. She was beautiful and healthy and she was mine to care for. I loved her before she was even born and that love grows by the second.” Liz was in complete tears once again. She knew Max’s words were true and she wished that he had felt that way about her…even if it was just a little.

“You deserve that kind of love Liz. You should hold out for it, it’s the greatest feeling in the world. And you’ll never know how sorry I was that I didn’t realize what I had sooner. See because when I held Kylei in my arms and she wrapped her tiny fist around my finger and I looked into her eyes, I felt it. I felt this overwhelming emotion course through my body and at first I thought it was the first time I ever felt it…but when I thought about it more I realized I was wrong.” Max said hoping that Liz would understand what he was saying.

Liz couldn’t believe it! She swallowed thickly and blinked her eyes rapidly this was not happening. He wasn’t going to say what she thought he was going to say…was he? A part of her hoped that he didn’t but a bigger part of her wished for it for so long she held her breath and waited.

She wasn’t going to make it easy, he figured as much so he proceeded to tell her.

“I remember the first day I saw you. I thought you were so beautiful and when you smiled I couldn’t help but smile back. When we were together I have some of my best memories from that experience. I would hold you and you would lean up on your tiptoes and kiss me and I would get that feeling. I never knew what it was; I could never put a word to it. When you would look at me, it was as if I was the only person on the planet even if we were in a crowded room, I would get that feeling. Not until Kylei did I know what that feeling was.” Max stopped and looked right into Liz’s eyes; this was going to be hard. He just hoped that she didn’t slap him.

“It was love Liz. I loved you and I didn’t even know it. Not until I lost you. I’m so sorry that I couldn’t be what you needed. I’m sorry that I didn’t treasure you and your love that you gave so freely to me. Most of all I’m sorry that I hurt you in the worst way and I wish I could take away all your pain. I will carry it with me forever the pain I have caused you.” Max was in complete tears as was Liz at his declaration. He needed to get out of there, she was going to leave him he knew it.

“Max?” Liz called out to him, she was in total shock but when he got up and started walking away she needed to ask him one last thing.

“Do you still love me Max? I mean…do you love me now?” She stood up and slowly approached him. Liz wanted to see his face; she needed to see it in his eyes.

“Yes. I never stopped. I love you more then you would believe.” Max answered without hesitation. Liz sucked in a ragged breath before breaking down and ran into Max’s arms.

Max was not expecting that reaction from Liz. Nevertheless he held her tightly while she cried. He couldn’t help the sobs that took over. He then placed a kiss on her temple.

Liz had so many emotions running through her body, relief, sadness but most of all love. He still loved her he never stopped. She didn’t know where they went from there but she had decisions to make and she needed time. Liz decided that could wait because at that moment she wanted to do nothing more than to just be held by him.

When she felt Max kiss her temple she pulled away slightly and saw the tears streaming across his face, she reached up and brushed them away then ran her fingers over his lips.

Then she did something she had been dying to do since the night before. She got on her tiptoes and replaced her fingers with her lips, sealing them with Max’s.

Chapter 13

Max was in a complete daze when her lips touched his, he wasn’t sure if it was real or not. He wrapped his arms around Liz’s waist and deepened the kiss. He couldn’t help it, one taste of her and Max was lost.

Liz felt Max’s arms come around her and she knew she needed to stop but she couldn’t. He felt so perfect and the moment was so right. Surprisingly though Max was the first one to pull away. Liz was confused by his actions but quickly understood that they ran out of the house with several people wondering where the hell they were.

“Liz.” Max looked down into her eyes wanting to say something but not really sure what.

“Please don’t say anything Max. I just…I need to think okay?” Liz pleaded with him because at that moment she was torn. She knew she shouldn’t have kissed him, but the need outweighed the consequences she now faced.

Max simply nodded understanding that she needed time. Before he knew what he was doing, Max reached out his hand for her to grab. Without hesitation Liz slipped her hand in Max’s and they walked back to the diner in silence.

“Oh thank God!” Diane rushed over and threw her arms around Liz when they entered the living room. She was worried when Liz ran out the door, knowing how hurt she must have been.

“Are you okay Liz?” Serena asked concerned, she knew that Liz witnessed it all and just hoped that her and Max had some time to talk.

“Yes, I’m fine thank you.” Liz smiled reassuringly. She couldn’t believe how concerned they were for her.

“Do you think it would be okay if I took a shower?” Liz asked hesitantly. Max quickly told her it would be perfectly fine and watched as she made her way upstairs.

“Max is she really okay?” Serena asked her cousin whose facial expression she couldn’t quite read at that point.

“Yeah, she’s fine. She just needs time.” Diane knew that the two of them needed to talk so she excused herself and handed Max the baby monitor before she headed off to bed.

“What happened?” Serena asked instantly once they were alone.

“We talked, and I told her just about everything.” Max said as he plopped onto the couch with a heavy sigh.

“And how did she take it?” Serena said taking a seat beside her very distraught cousin. She knew they didn’t have that much time to talk.

“As well as I could have ever hoped for.” Max said with a hint of a smile forming on his lips.

“What are you not telling me?” Serena eyed him suspiciously when she saw the smile.

“We kissed.”

“You kissed?!”

“Shh, I don’t want her to know I told you.” Max said as he placed his hands over his cousin’s mouth.

“Okay I need details.” Serena whispers out while turning to face Max.

“I just told her everything. I told her I loved her that I always loved her and then she asked me if I still loved her.”

“And of course you said yes.” Serena said with a big smile on her face.

“Yes.”

“And then.”

“And then she kissed me.”

“Oh Max, I’m so happy for you.” Serena said throwing her arms around Max.

“It’s not that simple Sere, she’s confused. Liz may have kissed me, but I don’t think she really thought about it.” Max said sadly. He knew he was right, Liz may have wanted to kiss him at that moment, but now that she did, it complicated things.

“Max, don’t be so sure of yourself. Liz seems to be a pretty determined person and if she didn’t want to she wouldn’t have.” Serena said that because she honestly believed it. They both sat in silence for a few more minutes before Max excused himself to go upstairs and get ready for bed.

Liz went upstairs after leaving everyone in the living room. She knew that Serena would probably try and find out what happened between her and Max. Oddly enough it didn’t bother Liz one bit that Serena knew what happened between them, in fact she was somewhat relieved. She would be able to talk to Serena about it, which she really thought she needed, and try to figure things out.

Liz was still not sure how the sleeping arrangements were but decided to take a long hot shower and think things through a little.

As the watered sprayed down her back, helping to relieve a few stressed muscles, Liz thought about Max’s confession. A part of her was so angry that he just used all those girls, but when she thought about it, they were using him just as much if not more. She wondered what it felt like for him being with them and knowing that they didn’t care about him.

It hurt her more than she wanted to admit, because she knew that if she and Max would have been together he would have known the difference because she loved him. That had to make a difference right? She thought to herself. It would have been special. He wouldn’t have felt used. Maybe she was kidding herself; it probably wouldn’t have made a difference to him.

Liz was utterly confused and frustrated. She didn’t know what to do. When Max confessed his love, the wall she put up crumbled quickly. Too quickly for Liz, she wanted to be stronger she wanted to fight all those feelings from coming back. But he was so sincere he meant every single word and she knew it. That’s what was making it difficult for her to move on.

Despite everything that he did, she loved him. And that terrified her because she knew that she wouldn’t be able to walk away if he asked her to stay. Deep down inside though Liz knew that he would never ask her to stay; he didn’t think he had any right to ask. Surprisingly though, Liz found herself wishing he would ask her.

Liz let out a long sigh and turned off the shower. It was time to stop hiding in the bathroom, she thought. After dressing in her pajamas she made her way out into Max’s bedroom, to find it empty.

She put her stuff back into her suitcase and then she heard him enter the room behind her.

“Hey.” Max shifted nervously from one foot to the other.

“Hey. I just…where….” Liz was so unsure of herself at that point. Max picked up on it and answered her quickly. He let her know that he would be in Kylei’s room for tonight and that Liz could have his bed.

“Thank you.” Liz smiled gratefully.

“No problem. So I’ll see you in the morning.” Max said and the turned to walk into Kylei’s room but Liz’s voice stopped him.

“Goodnight Max.” He looked up at her and saw the small smile play on her lips.

“Goodnight Liz.” Max smiled back just as shyly before he closed the door.
The next morning Diane was bustling around the kitchen making breakfast big enough for a small army. After getting dressed Liz made her way across the bathroom into Kylei’s room.

She stopped dead in her tracks of the sight before her. Max was standing shirtless holding his now completely dressed daughter against his chest. Kylei noticed Liz right away and threw her a big smile, to which Liz returned.

“Morning.” Liz said moving into the room to stand in front of both Max and Kylei.

“Morning Liz.” Max said a little surprised to see Liz standing in the room, but happy at the same time. Max thought she looked so beautiful; her cheeks were still flush from sleep. Kylei began to squirm a little in her daddy’s arms; she wanted to touch Liz again.

“Hey sweetheart.” Liz said while running her hand down Kylei’s cheek. Kylei wanted to be held by Liz so she reached out her arms and leaned over.

“Whoa! Okay I see somebody doesn’t want their daddy anymore.” Max said jokingly and handed his daughter over to Liz’s welcoming arms.

“Aww she still loves her daddy she just saw someone prettier to look at.” Liz said while smiling brightly at Max and holding Kylei against her chest.

“Yeah well I’m glad to know she got my brains then.” Liz blushed at Max’s words.

“But not my ears right Liz?” Max continued to mess with Liz as he crossed the room to put his shirt on. Meanwhile Liz was embarrassed that Max had actually heard her yesterday.

“Ah, well you know Max I only speak the truth.” Liz said confidently that she would be able to wipe the smirk off his face.

“Right, I’ll have to remember that one Liz, so you’re ready to get some breakfast?” He asked opening Kylei’s bedroom door.

“Max?” Liz said walking behind him.

“Yeah?”

“Do you think you could take me to the mall? I wanted to get Serena a present and well I’m not so sure what to get her.” Liz ducked her head shyly, not really knowing if she should have asked Max to take her anywhere. Maybe he was mad at her for kissing him and then not wanting to talk about it.

Max saw her insecurity and quickly reassured her he would love to take her after breakfast.

“Happy Birthday!” Max yells as soon as entered the kitchen and saw Serena setting the table.

