A/N: Hi everyone. I don't have time to thank you all for reading this and leaving feedback. I know there are a few lurkers who have decided to post kind words and I am grateful for that.

Ok, so yeah, I'll have to post and run cause I have a class in 20 mins and I thought it would be a good surprise to give you a chapter a day early.

And just an FYI, I have till Chapter 12 written already.

Thanks again. *hugs*

CHAPTER TEN

Lunch that weekend with the Evans was quite exciting. Michael and Maria announced to the entire family that they have just gotten engaged. Philip and Diane were so happy for their eldest. Isabel and Liz were “ooohing” and “ahhhing” at the 2 carat pink diamond that Maria wore on her finger. Max, on the other hand just observed everyone. And once again, he envied his brother.

“So do you have a date in mind?” Isabel asked.

“Well we haven’t discussed it yet but I want to have a summer wedding.” Maria replied after a quick glance at Michael.

Michael only grinned. The wedding was going to be Maria’s day. He was happy to let her decide whatever she wanted to have on her day.

“Actually, we haven’t really talked about the details. I’m still reeling from the shock that this man finally proposed.” Maria commented to which everyone laughed.

“Although, I do know that he would want his siblings to be a part of this special ceremony. So…” Maria turned to face Isabel, “will you be my maid of honor?”

Isabel gasped, “Are you serious?”

Maria only nodded.

“Oh my gosh! I would be my pleasure, Maria.”

“I don’t have a sister so I don’t know who else to ask. And this way, we’d be able to hang out more when the planning gets started.” Maria said.

Michael kissed her temple, grateful that his fiancée was including his family into the wedding party.

“And of course, Max, you gotta be my best man.” Michael stood up and went to the other side of the table and stood in front of Max with his arms outstretched.

“Of course, bro.” Max stood up and gave his brother a manly hug.

After the two boys shared a hug, Maria was quick to add. “And Liz, I want you to be one of my bridesmaids, if that’s ok with you.”

Liz was surprised; she wasn’t expecting to be included in the bridal entourage since she wasn’t really a part of the Evans clan.

“Um, I’d be honored, Maria. Thank you.” Liz said and looked at Max to see him smiling brightly at Maria.

Max knew what his brother’s fiancée was doing and he was thankful for the gesture. He turned to Liz then and gave her a small smile.

“Oh and we have to get my cousin to be one of the groomsmen.” Maria told Michael after he sat back down on his seat. “Remind me to give him a call when we get home.”

“I can’t believe one of my babies is settling down.” Diane spoke.

“Mom!” All three Evans kids whined.

“What? Can’t I get a bit sentimental?”

“Reserve that at the wedding, Mom.” Michael said.

“Don’t worry, Diane. Sunday lunches will be compulsory.” Maria assured with a laugh.

Diane had to smile at that. And lunch went on without a hitch.
***
As they were driving home, Liz shifted in her seat to face Max.

“Did I tell you that I’m having an interview about the restaurant in a couple of days?”

Max gave a quick glance at Liz before returning his eyes on the road. “What? No you didn’t. That’s great, Liz.”

“I know. I’m so excited. I thought I told you about it.” Liz was grinning.

“So where are they having the interview?”

“At the restaurant. They want to take shots of it too.”

“You do know that once that interview comes out, you’re going to have a whole lot more customers.”

“Yeah, that’s why I’ve got you to help me.” Liz teasingly looked at him.

Max returned the gaze and both friends just laughed.
***
“So you’ve got everything? Toothbrush?” Liz asked for the nth time.

“Yes, Mom.” Max rolled his eyes.

The two were at the airport both waiting for Michael.

“What time is your interview?”

“Around noon.” Liz answered, wringing her hands together.

Max covered her hands in one of his. “Are you nervous?”

“No.” Liz said a little too quickly for her own taste.

Max chuckled. “You’ll do fine. Food is your forte.”

“I know, it’s just…this is the first time my restaurant will get recognition.”

“What are you talking about? Elizabeth’s is well known already.”

“Yeah, but that’s mostly because of you. And all those girls that want to see the hunky Max Evans.” Liz said that in a high-pitched voice while batting her eyelashes at her best friend.

Max could only laugh. “That’s not true. People love your food, Liz. Don’t ever doubt yourself.”

Liz smiled. This is why Max was her friend. He always knew how to make her feel better.

“Hey guys.” Michael greeted the two. “Ready to get out of here, Max?” he goaded, waiting for his brother’s response.

Max just narrowed his eyes at his brother. In all honesty, ever since Michael helped him realize that he was in love with Liz, he’s been scared of the two being in the same room, or even just within hearing distance of each other.

“Yeah, Mike. You go on ahead.” Max practically pushed his brother towards the check – in counter.

“See ya, Liz.” Michael leaned forward and kissed the petite woman on the cheek.

“Have a safe flight.” Liz replied.

“So, I’ll see you at the end of the week.” Max said after Michael left.

Liz nodded.

Max wanted to kiss her so badly but knew that he couldn’t…yet. He was resolved, as soon as he comes back from New York, he was going to tell Liz how he feels about her.

So instead of giving her the most passionate kiss she will ever have and leave her dazed and breathless from it, he leaned in and engulfed her in a tight embrace.

Liz was baffled by the gesture but nevertheless, hugged her best friend back just as strongly.

“I’ll miss you.” Max whispered in her ear before letting go. Without another word, he turned and headed to where Michael went.

“Max!” Liz called out.

Max turned around to face Liz.

Liz gave him a sweet smile then said, “I’ll miss you too.”
***
The past two days that Max was in the east coast, Liz pretty much just worked at making the restaurant look spic and span for the interview.

That day itself, she was a bundle of nerves as she looked like a chicken with its head cut off running all around the place to ensure that everything was ready.

Liz still felt anxious but Max’s words rang in her ears. People loved her food and the restaurant was already well-known for it. The interview will just be icing on the cake.

The crew for the show came about half an hour past 11 o’clock. They set up immediately while Liz got to know the person interviewing her.

“Hi, I’m Cal Langley. You’ve really got a nice place here, Ms. Parker.” The man said as he looked around the restaurant. He also instructed one of the cameramen to take some still shots of the establishment.

He was older, probably the age of Liz’s father. And he clearly screamed Hollywood, with his dark blue suit that probably cost thousands, and the dark sunglasses that he had no intention of taking off even after he has entered Elizabeth’s.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you Mr. Langley. And please call me Liz.” She said with a smile.

“Alright Liz, then I’m just Cal.” He sat on the seat situated across her and fixed the mic on the lapel of his coat.

One of the women in Cal’s staff also adjusted the mic on Liz’s uniform.

“So are you ready?” Cal asked.

“Yes.” Liz nodded and got comfortable in her seat.

“Ok, so tell me about yourself Liz, how Elizabeth’s started.”

“Well, I grew up in Roswell, New Mexico with my grandmother. She owned a diner and we lived in the apartment upstairs. I studied to be a microbiologist, but when my grandmother died, she left the diner to me. I couldn’t keep up with school and work so I decided to sell the diner and move out here.” Liz told Cal.

Cal then asked, “And what about your parents?”

Liz felt uneasy but she did agree to this. She took a deep breath and went on, “It’s just me and my grandmother.”

“What do you mean?”

“My grandmother said they weren’t fit to be parents. They left me with her and the next thing she knew about them was that they died a couple of months later.”

“Was it an accident?”

“No, it wasn’t.”

“They were murdered?”

Liz shook her head, “Look is this really necessary?”

“Well no, but we’re trying to know more about you.”

“Can we just move on to talking about the restaurant?”

Cal let that one go and began to ask questions about Elizabeth’s. “Ok, so how did the restaurant start?”

Liz began to relax a bit and went on to tell the tale of how the now famed restaurant began. “My grandma taught me how to cook. And I still had the money from selling the diner. So I figured, I should put it to good use, something that would be about her too. And here we are.”

“Yes, the food here really is fabulous. So how did Max Evans start working here?”

Liz was surprised at that. “Uh, we’re friends. He helps out from time to time.”

“And you’re just friends? Could he also be the reason why your restaurant is so famous? Because the Evans come here a lot, and fans could have a taste of Max serving them.”

“No, that’s not why.”

“The two of you have been seen being too close for comfort nowadays. Is there something more going on between you too?”

“We’re just friends”, Liz said getting agitated.

“Then why were you heard yelling at the airport a few days ago, telling Max that you’ll miss him?”

“Huh? How—?”

“Actions speak louder than words, Liz.” Cal sneered.

Liz stood up abruptly. “You need to leave.”

“The interview’s not done. Besides, we’re airing live, hun.”

“I am not your honey. Now get out.”

“Aww, come on, Liz. Thousands of viewers would love to know more about you and Max.”

“Get out!” Tears were already falling down Liz’s face.

Patrons began turning their heads to watch the commotion and two of Liz’s wait staff rushed to her.

Sarah pushed the swinging door to the kitchen open and poked her head in. “Wayne, we need you out here.”

Wayne was one of the cooks in the kitchen, but he also had a huge built. He looked more like a bouncer than a chef.

Megan, another waitress, reached Liz and led her away from the scene.

“I think you and your crew better leave.” Sarah demanded.

“Says who?”

“Says me.” Wayne said while brandishing a huge cleaver whose very sharp blade glinted in the light.

“Fine. We got what we wanted.” Cal grinned creepily and ordered everyone he brought with him to pack up.

As Cal was about to step out of the restaurant, he looked back at Liz who was already crying her eyes out.

“I thought this was an interview for a food show.” Liz spoke.

Cal simply shrugged and said, “I lied”, and he walked out without another word.

A/N:OMG, hahahahaha. Your fbs were funny. Thank you so much for your words and for taking the time to post them.

Carrie - Yeah, I think Cal always has something sleazy up his sleeve. And don't worry, I'm not that bad...most of the time.

Lena7 - Thanks for the feedback. I can't reply much to what you wrote, don't want to ruin the surprise just yet.

Emma - Don't worry, things won't turn out bad...for now.

RoninBehr - Remember that Max and Liz have been hounded a lot because of their "friendship". Almost everyone thinks they're too close to be "just friends". And while Liz always tells Max that it doesn't affect her, it does, but she chooses to not make a big deal about it. However, a person can only take so much before he or she breaks down. I knew at least one person would think I was referring to Sean, but no, he's not the cousin.

pandas2001 - Ah, that remains to be seen. But with how Max reacted to Michael's accidental kick, I'm thinking he'll be going into overdrive with this one.

Kylie - LMAO, you HAD to post the lyrincs?! Torture? Moi?

yayaliens - Yeah, I loved the airport scene too.

Michelle - Yup, Cal has that effect on the people from Roswell all the time, doesn't he? You're on to something with your theories, but you're also a little off base on Liz's reasoning.

dreamsatnight - Thanks for coming out of lurkdom. And LOL, your feedback was hilarious.

Dziumka - Like Max could really stay away for long.

Alien_Friend - The interview has already been aired.

EVE - There are some people who would stoop so low to get what they want, and Cal is one of them.

Natalie36 - Hmmm, I don't think Cal really put a damper on Max's plans. More will be explained in the upcoming parts, just not in this one.

veronica - Yeah, I think everyone wanted to "bitch slap" Cal back to where he came from.

roswell3053 - Thanks for the feedback.

RiceKrispy - Yeah, poor Liz, but don't worry, Max will come to the rescue, as usual.

sarahmlover - LOL, but at least with Throwdown..., it's still a show to feature the food they're making. That's twice now that Flay has been mentioned in fbs.

Michelle17 - You read my mind.

Blink1lit - Thanks for the fb.

