In the beginning

Liz Parker had never been one of those girls that went weak at the knees for a bad boy. She preferred her men to be smart, reliable and loyal. She didn’t want to experience the butterflies in the stomach or the nervous fluttering of her heart because honestly, it just didn’t sound too healthy. No, Liz certainly didn’t want some bad boy coming along and disrupting her life. She was perfectly content with her lot in life. She had a nice family, excellent friends, a reasonable job and apartment plus an adorable cat called Pippin.
Oh and then there was Adrian. Adrian Linwood was the poster child for the perfect boyfriend. He was not only smart, reliable and loyal, he was also so good looking that he put Michelangelo’s David to shame. There was only one problem with Adrian and really it was just a teeny little problem. A problem that mainly Maria couldn’t stand. And it wasn’t really even a problem more a microscopic flaw. He was just a little…
“Boring!” Maria Deluca stated in disgust. “I swear chica, Michael fell a sleep in ten seconds flat. And that is a record even for Michael!”
“Adrian isn’t boring!” Liz defended her boyfriend half-heartedly. They had had this conversation way too many times and Liz was getting slightly tired of it. Adrian wasn’t boring, okay so maybe he was a little boring sometimes but then there were times when he was enthralling. With Adrian, Liz knew exactly where she stood. There was no second guessing or fears that he might be seeing somebody else or that he was going to disappear out of her life without so much as a word. No, with Adrian, Liz was safe. Their relationship was comfortable and safe just the way Liz liked it.
“What you’re experiencing now is called denial. Max, girlfriend, back me up here. Max?” Maria waved a hand in front of Max’s face. “Hello? Earth to Max?”
Liz’s smile softened as she looked at her ex boyfriend. It had been four years since they had broken up. It had been hard at first, almost unbearable but she had gotten over him and in the last three years they had built a strong friendship, a friendship that Liz valued greatly.
“When is she getting here?” Liz asked, relieved to be able to change the subject. The she in question being Serena Macalister, Max’s girlfriend of two years. She watched in amusement as Max’s ears began to turn pink with the embarrassment of being caught out.
“She said she wanted to surprise me” Max mumbled, his eyes still firmly glued on the entrance of The Crashdown. “I don’t like surprises. All I wanted to do was pick up my girlfriend from the airport and then get her into the back seat of my…” He flushed a darker shade of pink when he noticed that Maria and Liz were both staring at him with raised eyebrows. “I’m gonna shut up now,”
“Smart move, Romeo” Maria said with a roll of her eyes, “Now if we could get back to the subject! Max, would you please tell Liz that her boyfriend is boring!”
“Ugh! Maria, do we have to talk about this?” Liz groaned. The topic of conversation was quickly growing old and Liz knew that if she allowed herself to even think about Maria‘s words, she would start questioning her relationship with Adrian and then she would have doubts. Doubts that would lead to questions such as why was she with him? Liz asked herself the same question often but then she remember that Adrian was never going to break her heart. And he loved her, she knew he did since he told her every chance he got while she mumbled a quick ‘me too’.
“Yes we have to talk about this! As your best friends, its mine and Max’s…” She elbowed Max in the stomach to get his attention. “responsibility to help you see the light! Right, Max?”
“Adrian isn’t that…” He stopped mid sentence and abruptly got to his feet.
“Uh oh, his Serena senses must be tingling,” Liz laughed as she watched Max moving towards the front of The Crashdown. The bell rang as the door was pushed opened to reveal Serena. Liz watched in amusement as the couple stood still as they absorbed each other before there was a shriek of delight and Serena flew across the room into Max’s arms. Liz felt a pang of jealousy as she watched the embracing couple. Serena and Max were so happy and in love that she couldn’t help but envy them a little.
“Jeez, do those have two have to be so nauseating?” Maria asked wrinkling her nose in disgust. “Get a room already!”
“That was the plan!” Max said with a grin. Serena was firmly attached to his side and glowing with happiness.
“Max!” Serena said, pretending to be outraged. She beamed at Liz and Maria before embracing them. “Are you still up for that sleepover tonight, Liz? I bought While You Were Sleeping, Pretty Woman and Dirty Dancing with me.”