“Damn Max you scared the shit out of me!” Serena turns around just in time to be embarrassed by her cousin.

“Hey watch your language in front of my very impressionable daughter.” Max covered Kylei’s ears and a smile plastered itself across his face. Serena simply rolled her eyes knowing that Max was kidding around with her.

“Happy Birthday Serena.” Liz smiles and places an arm around Serena.

“Thanks guys.”

“Oh Liz before I forget a few of my friends are driving down and should be here in an hour or so and we were going to just hang out until later. Did you want to join us?” Serena asked hoping that Liz would say no. She wanted Liz to stay with Max and maybe they would get a chance to talk privately again.

“Thanks but I’m going to be…Max is going to take me out in a little while and I…well…” Liz was at a loss for words, she didn’t want Serena thinking she didn’t want to hang out with her, but she really wanted to get her a present.

“That’s fine Liz don’t even worry about it. I’m sure whatever you guys have to do is more important than listening to me and my friends talk about our high school days.” Serena gave Liz a reassuring smile before turning back to setting the table.

A few minutes later there was a knock on the front door and Max got up to answer it.

“Look who the cat dragged in.” Max says while entering the kitchen once again only to be followed by Kyle.

“Kyle! I’m so glad you could make it.” Diane said while standing up to greet him. Kyle quickly wrapped his one arm around Diane. He fell in love with her instantly and had wished that he had a mother like her.

“Hello everyone.” Kyle said after he pulled out of the small embrace, and caught sight of Serena. He pulled the flowers he had behind his back and presented them to Serena, leaned over and placed a kiss on her cheek and wished her happy birthday.

“Thank you Kyle.” They smiled at one another and for a moment forgetting that there were other people watching the entire exchange. Until Max cleared his throat, breaking the moment.

“Kyle I’d like you to meet Liz.” Max said while watching the exchange as Kyle extended his hand and Liz simply raised hers for a quick handshake.

“Nice to meet you Kyle.”

“You too.” Kyle said and then took a look to the little person sitting next to Liz.

“Oh! There is my namesake!” Kyle said and rushed over to Kylei’s side. He lifted her out of her highchair. Max of course groaned and rolled his eyes.

“Kyle, she just ate I wouldn’t twirl her if I were you and how many times do we have to go over this? She is not your namesake, if she’s anyone’s she is Liz’s.” Max quickly shut his mouth and began shoving a piece of toast in his mouth. He didn’t look up from his plate; he couldn’t believe he had just said that aloud.

Liz was watching the entire exchange between Kyle and Max and found it quite amusing. They seemed like really good friends from what she could tell. She was watching Max’s facial expressions and smiling to herself about how cute he looked when he would pretend to get all flustered with Kyle. But when he said that Kylei was her namesake she was confused so she had to ask, even though it looked like Max did not want to have that conversation.

“What do you mean?” Liz asked and everyone grew quite. Kyle wasn’t sure what was going on, but he had put two and two together and figured out that Liz was actually Elizabeth Parker the girl Max had told him all about.

“It was nothing Liz, really. Let’s just finish up breakfast so we can head out.” Max said and then swallowed his orange juice. Hoping that she would let it drop. That of course was wishful thinking on Max’s part.

“No tell me.” Liz wanted to know what she was missing, because obviously everyone else in the room knew exactly what Max was talking about. Max cleared his throat and looked at her.

“Well her full name is Kylei Elizabeth Evans, I…I named her after you.” Max said and excused himself from the table. Liz sat there just staring with wide eyes and an open mouth at Max’s confession.

She couldn’t believe it he named his daughter after her, but why? Liz found herself with more questions than answers and the only way to get to the bottom of it all was to find out who exactly Kylei’s mother was. As of yet she had yet to show up, there was more to the story and she knew that before she left she needed to know the rest.

Liz excused herself from the table in search of Max with a new goal. She wanted to know if Max had stopped sleeping with anyone after she left, how did he end up with a baby?

Chapter 14

Liz went in search for Max but could not find him anywhere so she headed back to the kitchen.

“Liz?” Serena was exiting the kitchen just as Liz was entering and decided she needed to have a quick talk with her.

“Yeah?” Liz said slightly distracted.

“Come with me outside for a second, my friends will be here in a few minutes.” Serena motioned for Liz to follow her, which she did. They sat outside on the front porch and after a few minutes Serena began.

“Liz, I know you and Max talked a little last night. Remember when I told you that Max was a different person?”

“Yes.”

“Okay, then you know Max has been through a lot these past few years and I know you probably have a lot more questions so I just ask that you let him tell you the rest. Don’t ask him to tell you, I believe he will when he’s ready but you don’t know everything and so I just ask that you give him that. I know you probably don’t think he deserves it…”

“No! I think he does Serena. It’s just that…God! This is so confusing for me.” Liz jumped up quickly and ran her hands through her hair in frustration.

“I know what I need to do, but then I talk to him and everything changes. It’s like I want to help him but I shouldn’t! I should be angry! I should hate him! But I don’t.” Liz sighed heavily.

“Liz, it’s okay. You have been given a lot of information and not a lot of time to absorb it no one blames you. I just…I hate to ask you this but are you going to leave?” Serena wanted to know not for herself but for Max. She knew that when Liz decided to leave she would leave a hole in his life and she just wanted to be prepared for the fallout.

“I wish I knew, but I don’t. I’m sorry.” Liz finished sadly as she heard a car pull up to the house.

After Serena left Liz entered the house to find Kyle in the living room with Kylei, they were on the floor playing.

“Hey Liz.”

“Hi Kyle, do you know where Max is? We were supposed to go to the store?” Liz said while looking down at Kylei who met her gaze and crawled over to Liz’s feet.

Liz leaned down and picked her up and placed a kiss on her forehead. She hoisted the little girl on her hip waiting for Kyle’s response.

“Yeah, he’s actually in the kitchen.” Liz nodded her thanks, turned and headed for the kitchen.

“Hi.” Liz said as she entered the kitchen. Max turned around when he heard Liz’s voice. A smile formed quickly on his lips when he saw her carrying Kylei.

“You ready to go Liz?”

“Yes I am.” Liz knew he didn’t want to talk about it, she just hoped that he would soon, at least before tomorrow.

They went to the mall and searched for over an hour for something Liz could buy Serena, but to no avail.

“Liz trust me, I had a hard enough time shopping and she’s my cousin. Seriously just get what you think she would like and she’ll love it.” Max tried to reassure Liz. He was pushing Kylei in her stroller and waited for Liz to make a decision.

“I have no idea and I’m getting hungry.” Liz pouted and Max thought she looked adorable and he wanted nothing more than to kiss her lips again. Max shook his head trying to clear his thoughts.

“Okay we’ll go get something to eat and then you can decide.” Max said and turned the stroller towards the food court.

After a quick lunch they went back in search of a gift for Serena.

“Oh! How about books? Does she like books?”

“Yes she likes books Liz.”

“How about poems?”

“Yes actually she enjoys them, in fact when she would write me letters she would always include a short poem for me. I have them all saved somewhere.” Max said while trying to remember where he had put them.

“Okay great! I have a book that I love filled with poems that I think she would enjoy!” Liz said as she skipped towards the bookstore. Max sighed as he watched her actually skip into the bookstore with a smile on her face. He wished she were that happy about being with him. He stood there in awe of her beauty. Max loved her long chocolate brown hair that felt so soft and looked like a curtain of silk against her back, her perfect creamy flawless complexion, her big bright brown eyes and adorable smile. Max loved her more each day and yet his heart broke at the same time knowing that she would be leaving tomorrow. He knew that he was running out of time, and he was afraid that no matter what he said it wouldn’t be enough to keep her there.

A few minutes later Liz exited the store with a bag that contained the book she purchased for Serena. Liz was glad that she thought of it before it was too late.

“So I guess we should head back huh?” Liz didn’t want to go just yet, she wanted to spend more time with Max and Kylei but she couldn’t say that.

“Yeah.” Max said flatly. Their time was getting cut short and he didn’t like it but he couldn’t say anything.

The car ride was pretty silent except for Kylei who was talking to herself or rather babbling to herself. Max and Liz had looked at one another at one point and started laughing and once they did Kylei simply got louder.

They were passing a park and Kylei must have recognized it because she began banging her palm against the glass window and kicking her feet.

“What’s wrong pumpkin, you see the park? You wanna go to the park?” Kylei nodded to her daddy and then yelled something that sounded like a ‘ya’ but it could have been any word really.

“Do you mind?” Max turned to Liz hesitantly.

“No! That should be fun.” Liz said leaning over her seat to look at Kylei and reached out her hands and rubbed her chubby legs while talking to her.

“You like the park don’t you sweetie? Yeah your daddy must spoil you doesn’t he?” Liz said teasingly as she settled back in her seat.

“Oh yeah daddy spoils her that’s for damn sure.” Max said as he raised his head proudly in the air.

They made it to the park and took a seat under one of the many trees. Max laid out a blanket he always carried in his Jeep. Kylei sat up playing with one of her toys sitting between her father’s legs. Liz was seated next to him against the tree.

“So Max tell me what does a girl have to do to have you spoil them?” Liz said while leaning her head back against the tree trunk, not realizing until the words left her mouth how flirtatious that question sounded.

Max was a little shocked by her obvious flirting but he answered the question nonetheless.

“Let’s see there is a list of things, where should I start?” Max tapped his finger against his chin pretending to ponder the question.

“First of all you have to have brown hair, straight or curly.” He said while running his hands through his daughter’s hair.

“And?” Liz said smiling and wanting to hear the rest.

“You have to have a beautiful smile.” Max did not chance a look at Liz; he was afraid of what he would see there. She might get upset with the next two parts.

“Uh huh.”

“Having the name Elizabeth in your name doesn’t hurt at all, in fact it pushes you to the top of the list.” Liz ducked her head. Her cheeks were burning. Max was being so sweet and she couldn’t help the way she was feeling. She did love him that much she knew but what happens next? That’s the part that scared her, that’s what kept her at arms length. However the next statement, made Liz speechless.

“What else?”

Max took a deep breath, she wanted to hear the rest and so he would give it to her.

“You have to love me unconditionally.” He leaned over and placed a kiss on top of his daughter’s head. Kylei crawled over Max’s legs and into Liz’s lap. Liz blinked once, twice and then looked down at Kylei in her lap and smiled.