Cocogurl - Yeah, Cal is always a bastard in fics, I wonder why. Yup, Liz's insecurities are rolling around in her mind now.

Now on to the story. There's a scene in the next part that was taken from one of my fave movies FROST  . And on that note, let me put up a disclaimer now. I don't own that movie, but I sure wish I did. To those who watched it with me, I want to see if you'll catch it. Aahhh, good times. I hope they release that on DVD so that every time I'll watch it, I'll remember that night. *sigh*

Ok, enough reminiscing. Enjoy the new part.

CHAPTER ELEVEN

Max and Michael got out of the car and immediately, paparazzi started flashing their cameras to take pictures of the infamous Evans brothers.

Both boys weren’t even fazed anymore, they were used to it. It was their work after all, due to their handsomely rugged, boyish looks. Max with his jet black hair, chiseled jaw, hazel eyes with lashes that make women envious, and a body that many men would want to posses, and many women who obsess over it. And Michael has those sandy locks that he so immaculately takes care of, he was tall, has great physique, the kind that makes a woman feel protected, and that scowl that he thinks wards other people off but instead makes him come across as a sexy brooding man.

The two siblings entered the club and while the swarm of photographers remained outside, they were replaced by the sexily clad women who went up to greet the two good looking men.

“Hey Michael.”

“Hi Max.”

Smiles and nods were exchanged as the two moved through the throng of people to get to a booth.

They haven’t even settled in their seats before three women decided to trap them in the booth. Michael wasn’t complaining as he put his arm around the blonde that plastered her body to his. But Max was a different story.

A redhead and a brunette, both thin and dazzling, chose to have Max sit in between them and they were literally throwing themselves at him. Max grimaced as they started to practically shove their silicone implants at his face and scooted to the edge of the seat to try to find an escape.

Normally, he wouldn’t have complained. He would have enjoyed the attention and lapped at it in a heartbeat. But now that he knew that he was in love with Liz, every other women fell in comparison to his beautiful best friend. That was how he would always describe her, beautiful, both inside and out.

Max was nursing his beer, his thoughts still on Liz, when he looked over at his brother and saw him almost sucking the face of the blonde who was practically sitting on his lap.

Max grabbed his brother at the nape pulling him away from the woman and glared at him, silently letting him know that he was pissed at his actions. If Maria could see her beau now, he would be in big trouble.

Unfortunately, Michael had no intention of stopping. He intended to fully live his last few days as a bachelor, and that included flirting with every woman in that club, and maybe getting a kiss or two.

Max shook his head and stood up.

“Max, where are you going?” One of the girls asked.

Max looked back at her but he couldn’t even call her by name since he didn’t even bother to ask.

“I’m going to bed.”

The redheaded woman smiled attractively, but to Max, she was anything but that.

“Do you want some company?” she flirted.

“Nope.” Max spoke then walked away.
****
Once he was back in his hotel room, he got ready for bed. He washed his face, a task he did diligently since he has to preserve his source of income. He brushed his teeth of the taste of alcohol from the drinks he took in the club. Then he stripped down to his boxers, throwing his discarded black pants and light blue button down shirt over the armchair in the room. He did a few pushups and lied down on the king sized bed.

He reached for his cell phone that he placed on the night stand after he emptied out his pants pockets. Then he dialed a number he knew by heart.

“Hey.”

“Hey”, the female voice greeted cheerfully from the other end of the line.

“How are you?”

“Good, a little tired, but good.”

“That’s nice.”

“Max?”

“Yeah?”

“I’m glad you called.”

Max grinned.

“How was your day?”

“It was alright. I just came from a club. I think I’m getting too old for it.”

Liz laughed, “You? Never.”

Max smiled upon hearing her laughter. God, did he miss her and to think it has only been three days.

“Yeah, seriously. Earlier some chicks were hitting on me, they even went as far as offering to come back here with me but I turned them down. They were gorgeous but I turned them down!”

“Hmm, you’re right, that isn’t like you. You could have had a ménage trios and you passed up on it? You’d jump any woman that you thought was a bit hot.”

Max winced at that statement. “Ouch. Am I really that bad?”

“Yeah, Max, you are.” Liz giggled.

“Well, since I rejected those two, how about you tell me what you’re wearing.”

“I’m offended. Is that what I’ve resorted to, a second choice?

“Not second, third.”

“Oh yeah, there were two of them.”

“Well now I’m all alone, and you’re the only woman available.”

“Wow, thanks a lot.”

“No, really, what are you wearing?”

Liz’s voice became a bit husky, “Do you really want to know?”

“Uh huh” Max mumbled as he got a bit more comfortable in bed, putting one hand behind his head while the other maintained the phone glued to his ear.

“What if I told you I’m not wearing anything…at all.”

Max was stunned and remained quiet; a mental picture was quickly developing in his head.

“Max?” Liz called his name to see if he was still on the phone after about a couple of minutes of not hearing anything from him.

“Huh?”

“I thought we got cut off.”

“No, no. I’m still here.” Max rushed out. “Are you really naked?”

“And what if I was?” Liz continued to tease.

Max closed his eyes slowly, picturing her svelte petite body in all her naked glory, lying in bed next to him. His mind conjured up the smooth expanse of her skin, how soft it would feel against him; one creamy white thigh draped over his lower anatomy, barely grazing over his—

“Max” Liz stifled a laugh.

“What?” He was mildly irritated that his dream got cut off.

That was when Liz couldn’t hold it in any longer and laughed.

“Man, I thought you were for real.” He was pouting even though he knew she couldn’t see him.

“Max, why in the world would I be talking to you while I’m naked?” said Liz, still giggling.

“I dunno, you were naked that time I bounced on your bed while you were still sleeping.” And that’s when he realized something. “Hey, waitaminute, why were you naked that time? Did you have a date or something?”

“No. Besides whether I had a date or not, it’s none of your business.” Liz replied.

“No fair, I tell you about my dates.”

“That’s your choice, not mine.”

“C’mon, I wanna know.”

“Max, don’t beg, that’s so beneath you.”

“I wanna know, I wanna know, I wanna know—”

“Stop it.”

“I wanna know.”

“Stop.”

“I wanna know.”

“Stop.”

“I wanna—”

“Fine, geez, I…” Liz trailed off.

“You what?” Max was quite eager to find out.

“Don’t laugh.”

“Ok, I won’t laugh.” Max answered in all seriousness.

“I wanted to see what it was like.” Liz said, her eyes squinting with embarrassment as to what she was about to confess.

“To see what’s like…?” Max prodded.

Liz was beginning to blush and was thankful that they weren’t having this conversation face to face. “You know, sleeping naked.”

“So you didn’t have a date then?”

Liz exhaled loudly, “That’s what matters to you, my love less love life? Thanks, Max.”

“No, Liz.”

Liz sighed, “Why did you call tonight, Max? I doubt that it was to have phone sex with me.”

“What makes you think I wouldn’t want that?”

Liz chuckled, “Not that again. Come on, Max, it’s getting late and I’m sure you have an early morning tomorrow.”

“Not really, I do have an afternoon flight back home though.”

“I thought you and Michael needed to stay till the end of the week?”

“Michael is only concerned about hooking up before getting hitched. And frankly, I don’t want to still be here when Maria finds out what he’s been doing.”

“You got a point there. So do you need me to pick you up tomorrow?”

”Would you?”

“Of course.”

“Thanks, Liz. What would I do without you?”

“You’d die.”

“True.”

“SMS your flight details and I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Alright. See you tomorrow. Night.”

“G’night.”

Max ended the call and quickly sent his flight’s arrival information through a text message to Liz’s number. A short while later he fell asleep with a smile on his face as he dreamt of his best friend right next to him, naked.

A/N: Thank you to everyone (feedbackers and lurkers) reading this.

Lena7 - Yup, Max will have to fight for what he wants in this one.

yayaliens - Thanks for your fb. Liz didn't tell Max about what happened because she didn't want to bother him with it.

Dziumka - Thanks for the feedback.

Kylie - OMG, did you really fall asleep at work? LOL. Yeah, I wouldn't joke around with Max either...well, I would, but I would mean every word. And I thought you would've gotten the Frost scene. You weren't watching the movie, were you? Looking at Jason much? Ok, remember that club scene, the one that Erin was in, that was what it was about. Jack grabbed Mike Landry's character by the nape and he stared at him because he was making a complete fool of himself in front of the reporter (forgot her name). Oh, and if you reacted this way to this part, I can't wait to see how you'd react to the one below, and the one after that. Hmmm, I think I might need to run and hide.

Alien_Friend - Ah, you won't have to wait too long to find out about Liz's feelings.

sarahmlover - True but it's going to get more complicated before they do get into each other's bed. But at least you now know this will have a dreamer ending.

carolina_moon - You pointed out a really good point. Max is the model, he has women throwing themselves at him and yet he's pining over a simple woman back home.

Emma - Hi, thanks for the fb. Don't worry, Max will find out about it, like right now.

pandas2001 - Yeah, Maria will definitely find out. Remember, she's more popular than him. She has more people.

EVE - There are things/thoughts that Liz have that will be revealed later on, including why she didn't tell Max.

roswell3053 - Max is very serious about his feelings for Liz. Michael, on the other hand, is a different story.

Michelle - Me? Wicked? LOL! Ok, I'll give you one more chapter that will bring you to your happy place, how about that?

Carrie - Oh wow, you even went to those lengths to read a part? Thank you, that's really flattering. Hope you're having fun on your vacation.

Cocogurl - Yup, Max is at that stage where he's already thinking about his future. As for Michael, not quite there yet. And Maria has her ways. Why do you think she was in NY?

Enough talk. I know you'd rather get on to the next chapter, especially when you find out what it's about.

CHAPTER TWELVE

Maria entered the lobby of the 5-star hotel that the Evans brothers were staying in. It was really early in the morning as she decided to fly right after her concert. The sun hadn’t even rose yet when they took off.

She walked up to the clerk at the front desk and melodiously gave her name. The minute the man looked up to greet the guest, he became flustered, clearly he was a fan of the celebrity standing before him.

“Uh, yes, Ms. Deluca, I’ve got your room all ready for you.” He said while glancing back and forth between her and the computer screen.

While waiting for her key, Maria scanned the lobby and was surprised to see Max walking down the steps.

It was obvious to her that Max had not seen her yet so she quickly approached him.

Max didn’t notice her coming nearer and she bumped into his shoulder to get his attention.

“Hey, watch where—” Max was ready to yell but when he saw who the other person was, he broke into a grin.

Max laughed as he gave the woman a brief hug. “Maria, I thought you weren’t arriving till tomorrow. How was your flight?”

Maria broke into a huge grin and returned the gesture. “It was good. What are you doing down here this early? I would think you wouldn’t be up till noon at least.”

“Yeah, but the ad’s done so I wanted to get a flight back ASAP.” Max replied.

“Oh…” Maria nodded. “You saw it huh?”

Max wore a curious expression on his face, “Saw what?”

Upon seeing his questioning look, Maria decided to tread carefully. After all, Max was known to blow up, especially when it concerned his family…and Liz.

“Max, did Liz tell you anything about an interview?”

“Yeah, she told me about it before we left. I think it was for some food show.” Max stated, not understanding where Maria was going with this.

“No, Max. She was tricked. It was for some sleazy talk show that totally ambushed her into talking about your relationship.”

“What?!”

“Don’t worry, she kept telling them that you were just friends. But some of the words the host kept going on about her were clearly hitting her below the belt.”

Max was starting to breathe hard. Liz needed him. He had to leave New York, NOW.

“What—what did they ask?”

“Some things about her family, and you.”