“Sounds great!” Liz nodded with a smile. She had been looking forward to this night with Serena for ages. Unlike Maria, Serena didn’t find the need to constantly bitch about Adrian or attempt to set her up on blind dates with hopeless losers. Okay, so Serena hadn’t met Adrian yet and she didn’t know anyone outside of the gang in Roswell but that wasn’t the point.
There was gasp of horror from Max, who looked slightly aghast at the idea of losing his girlfriend for the night. “I thought we were going to have our own private sleepover tonight!”
“But I thought that you and the guys were going to be watching the hockey game” Serena said with a frown. “You told me that you were going to be watching the game all night.”
“I am but I thought you would be watching it with me.” Max said with a pout, hoping that the puppy dog eyes would make Serena rethink her plans.
“Pfft. You mean, you thought that I would be waiting on you hand and foot. Well, think again buddy cause I‘m staying at Liz‘s tonight.” Serena stated. She ruffled his hair affectingly, “But we’ve got all of the afternoon and we could…”
Serena didn’t get to finish her sentence as Max heaved her to feet and was dragging her out of The Crashdown. Serena waved and called back, “I’ll see you later, Liz. Bye Maria!”
Maria rolled her eyes again, “Ugh. They are such teenagers. Last time Serena was here, me and Michael caught her and Max making out in our laundry room!”
Liz raised an eyebrow, “What were you and Michael planning do in laundry room?”
“Laundry,” Maria said but the blush that stained her cheeks suggested that laundry had been the last thing on the agenda. “Anyway, I better get going as well. My mom wanted me to drop in and see her because apparently I’ve been neglecting my daughterly duties. Have fun tonight!”
The unmistakable scent of cedar oil and rose petals filled Liz’s senses as Maria hugged her quickly. “And remember, if Serena offers you a margarita say no! We don’t want a repeat performance of the last time you two got a little too chummy with tequila and co.” Maria grinned wickedly at Liz. “Then again, I don’t think Adrian has ever met your dark side.”
“I don’t have a dark side, Maria!” Liz said with a groan. Her cheeks were burning as she remembered the night her and Serena had overindulged themselves with margaritas. It had seemed like a good idea at the time.
“Sure, you don’t chica.” Maria said not sounding at all convincing.
“I thought you had to get going”
“Crap. I do, I do. Behavior tonight!”
Before Liz could even say bye, Maria was out the door. She smiled. Life was good, it wasn’t perfect but it was good enough to leave her with a feeling of contentment. Yep, life was good!

“Are you sure Max doesn’t mind you staying with me tonight?” Liz asked Serena as she dropped another couple of chocolate bars into the shopping cart. The shopping cart already contained two tubs of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, four different types of chips, pop corn and cookies.
“Oh please, he‘s too busy watching that stupid hockey game!” Serena said with a roll of her eyes and a disgusted tut. “As I was leaving he patted me on the head and told me to behavior. I felt like a poodle or something”
“I’m sure he will make it up to you tomorrow,” Liz stated as she added some more junk food to the cart.
Serena shrugged, “Maybe. Anyway enough about Max and me. Tell me about this Adrian. He sounds nice.”
Liz groaned slightly, she had hoped that she could avoid talking about Adrian for at least a night. It wasn’t that she didn’t like Adrian because she did, she liked him a lot. It was just that Maria’s continuous bitching about him had put her on the edge. “He is nice,”
“Wow, you sound like you’re madly in love with him,” Serena said sarcastically, “Come on Parker, you can do a little better then nice? Do you want me to suggest some words?”
Liz couldn’t help smiling nostalgically when Serena called her Parker, there had only ever been one other person that had called her Parker and that had been Sean Deluca and it had been three years since he had left Roswell without so much as a see ya later, he had just disappeared one night.
His Aunt Amy would sometimes drop little pieces of new information about him into conversation. For example, two months ago Amy had told Liz that Sean was now living in Montana and was working as a firefighter. It was hard to imagine Sean doing something so normal and so legal.