Liz then turned and looked at Max. She saw the uncertainty swimming in his eyes and she wished she could give him something, tell him something to take that look away but she couldn’t, she was afraid of what that would mean. Would he hurt her again? Would he break her heart for good? Or would he love her for the rest of her life? Would he make up for everything or just fall short?

“Liz?” Max’s voice broke her from her thoughts.

“Y-yeah?”

“Her name is Cassandra.”

“W-who?” Liz asked confused, she was still trying to figure out her feelings.

“Kylei’s mother, her name is Cassandra.” Max was ready to tell her. He wanted Liz to know why he slept with her and how he ended up being a father at twenty. But most importantly he wanted Liz to know the reason why he named his daughter after her.

Chapter 15

Liz froze at Max’s words. She didn’t know what to say so she just listened. Kylei had settled against Liz and her eyes were growing heavy. Liz quickly covered Kylei with her blanky and waited with baited breath for Max to continue.

Max took a deep breath once again preparing himself to tell the rest of his story.

“I met her about two years ago, she moved here with her family from Arizona. She came into the diner one day I was home from school and she asked me out. I said no of course I was not looking to date anyone. While I was home for Christmas she had come to the diner daily and we just talked, we were friends I guess. I really didn’t know much about her though, so I’m not sure you could even call us that. Anyway, I went back to school and didn’t see her until…my dad’s funeral.” Max took in a ragged breath not wanting to break down again. Liz heard the hitch in his voice and quickly reached out her hand and placed it on his arm, trying to give him some reassurance.

“The day of the funeral everyone one came back to the house and I just couldn’t be around anyone, I needed to get away. So I went outside to get some air, a few minutes later I looked up and saw Cassandra walking towards me. She asked me if I was okay and of course I wasn’t. At that moment I needed to get away, so I asked her if she wanted to go for a drive.”

“We did, I drove out of town it was already getting late and I decided to head back home. She only lived a few blocks away so I offered to drive her home and she accepted. She invited me in and one thing led to another. We were very careless and I didn’t realize what we did until it was over and I felt sick, because I knew there was a very good chance that she could have gotten pregnant.” Max stopped and waited to see if Liz had any questions or if she gave any indication that she wanted him to stop.

Liz didn’t know what to say, she felt like she needed to say something but what?

“Did you want her to keep the baby?” Liz asked the first question that popped into her mind. She just wondered if maybe Max was scared and didn’t want Cassandra to keep the baby.

“Yes! The day she told me I wasn’t all that surprised again because the possibility that she would end up pregnant was great, but the moment she told me I was scared and ecstatic all at the same time. I wanted the baby so much. If something good could come out of my father’s death then I’m glad it was Kylei.” Max smiled sadly.

“I’m glad to hear that, but Max where is Cassandra? Did something happen to her…did she…?” Liz stopped herself, what if something happened during labor or something awful like that? Liz groaned inwardly she really stuck her foot in her…

“She left.” Max whispered and turned away. He was trying to keep his tears at bay. He wasn’t crying for Cassandra he was crying for his daughter. She would never know her mother.

“What did you say?” Liz thought she must have heard him wrong. Surely she heard him wrong, right?

“She left one month after Kylei was born.”

“Oh God! Max I’m so sorry. I didn’t know…but why?”

“She didn’t want her Liz.”

“How is that possible Max? How can anyone not want her?” Liz looked down at the precious girl in her arms and could never see anyone not wanting to be a part of her life, especially her own mother.

“I don’t know Liz. I tried to get her to stay I tried to make her understand what she was doing but she didn’t care. She said that she only had Kylei because of me, because of how happy I was about the pregnancy. I still don’t understand, but she told me she had nothing to give her…”

“She can love her!” Liz was so upset and tears sprang to her eyes. Not only for Kylei but for Max as well, that must have been horrible to deal with. When Liz yelled out in anger Max turned and pulled Liz into his arms trying to comfort her.

“What did she say when she left? I mean…God…I just don’t understand.” Liz was so confused how could anyone just leave their child?

“She said she never loved her that she couldn’t, she didn’t want her. She told me that she was leaving and I told her to never come back. Then she told me that’s the one thing she could give the both of us and she left.” Max was in tears at that point. Liz tried to comfort him as well as herself while in his arms.

“I’m sorry Max…I’m so sorry you had to go through that. But you’re better off and so is Kylei.” Liz said with a new found determination. Max pulled away and swiped the tears from his eyes and cheeks and then quickly brushed the tears from Liz’s eyes.

“What are you talking about?”

“You deserve better Max and so does Kylei. She deserves a mother that will love her and be there for her no matter what. Not some low life who cares more about themselves than anyone else! I’m glad she left!” Liz was so furious at that point.

“Liz calm down.” Max ran a hand through her hair.

“No Max, it’s just so wrong you know? I mean there are people out their dying to have a baby and that…that bitch just walks away like her child is nothing and like you’re nothing! I mean…I just I can’t even comprehend it right now.” Max framed her face with his hands and looked at her closely. Her eyes were filled with such sadness and anger he didn’t think she would react that way. He wanted to kiss her for caring so much about him and his daughter when she didn’t have to. But her question stopped him.

“Did you love her?” Liz looked straight into Max’s eyes wanting to be sure that what she did next would not be in vain.

“No, Liz I never loved her. I told you I only ever loved you.” Max said honestly never looking away from her and then he saw it in her eyes for the first time in three years he saw her walls come down.

Liz stopped fighting Max at that moment, she wanted to try she wanted to see what could happen if she just let it. She closed her eyes and hoped that Max understood.

Max saw her close her eyes, his heart started pounding and then he closed his eyes and covered her mouth with his lips. Liz responded immediately opening her mouth to allow him greater access, which Max took greedily. He slid his tongue into her mouth and felt hers slide across his; he quickly deepened the kiss tilting her head slightly.

Liz reveled in the feel of his warm tongue sliding against hers. She missed kissing him. He was definitely the best kisser ever without a doubt she finally decided. A small moan escaped past her lips and Max quickly swallowed it with his mouth letting out a soft moan of his own.

They broke away minutes later panting for air, but never breaking eye contact. Max wasn’t sure if he should say something or if he should wait until Liz spoke.

Liz saw the question in Max’s eyes and quickly spoke up this time. It was her turn after all she thought.

“We just need to take it slow and I still have to go back to New York, but I’d like to try again Max…if you want to.” Liz was sure he would say that he did, but what if he didn’t?

“I’d love that Liz. Thank you.” Max whispered against her lips capturing them in another sweet kiss. A kiss that was much less demanding then the one a few minutes ago, but just as passionate.

“Max?” Liz asked hesitantly after pulling away for air.

“Yeah?” Max was waiting for this question all day and now that she was going to ask it he wasn’t so sure how to answer.

“Why did you name her after me? I mean why does she carry my name?” Liz looked away not because she didn’t want to know the answer but because she was afraid that she would cave even quicker when she heard it.

“Before she was born, Cassandra never wanted to talk about names she said we’ll know when she’s born. So we waited. When she was born, Cassandra didn’t even want to hold her. And I asked her what she wanted to name her and she said she was leaving that decision up to me. I had already thought about what I’d like her name to be but I needed a middle name. So when I held my daughter in my arms for the first time, I made a few promises to her and then I thought about all the things I wished for her to have. I also thought about the kind of person I’d like her to become. And I couldn’t think of one other person in this world I would want my daughter to be like than you. She’s her own person but when I made the decision I thought about what kind of person I would like her to grow up to be. I wished for her to be smart, confident, have an amazing heart and be beautiful inside and out…just like you. So the decision was easy the only person it could ever be was you.” Max told her honestly what he felt when held his daughter and knew that she was his forever.

Liz drew in a ragged breath and she fought hard to hold back her tears at Max’s confession. She still couldn’t believe it. After everything, after years he still thought of her, in fact so much so that he gave his daughter, who she knew he loved more than anything on this earth, her name. Liz sat and stared at Max in awe, he was different but still the same. He always had the potential to be more than he let on, but he never tried. Liz had a feeling though he wouldn’t let the opportunity slip by a second time. She knew he had told her everything. The only thing left to do was for her to accept it and move forward from there. Max saw the emotions still etched across her face and decided to just leave the topic alone for now. He had told her everything he needed to, now it was up to her to decide what she wanted. He just hoped that what she wanted included him and Kylei.

“Let’s get this one up and home otherwise she’ll be up all night and I have an early day tomorrow.” Max said as he stood taking Kylei from Liz’s lap and then helping Liz up. They walked hand in hand back to the car.

That is exactly how they walked through the front doors of the diner; a few minutes later and that did not go unnoticed by Diane or Serena. Both women looked at one another and smiled. Things were definitely looking up they both thought.

“So Serena, what’s your birthday wish?” Serena smiled as Kyle slid into the booth across from her.

“I don’t know you got any ideas?” Serena flirted openly with Kyle. After all she liked him. And the fact that her cousin was friends with him gave him lots of extra points in her book.

“Yes I do, how about we go out to dinner tomorrow?” Kyle asked confidently. He didn’t have many girlfriends in the past but Serena made him feel confident probably because she didn’t bullshit you, if she didn’t like you she made it known. Kyle didn’t know that little fact about her until a few minutes ago when Maria came in to get her stuff from the house.

Kyle was confused of course, but Serena and Diane filled him in. Kyle hoped that Michael would show up, he probably needed someone to talk to, he thought.

“Sounds great! What time?” Serena asked with a smile on her face.

“How about seven?”

“Seven it is!”

“What’s seven?” Max asked as he approached them.

“Our date.” Serena said smiling up at her cousin.

“You two are going out? Wow! That’s great news!” Max said. He was dancing inside not for his cousin, yes he was happy for her, but he was happy for himself. He was bursting with complete joy.

“Oh did she fall asleep?” Serena looked up at Kylei rubbing her eyes with her fists and yawning softly.

“Yeah, we stopped at the park and while we were talking she fell asleep in Liz’s arms.” Max turned and looked down at Liz and they shared a smile.

“Let me hold her?” Serena reached out for Kylei and Max quickly placed her in his cousin’s arms.

“Hey beautiful, did you have fun with daddy and Liz? I bet you did!” Serena says, taking note that Kylei seemed to be pretty comfortable with her now, which she was very happy about.

