A/N - Okay guys sorry I'm late. Anyway I wanted to just point out two things real quick that most of you are assuming about Max and Liz.

First of all yes they are being irresponsible since Liz had only been on the pill for one day, but don't forget that Max would have no idea of how long she would need to be on it in order for it to work properly  (some grown men still don't know how it all works lol)

Secondly, with Liz; yes she knows better but she's not using her head right now. But don't assume that just because they are sleeping together at the *right times* means it's that *easy* for her to get pregnant. It takes some people a hell of a lot longer if ever to get pregnant no matter what age.

So just keep those things in the back of your head. Oh! That's not to say that Liz isn't pregnant but well you'll have to wait won'tcha  Sorry, I know you are all wondering but since this is the kind of story it is, I didn't want it to be completely predictable

Thanks so much for the feedback! I hope to be posting this story twice a week very soon, there is so much more to this story and I'm just working out the rest of the kinks!

Chapter 20

“Liz we need to stop.” Those words sounded foreign even to his ears, but it was true. It seemed as though that was the only thing she wanted to do with him. Shouldn’t it be the other way around, he thought.

“Stop? What do you mean?”

“Liz, you know what I mean. Let’s go out and do something.”

“We are doing something.” She huffed and sat back on the bed.

“Liz, your parents are down stairs. Didn’t Maria say that we have to meet them for the movies in a little while?”

“Yeah, so?”

“Liz.”

“Max.”

“Don’t you want to go?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Cause I want to stay here with you. I want to make love to you.” He rolled his eyes. He wanted that too, so much. But it wasn’t healthy even he knew as much for them to only be with each other. They needed to go out and do things.

“I want that too, but it will be fun, Liz.” Liz jumped off the bed as if he’d burnt her.

“Wait? Are you trying to say I’m some kind of…nymph?”

“Huh? I didn’t say that.”

“You didn’t have to!” She turned on her heels and stormed out of his room. He threw his head back. How the hell was he going to fix this?

He fixed his shirt and pants and walked across the hall to her room. Her door was closed, more like locked. He knocked but she yelled at him. Max knew she needed time, so he decided to go downstairs for a little while. He hoped that she would come downstairs so they could go out.

“Hi Max.” Jeff entered the room; he was getting ready to go out to dinner with his wife and heard yelling coming from upstairs as well as his daughter’s bedroom door slamming shut.

“Hi.” Max felt miserable. He hurt Liz’s feelings and by doing so he was breaking his own heart.

“You okay?”

“Yeah, I’m fine.”

“Liz?”

“Yeah.”

“You want to talk about it?” Jeff took a seat beside the young man; he could tell he was upset. Max wanted to talk about it. He needed someone to talk to, but this was his daughter. He couldn’t possibly tell him that she was upset because he wouldn’t sleep with her. No, Max didn’t see that conversation going over well.

“No.” But maybe he could avoid the subject and try to get advice anyway.

“She’s mad at me. I told her something and she took it the wrong way. I hurt her feelings.” Max finished miserably.

“I can understand that. Women, they don’t even understand themselves, I don’t know how they ever expect us to.” Jeff tried to lighten the mood, and he succeeded. Max was laughing to himself.

“Exactly.”

“Don’t worry, she’ll come around when she realizes that she jumped to conclusions.”

“Yeah?”

“Yes. Now why don’t you grab something to eat, aren’t you both supposed to be going out?”

“Yeah, when she decides to talk to me again.” Max quipped lightly.

“Right.”

“I’m ready!” Nancy announced as she descended the stairs.

Max made his way into the kitchen as soon as Jeff and Nancy left. He decided to make a sandwich for her and him; surely she would get hungry soon.

“What are you doing?” He heard her voice. His back was to her and he wanted to turn around but decided against it.

“Making you something to eat. I don’t want you to be hungry in the theater.” That is if she decided that she still wanted to go with him, he thought.

“Oh.” Liz entered the room slowly and took a seat on the stool at the counter. She watched as he cut her sandwich in half, just the way she liked it and put a pickle on the side. He placed the plate in front of her with a bottle of water. She smiled to herself, he knew her so well.

“I’m sorry.” Max stopped his movements and looked up at her. A small smile played on his lips.

“Me too.” They ate in silence until the phone rang.

“Hello?”

“Where the hell are you guys?”

“Shit! I’m sorry, we’re leaving right now Maria.” Liz hung up and turned to see Max standing in the doorway with her jacket in hand.

“Thanks.” She turned and allowed him to place it on her; they left the house shortly thereafter.

They decided to leave the subject alone for the moment. They had plenty of time to talk about it.

****

After the movie, they went to a local diner, where they met up with several people from school. It was a good three hours before they left. The ride home was filled with uncomfortable silence, Max honestly didn’t know what to do about it either.

He felt like if he said something, she would take it wrong. Liz felt stupid. In fact she was embarrassed. Did Max really thing that of her? Sure she knew she jumped to conclusions, but she knew she wasn’t too far from the truth. He didn’t want to sleep with her; maybe he just didn’t like it with her. Maybe he didn’t want to be with her anymore. Tears formed in her eyes and she blinked them back. She wouldn’t breakdown here.

Unfortunately, when they arrived home, Jeff and Nancy were in the living room watching television, which meant they would have to wait to talk.

“Hey kids! How was the movies?”

“Good. Great. I’m going to bed.” Liz stated and ran up the stairs. Max watched with a bewildered look on his face as she ran from him.

This was worse than he thought.

“Max?”

“Yes?” Nancy stood in front of him; she knew something was going on. Jeff had already made her aware of it. She just didn’t know what was wrong.

“You want to talk?” She asked him softly. Max turned to her, looked over her shoulder at Jeff who was doing a pretty good job of pretending like he wasn’t paying attention, and nodded.

Nancy took him by the shoulder and led him to the kitchen. Max thought that was where they were going to talk, but he was wrong. Nancy continued through the kitchen out the back door. She settled on the step and waited for Max to join her.

After a few minutes, Nancy thought she would have to make the first move, but she was wrong.

“She’s so angry with me.” Max mumbled out. He needed to fix this but he didn’t have a clue as to how. Hopefully Nancy could help. It was at times like this he really yearned for his mother.

“What about?”

“She misunderstood something I told her before. And I thought she was okay, when she came downstairs and we went to the movies, but as soon as we got in the car to come back home, she went back to ignoring me. And it’s killing me.” Max confessed softly. Nancy reached out a hand and placed it on his back.

“Well what was it?” Max snapped his head in her direction. He could not tell her!

“I can’t tell you.”

“Max, I know I’m her mother but you can talk to me.” Max swallowed nervously and proceeded to tell her.

“She thinks…that…I…” He couldn’t do it.

“That you?”

“That I don’t want her.”

“Oh!” Nancy was not expecting that. But knew that Max needed someone and he didn’t have anyone. She vowed no matter the situation she would always be there for him, this was not an exception.

“I’m sorry this is really weird.” Max apologized. But Nancy stopped him. She knew that Max talked to his mother about everything. Nancy knew he needed her. She liked Max and trusted him, he was honest and open and he didn’t lie to her.

“No, Max it’s okay. I know that you and your mother had a very open relationship and well I can’t say that I’m happy that my daughter is no longer a virgin. But I can say that if it had to be anyone that I’m happy it was you.”

“Really? Why?” Max asked very intrigued by Nancy’s confession.

“Because I know you love her. I know that I asked you to wait but I already knew that you meant to keep your intentions but my daughter is a little firecracker.” Nancy smiled, knowing Max knew exactly what she was talking about.

“That she is.” Max chuckled to himself.

“Max, this is hard I’m sure, but you are both young I just don’t want you two getting hurt.”

“I know but it seems like everything I do is just wrong for her.”

“No, that’s not it, Max…”

“No? Then what is it?” Did she have the answer? He hoped she did.

“It’s love Max. It’s complicated and you guys are really young. You grow up so fast you and forget to stop and look around and wait.”

“I know but Liz doesn’t want to hear it.”

“Then make her Max.” Max nodded and realized Nancy was right. He needed to get her to understand what he meant. And if she chose to stay upset with him, then he could take it. He wasn’t wrong and he couldn’t let her think otherwise.

****

“Liz?” He knocked on her door softly.

“Leave me alone, Max.” Liz sniffled softly.

“I can’t.”

“Learn to.” She retorted sarcastically.

“Liz, just let me explain. And after I’m done if you want me to leave, I will.” He didn’t want to but he would.

“Fine!” She hoped off the bed, unlocked the door and crawled back under her covers. She didn’t want to see him. She was being immature, but did he really think she was a fiend? She groaned inwardly. She was ashamed.

“Talk Max. Your time is running out.” Liz mumbled out and turned over to her side.

Max decided to sit beside her, not facing her so that he could say what he needed to say.

“Liz, I love you. Everything about you. And I want you, but that’s not all I want from you. I need you, all of you. I love spending time with you. I love making you laugh, seeing you smile, but most of all I love showing you off to the world. I want to be with you and we have the rest of our lives to make love, but we should enjoy other things…I didn’t mean to hurt you, but I…”

“You made me feel like you didn’t want me. Like I was doing something wrong.” Liz whispered out softly trying to hold back the sob that was threatening to escape past her lips.

Max turned quickly and laid down beside her. He brushed the hair away from her face and waited until she looked at him.

“I want you, Liz. God, do I want you and you didn’t do anything wrong. We just need to take things slow,” He couldn’t believe he was saying that, but it was true.

“I know. It’s just hard to stay away from you. I love being in your arms, I love the way you make me feel…” Max leaned in and kissed her forehead softly.

“I know, I love it too, but we have time, Liz.” She nodded and allowed him to cover her lips softly. They kissed each other gently and he pulled her closer to him, holding her until she fell asleep.

“I love you, Liz. Don’t ever think otherwise.”

“I won’t…I promise.” Liz mumbled out softly as sleep took over. Max held her a little longer before returning to his room.

He felt infinitely better, they had their first argument, he was sure there would be many more, but so long as they had their love and trust, Max knew they would be just fine.

Chapter 21

2 weeks later

“Liz what are you doing?”

“I am what they call seducing you or at least trying to.” Liz whispered out softly, while she kissed his naked chest.

“Liz, we can’t.” Max wanted to, so bad, but her parents were right down the hall.

“Oh yes Max, we can. It’s your birthday and I’m going to make sure you never forget it.” Liz smiled against his chest and continued her journey south.

When she reached the waistband of his boxers, she hooked her fingers into them and pulled them down his muscular legs. He was already ready for her. A small smile played on her lips. He was always ready for her, she thought. She bent down over him and took him into her soft, warm mouth. Max hissed out softly as soon as she did. It had been a full two weeks since they had even touched each other this intimately.

The moonlight shined through his window, giving him an unobstructed view of her. He watched as she drew him in and out of her mouth over and over again. After a few minutes he was on edge. He needed to finish, but she pulled away.

“Liz?” Max questioned confusingly.

“Why did you stop?”

“Because, that’s not how I want you to finish.” She smiled at him and stood up. She crossed her arms over her chest and lifted her nightgown over to head, allowing it to drop to the floor silently. She then crawled into his lap.

Max needed to touch her. He leaned up caressed her breasts, kneading them between his fingers, then closed the distance and pulled one of her nipples into his mouth. Liz moaned out, “Shh, Liz we have to be quite.” Liz nodded in the dimly lit room and before she knew it, he was lifting her up under her arms and sinking her onto his hard length.

“Max…” Liz hissed out softly and Max decided the only way they would get through this without her parents hearing was if he swallowed all her moans.

“Wait…” He broke the kiss and pushed her gently off of him.

“W-what?” Liz panted out breathless. He was not stopping!

“Protection, Liz…we…”

“Max, don’t you remember? I’m on the pill. It’s okay.” Liz smiled and raised herself above him once again, and once their bodies were aligned she sunk herself on him once again. He clutched her tiny waist and leaned back allowing her free reign on his body.

They kissed each other hungrily all the while trying to keep their moans to a minimum. She rode his length until her first orgasm ripped through her and when Max felt her arousal drip down his length, he leaned up and wrapped his arms around her and began to trust up into her body. Minutes later as she was on the brink of her second orgasm. She felt Max’s release and that was what she needed to go over the edge.

Afterwards they both laid in silence, trying to get their breathing back to normal. Max leaned up and covered their cooling bodies with his blanket. Liz cuddled up against him, closing her eyes as sleep took over.

“Happy birthday, Max.” Liz smiled against his chest.

“Thank you, baby. This definitely blew my birthday present to you out of the water,” he joked with her.

“Are you kidding me? This couldn’t even come close to that, never Max…never.” Max smiled and pulled her closer, allowing sleep to take over. They had been setting the alarm for four in the morning, so that they could sleep together some nights and so that Liz would be back in her room in enough time to not get caught.

****

“Happy birthday, Max.” Jeff and Nancy greeted Max as he entered the dining room for breakfast.

“Thank you.”

“So seventeen. You ready to take your drivers test today?” Max smiled, hell yes he was! He had been practicing with Andre everyday and he knew he would do just fine.

“Yes he is! Are you kidding me? That’s all he’s been talking about for the past two weeks.” Liz teased as she bounced into the dining room. She placed a kiss on Max’s cheek wishing him a happy birthday and taking a seat beside him.

“Yes, he was.” Nancy teased. Max’s cheeks burned, he couldn’t help that he was really happy about having that freedom.

“So I’ll take you this morning for your test, then tonight is your party.” Jeff stated as he sipped the last of his coffee.

“Party?” Max questioned. He didn’t know he was having a party.

“Yes. In fact, I got the name of some of your old friends and managed to look them up, they were pleasantly surprised to hear you invited them.” Nancy answered his question.

“I did?”

“Yes, you did. Well, actually I did.” Liz smiled. Max could do nothing but smile at his girlfriend.

“Thank you. Wow! I haven’t seen them in a long time.”

“I know. I thought it would be fun.” Liz smiled and hoped that Max wouldn’t be upset with her for going through his address book for the names. She was very surprised to see how many girls names were in the book, but decided to push the jealously aside. She had him and she knew it.

They sat discussing tonight’s events over breakfast. Afterwards Jeff and Max left to take Max to his driving test.

****

“Mom, he’s not going to like it.” Liz stated nervously. Max was going to hate his present. She could have gotten him something better, nicer, and more meaningful.

“No, he won’t. He’ll love it. I don’t know why you try so hard Liz. Max is a simple kind of guy.”

“I know. It’s just that he always makes everything so special for me.” Liz shrugged her shoulders and crossed her room pulling out Max’s birthday present.

“The watch is perfect, Liz. You had an inscription put in it right?” Nancy asked. She didn’t know what the inscription said, but knowing Liz it was something very meaningful.

“Yes. I hope he likes it.”

“No worries. Now you need to get dressed because I’m sure that Isabel and Maria will be here shortly. I wonder where your father and Max are? Surely he already took his driving test.”

“Oh no!” Liz turned around, eyes wide and mouth open.

“What?!” Nancy was somewhat startled by her daughter’s outburst.

“What if he failed? Oh God! Mom, what if Max failed the test and he doesn’t want to come home cause he thinks I’ll be disappointed?”

“Oh honey, I honestly don’t think that Max could have failed the test. He was more than prepared for it.”

“I know but…”

“Nancy! Liz!” Jeff shouted from downstairs.