Max nodded. “How was she during the interview?”

“Not good, Max.” Maria felt sorry for Liz as she watched. She didn’t even know about it, and only came across the show while channel surfing.

“I talked to her last night. She didn’t even say anything.”

“Max, you know her best. But if she didn’t say anything, then maybe she’s gotten over it.”

Max shook his head no. “I need to go home now.”

Maria fished for her phone in her purse, “My label’s jet is still in the hangar. Let me call them real quick and you go pack. How much time do you need?”

“Give me 10 minutes.” And Max raced back up to his hotel room.
***
The minute he landed, his first stop was at the restaurant. It was already a little past lunchtime and he was astounded by how jam-packed it still was.

He went in search of Liz but she wasn’t at any of the tables. He made a dash for her office but he found it empty. So he went into the back. He didn’t even notice the number of eyes that were trained at his every determined step.

On his way to the kitchen, he almost trampled over Megan, one of the waiting staff at Elizabeth’s.

“Max, watch out!” Megan was carrying a tray with several drinks on it as she left the bar. Luckily, she was able to maneuver herself out of Max’s way just in time.

Max moved away but waited for Megan to place the drinks on a table filled with a family of five and get back to the bar to round up some more.

“Megan, where’s Liz?”

Megan stopped and looked at Max sadly. “She’s at home. She hasn’t been coming in for the past couple of days. Sarah’s doing all the catering jobs.”

“Is it because of the interview?”

“I think so.”

Then without saying anything else, Max took off, hailing a cab to head straight home.

The first thing he noticed was how quiet the house seemed. He used his own key to enter Liz’s house and was a bit concerned that Bailey hasn’t come to greet him. Usually that dog was at the door before Max could even turn the knob.

He walked up the stairs and down the hall and opened the door to Liz’s bedroom.

He noticed how dark the room was and was tempted to draw away the curtains like he always does whenever he would catch Liz still asleep. But this time, he didn’t want to disturb her.

Liz was on her side with her back to the door. Bailey was lying on his dog bed and only raised his head to acknowledge Max before lowering it back down on the cushion.

Max moved to stand by the bed facing Liz. Then he took off his shoes and socks and lied down right beside her. He was taken aback that there were tear tracks dried on her cheeks. He gently lifted his hand to her face and brushed it with the pad of his thumb. His face was close enough that he could feel the breath coming out of her partially opened lips graze his skin.

His heart was aching for his friend. He wasn’t there when she needed him and he vowed to never let that happen again. If he had a job to do, he’d simply bring her along. Elizabeth’s could run smoothly without her. He felt guilty, knowing that the guy tricked her to get the scoop about their relationship because of who he was. If he was just a regular guy, none of this would have happened.

As he continued to lie there, he kept staring at an angel, his angel. And then he too fell asleep.
***
Liz’s eyelids fluttered open, blinking away the fogs of sleep from her mind. She thought back to the incident that happened in the restaurant and wondered if people were still coming. And if they did, did they come for the food, or to see Max?

Max, how would he feel once he found out about that interview? Liz thought. He would definitely be angry, that’s for sure, which was why she hasn’t mentioned it to him. And since he hasn’t brought it up either, she was certain that he didn’t see it.

However, Liz felt guilty for letting her guard down. She was supposed to be used to this by now. But that man, that horrible man, was able to dig up some old wounds that were better left forgotten, causing her to react so heatedly.

Why did he have to ask about her past? Why did he have to bring up her parents? That reporter knew something. He knew who she was.

With all other reporters trying to get the dirt on them, she was supposed to remain her cool, deflect all questions asked about her and Max and just keep going. But she was tricked; she fell for the ploy hook, line and sinker. She could only imagine what the repercussions would be towards Max and his career.

Knowing she should probably check on the restaurant, Liz tried to get up but was puzzled that she couldn’t. She looked down at what could be keeping her to the bed, thinking it was Bailey but was surprised to see an arm wrapped around her waist. And it wasn’t just any arm; it was a muscular one, one that would belong to a man!

Liz shifted as much of her body as she could with the weight of the arm holding her down, to face the man that it belonged to. And when she saw her best friend sleeping peacefully beside her; tears sprung to her eyes.

And no, it was not because of the interview. It was because of the beautiful man lying next to her and the feelings she has for him that she has been so diligently burying deep inside her.

She stared at his serene face. And as much as she tried to control herself, she raised her hand to brush away the hair that was covering his eyes. She smiled a small smile, love for her best friend bubbling up to the surface. If only things were different.

Max began to wake as he slowly opened his eyelids. And what he saw made him think he was still dreaming.

His best friend, his Liz was lying on her side, looking at him. No, she was staring at him and her emotions were swimming freely in her eyes. And the one thing that struck him the most was the love shining in them.

“Liz.”

Liz only smiled. She closed her eyes and moved her head nearer until her lips were almost touching his.

Max didn’t know what was going on. Was he still asleep? Was this all a fantasy?

Liz opened her eyes to look at him, and before she could even think of anything else, she brought her lips to his.

Max was stunned, his eyes widened as he realized that this was no dream. It was really happening. Liz was kissing him. So instead of asking why, he just went with it. This was a gift, this moment was the one thing he always wanted and he would be a fool to stop her now.

Her kisses were tentative, careful, like she was testing out the waters. Though Max wanted more, he was willing to be patient. But for how long, he had no clue. He was holding on by a thread, trying to control himself from doing what he really wanted.

After a few more sweet kisses, Max couldn’t withstand his emotions any longer. He tightened his arm around her, bringing Liz closer if that was possible. His open palm that was caressing Liz’s back formed into a fist, bunching up the hem of her tank top in his hand. He kissed her harder, deepening it, his tongue seeking entrance into her mouth.

Liz gave him access, opening her mouth to him. She reveled in the passion Max was evoking in her. And for just this moment she didn’t want to think, she just wanted to feel.

Max inserted his tongue in her mouth, seeking hers. And when he found it, they dueled, fueling the fires burning inside their flesh. As the hem of her top rode up, Max slid his hand in, heat from his palm touching the softness of her bare back. His leg moved to drape over hers, trapping her with his body.

Liz moved her hand up his chest, feeling the hard muscles underneath his shirt. She moved it higher until her hand reached the back of his neck and she started to run her fingers through the hairs at his nape.

Max moaned when he felt her hand on him. He couldn’t get enough. He was drowning in the sensations of finally kissing Liz, feeling her, touching her. If kissing her was making him go crazy with want, what more when he finally makes love to her?

He wanted to see her unravel in his arms. He wanted to see her face as she rides a high only lovers get. He wanted to please her body, make her scream his name. He wanted to make love to her over and over until she becomes addicted to him.

And then just as quickly as their kissing started, it stopped.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Right after Max went off to pack, Maria called her producer to ask for a favor. She requested to use her recording label’s jet once again but it was her future brother-in-law who needed it. She added that it was urgent and that it was an emergency. Of course, with Maria’s fame, thus making millions of profits for her recording company, no favor can be denied.

When Max came back to the lobby, telling her that he was ready, she used her limo to take him to the hangar. She told the chauffer to drive as fast as he could and while they were en route to the hangar, Maria told Max everything that happened on the show. And that caused Max to get more fidgety. He was anxious to get to Liz since yesterday, more so now with what happened.

Once the plane took off, Maria headed back to the hotel. She was happy to be able to help. Those two definitely needed to get together already. She knew Max was very much in love with Liz and if she believed her instincts, which she always does, she was sure that Max’s best friend returned the feeling.

And just like with Max and Liz’s will-they-won’t-they dance, she trusted her gut and that was what brought her to New York.

Upon arriving back at the hotel, Maria went up to the check-in counter and talked to the flustered clerk again.

“Hi, I was wondering if you can do a tiny, tiny thing for me.”

“Of course, Ms. Deluca. What can I do for you?”

“Well, I’m surprising a friend of mine and would it be possible for you to give me a key card for the room?” Maria said with a seductive smile.

“Uh, I…I c-can’t.” The clerk stuttered.

“It will be our little secret.” Maria said in a singsong voice.

The clerk was clearly torn. He wanted to please his celebrity crush but at the same time, he was scared that he might lose his job over this.

He looked at Maria one more time and that was his undoing. She batted her long eyelashes at the guy. “Please.”

“Oh alright, as long as you don’t tell anyone.”

Maria grinned. “I won’t, I promise. If anyone asks, I didn’t get it from you.”

The clerk gave her the key and she was so happy that Maria kissed his cheek as a token of her gratitude.

Needless to say, the man was dazed and star struck after that.
***
Maria went into her room first and changed into a trench coat, black high heels and nothing else. She wanted to seduce Michael but first, she wanted to see if he behaved.

She used the key card she obtained from the front desk and crept silently into Michael’s room.

The room was dark, but she could make out a lone figure on the bed. She was about to crawl atop the sheets but stopped when something caught on her heel. She reached down and plucked a red lacy bra from one of her stiletto heels. An upset Maria stood at the foot of the bed, her hands on her waist and she was fuming. She breathed deeply and screamed.

“MICHAEL!!!”

Michael immediately sat up, “What? What? What happened?”

“You bastard!” Maria threw the bra straight at his face.

Michael winced and grabbed the offending item. “What?” Michael looked at the bra and threw it on the floor,
“Maria, this isn’t what it looks like.”

“Oh really? Then tell me, Michael, what the fuck is a red bra doing in your room?”

“I dunno.”

“You don’t know? That’s it? You can’t even come up with a lie? To think I passed up on Billy Darden for you.”

“That hippie guitarist? He’s nothing but a fraud! He’s a class A jerk, hottie wannabe” Michael sputtered, angry that Maria even mentioned his name.

Billy Darden was an alternative rock singer who was in the same recording company as Maria. And Michael knew for a fact that Billy wanted Maria due to the numerous times he’s caught the geek drooling after his girlfriend at some of the parties that the label has thrown.

“Well at least he doesn’t cheat on his fiancé!” Maria yelled.

“Like someone would actually want to marry him.” Michael muttered sarcastically.

“Yeah, me.” Maria started to remove her engagement ring off her finger but Michael leapt off the bed, revealing that he was wearing a pair of black pajama pants, and covered her hands in his.

“Don’t you even dare.” Michael said.

“Why not? You were fucking someone else!”

“I wasn’t.” he insisted.

“Alright, prove it.” Maria stared at Michael who intently glared back.

However, Maria was the stronger one when it came to their silent battles. Michael tried his best to hold out but he just couldn’t do it which was why he always lost.

He sighed, “Fine, I made out with some blonde chick…”

Maria was about to spew out some curses but Michael quickly added, “And that was it. Nothing more. I swear.”

She was still angry but Maria’s eyes narrowed at him but suddenly, she began to sport a smile. And Michael was more afraid of that then her hitting him and screaming his ears off.

“Tell you what, I’ll be ok with you `making out’ with some woman,” Maria emphasizing on the making out part by making quotation marks with her fingers in the air. And Michael knew it wouldn’t end there.

“…As long as you’re ok with me making out with Billy.”

“WHAT?!!!”

“Oh, and I’m also leaving my bra in his room.” Maria started to head out of the door and Michael was following right behind her

Maria stopped at the doorway and turned around to face him, making Michael stop in his tracks. “Remember this Michael, anything you can do, I can do too.”

And with a smirk, Maria resumed walking back to her hotel suite, leaving Michael to chase after her.
***
When the need for air became more powerful than the need to feel loved, Liz pulled away though she didn’t get up off the bed nor did she move her hand away from him.

Max did the same; he didn’t want to relinquish his hold on her. He stared at her and was grinning inwardly that she looked so ravished and he was the reason for it.