Sometimes Liz would miss him more then she cared to admit and other times she would hate him for leaving. Her feelings were in constant turmoil whenever she thought about him and she hated it. She hated not being able to understand herself and her feelings where he was concerned.
“Ow! That hurt, Serena.” Liz rubbed her arm where Serena had pinched her out of her thoughts.
“Yeah, well you could at least pretend to listen to me.” Serena said with a roll of her eyes. “So where were we? Oh yeah, Adrian. Come on girl, give me some details. Is he short? Tall? Eye color? Shoe size? Don’t hold out on me,”
“He’s tall, about the same height as Max. Blonde and he has…” Liz hesitated and frowned. She couldn’t remember what color eyes he had. She was a horrible, horrible girlfriend. Most likely the worst girlfriend in the world and if there was an award for being the worst girlfriend possible then it would be won by her. “I think we should get a bottle of tequila!”
“Oh yay! Margaritas, yum!” Serena said, clapping her hands together. “But I kind of promised Max that I wouldn‘t let you mislead me again ‘cause margarita is the drink of evil. Hold on a second, what just happened in that head of yours?”
“I just came to the realization that I’m the worst girlfriend on the planet. And hey, you’re the one that gets me into trouble!”
Serena ignoring the last part of Liz’s sentence and forced on the worst girlfriend part, “Why are you the worst girlfriend?”
“I can’t remember what color eyes Adrian has and I should know what color eyes my boyfriend has since it is a something a girlfriend, at least a good girlfriend, would know.” Liz explained.
“You are not the worse girlfriend in the world, Liz. Don’t try and give yourself a title you don’t deserve.” Serena said, “I bet there are hundreds of guys that have girlfriends a lot worse then you. I mean, do you beat Adrian with a frying pan or sleep with other guys behind his back?”
“Well no but…”
“But what?” Serena asked with a raise eyebrow. “Liz, you’re beautiful, smart and just a all round great person to be with. I’m willing to bet anything that Adrian is over the moon that you are his girlfriend and don’t try and do the whole modest mouse act because you know that you‘ve gorgeous and I mean that in a completely non lesbian way,”
“Ugh, can we please just leave this topic of discussion until I’ve had a margarita and we’ve watched one of the chick flicks?” Liz said as she blushing before mumbling to herself, “And to think, I thought you would be less annoying then Maria.”
“Max says that I’m adorably annoying,” Serena said with a grin.
Liz snorted, “Max says a lot of stupid things,”
“Hey!”
Liz rolled her eyes as she added the tequila to the cart. “Right, I think that that is everything.”
“I guess that means its party time at the Parker residence,” Serena laughed.
Liz groaned at the lameness of Serena’s comment, “Max isn’t the only one that says a lot of stupid things,”
“You’re lucky that I love ya Parker otherwise I would totally kick your ass, Muhammad Ali style.” Serena punched the air playfully and danced from foot to foot, “You know, float like a butterfly, sting like a bee!”
There was another groan from Liz, “Serena, I swear you spend too much time in the sun. It must have melted a couple of brains cells or something.”
“You know that…” Serena’s sentence was cut off by the ringing of her cell phone. “Its Max,” Serena stated with a smile at Liz before she answered. “Hey Max, how‘s the hockey game going?” There was a pause. “We’re in the supermarket buying enough junk food to feed a small army. Will you still love me if I end up getting as fat as a whale?” There was another pause and then Serena laughed huskily into the phone. “I miss you too…”
Liz watched with a sigh as Serena walked away, talking lovingly to Max. She tried to ignore that prickle of jealousy and sense of longing. Sometimes she wished that her and Adrian were a little more like Serena and Max. Okay, so the whole long distance thing that the couple had going on sucked royally but they were in love and they didn’t care who knew it.
There and then, Liz made a silent promise. She was going to be the best possible girlfriend she could be for Adrian. She was going to do everything in her power to make sure that their relationship lasted and nothing was going to stand in her way.
And at number one on her list of things to do was to find out what color eyes Adrian had.