“Everyone is showing up so let’s bring out the food.” Diane walked in from the back room.

While Serena sat with Kylei, everyone else went into the back room and started bringing all the food out.

“Hey Maxwell.” Michael said as he entered the back room where Max was walking up the stairs with Kylei to change her diaper some time later.

“Michael, I’m glad you came. Come with me upstairs I wanted to talk to you.” Max didn’t turn back around he just waited for Michael to follow him.

Michael walked into Kylei’s bedroom behind Max. He stood next to Kylei’s changing table and waited for Max to start.

“So how are you doing?” Max asked after he placed a fresh diaper on his daughter and finished dressing her.

“I’m okay you know, just trying to deal with it all.” Michael shrugged his shoulders he didn’t have that much time to deal with things but he was trying to just figure out what he needed to do with his life at this point.

Max lifted his daughter in the air to blow raspberries on her stomach. Both Kylei and Michael laughed. When Kylei noticed Michael she reached out for him to hold her.

“Hey there beautiful, if only you were a little older, your daddy would be in big trouble!” Michael says as he places a kiss on Kylei’s cheek and she immediately places a kiss on his cheek and wraps her arms around his neck.

“Ha! She’s never leaving the house…ever!” Max says and walks across to his bedroom. Michael hoists Kylei closer to his chest and enters Max’s room taking a seat on his bed.

“I don’t know she’s a beauty now, she might not be able to attend kindergarten.” Michael knew how protective Max was about his daughter and her growing up. He could only imagine what it would be like to have a child. Michael always thought that when the time came it would be with Maria, but now knows that was just a joke.

“Please I was panicking about that the other day, it’s terrible. I want her to grow up but really slow, that’s so terrible to say.” Max said shaking his head.

“I know Maxwell don’t worry, she loves you and she will always love you that’s the great thing.” Michael finished sadly. Max picked up on Michael’s tone quickly.

“I’m sorry Michael I still can’t believe it.” Max said taking a seat on his windowstill. Michael placed Kylei on the floor to play with her toys.

“I know talk about left field. I had no idea at all. I mean all this time she was pretending? That’s just so…” Michael knew what he wanted to say but he wouldn’t start cursing in front of Kylei.

“Right. I had no idea at all. I mean we became friends after her mom died and I knew that you were working so hard for you guys to move, if I even thought for a second that she had ulterior motives I would have backed off.” Max felt bad; he thought that maybe he led Maria on or gave her some kind of false hope for something that never existed.

“Maxwell don’t blame yourself for being so irresistible.” Michael tried to make light of a difficult situation for himself. Truth was he was hurting and he didn’t know how to make the pain stop.

“Stop it man! I just feel like crap for it even happening in the first place.” Max was blaming himself if only he…

“Maxwell, it wasn’t your fault. I should have seen it and I didn’t. It sucks but she’s just not worth it.” Seeing the distraught look on Max’s face was enough for Michael to evaluate the situation a little better. He blamed himself. Max blamed himself. However neither of them caused the situation. It was all Maria. She chose to use people that genuinely cared about her against one another in some sick and twisted game.

“I just…”

“Hey guys!” Liz was looking all over for Max downstairs at the party and he hadn’t returned so she was wondering where he went. She entered Max’s bedroom when she heard Max’s voice.

“Oh hi Liz!” Michael got up from the bed and wrapped his arms around the petite girl. Michael knew that Liz held a piece of his best friends’ heart and hoped that everything worked out for them in the long run.

“Hi, I’m sorry did I interrupt something?” Liz felt a little uncomfortable because apparently based on the faces she had seen when she entered the room, Michael and Max were in a pretty heavy conversation.

“No not at all, we were almost done anyway.” Michael spoke up quickly not wanting to alienate Liz in anyway. Kylei had looked up from her toys in time to see Liz enter the room and she quickly dropped down on her hands to crawl over to Liz’s feet and pulled herself up.

“Hey cutie!” Liz bent down and placed a kiss on Kylei’s head. Kylei quickly wrapped her arms around Liz’s neck and kissed her cheek.

“Aww, I swear I’m getting spoiled by you.” Liz said and immediately picked Kylei up and crossed the room to take a seat on Max’s bed.

“Liz are you okay?” Max asked a little concerned he could tell something was bothering Liz.

“Yeah…it’s just that I was downstairs and well I felt out of place you know?” Liz said shyly not looking up from Kylei. Max quickly made his way over to her side and Michael just watched in awe of the events taking place in front of him.

“Liz it’s okay. You’ll get to know them besides there isn’t anyone that wouldn’t just love you when they got to know you.” Max smiled at Liz who lifted her head slightly to regard Max giving him a shy smile. Liz then realized they were not alone and she wanted to talk Michael.

“Max do you think you could give me a minute with Michael?” Max turned to Michael then to Liz and nodded his head then bent and lifted his daughter to bring her back downstairs. But before Max stood up completely he placed a kiss on Liz’s forehead and gave her a small smile.

“Thanks Maxwell.” Michael patted Max on the back on his way out. He knew his friend had a lot on his plate, but he still made time for him and Michael appreciated it.

“So Liz…”

“Michael, I just want to say that I’m sorry that you ended up in the middle of this whole thing. You are and have been such a great friend to Max for years and you don’t deserve what happened.”

“Liz it’s not your fault.”

“It is Michael.” Liz stood up determined to not let another person blame themselves for something she should have stopped.

“What are you talking about?” Michael was confused.

“She was my best friend. I should have paid better attention. I mean she made comments about Max but I always thought it was normal girl gossip. I mean a lot of girls talked about Max so I never thought too much about it. I should have known better, I mean how stupid could I be?!” Liz ran a frustrated hand through her hair.

“Liz you’re not stupid. And you know Maria was supposed to be your best friend but all along she had a plan and she didn’t care about your feelings, Max’s or mine for that matter. Don’t come down on yourself for her twisted mind.”

“Michael why didn’t I know?! I should have known it was my job!” Liz was practically in tears and Michael quickly crossed the room and wrapped his arms around her.

“Liz please, I need to just get past her but I don’t want you or Max blaming yourself for anything. And I realize now that I can’t blame myself. I was working my ass off for the both of us and she was just using me. That hurts more than I want to admit to but I need to just move on and start again, just not here.” Liz pulled away and wiped her tears.

“You’re leaving?”

“Yeah, I’m telling Max in a little while, that’s why I needed to come here and tell him. I need to find out who I am without her.” Liz simply nodded. She was in a similar situation, except she knew who she was without Max but she had no idea who she was with him.

“You okay?” Michael asked wiping away Liz’s tear stained face.

“Yeah. You?”

“I’ll be okay.” Michael smiled and Liz moved to leave the room.

“Liz?”

“I know he has probably already told you, but he loves you. I know he loves his daughter and she holds his entire heart, but his heart is big Liz and there is and has always been a place for you. It’s a place that will always be there, whether you’re together or not. I know it’s hard to forgive and forget and I know it’s not that simple, but just know he has come along way, for only two people.”

Liz nodded at Michael before walking out into the hallway. Taking with her the knowledge that Max had truly taken what he did years ago to heart and hearing from Michael that he is who he is because of his determination to prove himself to two people, is daughter and her.

The party was over hours later; Max hadn’t given Serena her present yet he was waiting until they were alone. He knew what her reaction would be and he knew she wouldn’t want everyone looking at her like a crazy person for crying. Serena didn’t cry not in public anyway and not with witnesses.

After Max and his mother set up Maria’s room for Liz he headed down the hall to Serena’s room. He had left Liz in her room with Kylei. He couldn’t wipe the smile off his face for anything.

“Hey, can I come in?”

“Sure of course I was expecting you.” Serena looked up from the book she was reading. It was the poem book Liz had given her.

“You like it?” Max motions towards the book in Serena’s lap.

“Yes, it’s great!”

“I’m glad, Liz was so worried about what to get you.” Max took a seat at the foot of her bed.

“I love it! So how can I help you?” She said with a smile on her face.

“I wanted to give you your present.” He held out a long box wrapped in silver paper, Serena grabbed it and placed it in her lap knowing her cousin had something to say.

“I though and searched for something to get you and well I know that you don’t get to visit that often and I know you have missed out on Kylei growing up so I decided to actually make your gift.” Max smiled shyly and then motioned for Serena to open it up.

“Max.” Tears sprang to Serena’s eyes when she saw the photo album. She opened it slowly and touched each page as if it was made out of the finest crystal.

“Do you like it?” Max asked.

“I…I love it Max thank you.” She leaned over and engulfed him in a big hug.

“Well you know I take like a thousand pictures of her and my mom takes just as many I figured I’d make copies and put them in order from birth until now and I left a few pages for you to fill with the pictures that I will send to you.” Max smiled at his teary eyed cousin.

“It’s perfect.” Serena was so happy she missed so much and she hated it but she was so thankful for Max and Diane letting her be such a big part of Kylei’s life. Serena wiped her eyes now that the moment had passed and she wanted details.

“Alright I knew you couldn’t hold out any longer. It’s been like what four hours?” Max laughed and rose from the bed and closed her bedroom door then took a seat back on the bed.

“We went to the mall to get your present, and then Kylei wanted to go to the park. So we were there for a few minutes and Liz started to flirt with me. Like openly flirt and well I flirted back.”

“Yeah?” Serena inched up closer to the edge of the bed not wanting to miss anything.

“Then I told her about Cassandra.”

“You did?” Serena was a little surprised that he told her already. She knew he would eventually, but obviously Max wanted to make a serious go with Liz and he knew the only way to do that was to be completely honest up front.

“Yes, and then Liz got upset and angry.”

“Angry okay but why was she upset?”

“When I told her that Cassandra left, Liz just flipped out. I mean she was furious, probably more so than me. She went on about how she could just leave her daughter. And how anyone could just leave Kylei like she was nothing, how she couldn’t love her. Then…then she said that Kylei and I deserved better.”

“You do Max I told you that.”

“I know but it’s different coming from Liz. She’s my biggest critic right now Sere.” Max said not wanting to hurt his cousin’s feelings but wanting her to understand what Liz means to him.

“I know Max, you don’t have to apologize to me.” Serena says and covers his hand with hers wanting him to finish.

“Then she asked me if I loved her.”

“Who?”

“Cassandra.”

“Oh okay and of course you said no.”