“Liz?”

“I’m sorry, Max.”

Max was confused upon hearing her words, “What are you being sorry for?”

“For what just happened.”

“You’re sorry that we kissed?”

Liz remained silent.

“Liz? Are you regretting it?”

“No…yes.”

“Why?”

“Because…”

“Because?” Max began running his hand up and down Liz’s back.

“Stop.” Liz said moving her back away from him but causing her to push her body further into him. She removed her hand from where it was and she was trying to move away from his hold but Max wouldn’t let her.

Max stopped rubbing her back but he still held her to him. “Help me out here, Liz. I have no clue as to what’s going on. One minute we were getting hot and heavy and the next you’re pulling away from me.”

“That shouldn’t have happened. It was a mistake.”

“Is that how you see it?” Max asked. He was trying his best not to feel sad or angry but he was beginning to.

“Yes.” Liz whispered.

“WHY?!” Max yelled.

Liz flinched at that. “Because we’re friends.”

“Is that how you feel? Because friends don’t just go about kissing their friends, Liz.” Max wanted to provoke her to say something. He felt her; he felt something coming from her in that kiss and he wasn’t going to let her just sweep it away under a rug.

“Exactly, friends don’t kiss.”

“What if we’re already past that?” Max softly spoke.

“We’re not.”

“Oh I think we are, Liz.”

“Max, don’t.”

“Didn’t you feel it? Don’t you feel what’s going between us? Something’s happening, our relationship is changing. And frankly, I don’t think it’s a bad thing.”

“Yes it is.” Liz began to struggle. She wanted to get away from Max’s hold. She didn’t want to say something that she will regret later on. “Please, let me go.”

“I can’t.”

Liz was surprised at that, clearly hearing the double meaning his words had. She looked straight into Max’s eyes, trying to read him and what she saw stunned her to silence.

“I can’t…because I love you too much to let you go.”

“And you mean too much to me that I can’t risk losing you too.” Liz answered as tears began to spill forth.

Max was flabbergasted, and in that instant, as his mind was trying to grasp what Liz was saying, his hold on her loosened. That allowed Liz to be free from his embrace and she got up off the bed.

Before Max knew it, Liz was already standing on one side of the bed and was getting to ready to leave the room. But he wasn’t going to allow that.

He quickly leapt off the bed and ran for the door, leaning his back against it, his arms spread out as if Liz would really be able to get past him.

“Max, what are you doing?”

“We are not leaving this room until we talk this out.”

“There’s nothing to talk about.”

“Yes there is.” Max looked at her, and realized that something was off. If she was so adamant against moving their relationship to the next level, why was she crying?

“Why are you crying, Liz?”

“Because you’re being so stubborn!”

“I’m fighting for what I want here!” Max replied.

“What is it that you want, Max? Do you want to fuck me, is that it? Fine, come on, let’s do this and get it over with.” Liz answered, grabbing the hem of her tank top to pull it over her head.

“No,” Max walked closer to her and put a hand on hers to stop her from what she was about to do.

He tilted her chin up so she would look at him and he held her face in both of his hands. “I don’t want just sex, Liz. I want to love you and be loved by you. I want to be able to just hold you at night and wake up with you in the morning. I want to be able to finally tell people how much I care for you, how much you mean to me. I want you to feel that you mean the entire world to me and not having you in my life would be torture. I want you, just you.”

Liz was weeping as she fought a war raging inside her. Her heart was screaming out for Max but her head and the fear that was enveloping her whole body was preventing her from telling him how she truly feels.

She began to shake her head no, she knew she was about to cause him pain, but she couldn’t stop herself from doing so. One way or another, things were going to change. She started it, and there was no turning back now.

“Please don’t ask me that. I can’t give you what you want, Max.”

“Why not?” Max whispered.

“Because of who I am.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Do you really want to know?”

“Yes, if it’ll help me make you understand that we’re better together, then yes, I want to know.”

Liz knew that once everything was out in the open, he would pity her. And that was the last thing she wanted. But maybe it would help, help him understand why they couldn’t be together.

“My parents left me with my grandmother when I was 6. They were drug addicts who killed themselves on an overdose. My schoolmates didn’t want to have anything to do with me when they found out. My boyfriend cheated on me with my best friend. And my grandmother got sick and died, leaving me all alone. You were the only one who approached me and befriended me ever since. You welcomed me in your life and shared your family with me. No one’s ever done that for me, Max. But you did.”

“I don’t underst—” Max began to speak but Liz cut him off.

“Don’t you see? You’re the only one I have left. You’re the only friend I have. You’re my only family. And if we try this and it works out, then that’s fine. But what if it doesn’t? I can’t lose you, Max. I don’t think I can survive another loss, especially not you.”

Max didn’t know what to say. And Liz took this opportunity to pull her hands away from him.

“I’m sorry for what happened. I didn’t mean to lead you on.” Liz said as she moved towards the door.

Max stood where he was, he didn’t move nor did he look her way as he heard the door open. All he could think about was how his heart was breaking into a million pieces.

But then Liz spoke again. “I do love you, Max, more than a friend should. But I’d rather be just a friend than risk loving you the way I want to and lose you in the end.”

A/N: Thank you. I see new names here. Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback.

dreamsatnight - Exactly. Sure you can be friends but it's not the same. I also understand your point about Max finding someone else. And yes, it will hurt especially since Liz admitted her feelings. As for Michael, he did make out with another woman.

Dziumka - Thanks for your words.

Carrie - Welcome back, lol. Wow, that was a um...a very enthusiastic feedback, hahaha. Oh, and did I mention I'm already at Chapter 15?

Michelle - And here I thought most of you will feel sad towards Liz's predicament, lol. Although I completely understand, have a gorgeous guy like that and pass up on him? I'd be banging her head on a wall if I was anywhere near her. I have more on Max but I don't want to write it here and spoil the chapter for you. So read on below after the part. And no, Michael wasn't lying. Maria isn't the kind of woman to just get heartbroken, cry and forgive the minute the guy says sorry. She's the "don't get mad, get even kind" so expect a lot more than a hurricane from her.

Cocogurl - Thank you. Yup, Max needs to do a lot to make Liz change her mind.

Emma - EEEEEEEEEEE!!!! I'm so happy for you. Love the name!
As for the fic, yeah, how do fight for someone when the person you're fighting against, is the same person you're fighting for. It's a losing battle, but maybe Max has something more in his sleeve.

Natalie36 - Of course, how can any woman not fall for Max? =) But yes, he has a tough task ahead of him if he wants her to see things his way.

yayaliens - Wow, you just read my mind way before this was posted. Thanks for the fb.

Kitten88 - I think this is the first time I've seen your name here. Thank you for taking the time to post. Unfortunately, I can't really fix this in the next part or the fic will be over. But don't you worry, all my stories have Dreamer insurance.

carolina_moon - Yeah, I guess you could say that it can't be just one person making the choice to do something. And I agree with you there, we'd probably even fight over Max is he was for the taking. Yeah, there will be more with Michael and Maria as this story progresses.

Nikki04 - Yup, Max has some work to do if he wants Liz.

pandas2001 - Liz has been traumatized that's why she`can't get over her fear.

Alien_Friend - Thank you for liking this. Max does have his work cut out for him if he wants to win Liz over.

Addicted2AmberEyes - Thank you. You completely understood what I was trying to say.

RoninBehr - LOL, ok, I'm back with an update.

roswell3053 - I'm baaack!

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Max was floored by her admission. ‘Liz loved him. She loved him the same way that he loved her.’

When he came to from the shock of hearing what he wanted to hear, Liz was gone. He raced after her, running out of the bedroom and out of the house, just in time to see her car speeding away.

Max tried to chase after her, running as fast as his legs would carry him but it was futile. He turned back and ran towards his own house. He went into the garage, got onto his red Ducati and gunned the engine.

The garage door opened and he zoomed out on the streets, chasing after Liz.

He got to the intersection but she was nowhere in sight. He first chose to take the route back to Elizabeth’s.

Max parked his bike and rushed into the restaurant for the second time that day. Some of the patrons were surprised to see him there, while others were used to seeing him pop in from time to time. However, his appearance confirmed what that show, where Liz was interviewed, said. Max was a regular at Miss Parker’s establishment.

He walked straight into Liz’s office and was taken aback that she was not there. He turned around and went to the kitchen. But again, Liz was nowhere to be found.

He went out to the dining area and looked for Sarah instead.

“Where’s Liz?” he asked Liz’s right hand man…or in this case, woman.

Sarah was confused: if anyone would know where Liz was, it would be Max, wouldn’t it?

“Why are you asking me? Don’t you know where she is?” Sarah asked back with a slight shake of her head.

Max was getting irritated. He rubbed a hand over his face and took a deep breath. “If I knew where she was, I wouldn’t be asking you.”

“Oh.” Sarah’s mouth twitched. “Sorry, Max but she hasn’t come by here all day. Actually she hasn’t come here for a few days now.”

“Damn it.” Max muttered. “Ok, thanks.” Then Max left the restaurant and hopped on his bike.

Max kept going though he had no clue where else to go to look for her. Michael wasn’t home yet so he couldn’t drop by his brother’s place. He didn’t know where Isabel was and he didn’t really want to talk to her about his love life. And the one person he could freely talk to is also the one he has to talk about. So, without any other clue on what to do, he changed direction and shifted gears to make his bike go faster.
***
Isabel wondered who could be ringing the doorbell at her apartment. She knew both her brothers were still supposedly in New York and none of her model friends called to say that they were dropping by. So the look on her face when she opened the door was one of complete surprise.

“Liz?” Isabel was concerned when she saw her brother’s best friend on her doorstep. Liz had never gone to her place without Max. And it didn’t seem like this was going to be a pleasant visit judging by the redness of the smaller woman’s eyes.

Liz sniffled, “I hope I’m not bothering you but is it ok if I stay here for a while?”

Isabel was baffled and the main thought running through her mind was, ‘is Liz crying?’

“Sure, of course. Come on in.”

Liz walked into Isabel’s flawless apartment. It was spotless and looked like it was a page out of an interior design magazine. With the striped red and white couch on one end of the room, a huge plasma TV at the other, a glass coffee table in the middle with a couple of photography magazines and a shallow dish with white jasmine scented candles on it. The room was painted an egg shell color and an open archway led into the dining room.

“Can I get you anything?” Isabel asked from behind Liz.

Liz shook her head in the negative. “No, I just needed some place to stay for a bit.”

Isabel motioned for Liz to sit on the couch and she sat down right beside her. “Is everything ok?”

Again, Liz shook her head no.

“Is this because of the interview?”

Liz quickly turned to look at Isabel. “You…you saw it?”

Isabel grimaced, “Yeah, I did. Don’t mind that guy, he was a complete jerk to you and I know Max will be pissed when he finds out. You did tell him, right?”

“No, we didn’t get to talk about it.”

“Why not?”

“I just didn’t want to bother him with it.”

“Well…if this isn’t about that, then what’s got you so sad?” Isabel inquired.

Liz was hesitant but she was at Isabel’s house after all. She knew Max wouldn’t go here to look for her so this was her safest location. But by coming here, she brought Isabel into the middle of the mess she was in with Max. Now she had no choice but to tell her best friend’s sister all about it.

So, Liz took a deep breath and said, “Max told me he loves me.”
***
“Max!” Philip rose from his chair when his office door opened and his second son walked in.

“Hey Dad, are you busy?” Max walked in to his father’s office and sat on one of the brown leather armchairs right in front of Philip’s dark mahogany desk.