“Okay Mom, try to act indifferent. If he didn’t pass it’s okay, he can take it again.” Liz tried to calm herself. She would carry a smile no matter what.

They both descended the stairs and Liz saw the glum look on Max and her father’s face. Damn it! She knew it! It was okay; she would make him feel special no matter what.

“Hi baby.” Liz smiled and stood in front of him.

“Hi.” Max didn’t look her in the eyes, she was right. This was bad. He couldn’t be so glum on his birthday.

“So, are you hungry?” Max shook his head. Jeff stepped away and gave them a moment. He stood next to his wife and just watched the two teens.

“Did you want to take a walk?” Liz asked hopefully. She almost asked him if he wanted to take a drive, which would have been so insensitive.

“No.”

“What do you want to do then?” She didn’t know what to say next, hopefully he would just tell her.

Max lifted his head and a small smile played on his lips. Then he raised his left hand and dangled keys in front of her face. Liz’s eyes grew wide.

“I’d like to take you for a drive.” Liz slapped his chest jokingly.

“Loser! I was so afraid you didn’t pass and I didn’t want to upset you.” Max pulled her into his arms and kissed her forehead gently. Knowing full well her parents were watching.

“I know. I’m sorry but it was your father’s idea.” Jeff ducked his head.

“Daddy! I should have known!” Jeff and Nancy both burst out laughing.

“Mom! You knew?” Nancy nodded.

“How could you?! You are all so wrong!” They all burst out laughing moments later.

“So Miss Parker, how about that spin?”

“Sure, who’s car are we taking?”

“Max’s.” Jeff answered from behind her. Her eyes grew wide once again.

“You got a car? Oh my God!” Liz jumped and snatched the keys from Max’s hands and ran out the front door.

“I think she’s more excited about the car than you Max.”

“I think you’re right.” Max and Jeff exchanged a smile before Max turned to leave.

****

“Where are we going?” Liz asked as she leaned her head against the seat.

“It’s a surprise.” Max smiled as they continued down the highway.

When the arrived, he put the Jeep in park before hopping out. Liz sat in silence, she knew where she was, she just didn’t know why. Max approached her side and helped her out.

“Max?”

“It’s okay. There’s someone I want you to meet.” He smiled softly and led her down a gravel path.

He released her hand a few feet away from his destination. Liz stood behind him and waited until he called for her. She watched as he placed a bouquet of flowers down and then kneeled in front of the rose colored headstone.

“Hi Mom. I miss you. It’s my birthday and I got my driver’s license today, I’m sure you knew that already.” He smiled to himself.

“I’ve been meaning to come here and tell you all about her. She’s the one Mom. You told me it existed and I didn’t believe you, but I know it’s true. I love her, she’s the only one I ever want to be with. I wish you got to meet her, I know you would have loved her. I’m sorry I took so long to bring her here, it’s just so hard to come here because I don’t want you to be here…I…want you to be standing next to me, I want to be able to wrap my arms around you and tell you how much I love you, Mom.” Max swiped the tears from his eyes. He took in a deep breath and kissed her headstone, then turned and reached for Liz.

She was nervous, she had never been to the cemetery before, she didn’t know what to do. But when she saw Max turn to her and reach his hand out to her, all thought left her mind except that he needed her, and she would be there for him.

With their hands locked, Liz peered at the headstone of Diane Marjorie Evans. She drew in a ragged breath and Max squeezed her hand reassuringly.

“Liz, I’d like you to meet my mother. I wish it was different.” Liz turned to Max and pulled him into an embrace when he broke down.

“Shh, it’s okay Max. Thank you for sharing this with me.” He pulled away and swiped his eyes and watched as Liz kneeled down in front of his mother’s grave. Liz reached out and traced the letters on the tomb, then placed her bouquet of flowers down on the earth.

“Hello Mrs. Evans. I guess you know who I am by now. My mom and Max have told me all about you. They told me what a wonderful person you were, how kind you were to everyone and how much you loved your son. I knew you were special just from what my mother told me, but Max he is your true legacy. He is the most selfless person I’ve ever met, and his heart…it’s perfection. The way he knows how to love someone, I know that came from you. I guess what I’m trying to say is, thank you. Thank you for bringing him to me, thank you for allowing him to love the way he does. I can’t imagine a world without him in it.” Liz was in complete tears as was Max who had kneeled down behind her and wrapped his arms around her crying.

“I love you, Liz. I will love you until my last breath.”

“I love you, Max. Until the day I die, I will love you and only you.” Liz turned and Max pulled her into a tight embrace and kissed her softly.

Just then a gent breeze floated around them, and Max knew, as did Liz, that Diane Evans had heard every word.

****

“So are you loving your birthday so far?” Liz asked as she wrapped her arms around Max’s neck and they swayed to the music.

“I honestly don’t think there is a word to describe how great this day has been.” Max smiled and kissed her lips softly. They had the attention of everyone in the room. Max knew it wasn’t him they were staring at, but his beautiful girlfriend. She looked like an angel to him.

The dress she wore was all white and layered with sheer material; she appeared to be floating every time she walked. She was his angel, he thought with a smile on his face.

“Kiss me Max.” Liz leaned up and waited for him to fulfill her request.

This could be it
I think I’m in love

“Anything you want.” Max leaned in and sealed their lips.

It’s love this time
It just seems to fit
I think I’m in love
This love is mine

“I love you.” Max whispered into her ear.

I can see you with me when I’m older
All my lonely nights are finally over
You took the weight of the world off my shoulders

“And I love you.” Liz whispered out to him. And their lips came together again.

Oh when you kiss me, I know you miss me
And when you’re with me, the world just goes away
The way you hold me
The way you show me
That you adore me
Oh, when you kiss me

“Did you like your present?” Liz asked softly looked up into his eyes.

“I loved it.”

“Did you read the inscription?

“Yes.”

“And?”

“I loved it.”

You are the one
I think I’m love
Life has begun
I can see the two us together
I know I’m gonna be with you forever
Love couldn’t be any better (the world just goes away)

“Tell me what it said.” Liz knew of course but she loved it when he said it. She had asked him at least three times already.

Max leaned in and pulled her closer, brought his lips to her ear and told her what it said.

I can see you with me when I’m older
All my lonely nights are finally over
You took the weight of the world off my shoulders (the world just goes away)

“It really does exist…Soulmates Max and Liz.” Liz smiled and pulled back slightly to kiss him once again.

When you kiss me
I know you miss me
And when you’re with me
The world just goes away
The way you hold me

“We’re perfect for each other.” She smiled.

“Yes we are.”

Oh, the world just goes away…when you kiss me

A/N - Thank you guys so much for the amazing feedback!!! Now here's the next part...I hope you like it!!!

Chapter 22

“Mom, how long are you going to be gone for?” Liz asked as she entered her parent’s bedroom.

Nancy stopped packing to address her daughter, “Just three days, then we’ll be back.” Liz nodded and took a seat on her parent’s bed.

“What are you and Max up to today?”

“We’re going to the fair.”

“Oh that sounds fun!” Nancy looked up and saw a smile on her daughters face.

“Yes. Everyone is going. I can’t wait.” Liz jumped off the bed to help her mother out.

“Why are you going anyway?”

“You know how it is. The only way to get money out of rich old men, is through their wife’s.” Nancy laughed softly.

“Really?”

“Yes. They guard their checkbooks with their life, except when it comes to their wife’s, they would do anything to make them happy. So your father needs money to fund his next project and that’s where I come in.” Liz smiled, she knew her mother loved going to the parties and meeting new people.

“Have fun Mom and remember to smile Daddy!” Liz kissed her parent’s goodbye a couple of hours later.

“You too honey. See you in a few days Max.”

“Bye.” They both watched as the car pulled away and the second the gates closed Max was all over Liz.

“Max!”

“Sorry…I just need you.” Liz smiled; she was glad that he was expressing himself so openly.

“Hmm, it feels good to be needed.” Max began to kiss her neck and wrapped his arms around her and walked them over to the living room couch. They both fell onto it and laughed out loud at the silliness of the situation.

“It feels like it’s been forever, and it’s only been a week.” Max laughed out.

“I know.” Liz said sitting beside him stroking his arm gently.

Max turned and looked down into her eyes and she saw the urgent need in her eyes as well.

“It’s going to have to be quick, we have to get out of here.” Max stated as he began unbuttoning her shirt.

“I know.” Liz helped him with her shirt and then laid down on her back, pulling him down against her.

She reached between them and unbuttoned his pants and pulled them down over his hips. All the while their lips sought out each others hungrily he nibbled on her sweet lips. He then pulled his erection free and positioned himself at her already moist center and pushed through.

“Max!” Liz moaned out as he filled her body completely, stretching her to the limit.

“Liz…God you feel so good….I just can’t…get enough.” Max panted out against her lips as he drove into her steadily building a friction that would soon take them over the edge.

Their bodies rocked together and soon they both felt their release, it washed over them and the urgency they felt moments ago faded into the background. This time Max took her slowly, softly and kissed her thoroughly until their second release came.

“I wonder if it will always be this intense?” Liz asked as she pulled her clothes back into place.

“I hope it is.” Max said as he buttoned his pants.

“Hmm…I can’t imagine it would get worse.” Liz purred into his ear.

“M-me either. We better go or we will never leave this room.” Liz giggled and followed Max out the house.

****

Two weeks later

“So who’s the new girl?” Maria asked as she stopped in front of Liz’s locker.

“Oh, her name is Serena Winters. I have two classes with her and I know Max has a few with her too.” Liz answered nonchalantly.

“She’s gorgeous aren’t you worried?”

“No, why?”

“Liz the girl is a knockout! She’s tall and damn she looks like a model. Do you think she’s a model?”

“Who’s a model?” Isabel asked as she approached.

“The new girl.”

“Really? I mean yeah I could see how, but what is she doing here then?”

“I don’t know. But I need to find out.”

Liz rolled her eyes as she stood between her two friends, who by the way were already placing the girl in the Victoria’s Secret Fall runway show.

“Hey sexy.” Liz felt all giddy inside when she heard his voice.

“Hi baby.”

“Oh please! None of the gushy shit!” Max and Liz both rolled their eyes in exasperation. Just last period Michael was inhaling Maria’s lips.

“Anyway…back to the new girl.”

“Serena?” Max asked.

“Yes. Maria and Isabel think she’s a model.” Liz answered trying to fill him in on the latest gossip.

“Oh. Well I talked to her and she’s not a model. In fact she just moved here from a small town in Iowa and she’s really nice.” Max decided to offer his two cents.

“Aww, are you making nice with the new girl?” Maria asked smirking at a blushing Max.

“No I was just…”

“Giving her the idea that she could get into your pants!”

“What?!” Both Liz and Max cried out.

“I did not! I was just being nice.”

“Max, in case you missed the fucking blimp, you are a Grade A piece of ass, any girl would kill to take you to bed, you can’t be all nicey, nicey with them. They are vultures who are looking for their next meal.” Liz had to giggle at Maria’s words, and Max was speechless he didn’t know what to say to that.

“Max, it’s okay. Maria is just overacting again. I’m sure she’s really nice.”

Max thanked her and smiled. “We’re gonna be late for our last class.” Max pulled Liz with him.

“I still wonder what her story is.” Maria just didn’t let it go did she, Isabel thought.

“Come on Gossip Queen, we’re gonna be late.” Isabel dragged her to their class.

Nancy was trying to get the house in order. It seemed as though even though she had two maids, things were just getting out of hand. Everything was so unorganized.

“Mrs. Parker, I will be doing the laundry shortly, should I retrieve Miss. Parker’s items from her room?” The maid queried already knowing the answer she would receive.

“No, that’s fine Susan. I will get them and bring them to you.” Nancy smiled and climbed the stairs. She opened her daughter’s bedroom door, crossed the room quickly and entered her bathroom.

Just as she suspected the basket was completely full. She bent down and picked up some clothing that appeared to have fallen from the top of the pile. Nancy’s hair was getting in the way so she stood and turned searching the vanity for something to tie her hair back.

“Ah ha!” Nancy reached for the hair clip but something caught her eye instead. She knew she shouldn’t look but she just wanted to make sure.

It was Liz’s birth control pack. She had been on it well over four weeks, which meant she should be on a new pack. Nancy lifted the lid on the package and was shocked to find at least ten pills still untouched. This wasn’t right, she did the math in her head, even if Liz started a new pack she should only be on the second or third pill if anything. So why was Nancy standing in her daughters bathroom holding a birth control pack with that many pills left?

“Oh God!” Nancy frantically began searching for another pack, the doctor had given her two sample packs, which meant that she should NOT find another one. After looking, Nancy was beginning to calm down until she looked under the sink.

She fell to her knees and grasped the package to her chest. There in her hands was a full pack of birth control pills, which meant that Liz wasn’t taking them the way she was supposed to. Nancy swallowed thickly and tried not to let the tears fall, but she was defenseless to stop it.

If she was right, which she hoped somehow she wasn’t, it was very likely that her baby was going to have a baby.

****

“Mom! I’m home!” Liz announced as soon as she entered the house.

“Liz…I need to talk to you…” Nancy said quickly as she entered the living room. Her mind was still reeling over what she found a few hours ago.

“Oh! Hello.” Nancy stopped in her tracts when she saw a very beautiful young woman standing next to her daughter.

“Hi.”

“Mom, this is Serena. Serena this is my mom, Nancy.” After the introductions, Liz lead Serena into the kitchen for something to drink.

“Oh, Mom you wanted to talk to me?”

“Y-yes but it can wait.” No it couldn’t. Nancy thought she might actually combust if she didn’t confront her daughter, but they had a guest and she would have to wait.

“I’m just going to go upstairs for a few minutes. It was nice meeting you Serena.”

“You too Mrs. Parker.”

“So, how do you like school so far?” Liz asked as she took a seat beside Serena at the kitchen table.

“I love it so far. Everyone has been really nice, which is a change for me.”

“Has anyone caught your eye yet?” Liz asked, she hung around Maria and Isabel for far too long obviously.

“Yes! Oh Liz, this guy I have three classes with him. He is drop dead gorgeous. I mean hot, isn’t a good enough to describe him. Perfect, sexy and just beautiful that would be more like it.” Liz laughed at Serena’s expression.

“Have you talked to him yet?”

“Yes! Oh he actually approached me and I thought I was going to die. His voice is so smooth and wow!” Liz wondered who Serena was talking about and decided to find out if she knew his name.

“Yes, his name is…”

“Hello!” Liz jumped out of the chair and ran into the living room to greet her boyfriend.

“Hello to you too, sexy.” Max kissed her lips and pulled her close.

“What took you so long?” Liz asked as she released her death grip on him.

“I told you I had a meeting with the guidance counselor about my schedule for next year.”

“Oh, that’s right I forgot.” Liz smiled and Max placed his palms against her cheek and was about to kiss her soft lips again.

“Shit!” Liz hissed out.

“What?” Max was confused; he wanted to kiss her, why was she moving away?

“Serena!”

“Serena?”

“Yes, she’s in the kitchen.”

“Oh, well then let’s go.” Max pulled her with him.

“Hi, Max.” Serena was very shocked to see the exact person she was just talking to Liz about.

“Hi Serena.”

“What are you doing here?” She wondered what he was doing at the Parker’s house.

“I live here.” He chuckled to himself and crossed the room to grab a glass of water. Serena watched him intently, and this did not go unnoticed by Liz. Liz now had a good idea of who Serena was just talking about.