“Right and then….” Max sighed and smiled as he reflected back on that moment.

“Damn it Max! Stop holding out!” Serena said jokingly with him.

“We kissed and then she told me she wanted to try.”

“Really?” Max just nodded. Serena lunged at him knocking the both of them off the bed.

“I’m so happy for you Max.”

“Thank you. But she’s going back to New York.”

“What?! She can’t!” Serena was confused why would Liz go back?

“She had a life before this Sere, she has things she needs to take care of, but we haven’t really talked about it yet but we will.” Max said leaving no room for any arguments.

“Good I’m glad. Now I need my beauty sleep because I have a date tomorrow.”

“I know I hope things work out, Kyle is a really good guy.”

“Me too Max. Goodnight.”

“Night Sere.”

Max closed the door behind him and walked down the hall with a heavy heart knowing that tomorrow Liz would be leaving he just hoped it wasn’t for too long.

Chapter 16

Liz kept herself entertained with Kylei who was currently holding herself up with the nightstand and babbling something to Liz. Liz just smiled down at the little girl; she didn’t have to think about whether or not she loved her, because she already did.

It was so easy. If not just for the fact that she was a part of Max, but because she was just the most precious baby she had ever seen. Liz was serious, she wanted to see where things went with Max, but they needed to take it slowly.

Liz needed that because she found herself falling too quickly and she didn’t want to repeat the same mistakes as last time. In addition to that she needed to go back to New York tomorrow. She decided she wouldn’t stay any longer than necessary because after all if her and Max were going to try then she couldn’t be clear across the country. She would just gather her belongings from Chris’s apartment and clear out her bank account say goodbye to her friends and then she would head back to Roswell.

A few minutes later Kylei fell on her behind and then crawled over to the pile of pillows on the floor in the corner of the room. Liz decided to join her. Liz walked over and Kylei watched her just smiling.

Liz lay down on her back on top of the pillows and Kylei crawled up Liz and sat down on her stomach. Liz propped her legs up so Kylei could lay elevated on Liz’s legs. “Hey sweetie, you like playing don’t you? I bet you’re not even tired huh?” Liz lifted Kylei’s shirt a little and tickled the little girl.

Kylei immediately burst into laughter she was very ticklish. “Oh you like that!” Liz leaned up and placed Kylei on top of the pillows then began placing raspberries on Kylei’s stomach. Kylei giggled so hard she was turning red from the laughter. Liz laughed right along with her, giving Kylei breaks in between raspberries.

Liz leaned over her, moving her shirt back down her stomach and running her hands down Kylei’s cheeks and their eyes connected.

“I don’t know why your mommy didn’t want you sweetie, but I will promise you this right now. I’ll never leave you…ever, no matter what.” Liz then placed a kiss on Kylei’s cheek. Kylei immediately lifted her arms and placed them around Liz’s neck.

Max had watched the entire exchange from the doorway. He choked back the sobs forming at the back of his throat. He loved Liz so much he just hoped that he didn’t let her down. He didn’t want to interrupt the moment but he needed to talk to Liz.

“Hey.”

“Hi Max.”

“So what’s going on here?”

“Oh Kylei and I were just you know…female bonding that’s all.” Liz said as she lifted Kylei and deposited her in her daddy’s arms.

“Hey pumpkin! You wanna give daddy a kiss and a hug?” Max asked his daughter who quickly leaned in and kissed his lips and hugged his neck tightly.

“She’s so amazing Max I mean that.” Max smiled and took Liz’s hand and walked them over to the bed. Liz knew Max wanted to talk so she did it quickly. Telling him that she was going there for a few days and should be back by the end of the week.

“Are you sure Liz?” He needed some kind of reassurance from her. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust her but he was so scared of losing her.

“I’m positive Max. I’ll be back I promise.” Liz smiled at him then placed a soft kiss on Max’s lips. Kylei watched the exchange and turned around and placed a kiss on Liz’s cheek.

“Oh for me? I feel so special!” Liz said happily.

“You are.” Max said barely above a whisper but Liz heard him.

“What time is your flight again?” Max asked as he stood to leave the room.

“Nine, you’re taking me right?” Liz asked him not really sure because they didn’t discuss it.

“Yes I am. Goodnight Liz.”

“Goodnight Max, Goodnight Kylei.” Liz leaned up on her tiptoes and kissed his lips softly then placed a kiss on Kylei’s forehead and watched as they exited her room.

Max walked to his room and placed Kylei in her crib after changing her then he went to take a long shower. He believed Liz would be back but would the time away make her change her mind about them? He hoped to God not.

Liz tried to sleep but she felt lonely without Max by her side or near her. She felt like now that they were going to try and be together she wanted to be with him. Liz tried to fight it for a few hours but she just couldn’t sleep. She figured it was probably because she would be leaving in the morning and she wouldn’t see him for a few days.

She knew she was pathetic she lived three years without him but now that he was back in her life she didn’t want to let go.

It was about two in the morning and Liz crept down the hallway and slipped into Max’s room. He was fast asleep; he looked so peaceful she thought. She ached to be next to him, to be held by him. She quickly closed the door as quietly as possible and slipped under the covers with him.

Max felt the bed shift and for the life of him couldn’t figure out why. He opened his eyes slightly only to find Liz looking down on him.

“Liz?” Max whispered out in question.

“Hi.” Liz ducked her head shyly.

“What’s wrong? Are you okay?” He sat up on the bed a little.

“I’m fine…well no that’s not true.” Liz said as she sat up on the bed. Max quickly joined her side running his hand through her hair and down her arms.

“What? Tell me?”

“I needed to be with you Max. I wish sometimes that the urge wasn’t so strong but I’m going to miss you.” Liz said honestly her voice filled with sadness.

“I’m going to miss you too Liz. It won’t be long though.” Max was going to miss her more, that much he knew but he didn’t want to upset her more.

“Can I…stay with you tonight Max?”

“Yes.” He answered simply then pulled her down against his chest and ran his hands through her hair. He closed his eyes and burned this moment into his mind along with the others from the past couple of days.

“Max?” Liz whispered out to him.

“Hmm?”

“Thank you.”

“For what Liz?” Max wasn’t sure if she was thanking him for letting her stay or what.

“For being honest with me. You could have sugar-coated it for me but you didn’t and I appreciate that.”

“Liz, if you’re going to try and trust me again I have to be honest it won’t work otherwise. I know that now.” Max said honestly because he knew that if he ever lied to Liz again there would not be another chance. She had given him a second one and she was not going to give him another one, which he knew.
“I know Max and I’m going to try really hard.” Liz vowed and lifted her head and placed her lips against his.

At first contact Max groaned, he loved the feel of her pressed against him and her lips against his at the same time. He wrapped his arms around her pulling her closer and Liz rolled on top of Max never breaking the kiss.

He ran his hands up her back and then cupped the back of her head, deepening the kiss. His body was on fire just from the kiss but having her pressed against him after so long he felt like he would explode. Liz felt Max’s body respond to her immediately as it had always done and a small part of her loved it. She slid her hands through his hair, loving the feel of it.

Liz pressed herself into Max harder and began kissing his neck, his earlobe and finally trailed kisses down his exposed chest. She slid down his body a little so that she could get a better feel of his muscular chest and kissed every piece of exposed skin.

Max couldn’t believe how great it felt to have Liz’s lips all over him. His breathing became erratic and he wanted to do nothing more then to take her right there but he couldn’t she deserved more than that. And he made a silent promise that when…if the time came that she let him make love to her he would make it special for her. He would take the time to explore her body and treasure it for a lifetime.

Liz began working her way back up his chest then to his lips, Max devoured her lips this time, he couldn’t stop he needed to fuse his body with hers. Liz loved being able to kiss him freely. Her body was like one electrical current that sparked every time Max’s lips touched hers.

Max heard Liz moan a little louder and that was enough to lift the sexual fog that had clouded over them for the past few minutes. Max pulled away slowly and placed small-chastised kisses on Liz’s lips before telling her they really should be getting some sleep.

Liz rolled over and was very thankful that Max was able to stop, if he hadn’t she didn’t know how far they would have gone. She knew she wanted to go slow but sometimes that’s easier said that done.

“Night Liz.”

“Night Max.” They both feel asleep shortly thereafter with contented smiles adorning their faces.

Tomorrow was another day and another hurdle to get over, but together they knew they could do it not because they had to but because they wanted to.

Chapter 17

“You ready to go?” Max peaked his head into Liz’s room when he saw her seated at the edge of the bed.

“Yes…no I just…this is really hard Max.” He knew she was upset about something and he suspected it didn’t have anything to do about missing him or Kylei.

Max walked into the room and kneeled down in front of her. He lifted his hand to tilt her chin up.

“Tell me what’s wrong Liz.” Max pleaded softly to her.

“Chris, I just…I know he’s not there but Max I was supposed to marry him and it’s just weird.” Liz wasn’t sure what her problem was that morning. She woke up in Max’s arms, they had breakfast together and then she came back upstairs to finish packing and it all just hit her.

“Liz, I’m sorry you know we never got to talk about that and I want you to know that the offer still stands, whenever you’re ready I’m here for you.” Max said upset with himself for not pushing her a little to find out what happened.

“No Max! It’s not that…well it’s not what you think. Max I didn’t love him. I think I thought I loved him, but I was just trying to forget you. You know Max, that when I saw him in bed with another girl, it didn’t upset me as much as I thought it would. That had to say something right there to me right?”

Max wasn’t sure how to respond, he would say ‘yes’ if it were him, but it’s not and he didn’t want to hurt Liz more with his words, however he did promise never to keep anything from her so he told her.

“See that’s what I mean Max, that says a lot right there. He was my fiancé and of course he treated me like crap right after he asked me to marry him.” Liz confessed softly.

“He did?” Max asked getting angrier by the second. While he should be kissing Chris’ ass for fucking up so bad, it hurt Liz in the process and he would never wish that upon her.

“Yes, he didn’t want to have anything to do with the wedding and whenever I mentioned it he just got upset with me. That doesn’t matter though that part of my life is closed and done. I have more important things to focus my attention on.” Liz said with a bright smile on her face the mood she was just in passed. Max leaned in slowly and gently placed a kiss on her lips then pulled away and placed a kiss on the tip of her nose.

“Let’s go or you’ll be late.” Max pulled her up and they left the house shortly thereafter.