Philip Evans has made a name for himself by being one of the best corporate lawyers in the state. And being one of the pioneers in the firm, it granted him a quick rise to the top. Now, he has his own team and only handles the big clients.

In all honesty, he and his children benefited from each other’s careers. Philip’s reputation grew as his children became more popular. And his children’s fame rose the more cases Philip won.

Now that the Evans siblings were celebrities; whenever one of the kids came by, work in the firm halted as eyes followed them all the way into their father’s office. And Max was a certain favorite with all the ladies.

“No not at all, son. Is something the matter?” Philip moved in front of the desk and sat on the other chair, moving it to face his child.

“I need to talk to you about something.” Max began.

“Is this a legal matter?” Philip was about to press the button on his intercom to get a paralegal into the office and take notes but Max stopped him.

“No, it’s not. It’s about Liz.”

Philip remained quiet and signaled for Max to continue. He had a feeling he knew what Max was about to say but he waited for it to come from him.

“I’m in love with her.” Max continued.

Philip looked like he was still waiting for something more.

“Aren’t you going to say anything?”

“Not yet. Max, that’s nothing new.”

“What do you mean that’s nothing new.”

“Son, I know each one of you. You may have moved out ten years ago, but I still know what goes on with all of you.”

Max’s eyebrows furrowed as he took that in. “You have someone spying on us?”

“No! Of course not, that’s ridiculous! But it’s obvious with the way you two were going. You’re so close to each other, one of you was bound to fall. I was just waiting who was going to break first.”

“Oh.” Max pouted. He had no idea that his dad thought that way when it came to him and Liz. It was understandable when it came from his mom. All mothers were like that after all. But coming from his dad, the man who stayed out of their affairs until needed… he shook his head a bit to clear his own thoughts. He had more to say.

“But the thing is, she said she loves me too but she’s too scared of things not working out and us not being friends anymore.”

“And I’m sure you’re not going to let that happen, right?”

“Absolutely. I mean, I won’t let that happen. I don’t want to lose her too.”

“Then you have to convince her of that.”

“If I can find her.”

“What do you mean if you can find her?”

“We weren’t done talking yet and she just rushed out of the house. I went to the restaurant but she wasn’t there and I don’t know where else she could’ve gone.”

“Ok…well what would you have done if she didn’t leave?”

“I would’ve convinced her that what she was thinking was completely wrong.” Max answered.

“How?” Philip pressed.

“What do you mean how?”

“How would you have convinced her?”

“By telling her that her fears were unfounded.”

“Fears?”

Max sighed and made her dad promise that whatever he tells him will stay in the office. Philip was not to tell anyone else about it.

Philip agreed and Max told him what Liz revealed about her life.

After that, Philip leaned back in his chair and exhaled loudly.

“So?” Max asked, leaning forward for some fatherly advice.

“I don’t know what to tell you, Max. You have your work cut out for you.”

“That’s it? That’s all you have to say?”

“Max, Liz obviously has some issues she has to deal with. And until she’s overcome those, that’s the only time she’ll let you in the way you want to. So you have to prove to her that you won’t leave her even though things don’t work out. And simply telling her won’t cut it.”

“But how can I convince her that she won’t lose me despite whatever happens between us when she herself wouldn’t even give us a try?”

“That’s what you’ll have to figure out.”

Max sighed and slumped back in his seat.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“He said what?”

Isabel’s eyes were about to bulge out of their sockets.

“Yeah.” Liz sighed.

“Oh my gosh.” Isabel put her palms on her cheeks, feeling herself getting flushed with excitement.

Liz only gave her a small smile.

And that didn’t escape Isabel’s notice. “What’s wrong?”

Liz bit her lip. “It’s not that I don’t love him too but—”

Liz stopped talking in the middle of her sentence when Isabel let out an ear-piercing shriek.

“OHMYGOD! You told him that? OH MY GOD!” Isabel was grinning from ear to ear. “You’re so perfect for each other.”

“Isabel.”

“Oh, sorry. Continue.”

“Ok, yeah I told him that but that’s not the point.”

“Well, he loves you, you love him, what else is there?”

Liz paused and remained silent.

“Liz?”

“I don’t want to lose him.” Liz blurted out.

“Huh? How will you lose Max if you both love each other?” Isabel was confused. Didn’t Liz know how much she meant to her brother?

“What if things don’t work out between us? What will happen then? There’s a possibility that we won’t be friends after.”

“Well, that’s a risk, sure. But what if it does work?”

Liz shook her head no. “It’s too big a risk. That’s something I can’t afford, Iz. He means too much to me.”

That’s when Isabel understood where Liz was coming from. She was right; there were couples that seemed like they were meant to be together forever, and you think that nothing could ever break them apart. But then something happens, and the once strong and steady relationship crumbles, and the couple is reduced to barely acquaintances.

That was what Liz was deathly afraid of. How do you continue being friends with an ex who supposedly knows every little thing about you, to whom you’ve bared your body and soul to?

“Hmmm, I get what you’re saying, Liz. But maybe it wouldn’t be so bad, you know? Wouldn’t you rather try and see than totally giving up before it’s even began? What was that saying, ‘it’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all’?”

“Ha, whoever said that; never lost anyone in their life.” Liz bitterly replied.
***
After talking to his father, Max went home…or rather, Liz’s home. He decided that since he had no clue to where she went, he would just wait for her at her house. She has to come home some time, right?

He made himself comfortable on the couch and switched the 32” flat-screen TV on in the living room. It was on the Food Network, Liz’s favorite channel, and he just left it on, watching but not really. Sure he was looking at the screen but his mind was so far from where he was at the moment.

He recalled what his father told him. He had a lot of work to do to convince Liz that they would be good together, that they will work out because they’re so close. The question is, how. How will he be able to convince her of such?
***

“Ok, so let’s say you don’t move to the next level, and remain friends, but what about Max? I know my brother, Liz, and he won’t just settle for being friends. If he says he WANTS to be with you, he’ll do everything he can to make that happen.” Isabel said.

Liz nodded, she knew Max was as stubborn as she was.

“And if he does agree to being just friends, how will you feel if he moves on?”

Liz felt a pang in her heart at that. But she thought that if Max finds someone deserving of his love, then she must really be special, and he’d be happy.

“Then I’ll wish him all the happiness he deserves.” Liz said sincerely.

“That’s easier said than done, Liz.”

Tears pooled in her eyes, “I know, but what do you want me to do, Isabel?”

Isabel pitied Liz. She knew that Max and Liz would be happy together and they could make a relationship work. But before that could happen, Liz had to face all her demons first.

“Talk to Max. Tell him that you want this but that you’re scared.”

“I already told him that.”

“And that if he’s willing, ask him to wait for you.”

“I can’t ask that of him.”

“Why not? If the situation was reversed, would you have waited for him?”

“Yes.” Liz answered in a heartbeat.

“Then why can’t he do the same for you?”

Liz blinked, not knowing the answer to that question. She shook her head slightly, “No, I can’t do this.”

She stood up and Isabel did too. “Thanks for letting me vent out but I better go.”

“Liz”

“Really, Isabel, thank you so much.” Liz began to head for the door.

Isabel was at a loss with what to do. “Uh, you’re welcome. But Liz—”

“I’ll talk to you later, bye.” And the door closed behind Liz.

“Bye.” Isabel said softly to herself. She plopped down back at the sofa and was overwhelmed by this new development between her brother and his best friend.
***
After Liz left Isabel’s place, she headed straight to Elizabeth’s. Her usual patrons greeted her as she walked in, and her staff welcomed her after not seeing her for a few days.

“Great to have you back, Liz.” Wayne greeted his boss.

“Great to be back.” Liz answered.

Sarah came in and was pleasantly surprised to see her. “Liz!”

“Hey Sarah, thanks for covering for me. How was the Sawyer gig?”

“It was good, nothing freaky happened.”

Liz was walking towards her office with Sarah following right behind her. She was informing Liz of the catering jobs that were called in during the days that she wasn’t at the restaurant.

“And Max came by twice today looking for you.”

Liz stopped, almost causing Sarah to bump right into her. She turned around to face Sarah and asked, “Twice?”

“Yeah, Megan said he stopped by this morning. Then he did again a few hours ago.” Sarah paused, wondering if she should meddle. “Are you guys ok?”

Liz gave her a small smile, “Yeah, we are. Thanks, Sarah.”

That was Sarah’s cue to leave. She gave one more glance at Liz before leaving the office.

Liz began to work, checking the past few days’ sales, the schedules of the catering jobs and the staff assignment. After a few hours she decided, she couldn’t escape Max anymore. She would have to go home where she knew he would be waiting.

“Sarah, I’m going but I posted the assignments on the board in the kitchen. Please inform the wait staff to look at their schedules before they leave in case they have a gig tomorrow.” Liz ordered.

“Sure.” Sarah nodded.

“I’m heading on home. I’ll see you all tomorrow.” Liz said, walking out of the establishment.

She inserted the key into her door and opened it. She entered the house and walked into the living room. However, Liz stopped short at what she saw.

Max was on her couch, sleeping, the TV left switched on.

Liz’s mouth drew into a thin line. Remembering what she and Isabel talked about, she knew that her and Max had to discuss things between them but she was hoping to postpone it until she knew what course of action to take.

She hoped that things were different, that it was as simple as her loving him, and him loving her. This wasn’t a fairytale where things worked out and they could have their happily ever after. It didn’t work that way in real life.

She got the quilt that was on the loveseat and unfolded it. She out the quilt over Max and tucked him in. Her face hovered above his and she watched him sleep for a few minutes.

As she straightened up to go to her room, Max’s hand shot out of the quilt and held on to her wrist.

“Where were you?” Max asked, her eyes locking on with hers.

“I was at Isabel’s.”

Max nodded, still not letting go of her.

“We need to talk about this.” He said.

“I know,” Liz nodded and sat down by his side.

Max sat up, allowing Liz to move further on the couch. Both were silent, both not knowing where to begin.

Then Max broke the silence, “I know this is awkward, but it’ll only continue to do so if we let it. It’s easy to just say we forget the whole thing, but I can’t. You know me, Liz. You know me better than anyone and this is something that I can’t just ignore.”

“What do you want, Max?” Liz asked, not looking at him.

Max took her chin with one hand and forced Liz to face him. “You know what I want.”

“And I can’t give that to you.”

“But you love me, Liz. You said it so yourself.”

“But we can’t be together.”

“Why not? Because you’re scared? Liz, don’t you think I was afraid too?”

Liz was surprised at that admission.

“For a couple of weeks now, I fought with either telling you or not. I was scared of what would happen if I tell you that I am madly in love with you and you reject me. How could I go back to being just friends when I feel this much for you? Can I just sit by and watch and act as if everything’s ok?”

“Then you understand how I feel.” Liz interrupted.

“Yes, I understand, but there’s a difference. You didn’t reject me. Instead, you love me back.” Max said passionately.

Liz was speechless.

Max stood up and headed for the door. “I know you need some time to think this through. But believe me, I know what I want and I’m not giving up without a fight. I’m going to prove to you that I’m in it for the long haul. So just know this...I'm coming for you, Liz.

- I'm with you on Liz taking a chance, but sometimes, it's not so easy.

Lena7 - Yup, Max is most definitely worth the risk.

yayaliens - Isabel actually feels caught in between on this one. She considers Liz a good friend but Max is also her brother. And yes, despite everything, Max and Liz have that good of a friendship that even if they have disagreement, they can look beyond that.

sarammlover - Yeah, unfortunately, Michael is a bad bad boy on this one.

carolina_moon - Yup, that's Max for you. He can do everything gross you can come up with and he's still the hottest guy ever.