“Oh…I didn’t know…”

“How would you?” Max shrugged his shoulders and sought out his lovely girlfriend.

“I’m going to take a shower and then we can get everyone together for later, okay?” Max asked never breaking eye contact with her.

“Sounds good.” Max leaned in and kissed her lips softly then rested his forehead against hers.

“Love you.”

“Love you, too. Now go take a shower!” Liz smacked him away gently.

“Later Serena!” Max called out as he ran up the stairs.

Serena’s eyes grew wide, she really put her foot in her mouth this time she thought.

“God! I feel so stupid! I’m so sorry Liz.” Serena was mortified.

“It’s okay. That’s the reaction most girls have when it comes to Max, but I’m used to it.” Liz reached out her hand and placed it on Serena’s shoulder for comfort.

“I’m still sorry.”

“Don’t be.”

“Liz?”

“Yeah?”

“There’s something I need to tell you. I want to tell you because I don’t want you finding out the wrong way.” Liz was getting a little unnerved by Serena’s words but decided that she really liked the girl and knew they would be great friends.

“Shoot.”

“I have a daughter. Her name is Sophia and she’s a year old.” Serena awaited Liz’s reaction but was surprised by it.

“Wow! Do you have a picture of her?” Liz was not only shocked but she had already did the math in her head, Serena was seventeen, which meant that she had her daughter when she was sixteen. Liz decided once the words left Serena’s mouth that she would not treat her differently. It wasn’t fair or right for that matter.

“Y-yes I do.” Serena pulled out a picture from her purse.

“She’s really beautiful.” Liz smiled.

“Thank you.” Their eyes locked and Liz knew that Serena was thanking her for more than the comment.

****

“I don’t feel good.” Liz had a terrible stomachache.

“Did you over eat?” Max asked as he rubbed her belly softly.

“No. I don’t know maybe I did. Something just didn’t settle in there.” Max laughed at her words; she was always so cute to him.

“I’ll take you upstairs and you can sleep it off okay?”

“Yes. Thank you.”

“Welcome.” He kissed her lips softly and carried her to her room, tucked her in and kissed her goodnight.

Max wasn’t tired yet, so he decided to grab something to drink before heading to his room to watch some television.

“Hello Max.” Max was startled; he didn’t notice Nancy sitting the corner of the kitchen.

“Hi. Can’t sleep?” Max asked as he pulled out a bottle of water from the fridge, cracked it open and sat at the kitchen table across from Nancy.

“Did you know that Liz was on birth control?”

“Yes, she told me.” Max had decided that it was a very bad idea to leave his room. He placed the bottle at his lips and began to drink.

“Did you know that she hasn’t been taking it?”

“What?!” Max choked out and Nancy simply nodded.

“But…s-she told me she was.”

“Yes, Max but she’s not taking it the way she is supposed to.” Nancy saw the worried look on the young man’s face. She knew at that moment that Liz had told him she was using it but she wasn’t being responsible with it and Max was completely blindsided by the knowledge.

“Max, is there any reason why I should be worried?” Nancy asked him seriously and awaited his response.

She didn’t need one because when Max lifted his worried eyes and pale face to hers, she knew at that moment things had just gotten extremely complicated.

Chapter 23

“We need to talk.” Max walked right into her bathroom as soon as he woke up the next morning. He hadn’t slept at all last night.

Liz was just brushing her teeth when he stormed in. “Okay.” Obviously he was very upset about something, but what could it be, she thought.

“Why didn’t you tell me you weren’t taking your birth control?” Max was trying not to overreact but at this point he didn’t know what else to do. This was serious.

“I am,” she defended herself softly. How could he know?

“No! You’re not Liz. I know you’re not. Hell your mother knows you’re not! Why didn’t you tell me? I could have used something, Liz,” he hissed out angrily. Why was she lying to him?

“I’m sorry. I was trying but I kept forgetting and…I should have told you.” Her excuse was pitiful but she honestly didn’t think he would find out, and just how the hell did her mother find out?

“You’re damn right you should have! Liz, do you know what this means?” Max tried his hardest to keep his temper down, but it was a losing battle.

“It doesn’t mean anything, we’ll just be careful and use condoms next time.” Liz moved away from him and backed out of the bathroom. She had never seen him this angry before and she didn’t like it, especially not when it was directed towards her.

“Yes, we will use condoms but that’s not the problem.” Max followed her into her room and watched as she sat on her bed, taking in everything he was saying.

“What’s the problem?” Liz looked up hesitantly; she had decided that she never wanted Max angry with her, ever again.

“Liz, this is serious. You could be pregnant right now and not know it.” Max took a seat beside her. She was already crying and he hated to see her cry. He reached his arms and wrapped it around her shoulders, effectively pulling her against him.

“I’m not Max…I know I’m not,” Liz cried out. However, at that moment she had to ask herself if that was the truth, or if it was what she wanted to be the truth?

“Really?” Hope. That’s what he felt.

“Yes?” She tried to sound confident in her answer, all the while she fighting back the urge to run and hide.

“How? Did you get your period?” Relief. This wasn’t as bad as he…

She didn’t answer.

“Did you?!” He pulled away and began pacing in front of her. This was just getting worse by the minute.

“No…I didn’t…but I’m not late…I don’t think.” Liz mumbled out trying to do the calculations in her head. She had always been irregular and being on the birth control didn’t help. She kept missing a dose and when she remembered she would take it, which only seemed to mess up her cycle even worse.

“Are you kidding me?! You don’t think? Don’t you keep track?!” Max was beyond furious. How could she? She knew better. She was smarter than this.

“Not really.” Liz ducked her face in her hands and began to cry uncontrollably. She messed up big time, and if she was pregnant…she didn’t want to think about that. Not yet.

“Liz…” Max kneeled in front of her and gently pulled her hands away from her face.

“I’m so sorry, Max.” He swiped the tears from her eyes. It broke his heart to see her like this.

“You need to take a test.”

“Okay.”

“Today.”

“Okay.”

“As soon as we get home.”

“Okay.”

“Max…” The uncertainty was vivid in her voice. Did he hate her?

“I’m sorry for yelling, Liz. This is…” He ran a nervous hand through his hair.

“I know. I should have been more careful and I should have told you. I didn’t mean it.” Max pulled her against his chest.

“I know you didn’t. We just have to wait and see.”

****

“Max?” Liz leaned over her desk to grab his attention, but he seemed to be lost in thought. She wanted to tell him how sorry she was. She wanted to ask him how to make it better. She knew better, he probably felt trapped by her. It was in her hands, she made it that way by telling him she was taking the birth control. She kept his worries at bay by lying to him. Even if Max didn’t hate her, she hated herself.

She sat for the remainder of the class just watching him. He didn’t look at her once. Normally he would steal glances at one another, but not today. Maybe not ever again, she shuddered at the thought.

She didn’t know how to make it better, except to take the test and pray that everyone was wrong…including herself.

****

Max couldn’t concentrate if someone paid him to. Liz, his girlfriend, the love of his life could be at that very moment carrying his child.

A part of him was reeling at the thought of a child that would look a little like him and a little like her, but the other part was terrified. He was seventeen, she was sixteen they couldn’t raise a baby.

Panic and fear settled right in his heart. If she was pregnant, he would have someone that would depend on him for everything. What if he failed? He couldn’t, it would be too important.

Time was against him. He turned to the clock and saw another five minutes before the bell rang announcing that the school day was over.

He ached to look at her, to ease her worries, but how could he when he didn’t know what was happening?

****

After school, Max drove her to the drug store to buy a test. Which she couldn’t do, therefore he went in with her and purchased it. Max was now sitting on the edge of his bathtub waiting for Liz to settle herself enough to take the test.

“I can’t do it.” His head snapped up. Why was she making everything harder than it already was, he thought.

“Yes. You can,” he reassured her firmly.

“No! I can’t! Max…I…can’t,” she swallowed back her tears. Liz already knew the answer. She didn’t need a test.

“Liz…” He knew she was scared but they didn’t have any other choice.

“I’m scared Max, what if I’m pregnant?” Liz asked sliding down against the wall, holding the test in her hands. Max crossed the room and took a seat next to her.

“Then we’ll deal with it, Liz.” He reached out his arm and wrapped it around her shoulders for comfort.

“Did you know that Serena has a daughter?” Max just nodded. Serena had told him today at school. He was shocked but saw how much Serena loved her daughter by the way her eyes lit up when she talked about Sophia.

“I’m not ready. It’s too soon.”

“Maybe, but just because you’re not ready doesn’t mean that’s going to stop it from happening.” Max finished softly.

“Okay. I’ll take it. I’m ready.” Liz stood and asked him to leave the room until she was done. Max stood and kissed her cheek softly before closing the door behind him.

He paced his bedroom for what seemed like an eternity until he heard the door open. This was it. He took a deep breath and turned to her.

He couldn’t read her face, so he waited until she was ready to talk. Liz crossed the room and sat on the edge of his bed.

“I’m pregnant, Max. We are going to have a baby.” Liz let out a ragged breath she didn’t realize she was holding. Max was speechless but managed to move his feet enough to kneel in front of her. She looked so fragile and small, more so than he had ever seen her. She was pregnant. He was going to be a father. Her parents were going to kill him. He didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. He didn’t have long to contemplate it, because her next words felt like a dagger through his heart.

“Maybe we shouldn’t have it.”

“What?!” She couldn’t have meant that.

“Think about it Max. I’m not ready to be a mother, we aren’t ready to be parents.” Liz was trying to be as logical as possible.

“You don’t mean that.” He knew what she was saying was true, but the alternative was not an option for him.

“What about school?”

“We can still go it will just take a little longer and…”

“No! It’s my life that’s ruined!” Liz jumped up and began pacing back and forth. She couldn’t do this. She trapped Max into this, not intentionally but it was done nevertheless, now she had to make it better.

“No. It’s our life, Liz. We are in this together.” Max knew she didn’t mean what she was saying.

“Max, I’ve already made up my mind,” she turned to him and swallowed back her tears. Her heart was racing and she felt sick. She knew she would hurt him with those words, even though she didn’t really mean them if she thought about it.

“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?! It’s my baby too, Liz. Don’t take that from me,” Max pleaded with her.

“I’m sorry. I made a mistake Max, and I should have told you. I didn’t mean to trap you into this. It’s the only way I can make it better.”

“Better! You think getting rid our baby is better?! Sorry Liz but I don’t see it that way!” Max was furious. He couldn’t stand being in the room with her any longer. Who was she? Yes, he was terrified but that didn’t mean he was thinking irrationally. What gave her the right to choose for him?

“Max, it’s my choice. It’s my body and I can do what I want.” Words left her mouth without logical thought. She was still trying to wrap her mind around the fact that she was sixteen and pregnant.

“You know what, Liz? You’re right! It’s your body, but it’s my baby and I will never forgive you if you do it! Ever!” Max stormed out of the room; he was disgusted with the entire situation.

He knew she would panic but to actually say she was willing to get rid of their baby because it was a mistake was too much for him. He knew he had no choice, if she decided to do it, that he had no say in it. But it didn’t mean that he had to sit around and wait for her to decide.

He needed to think, clear his mind.

****

After Max left over two hours ago, Liz crawled herself into his bed and cried. How could she have been that cruel? She didn’t want to get rid of their baby. She didn’t know why she even said it. She was just afraid of what her parents; friends and the kids at school were going to say. It was all too much at once. She wasn’t strong enough to handle all of that. Above all else, she hurt Max, badly. He was so hurt by her words and she knew it. She wanted to run after him, but knew it would be better to give him some time.

“Liz?” Nancy peaked her head into Max’s open bedroom door.

“Mom!” Liz tried to wipe her eyes but it was too late. Nancy had overheard most of the conversation, not intentionally but she was on her way to her daughter’s room to talk to her and then she heard the yelling.

“You okay?” Nancy knew she wasn’t but she didn’t want to let on that she knew what was going on. She wanted Liz to come to her.

“No. Max hates me, Mom.” Liz couldn’t stop the sobs that wracked her body. Nancy sat down beside her and pulled her close.

“No. He doesn’t hate you. I honestly don’t think it’s possible…”

“Yes he does! You didn’t see his face! He was so disgusted with me…and…God it hurts so much,” Liz cried out.

“Why Liz? Why do you think that?” Nancy decided to see if her daughter would breakdown and tell her.

“Because…I…we…I can’t tell you.” Liz turned her head away. She wanted to tell her mother. She wanted her mother to make it better, but Liz knew deep down the only person that could make the situation better was her.

Nancy watched the emotions play across her face daughter’s face and tried to steel herself for the storm ahead, because she was now completely certain that her sixteen-year-old daughter was pregnant.

Chapter 24

Max returned about an hour later and found Liz lying in his bed. He was tempted to wake her up and tell her to go to her own room, but he couldn’t be like that with her. Instead he removed his shoes and socks and laid down next to her. His bedside lamp was still on and when he looked at her face, he saw the tear stains and his heart broke.

He loved her more than she could even imagine and when she told him she didn’t want their baby, something inside of him snapped. She didn’t want it. She was rejecting a part of him and he couldn’t deal with it.

“Max…” Liz rolled onto her back still sound asleep. A small smile played on his lips and he allowed his eyes to travel down her slender body. When his eyes landed on her flat exposed tummy he couldn’t resist, he reached out his hand and placed it on her warm flesh. His baby, their baby laid there. He scooted down and rested his head on her chest, gently rubbing circles across her belly.

Liz felt him the moment his hands touched her. Tears slipped from the corners of her eyes and she didn’t want to break the moment, but she had things that needed to be said.

“Max,” She attempted but her voice was hoarse. Max heard her and didn’t move. She had something to say, and if it was that she still didn’t want their baby, he would have no choice but to accept it. He closed his eyes and waited.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean what I said and how I said it. I love you, and I will love our baby even more.” Max’s eyes and body snapped up to meet hers. Did she mean it? Or was she saying it because it’s what he wanted?

“Don’t do it for me. I don’t want you to regret your decision in keeping it,” he finished flatly.

“The only decision I would regret is if I got rid of our baby. I want it Max and I want you. We’re going to be a family now, Max. I swear to you I didn’t mean it, I just panicked and…hmm.” He leaned up quickly and cupped the back of her head, drawing her close for a deep kiss. Their tears mingled and their heartbeats raced.

“I love you, Max. I love our baby. Forgive me?”

“Forgiven. I love you, Liz. We’re going to be okay. I promise. I will do everything in my power to make sure we’re okay.” Max promised and Liz believed every word. Max didn’t know how to let her down.

They laid in silence for a few minutes, their hands locked and resting on her abdomen.

“We have to tell your parents.”

“I know, but can’t we wait?”

“Until when? You’re showing?”

”Well…”

“Liiz…”

“I know. But can we at least wait until the dinner party is over?”

“Deal.”

“Do you hate me, Max?” Liz asked after a few moments of silence.

“No. Never.”

“But you told me you would never forgive me if I did it, did you mean it?” Max couldn’t lie to her.

“Yes. I won’t apologize for it either, Liz. I love you, but we have someone that is more important than you or me, and if you did it. I don’t know how I would have been able to get past it and be with you,” he answered her honestly. There was no doubt that he would still love her, but he wasn’t sure if they’re relationship would have survived it.

“Right. I know,” she finished softly evading her eyes from him.