Liz had decided to sit in the back seat so she could spend a little more time with Kylei. She was going to miss both her and Max immensely. It was funny to Liz how fast she became a part of their lives. She had for three years wished that she never saw Max Evans again. The only way she could rationalize it was that Max had changed and while he was still essentially the person she fell in love with all those years ago, he was older and more mature and has taken and continues to take responsibility for his actions.

She wasn’t forgetting that he cheated on her but she was learning to let go of the pain. Liz didn’t want to be angry anymore she wanted to live and she wanted to be happy for once in her life…truly happy. The odd thing was that Liz knew that no matter what the only person that could do that for her was Max.

He had the power to crush her but he had the power to heal her with just a few words. It was amazing and scary all at the same time for Liz. But she wasn’t going to let it hold her back.

“Alright we’re here.” Max said as he pulled into the parking garage and exited the Jeep.

Liz was already out and walked over to the other side of the vehicle to get Kylei out of her car seat. Liz hoisted Kylei up on her hip while Max removed her suitcase from the trunk.

“You gonna miss me sweetheart?” Liz said as she placed kisses all over Kylei’s face. Kylei squirmed but hugged Liz tightly. Max watched the exchange in silence and it saddened him. He was going to miss Liz so much. He just kept telling himself it would only be for a few days. After all he survived three years so a few days shouldn’t kill him…he hoped.

There was an announcement for Liz’s flight a few minutes later. They were now boarding and Liz needed to leave. She placed Kylei in Max’s arms. Max quickly pulled her into an embrace and kissed the top of her head. Tears sprang to Max’s eyes just as Liz looked up at him.

Liz lifted her hand to his face and swiped the tears the escaped the corners of his eyes and then gave him a big smile.

“I have to go.”

“I know. Here.” Max said as he pulled out an envelope from his pocket and handed it to her.

Liz simply looked at the envelope not knowing what was inside, when she reached to open it Max stopped her.

“Don’t! Just wait until you’re on the plane okay?”

“Okay I will, promise. Now I have to go.” Max simply nodded however neither of them moved away from each other.

Liz finally stepped away after she kissed Kylei one last time. She then leaned up on her tiptoes and placed a kiss on Max’s lips. The kiss was feather light leaving both of them wanting more. Liz had done that on purpose, she wanted Max to remember that it wouldn’t be their last one.

Max couldn’t let her go so he didn’t say another word as she turned and walked away.

Liz couldn’t look back so she kept her head forward and concentrated on the job she needed to get done quickly so she could return. Just as she was almost out of earshot Max called out to her.

“Liz!” Liz stopped and turned around slowly thinking she might have heard something.

Their eyes met and they both smiled at one another. Liz waved a final goodbye when she saw Kylei wave her tiny hand at her. She couldn’t wait to get back.

****

“So Max when is Liz coming back?” Serena said when she saw her cousin sulking in the corner of his bedroom.

“In a few days.” Max answered glumly.

“What’s wrong?” Serena was getting concerned. She figured he would be upset but happy that Liz was coming back and wanted to be with him.

“What if she changes her mind?” Max asked not even trying to hide his emotions.

“Did she give you any indication that she would?”

“No.” Max answered flatly.

“Well then you need to relax! Is Liz going to call you?” Serena reassured Max.

“Yes, she said that once she settled into her hotel she would.”

“See now stop worrying and let’s discuss the fact that I have a date and I have nothing to wear.” Max just rolled his eyes and laughed. She was right he needed to stop worrying about what Liz would and would not do.

Liz had landed in New York a few hours later and immediately took a cab to the hotel she would be staying at. After settling in the room, she ordered room service since she hadn’t eaten anything since early that morning.

She sat on her bed and leaned back on the headboard. Then remembered she never opened the envelope Max gave her. She leaned over and grabbed her purse from the nightstand pulling out the envelope.

Liz opened it up and saw inside was five hundred dollars cash and a letter. She couldn’t believe that Max had given her money; she placed the money on the bed and unfolded the letter.

Liz,

I put the money in this envelope because I knew that if I just handed it to you, you would refuse it.

I wrote this letter last night when I crept out of bed. I climbed outside and watched you from my balcony sleeping.

You look so peaceful sleeping. I could watch you forever Liz. Words cannot express how happy I am that you want to try to trust me…try and be with me. I just want you to know that you won’t regret it. I know how lucky I am to have found you in the first place and I’m so grateful that you have the kind of heart you do.

I know I don’t deserve it and I know I’ve put you through so much shit. I won’t apologize for it anymore just know that for the rest of my life I will try and make it up to you. Most people would probably say that it’s weak or it’s being spineless giving me another chance. They couldn’t be more wrong.

Liz you are the better person, the stronger person. I know you are probably reading this thinking that’s not true. But if you would see it through my eyes you would see how strong you are. You had your heart broken, you had your trust shattered twice but you are still able to love. You are still able to trust and most importantly you are open to forgiveness.

I know I haven’t earned that yet, but I’m so thankful that you have decided to give me a chance to prove to you how much I love you.

Because I do Liz, I love you more than you could even imagine. I know that’s probably hard for you to believe and I don’t expect you to love me back right away, but just know that I won’t stop…I won’t give up until I hear those three words pass your lips meant only for me.

I can’t wait to see you again.

Love,
Max

By the time Liz finished the letter she was in tears. She leaned over the bed and picked up the phone.

“Hello?” Max answered hoping it was Liz on the other end.

“Hi.” Liz said in a low raspy voice.

“Liz.” Max whispered out. Letting go of the breath he didn’t know he was holding.

“I read your letter.” Max was silent just waiting for her to say something about it.

“Thank you Max. Thank you for saying that I was strong.” Liz said shyly into the phone. She was a little embarrassed but wanted to be truthful with him.

“Don’t thank me Liz it’s the truth.” Max smiled into the phone when he heard a small giggle over the line from Liz.

“I’m glad you called.” Max said while making himself more comfortable on his bed.

“Yeah me too. I was waiting for room service because I’m starving and figured I’d give you a quick call.” She missed him so much already.

“How’s Kylei?” Liz missed the little girl just as much. Max smiled and his heart swelled for the love Liz had for his daughter.

“She’s good. She passed out in the car and now she’s playing with her Grandma downstairs.”

“I bet!” Liz said with a smile across her face, just picturing Kylei jabbering on while playing with her toys.

“Oh Max the room service is here, so I’m gonna have to go.” Liz said quickly getting up from the bed and walking over to the door.

“O-okay well then I’ll talk to you tomorrow. Have a goodnight Liz.”

“Yes I’ll call you tomorrow after I’m done getting my stuff. Goodnight Max and say hello to everyone for me.”

“I will. Bye Liz.”

“Bye Max.”

Max surprised himself because when he hung up the phone, instead of being depressed or sad he was relieved. He knew things were working themselves out and all he had to do was give it time and be patient. Max decided at that moment that he would just let things happen naturally, he wouldn’t force them. And however slow or fast his relationship with Liz went he would take it in stride. Max knew he had his whole life to be what Liz needed and he wasn’t going to let himself or her down ever again.

Chapter 18

That evening Serena was getting ready for her first date with Kyle. She was nervous, not because she never dated guys before, but because she really liked Kyle. Serena thought he had a great personality and wanted to get to know him better.

“Sere, Kyle’s here!” Max yelled down the hall to his cousin. He really didn’t have much time to stay upstairs because the diner was getting packed for the late evening crowd that always seemed to form. With Maria no longer being a waitress there they were really short handed. Maria had quit the day before, which Max and his mother were both very glad about.

“I’m coming! Tell him I’ll be right there!” Serena yelled back to him through the closed door. Max turned around and went back downstairs.

“Hi you look really beautiful.” Kyle said as soon as Serena approached him. He stood at the counter waiting for her. He was nervous, he liked Serena a lot but he had only dated a few girls while he was in town and wasn’t sure if he would be all that interesting to her.

“Thank you.” Serena said shyly with a blush.

A blush? Max witnessed the entire exchange from one of the tables he was taking an order from and he couldn’t believe that his cousin of all people was blushing. Max just looked over at Serena and smiled. She gave him a death glare and he knew that he was never to speak of that moment ever again. Max shook his head and went about his orders.

A few hours later Max was getting Kylei ready for bed and Diane stopped by his room, she needed to have a talk with her son. It was long overdue and after the day he had been having it was very necessary.

“Hi honey.” Diane said as she stepped into his open door.

“Oh hi Mom.” Max lifted his back off the bed and rested it against his headboard making room for his mother to have a seat.

“Max how are you doing?” Diane asked concerned about her only child.

“I’m okay Mom. Today was just a really busy and frustrating day and I’m glad it’s over.” Max said to his mother. He tried to roll the stress of the day off his shoulders by being nonchalant about it, but his mother knew better.

“Max, honey you are running yourself into the ground here. You are only twenty years old.”

“Yes Mom, but I have a baby to take care of and…”

“Nonsense Max, you know damn well your father left us enough money. You can go back to school and…”

“No Mom! Who would run the diner? You all by yourself? In fact I’m sure we are going to need to hire a new cook soon. I talked to Michael last night and he’s going to be leaving after the summer is over, he wants to make sure we have a replacement before he goes.” Max finished sadly. Once Serena left, then Michael would be leaving, everyone was moving on and getting out of Roswell…except for him.

Diane thought it was time that her son started living again. He had made mistakes but that didn’t mean he had to pay for them for the rest of his life. She knew that he was still upset with himself for not being able to say goodbye to his father, but there was nothing anyone could do.

Diane looked into the eyes of her baby boy, she knew he wasn’t a baby any longer but he was her only child. She loved him more than any words or actions could express and therefore because she loved him so much she knew that she needed to let him go. There was a whole world out there for him, and her granddaughter to see. She didn’t want to be another person he felt responsible for.

“Max I have been thinking and you know how we have had a few offers on the diner?” Diane asked the question but didn’t wait for a response.

“Well I think we need to sell.”

“What?! No, Mom we can’t!” Max was getting more upset by the minute. It was his father’s life’s work how could he just sell it? It felt wrong.

“Yes, Max. This job is just too stressful for me and…”

“I can handle it Mom, you don’t have to do anything.” Max tried to reassure his mother that they could still keep the diner running he would just take on more of the work. He didn’t really know when or how he would do that but he would do it for his mother.