Michelle - LOL, you made me laugh with that fb. I even showed it to Kylie. And she thought up of what would be in the note. "Dear Liz, I left. Max."

Allie Xie - Oh, the title is in reference to how much they care for each other. Thanks for leaving fb.

Hope you're all enjoying this new part.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Michael entered his house in a sour mood. All day yesterday he was trying to apologize to Maria and convince her that she wasn’t mistaken in saying yes to marrying him.

And in true Maria fashion, she dragged it out. She wanted Michael to learn his lesson and learn it hard. Now she has thrown the gauntlet and she was going to use it strategically to her advantage.

Michael knew he would have to crawl on his hands and knees over live coal before Maria ever truly forgives him. But at least he was able to hold off her returning the ring, though that didn’t mean that she was going back on hooking up with Billy Darden.

He needed to vent and he only knew one person he could call.
***
Liz woke up with bloodshot eyes. She spent the entire night crying in bed, feeling so torn over what to do. Yes, she loved Max; that was never the issue. It was her fear that was driving her insane.

She knew she was being unreasonable but she couldn’t help it. Losing Max would be the last straw on the camel’s back.

She recalled what happened back in high school. She had a boyfriend, Kyle was his name. They were close, she loved him and he loved her back.

Then a new girl came and she befriended her. They too became close and the three of them would often hang out together. She would spend as much time with Tess as she could, not wanting to make her feel left out especially since she was new. Kyle didn’t mind, he said he didn’t. But she didn’t see the stolen glances between her best friend and her boyfriend.

Before she knew what was going on, she caught them in bed together. Liz’s world fell apart then.

But Max was not Kyle. There was no way that he would betray her. But he also worked in an industry where beauty was a prerequisite. How could she compete against that?

Sure, Max wouldn’t cheat on her. However that didn’t mean he wouldn’t get tired of her. And he will, eventually he will and she’ll be left all alone once again.

Although, he did say that he was in it for the long haul. But what did that mean exactly? He couldn’t predict the future, no one can. So he can’t assure her that he would be there forever.

Then she remembered what Isabel told her. What if Max found someone else, could she try to be sincerely happy for him?

She’ll try but that didn’t mean that she can’t cry in the comfort of her own home, wishing that he was with her instead.

As Liz mulled all these over, she began to cry again. Her heart was beating wildly, willing her to be with Max but her brain and that irrational fear that has taken a hold of her kept on stopping her from following her heart.

Max entered the house, knowing that Liz was probably still in bed. And like his regular routine, he walked up the stairs. He slowly opened the door and was about to creep inside Liz’s room but he stopped when she turned.

“Liz?”

Liz quickly swiped at her eyes with the back of her hand. “Hey.”

“What’s wrong?”

“It’s nothing.”

“Liz.” Max deadpanned.

“It’s nothing, Max, honest.”

Max decided to let it go and just nodded. He sat down on the bed by her side and just looked at her. Despite her dismissing the issue, he knew exactly why she had tears in her eyes. She was having a dilemma; as much as her head was telling her not to give in, her heart was starting to overcome her fears. The fact that she was fretting over their potential relationship the entire night meant that she was wasn’t sure what to do. Her convictions were weakening. Max knew it wouldn’t happen overnight though so he had a plan to speed things along.

He knew just how to win her over. He knew everything about her as she was his best friend after all. And that was why he believed that they would be great together. They would have the kind of love that people envy, the kind that lasted forever.

He reached out his hand and wiped her tears away, but his palm stayed on her cheek.

“You shouldn’t be crying. You know it breaks my heart when you do.”

Liz only gave him a small smile. “What am I going to do with you, Max?”

Max just grinned and said, “Love me.”

Liz looked at him intently, and Max returned her gaze just as strongly. He leaned in closer until he could feel the breath from her lips. Liz stared on while Max’s eyelids drifted close, just barely an inch apart. She felt her heart flutter, anticipating the kiss. And when his lips grazed hers, his phone rang.

Liz pulled back and looked at him. But Max didn’t care. He pulled Liz to him and kissed her before she could protest. He let his phone continue ringing till the call carried on to his voicemail.

He loved kissing her, he already had a taste of her soft lips on his and he couldn’t get enough.

When Max felt Liz’s hands on his chest, he pulled away, fully aware that she was still struggling. He allowed her some reprieve and went to answer his mobile phone. He kept looking at her while he listened to his voicemail. He smiled when he heard Michael’s voice but his brother’s strained tone cause him to frown.

Liz sat up on the bed when she saw the look of concern on Max’s face. “What’s wrong? Who was it?”

“It was Mike. He’s back but he sounded strange.” Max responded after hanging up.

“Strange how?”

“I dunno but he wants me to come over.”

Liz nodded.

”I wanted to spend the day with you. I just got back yesterday and we didn’t exactly spend some time together.”

“Michael needs you.” Liz reminded him.

“So do you.”

Liz shook her head no, “I’m ok, Max.”

“What about what happened with that interview? You still haven’t said anything about it.”

“There’s nothing to say. It’s over.”

“No, it’s not.”

Liz got off the bed and went to her closet, choosing what to wear to work today.

“You can’t avoid talking to me about it, Liz.” Max pressed on.

Liz turned to face him, “There’s nothing you can do. It’s done.”

“Then tell me what happened.”

“It…” Liz began and then sighed before continuing. “It just opened some old wounds is all.”

Max was about to say something but Liz cut him off. “But it’s ok. I’ve dealt with it.”

He stood up, “Alright, if you don’t want to talk about it yet, I’ll wait until you’re ready. I’ll go see Michael and just call if you need me and I’ll come get you, ok?”

Liz could only nod, completely knowing that Max wouldn’t budge on the subject.

Max walked to her and kissed the top of her head. “I’ll see you later.” He said, walking out of her room and her house and heading over to his brother’s.
***
Max put down his helmet on the counter and called out for his brother.

“Michael!”

No answer.

Max walked all around the house searching for Michael but was unable to find him. He went around back where he started to hear a ball bouncing on the pavement.

“Hey” Max greeted his brother.

Michael just nodded and threw the ball at him which Max caught easily.

“C’mon, let’s play.” Michael said, clapping his hands once and held his arms out, waiting for Max to throw it back at him.

Max had a fuddled expression on his face. “Mike, you didn’t say anything about playing. I’m not dressed for that.” He motioned to his clothes. He was wearing a white tee, a pair of worn out jeans and his old black boots that had scuff marks at the toes.

Michael exhaled and walked over to Max, snatching the ball from him. He walked to the free throw line and made a shot. The ball sunk in but he didn’t bother to retrieve it.

Max waited, just looking on. Something was wrong and he had an idea what it could be but he didn’t want to assume. He would wait till Michael was ready to tell him.

After a few more minutes of silence, Michael finally spoke.

“Maria found a discarded bra in my hotel room in New York.”

“I knew it.” Max muttered.

“What did you say?”

“I said I knew it. Geez, Mike, what did you expect? Sooner or later, you were bound to get caught.”

“Wow, man, thank you. Thanks for that brotherly love you have for me.” The sarcasm was dripping from Michael’s tongue.

“Cut the drama, this isn’t about that. This is about you and your stupidity. You proposed to her and you couldn’t even be fucking faithful?! This isn’t a game, Mike. You can’t play with the woman that way.” Max was getting angrier by the minute.

“Hey, you’re supposed to be on my side, Maxwell.”

“No, I’m thinking about what’s right. I’m thinking about Maria, which is probably what you should have done in the first place!”

Michael was getting seriously pissed. “I don’t have to listen to you ragging on me.”

“Then what the fuck am I doing here?”

Michael shook his head in anger. “You know what, just leave.”

Max shook his head and was walking back to the house to retrieve his helmet. But before he got close to the back door, Michael had something more to say.

“I should’ve known I’d get this from you. You’re so fucking self righteous!”

“What?” Max turned back around and briskly walked back towards Michael.

“You heard me.”

Max got in Michael’s face and was clearly seething. “Say that to my face, you fucking coward.”

“Oh, oh, I’m the coward. I’m the coward? That’s rich. You can’t even tell Liz how you feel for her.”

“Newsflash, big bro, I already did. But unlike you, I am going to treat her with love and respect, which is more than what I can say for how you treat Maria. And you’re telling me that I should be on your side? You were wrong, Michael, so wrong. You don’t cheat on the woman you love. And as for that brotherly love you were talking about? I saw her early yesterday morning, and she was responsible for me being able to go home early. And not once did I tell on you, Michael. I should have but I thought, hey, I ain’t snitching on my brother. But after this shit you pulled, don’t call me the next time you decide to wreck the best thing you can ever have in your life. And I’m telling you, Michael, Maria was it.”

Max stormed away from him but spoke before he slammed the door, “Have a nice life, Mike. Let’s see you do it without Maria by your side.”

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Max stormed into Elizabeth’s, not caring that customers were once again staring at him as he strode into the restaurant with purpose. He didn’t care that some of them stopped, gaping with forks in their hand poised to put food in their open mouths. He didn’t care that some women, both young and old started ogling at him like he was the hottest thing to walk the planet Earth. Well, technically, he was, but that wasn’t the point.

The point was an angry Max was an even hotter one than the model that graced the runway or the print ads or the magazine spreads or the front covers.

The minute he walked into her office, Liz knew something was wrong. She was busy with work, facing her computer monitor, her back to the door. But the familiar clumping of his boots made Liz aware that Max was heading straight for her.

She was prepared for a battle of the wills this time. Earlier at her house, she couldn’t stop him from kissing her. And no, it wasn’t because she wanted to stop him. It was wrong, according to her head. But she was ready this time.

However, one look at her best friend and all that mental preparedness flew out the window.

“What’s wrong?”

Max kept quiet, plopping himself at one of the cushioned chairs in front of Liz’s mahogany desk. He was fuming, that much was clear. And Liz didn’t know what caused it.

She knew Max was still dealing with his anger. He didn’t want to speak lest he say anything he would regret later on. That was one of the lessons he learned after being thrust into the public eye. Though he knew he could say anything to her, this was his Liz after all, he was really just furious that he couldn’t utter a single word even if he wanted to.

Liz stood up from her desk and called one of her wait staff, asking for a glass of water for Max. The waiter quickly obliged his boss’ request and soon returned with a tall glass of water with a slice of lemon floating in it along with some ice cubes.

Liz took the glass and closed the door, locking it behind her. She put the glass on the desk and Max took it gratefully, letting the cold water cool him down.

After swallowing about half of it down, he exhaled slowly, letting his anger flow out of his system.

“You ok now?” Liz couldn’t help but ask.

“I’m better. Thanks.” Max answered with a slight nod.

“So what happened?” Liz moved to sit on the other chair facing her desk.

Max looked at Liz closely, worrying that if he told her about Michael’s indiscretion it might reinforce her fears about how even the strongest relationships fail. After all, Michael and Maria have been together for close to five years now. However, he knew that Liz wouldn’t hold that against him, even if his idiot of a brother were at fault. He and Michael were two different people.

After a couple minutes of getting nothing from Max, Liz stood. “It’s ok if you don’t want to talk about it. I told you before I won’t push you.”

But Max quickly took hold of her hand just as she was standing right next to his chair, stalling her from moving any farther. “Michael was fooling around with some bimbos in New York and Maria found out.”

“Oh no.” Liz’s big round eyes grew even wider.

“Yeah, he told me that Maria found a bra in his room.”

“The girl was still there?!” Liz was appalled at the audacity Michael presented. He was engaged for crying out loud!

“No, I don’t think so. He didn’t say that Maria caught him with someone, just the bra. But then again, I didn’t stay long to find out.”