“Liz,”

“It’s okay Max. You’re right and I understand, this is our baby a part of you and a part of me, I could never destroy that…never.”

“I know.”

“You want me to take you to your room?” Max asked as he felt sleep creep up on him.

“No. I want to stay here with you,” Liz settled deeper against his pillows. Max leaned up and pulled her into his arms.

“I don’t want you anywhere else but my arms. Night Liz. I love you.”

“I love you too, Max. Night.”

****

“Jeff, we need to talk,” Nancy decided she couldn’t keep this from her husband, hoping that her daughter would break the news. She needed to prepare her husband for it. They were getting ready for their dinner party and the kids were all in the backyard, this was her opportunity.

“Okay, Nance. Is there something wrong?” Jeff turned worried eyes towards his wife. She had been acting funny for the past two days.

“Yes. Jeff you know how I put Liz on birth control?” Those were words he never wanted to hear in his presence, let alone think of why his baby girl needed it.

“Yes.”

“Well our daughter hasn’t apparently been taking it the way she’s supposed to,” Nancy looked at her husband and was practically screaming inside for him to figure it out. But he didn’t.

“Okay…and I should be worried?” He hoped to God not.

“Yes.”

“Mom! Dad! Some of the guests have started to arrive!” They heard their daughter yell down the hall to them. They both swallowed thickly.

“I’m not ready for this, Nancy.”

“Neither am I.” They held each other tightly. A moment later their daughter interrupted them once again.

****

“You okay, baby?” Max leaned in and whispered his question to her.

“No. What if they throw me out?” Max laughed to himself. If anyone was getting thrown out today it would be him, he thought.

“They won’t do that, Liz.”

“Right. You’re right.” Liz was trembling and Max decided that he needed to calm her down or she would bolt at the first sight of her parents.

“How about we take a walk?”

“That sounds perfect!” Liz smiled and took his hand as he led her out to the backyard.

****

Jeff and Nancy had watched their daughter all night. Still somewhere in the back of their minds they held onto a hope that they were wrong.

“I don’t believe it! She’s just seventeen. I do not want my daughter to go anywhere near her,” Mrs. Sanchez hiss out and that caught the attention of both Jeff and Nancy.

“I’m sorry, but whom are you speaking about?” Nancy queried softly.

“That Serena Winters girl. She has a one-year-old daughter, can you believe that?! That is just atrocious.” Jeff and Nancy both swallowed quickly and looked at one another with the same fear.

“Why wouldn’t you want your daughter to go near her? Pregnancy is not contagious,” Nancy bit out angrily. It had finally hit her that if her daughter was pregnant, then people would treat her differently and she would not tolerate it in her home. Above all else, she knew Serena, she was a good friend to Liz and to Max, and she would not allow the young girl to be disrespected in her presence.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me. So answer the question,” Nancy’s anger was boiling over.

“Well obviously the girl is very sexually active and I don’t need my daughter taking advice from her.” They were beginning to draw a crowd and honestly Nancy could care less.

“Advice?! You think Serena is handing out free sex advice? That’s a joke. In fact the poor girl has had to move to a different state to get away from people like you and comments like that! I for one know the girl and would always welcome her in my home, which is more than I can say for you!” Nancy knew things were getting out of hand, but how dare someone make comments about a sweet young girl when they didn’t even know her, or the struggles she’s had to face?

By this time, the music had stopped and all the guests were watching and listening to the exchange between the two women. Everyone including Max and Liz.

“Well I never!”

“Now you have! I would appreciate it, if you would leave.”

“You should look at yourself in the mirror Nancy, allowing your daughter to date a boy who lives under the same roof! It’s any wonder how she’s not pregnant already!”

“That. Is. Enough! You will not disrespect my wife and you sure as hell will not disrespect my daughter or her boyfriend! You Mrs. Sanchez may leave and please loose our number!” Jeff roared out, causing Liz to gasp. She had never seen her father that upset. She swallowed thickly. Wait until he hears what I have to say, she thought.

“Very well.” Mrs. Sanchez and her husband left shortly thereafter and Serena stepped forward from the crowd, carrying her daughter.

“Mr. and Mrs. Parker, I’m so sorry for that…I shouldn’t have come,” Serena looked down and began moving towards to the door.

“Nonsense, you are more than welcome as well as your daughter. Don’t let people like that destroy you.” Nancy pulled the young girl into an embrace knowing that in a few short months it might very well be her daughter she would have to defend to everyone.

A battle both Jeff and Nancy were more than willing to take on.

****

“You ready?”

“No.”

“I know baby, but we have to tell them.”

“Right.” Liz reached out to open her bedroom door later that evening.

“Liz?”

“Yes?”

“I’ll never leave you, you know that right?” Max stopped behind her. He needed her to know that no matter what her parents said, he wouldn’t abandon her.

“I know,” Liz smiled and reached out her hand to him.

They walked down the staircase hand in hand. When the reached the final step they turned to one another and smiled. They took the last step together.

“Mom. Dad. Max and I need to talk to you,” Liz said hesitantly. Max squeezed her hand reassuringly as they took a seat on the couch across from her parents.

Jeff and Nancy tried to brace themselves for what was coming, which was beginning to feel impossible. Jeff was outraged. He wanted to yell until this went away. He knew he was deluding himself, that wouldn’t change what already was. His baby girl was having a baby.

“Go ahead honey,” Nancy tried to approach the situation delicately, knowing how her husband already felt.

“I honestly don’t know how to say this,” she bit back her sob, but the tears still fell. “I’m pregnant.”

The room was silent.

Too silent.

This was so much worse than they thought.

“Mom? Dad?” Liz asked tentatively. Did they not hear her?

“How?” Jeff spoke for the first time. His voice was firm, unwavering and it terrified the hell out of Max. Max wasn’t so sure he should have been present for the conversation. In fact, he was already calculating how many steps it would take him to bolt out the front door.

“How? I…well….we…”

“Liz. I know how, I meant how could you let it happen?” Jeff looked his daughter in the face, he saw her fear and he hated it.

Liz was about to answer but Nancy had a few questions of her own. She couldn’t remain calm any longer. “Why didn’t you take the pills Liz? Why? It was so simple, one a day, everyday! I just…I can’t understand why you wouldn’t take them?”

“I made a mistake…”

“A mistake?! Liz, you are sixteen and you’re pregnant! You are going to have a baby and you don’t even know how to take care of yourself!” Jeff roared. He was angrier than he originally thought. Max however couldn’t sit by and let her take all the blame.

“Jeff, Nancy. I know your upset, very upset. We didn’t mean for it to happen and…”

“Max, I should be furious with you…and I am if I think about it. But what I can’t understand is why you aren’t angry with her?” Jeff should hate this boy. Hell he knew the reason for his daughter being pregnant was because of him, but he knew that his daughter put Max into the situation unknowingly.

Max understood Jeff’s question, but Jeff didn’t know the entire story. He sure as hell didn’t know how many times they had slept together without any form of protection. For that, Max would have to count himself just as careless as Liz.

“I was, but I know she didn’t do it on purpose, she would never do that. And to be honest this could have happened even if she took the pills the way she was supposed to,” Max spoke up a little more confidently. It didn’t matter what her parents thought, he loved Liz and they were going to have this baby one way or another, nothing would stop them.

“Yes I realize that, but the odds of the birth control not working was slim. If she was more responsible about it she wouldn’t have…” Nancy didn’t get to finish her sentence because Liz was now standing between them all crying.

“I know! You don’t have to remind me! I ruined Max’s life, my life…yours! I know you don’t have to tell me!”

“Liz,” Max reached up to her but she backed away.

“No. You can’t make this better. You can’t make them not hate me. No one can.” Another loud sob escaped past her lips and she tried to muffle it with her hand.

“Honey…” Nancy tried.

“No!” Liz turned and ran upstairs to her room. It was too much. The disgust in their faces was too much for her.

“Liz!” Max stood at the bottom of the stairs watching her run. He wanted to do nothing more than to go after her but there was something he needed to say first.

“You should hate me. I got her pregnant. She didn’t do it herself,” Max turned to face Jeff and Nancy.

“We are well aware of that,” Jeff stated sarcastically.

“So hate me, don’t hate her,” he finished softly. His voice giving away his emotions that he fought so hard to conceal.

“We don’t hate her, or you Max. We are trying to understand, but…” Nancy tried to explain.

“You can’t. I know. When you told me about Liz not taking the pills, my heart sunk. I had so many plans for us. Graduate high school, go to college, get married and have children, in that order,” Max finished meekly.

“We know. It’s just a shock for us.” Nancy stated gently. She knew this was a lot for a seventeen year old to handle. And Max had already been through so much in his life.

“I know it is. But there’s something I have to tell you, so that you know where I’m coming from.” Nancy and Jeff stood watching this young boy transform into a young man right before their very eyes.

“Go ahead, Max.” Nancy whispered out holding onto her husband’s hand tightly. Max looked them both in the eyes before starting.

“I love her. I will always love her. She is carrying my baby and for that I will forever be grateful for her strength to do so. She had a lot of options but she chose to keep it and to stay with me. I will finish high school, I will go to college and I will marry her. She will finish high school, and college and she will become a mother and I will still be right by her side.” Max’s voice never faltered. He was completely determined for them to understand that no matter what they say, he would always support Liz. She was the most important person in his life, that and his unborn child.

“What are you saying Max?” Jeff asked, still moved by the young man’s words.

“It’s not what I’m saying, its what I’m asking.”

“What are you asking?” Nancy asked anxiously.

“I’m asking if you want to be present for all of that?” Max pressed his lips together, turned on his heels and made his way upstairs to Liz.

“Jeff,” Nancy tried to bite back her tears.

“I know Nance. We have a choice to make. I’m still not happy, but we can’t stop what’s happening. She’s going to have a baby and Max is right,” Jeff laughed to himself. How was it possible for a seventeen year old to be so wise?

“We can either be with them or against them. I’m not ready to loose her.” Nancy turned a tearful gaze towards her husband.

“Me either.” He pulled his wife into his arms and they stood there thinking, how quickly their lives have changed.

A/N - Okay first of all I want to just post this on here cause I didn't last week. I wanted to just say how much it means to me to see my name on the nominations this time around. There are so many talented author's on this board and I just wanted to say to all of you that read, nominated or just lurk; Thank you. It means a lot that you like the stories I come up with for you to enjoy and appreciate the time I take in doing so  Now with that said...go VOTE

On to some feedback cause that last part left some of you divided, which is understandable. All I ask is that you remember how old Liz is, and the life she's led thus far. Max's life was completely different as most of you know, so just keep that tid bit in the back of your minds.

Ellie - Wow, thank you for the compliments glad you like! Oh and as soon as I'm done posting this...I'm gonna shoot you a PM...gotta ask you something and you know what about

DramastarOF06 - Hi! Thank you and I'm so happy that you think it's realistic cause that's what I'm going for. I don't think I'm at the age where I could swing a *teeny bopper* version of this lol!

dreamer destiny - I completely understand where you are coming from with your anger at Liz. That's the way I wrote it for a reason. Some people don't get my reasons but I do have them lol. Liz is immature and I can't say that this will get better quickly. But thank you for reading!

linliz68 - aww thank you girlie!!

Michelle17 - Thanks!

To_Kiss_A_Frog - I was wondering just when someone would ask me this question. Here's a little fact about the title most of you don't know; the title for this story was actually going to be the title to the Sequel to Second Time Around (which I never ended up writing, but I see it's nominated for fic you'd like to see a sequel too lol) because if you've read that story, that's how I ended it; with Max and Liz's promise of forever. In any event, I used that title for this story instead, as you know. And so I have already referenced the title earlier on in this fic...but it is the basis for what is to come in the future. Just remember I'm a dreamer 100% and so with that said, hope you enjoy this next part! Thank you!

taressa05 - Thank you!

Jason's Lover - Crystal you are cracking me up! Max has stepped up to the plate hasn't he? lol! Thanks!

Behrsgirl1230 - Serena will be very important in both Max and Liz's life...too bad I have yet to write that part LOL!! Thanks!

Chione - Hi! Okay first of all I was  when I saw you were reading. Why, you ask? Cause I just love your writing and I was happy to see you enjoy mine  Secondly, you took the words right out of my mouth, that is exactly what I was trying to get across, so thank you.

hazz - All parent's aren't like that cause...I don't know. LOL! I don't have children but I can honestly say that with everything that I have experienced in my life, this is the kind of parent I would want to be. You can't always be a child's best friend, but you don't have to be their enemy either  Thank you!

su-lyn - Yes having supportive parents are needed in this type of situation. Thank you!

RASaero611 - You're right they won't and thanks!

anonymousarfan - Wow! Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoy and like the characters I have written

flyawayraven - Thank you!!

trueblue - Thanks!

RoswellLover4Ever - Hi! Not sure if I saw you post before, then again I'm slow...What are they going to do? You'll see! Thanks!

kay_b - Kay you are too much...you feel bad...but you hate her...you love her...she irritates you! hahaha!! Thanks!

begonia9508 - I know you're angry...it's not displaced either. But she did *not* get pregnant on purpose to trap Max. It's just that she thinks that he may think that. Thanks!

Emz80m - Thanks Emma!

Liz86000 - I agree with you. Liz is very immature and she does need to progress if she wants to be a mother. I don't think she's reached that point in her life though...what do you think? Thanks!

frenchkiss70 - I swear Tiph! Seriously, do you read minds? Ever since the first first story I ever posted, you have this way of doing this ESP thing with me...quite freaky. Thanks!

FSUMSW94 - La'Shon, thank you again for all your help!! And yeah you already know what's going on. I'm trying to be my muse to sit her ass down and write but she's not listening lol!! Thank you!!

Sweet Liz - Thanks!

cocopucks - All I have to say is your 2 cents was worth so much more than that! Thank you!

NorafanofMaxandLiz - Aww so happy you love Max. He is a keeper...hmm I can't comment on much more than that, sorry lol! Thank you!

Dreamer06 - Yup Teen Pregnancy it is on a silver platter. Thank you!

obsession - Thank you! Your feedback always makes me smile.

cherie - You missy always make me blush with your feedback I don't know why! I'm sure it's just cause I am so happy you enjoy reading...NAH it's cause I love you!! When are we getting a new story? I'm dying for some of your beautiful writing!

Earth2Mama - Oh they know it's not going to be easy...it's getting past that point that's going to be the hard part. Thanks!

Mariael311 - Wow Di...loss for words? lol! Thanks!

BehrObession - You're right they will be helping them as much as possible, but some things have to be done and learned on their own. Thank you!

Bixie - Thanks and BIG *HUGS* for you! You need it, but just remember to keep smiling and *remember*

confusedfool - LOL! If he was like that on the show, then maybe we'd still have one *sigh* Thanks!

AppleJacks - Yeah me either! I'm just as excited since I've only got a few more chapters written lol! I better get to work lol! Thank you!!

rigel - Yup, Liz has some growing up to do. We'll have to see how that all works out won't we? lol! Thanks!

Lurkers- Hope you enjoy and thanks for reading!

Chapter 25

“Liz what are you doing?” He watched as her hair flew around her as she stuffed clothes into her book bag.

“I need to get out of here for a little while, Max. Please,” she pleaded with him. Her tears had not subsided.

He crossed the room and wrapped his arms around her. “Okay. Let me just get some clothes.”