“No! Max you are killing yourself. Max you are too young to have to deal with all the stress of running a business, that’s what happened to your father. I don’t want that to happen to you.”

“Mom, but this was his you know and he left it to me and I feel like I have to do it.”

“You don’t owe him anything Max. He was your father and he loved you so much, he worked hard for you not because he wanted you to repay him by being stressed out all the time and unhappy.”

“I’m not unhappy.” Max crossed his arms stubbornly.

Diane saw that he was thinking about what she was saying but she wouldn’t push him. She would let the conversation drop for now. Diane decided to ask how Liz was doing since she and Max haven’t had the chance to talk since Liz left.

“She’s doing alright. I talked to her last night.”

“You miss her don’t you?”

“Yes but it’s okay because I would wait for her mom, as long as she needed.”

“I know you would honey. So is everything okay with you guys?” Diane didn’t want to pry too much into his private life but wanted to know where they stood.

“Yes, she’s going to give me another chance. She said that she wanted to be with me.” Max felt a sense of peace come over him at his confession.

“I’m so happy. I knew that she would, once she got to know you again. And I am so proud of you Max, I know I don’t tell you as often as I should but I am. You couldn’t make me prouder. But I’m serious; I want you to think about selling.” Diane finished sternly.

“I’ll think about it mom.” Diane left the room without another word. Max just rolled over in his bed staring at his ceiling. He wasn’t sure if he should do what his mother asked and sell the diner.

Max truly felt torn between a life he would be able to have if he wasn’t tied to the diner and the loyalty to his father. He wished he could talk to Liz but it was late already and she was probably sleeping. And Serena was still out on her date with Kyle. Instead Max opted for sitting in his daughter’s room to watch her sleep.

Liz had been trying to get to bed for the last hour but it was becoming impossible. She missed Max like crazy. She wondered what he was doing right that moment and wanted to call him.

“He’s probably busy.” Liz muttered to herself in her darkened hotel room. She rolled over and turned on the television and began flipping through the channels.

A movie had grabbed her attention and started her thinking about what she would do once she got back to Roswell. She would need to find a job as well a place to live. She hadn’t asked Max if staying with him and his mother was a possibility. Besides she didn’t want to be dependent on him. She knew he was obviously under a lot of stress with the diner and keeping it running and she didn’t want to add to it.

She really wanted to talk to him and it was killing her not to just pick up the phone and call.

****

“Hey Max.” Serena whispered when she entered Kylei’s bedroom and saw her cousin just sitting there watching his daughter.

“Hi. How was your date?” Max asked in a whispered voice while motioning for her to join him in his room. After entering his room Max closed the door so they wouldn’t wake Kylei.

“It was great! I had such a good time with Kyle. I really like him Max.” Serena was still coming off her high from the evening.

“So what did you guys end up doing?” Max asked as he lay across his bed. Serena lay right next to him getting comfortable.

“He took me to dinner first and then we went…dancing.”

“Dancing? Are you sure you were on a date with Kyle?” Max joked with her. Serena just rolled her eyes and slapped Max’s arm.

“Yes dancing! What is that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing it’s just I’ve seen Kyle dance and it’s not pretty.” Max smirked and dodged another slap from his cousin.

“Now he’s not graceful but he’s funny and just fun to be around.” Serena says trying to defend Kyle’s integrity.

“I know. I’m glad you had a good time. So when’s the next date?”

“There isn’t going to be one.” Serena finished sadly.

“What? Why?” Max was confused. If she had a good time why wouldn’t she want to go out again?

“Because what is the point Max? I won’t lie to myself and say oh we’ll keep in touch because that never happens. It’s better to just end it now before it gets started.”

“Bullshit! You’re scared.” Max called his cousin on her bluff.

“I am not! I just…”

“You’re scared. I don’t believe it I mean you of all people, but I know that’s what it is.”

“Oh alright fine. You’re right. I am because I’m leaving Max in a few months and well then what?” Serena said with a heavy sigh.

“Sere, look Kyle is a great guy why don’t you just give it a chance and see what happens and then cross that bridge when it gets here…if it gets here.” Max said trying to comfort his cousin in some way. Serena closed her eyes for a few minutes and thought about what Max was saying and she realized he was right. She should go for it. She has never backed down from anything before so why start now she thought.

“You know Max when did you get so smart?” She teases him.

“Oh I don’t know but I will say it was very recent.” Max says as he reaches out to tickle Serena’s sides.

“Stop! Max! Come on you know I hate it when you do that.” Serena squirmed off the bed and Max was getting ready to take her down once again but stopped when he heard the phone ring. Max practically jumped over the bed to answer it.

“Hello?” Max answered somewhat out of breath.

“Hi Max.” Liz was so relieved to hear his voice that she actually sighed into the phone.

“Liz, are you okay?” Max asked mainly because he knew it was really late where she was.

“Yeah, are you busy?”

“No not at all what’s up?” Max saw Serena motion for the door and waved him goodnight closing the door behind her. Max laid down on his bed and turned off his lights so that he could just focus on her voice.

“Nothing I just couldn’t sleep. And then I had like a million things run through my head.” Liz made herself comfortable in the dark under her covers.

“Like what?” Max was interested in hearing what she was thinking about.

“When I get back to Roswell Max I will need to decide what I want to do with my life you know?”

“Yeah.”

“And then I have to get a place…”

“You can stay here Liz you know that right?”

“I knew you would say that but I don’t want to intrude or anything.”

“Intrude? Liz that’s the last thing you would be doing. I mean if you don’t want to stay that’s fine but at least wait until you have a job and then you can move if you want.” Max wanted her to at least be settled before trying to get her own place.

“Thank you I will probably have to take you up on the offer.” Liz smiled into the phone. She enjoyed the ease of conversation they were able to have.

“So how’s Kylei? She’s sleeping right?”

“Yeah she fell asleep a little while ago. And Serena got home from her date with Kyle a few minutes ago.”

“Really? How did it go?” Liz wanted to ask Max a question but decided to wait a few more minutes.

“It went really well they both like each other a lot so I’m sure there will be more dates.” Max could tell that Liz had something on her mind. She seemed kind of distant.

“Max, can I ask you something?” Liz made up her mind she wanted to ask this question the other night but decided to just wait.

“Anything.” He answered truthfully; there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t answer for her.

“It’s about Maria. I mean what happened that you guys ended up as close as you were?” Liz waited with baited breath. She was hoping it wasn’t because they went out or anything like that.

“Her mom died and well I knew exactly what she was going through. I mean her father left as you know years ago and it was just her and her mom and now she was gone. I went to the hospital when Maria called me to tell me that her mother was getting worse and I stayed with her a lot of nights when Michael couldn’t be there. We just started talking and it grew from there. But Liz that’s not important.” Max couldn’t figure out why she wanted to talk about Maria. He sure as hell didn’t want to talk about her.

“I know but I mean was it…I mean…don’t get mad okay?”

“Mad why would I get mad?” He couldn’t for the life of him figure out what the hell Liz was trying to get at.

“Did you sleep with her Max?” Liz asked quickly wanting to get it over with.

“What?!” Max bolted upright in his bed. He must have heard her wrong or something because that is just…he couldn’t even think about sleeping with Maria.

“I just…” Liz started only to be cut off my Max.

“No. Why would you ask me that? I would never sleep with her. She was your best friend or was or whatever. Did she tell you that?” Max was furious. He knew that his reputation was not great but why would Liz think that?

“No! Max I’m sorry. I just. I don’t know how to say this Max.” Liz sighed heavily frustrated into the phone. This was coming out all wrong.

“Say what Liz?” Max was confused. Did she think he was that bad?

“I know you slept with a lot of girls Max and I just wondered if maybe you did with her and that’s why she was the way she was.”

“Is that what you think of me?” Max was hurt beyond words.

“No, Max you have it all wrong…” Liz tried to explain herself but Max wanted no part of it.

“I don’t have it wrong. You think that I slept with Maria and that’s why she was in love with me, well you’re wrong Liz.” Max was furious at this point and he couldn’t help the sarcasm that emanated through his voice.

“Max please just let me tell you.” Liz pleaded but she knew she really offended Max and didn’t know how to fix it now.

“What Liz? That you think I’m a fucking bastard that sleeps with anything with a pulse?” Max needed to end the conversation. He never thought in a million years that Liz would throw up in his face his past encounters.

“That’s not what I meant. I just I needed to know.” Liz was practically in tears but she didn’t let Max know.

“Well now you know Liz but I have to go. I have an early day tomorrow.” Max needed to get off the phone. He was struggling to keep up his angry façade while underneath he was ripping in two from the hurt.

“Okay well I’ll call you tomorrow and I’m sorry Max…”

“Goodnight Liz.” Max said right before he hung up and turned over in his bed and cried. He knew that one day she would realize he wasn’t worth it…he just didn’t know it would be that soon.

After Liz hung up with Max she broke down into loud sobs. She hurt him with her question and she knew it, but it really came out wrong. Liz was scared that she ruined things with Max by not telling him the real reason why she asked the question. Now she needed to find a way to make it up to Max but she had no idea how.

Chapter 19

Max woke up to the sound of his daughter crying, which was a surprise to him because she usually didn’t cry out.

“What’s wrong with my baby girl huh?” Max lifted his daughter in his arms, changed her diaper and her clothes to bring her downstairs. Kylei was cranky and she didn’t want to be held and she didn’t want to be put down either. She never acted like that before so Max wasn’t sure what the problem was.

When he reached the bottom step of the backroom to the diner his mother pushed through the doors when she heard her granddaughter crying.

“What’s wrong Max?” Diane asked worried. Her granddaughter was hysterical at this point. Max was gently rocking her against his chest and rubbing small circles across her back trying to soothe her.

“I don’t know she just woke up like this.” Max was starting to get worried.

“Okay let me see something.” Diane slowly placed her finger inside Kylei’s mouth to feel around on her gums. Sure enough she was teething.

“It’s okay Max she’s just teething. I’ll go upstairs and get something for her to take and then just lay her down in the playpen after she settles down.” Max let out a breath he had been holding. He hated to see his daughter that distraught, it broke his heart that she was hurting but at least he knew now what the problem was.

“Thanks mom.” Diane smiled and placed a kiss on her son’s temple before heading upstairs.