“What happened?” Liz went to sit back down.

“Michael and I had a fight.”

“What?”

“Well the guy’s a jerk, Liz. How could he do that to Maria? He’s engaged for crying out loud!”

“That was exactly what I was thinking.” Liz commented.

“I know he’s my brother but he stupidly did something, knowing it was going to hurt someone else.” Max was getting furious once more. “How could he do that?”

Liz remained silent. The Evans siblings had a close bond. Although they never declared it openly, each one admired the others.

Max and Michael have a close relationship. And Max looked up to his brother even though he won’t admit it out loud. They each respected the other highly. But with what Michael has done, Liz knew that it was going to be a hard blow for Max.

“I don’t understand why Michael did that either but people sometimes do stupid things.” Liz said calmly.

But Max was angry and it was clear on his tone of voice exactly how he felt. “Even if it hurts other people, someone you supposedly want to spend the rest of your life with?” Max was shaking his head. He just didn’t think that his brother was that idiotic.

“Not everyone’s the same.”

“You know what, I don’t even want to talk about it anymore. The guy’s a screw-up.” Max huffed.

“Max, you can’t stay mad at him forever.”

Max turned his head to look at her and said menacingly, “Watch me.”

Liz was stunned. “Max, you can’t be serious. He’s your brother. I think you’re overreacting.”

“Me? I’m overreacting?” Max was close to yelling. “He may be my brother but he did something wrong and he hurt a friend of mine in the process. How would you react if you were in my shoes?”

Liz was speechless. She knew how she would react because she’s been in Maria’s shoes. But nevertheless, Michael was Max’s brother. And blood is always thicker than water…isn’t it?

Max noticed Liz’s silence and realized he had hit a nerve with what he just said. He now knew about Liz’s heartbreak way back when and obviously it still stung.

Max moved closer, pulling his chair right next to hers. His legs trapped hers in between his. He held her hands and stared into her eyes, brown meeting hazel.

“Liz, I’m sorry.”

Liz’s mouth twitched, gracing him with a small smile. “You don’t have to be sorry.”

“Why is this still bothering you?”

“You could tell me. What Michael did is affecting you immensely.” Liz bantered.

“That’s different.” Max answered.

“Is it?”

“Yes.”

“How?” Liz asked, one perfectly trimmed brow raised.

“Because he hurt someone he loves.”

“Oh. So what are you saying? That Kyle didn’t love me?”

Max just looked at her, “Maybe, maybe not, I don’t know. But he’s not the person in question here. It’s you. Why is this still affecting you so much that you don’t even want to give us a chance? I’m not him, Liz. I won’t ever be.”

Max took a deep breath; he knew that once he laid out what he wanted to ask; things will change. And it’s looking to be not to his liking.

“So I guess what I’m asking is, do you still love him?”

Liz blinked in surprise. Where did that come from?

“What? NO!”

Max was inwardly sighing in relief. “Then why?”

“Didn’t I already tell you? You mean too much to me.”

“Why are you thinking about the negative? As much as there’s a chance that things won’t work out, there’s an equal amount of chance that it will. You just have to take that leap and believe in me.” Max said passionately.

“I’m trying, I really am.” Liz said sadly.

Max nodded. “I’m not trying to push you to make a decision you’re not ready for. I just want you to see that I’m not like that, that I won’t hurt you.”

Just as Max seemed to move closer, there was a knock on the door. “Liz?”

Both Max and Liz moved back. Max pushed his chair a bit away from Liz to give her space to stand and walk to the door.

Liz opened her office door and saw Sarah at the doorway. “What is it?”

“Just wanted to know if you want me to handle the Garett catering gig.” Sarah replied.

“Uh, yeah, ok.” Liz nodded, “Sure.”

“Alright then. I’m off.”

“Ok. Let me know how things are when you get there.”

“Will do.” Sarah then left.

“So…seems like you have the rest of the day off.” Max commented right after Liz closed the door.

“Yeah.” Liz answered, looking at Max. She walked over to her desk and started clearing out the documents scattered on top. Then she raised her head to take a glance at him and ask, “What do you want to do today?”

Max was watching her scurry around the office, setting aside all the paperwork that could be done at a later time. “Hmm, I dunno. What do you have in mind?”

“I just want us to spend the day together. Is…is that ok?”

Max wore a smile that could have lit up the entire restaurant. “That’s more than ok, Liz.”

“Ok.” Liz nodded. “I’ll get the kitchen to get us some lunch then we’re out of here.”

Max was beside himself, showing off his pearly whites with a broad grin. “Perfect.”

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Liz left Max in her office to have some lunches made for the two of them.

While Liz was gone, Max started thinking about what to do with Michael. He knew his best friend was right and that he couldn’t stay angry with his brother forever. But damn if he wasn’t fuming at the moment. He wouldn’t be talking to him today, that’s for sure. Besides, he’s reserved this day for Liz. It was time they started hanging out again, and maybe just give another nudge towards the direction he wanted their relationship to head to.

He knew he was starting to break Liz’s walls. It wasn’t going to be easy but every tiny chip counts and one day, one chip might be the one to make the rest crumble.

But back to the question at hand, what to do about his moron of a brother?

Max didn’t have that much time to mull things over before Liz re-entered the office holding two plates.

“I hope sandwiches are okay? I’m a little under-staffed due to the catering job.”

Max stood up from his seat to take the plates off of Liz’s hands. The smell of a freshly grilled roast beef sandwich drifting up to his nose made him close his eyes to savor the delicious aroma. It was then he noted how hungry he was, realizing he hadn’t eaten anything at all.

He placed the dishes on the desk right after Liz cleared her office table. Then she went back out, telling him she was just getting their drinks and that she will return shortly.

Liz came back with two glasses, one filled with iced tea, the other filled with cherry Coke. She didn’t even have to ask what he wanted, she just knew, which gave Max more reason to believe that they were perfect for each other.

Once she was seated beside him, they dug into their food. No word was spoken as several bites were chewed. This came to Liz’s notice and she stopped to giggle.

“What?” Max asked with a mouthful though not even looking at her.

Liz on the other hand, had her eyes fixed on him. “That was funny.”

This time Max glanced back at her, “What was?”

“Us. Were we that hungry that we weren’t even talking?”

“Isn’t talking with your mouth full rude?” Max remarked with a smirk.

“Not that, jerk.” Liz hit him playfully though Max still had to relinquish his hold on the remaining half of his sandwich.

Max laughed and finally decided to put down his meal. He wiped his hands on the napkin Liz passed him. Then after taking a gulp of his drink, wiped his mouth as well.

“Well, I know I haven’t eaten a bite since yesterday so—”

“What? Why haven’t you eaten anything?” Liz’s concern for him was so tangible; Max could wrap it around himself like a blanket.

“Have you?” Max replied.

Liz then looked like she had just been admonished. He was right, as always. Was it just yesterday that her world tilted on its axis? So many things have happened she couldn’t believe that not even a week has passed.

“Guilty.” Liz admitted.

“So, where will we go today?” Max asked as he resumed his lunch. He took a big bite and chewed as he looked at Liz.

When Liz glanced at him to respond at that moment, she felt her heartstrings being tugged. Max was immaculately beautiful and she once again wondered why he chose to spend time with her day in and day out. Could he really be in love with her like he said he was?

“Liz”

“Huh?” Liz had to shake her head literally to clear her mind from where her thoughts had drifted.

“Where were you?”

“Oh…uh, just thinking of what to do today.”

“Ok.” Max shrugged and returned to his food and the rest of their lunch was spent in silence.

Soon after leaving the restaurant, Max rode his bike and Liz drove her car back to her place. Not uttering a word as Max placed himself on the sofa to wait, Liz changed into a pair of dark jeans, Chucks, and a red tank top. She was quickly tying her hair up into a low ponytail when she returned into the living room.

Max was already holding her helmet that he took out of her coat closet. It was a gift he bought for Liz when she told him she was afraid of getting on “that damn deadly contraption he calls his baby”, a.k.a. his motorcycle. She rattled off how dangerous it was especially when they weave through the other cars on the highway, and how just one nick could throw him completely off balance, send him sprawling on the asphalt, injuring his source of income and might even get hit by a car while sliding down the road. Needless to say, he was laughing the entire time causing Liz to scowl at him for finding her list of possible scenarios amusing; and here she was fearing for his life.

So to get her over her fear, he got her a helmet. The first time he brought it to her house she looked at it like it was the weirdest thing to ever be invented.

“What?” Max looked at the helmet he was handing to her then back at her.

“What’s that?”

Max glanced at the helmet once more before answering. “What does it look like?”

“It looks like a helmet.”

“Maybe that’s because it is.” he smirked.

“Why are you giving it to me?”

“Because you’ll need it.”

“For what?” Liz was scowling by this time.

“Can you just stop with questions and take it. My arm is tiring out.”

Liz reluctantly took it with both hands but was still looking at it oddly. It was shiny and red, her favorite color, and obviously brand new.

“Put it on.”

“What?” Liz’s focus quickly flew back at his face to look for any signs of humor.

“Put it on.” Max demanded.

“Why?”

“We’re going for a ride.” he said quickly then ran back out to her driveway, knowing she would follow.

“Wait, what?” Liz ran after him and stopped short when she saw his parked bike in front of her house. She began to vehemently shake her head. “No. No Max, I am not getting on that damn thing.” her eyes trained solely on the black Ducati.

Max walked back to her, took the helmet out of her hands and put it on her head while she was still in a slight state of shock. “Yes you are, now come on.” He tugged on her hand, pulling her towards the motorcycle.

Then just as they got close, she wrenched her hand out of his grasp. “No, I’m not riding that thing!”

“I know you’re scared but you’ve got me with you.”

“Oh yeah, sure. Then there’ll be two bodies they’ll be scraping off the street. ”

Max rolled his eyes, “You’re being overdramatic.”

“No I’m not. It’s dangerous.”

“I’ve ridden her about a thousand times. As long as you’re being responsible and not acting like some lunatic riding recklessly on the road, then there’s nothing to worry about.”

“Yeah, you. I know YOU can be responsible, but what about the other drivers? It’s not your driving I’m worried about, Max, it’s theirs, and the dire consequences it can bring.”

“I know how to do defensive driving as well so nothing to fret about.” Max replied as he started pushing her towards the bike once more.

“But—”

“It’s dangerous, you told me.” Before Liz could react anymore, she was on the bike and so was Max, putting on his helmet.

He looked back at her and grinned, his happiness clearly showing. It wasn’t a grin that he gave the photographers nor the grin people see on the magazines. It was a smile he reserved for people close to him, like his family, and her.

“Hold on tight.” Max said as he revved the engine.

“Max” Liz called out to him fearfully as she wrapped her arms around his waist.

“Here we go!”

The only thing Max heard for the first ten minutes of that ride was Liz’s shrill screaming in his ears.

Looking back on that day now, he once again wondered if that was how Liz sounded in bed.

“Why are you staring at me like that?” Liz asked with one hand reaching for the helmet that Max still had his grip on.

“Huh?” He had to shake his head literally to steer him away from where his thoughts had started dragging his body to.

“You were staring. Is there something on my face?”

“Uh, no.” He then smiled, “Your face is fine, beautiful in fact.”

Liz blushed a bit at that compliment before rolling her eyes and turning her back to him. With her helmet in hand, she put it on and went outside to where Max’s bike was parked.

After they both got situated on the motorcycle, Liz leaned close to Max’s back to ask. “Where are we heading?”

Max had to suppress a groan. The white shirt he was wearing wasn’t of thick material, and neither was Liz’s tank. He could definitely feel her body’s warmth permeating through his back.

