Chapter 4
What happened exactly between them here? What was those kisses meaning? And that excitement he was feeling? Indeed he came for her. To confront her and to get the answers....but never....really never.... he would have figured such a reaction from her.
That kiss was not a high school girlfriend's kiss, that's what annoyed him. That was a maneuver to make him lose control, to weaken him cause she was perceiving him like a danger. *
Good! She indeed got me!* he thought.
His elbows on the table, he was pondering *
Liz had deeply changed! She became a woman, feminine till the tip of her nails, desirable, sexy and fiercely resolute and yet....*Under her shell, he felt her fragility...like a secret wound.
However, she chose to be a lawyer to defend people but mostly to defend herself: the years passing by plus her talent helping, she had succeeded.
When they were at high school, she was very ambitious, the only snag was the money and he, Max, had resolved the problem with a check. That damned check which had provoked the break up...It had been an enormous blunder, signed EVANS.
All along the school years, Max had a rough relationship with Liz, more intense than the other teens. But the day he came with his dollars, as if he wanted to buy his friend, that day.... he spoiled everything between them.
At the begining, Max didn't want to see what was going on between him and Liz, he understood that there was something....he read it in her eyes....but that was too complicated for a seventeen years old teen. He was already overwhelmed by his father...Liz's mother...his class's magazine...the music practice with the Paquet...the basketball...too much for him!
When Liz left that day, Max didn't understand...He took him a long time to realize that he had deeply hurt her!...Later he had found out that Liz had a hard complex because of her social condition and her poverty and she never overcame it.
After the check thing, she never accepted to talk to him, not even take his phone calls. Never again she accepted his invitations.
He had to understand that despite their feelings, even if they never talked about them, nothing would be the same because of that check. Maybe she was just a Parker but no one could buy her though.
But tonight...15 years later....there was that kiss...Is this a kiss from an old friend?...No. Is this a kiss from a futur lover? No.
His experience told him that Liz was different from his ex-wife. He shared with her a short but real passion, he had had that with some women he dated after his divorce...but the kiss Liz just gave him has nothing to do with what he had in the past...
That kiss was pure dynamite.
And Max didn't understand that behavior from a girl who was as unreachable as a fortress. What was she really looking for? She was a mystery for him.
Anyway, it seems that the next hours will bring to him a pleasure that he wasn't expecting.
A slap on his back brought him back to the reality "Do you find that the music is too loud? Is that the reason why you're hiding in a secluded corner?"
"Oh, Michael! Hi....Already finished?" Max asked shaking warmly Michael's hand.
"I have to breathe. You know music is very physical!"
"I bet...I remember that!"
"Tell me Max, what's going on in your life? I saw you with a lovely girl earlier, who is she?" Michael asked.
"Come on Mike, you didn't recognize her?" Max questionned glancing all around the hall.
"Why should I? From the stage I saw a fantastic figure but that's all! I couldn't see very well."
"You saw enough" Max groaned.
"You're right. That seemed very hot for a kiss...Come on tell me!" Michael begged "Who were you kissing so passionately?"
"Liz Parker" Max confessed in low voice.
"Liz Parker??" Michael repeated dumbfounded. "Are you kidding? The Joker? Our so irritated little punky?"
"Absolutely! And believe me, she didn't improve her temper!"
"Well...well...I'm going to judge by myself since she's coming toward us.....Oh..no....She's about to leave.."
Swaying her hips like a panther, Liz was walking toward the exit.
"If I were you, I would be on my guard. Who knows, maybe she has a bicycle chain hidden in her purse? The last time she had hit your head, this time, maybe she had decided to tear it off."
"I've been more than lucky, that's true." Max said thoughtful. "Ok, Mike enough talking about Liz...the pause is finished..go back to your music."
Michael slap friendly his shoulder and walked away. Michael just left than Max was looking at the door from where Liz just walked out.
He never thought that he would settle things with her tonight, maybe not even during the weekend, but he couldn't let her go.....Not after the kiss she gave him.
He ran to catch her up and found her at the parking lot. She was opening the door of a fabulous red sport car. A design that fitted perfectly with the woman she became.
He walked toward her; when she heard his steps she lifted her head.
Despite her success, despite the time, she always had that angel face, that transparent look he always knew in her eyes. Two deep black lakes where was seething the rage of life.
Was she still fiercely an outsider despite her professionnal success? Seeing her tonight, he couldn't believe it. He read enough about her to doubt that she was still playing that role.
And he was going to remind her that her success was not an excuse to let the old friends down....it shouldn't be an excuse to forget her debt either.
He came beside her and put his hand on the top of the car "Fifteen years have passed....and here we are again in a parking lot." he said watching for her reaction.
She throw her purse on the seat casually and took her time to turn around toward him *
Was he going to talk about what happened 15 years ago? Or did he came to claim something more than a kiss?* she thought anxiously.
"Honestly, I don't know what I'm doing here tonight." she said
"Come on Liz, you came for the Elder reunion."
"Ah yeah! Stupid me!"
"Do you know that Mike didn't recognize you?"
"Thanks! Did I grow that old?"
"No...You changed...That's different."
"Do you really think so?"