“Don’t bother?” Liz turned and the corners of her mouth formed a small smile.

“You already packed for me?”

“Yes.”

“So you think you know me?”

“I’d like to think so.”

He just smiled and waited until she zipped up the bag before reaching for her hand. “I love you and everything is going to be fine.” He kissed her forehead before they made their way into the hallway.

“I don’t want to see them.” Liz stopped halfway down the stairs.

“I know, just walk straight down the steps and out the front door. Don’t stop.” Liz nodded and continued straight out the door to wait for Max. She was so grateful that he was there for her.

“Max? Where is Liz going?” Nancy asked when she saw her daughter practically run out the front door.

“She needs to get away for a little while. Please, don’t tell me no. I don’t want to go against you or Jeff, but it’s not healthy for her to be this stressed out. I promise I’ll call you as soon as we stop.”

“Max…tell her I love her.”

“I will. Thank you.” Nancy nodded and watched from her doorstep as they drove away.

“Where are they going?” Jeff asked coming to stand behind his wife.

“Liz needed to get away for a little bit.”

“Get away? Where?!”

“Calm down. Max promised to call as soon as they stopped. And he’s right.”

“Right? About what?”

“It’s not good for her to be under all this stress, it’s not good for her or the baby.”

“Wow! I’m going to be a grandfather.” Realization dawned on Jeff in that moment.

“Yes. And I’m going to be a grandmother.”

“You ready?”

“No. But I won’t turn them away.”

“No we won’t. Come on, it’s been a long day, Max will call.” Jeff led his wife upstairs to their room. All they had was time.

****

She had been crying for what seemed hours and Max had tried everything to get her to stop, but nothing worked. His last option was to at least get her body to relax.

He searched through their bag until he found what he was looking for, crossed the room and entered the bathroom of their motel. It was the only place that didn’t check for ID, so they went with it.

He turned on the hot water, and then added a little cold until the temperature was just right. He then poured in some shower gel he grabbed from the bag and began to remove his clothes.

Liz watched him move around the room, looking for something and when he found it he entered the bathroom and closed the door. She then heard the water and she decided to creep up to the door to see what he was doing.

Making a bath for her. The love she felt for him grew in that instant. She decided to pull herself together and crossed the room to turn on the radio next to the bed. She flipped through the stations hoping to find something.

“Perfect!” She crossed the room and opened the bathroom door. She watched him with his eyes closed and his lips parted, his body covered in bubbles and she couldn’t wait to join him.

Only when he heard the door open fully and sound of the song playing on the radio fill the room, did Max open his eyes.

Come to me now
And lay your hands over me
Even if it’s a lie say it will be alright
And I shall believe

Max reached out his arms to her and she removed her dress and stepped into the warm water. She kneeled in front of him and pressed her lips to his.

Broken in two
And I know you’re onto me
That I only come home
When I’m so all alone
But I do believe

“I missed you.” Max whispered softly against her lips, he pushed her hair from her shoulders and wrapped his arms around her.

“Me too.” Liz smiled against his lips and brought him in deeper caressing her tongue gently against his.

That not everything is gonna be the way you think it ought to be
It seems like everything I try to make it right it all comes down on me
Say honestly you won’t give up on me
And I shall believe

No other words passed between the two. Liz allowed Max to caress and kiss her body until she was limp in his arms. They held one another, kissing every inch of exposed skin they could reach until it became too much, they needed one another like they never had before. They needed to feel something real, and the only thing that was real was their love for one another.

Liz crawled into his lap and their bodies joined slowly, they had nothing but time and each other. This was their time and no one could ruin it. After there bodies were spent and dried, Max carried her to their bed and placed the covers over them.

“I loved that song.” Liz whispered out into the darkness.

“Me too, but not as much as I love you. You mean the world to me and I hate to see you hurting.”

“I know, but so long as you’re next to me I’ll be okay.”

“I’ll never leave Liz…never. I’ll always be here for you.” He promised.

“I know.” Liz sealed their lips once again and rolled over to straddle his lap.

“Liz?”

“Max…”

“What are you doing?”

“I’m going to make love to you, again.” She reached down between them and grasped his erection in the palm of her hand and slowly sank herself on him.

“Ah…yeah…” Max moaned out as she began a rhythm above him that would drive him crazy in moments.

“Yes…Max…ah…” She placed the palms of her hands on his strong chest and waited until he lifted his hands to her waist. She threw her head back as her climax approached and Max leaned up to capture her lips.

“You are amazing you know that?” Max mumbled out as he nipped her shoulder.

“No…you are what makes me amazing, never forget that…never.” Liz panted out as her orgasm ripped through her body.

“Max!”

“Yeah…Liz…baby….yeah…” He wrapped his arms around her as his orgasm tore through his body, causing him to shudder uncontrollably.

“God…I feel like I could sleep for days.” Liz giggled out as he rested his head on her chest.

“Hmm…me too.”

“Goodnight Liz.”

“Night Max.”

****

“Hello?” Nancy answered the phone. She and Jeff had yet to fall asleep, they had been waiting on this phone call since their daughter left the house.

“Hi.” Max was nervous and they could tell.

“Is she okay?” Both Jeff and Nancy asked at the same time.

“Yeah. She’s finally asleep and she would kill me if she knew I was calling you.” Max let out a nervous laugh.

“We know. Thank you, Max.”

“Sure.” The silence across the telephone line was deafening. Then suddenly Max spoke up.

“You know all she ever wanted to do was make the both of you proud?” He began softly. He was standing outside, just to be certain Liz would not overhear him.

“We are proud of her and…”

“She feels like the biggest disappointment to you.” Max cut Nancy off. Things needed to be said he realized from them as well, but at the moment he was speaking for Liz.

“Max, she’s not a disappointment to us. We love her, and no matter what we will always be proud of her for the amazing person she is.” Jeff interjected softly. He was tired of being angry, he couldn’t change the past but he could affect the future.

“You need to tell her that or even I won’t be able to help you.”

“What do you mean?” Nancy asked hesitantly.

“You’ll loose her, so you need to decide soon. Because if she comes back and feels as worthless as she feels right now, I won’t allow her to stay there.” Max was pretty shocked by his own words because he was not planning on saying that. When the words left his mouth however, it felt right.

“Max what are you going to do?” Jeff tried to reason with him. “You’re only seventeen and…”

“I know that, but I would rather work four jobs and give up school then to ever have Liz feel anything less than that amazing person she is,” Max stated matter-of-factly.

Jeff and Nancy were silent for a moment; they knew Max was waiting for their decision.

“Jeff, Nancy?”

“Yes, Max?”

“I know she’s your daughter and she is her own person, so she would have to decide what she wants to do in any event. She’s only sixteen and by law she is in your care, custody and control, but I want you to know that when I tell you I love her and would do anything for her I mean it. I know that if my mother were alive, I probably wouldn’t even have Liz and so I have to thank my mother for that, and the both of you. She has given me so much in the time I’ve known her. She doesn’t even realize how hard it was getting up some mornings, but as soon as I saw her beautiful smile I felt like…I could face the world. I can’t do it without her, just like I know she can’t do it without me. No matter what your choice is, if you want me to leave, I’ll go but I can’t leave her. I need her and….”

“Max, we never even thought about you leaving. Ever. Max, we love you, you brought our daughter back to us. You taught us how important family is, and how much we took our daughter for granted. We would never want you to leave. And we know that you love Liz, we can’t imagine her without you.” Nancy spoke for both her and her husband. Max leaving was never an option, ever.

“Me either.” Max breathed a sigh of relief. They really did understand, and for that he was grateful.

“Why don’t you bring Liz home tomorrow morning. We’ll have breakfast together and we’ll talk.”

“Absolutely. Thank you.”

“No, thank you, Max. Now get some rest.”

After Nancy hung up the phone, she turned to her husband. “This is it. Are we agreed?”

Jeff nodded, “I’m not ready to lose my daughter, son and grandchild.” He pulled his wife into his embrace and they sat up the rest of the night discussing future plans.

Chapter 26

“Max can’t we stay here forever?” Liz whined from under her blankets.

“I wish. But no baby, your parents are going to want to see you.” He was pulling his shirt over his head and so he missed his petite girlfriend run past him and into the bathroom.

“Liz?” He looked around and then he heard her in the bathroom. He rushed in and kneeled down next to her.

“You okay?”

“Yeah. I just didn’t feel good all of a sudden.” She smiled sheepishly.

“Morning sickness?” She simply nodded and he helped her to her feet and over to the sink.

A few minutes later she reemerged freshened up and ready to go home.

“Now don’t you look adorable?” Max looked down at her outfit. She had on a short light blue skirt and matching top with the words, “Sexy” written across the front of it in white stones.

“Do I?”

“Yes, always.”

“Yeah, well wait a few more months when I’m as big as a beach ball, we’ll see how adorable you think I am.” Liz walked past him, she didn’t want to think about gaining weight. She would be a blimp and Max wouldn’t even be attracted to her, she already knew it.

Max reached out and pulled her against his body and kissed the tip of her nose. “Liz, if you get as big as a beach ball, I will think you are the most adorable beach ball I’ve ever seen. In fact, if I close my eyes I can picture how damn sexy you’ll be.” Max kissed her temple and then nibbled on her ear.

“Yeah right! We’ll see.”

“Hmm, yes we’ll see. What do I get if I’m right?” Liz pulled away and saw the mischievous glint in his eyes.

“Oh are we making a bet?” She quirked her eyebrow up at him in question.

“Yes, Miss Parker we are. So what do I get?” He wrapped his arms around her and waited for her answer.

“Hmm, let me think about it.”

“Fair enough…”

“But!”

“But?”

“You have to think about what I get, if I win.” Liz slapped his ass and winked as she walked out of the motel room. Max was left stunned because he could think about a thousand things he wanted if he won, and if he was honest he could think of a few she would want if she won.

Only time would tell who would win the bet.

****

“Morning sweetheart.” Nancy walked into the kitchen to find Liz drinking a glass of chocolate milk.

Liz was somewhat startled, she thought she could sneak into the kitchen, get her milk and make it to her bedroom before anyone saw her, no such luck. “Hi Mom.” Liz whispered out softly. She couldn’t even look her mother in the eye.

“How are you feeling?”

“Okay. I was…” Her mother didn’t want to know about her pregnancy.

“What? You were?” Nancy and Jeff had decided that instead of talking they would show their daughter how much she meant to them, and how important she was and how proud they were of her. Talking could be done later.

“I was just going to say, that I was sick this morning when I got up but other than that I feel great.” Liz managed a small smile. Nancy however decided to cross the room and place a hand on her daughter’s forehead.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“What are you doing?”

“Just checking to make sure you don’t have a fever and that it was just morning sickness.”

“Oh.” Liz was wondering where the body snatchers were hiding, the ones that took her parents.

“Are you hungry? Your father will be down shortly and the cooks are making your favorite breakfast as we speak.” Nancy asked hopeful that her daughter wouldn’t crawl into her shell.

“I am starving. Thanks Mom.” Nancy nodded and wrapped her arms around her daughter. “I love you, Liz.” Liz couldn’t help the tears that fell from her eyes at her mother’s words. She needed her more than she wanted to admit and was so thankful for the moment.

Jeff Parker stood at the entranceway of the kitchen, he watched his wife and his daughter in their embrace, he swallowed thickly. He saw how fragile his daughter looked and knew that the decision that he and his wife made was the right one, the only one.

“Hate to break up the moment,” Jeff entered the room quietly, not sure if his daughter was still upset with him. But she turned her teary gaze to him, he knew at that moment, she was never upset with him, she was upset with herself. He reached out his arms and she ran into them with such a force that he had not felt since she was at leave six years old. He held his baby girl in his arms and allowed her to cry on his shoulder, something he had not let her do for far too long.

“I love you, Daddy.” Liz cried into her father’s shoulder.

“I love you, too sweetheart. Now, no more tears. We have a big breakfast to eat.” Jeff smiled past his own tears and kissed his daughters forehead gently.

“Right.” Liz swiped her tears and hugged her father and mother once more before leaving the room.

After Liz left the room, they both stood in silence looking at one another, and then something from the corner of their eyes caught their attention.

“Max.” Max smiled sheepishly. He was in the backyard shooting the basketball around and he walked in right at the moment the exchange between parents and child took place.

“Sorry. I didn’t want to interrupt.” Max hung his head and attempted to walk past them but he was stopped by a hand on his shoulder. He turned and saw that it was Jeff’s hand. Max looked up in confusion.

“I want you to know that if you ever need to talk to anyone, I’m here. Just because she’s my daughter doesn’t mean that I can’t be there for you Max. No matter how busy I am, I will make time. Okay?” Jeff asked seriously.

“Yes. Thank you.”

“Stop thanking us Max. We want to do this, we have the opportunity to do this with you and Liz because of you. So go get washed up for breakfast.” Nancy pulled him into a tight embrace and felt the young man relax. She smiled, mission accomplished.

****

After breakfast, Liz went upstairs to her room to call Serena. As well as Maria and Isabel. She was going to tell Maria and Isabel of her news, but decided to wait. She wanted to talk to Serena, after all she knew how Liz felt.

“Liz?” Nancy and Jeff knocked on their daughters door.

“Come in!” Liz yelled from atop her bed.

“Do you know where Max is?” Jeff asked and Liz shook her head.

“You might want to check the…”

“Did I hear my name?” Max came up behind startling all of them.

“Sorry.”

“It’s okay. We just wanted to talk to the both of you, to get a few formalities out of the way.” Both Liz and Max nodded.

Nancy looked to Jeff to continue. He nodded and stood in front of both teens and began.

“Nancy and I have discussed this, and we still want you to finish school Liz. We expect that.” Liz just nodded.

“As well as you too, Max.”

“I know. We will.”

“Right. Now as far as college and the baby, you already know we are paying the tuition and Nancy has decided to stop traveling as Liz gets farther along to help the both of you out with the baby.”

“Thank-“

“But she’s not going to do it for you. This is your baby. We are the grandparents.”

“We know. We wouldn’t ask for your help unless we needed it.”

“I know that Max.” Jeff and Nancy knew that when the time came Max would be more than up for the challenge of raising a baby, it was their daughter they were afraid of. They had faith, but they weren’t sure that Liz saw the big picture. The sacrifices that she faced, and that’s what worried them the most.

“Mom, Dad. Thank you.” Liz finished softly. She was still processing the fact that she was going to be a mother, and she wasn’t sure if it had really hit her yet. She had a good idea that soon, it would.

****

Max decided he needed a quick swim. He hadn’t seen Liz since their conversation with her parents. He had called Michael and Alex to come over in a few hours to play some ball.

“One more lap.” He mumbled to himself as he floated at one end of the pool and that’s when he saw her. He looked up to find out what she was doing and before he knew it she jumped in, clothes and all.

“Liz, baby what are you doing?”

“I needed to touch you.”

“Me too, but now you’re soaking wet.” He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her lips softly.

“Thank you, Max.” Liz wrapped her arms around his neck and lifted her legs around his waist, pulling him that much closer.

“For what?” Max reared back a little to look at her face.

“For sticking with me.”

“I told you Liz. I’m not going anywhere. You’ll never have to face anything alone as long as I still have air in my lungs.” Liz smiled brightly and pulled him down for another sweet and passionate kiss.