Max swallowed thickly, “Uh, wanna go down to the beach?”

Liz had to pause. The beach was their place of solace. It was where all the serious conversations were held. And sometimes, it was just somewhere to go to when they wanted to think. She knew why they were going there today. Max wanted to talk. She could only fight him so much. She didn’t know how much more her resolve would hold out.

Without waiting for her reply, Max started the engine and they were off.
***
After parking his bike by a café on the street across the beach, they got some smoothies then went down to the shore to walk.

Unfortunately, there were some paparazzi taking their pictures without their knowledge.

“So what really happened at that interview?” Max started cautiously.

Liz looked at him and knew that he wasn’t going to stop till he heard the entire story. She sighed, “He asked a lot of questions about my past. Though it was more like he already knew and was just reminding me of what happened.”

Max took her hand in his as they walked side by side on the sand, sensing that squishy, crunchy feeling beneath the soles of their shoes.

Click, click, click…

Liz inhaled deeply, smelling the salt sea air. For this moment, she allowed herself to just revel in being held by Max.

Max tugged her closer to his side and wrapped an arm around her shoulders as they continued their stroll.

Click, click, click…

“I know I have abandonment issues, Max. And I thought I had overcome them.” Liz chuckled, “I guess I was mistaken.”

Max contemplated what she was telling him though not responding to her statement. He wasn’t an idiot; he knew what she was saying. But as stubborn as she was, so was he.

“You just have to work harder at getting past them, that’s all.” Max said.

“I wish it was that easy.”

“It will be. Just take it a day at a time.”

They stopped where they were and Liz looked at him with a smirk. “This wouldn’t have anything to do with us, does it?”

“Well initially no. But now that you mentioned it, of course it does.” Max didn’t deny it.

Liz had to laugh at his fighting spirit.

Click, click, click…

“What?” Max asked, grinning.

“You’re not gonna give up, are you?”

Max stared at her intensely. “On you, never.

Clasping her hand in his, they walked some more, each occupied with their own thoughts. Max, on how to help Liz get past her issues; and Liz, savoring the time she had with her best friend.

“And once again, despite their constant denials, it’s quite obvious with these recent photos that Max Evans and li’l Miss Parker are definitely an item.”

CHAPTER NINETEEN
Isabel walked into her parents’ home for their usual weekend luncheon and was surprised to see that Michael and Max were already there. She was always the first to arrive only to be stunned that today, she was the last.

But as soon as she got over that little hiccup in their routine, she then noticed that they were without their significant others.

At that Isabel had to smile. Knowing what she knew from Liz, she now had an opportunity to grill her brother about his best friend. But then again, she knew he wouldn’t be happy with the news she brought.

Looking at him once more, she saw that Max was already sporting a scowl, a sure sign that he was in a bad mood. Maybe she should delay what she had to show him.

“Uh, hi everyone. I’m not late, am I?” Isabel spoke as she entered the dining room. She then went to kiss her mom and dad.

“Oh not at all, dear. Your brothers were just early, for once.” Diane replied, throwing a glance at both Max and Michael’s directions.

Isabel took her seat at the dining table across Max and asked nonchalantly, “Where’s Liz?”

“She had work today.” Max answered evenly.

She nodded then nudged Michael who was seated beside her. “What about you, where’s Maria?”

Max made some kind of choking sound that caused everyone to turn to him.

“Are you ok, Max?” Diane said in concern.

“Oh yeah, Mom. Totally fine.” He answered his mother but his gaze was locked on Michael.

“What’s going on, boys?” Philip interjected. He wasn’t one to talk as much as his wife and daughter did but he was quite observant.

When Michael came in, he detected the somber mood of his firstborn. Then Max arrived and that sad disposition quickly turned into a defensive stance.

And then there was Max’s look of surprise upon seeing his brother before it was replaced by a frown.

Both Max and Michael swiftly turned their heads towards their father. They knew they were caught but they didn’t want to discuss the situation with their mother present.

“It’s nothing.” Michael replied, his head bowed, his eyes staring at his plate.

“Yeah Dad, it’s nothing.” Max said passively.

It was at that point that Isabel noted that there was something going on between her elder siblings and she was clueless about it. So did Diane.

Philip stood up and motioned for the two other men at the table to follow him in his study, leaving Diane and Isabel to wonder what that was all about.

Once inside his office, Philip locked the door and faced his two grown sons. “Ok you two, there’s obviously a rift between you and I do not want you to sit down at the table with your mother until you resolve it.”

“Fine, then I’ll just leave.” Michael said but before he was even able to take a step forward, Philip cut him off.

“You will do no such thing!” Philip said in a stern tone. “You’re already here, Michael. Either you fix this now or you go tell her what the fuck is going on with you.”

Both Max and Michael were shocked at their father cursing.

“What? You’ve never heard me swear before? We’ll you’re both grown up now and I suggest you start acting like it instead of giving me this juvenile behavior, Michael.”

Max snickered, to which Philip glared at.

“The same goes for you too.”

“He started it.” Max replied, astonished.

“What?” Michael turned to glower at his brother.

“Do you want me to do the honors?” Max countered.

Philip looked from one son to the other, waiting for an explanation to this argument. It has been a long time since he had to lock himself and his boys in his office to resolve a fight.

“Well?”, their dad prodded.

Just as Max was about to speak, Michael beat him to the punch.
***
After seeing her father and two brothers march into the study, Isabel was quick to stand as well. But before she could step away from her chair, her mother’s voice rang.

“And where do you think you’re going?” Diane asked, gazing at her daughter from her seat at the table.

“Don’t you want to know what’s going on?” Isabel was getting antsy.

“I’ll know when your dad tells me.”

“Well, I know you won’t tell me, Dad won’t either. And it’ll be a time when pigs fly before Max or Michael even grazes the topic.”

“That’s because it’s none of your business.” Diane took a sip from her wineglass.

“But Mom!”

“No buts. Isabel Evans, you sit back down because if you go anywhere near your father’s office, you will march right in there to join your brothers.” Diane warned.

As much as Isabel wanted to know what was going on, she didn’t want to know of it firsthand. Being sent to her dad’s office meant getting a scolding when they were kids. And even though she and her siblings now had their own houses, she knew her parents wouldn’t hesitate to discipline them if need be.

Slowly, she sunk back down in her chair with a pout. Besides, she knew Max would spill the beans to Liz. And with her brother’s best friend confiding in her, maybe she could squeeze the information out of her.
***
“I was fooling around in New York and Maria came and saw something.” Michael muttered.

“She caught you cheating on her?” Philip was aghast.

Michael avoided his dad’s reproving gape.

“Michael, how stupid can you be? Your mother and I didn’t raise you to be an idiot. You’re engaged for God’s sake! You asked her for her hand in marriage, not the other way around. You, not her. If you weren’t ready to settle down, why did you even propose in the first place?” Philip lectured.

“Because I love her.” Michael answered easily.

“You love her.” Philip said deadpan. “You love her and yet you were playing around with someone else. Marriage is not a game, Michael. You don’t do that to someone you love.”

“That’s exactly what I said.” Max interjected. However, both Philip and Michael gave him a look indicating that he should keep his mouth shut. He responded by raising his open palms towards them in a silent surrender. He would gladly stay quiet as long as he wasn’t the one being chided like a little boy.

Returning to his eldest, Philip had to ask. “What exactly did Maria see? And please tell me that the woman wasn’t there. I’ve known Maria long enough and I don’t think the chaos that would have ensued would’ve been a pretty sight.”

“A bra.”

Philip’s eyes grew wide and didn’t know what else to say. So instead, he smacked his son at the back of his head.

“Ow!” Michael rubbed his head from where his father’s hand connected.

“I give up.” Philip said, shaking his head as he walked to his chair to sit down. “You two are the ones to carry on the Evans name but it looks like I should be banking on Isabel with that one.”

“What?” Max and Michael exclaimed.

“What do you mean what?” Philip stared at them. “You don’t know how to win the girl of your dreams.” He said pointing to Max. “And you already did but you just fucked it all to hell”, he directed at Michael.

Both boys were once again surprised to hear their father swear. They have heard him curse on occasion especially when a case wasn’t heading in the direction or pace that he wanted. But never did he direct the crude expletives towards his children.

“Oh for Pete’s sake! Yes, I can say those words too, get over it.” Philip then sighed, “What am I going to do with the two of you?”

Max and Michael just stood in front of their father’s old mahogany desk that had the cherry finish, making their dad look regal whenever he sat behind it, not to mention quite intimidating. Being asked to go in the study brought them back to their childhood years when they knew that they were about to get grounded but not before having to withstand a stern scolding.

“So what has this got to do with your fight?” Philip asked, finally getting to the main reason why they were holding up Diane’s family lunch.

“We said some things to each other that wasn’t exactly nice.” Max mumbled.

“Let me guess, you didn’t like what he did and you got angry because he hurt someone.” Philip addressed Max.

Max nodded.

“And you thought he didn’t have the right to get angry because he’s supposed to be on your side even though you know very well that what you did was wrong.”

Michael nodded.

Philip just shook his head, “I guess no matter how old you get, some things just never change.” Then he got down to business, “Alright. Max, you should have supported your brother—”

“What? He’s a prick! I am not going to condone what he did to Maria. He may be my brother but he was stupid and he began spouting some self-righteous crap about me because I didn’t agree with what he did!” Max pointed at his brother, his anger boiling to the surface. He was fuming. He was the one being told that he was wrong for NOT siding with Michael who was cheating on his fiancée?!

He then returned to face his father. “And you’re telling me that I’m wrong for not being on his side?! Wow, Dad, that’s really reassuring. At least now I know what values you uphold.”

Despite hearing Max’s heated speech, Philip remained stoical, a trait Michael inherited. “Are you finished? Because I wasn’t.”

Max stayed silent, looking at his father irately with his arms folded over his chest.

Philip knew Max was mad at him but he didn’t mind. He was sure Max’s anger would dissipate after hearing everything he had to say.

Michael only looked on, wondering why Max was seething. He had seen Max furious before but nothing like this.

“As I was saying, you should have supported him, but not in the way you think. Your brother is obviously not using his head so you should have advised him.” Philip told Max. “I wasn’t saying you should condone what he did.”

“Yeah, like he listened when we were at that club.” Max said.

“Well you know how pigheaded he can be.”

“Hey!” Michael yelled.

“You are, Michael.” Philip said, turning to his other son. “And now, you’re not only pigheaded but you’re a moron as well. Why were fooling around? Did you think it was harmless as long as you weren’t going to get caught? It’s going to catch up with you sooner or later. But more importantly, it makes me wonder if you’re ready for marriage.”

Michael had no response to that.

“I think you need to figure out if you really want Maria by your side for the rest of your life.” Philip said. “Do you?”

“Yes.” Michael answered.

“So what are you going to do about this mess you created?” Philip inquired.

Michael had to shrug. “I don’t know.”

Philip had to grin. He always took pleasure in coming up with creative punishments for his kids. “I do.”

“You do?”

“Uh huh. Since you both ruined your mother’s lunch, you two will help each other win the object of their affection.”

“What?!” Michael looked at Max.

“No way!” Max was fervidly shaking his head.

“Yes way, Max. And if I hear that you didn’t do what I said, you’re going to wish you did.” Philip reprimanded.

Max rolled his eyes and exhaled, “Fine. So how exactly are we supposed to help each other?”

“That, my boy, is completely up to you.” Philip smiled, showing off his pearly whites.

And with that, Philip stood up and walked out of his office, leaving his two grown sons to follow him back to the dining room.