“Daddy loves you sweetie. How about we see where aunt Serena is?” Max cooed to his daughter who seemed to be calming down a little. She was down to a few sniffles here and there. Max continued to rub her back and place kisses on top of her head. Kylei simply snuggled up to her father and didn’t want to let go.

“Hey Max!” Serena turned around from refilling the napkin holders and saw her cousin enter with a tear stained Kylei.

“What’s wrong?” Serena asked worriedly.

“She just woke up crying, apparently she’s teething.” Max said as he placed his daughter on the counter and took a seat at one of the stools.

“And you?” Serena knew there was something bothering her cousin she just couldn’t figure out what.

“Nothing.” Max said quickly.

“Max.”

“Liz and I had a fight.”

“Wh…” Max stopped Serena’s outburst with a look that said he didn’t want everyone to know about it.

“Yeah she asked me if I slept with Maria.” Max finished sadly. He then ran his hands through his daughter’s hair.

“No.” Serena couldn’t believe it. Why would Liz ask such a question? Didn’t she know that Max would never sleep with one of Liz’s friends, especially someone that was supposedly her best friend?

“Yes. I just…I blew up Sere I couldn’t take it that she thought of me like that.”

“So now what?”

“Now I get to work and I’ll talk to her later. She’s supposed to be calling me or whatever.”

“Max…”

“Don’t Sere I just…leave it be okay? Please.” Max pleaded with his cousin to not divulge deeper into the mystery of why Liz asked him that question. Serena simply nodded.

“Oh, do you think later tonight we can talk?” Max wanted to get her opinion on selling the diner. He was still torn and needed to hear what she had to say.

“Sure! I have a date with Kyle right after I’m done here, so when I get back is that okay?”

“Yes that’s perfect.”

Liz woke up very late and tired as hell. She didn’t get much sleep last night and today she had to head over to her old place and gather her things. She didn’t even feel like getting out of bed, but she knew the quicker she got it done the quicker she could get back to Max.

She was still so upset with herself for hurting Max. Liz now had some idea of what it felt like to be Max. Granted it wasn’t exactly the same situation but she hurt him and she felt like shit, the problem was she didn’t know how to fix it. That is what Max must have felt like all this time, she thought.

Liz quickly got dressed and made her way to the local coffee shop, hoping that some caffeine would get her dragging body moving. She then took a cab to her old apartment.

When Liz arrived and opened up the door a wave of emotions hit her. There was deep sadness. Not because of Chris but because of herself. She was lying to herself all that time; although her and Chris were not together very long she just let him take over her life. Max might have hurt her but he never tried to control her or the things she did.

The further she walked into the house the more anger then took over. She was angry with herself for letting things get to the point of marriage with Chris. Deep down in the back of her mind she knew she didn’t love him. Not the way someone who is making that ultimate commitment should love.

When she entered the bedroom she stopped and said a silent prayer. She was glad that she never gave herself to Chris; she must have known that things were not meant to be even if it was subconsciously. Liz took a better look around and found that other than a few photo albums and some scattered clothing there wasn’t anything of hers there.

“How is that possible?” She thought aloud. Surely after living there for months there would be something of hers of significance.

Liz fell to her knees when she realized that she really didn’t have anything other than those few items, everything she ever had with Chris was his. He bought everything and he paid for everything. She cried at her naivety.

Liz wanted to do nothing more than to call Max because she knew he would be the only person in the world that could make her feel better about herself right now. She didn’t know how he did it but he gave her a confidence she never thought she possessed.

Rising quickly she gathered her few belongings and made her way outside to hail a taxi. She was in tears and she needed to calm down because she knew she couldn’t call Max. He probably never wanted to talk to her again, she thought.

The diner was filling up quickly with the morning rush and luckily for Max, Kylei settled down enough and fell into a peaceful sleep before it got too busy.

It was already late in the afternoon and the lunch crowd was just about cleared out. Serena went into the back to grab something to eat and Max sat at one of the booths with his mother to discuss the diner.

“Have you thought about it?” Diane asked hoping that her son came to some kind of decision.

“I have mom but I’m still not sure it’s just hard to let it go.” Max said sadly to his mother. He knew she understood his dilemma but it was ultimately his decision and that was the problem. He didn’t know what he should do.

“I know but Max you can get out of here and I can retire in Boston like your father and I planned.” Diane wasn’t trying to push Max into making the decision but she wasn’t getting any younger and the daily hustle and bustle of running the diner was wearing on her. Not to mention the amount of money they spend keeping the business running, yes they made money but they were spending it just as quickly.

“I want that for Kylei, I mean Roswell isn’t a bad place but I want her to have more opportunities than she will have here, I just…I need to think about it a little more okay?”

“That’s fine. I just want to tell you that Mr. Johnson called today again and made us another offer. Maybe you could just meet with him and find out what he plans on doing with the diner if you were to sell it to him.” Mr. Johnson had been trying to buy the diner for about six months now and he was a wealthy man with money to spend. It was her husband’s life’s work but Diane knew her husband better than anyone and they had already discussed that once Max had graduated college he would sell the business and they would retire. She knew that having her son sell the business would not go against anything her husband had wanted anyway.

“Okay mom, we can meet with him. Just call him and set something up and we’ll go see him this week.” Max decided that his mother was only looking out for his and Kylei’s best interests and if he was honest the diner was running him into the ground, emotionally and physically. He wanted to enjoy life with his daughter and God willing Liz.

“Thank you sweetheart.” Diane said and placed her hand over her sons before making her way into the back. The last of the lunch crowd had cleared and except for a couple sitting in one of the corner booths the place was empty.

“Max!” Diane yelled to Max from the backroom. Max walked into the backroom only to find his mother with the telephone receiver in her hand and the mouthpiece covered.

“Yeah mom?”

“It’s Liz.” Diane held the phone and told him to take the call upstairs and that she and Serena would keep an eye on things. Max nodded and then quickly made his way upstairs to his bedroom and closed the door.

“I got it mom.” Max waited until his mother hung up the phone downstairs before speaking.

“Hi Liz.” Max said as he plopped himself on his bed and waited for her to speak.

“Hi Max…I just wanted to…I…” Liz broke down she couldn’t hold back her tears.

“Liz, baby what’s wrong?” Max sat up a little wondering why she was crying. He knew she was probably upset about last night but surely she wouldn’t be that upset right?

“I…I’m so sorry Max. I just…I was stupid and insensitive and I…”

“Shh, Liz it’s okay. It's okay just calm down and stop crying. I know you didn’t mean it. I’m sorry Liz I should have let you explain before getting so upset. It’s understandable after all with the reputation I had for those thoughts to cross your mind and I shouldn’t have exploded at you, you didn’t do anything wrong and you had every right to know.” Max pleaded with her softly to understand that she had nothing to apologize for.

“No! Max how could I even think you would do that? That was just wrong and I feel terrible. I don’t think of you like that at all. That’s not what I was trying to ask you but I got scared and…” Liz was trying to make sense of all the thoughts running through her head but was failing miserably.

“What were you trying to ask me Liz?” Max didn’t care he knew she didn’t mean those words, she was so upset and he knew Liz. She would never intentionally hurt anyone.

“Remember when you said that you didn’t sleep with me because you thought that I should have waited for someone else and that you didn’t deserve it?” Liz asked hesitantly.

“Yes.” Max didn’t know where this line of questioning was headed.

“Did you mean that? Or was it easier saying that instead of saying you weren’t attracted to me that way? That you didn’t want to sleep with me?” Liz finished completely embarrassed. Max wasn’t prepared for that question but he answered her honestly.

“Liz there was never a time from the first moment I saw you that I wasn’t attracted to you, that I didn’t want you. I truly meant that you should have waited for someone that would love you, cherish you and treat you with the respect you deserve. I wasn’t giving you that and…” Max wasn’t sure what else he could say to her to make Liz understand how he felt.

“You love me Max right?”

“Yes.” He answered without hesitation.

“Will you cherish me Max?”

“Yes the way you deserve, the way I never did before Liz.” He declared wholeheartedly.

“Do you respect me?”

“Yes and I plan on proving it to you, if you give me the chance.” He answered her question and waited to hear if she had another one, but she didn’t.

“I miss you.” She cried into the phone.

“I miss you too Liz. Tell me what’s wrong, please.” Max pleaded he couldn’t handle listening to her crying any longer. He wanted to hold her and wipe her tears away, but he couldn’t.

“I went to the house today and I realized something Max. I realized that I was living a lie. I build this wall around me to keep my feelings for you away, but all I did was build this lie of feelings. I haven’t been living these last three years, I’ve been surviving and I realized something on my way back to the hotel today.”

“What? What did you realize?” Max held his breath and waited to hear what she had to say. He just hoped that it wasn’t anything too terrible.

“I realized that I want to live Max. I want to see the world, I want to experience true love, I want to have a family, and I want to be happy, truly happy. Most of all I want to be with you and that terrifies me. I could loose myself in you Max and that is scary.”

“Liz…” Max’s voice was hitched from the lump that formed in his throat.

“I want to be with you and Kylei so bad and I am trying hard to stop those feelings because I…I won’t survive if you break my heart again Max. I won’t.” Liz was in tears not because she was upset but because she was finally able to tell Max everything she was feeling. Something she was never able to do before.

“Liz, I’m terrified that you’ll love me back. It’s all I ever hoped for and if that day comes I’m scared that I won’t be able to be everything that you need. I’m afraid that I’ll fall short and disappoint you. But Liz I will never break your heart…never again. I will do everything in my power to make you happy and to be everything that you need. I’m not perfect so I can’t make you empty promises for things that have yet to happen and that may never happen. I can however promise that as long as I live I will try and make you happy, and if you choose me I will fight everyday not to let you down.” Max confessed both his fears and his hopes for a life with her.

At his words Liz wanted to tell Max right then and there how much she loved him, but she didn’t want to say something like that over the phone so she would wait.

“Do you believe me Liz?” Max asked when Liz fell silent.

“Yes I do Max. I believe you. I have to get going I have a few more things to do tonight. I just needed to talk to you.”

“I’m glad you called.” Max smiled into the phone.

“Me too. I’ll call you either tonight or tomorrow. Bye Max.”

“Bye Liz.” Max hung up the phone and rolled over on his bed and a smile stretched across his face. He was so happy that they both admitted their fears; it was a big step in a long process of healing one another, which they both desperately craved for.