Jeff and Nancy watched from the back porch. They knew at that moment everything would be okay so long as they stayed as in love as they are at that moment.

“It’s amazing isn’t it?” Nancy asked her husband.

“What?”

“Their love. They compliment each other and the way he loves her, it’s all I could have ever wished for her.” Jeff smiled and pulled his wife against his side. It was all he could have ever wished for as well.

Chapter 27

“Liz, are you sure you don’t want me to go with you?” Max asked as he grabbed a pair of jeans from his closet.

“I’m sure. It’s not a big deal. I’m going to confirm what we already know and then I’ll make the appointment for the next appointment.” Liz knew that Max wanted to be with her for her first doctor’s appointment but she knew all they were going to do was give her another exam, some vitamins and blood tests.

Max sagged his shoulders in defeat; he and Liz had been talking about this ever since she told him about it. He figured that it wasn’t such a big deal at this point, but made sure she understood he wanted to be there for all the rest.

He turned and watched her sitting at the edge of his bed. “You okay?” Max asked kneeling down in front of her. “Yeah, I’m just really scared,” Liz tried to give Max a small smile but failed miserably. Max saw it in her eyes, he already knew it, and so he reached out his hand and cupped her cheek.

“I know baby. But I’ll always be here for you, you know that right?” Max asked leaning up and kissing her lips softly.

“I know. I love you, Max.” Liz leaned over and rested her head against his.

“Love you, too.” He smiled before rising to his feet.

“So, I’ll see you later.” Max assured her before kissing her one last time and entering his bathroom to change.

Liz stood in his room for a few minutes. She swallowed thickly and wished that she had as much confidence as he had.

****

Liz’s doctor appointment was very uneventful. They confirmed her pregnancy and went through a list of things that she would be experiencing in the coming weeks. She also made an appointment for her next visit.

Nancy was watching her daughter’s expression closely. Nancy knew she needed to talk to her daughter, but so far each time she tried Liz said she didn’t feel up to it.

“Liz, what time are you meeting Max?”

“He said he’d be back home by five. Then we’re going to eat and see a movie, why?” Liz questioned her mother suspiciously.

“Did you want me to bring you anywhere, before we go home? I have a few errands to run and…”

“Yes, could you drive me to Serena’s apartment?” Liz decided she needed to talk to someone that went through what she was going through.

“Sure sweetheart.” Liz had given her mother a few directions and about twenty minutes later, they were pulling up to Serena’s apartment.

“Okay, I can have Serena drive me back to the house later, if that’s okay?” Liz asked.

“Of course. I love you.”

“Love you too, Mom.” Liz leaned over the seat and kissed her mother’s cheek goodbye.

Nancy watched as her daughter made her way up the stairs to Serena’s apartment. At that moment she felt the need to go somewhere she hadn’t been to in over a week. She put the car in drive and headed towards her destination.

****

Max pulled up to the familiar patch of grass and trail of gravel. He took a deep breath and reached for a bright bouquet of yellow, white and red roses and exited his Jeep.

Why was the sun shining he wondered? Every time he came here the sun was always bright, it made him even more depressed. His shoulders sagged and he took a few purposeful strides to his destination.

****

She watched him closely. She hadn’t thought he would be here today. Most days he appeared older and wiser beyond his years, but today he looked very much the seventeen-year-old boy he was.

Her heart broke for him.

****

Max kneeled down and placed the fresh flowers on his mother’s grave. His emotions were bubbling forth and he was trying hard to fight them back.

“Hi, Mom. God, I hate this…” he began softly and quickly composed himself.

“I feel like I have so much to tell you, so much to talk to you about,” he decided to sit down, he was going to be here for a while, he thought.

“Liz is pregnant. And I’m going to be a father, long before I thought I would. But I’m happy Mom. But I’m so scared.” Max finally allowed his tears to spill forward as he talked to his mother.

“I don’t know how to be a father. What if I’m not good enough, what if I fail? You always told me that I made you proud, but,” he couldn’t finish. His emotions were all spilling into one another.

“I’m scared for Liz. I know deep down she’s happy but I’m so scared that this will change her. What if it changes her so much, she can’t love me? What if she regrets it later on? What if I’m not enough for her?” Max sighed in defeat. These were all the questions that plagued him at night, when he was alone in his room. Questions he would never have answers to in the near future. Only time would tell. That was too long for Max to live with that type of uncertainty.

****

His words shook her to the very core. It was what she thought about all the time. Would it ever be enough? Would she lose the most important person in her life?

She was pulled from her thoughts at the sound of his voice once again.

****

“Jeff and Nancy have been great, mom. I always knew you were smart and you always had a plan. I could have never guessed all those months ago, how right you really were. They treat me like I’m their son and I really love them. I’m not theirs but they love me just the same. I don’t want you to think that they are replacing you, because they could never. You mean so much to me, and I’ll never forget you,” he swallowed back the lump that formed in his throat.

“I promise you that when my baby is born, I’m going to tell them everything about you. They will know you. I know that you’ll never get to hold your grandchild, you’ll never get to spoil them or kiss them, or hug them, or tell them how much you love them. But I will mom…I’ll tell them and I’ll give them everything I am, everything you’ve taught me…I’ll teach them.” Max was in complete tears at that point. He was so overcome with grief that he hadn’t heard the person step out from behind the tree and stand next to him.

****

She couldn’t hold back her tears anymore at his declaration. She did love him as if he was her own. A child that she could never bare, but her best friend had given her a gift whether she knew it our not.

She wouldn’t fail her…or him.

****

“Max,” Nancy started and watched his surprised expression at seeing her there.

“N-Nancy,” Max began to swipe the tears from his eyes and cheeks. How long had she been there?

Nancy smiled softly and took a seat beside him, she reached out and wrapped her arm around his shoulders. Max tensed up for a moment, before becoming relaxed and resting his head against Nancy’s shoulder.

“You know,” Nancy began softly.

“When your mom and I were younger, we would talk about what we’d do when we grew up. Did you know that all she ever wanted to be was a mother?” Max was taken aback by Nancy’s confession of his mother.

Nancy just nodded and Max let her continue.

“When we got older and your mom got married, I’m sure she told you, the doctor’s told her she couldn’t have children.” Max’s tears continued to flow so he just nodded against Nancy’s shoulder.

“She showed up on my doorstep that day, and I just held her until she stopped crying. I told her that I wished that I could have had it for her, but she knew I couldn’t.”

“Why?” Max asked confusingly.

“I was diagnosed with cancer at the time. Your mother knew that the doctors were doing tests to see just how bad it was. And so that day we made a pact with each other. That if one day she by some miracle was able to have a baby and that if I survived the cancer, that we would be there for each other no matter what happened in our lives. And if the time came, we would take care of each other,” Nancy allowed the tears of the recollection of that day seep through her soul and spill forward.

“I didn’t know that. I mean I knew that she always called me her miracle, but I just never knew it was like that for the two of you. You were closer than I could even imagine.”

“We were. I feel like we still are because of you. You are the best parts of your mother and when I look at you…I see her. I recognize her heart, her sincerity and her love in you.” Nancy reached up and swiped the tears from Max’s eyes before continuing.

“I come to see her at least once a day. I just usually sit here and remember her. Other times I ask her for guidance with you…and with Liz,” Nancy laughed to herself. What kind of mother was she that she had to ask her deceased best friend for advice?

Max was speechless, he never knew Nancy came out here. He looked at her differently, for the first time Max saw just how important his mother was to Nancy.

“She always talked about you, you know?” Max started hesitantly and watched Nancy turn her surprised gaze towards him.

“She did? I mean…what did she say?”

“She would tell me things about you, when you were younger. But I remember one story, I never got to ask her what happened, but she told me about that day she found out she was pregnant with me,” Max watched Nancy’s features closely. He wondered if she knew the rest of the story, but continued nevertheless.

“She said that she went to the hospital to see you, you weren’t doing well but she wanted to share her miracle with you. Because she felt everyone…”

“Deserved a miracle.” Nancy finished for him.

“Your mom always used to say that to me.” Nancy smiled in remembrance.

“Yeah, she used to say it to me too.” Max agreed and waited and hoped that Nancy would fill in the rest of the story.

“She came to my bedside, and I was so sick from the drugs they’d been giving me. In addition to which, I had just been told that I too would never be able to conceive. It took a lot out of me but I dealt with it. I had Jeffrey and he was so supportive. Anyway she was bursting at the seams and I asked her what was going on. And that’s when she told me she was pregnant. That was her dream come true…her miracle. And I was so happy for her. After a few months I started to get better and I was sent home. I would see your mom everyday, she even let me go with her to the doctor’s appointments when your father couldn’t,” Nancy began and realized that maybe she shouldn’t have mentioned him.

“I can honestly tell you, that the moment I saw you on the ultrasound. I fell in love with you, Max. She was my best friend, and we shared everything and she allowed me to experience her pregnancy with her. I am forever grateful to her for that.” Max could tell how emotional Nancy was and thought about telling her that he didn’t need to hear anymore, but his heart wouldn’t let him. He wanted to know it all. Like for instance, if she was sick and couldn’t have children, how did Liz come to be.

Nancy watched the questions pass across his face and knew she could finish.

“I found out I was pregnant around the same time I found out that the cancer had returned. I had a very important decision to make. Do I keep my baby and risk dying in the process or do I give it up and fight for my life? I can honestly say that the decision was not an easy one, but I talked to your mother about it. We talked about both options; I knew I could be completely honest with her. Was I ready to die? And the answer was yes. If my baby could live, could grow up and be happy, then my answer was yes. The doctors, hell even Jeff were skeptical about my choice, but Jeff supported me even though he was terrified. So I spent the next months of pregnancy enjoying every single moment, knowing it might be the only bond I share with my child.” Fresh tears fell and Max reached out and grasped Nancy’s hand for comfort.

“Your mother came to me in the hospital, with you just a few months old. I was in labor and the doctors had no idea what my condition was. I couldn’t get any tests done for my cancer, so for all I knew it would be the last time I would see her or my husband. But I still held onto the hope that I would at least get to see my daughter’s face, just once.” Max began to cry for Nancy, for the thought that she had to face not knowing whether she would ever get to see her baby. It hit a place inside him that had not yet been awakened until her words were said. He would be a father but there were so many things that could go wrong. He knew now more than ever, he had to be strong. Liz would need him and he wouldn’t let her down.

“As soon as she was born the doctors placed her in my arms and I cried. I cried harder than I ever have in my entire life. I loved her the moment I saw her,” Nancy started. Max had to agree with her, he loved Liz the moment he saw her too.

“The next few weeks were pretty much a blur. I held Liz in my arms every chance I could. And then one night, your mom came to my room and she sat and held Liz and do you know what she told me?”

“No, what?” Max asked anxiously.

“She told me, that I had to live to see Liz grow up. She said that our children would grow up and they would be best friends like she and I were. And then she said, it’s time for my miracle. I was confused at the time, because to me my miracle was Liz. Somehow your mother knew different.” Nancy smiled.

“You lived to see her grow up. You lived to see her talk and run. And you’ll live to see her have her own child.” Max finished softly. And not for the first time, Nancy saw him become a man once again. It was funny to her how quickly he could slip from role to role. It was quite amazing to her.

“I did, but she didn’t. I feel like I failed her, I should have known better and I’m so sorry Max.” Nancy turned and began to apologize but Max wouldn’t hear of it.

“No, don’t be sorry. My mother is gone, but she’ll always be a part of me…and you. And I’m so thankful to have you and Jeff in my life. When I’m a father, I’m going to need the both of you to help me, to guide me, but most importantly, I need you to help me remember…help me not forget as the years go on. I will always love my mother. She will always be my mother. But I had to let her go long before I was prepared, but she’s always with me, always with you. She watched over me and you while she was alive and so I have to believe that even though she’s not physically here with us, she’s still here watching over us.” Max’s words were hard to decipher since he was crying but she understood nevertheless. She reached out and pulled Max into a tight embrace. They cried against one another for a few minutes before pulling away regaining their composure.

They stood and dusted off their pants before heading towards their vehicles. Nancy’s was parked a little further away from Max’s, which is why he didn’t see it when he first arrived.

Just as Max made his way to the Jeep, he stopped and asked a question so softly that Nancy had to strain to hear him.

“Do you think…I’ll be a good father?” Max asked.

Nancy smiled and stood in front of him, pushing back his bangs gently from his forehead. “I think you will be a great father,” she answered him honestly.

“But…what if I turn out like him?” he asked cautiously.

“Max, your father wasn’t always bad. And just remember outside influences affected the man he became. You are smarter than that and I have complete faith in you. And most importantly I trust you with Liz. I just…” Nancy hadn’t realized where her mind led her until she was there.

“Liz?” Max deduced easily because it was on his mind.

“Yes. Max I need to ask you to be patient with her. These next few months are going to try your patience and your heart. She loves you. Just remember that. But she’s young and not just age wise. Mind wise. And that’s Jeffrey’s fault and mine. We thought by sheltering her we were protecting her, but now we see that was a mistake. We’ve given her a disability that right now, she doesn’t need on top of everything else going on. She’s going to do a lot of growing up in the next few months, even years and,” Nancy didn’t want to voice the words aloud. Apparently, though Max had already thought of that so he finished.

“She may come out a different person. She may be someone that doesn’t love me the way she does now. I know that, but I’m prepared for it. I won’t let her forget and push me away. I know it’s not going to be as easy as that either, but I’m will to try with everything in me not to lose her. I love her too much.” Max smiled and waited for Nancy’s response. Which was just a look. A look he could not describe. He left shortly thereafter.

Nancy however stood rooted in her spot. She closed her eyes and tilted her head heavenward.

“You really outdid yourself with him, Diane. He’s simply remarkable. He’s going to be an amazing father. I just hope my daughter can be as strong as he is. But I’ll promise you this; I will protect your son’s heart as much as I can. Love you.” Nancy allowed one single tear to slip from the corner of her eyes before making her way to her car.

Chapter 28

“Hey Liz, I’m surprised to see you.” Serena said once she swung open her front door.

“Sorry, I should have called but I was in the neighborhood and I wanted to talk to you. Are you busy?” Liz asked hesitantly. Of course she’s busy, she had a one year old to worry about, she thought.

“No, I’m okay. Sophia is just playing right now.” Serena showed Liz into the living room and noticed immediately there was something wrong.

“Liz, are you okay?” Serena took a seat beside her friend and waited for her response. All she got however was tears.

“Liz…” Serena began.

“I’m pregnant,” Liz rushed out.

“You’re, wow! Congratulations.” Serena smiled brightly. Sure she knew what lied ahead but it was still something special.

“Congra—” Liz started but couldn’t finish her sentence.

“Yes. You’re going to have a baby and that’s a wonderful thing,” Serena tried to reassure her.

“I’m not ready. I thought I was. Most of the time I think I am, but what if I mess it up? What if everything I do is wrong? It’s not just me anymore; it’s Max and the baby. I can’t afford to screw it up,” Liz rushed on quickly.

“Liz, calm down. I felt the same way. And it’s hard. It’s the hardest thing you’ll go through until the next hardest thing,” Serena didn’t want to scare Liz but she wasn’t going to lie to her either.

“It gets worse?” Liz asked flatly.

“Yes. It does. Because you’re pregnant now. You have, how far along are you?”

“About eight weeks,” Liz murmured.