"You, more than anyone else, has the answer!"
"Ok..I changed my look. I have expensives clothes, I comb my hair and I put some makeup on my face...since at the high school..."
At school, except her punky clothing it was impossible to ignore, he never paid attention if Liz had make her face up or not, he had so many things to think about. And no one could approach her, she was like a wild animal, she never let anyone tame her.
"If you think that that was easy for me to attend your snobish school giving the poor area I was living in? I did my best to survive in your world Max and I fought very hard to go out from mine"
"It's an old story now Liz, you don't live there anymore!"
"A past like mine can't be erased so easily Max. And believe me, the professionnal success has nothing to do with that. It's written in my mind forever."
She looked into his eyes "Do you even know who I am? Who is hiding behind Liz Parker?" she asked.
Max chuckled, he liked that sort of game they were playing.
"Did you keep that habit to undress in front of men when you're playing at the pool?"
"Would you be pleased if I answered yes?"
She sat down on the leather seat of her car.
"Are you virgin?" he asked, unable to restrain himself.
"I'm sure you would be pleased to know about that too."
*
She's so talented to return my questions!* he thought.
"Is that all what you want to know?....In that case, I'm leaving.."
"So soon? Why are you so eager to leave this reunion?"
"Dallas is far, my dear. And I have a ton of files waiting for me."
*
She's going to leave..I should have known!*
"One more time you let me down...you're escaping the parking lots"
"Me? Absolutely not!"
"Are you sure? You forget too quickly!"
Furious she climbed out of her car "What do you want now? Do you want that we make it here?"
"Make what here? What do you mean?"
He was really embarrassed and dug his hands in his pockets, thus she wouldn't see them trembling. She was leaning against the car and looking at him with an arrogant look.
"Are we going to stay and fight all night long on this parking lot?"
"Do you want us to go back to the club to talk?" he offered.
"After our kiss? OUT OF QUESTION! Let's the others wondering where we are, what are we doing? Gossip will keep them busy!" she said smiling. She was calm now.
Despite his envy to not push her, he couldn't help but question "Do you want to leave because of our kiss earlier or because of what happened 15 years ago?"
Liz shivered. She lifted her face to the sky, enjoying the stars of that summer night. *
He knows me so well! He read my thought like a open book!*
Overwhelmed by the question, she bent her head on her arms. The silence was heavy....too much emotion...too many remorses...too many regrets....
But as always she didn't let things get the best of herself, she looked at him, proudly "Don't take advantage of my weakness Max. I came because of our past...."
"I came for you Max" she whispered.
Max sighed deeply "Me? Really?"
"Really."
"We never talked since that day, yet."
"I know that you had tried....I should have called you back, but..." she stopped a while trying to find her words. "But I was not...."
Max was silent while she was talking.
"I was not ready. I hadn't enough courage...Maybe I was not adult enough, not yet....to face that memory...that painful memory... The money....our fight....That was too much! I was feeling humilated, Max. Understand me! Of course I needed that money, but I was ashamed to have accepted it....most of all from you."
Max knew that she was telling the truth. He had needed years to understand her motives. Her anger had been so undue...so unexpected too... Tonight, he wanted Liz to give him an explanation. He wanted Liz to give him the reasons of her fury, cause, even if he had understood, he wanted to hear everything from her mouth...Now.
He made a step toward her "Why most of all from me? However, why did you pay me back so quickly? I wouldn't have sent the police after you."
She moved back "You have to understand, Max, that when you are poor, you're ashamed to owe money. That's like a defect, so you hurry to pay the loan back. I'm sure that you knew me enough and that I couldn't live with that debt." she said sadly.
Under the moonlight, Max noticed her neck throbbing, the necklace was lightning and there was something magical in the air.
He liked the couple they were but he shouldn't forget why he came or how she left him. No, it wouldn't take a moolight, a look or an embrace for him to burn his wings again.
"I didn't know you as much as you thought...But I paid the price to learn."
Liz opened the door of her car "You know what? You're an Evans! And believe me in my mouth it's not a compliment." she said contemptly.
"I don't deserve that Liz, but I won't justify myself. Just know that I'm closer from you than from my father."
*
What does he mean?* she wondered.
"Stop that Max! Ok, I want you to know that I'm here to apologize. I'm not asking for your forgiveness, I just want to end that story, to sooth my conscience. You see, my request is selfish."
"To end? I was expecting that our kiss would have been a begining!"
"The begining of what?"
He hadn't expected that question, but he had an answer...easy. He rummaged in his pocket.
"Ah no! Not this paper again!" she exclaimed.
Glad of his effect, Max unfolded the little piece of paper.
"This paper is a debt. You wrote it."
"I wrote it under the pressure! I'm not forced to pay it." she cut him off.
"So, according to you, this debt could be unpaid!"
He was using blackmail and she was infuriated "MAX!!! I was only 17 years old! I was at the edge of the breakdown. I could have promised to you the moon if you wanted it...."
"But you didn't promise me the moon, Liz..."
He made a step toward her "You promised me......Your body" he whispered and took her hand in his.
They heard someone gasp in the night.....
TBC...IF YOU WANT IT......................................................
the way he looks into her eyes.....