“So you have quite a few months ahead of you. And as things progress it will get more difficult. Not just physically, but emotionally as well. But you have a great family and you have Max. Who loves you like something I’ve never seen before in my life.”

“What do you mean?”

“Liz, tell me you don’t see it?” Serena shook her head at Liz’s innocence.

“I know Max loves me.”

“No, Liz. Max adores you. He loves you the way a man loves a woman he’s going to spend the rest of his life with. Are you prepared for that?”

“W-What are you talking about? You think Max is gonna ask me to marry him or something?” Liz rushed out nervously. This was too much for her.

“Not now sweetie. But eventually he will. I’m sure of it. Are you ready to deal with that?”

“I don’t know. I know that I love him so much and I don’t want to be without him ever.”

“Good. Just remember that when things get worse,” Serena squeezed her friend’s hand in comfort.

“What do you mean by that?”

“I mean that. You’re going to have regrets. You probably already do. But remember this moment. This conversation. I never had anyone and I want you to know that I’m here for you. And I want you to know that having a baby is not easy alone or with someone. It’s going to test everything you know, everything you love.”

“Why? It’s my baby. Of course I’m going to love it,” Liz reasoned.

“That’s true. But you’re sixteen. And when your baby is born you’ll be seventeen. You’ll be a mother before you graduate high school. You may not be able to attend your senior prom because your baby might be sick. You won’t be hanging out at parties because you’ll be home taking care of your baby. I know that your parents are going to help you, but I know they aren’t going to do it for you, they don’t seem like the type.” Serena concluded.

“You’re right, they said they would help but that this was me and Max’s child. And I know that, but Max seems so sure of himself. What if…”

“Did you ask him? You know, find out what he thinks about it? I bet he’d surprise you, Liz. I mean from what you’ve told me about his past, I know that Max is a pretty strong guy and he can hold his own. But don’t just assume that he’s not as terrified as you. In fact, I’d even go out on a limb and say that he’s just as scared as you are. And that’s human. It’s why you need to be honest with him, Liz. Now, more than ever is when you have to make all your feelings clear. If you don’t, I can guarantee you it will come back to bit you in the ass.” Serena pulled Liz into a tight embrace. Liz’s mind was still reeling, but she felt a little better. She knew what she had to do, talk to Max.

“Thank you. I don’t think I’ve told you this, but I’m so grateful that you came into my life when you did.” Liz smiled and Serena returned the gesture.

“Me too, Liz. Me too.”

****

“Hey baby, how was your day?” Max asked as soon as he entered his girlfriend’s bedroom and found her sitting out on her balcony.

“I’m good,” Liz smiled and kissed his lips softly as he took a seat beside her.

“And the doctor?”

“Good. She said I’m about eight weeks. But it was kind of hard for them to calculate it because I wasn’t very regular and couldn’t pin point the last time I had my period. The doctor said that as soon as they do an ultrasound, they’d be able to figure it out a little more.”

“So, they couldn’t tell you when the baby was going to be due?” Liz shook her head at Max’s question.

“I’m sorry. I should have kept better track,” Liz started.

“Hey,” Max tilted her chin towards him. “It’s okay. They’ll figure it out. No need to worry about that, right?” He smiled softly at her.

“Right.”

“So what else did you do today?” Max questioned because he knew that she had been home for a while.

“I went to see Serena and we talked.” Liz stood and leaned against the railing.

“About what? Did you tell her?” Max stood and wrapped his arms around her waist.

“I did. I hope you’re not angry. I just thought, she’d already been through it, so I just wanted her thoughts.” Liz hoped that he wasn’t upset with her.

“It’s fine. I can understand. I went to the cemetery today.” Liz reached up and caressed the back of his head that was resting on her shoulder.

“Are you okay?”

“I am now. It’s just hard,” Liz wasn’t sure what he was referring too, and was going to leave the sentence open. Then she remembered Serena’s words.

“What is Max? Us? Me being pregnant?” Liz questioned without turning to him. She felt his body relax a little and his grip on her tighten.

“All of it. I’m happy and terrified all at the same time. I love you, and I’m so happy that we’re going to have a baby. But I feel like I don’t know what the hell I’m doing at the same time.” Liz gasped softly at Max’s confession. Serena was right, she thought.

Liz turned to face Max. He hadn’t released his grip on her yet. They stood staring at one another for a few minutes before Liz spoke up.

“Me too. I’m scared that I don’t know how to do this. I don’t know how to be a mother. I’m still in high school and I’m afraid of letting everyone down.”

“Liz, baby. I know it’s going to be hard. I’m not going to delude myself or you for that matter. But I need you to be honest with me. I need you to tell me, if it ever becomes too much. Let me help you and don’t push me away. Can you promise me that?” Max whispered out to her.

“Yes. I promise. So long as you promise me the same thing. I’m going to need you, Max. I know it’s not going to be easy to deal with what’s ahead, but I need you.” Liz whispered out just as softly and Max leaned in and kissed her lips softly.

“I promise.” They stayed that way in each other’s arms for close to an hour. They just stood and listened to each other’s breathing and heartbeats. This was the beginning of their long journey and they both prayed they make it to the end…together.

****

“How are you feeling, Liz?” Serena asked as they stood in front of Liz’s locker Monday morning.

“I’m okay. I had some toast this morning, but it’s looking like a mistake. It’s funny how this just snuck up on me.” Liz quipped lightly.

“Yeah, same thing with me. One day I was fine, the next was sick as a dog.” Serena joked.

“How’s Sophia?”

“She’s good. I hate leaving her in daycare. I’d love to be at home with her, but that’s not possible.” Liz listened to Serena talk and wondered if she would feel the same. Although her child would be with her mother, not daycare, would she miss them? Probably, she thought.

“Hey beautiful.” Max crept up behind Liz and placed a kiss on her temple.

“Hi.”

“Hey Serena, how’s it going?”

“Good. Thanks Max.” Liz was glad that the awkwardness of Serena’s first meeting with Max was finally over with. In fact the next day after her talk with Serena. Liz’s parents invited Serena and her daughter over for dinner.

“Hey guys!” Serena, Liz and Max both turned when they heard Michael’s voice from down the hall, followed by Maria, Isabel and Alex.

“Hey! What’s going on? Long time no see.” Max said.

“Yeah, well when you get grounded for coming home drunk, it kind of puts a damper on the social life.” Michael joked and gave Max a hi-five.

“Ah! I told you, your ass would get caught!” Max teased.

“Yeah, yeah Maxwell. I’ll remember for next time.”

“Sure you will Mike! That was classic though, we both fell through his window and there was his father at the edge of the bed. He was pissed!” Alex finished.

“Oh that must have been funny!” Liz piped into the conversation.

“Sure it was. I mean of course when my parents found out, I thought I might not ever see sunlight again, but they got over it,” Alex finished giving Liz a quick hug before excusing himself to head to class.

“Liz, when are we going to go shopping? Summer is approaching, and we need to look our best.” Isabel asked, and Liz froze. Max noticed her mood change quickly as well as Serena, who decided to help the situation.

“Oh, that sounds so great! You know, Liz and I were thinking about it, weren’t we Liz?” Serena asked hopeful that Liz was over her moment of shock.

“Y-yeah,” Liz answered absentmindedly. She couldn’t go shopping for clothes that wouldn’t fit her in a month. She knew she would have to tell her friends sooner rather than later. She was just waiting for her next doctor’s appointment in a few weeks before she did. She didn’t even really know how far along she was to begin with.

“Cool! Okay well we should go this weekend, you know when lover boy is working?” Maria winked at Max, who just looked away and blushed.

“I don’t know why you are blushing, Romeo.”

“Excuse me? Romeo?” Max asked a little more than intrigued by Maria’s words.

“Yes. Max, you are the class Romeo. You should hear the conversations girls have about what you do for Liz. They simply wish to kiss the ground you walk on Evans.” Maria rolled her eyes in exasperation, how could he not know by now?

“I think my girlfriend is exaggerating at bit, Maxwell.” Michael decided to try and stop Maria from completely embarrassing Max and Liz for that matter.

“Thanks Michael.” They all turned when they heard the warning bell sound, and made their way down the hall to their classes.

When they reached their doors, Michael shouted out, “Maxwell!”

“Yeah?” Max turned his attention from kissing Liz to his friend.

“I just wanted to clarify what Maria was saying earlier.” Max knotted his eyebrows in confusion looking at Liz. Who looked just as confused and then turned his attention back to Michael.

“Girls don’t want to kiss the ground you walk on. They want to kiss all the places only Liz gets to kiss, lover boy!” Michael ran into his class before Max caught up with him.

“Payback Michael!”

“It’s a bitch!” Liz joined her boyfriend.

“I can’t believe he said that,” Max hissed out.

“I can. This is Michael. His mind is always in the gutter, just like Maria’s.” Isabel smiled and entered the classroom.

****

“So you think that’s true?” Max whispered out in her ear during lunch.

“W-what?” Liz trembled when she felt his warm breath on her neck.

“That girls want to kiss all the places only you get to?” he continued huskily.

“Y-yes. I’m sure it’s true. I’m sure they hate me and they will hate me even more when they find out I’m having your baby.” Liz smiled up at Max and they kissed each other softly. Neither of the two realizing that their friends had joined the table just in time to hear Liz’s words.

“Oh my God!” Maria screeched out. Liz and Max froze mid kiss. They didn’t hear? Did they? They turned slowly to face their friends, yup they heard.

“Hi guys. Boy I’m starving!” Liz announced and took a bite of Max’s sandwich, because at the moment it was closer to her.

“Hi,” Isabel said as she took a seat on the bench. Maybe they heard wrong.

“Hey,” Michael adverted his eyes before taking a seat.

“So, nice day out no?” Alex tried to lighten the mood, but his head was still reeling.

Max decided to not let the awkwardness linger at the table any longer. So he decided to speak up.

“So I guess we should just break the news…”

“I’m pregnant,” Liz finished for Max. She didn’t want him to have to keep explaining everything to everyone, it was her life too and it was about time she started to take an active role in it.

“Wow. I don’t know what to say. I mean congratulations…” Isabel spoke up first. This was bigger than anything she could’ve imagined.

“Yeah. Congrats.” Michael wasn’t sure if that word was in order but decided he wouldn’t be the one that brought everyone down.

“Definitely. Congrats guys.” Alex finished with a smile. Max and Liz smiled softly. They knew their friends were in shock but at least they weren’t chastising them, yet.

“Are you crazy? You’re only sixteen!” Maria hissed out, and for the first time in her life she was using discretion with her volume.

“I know that, Maria. But I’m pregnant and I can’t change it.” Liz retorted sarcastically.

“Yes you can. You can’t raise a baby, Liz. I mean you don’t even know how to change a diaper.”

“Maria, Max and I are having this baby and I really want you to be happy for me.”

“How can I be? You are throwing your life away.” Maria knew she should hold her tongue but did Liz realize how hard it was to take care of a baby?

“Maria. Honestly, Liz and I have made a decision, her parents support us and if you don’t, I respect that, but I don’t want to hear you or anyone for that matter putting Liz down. If you don’t like it, fine. But it’s not your choice.” Max stood and took Liz with him.

“Maria what the fuck is your problem?!” Everyone was once again shocked because instead of that question coming from Isabel, it came from Michael.

“What? I’m just being honest. You guys were too afraid to speak up.”

“No. We weren’t Maria. Max is right; it’s their decision. We are supposed to be their friends, we are supposed to support them.”

“Yes, but it’s not right.” Maria finished flatly.

“Really?” A voice from behind them interjected the argument.

“Serena!” Isabel squealed out.

“No, finish your thought Maria.” No one intimidated Maria or Isabel that is except for Serena.

“I was just saying that they should really think about what it means.”

“And you don’t think they have?” Serena crossed her arms, prepared to stick up for Max and Liz anyway she could.

“No, not honestly.”

“I’m glad I know better. I know they have. In fact Liz had thought about not keeping the baby, but after talking to Max, she realized it wasn’t what she wanted. They might be young, but don’t write them off as complete morons.” Serena turned on her heels and made her way back inside to find Max and Liz.

A few minutes later she found Max outside the girls bathroom.

“Max? What’s wrong?” He looked so distraught.

“She won’t come out and I know she’s sick.” Serena placed a hand on his shoulder and then moved around him and entered the bathroom.

“Liz?”

“Leave me alone!” Liz knew that she needed to calm down, but Maria’s words hurt her. She honestly didn’t know why. Hadn’t she thought the same thing? She did but for some reason hearing the words aloud brought it too close to home for her. She didn’t regret her decision but she wasn’t ready to hear more negativity about it. Which is what was going to happen as soon as the summer was over and she came back to her senior year looking very much pregnant.

Serena could see Liz on the floor in the last stall and decided to approach her slowly. “Liz, I know how you feel. I do. But don’t let it get to you. You’re stronger than those words. You’ll hear worse than that, I won’t lie to you, but you have Max and you have me.” Liz sniffled a little and realized what Serena was saying was right.

“And us.” Serena’s head snapped up when she heard Maria’s voice. And then saw Isabel standing next to her.

Then the distinct sound of the bathroom door latch being unlocked made them all turn their heads. Liz had tearstains on her cheeks and Maria felt even worse.

“I’m so sorry, Liz.” Liz shrugged and walked over to the sink to wash her face.

“I shouldn’t have said those things to you. I guess I was just shocked because I know what it feels like.” Now all eyes were on Maria and so she continued.

“About a month ago, Michael and I had a pregnancy scare. I ended up not being pregnant but I was terrified. I can’t raise a baby and I honestly thought about the fact that if I was, I wouldn’t have it.” Isabel and Liz both let out soft gasp at the same time. Serena just stood guarded, still not sure where Maria was going and she wouldn’t allow her to hurt Liz any further.

“Maria, why didn’t you tell me?” Liz turned to her friend.

“I was embarrassed. I don’t know. I want you to know that I didn’t mean it Liz. I know you’re going to be a great mother, and Max is going to be a great father.” Maria finished with sincerity shinning in her eyes.

“Yeah,” Liz shrugged and threw the paper towels in her hand into the nearby trashcan.

“Liz?” Serena stopped her just short of the door.

“Yeah?”

“You are going to be a great mother, don’t worry.”

“Right.”

“Liz, don’t sell yourself short.”

“I know. It’s just that Max seems so much more prepared than me and that is terrifying in and of itself.” Liz finished softly before pushing the door open. As soon as she cleared the doorway, there was Max with his arms waiting to hold her. And she needed it, she needed to feel him, she needed his comfort, it would be the only thing that allowed her to go through this entire process without going insane.

I simply wanted an honest reaction to the news, I just chose it to come from Maria  Thank you all for your encouraging feedback! I appreciate you dropping a little note to let me know I'm doing okay with the story. Chapter 29

2 months later

Liz was already working on her fourth month of pregnancy, and the morning sickness was well behind her, something she was very grateful for. Another thing was that it was finally the middle of the summer and tomorrow her and Max would be going to the doctors for an ultrasound, to see their baby for the first time. She was so excited.

Now though, most of the town had already seen her in her pregnant state. While she was in her last few weeks of school she started to show more and more, and she did her best to hide herself, but being as petite and thin as she was, it proved to be difficult.

Words, rumors and nasty looks are what Liz had to look forward to her last month of Junior year. Surely when she returned everyone would already know, and she hoped they had enough time during the summer to get over it. She didn’t hold her breath.

“Liz, what about this?” Liz turned from her place in the center of her room to look at Serena who was sitting on her bed holding up a light blue shirt. Sophia was crawling on the floor and Liz couldn’t help but laugh at how adorable she looked. Would her baby be just as cute? She had no doubt, if it looked like Max, she thought.

“No, it won’t fit. Trust me I’ve tried on everything in my closet.” Liz’s shoulder’s sagged once again. She was going to be bigger than a blimp!

“Hey lovely ladies.” All eyes snapped towards Liz’s bedroom door at the sound of Max’s voice. And suddenly, like clockwork, Sophia crawled over to Max. Max bent down to lift the small girl in his arms.

“Hey there cutie pie!” Max kissed Sophia’s chubby cheeks before walking over to his girlfriend in the middle of the room and kissing her lips softly. “Hi beautiful.” Liz blushed. How did he think she was beautiful? She was wearing his sweat pants and shirt, far from beautiful or anything remotely close to sexy. She sighed again.

“Hello Serena, how are you doing?” Max took a seat next to her and placed her daughter in her arms.

“I’m good. Just trying to find your fussy girlfriend something to wear.” Max eyed Serena suspiciously and then looked at Liz. Something was bothering her.

“I’ll be right back. I’m just going to change out of these clothes.” Max excused himself.

“Damn, you really are lucky,” Serena said gathering her things to leave. She sensed that whatever was bothering Liz would not be shared with her.

“What are you talking about?” Liz asked confused, still unmoved from her position on the floor.

“Max. He is a great guy and so supportive of you. And he tells you how beautiful you are everyday, that’s amazing.” Serena smiled and hoisted her daughter on her hip higher.

“Yeah, he is amazing.” A small smile played on Liz’s lips.

“Call me later.” Serena said as she made her way out of the bedroom door.

“I will.”

He was amazing. She got heavier and he never once made her feel anything less than beautiful, how did he do that? She wondered. But he hasn’t seen me naked in over two months, she thought to herself. Maybe that’s why he still thought she was beautiful. Tears began to cloud her vision before she even knew it. He would hate the way she looked, he would want to trade her in for a newer model or something, she thought wildly.

“Liz? Baby, why are you crying?” Max entered her room a few minutes later only to find her crying softly to herself.

“N-nothing.” Liz turned her head away and began going through the clothes on the floor in front of her.

“Don’t lie to me Liz. Tell me.” He coaxed her softly.

“I’m fat! I’m a whale and you keep telling me I’m perfect! But I’m not! I’m huge! You haven’t seen me Max in a while so you don’t know what I look like!” Liz yelled out and Max was a little taken back, but realized her hormones were all over the place lately. He and Nancy had a long discussion about what he should expect.

“Liz, I see you.”

“No you don’t! You haven’t even touched me in weeks! Weeks Max!” Her sobs took over her tiny body. And Max wrapped his arms around her.

“I don’t…I don’t have anything to wear. I’m not pretty with your sweat pants on and T-shirt. I look like a boy!” Liz cried out into Max’s shoulder. He laughed slightly at the ridiculousness of her words.

“Liz you are a far cry from looking like a boy. Your perfect round belly and your glowing skin, nope I don’t think of you and think ‘boy.’” Liz sniffled.

“Why don’t we get your mother and go shopping?” He whispered into her ear, he knew she was listening to his every word.

“And then I say we grab something to eat and then I’m taking you out.” She sniffled again but didn’t respond.

He helped her to her feet and brushed her hair away from her face. He waited until she raised her eyes to his and he framed her face in his hands and kissed her salty lips.

“Let’s go.” Liz took his outreached hand and followed him out of the room.

****

“Oh my God! Liz honey you look, pregnant.” Nancy knew her words made no sense but although she knew her daughter was pregnant, she hadn’t really gotten a good look at her progression. At least not in Max’s sweat pants and shirts.

“I am pregnant,” Liz rolled her eyes. She was hungry. Shopping was fun, but she really wanted food.

“I know. It’s just…” What was the word she was looking for?

“Amazing.” Max stepped forward. They had waited for her to change into one of her new outfits before going to get lunch.

Nancy nodded, that was exactly the word she was looking for. She watched the small exchange between Max and Liz before deciding to see about a scarf on the rack, far from their general vicinity.

A shy smile played on Liz’s lips, and when he placed his hand against the swell of her belly, she giggled. He was so serious and she told him as much.

“I know. It’s just you’re right I didn’t see what you looked like. And now that I have, I want to see all of you.” He leaned in and whispered into her ear for only her to hear.

“R-really?” Liz asked breathlessly. He hadn’t even done anything and she was already out of breath.

“God yes,” he kissed her lips softly and reached for her hand. They found Nancy a few feet away trying to act inconspicuous.

“Ready Mom? I’m hungry.” Nancy nodded and followed the two out of the store.

****

“Are you scared?” Max asked Liz nervously as they sat in the waiting room.

“Yes and no. Actually I’m excited! We’re going to see our baby.”

“Yeah.” Max said in awe.

“Miss Parker?” Liz stood and reached for Max’s hand. Liz then turned to her mother, “Mom, I want you to come with us.” Nancy smiled and followed them into the examining room.

After Liz’s checkup, the doctor prepared her for the ultrasound. Max watched as they squirted a jelly like substance across her belly, she gasped and he looked at her worriedly.

“It’s okay, Max. It’s just really cold.” Max nodded his head. He was so nervous. They had decided the night before they wanted to know what they were having.

A few minutes later, Nancy, Max and the doctor were surrounding Liz on the table. The room filled with the baby’s heartbeat and Max thought he might actually pass out.

“Is that?” Liz looked up at the doctor, eyes wide in amazement.

“That’s your baby’s heartbeat.” The doctor announced with a smile.

“It’s so fast, just like you told me Mom.” Liz smiled in awe at her mother. Nancy swiped the tears from the corners of her eyes. This was as real as it got, she thought.

Max was silent; he was trying to take everything in. His baby was in her; it filled him with a sense of pride, fear and utter happiness. He leaned over and placed a kiss on Liz’s forehead and squeezed her hand, trying to keep his emotions at bay. It was also the first time he had seen the pregnant swell of her belly without clothing. It was perfect, he thought with a smile on his face.

“Okay let’s take some pictures.” The doctor began to run the device over Liz’s protruding belly until the baby came into view on the screen.

“Oh my God! Max…that’s our baby.” Liz cried softly and Max was speechless at first sight. He had already fallen in love with his unborn child, but somehow he fell even further.

“Here is the head, arms…”

“Oh is that a foot?” Max asked enthusiastically, and the doctor simply nodded her response.

“Now you wanted to know what you were having right?” The doctor asked one last time, because some couples changed their minds at the last minute.

Max and Liz looked at one another and then turned to the doctor to answer, “ No. We want to wait.” Liz spoke up first.

Nancy was about to ask them if they were certain but then Max spoke, “There are very few surprises in life, we want to wait. We just want to make sure that the baby is healthy, that’s all we need to know.”

“Very well. The baby looks perfect. And you get to take these home with you.” The doctor handed Max the first pictures of his baby and he couldn’t help the small sob that escaped past his lips.

“Perfect,” he whispered.

Liz couldn’t help but agree.

****

“Daddy it was perfect! Our baby is just perfect!” Liz smiled at the dinner table later that night. Jeff had seen the pictures and was moved beyond belief. He had wanted to go, but at the last minute was called out of town that morning.

“I know sweetheart,” Jeff smiled at his very enthusiastic daughter.

“Where’s Max?” Nancy asked.

“He had to work,” Liz answered sadly.

“I thought he didn’t work today?” Jeff asked in confusion, they all knew Max’s schedule.

“Normally no, but Mr. Valenti called him in to cover for someone.”

“Liz, your mother and I have been talking. And if you feel up to it and if Max can manage some time away, we’d like to take you both with us on vacation. We are just going to drive up to the cabin for the week. I think you too could use some time away as well.” Jeff smiled.

“Really?!” Liz was excited she needed a vacation and time alone with Max. She thought she might actually combust if she didn’t get some alone time with him.

“Yes.” They finished dinner and later that night while her father was in the shower, Liz decided she needed to talk to her mother about something.

“Mom?” Liz knocked on her parent’s bedroom door. Her mother was preparing for her flight out to New York tonight. They would be back in two days, mainly because in case of anything she didn’t want to be gone for that long.

“Hello sweetie.”

“You almost done?”

“Yes, just waiting for your father to finish his shower. You know how he hates to get on planes without taking a shower.”

“Yeah I always found that kind of strange.” Liz laughed and hopped on top of her parent’s bed.

“Me too, sweetie, me too.” Nancy and Liz both shared a laugh. Nancy knew better, she saw the seriousness of her daughter’s face to know the next thing out of her mouth was anything less than funny.

“Can I talk to you about something?” Liz couldn’t look her mother in the face, not yet anyway.

“Anything.” Nancy took a seat next to her daughter waiting for her to continue.

“When you’re pregnant, can you…is it okay…to…” Liz wasn’t sure how her next words would be received.

“Make love?” Nancy knew exactly what her daughter wanted to know. She wasn’t sure that giving her advice was a good thing, but she was already pregnant. Couldn’t hurt, she thought.

“Yeah. I mean, not that I plan on it or that I’m even wanted but just in case you know?” Liz finished flatly.

“Liz, it’s perfectly fine. Unless if feels uncomfortable or hurts you. If not then you’re fine. And what makes you think you’re not wanted?” Nancy was thanking whoever gave her the hindsight to have a glass of wine before having this conversation.

“Well…I don’t know that for sure. But look at me. I’m fat.”

“You’re pregnant, there is a difference.”

“Yes, but my belly is huge, that’s not attractive.” Nancy stifled a small laugh. She never thought last year she would be having this conversation with her daughter, but was grateful nevertheless.

“Liz, being pregnant is a miracle and it’s beautiful. Your body goes through changes so that another human life can survive there for nine months until it’s ready and able to live in this world. That’s nothing short of amazing, and you should count yourself lucky to be able to do it. Some people can’t. And as far as you being unattractive, to whom? I know you are not referring to Max.”

“Why do you say that?” Liz asked confused. Was there something she was missing?

“Honey, I’ll tell you one thing. If you are worried about Max not wanting you, you are severely mistaken. He still looks at you like you’re his last meal.”

“No!” Liz looked up in surprise. He did?

“Yes!”

“Oh.” Liz nibbled on her bottom lip.

“Thanks Mom for not freaking out about this.”

“Liz, if you weren’t already pregnant I probably would have, but that’s kind of pointless now isn’t it?”

Liz just nodded, kissed her mother goodbye and made her way down the hall to her room.

****

“Max!” Liz called from her room to him.

“Yeah?”

“I’m going to take a shower, after I’m done you want to grab something to eat?” Max turned and looked at his alarm clock, it was close to eleven. Just about time for her pre-midnight snack. It was usually something silly like a piece of fruit but she needed to have it.

“Sure!” He watched her roll off the bed and enter her bathroom. Just then he had an idea.

He walked across the hall, closed her bedroom door behind him and stripped himself of his clothes.

Liz was thinking about how she would get Max to make love to her, without asking him. It was becoming increasing difficult not to tackle him, but she needed to act like a lady.

“Hey sexy.” The soft rumble of his voice caused her to jump. She was so startled that she dropped the bar of soap from her hands.

“Max! W-what are you doing here?” She turned her back to him once again. She wasn’t ready for him to see her completed naked, not yet.

“Well I was across the hall, thanking the powers that be for a moment alone with you. And I just had to come here and touch you,” He whispered into her ear. He knew she was nervous.

“I…I…” She leaned her head against his shoulder when she felt his arms wrap around her waist and rest upon her belly.

“I told you, you would sexy.” He nipped at her ear and waited for her response.

“What are you talking about?” He was driving her crazy with his hands.

“The bet baby. Don’t tell me you forgot. So around and let me get an unobstructed view.” Liz swallowed thickly but did as he asked, she kept her eyes closed and turned around.

Max sucked in a ragged breath, her breasts were fuller, and the flat expanse of her stomach was no more. Instead replaced with a round protruding belly that held the most precious thing on the planet. He smiled.

“Max, are you staring?” Liz asked impatiently. He was taking far too long.

“I am.”

“Max! Don’t! I told you…” She lifted her hands to cover herself but he stopped her, “No! Don’t. You are so incredibly sexy and I want you, Liz. Let me have you,” Max whispered out huskily.

Liz’s eyes snapped open when she felt his hands on her swollen breasts. He rolled her nipples between his fingers gently.

“Max…” she moaned out softly.

“Hmm, Liz.” He covered her lips in a sensual kiss. He was trying to familiarize his lips with hers, it was far too long since they had shared a kiss that deep.

“Can I make love to you?” he asked nuzzling her neck. Liz couldn’t breathe, his hands felt that good.

“Y-yes. Please…baby,” she managed a strangled moan. Max smiled against her shoulder and lifted her into his arms. He dried her off quickly and then carried her into her bedroom.

As soon as he laid down beside her she was in his lap in an instant.

“Liz?”

“What did you want?”

“You. Now.” He replied while running his hands up her sides and over her belly.

“No. The bet. You had to decide what you wanted. Did you?” He looked away embarrassed.

“Max? Tell me.”

“No.”

“You have to.”

“No.”

“Maax.”

“No. It’s just embarrassing at this point. I just need to be inside you Liz, please.”

“No either you tell me or I stop.”

“NO! I’ll tell you.” He would die on the spot if she stopped.

“Glad you see it my way.”

He leaned up and kissed her softly, but avoided her eyes. “Now, tell me what you want me to do.”

“I want to make love to you…”

“Hmm-mmm?”

“With you bent over, and,” he was mortified.

“Continue.” She was already crawling off his lap to get into position.

“Me behind you, t-that’s how I want you.” He looked away, but his eyes grew wide when he saw her taking position. This was not happening.

“Liz, you don’t have to.”

“A bet is a bet Max.”

“No, Liz seriously.”

“Do you want me?”

“Yes.”

“Then take me.” She waited for him and he didn’t disappoint. He slid into her dripping center seconds later, resting his head against her back.

“God, how I missed you,” he moaned.

“Me too, Max.”

“I love you baby.” He whispered out.

“Love you too.”

He began to slide his thick erection against her sensitive and swollen walls. He placed his hands on her hips allowing him to slide further inside her than ever before and they both loved the feeling.

“Liz…baby…you are so…damn…tight…” He moaned out as he lost all coherent thought and began slamming into her body with wild abandonment. He needed to feel her let go. He lived for it.

“Max…oh God! You feel so good….so good….yes!” Liz’s inner walls began to quiver under his assault and moments later she felt her first orgasm in months rip through her very core.

He felt her flutter violently around him and it was too much, he had waited too long to be with her. He let go and a long serrated moan ripped from his throat as his seed pumped uncontrollably from his body into hers.

They both fell back against the bed breathless and sweaty.

“Oh God, that was fucking amazing!” Liz breathed out.

“Wow, did you say fucking amazing?” Max asked with amusement in his voice.

“Yes. That was…”

“I know.”

“I need more.”

“What?”

“I do. Max it’s been too long. I can’t wait that long to feel you moving inside me.” She crawled up on his lap and to his amazement he was ready for her. He gritted his teeth as her swollen, slick walls closed over him again.

If this was a dream, Max Evans never wanted to wake up.
